IT and business leaders face big gap in understanding of data priorities
Siarhei - stock.adobe.comNewsIT and business leaders face big gap in understanding of data prioritiesThere appears to be a gap between what business leaders want to do with artificial intelligence and the IT capabilities of their organisationByCliff Saran,Managing EditorPublished: 22 Nov 2024 10:33 Over three-quarters (77%) of business leaders claim it is easy to use the data they need for their jobs, yet IT people struggle with data management, research has found. The Morning Consult survey of 4,000 business leaders and tech practitioners for Capital One found that 70% of IT staff report spending up to four hours a day fixing data issues, conducting quality checks or correcting errors.According to Capital One, these ongoing struggles not only slow down workflows, but also point to deeper issues with data management and governance to ensure high-quality data. The survey reported that although data culture is a top indicator of artificial intelligence (AI ) success among those polled, only 35% of respondents said they have a strong data culture, citing inconsistent support and education. In fact, over a fifth said their organisation lacks a strong data culture or there is inconsistent leadership support, talent development and education around data. The majority (87%) of business leaders who participated in the survey believe their organisation has a sufficiently modern data ecosystem to build and deploy AI. The fact that only 13% of the technical people polled were confident they could fix data issues in less than an hour shows a disconnect between business goals and the technical implementation challenges that must be overcome to meet these objectives.Companies are looking to deploy advanced artificial intelligence such as multi-modal AI, which requires the ability to process unstructured data in various formats and on a massive scale. However, according to Capital One, the contrast between perceived ease and the time spent resolving data problems highlights how many organisations overlook the result of poor data management in an increasingly complex environment. The survey also revealed inconsistency in how business leaders rank data security. While 76% ranked data security as their top concern in AI initiatives, followed by data quality (73%) and data management (65%), over half (53%) said their organisation prioritises data management to mitigate risk. In fact, 38% admit data management is given only moderate importance. Efforts to address security risks vary, with 58% of business leaders using data encryption, but only 20% using tokenisation. When asked about their organisation's progress with cloud integration, 41% of leaders and 33% of practitioners with advanced implementations said they are scaling automation technology across the enterprise. However, in those organisations at an early stage of implementation, 15% of leaders and 18% of practitioners are running pilots in some parts of the business.Cloud integration is considered an important step in improving the data management required for AI. Terren Peterson, vice-president of engineering at Capital One, said: Doing AI and ML [machine learning] is hard enough on its own.Organisations need to start with a good foundation of data, he said, and to achieve this, they should aim to build a data platform based on standardised data using a single data pipeline.According to Peterson, those organisations that have fully embraced cloud technologies are in a better place in terms of the data management required to support AI, compared with those that rely on on-premise IT infrastructure. Cloud-native organisations are just two or three clicks away from building their data platform, he added.Read more about data managementHow to manage proprietary enterprise data in AI deployments: Explore strategies for managing sensitive data in enterprise AI deployments, from establishing clear data governance to securing tools and building a responsible AI culture. Why Salesforce needs a data management platform: There are reports that Salesforce is looking to acquire Informatica, but such a move needs to fit with its AI and GenAI strategy. In The Current Issue:Interview: Rahul Todkar, head of data and AI, TripadvisorGartner Symposium: Why the chance of digital success is randomDownload Current IssueNTT R&D Forum 2024: New horizons for photonics-based chips, clouds & qubits CW Developer NetworkDiversity in tech: To work for all, AI needs input from all Computer Weekly Editors BlogView All Blogs

Driving innovation in emerging tech through international collaboration
The UK, with the third largest tech sector in the world, is well-positioned to successfully partner with leading and emerging digital economies. But innovation does not exist within the constraints of country borders. In fact, international partnerships and collaboration are key to making sure that technology works for people, economies, societies, and the planet.Recent years have seen the UK government sign a number of innovative bilateral initiatives including Fintech Bridges, Space Bridges, and Digital Economy Agreements. While many of these have been successful, it is critical the new government continues to work with partners around the world to best position the UK tech sector for international success. One of the most promising initiatives in fostering international collaboration has been the establishment of Fintech Bridges, as exemplified by the UK-Australia Fintech Bridge. These arrangements serve as international regulatory sandboxes that allow companies to test innovative products and services in a controlled environment while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.By doing so, they help companies - especially those that are inherently innovative and operate in difficult regulatory environments - scale into new markets more effectively. The new government has a unique opportunity to drive innovation through international partnerships Daniel Clarke, TechUKThe UK-Australia Fintech Bridge has demonstrated the potential of such partnerships. Under this agreement, regulatory authorities from both countries collaborate to support fintech startups, allowing them to operate in each other's markets through regulatory sandboxes. The success of this initiative, which has seen over 42 UK fintech companies expand into Australia, shows that to support innovative, high-growth sectors, you need innovative trade policies. To build on this success, TechUK has called on the new UK government to establish additional Tech Bridges which include regulator-to-regulator dialogue - with other key markets, across more technology sub-sectors.These partnerships would support the international expansion of some of the UKs most innovative tech companies and help diminish the technical trade barriers which so often arise from varying regulations. In an increasingly digital world, the UK must also focus on negotiating Digital Economy Agreements (DEAs) with priority markets. The UK-Singapore DEA, for instance, has been a model for how such agreements can facilitate innovation. DEAs are adaptable to new technologies and provide mechanisms for regular stakeholder input, ensuring that the trading relationship remains modern and responsive to technological advancements. The next UK government should build on this model by negotiating additional DEAs with key markets. These agreements would not only support the digital economy but also provide a framework for cooperation on emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, cyber security, blockchain and much more. The US-EU Trade and Technology Council, despite yielding few concrete results, has been a critical forum for discussing transatlantic cooperation on issues such as export controls, foreign direct investment screening, and technology standards. These are issues that are inherently global and ever-changing and thus require a consistent, ongoing dialogue. The UK should seek to learn the lessons from the US-EU Trade and Technology Council and explore options for dialogues with key partners. Moreover, where bilateral science and technology partnerships already exist such as the newly signed UK-India Technology and Security Initiative, the UK should prioritise operationalising them in consultation with industry stakeholders. For example, the UKs bilateral tech forums with Japan and India offer significant opportunities for closer cooperation on emerging technologies. By strengthening these partnerships alongside industry support, the UK can remain at the forefront of critical conversations on technology and trade. The new government has a unique opportunity to drive innovation through international partnerships by building on successful initiatives like Tech Bridges, prioritising digital economy agreements, and enhancing dialogue with core partners. These efforts will not only support the growth of high-tech sectors but also ensure that the UK remains a leader in global dialogues around technology and regulation.Daniel Clarke is policy manager for international policy and trade at TechUK. Read more about UK tech policyHow standards and assurance are making responsible AI achievable - Everyone would agree that taking an ethically principled approach to using AI is essential - but in practice, delivering governance and assurance mechanisms around implementing AI responsibly is what really matters.Driving the development of transformative technologies through digital skills - The lack of digital skills training for employees is holding back organisations from achieving the business potential of key technologies such as AI, data analytics and cyber security. What needs to be done? From pixels to planets - the UK gaming and space sectors show how to lead on future technologies - The UK has a track record of innovation and achievement in gaming and space technologies - what can the rest of the tech sector learn from these success stories? Why the government should still bet on DSITs five key technologies - When the Conservative government launched the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, it identified five key technologies for UK investment. The new Labour government must continue this plan.TechUK calls for government support to help UK datacentre market reach growth potential - UK tech trade body TechUK claims the UKs datacentre sector could become one of the countrys fastest-growing sectors with more government support.

The Oura Ring 3 just dropped to its lowest price ever for Black Friday
Nina Raemont/ZDNETWhat's the deal?Ahead of Black Friday, the Heritage andHorizon Oura Ring is on sale on Amazon and on Oura's website for a limited time. The discount varies by ring finish and size, ranging from $50 to $200. It is a notably rare discount on a product that doesn't go on sale often. The deal comes after Oura launched its fourth-generation smart ring, the Oura Ring 4.ZDNET's key takeawaysThe Oura Ring is the most competitive smart ring on the market, starting at $249 (on sale) with a $6-per-month subscription.A phenomenal app experience, great health data visualization, sleep-tracking capabilities, and cross-platform integrations make this smart ring the one to beat. The monthly subscription is a grievance among wearers, and the battery life tends to wither over time.If you've heard of smart rings, chances are you've heard the words "Oura Ring" tossed around. It is, after all, the biggest player in the smart ring space and a near blueprint for today's rivals, whether that's the Samsung Galaxy Ring or the Ultrahuman Ring Air.The market for smart rings has ballooned ever since Oura debuted its first ring in 2015. There are many more options now, catering to various demographics like women, fitness junkies, and Android users. Also:Oura Ring 3 vs Oura Ring 4: I've tested both and this is the model you should buyWith all these hot, new choices, is the $300 Oura Ring (plus the $6 per month subscription) still worth it? I've tested the smart ring against its competitors for several months, and the answer is a resounding yes. The Oura Ring is still the smart ring most people should buy for its competitive and regularly improving features, app user experience, pristine sleep tracking data, and industry-leading integrations. Here's everything else you should know.A smart ring is only as good as its accompanying app. Unlike a smartwatch with a glowing screen you can toggle and view information on, a smart ring's usability relies on its app and only its app.The Oura Ring app is the best in the business, with the most well-rounded user experience out of every smart ring app I've tried. The app loads quickly 95% of the time and syncs your data from the ring in seconds. Taking your workout heart rate or recording a workout also doesn't take too long.Oura measures four core areas of wellness, as categorized by the tabs in the app: sleep, activity, resilience, and readiness. It's easy to see the underlying data that makes your scores what they are by tapping into each tab.Go into the sleep tab, and you'll see all the data contributors, like efficiency, time in bed, resting heart rate during sleep, latency, and the time you spent in each sleep stage. You can click on any of these data points to see a historical view of, say, your latency or average heart rate. This extensive level of data capture and illustration, including how every essential data point is easy to access and view from a daily or monthly glance, is my favorite part of Oura. Also: Oura Ring Gen 3 Horizon: Enhanced features, no more flat spotThis brings me to a nerdy but essential reason why I love Oura: it's great with health data visualization, which is vital for smart rings. The Oura Ring takes your sleep or activity data, stores it in an easy-to-find place, and provides you with useful recommendations for going about your day.Even though all those numbers are there in the app for you to learn more about, you don't need to interpret any of them to apply the data and tips to your lifestyle. Most data is paired with a short and sweet summary to help you easily digest the numbers. Screenshot/edit by Nina Raemont/ZDNETTake the Resilience tab, for example. You could check out the ebbs and flows of your resilience by keeping an eye on which quadrant of the resilience map you fall into every day. Or you could scroll down a smidge and read Oura's resilience insight, which offers up an accessible summary plus a recommendation or two on rest and activity. Nina Raemont/ZDNETSleep tracking is another Oura Ring selling point. Given the wearable's discreet form factor, you can go to bed every night with it around your finger and barely notice it (unlike a clunkier Apple Watch, which, from experience, is a pain to sleep with). Plus, the four to five days of battery life you get out of the Oura Ring means it will usually monitor your sleep for a few nights before you recharge. There are several helpful features that distinguish Oura from its competitors. What really sold me on it was how it helped me recover from an illness a few months ago. Before I got sick, I didn't take the ring's recommendations to heart. Right as I found myself getting ill, however, Oura notified me that my sleep, readiness, and body temperature data were all at alarming levels. As I spent a few days in bed with headaches, congestion, and a fever, I found Oura's data aligned with how I was feeling. The day I had a fever, the app noted my abnormal body temperature. I didn't have the energy to go to a doctor or consult a professional, but the app made recommendations that helped me recover or, at the very least, document my progress to recovery. For example, the app suggested I take it easy and concentrate on recovery when my body temperature rose. I turned off rest mode a few days later, but Oura continued to remind me to ease into activity and not push myself to support my recovery. Nina Raemont/ZDNETOura also stands out with its software longevity and feature relevance. In the past few months, Oura has debuted features forheart health, menstrual and menopausal tracking, and even a body clock graph. The ring also integrates with popular services likeStrava, Natural Cycles, and Apple and Android health apps. Given its long history in the space, Oura has far more integrations than its competitors. That said, there are some caveats with the Oura Ring. The first and most infamous one is the $6 monthly subscription fee to access the extensive data tracking in the app. We're seeing more subscription-free smart rings, like the Ultrahuman and Samsung, that entice users with one-time payments. Also: Study: Oura surpasses Apple Watch and Fitbit in sleep tracking accuracyOura claims the monthly subscription fee helps the company continue to upgrade and release new features regularly. While it's true that the smart ring company churns out new features like no other, it's a more challenging message to sell to consumers who could opt for a one-time purchase of the $400 Galaxy Ring and have all their health data openly accessible.Another issue I encountered while testing the ring is the chunkiness of the band. Compared to the Galaxy Ring, which has a thinner, inverted band that rarely scratches, the Oura Ring band juts out and is girthy around my finger, making it more prone to wear and tear.ZDNET's buying adviceStill, the Oura Ring is the best smart ring you can buy right now. It isn't without its flaws, but the sheer health data collection and visualization you have access to, its abundance of helpful features for anyone no matter their gender, age, or health status, and the user experience of the app and the smart ring itself make for a compelling wearable, even amid the bustling competition.By regularly wearing the Oura Ring, I learned more about my health. I learned that eating or drinking too late makes it harder for my heart rate to drop during sleep, that regularly exercising during the beginning of my menstrual cycle sets my energy levels up for success for the rest of the month, and that sleep is essential to my quality of life.I can't say as much about my Apple Watch, the Evie Ring, the Samsung Galaxy Ring, or the Ultrahuman Ring Air. If technology is supposed to improve our lives and help us better understand ourselves through data we could never collect on our own, the Oura Ring is one revolutionary wellness wearable.Oura Ring specsMaterialTitaniumWeight4 to 6 grams, depending on size and finishSizing6 to 13Sensors3-axis accelerometer, heart rate monitor, relative Sp02 sensor, ECG sensor, EDA sensorDurabilityWater-resistant up to 100 meters (more than 328 ft)PricingStarts at $299, plus $6 per month subscriptionPackage includesCharger and USB-C cableFeatured reviews When will this deal expire?Deals are subject to sell out or expire at any time, though ZDNET remains committed to finding, sharing, and updating the best product deals for you to score the best savings. MLB The Show 25 Cover Athlete Concepts And New Legends Needed

(Photo by Keith Birmingham/MediaNews Group/Pasadena Star-News via Getty Images)MediaNews Group via Getty ImagesWe got our first pieces of information on MLB The Show 25 this week, and the departure from the Sets and Seasons approach in Diamond Dynasty was a positive change for most fans. The next things were likely to learn about the game are the release date and cover athlete(s). Based on recent history, the Major League Spring Training schedule, and next years series of exhibition parks, it seems likely that March 22 will be the release date for The Show 25.As it pertains to the cover athlete, I kept it plural because this feels like a year that would make sense for dual cover athletes. Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani and New York Yankees great Aaron Judge are coming off historic seasons. The two players met in the World Series and both figure to be a major focus of the upcoming season. Judge and Ohtani, who won MVP awards for the American and National Leagues, respectively, are both former cover athletes for the game and play for teams in the two biggest markets in the United States.Dont be surprised if Sony San Diego goes in this direction for a version of the game that needs to lean into fan-friendly concepts as much as possible. The Legends Edition last year featured Derek Jeter, which marked the first year The Show had the Captain in the game as a legend. This years key Legends addition could be Seattle Mariners great and Japanese pioneer, Ichiro Suzuki.SEATTLE - SEPTEMBER 20: Ichiro Suzuki #51 of the Seattle Mariners stands at bat during the game ... [+] against the New York Yankees on September 20, 2009 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)Getty ImagesMORE FROMFORBES VETTEDMLB The Show hasnt featured Ichiro in the game since his retirement following the 2019 season. The Show 25 would be an excellent year to welcome back one of the greatest hitters in baseball history.Ichiro is expected to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame with the Class of 2025, so much would appear to align for the transcendent star who helped pave the way for Asian superstars like Ohtani. Ichiros contributions to baseball go beyond his on-field achievements, as he remains a cultural icon in Japan and worldwide. In addition to Ichiro, and in the interest of pleasing fans, it would also be great to see The Show finally add legends like Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Roger Clemens, Kirby Puckett, Jose Canseco, Bo Jackson, Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Ty Cobb, and more recent legends to the game.Bonds, A-Rod, Clemens, Canseco and others remain controversial figures in baseball, but their inclusion as legends in The Show could represent a shift in the series approach to the sports complex history. Weve already seen the beginnings of it with Sammy Sosa and Mack McGwire being added to MLB The Show 24.If these additions and marketing directions are paired with more layers added to franchise mode and Road to the Showwithout damaging the best aspect of the title, its gameplay2025 could be a banner year for the series. Sony San Diego has promised to expand franchise mode in The Show 25, addressing fan complaints from recent editions of the game. The hope is that the developers provide upgrades that users can feel and appreciate.

NYT Strands Hints, Spangram And Answers For Sunday, November 24
StrandsNYTLooking for Saturdays Strands hints, spangram and answers? You can find them here:Very very hard Strands today, in my opinion, so I am wondering if it took you as long as it took me. So here is some help. How To Play StrandsThe New York Times Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. Its in beta for now, which means itll only stick around if enough people play it every day.Theres a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and youll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.Youll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links two opposite sides of the board. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.Every letter is used once in one of the theme words and spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and its possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If youre playing on a touchscreen, double tap the last letter to submit your guess.Read More: The Series Finale Of What May Be Netflixs Best Show Is Now LiveIf you find three valid words of at least four letters that are not part of the theme, youll unlock the Hint button. Clicking this will highlight the letters that make up one of the theme words.Be warned: Youll need to be on your toes. Sometimes youll need to fill the missing word(s) in a phrase. On other days, the game may revolve around synonyms or homophones. The difficulty will vary from day to day, and the puzzle creators will try to surprise you sometimes. What Is Todays Strands Hint? The official hint will be followed by one I make up myself to push you a long a little. The spangram is:LITTLEAnd is found on the board here:StrandsNYTThe full list of answers is:LEAGUEDEVILRASCALSDIPPERSPOONWOMENFOOTROCKStrandsNYTYeah, this was hard. It was very difficult for me to figure out the connecting thread, so I thought I was just throwing up random words, and I used a lot of hints. Even after the spangram it was still tough. DIPPER took forever and you have to be pretty old to remember Little RASCALS. I am not sure I know the average age of a Strands player, however. Very tough puzzle if you ask me.Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

Charles Schwab to Offer Spot Trading, SEC Chair Gensler Calls for New Regulations
KEY TAKEAWAYSRick Wurster at Charles Schwab shared plans to add crypto spot trading to the platform in the foreseeable future.Unclear regulations and the hostile approach of some lawmakers are the biggest obstacles to crypto adoption for financial institutions in the US.Hester Peirce and Dan Gallagher are the most likely candidates to replace Gensler as the SEC Chair.Rick Wurster, the soon-to-become-CEO of investment firm Charles Schwab, confessed he doesnt own any crypto and now feels silly for it.Once US lawmakers develop clear digital assets regulations, Charles Schwab plans to introduce spot crypto trading to the platform. To Wursters relief, positive regulatory changes are already underway.Schwab Expands Crypto ServicesThe current regulations dont make it easy for institutions to offer crypto-related services. Vague definitions, regulation by enforcement, and lack of industry-specific tools (for example, the Howey test the SEC uses for securities is poorly suited to crypto) are the main roadblocks on the US path to innovation.Wurster admits hes never bought crypto and has no plans to do so now. However, he wants to streamline the process for Schwab clients wishing to invest in crypto directly.Charles Schwab already rolled out crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and futures contracts. Regulated financial vehicles that provide indirect exposure to crypto fall under stricter oversight and compliance standards, so they are less risky but often less profitable than owning your crypto.Spot trading is the next step toward becoming a comprehensive digital asset investment platform. Wurster expects Trumps administration to ease compliance for firms offering direct ownership of digital assets.Next SEC Chair: UnknownTrump might be the most controversial of all US presidents, so contrasting reactions to his victory were to be expected. While crypto investors are celebrating, SEC Chair Gary Gensler is quietly seething with anger and promised to resign on Trumps inauguration day.Genslers regulation-by-enforcement approach to crypto turned him into public enemy #1. This didnt spook Gensler, given that Bidens administration shared his views, but with the new president came big changes. As his final contribution, Gensler urged lawmakers to create clear rules for crypto sales and exchanges.Gensler believes regulations should promote transparency and investor protections, including proper disclosures. He drew parallels with the Great Depression to illustrate the consequences of uninformed investing.Genslers replacement is yet unknown. However, rumors have it Trump is considering Dan Gallagher, the Chief Legal Officer at Robinhood, who also served as a commissioner at the SEC from 2011 to 2015.Another candidate for Genslers chair is Hester Peirce, a sitting SEC commissioner and a vocal advocate for crypto. Besides, Pierce is a Republican, which could earn her a point in Trumps eyes.New Chapter for Crypto2025 looks like the beginning of a new era for crypto in the US. A change in leadership will likely bring favorable policies and encourage institutions like Charles Schwab to expand their crypto offerings. The question now is who will fill Genslers shoes? Well find out within the next two months.ReferencesAdd Techreport to Your Google News Feed Get the latest updates, trends, and insights delivered straight to your fingertips. Subscribe now! Apple Vulnerabilities Could Endanger Your Crypto One Is Not Patchable
KEY TAKEAWAYSApple reported a vulnerability that opens up users to data theft in the browser, including passwords and potentially crypto. The latest iOS updates should fix this vulnerability, so its imperative for users to update their devices, Macs, and mobile phones.JavaScriptCore and WebKit services are the root cause of the vulnerability, and Apple said theyve already been exploited by hackers.Apples M1, M2, and M3 Mac chips remain vulnerable to data theft, including crypto wallet-sensitive data, as the vulnerability is on the hardware. On Monday, Apple confirmed an iOS vulnerability that could result in massive crypto theft. An attacker could inject malicious code through JavaScript (web-based attack), which opens the way to a cross-site scripting attack.More importantly, the flaw was already discovered and misused by hackers.Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited on Intel-based MAC systems. AppleThis is further compounded by a March report that Apples last-gen chips (M1, M2, and M3 series) are vulnerable to cryptographic key theft.Lets see what this means for Apple users.Root Cause of the Vulnerability WebKit & JavaScriptApples analysis of the vulnerability narrows down the problem to two things:1. Web-based arbitrary code execution through JavaScriptCore. This was exploited on Intel-based Mac systems.2. Cross site scripting attacks through WebKit, similarly exploited on Intel-based Mac systems. Both issues have been addressed in the latest update, as Changpeng Zhao (Binance CEO) notified on X.If you havent updated your Intel-based Macbook, do it now. You need the latest version of WebKit and JavaScriptCore to patch this vulnerability.Otherwise, your crypto assets may be at risk.Apple issued a similar vulnerability report for iOS 18.1.1 and iPadOS 18.1.1. JavaScripCore and WebKit were also the culprits. As for the solution, an OS update should solve the issue.Free Access to Browser Passwords & Crypto KeysThats right, this vulnerability allowed hackers to see any sensitive data stored in your browser. This includes crypto wallet private keys.[] attackers could access sensitive data like private keys or passwords. Jeremiah OConnor, Trugard CTO and Co-FounderThis is further aggravated by a March report from Apple saying that the M1, M2, and M3 chips are also vulnerable.A different kind of vulnerability, mind you.Hackers can steal cryptographic keys through a prefetching exploit, which accesses data stored in the processor and then builds a cryptographic key that should be private. The problem is that this is a chip-level vulnerability and, thus, not patchable through software updates.Apple Just Why?The good news is that if you use a current-gen Apple chip, youre safe. The latest software updates removed the vulnerability, so your crypto and passwords are secure. The bad (or horrible) news is that M1, M2, and M3 chip users are still open to the prefetching exploit. But only if you install malware on your device. The only solution is to move your crypto wallets to other devices, like a Windows PC. Not ideal, but apparently necessary.ReferencesClick to expand and view referencesAdd Techreport to Your Google News Feed Get the latest updates, trends, and insights delivered straight to your fingertips. Novel Russian hacking method daisy chains Wi-Fi networks to reach intended target
In context: A new hacking technique raises concerns about how cyber warfare and espionage continue to evolve. As nation-state actors develop more sophisticated methods, the line between physical and digital security becomes increasingly blurred. Russian hackers have devised a highly sophisticated method of breaching Wi-Fi networks from afar that researchers have dubbed the "nearest neighbor attack," as it allows hackers to infiltrate target networks without physically approaching the premises. The new technique involves a multi-step process that leverages vulnerabilities in neighboring networks to breach the intended target. Instead of risking detection by getting close to the target, as has been the norm in previous Wi-Fi hacking attempts, hackers can now orchestrate their attacks from a safe distance.Cybersecurity firm Volexity uncovered this unprecedented Wi-Fi hacking technique while investigating a network breach targeting a customer in Washington, DC, in 2022. The firm's researchers traced the intrusion to a Russian hacker group known by various monikers, including Fancy Bear, APT28, and Unit 26165, part of Russia's GRU military intelligence agency.Wired notes that cybersecurity researcher Steven Adair revealed how his firm discovered this technique at the Cyberwarcon security conference held this week in Arlington, Virginia.A "nearest neighbor attack" operates through a series of calculated steps. Hackers first breach a vulnerable network in a building near the intended target. They then gain control of a laptop within this compromised network. They use the device's Wi-Fi from there to breach the targeted network. This method allows the attackers to remain physically distant while exploiting local Wi-Fi vulnerabilities. // Related StoriesIn the case investigated by Volexity, the attack's sophistication extended beyond a single jump. The researchers discovered evidence of a daisy chain of Wi-Fi network breaches that involved up to three separate networks before reaching the final target. The attack's success hinged on several technical elements, including credential exploitation, two-factor authentication bypass, and domain name leakage. The hackers were very determined, according to Volexity, making multiple intrusion attempts even after initial discovery. This technique is an evolution of the GRU's previous "close-access" hacking methods. In 2018, officials caught Russian spies attempting to hack the Wi-Fi network of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague using equipment hidden in a car trunk. The "nearest neighbor attack" seems to directly respond to the operational security risks exposed by that incident. This new attack vector presents significant challenges for cybersecurity professionals. Organizations must now consider the security of neighboring networks as part of their threat landscape. The ability to conduct these attacks from afar increases the potential pool of attackers and complicates identifying who is behind an attack. In light of this new threat, cybersecurity experts recommend several protective measures, including limiting Wi-Fi range, obfuscating network names, implementing more robust authentication protocols, and monitoring Wi-Fi access points, especially those near windows or external walls.Cybersecurity experts warn that nearest-neighbor attacks may become more prevalent. John Hultquist, a threat intelligence expert at Google-owned Mandiant, suggests that this technique represents a "major improvement" for close-access operations, and hackers are likely to use it more frequently.Image credit: Volexity
