How to use CleanMyMac to delete old files and speed up your Mac
MacworldIf your Mac is a few years old then you may well find that its not as quick on its feet as it used to be it may take a long time to start up properly, or to open and launch apps, or you may find that youre getting warnings about running out of disk space when you try to install new apps and software. Its relatively rare for your Macs physical hardware such as its internal hard-drive or solid-state drive to actually malfunction, but you may sometimes find that your drive is simply stuffed to the gills with old apps and files that are clogging up your system and slowing everything down.Storage SettingsApple does provide some help for these problems, and the macOS includes a number of built-in options that can help if you need to reclaim some of your Macs storage. In Ventura (13.0) and later versions of the macOS you can go to the Apple Menu to open the System Settings panel, select General and then select Storage. For older versions of the macOS you need to open the Apple Menu, select About This Mac, and then select Storage. The Storage settings panel gives you a break-down of how much storage your Macs drive has, how much has been used, and even the amount of space taken up by different types of files. You can see how much space is taken up by all your personal and work-related documents, your Photos and Music libraries, as well as Mail messages and other types of files. I was surprised to find that my MacBook had a whopping 30GB of files sitting in the Trash (Bin), so I could grab back 30GB of storage just by remembering to empty the Trash more often. Fortunately, the Storage Settings panel does include a number of options for managing your Macs storage including an option to empty the Trash automatically once a month. Theres also an Optimize Storage feature that deletes films and TV shows that youve already watched on Apple TV, and you can also save space by moving a lot of your files off your Mac up into iCloud Drive, although, of course, youll need to sign up for an iCloud+ subscription if you need more than the 5GB of online storage that Apple provides for free. (We have details of Apples iCloud storage plans here).PROMOTIONCleanMyMac X | Look inside your macOSFind hidden junk and free up the unseen System storage. Its not difficult to delete old files and documents that you dont need anymore although sometimes the hard part is simply remembering where you left them all in the first place. Its also easy to delete old apps, simply by dragging them from the Applications folder into the Bin. However, most apps also leave bits of data and other files floating around on your Macs drive as well, and these can still take up a lot of space even after youve deleted the main app itself.Theres also one other set of files that take up a lot of space that Apple really doesnt want you to touch at all. That, of course, is the macOS the Mac operating system itself. The macOS mainly lives in the System folder on your Macs hard drive, but it can also create lots of data files during daily use that can be found in various other locations on your Mac. Looking at the Storage Settings panel on my MacBook tells me that the macOS itself only takes up about 10GB of storage but theres another 20GB of system data files also stored on my Mac as well. I could probably save several gigabytes of storage space by deleting some of these files. However, Apple doesnt encourage you to mess with these system files yourself as there is a real possibility that you could accidentally delete something important and possibly even stop your Mac from working properly at all. What does CleanMyMac X do?CleanMyMacRead our reviewPrice When Reviewed:39,99 Best Prices Today:39.99 at MacPawThis is where a tool such as CleanMy Mac can come in handy. CleanMyMac was developed by MacPaw specifically to clear out old System files, unused apps and documents that might be slowing your Mac down. It also includes additional tools to remove malware and fine-tune your Macs performance. Its worth mentioning that the current version 5.x is called CleanMyMac and runs on macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later, but the previous version 4.x was called CleanMyMac X, and can still be downloaded for use on older versions of the macOS.You can buy CleanMyMac directly from the MacPaw website, with several options available. You can either buy it for a one-time fee of $119.95/101.95 or pay an annual subscription of $39.95/30.95. There are also multi-user licenses available, as well as student discounts and volume licenses for business users. MacPaw states that CleanMyMac has been notarized and approved by Apple, so it should be safe to download from the web. Theres also a version available from the Mac App Store as well, but that version of the program lacks a few features that are available in the full version that you buy directly from MacPaw, as Apple prefers to avoid features that delve too deeply into the macOS itself.CleanMyMac X is one of our favorite Mac cleaner apps that were reviewed and compared in our roundup of the best Mac cleaner apps. How to use CleanMyMac1.Smart ScanFoundryCleanMyMac provides a wide range of different tools, but theyre organized into five main categories, which are listed in the sidebar on the left-hand side of the apps main window. These categories are Cleanup, Protection, Performance, Applications and My Clutter (the icons for each category arent labelled, but theres a tool tip that appears when you hover your mouse over each icon).Theres also one other option available when you first launch the app, called Smart Care. This allows the app to automatically scan your Mac and make suggestions for all the different types of files that you can delete to save space, as well as other options for boosting your Macs performance. When the app has finished scanning your Mac it displays the results as a set of five tiles, which reflect the five main categories of tools within the program, so lets take a closer look at those now.2.CleanupFoundryTop of the list in the sidebar is the Cleanup category. There are four tools in here, with each tool represented by a tile that shows a quick summary of its results and the files that it has found. One of the most important tools is System Junk, which deals with those mysterious system data files that can be found scattered around various locations on your Macs drive. Fortunately, CleanMyMac knows where to look for these files and, most importantly, it knows how to delete system junk without affecting important files that your Mac needs in order to run properly.Theres a Trash Bins tool that can empty your main Bin, but if you give it permission it can also quickly clear out the trash bins that are included within apps like Photos or Mail too. The app can also locate multiple versions of binaries (programs) and documents that may be taking up extra space.3.Review Your ResultsScreenshotFoundryEach tile within CleanMyMac shows you a quick summary of the files that it has found, and you can quickly delete those files simply by pressing the Clean button. However, theres also a Review button for each tile that lets you delve a little deeper and shows you more details about the individual files that it has found. Ive got quite a few cache files left over from various games, so I can just go ahead and hit the Clean button to get rid of those automatically.4.ProtectionFoundryThe second set of tools within CleanMyMac is designed to protect both your Mac and your privacy. Again, theres a set of tiles that summarise the results for different tools, which include malware protection, temporary files left by Safari and other browsers, and aliases linked to recently opened apps and documents. CleanMyMac can scan your Mac for malware, but its worth stressing that it doesnt provide the same protection as dedicated anti-virus apps such as BitDefender or Norton, so its worth considering alternatives if you really are worried about viruses on your Mac.5.PerformanceFoundryPerformance is the main reason most of us decide to clean up our Macs, so this is a key set of tools. The three tiles here recommend a number of maintenance tasks that can help to keep things running smoothly. They also check for Login items that launch whenever your turn on your Mac, and items that may run in the background without you realizing. As you probably know, there is a similar option for showing Login and Background items in your Macs System Settings, but pressing the Review button in CleanMyMac may provide a little extra detail that may not show up in System Settings such as the fact that I have about 14 different Adobe apps running in the background on my MacBook. Integos Mac Internet Security is our recommendation in our round-up of Mac antivirus apps.6.ApplicationsScreenshotFoundryYou dont need CleanMyMac to tell you when theres an update available for the macOS, of course, but it can provide additional information about various apps that have updates available, or apps that you may have tried to remove in the recent past. Theres a tile that lists App Leftovers, which are files left behind when you delete the main application file itself (with my games library being a big offender here once more). There are also files that are sometimes left behind during the installation of new apps. CleanMyMac can also provide reminders about old applications that havent been used for a while, which you might be able to delete in order to free up some space.7.My ClutterFoundryWe all have lots of old files that we no longer need stored on our Mac drives, but sometimes it can be hard to remember where they all are. CleanMyMac can scan individual folders that you specify in order to locate duplicate files, old downloads that you dont need anymore, or particularly large files that are taking up a lot of space. It can detect duplicate photos too although it will ask for permission to scan your Photos library before doing so. Again, the tiles in CleanMyMac give you a quick summary of the files that its found, and you can press Review to browse through the various files in more detail before deleting them.8.Memory hogs and moreScreenshotFoundryOne feature of CleanMyMac that is sometimes overlooked is the pulldown menu that appears in your Macs main menu bar. This is available even when CleanMyMac itself isnt running, so its a good way of quickly checking to see if there are any problems on your Mac. Again, theres a series of tiles that provide quick summaries for details such as your laptops battery health and running temperature. It can show you the amount of memory and processor power being used by various apps, and lets you quickly shut down any apps that are hogging too much memory. It can even check the speed of your wi-fi network and tell you how much data youve downloaded recently.

CleanMyMac 5 review: veteran Mac cleaner updated for 2024
MacworldAt a glanceExpert's RatingProsImproved interface and ease of use Wide range of cleaning tools Subscription or one-time purchase availableConsMore expensive than some rivals Limited malware features Some technical knowledge still neededOur Verdict CleanMacMac is a good multi-purpose utility for the macOS operating system, and its bright, friendly user interface lends easy access to several handy utilities to clear up disk space, protect user privacy, optimize performance, update applications, uninstall software, and help prevent malware and adware. Price When ReviewedThis value will show the geolocated pricing text for product undefinedBest Pricing TodayRetailerPriceMacPaw39.99View DealPrice comparison from over 24,000 stores worldwideProductPricePrice comparison from BackmarketPrice When Reviewed39,99 Best Prices Today: CleanMyMacRetailerPriceMacPaw39.99View DealPrice comparison from over 24,000 stores worldwideProductPricePrice comparison from BackmarketThere are lots of cleanup apps available that claim to speed up your Mac by getting rid of old files that might be clogging up your Macs drive, deleting duplicate photos, or uninstalling apps and software completely so that they dont leave behind any old files that are no longer needed. However, few of those cleanup apps are as comprehensive as CleanMyMac from MacPaw, which has been updated to version 5.0 (and dropped the X from its name, as version 4 was called CleanMyMac X).You can buy CleanMyMac either from MacPaws own website, or from the Mac App Store, although the version sold on the Mac App Store omits a few features (due to technical restrictions imposed by Apple). If you buy it directly from MacPaw then CleanMyMac requires an annual subscription of $39.95/30.95, or you can buy it for a one-time fee of $119.95/101.95. CleanMyMac 5.0 requires macOS 11 Big Sur or later, but the previous CleanMyMac X (4.0) can still be downloaded for macOS 10 Catalina.See how CleanMyMac compares to other Mac Cleaners in our Best Mac Cleaner software round-up.Its not the cheapest cleanup app available for the Mac, but CleanMyMac provides dozens of different tools for deleting old files and data. And, like previous versions, the new version 5.0 groups all those tools into five main categories that focus on different tasks Cleanup, Protection, Performance, Applications and My Clutter. Its worth exploring each set of tools to see how the program works but, for convenience, theres also a Smart Care feature that gives your Mac drive a quick check-up and summarises the result of its scans for all five categories. The Cleanup tools focus on deleting junk: old files and documents that are taking up valuable space, or old system files that are no longer needed. ScreenshotFoundryThe Protection tools dig a bit deeper and can scan for malware that might cause a threat to your Mac. While the app works well with macOS Gatekeeper function in working to prevent malware installation on your Mac, its still possible to install a good amount of questionable software. Yes, the Malware Removal module was able to detect and quarantine several threats (such as OSX.EvilEgg, DazzleSpy, and parts of the AdWind malware), but it left segments of AdWind installed in tests, as well as missed the questionable WaveBrowser, a mock version of Adobe Flash Player Install Manager, Adobe album and the infamous MacSecurity app, which had to be removed with another application. This was disappointing considering MacPaws well-marketed and hyped use of the Moonlock Engine for this purpose. CleanMyMac isnt a dedicated anti-virus program so it doesnt provide the same level of protection as the programs featured in our Best Antivirus for Mac round-up.The Performance tools help with routine maintenance, clearing out the DNS cache that is used for web browsing, re-indexing Spotlight and Mail to speed up search results, and keeping track of your Login and Background items (which you can also do using System Settings on your Mac).A common task that many people ask about is how to completely delete applications from their Mac, as many applications leave behind old files and bits of data even after you delete the application itself. The Applications tools in CleanMyMac can help with that task, deleting app leftovers and installation files, and also reminding you of any old applications that you may not have used recently. Finally, theres My Clutter, which can scan either individual folders or your entire Mac drive to locate old files that you havent used for a long time, or particularly large files that take up a lot of space. This latest version gains some new features here, including the ability to identify duplicate files, or photos that look very similar so that you can delete them if you want to. There are also some new diagnostic tools, including the ability to identify apps that are using a lot of battery power on your laptop.ScreenshotFoundryHowever, the most important change in version 5.0 is probably the redesigned interface. Previous versions of CleanMyMac could use each set of tools to scan your Mac automatically, but would then throw long lists of files and data onto the screen and leave you to decide which files you wanted to keep or delete which could be confusing for many users who dont have the necessary level of technical knowledge.CleanMyMac 5.0 simplifies things by displaying the results of its scans as a series of tiles that give you a quick summary of each scan. So the Application tools will display tiles that break the results down into app leftovers that are left behind when you delete applications, or installation files that are used when you first install a new app. Other tiles will tell you about apps that are waiting for updates, or old apps that havent been used for a long time. If you want more information then each tile has a Review button that can display the entire list of relevant files, or you can simply hit the Remove button and allow CleanMyMac to automatically delete everything for you.Should You Buy CleanMyMac?Some people do argue that utilities such as this are completely unnecessary, and it is certainly possible to perform most of these Mac maintenance tasks yourself as long as you have a reasonable amount of technical knowledge. But, if you dont know your DNS cache from your universal binaries, then a well-designed app such as CleanMacMac can simplify these tasks for you, and help to keep your Mac fighting fit.

ChatGPTs Windows app beats Microsoft Copilot for productivity
Microsofts Copilot AI assistant appears to be transforming into a chatty AI sidekick, and Ive seen quite a few Copilot users who arent happy about it. Thankfully, theres now another option for anyone interested in using AI purely for productivity a full-featured ChatGPT app for Windows PCs.Even at launch, ChatGPTs Windows app is already a better productivity tool than Copilot. Its quite a setback for Microsofts AI assistant which, when it first launched as Bing Chat, had a more powerful AI model than ChatGPT and offered features that went beyond what ChatGPT offered, such as the ability to search the web.Things have certainly changed.Want to stay on top of the latest Windows PC features AI and beyond? My free Windows Intelligence newsletter delivers all the best Windows tips straight to your inbox. Plus, youll get free Windows Field Guides as a special welcome bonus!Meet ChatGPTs new Windows appOpenAI technically launched its ChatGPT app for Windows in October. But at the time, the ChatGPT Windows app was only for paying ChatGPT subscribers. Now, its free for anyone to use including free ChatGPT users. That means you can now get ChatGPTs Windows app from the Microsoft Store, whether youre paying for the premium version of the service or not. The app runs on both Windows 11 and Windows 10 PCs. Once you launch it, youll have to sign in with an account. (The web-based version of ChatGPT doesnt require an account, but the desktop app does.)The official ChatGPT app offers more options than Copilot.Chris Hoffman, IDG(While Im focusing on Windows here, its worth noting that official ChatGPT apps are also available for Mac, Android, iPhone, and iPad.)ChatGPTs app is just like Copilot but betterUnder the hood, both Copilot and ChatGPT use much of the same technology. While Googles Gemini assistant uses Googles own AI models, Microsofts Copilot uses OpenAIs ChatGPT models along with something Microsoft calls the Microsoft Prometheus model.Comparing the two, youll first notice how similar the interface is. But ChatGPT feels more like a more focused productivity tool, whereas Copilot feels like its trying to be more friendly and approachable. Copilot has pastel colors, lots of graphics, and greets you by name with requests about how your day is going.Microsoft Copilot is starting to feel more like an AI friend than an AI assistant.Chris Hoffman, IDGFor example: Both ChatGPT and Copilot offer voice chat. When I click the voice chat button in ChatGPT, I hear silence the AI model wont respond until I speak to it. When I click the voice chat button in Copilot, I hear a friendly Hey Chris! Hows your day going? It really makes me wonder: Were few people using Copilot in Windows? Did Microsoft have to redesign it to make it more approachable?ChatGPT provides a selection of voice options, just like Copilot does.Chris Hoffman, IDGChatGPTs app also beats Copilot when it comes to working with files:Copilot lets you drag and drop image files to upload them but thats it.ChatGPT lets you drag and drop PDF files, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and more to the ChatGPT app to upload them and ask questions about them. Its just a much more powerful interface. ChatGPT offers more flexibility with its built-in hotkeys, too:To launch Copilot, youll need a new-ish laptop that comes with a Copilot key on its keyboard. (Microsoft used to let the Windows+C hotkey launch Copilot, but thats been removed.)To launch ChatGPT, you can press Alt+Space or you can change this shortcut to anything youd prefer in the ChatGPT apps settings. (If you have Microsoft PowerToys installed, the Alt+Space shortcut may launch the PowerToys Run launcher instead. Youll need to change the hotkey for either tool.)If you do have a laptop with a Copilot key, youll be able to go into the Settings app in Windows and tell Windows to launch the ChatGPT app instead of the Copilot app when you press it.ChatGPT launches a convenient small window when you press the shortcut.Chris Hoffman, IDGChatGPT also offers more flexibility when it comes to working with saved conversations:Copilot will let you start a new conversation, if you like but thats it.ChatGPT lets you start new chats, and it also lets you switch to recent chats youve used right from its sidebar. Some features are similar. Both Copilot and ChatGPT can search the web for you to find up-to-date information. Neither can search the web while youve having a voice conversation, however hopefully thatll arrive in the future. Both ChatGPT and Copilot offer different answers, too. You should experiment with both to see which best fits your needs. However, in my testing, I found that ChatGPT was more verbose in its responses in a good way. Since the update where Copilot started trying to be your best friend, Copilot has been giving shorter responses with a focus on follow-up questions for you, to keep the conversation going.Copilot Pro still beats ChatGPT for Office integrationFor all of ChatGPTs advantages, Copilot does still have one trick up its sleeve: If you pay for a $20 per month Copilot Pro subscription, you get access to Copilot AI integration in Microsoft Office apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. If this is a feature you like, Copilot is unbeaten. ChatGPT cant get its hooks into Office apps directly. And its a good argument for paying Microsofts $20-per-month Copilot Pro subscription rather than OpenAIs $20-per-month ChatGPT Plus subscription if youre going to be spending money on a premium AI chatbot subscription. But for people who arent spending any money, ChatGPT is a better productivity tool.I havent found it worthwhile to spend $20 a month to use Copilot in Office apps, although I use Microsoft Word and Excel all the time. But everyone has different workflows, and some professionals are finding it to be useful.ChatGPT is more of a productivity tool than CopilotI havent covered every option in the ChatGPT app here. In general, ChatGPT has more options and feels like more of a productivity tool, while Copilot feels more like its trying to be the new ELIZA. (ELIZA was a chatbot from the 1960s. It was a mock therapist that asks questions like How does that make you feel?)ChatGPT also offers more for free, for anyone whose company isnt already footing a premium subscription. For example: ChatGPT lets you upload Office documents to analyze them; on Microsofts side, that feature requires the $20 per month Copilot Pro subscription to do the same thing in Word or other Microsoft 365 apps. And, again, Copilot refuses to let you launch it with a hotkey unless you buy a new PC that comes with a Copilot key; ChatGPT lets you choose your own key.ChatGPT pulls ahead for nowIs the race over? Of course not. Remember, when Microsoft launched Bing Chat, it surpassed ChatGPT. Bing Chat originally had more advanced AI models that only came to ChatGPT later. Microsoft could improve the ChatGPT app and integrate it better with Windows currently, its really just a web app. And Microsoft could create its own AI models and use them with Copilot. But, for now, ChatGPT is in the lead here. Windows users who rely on ChatGPT or Windows users who just want a more powerful AI chatbot app than what Microsoft is delivering with Copilot should install the app and give it a look.Want to learn about the latest Windows features and apps that can boost your productivity?
