• Addams Family Values Gets First 4K Blu-Ray Release, Just In Time For Thanksgiving
    www.gamespot.com
Addams Family Values on 4K Blu-ray $26 Preorder at Amazon There are many, many holiday-themed movies to choose from, but not a whole ton that are specifically oriented around the US's Thanksgiving holiday. One particular perennial Thanksgiving favorite, though, is the darkly hilarious Addams Family Values, the second movie adaptation of the old Addams Family sitcom from the 1960s, and the progenitor to Netflix's Wednesday. And this fall, Addams Family Values is getting a 4K Blu-ray release for the very first time, 31 years after it was originally released in 1993. You could watch it on Thanksgiving and then jump right into the Christmas season with How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which is also releasing on 4K Blu-ray for the first time the same day. Addams Family Values on 4K Blu-ray $26 Addams Family Values lands on 4K Blu-ray on October 29, and the release will include a digital copy code.In this story, the spooky Addams Family--Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Wednesday, Pugsley and Grandmama--welcome a new member of the family, Gomez and Morticia's new baby Pubert. They hire a nanny named Debbie to take care of Pubert, but it turns out she's a serial killer who plans to seduce, marry and then murder Uncle Fester. One part of her plan involves sending Wednesday and Pugsley to a sleepaway camp, where they have to put on a Thanksgiving play--it's one to remember, and a big part of the reason Addams Family Values is a cult classic to this day.Another major contributor is the way that Addams Family Values balances out its extremely dark sense of humor with a light tone--it's a balance that many films have attempted, but few have actually achieved, with Addams Family Values being a rare example of one that pulled it off. Preorder at Amazon The Addams Family franchise has been around for a very long time--the titular family first appeared in a comic strip in The New Yorker in 1938, and then was adapted into a sitcom that ran for two seasons starting in 1964, followed by animated series in 1973 and 1992, two live-action movies and a live-action TV series in the 1990s, a pair of animated films in 2019 and 2021, and also the 2022 Wednesday series on Netflix, which could very well be the most popular iteration of the franchiseContinue Reading at GameSpot

  • Eight Ways to Hang Pictures Without Making Holes in the Walls
    lifehacker.com
If youre a renter or live in a dorm, there might be rules against using nails or screws to hang pictures. Similarly, if your walls are made from concrete, stone, or brick, it can be a hassle to drive hardware into the wall to hang art without causing damage. Luckily, there are some sneaky ways to display photos and art without surrendering your deposit.Use temporary adhesiveUsing tape-like adhesive strips that are designed to let go without damaging your walls is one option for a no-damage art installation. The strips can be applied to a clean, drywall surface and then you can press your picture onto the strips. When youre ready to take them down, theres a tab to pull that will release the strips without taking any paint with them. These strips will have a maximum weight listed, so be sure to read that before choosing the size strips you need. This type of adhesive can be used on most painted, smooth surfaces, but they dont stick well to unpainted concrete, masonry, or unfinished wood. Command Medium and Large Picture Hanging Strips, Damage Free Hanging Picture Hangers, No Tools Wall Hanging Strips for Living Spaces, White, 12 Medium Pairs and 16 Large Pairs $12.89 at Amazon $22.99 Save $10.10 Shop Now Shop Now $12.89 at Amazon $22.99 Save $10.10 Use Command hooksCommand hooks work similarly to adhesive strips, except that they come with a hook to hang a frame from rather than sticking your picture directly to the wall. These hooks come in a variety of sizes for different-sized frames and can be removed by pulling a release tab, just like the strips. You can also find picture stabilizer hooks designed to slot into frames to keep them steady and level on the wall. Like the adhesive strips, these work best on finished, smooth surfaces.Prop pictures against the wallIf you cant hang your pictures up, you can try leaning them instead. Using a desk, dresser, or other source, you can lean frames against the wall to display them. You can also use this method with an existing wall shelf or mantle if youve got one. Taking advantage of chunky molding for this purpose can also help you find spots to lean your art without making holes in the walls.Repurpose an old ladderIf you have an old ladder or a blanket ladder, you can use clips or ribbon to hang art from the rungs. Lean the ladder against the wall, and you have an instant art display without any holes in the wall. When making your display, make sure that the ladder youre using has rubber feet to avoid damaging the floor. 6-Tier Blanket Ladder Wooden, 5.7FT(66.5'') Blanket Quilt Towel Holder Rack Decorative Ladder, Easy Assembly, Rustic Farmhouse Ladder Shelf for The Living Room Bedroom Bathroom Home Decor, Brown $46.99 at Amazon Shop Now Shop Now $46.99 at Amazon Use an easelIf you have a larger piece that you want to make into a focal point, you can use an easel to display it. This method for displaying pictures can also give your art some height and move it away from other furniture. Be sure to measure your piece and get an easel thats the right size for what you want to display so that your easel doesnt tip over.Use ribbon or string and your curtain rodFor lighter pictures, you can swag string or ribbon from a curtain rod, and use clothespins or binder clips to attach pictures. You can also choose to hang ribbon or string vertically, although youll need to tie loops into your ribbon or string to have an attachment point for your clips. This style of display works for unframed pictures only because a frame would likely be too heavy for the curtain rod as well as the clips.Lean a bulletin boardIf you have a large bulletin board, you can make it into a photo display by leaning it on top of a desk or dresser and then adding your art to it with push pins. You will likely only want to do this with prints, as youll make holes in the paper with tacks. If you want to use the bulletin board method without making holes in the paper, you can use push pins with clips to hang unframed photos and art. VIZ-PRO Cork Notice Board, 48 X 36 Inches, Cork Bulletin Board with Black Aluminium Frame $60.90 at Amazon Shop Now Shop Now $60.90 at Amazon Use cork panelsIf you have furniture you dont mind sticking something to, you can apply self-adhesive cork panels to it to give yourself a display surface for art. Using the previously described push pin method, you can use the cork tiles to turn the side or back of a bookcase or the doors of an armoire into a no-damage art display.

  • Turkey unblocks Instagram after talks to address its concerns about crime and censorship
    www.engadget.com
Turkey has restored access to Instagram after the social media site agreed to meet the countrys demands around censorship and crime-related content, Bloomberg reports. Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced the agreement in a post on X. Instagram was blocked for a little over a week; users in the country abruptly lost access on August 2, but no official explanation for the decision was provided at the time. However, the block came after Turkeys head of communications, Fahrettin Altun, accused the platform of censoring posts that expressed condolences for Ismail Haniyeh, a Hamas leader who was recently killed. In the post on Saturday, Uraloglu cited concerns over content relating to catalog crimes which include murder, sexual assault, drug trafficking and torture, according to Reuters and censorship imposed on Instagram users. NetBlocks, which first reported that Instagram had been blocked in Turkey earlier this month, confirmed on Saturday that access had begun to return. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/social-media/turkey-unblocks-instagram-after-talks-to-address-its-concerns-about-crime-and-censorship-212231212.html?src=rss

  • How to be a good leader according to USWNT coach Emma Hayes
    www.fastcompany.com
What is leadership? Good question. For some, it involves delving into a lucky bag of inspirational quotes from excellent orators and trying to find a personal fit. For others, it requires the comfort blanket of a plan that worked for someone else in the same field. All leaders scavenge bits and pieces. Theres nothing wrong with that, but for me the essence of leadership is understanding your team and how your organization works. It depends on the application of interlocking virtues, the way people in our club, company, or department conduct themselves with our values and our collective goals. It means knowing what to do, when to do it, and why you do it.It doesnt matter whether you are managing an office, running a production line, or coaching an elite sports team. Your primary role is to facilitate, to project manage. I see myself as a head contractor.Im building a house to the highest specifications, knowing the ground can shift suddenly beneath my feet. The job is fraught with daily difficulty. I have to synchronize a diverse group of highly skilled workers. I must recognize and weed out the coasters who cut corners. Principles are my foundation stones.I oversee the architectural plans. They must be accurate, but they are not sacrosanct. They can be amended, subtly, if the need arises. There are so many different challenges, and some of them you simply dont see coming. Your response in real time is the key to keeping everyone moving in the right direction. People often say thats easier done with experience, without really defining what experience is.Learn from failureI believe experience refers to wisdom, which is accumulated through failure. Experience is how we overcome the curve balls thrown in our path that develop our dexterity and durability as leaders. Yet I see very few individuals and organizations put those lessons into effective use. That doesnt signal a lack of commitment, but rather more of a confusion about the nature of the task.Leadership is draining. You have to constantly listen well, communicate clearly, and reflect wisely. You must have a deep understanding of the human condition and be hyperaware of what makes people tick. Assume nothing. The range of motivational factors within your workforce is surprisingly wide. Age is an element that can creep up on you. Broadly speaking, I coach twentysomethings. Our social and cultural reference points are different. My understanding of them must shift constantly as I grow older and the world around us changes. In my business, iconic players from a previous generation lose their relevance startlingly fast. No disrespect intended, and I realize this will be treated as heresy on Merseyside, but the vast majority of todays kids would not have a clue who Kenny Dalglish is. Its my job to bridge the generations and find more timely examples of excellence to expand upon. I can do that while remaining true to old school values because when it comes to teaching and learning there are eternal truths. To give an example, I live by the motto, Stand, and live it every day. It may not be fashionable, but it works for me.Everyday examples make the best points. For instance, why do most people commit speeding offenses? Because they are running late or trying to get somewhere in a hurry? Youd think so, but most of the time its because they lose concentration.Theyre on a familiar route, on autopilot. (I should know. I got my speeding tickets on the road I use every day.) But when you are on a new road, in a different environment with fresh landmarks, you dont make the same mistakes. In life there is always more than one path to take, and its my job to direct my people on different routes. Its a simple premise: if you want a different result next time, take a different road. If your workshops or team-building exercises are generating the same stale responses, try a new format or environment.Excerpted with permission from A Completely Different Game: My Leadership Playbook by Emma Hayes with contributions by Michael Calvin. • ORA utilises LA's fallen street trees inside Uchi West Hollywood restaurant

Vertical fins of live-edge wood, which was sourced from fallen street trees, divide spaces at this Japanese restaurant in Los Angeles by local studio ORA.Uchi West Hollywood is the first West Coast location for chef Tyson Cole's Austin-based chain, operated by Hai Hospitality Group.Fallen street trees sourced from across LA form spatial dividers through the restaurantSituated on a prominent corner along Santa Monica Boulevard, the 5,200-square-foot (483-square-metre) restaurant seats 160 covers amongst a timber-dominant interior."We collaborated closely with local artists, makers and craftsmen, elevating humble natural materials to create a sense of surprise and connection to the unexpected natural beauty and spirit of our city," said ORA founding principal Oonagh Ryan.Custom pieces created for the space include a sculptural light fixture by Kazuki Takizawa above the bar counterOne of the main collaborations for this project was with Angel City Lumber, which sourced wood from 25 Aleppo Pine trees that had fallen across 14 different city neighbourhoods."With an average diameter of 30 inches and an average length of nine feet, nearly 26 tons of local LA trees were turned into wood for Uchi," said the team. The live-edge wood boards trace sinuous lines through the space, creating more intimate seating areasThe 42 logs from these trees were cut into live-edge boards of varied lengths, and suspended vertically from the restaurant's ceiling to form spatial dividers. The panels follow sinuous lines that demarcate seating areas, and are followed around the top by vertical wood bands that conceal cove lighting designed by Dot Dash.Travertine is mounted behind the sushi barIn between, hand-troweled plaster across the ceiling helps to improve acoustics in the space.Meanwhile, custom concrete planters by landscape firm SBLA run underneath the dividers and extend out to a patio with further dining space.Light boxes above the banquettes create silhouettes of the decorative objects displayed in frontThe remainder of the earth-toned material palette is dominated by woods such as white oak and walnut, complemented by upholstery from Maharam, Knoll and Carol Leather. At the perimeter, bespoke booth seating by ORA is placed below glowing light boxes that create silhouettes of decorative objects displayed on shelves in front.Read: Stitched brick wall welcomes guests to Uchi Miami restaurant by Michael HsuStriations in travertine panels mounted behind both the sushi bar and drinks bar are accentuated by thin metal shelves for storing dishes and bottles respectively. Also in the bar area, a custom sculptural light fixture created by LA artist Kazuki Takizawa to evoke cherry blossoms hangs above the end of the stone counter.Custom concrete planters below the wooden board dividers extend out to the patio dining areaBoth the solid white oak and brass bar stools by Lawson-Fenning and the handmade ceramic lamps by Ceramicah were made locally.Other California-based artists represented in the space include Liisa Liiva, Molly Haynes, Rajiv Khilnani and Rachel Duvall. The corridor to the bathrooms is lined with thin wooden stripsThe bathrooms are reached via a corridor lined with thin vertical wooden strips, and are themselves clad in dark grey tiles.Uchi which means "house" in Japanese also has locations in Austin, Miami, Dallas and Denver, while its sister brand Uchiko has an outpost in Houston designed by Michael Hsu.The photography is by Eric Staudenmaier.Project credits:Architect: ORAInterior design: ORAFurniture and accessories: Hai Hospitality and ORALighting: Dot DashLandscape: Stephen Billings Landscape ArchitectsStructural: Nous EngineeringMechanical: Engineered SolutionsElectrical: TEK Engineering GroupFoodservice design: MyersContractor: Build GroupLumber shop: Angel City LumberMillwork fabricator: Architectural Woodwork of MontanaThe post ORA utilises LA's fallen street trees inside Uchi West Hollywood restaurant appeared first on Dezeen.
