The emoji are so popular that one artist has now turned Apples running shoe emoji into a real product.You can now buy shoes that look like an emoji designed by AppleAs reported by The Verge, artist and designer Jose Wong decided to create real running shoes based on the design of the Apple-made emoji, known to many iPhone, iPad and Mac users. Called The Shoe 1, it will be available in sizes ranging from 5 to 12 and will be sold online for $219.90 a pair.If The Shoe 1 or Apples running shoe emoji looks familiar to you, thats because the emoji was inspired by the classic New Balance 574, which was often worn by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. However, the emoji replaces the New Balance logo with two parallel strokes.Wong used elements from both New Balance 574 and Apple products to create The Shoe 1. For instance, the packaging is very minimalist with an envelope that reads Designed by Josewong in China. The insoles, on the other hand, feature an impression of an iPhones internal components.The shoes feature an upper section made of full-grain nubuck leather combined with mesh for breathability, while the midsole and heel are made from lightweight EVA foam paired with a polyurethane rim to deliver a mix of comfort and all-day support.Those interested in The Shoe 1 can order them now. Wong says that the shoes will start shipping next week and that all sales will be final with no refunds. Units will most likely be limited. X app developer May Ly tweeted last week.Musk himself resorted to an odd excuse for the new feature."It's much cleaner with engagement numbers turned off," he wrote. "You can still see view count if you care."Grass GreenerWhy Musk would suddenly care about a "cleaner" user interface is a bit of a mystery. Ever since taking over the social media platform in 2022, the company has littered the network with a confusing array of colored checkmarks, unnecessary info, and a barrage of disruptive ads.But it doesn't take much reading between the lines to wonder if X is paying attention to the astronomic rise of Twitter alternatives BlueSky and Threads. Over the past week alone, BlueSky's daily active users have soared to 3.5 million, a massive 300 percent increase since Election Day, according to Similarweb.As of earlier this month, Threads had a whopping 275 monthly active users. FUTURISM.COMFormer Google CEO Alarmed by Teen Boys Falling in Love With AI Girlfriends"You put a 12- or 13-year-old in front of these things..."TFW AI GFFormer Google CEO Eric Schmidt seems mighty concerned about today's youth becoming obsessed with AI girlfriends.During a recent interview on "The Prof G Show" podcast, Schmidt suggested that both parents and young people are ill-equipped to handle what he calls an "unexpected problem of existing technology."These AI companions are, as the former Google CEO said, so "perfect" that they end up enthralling young people and causing them to disconnect from the real world."That kind of obsession is possible," he told NYU Stern professor Scott Galloway, "especially for people who are not fully formed."While women are also turning to AI romantic partners, Schmidt said that young men are particularly susceptible as they "turn to the online world for enjoyment and sustenance." Thanks to algorithms pushing problematic content, these young men often stumble across dangerous content, be it extremist influencers or manipulative chatbots."You put a 12- or 13-year-old in front of these things, and they have access to every evil as well as every good in the world," he told Galloway, "and theyre not ready to take it."Scared StraightWe've seen this play out recently in the real world to devastating effect when a 14-year-old boy in Florida who died by suicide at the beginning of the year after a "Game of Thrones"-themed chatbot hosted on Character.AI encouraged him to do so.Though Setzer's story is far more extreme than most, it highlights the dangers posed by these lifelike chatbots and without proper regulation, these tragedies are likely to keep occurring. THEHACKERNEWS.COMCritical Flaw in ProjectSend Under Active Exploitation Against Public-Facing ServersNov 27, 2024Ravie LakshmananVulnerability / Software SecurityA critical security flaw impacting the ProjectSend open-source file-sharing application has likely come under active exploitation in the wild, according to findings from VulnCheck.The vulnerability, originally patched over a year-and-a-half ago as part of a commit pushed in May 2023 , was not officially made available until August 2024 with the release of version r1720. As of November 26, 2024, it has been assigned the CVE identifier CVE-2024-11680 (CVSS score: 9.8). Synacktiv, which reported the flaw to the project maintainers in January 2023, described it as an improper authorization check that allows an attacker to execute malicious code on susceptible servers."An improper authorization check was identified within ProjectSend version r1605 that allows an attacker to perform sensitive actions such as enabling user registration and auto validation, or adding new entries in the whitelist of allowed extensions for uploaded files," it said in a report published in July 2024."Ultimately, this allows to execute arbitrary PHP code on the server hosting the application."VulnCheck said it observed unknown threat actors targeting public-facing ProjectSend servers being targeted by leveraging exploit code released by Project Discovery and Rapid7. The exploitation attempts are believed to have commenced in September 2024.The attacks have also been found to enable the user registration feature to gain post-authentication privileges for follow-on exploitation, indicating that they are not confined to scanning for vulnerable instances."We are likely in the 'attackers installing web shells' territory (technically, the vulnerability also allows the attacker to embed malicious JavaScript, too, which could be an interesting and different attack scenario)," VulnCheck's Jacob Baines said."If an attacker has uploaded a web shell, it can be found in a predictable location in upload/files/ off of the webroot."An analysis of internet-exposed ProjectSend servers has revealed that a mere 1% of them are using the patched version (r1750), with all the remaining instances running either an unnamed release or version r1605, which came out in October 2022.In light of what appears to be widespread exploitation, users are recommended to apply the latest patches as soon as possible to mitigate the active threat.Found this article interesting? THEHACKERNEWS.COMResearchers Discover "Bootkitty" First UEFI Bootkit Targeting Linux KernelsNov 27, 2024Ravie LakshmananLinux / MalwareCybersecurity researchers have shed light on what has been described as the first Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) bootkit designed for Linux systems.Dubbed Bootkitty by its creators who go by the name BlackCat, the bootkit is assessed to be a proof-of-concept (PoC) and there is no evidence that it has been put to use in real-world attacks. Also tracked as IranuKit, it was uploaded to the VirusTotal platform on November 5, 2024."The bootkit's main goal is to disable the kernel's signature verification feature and to preload two as yet unknown ELF binaries via the Linux init process (which is the first process executed by the Linux kernel during system startup)," ESET researchers Martin Smolr and Peter Strek said.The development is significant as it heralds a shift in the cyber threat landscape where UEFI bootkits are no longer confined to Windows systems alone.It's worth noting that Bootkitty is signed by a self-signed certificate, and therefore cannot be executed on systems with UEFI Secure Boot enabled unless an attacker-controlled certificate has been already installed.Regardless of the UEFI Secure Boot status, the bootkit is mainly engineered to boot the Linux kernel and patch, in memory, the function's response for integrity verification before GNU GRand Unified Bootloader (GRUB) is executed.Specifically, it proceeds to hook two functions from the UEFI authentication protocols if Secure Boot is enabled in such a way that UEFI integrity checks are bypassed. Subsequently, it also patches three different functions in the legitimate GRUB boot loader to sidestep other integrity verifications.The Slovakian cybersecurity company said its investigation into the bootkit also led to the discovery of a likely related unsigned kernel module that's capable of deploying an ELF binary dubbed BCDropper that loads another as-yet-unknown kernel module after a system start.The kernel module, also featuring BlackCat as the author's name, implements other rootkit-related functionalities like hiding files, processes, and opening ports. There is no evidence to suggest a connection to the ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware group at this stage."Whether a proof-of-concept or not, Bootkitty marks an interesting move forward in the UEFI threat landscape, breaking the belief about modern UEFI bootkits being Windows-exclusive threats," the researchers said, adding "it emphasizes the necessity of being prepared for potential future threats."Found this article interesting? WWW.INFORMATIONWEEK.COMThreat Actors Put $1 Trillion Shopping Season in Their SightsRansomware remains a lucrative strategy for threat actors, but extortion that targets retail during the holiday season could be quite lucrative for ransomware groups.Retail can be a juicy target for cyberattacks year-round, and that risk -- for retailers, their supply chain, and their consumers -- is amplified during the holidays. This year, online and in-store retail sales in the US could add up to more than $1 trillion, according to research and advisory company Forrester. And where that much money is flowing, cyber threat actors are always looking for their slice of the pie.Nearly 12,000 people reported cybersecurity scams to the FBIs Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) during last years holiday season. Those scams resulted in more than $73 million in losses, according to the Cybersecurity and infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). The average cost of a data breach in the retail space is $3.48 million, according to IBMs Cost of a Data Breach Report 2024.What are some of the top threats facing the retail industry? How can enterprise leaders in this sector protect their organizations and their consumers?Retail RisksThe retail industry is no stranger to large-scale data breaches and the need to respond fast is critical this time of year. You could imagine a bad actor coming in and trying to take over retailer systems with the expectation that the retailer may want to pay very quickly to handle the ransomware attack to get their systems back online so they don't lose out, says Sean McNee, vice president of research and data at DomainTools, an internet intelligence company.Related:Financially motivated threat actors can unearth and exfiltrate a trove of valuable personal information when they successfully breach a retailer or one of its vendors.The complex design of ecommerce platforms, featuring dynamic websites and applications, increases the risk of information leaks due to poorly secured APIs, mismanaged user input, and inadequate data management practices, Shobhit Gautam, staff solutions architect at security platform HackerOne, tells InformationWeek in an email interview.Data stolen from retailers is a valuable tool for fraudsters. Phishing and smishing are tried and true tactics that target consumers. Threat actors posing as legitimate retailers or delivery services, for example, will text consumers requesting personal information that enables theft.Brand impersonation campaigns can also lure victims with promises of earning cash. Threat actors will pose as a major retailer, like Amazon or Walmart, and offer people the possibility of remote work.Related:What they're doing is stringing you along, making you think you have a job so you can earn some extra cash for the holiday season. Instead, they're just taking your money and running, says McNee.Web skimming attacks are another common tactic. Magecart is an umbrella term for various cybercriminal groups specializing in web skimming attacks. These groups inject malicious JavaScript code into ecommerce websites to steal payment card information during checkout, Gautam explains.GenAI adds another dimension to the onslaught of attacks faced by retail and other industries. The technology can make phishing lures and sites much more convincing. Threat actors can also use AI in brute force attacks.AI can leverage botnets to carry out brute force attacks on gift card websites that can test thousands of card numbers and pin combinations per minute. This allows threat actors to exploit gift card balances and deplete account funds, says Gautam.Successful attacks in the retail space can result in consumer fraud, downtime for stores, lost revenue, and lasting brand damage.Threat ActorsWhile GenAI empowers more threat actors with low technical skills, there are a number of larger groups known for targeting retail. For example, LockBit and Play are two ransomware gangs known for attacking the retail sector, according to cybersecurity company Trustwave.Related:While law enforcement disrupted LockBit earlier this year, the group quickly reemerged. LockBit may be trying to target the retail sector this season try to make some quick cash, says McNee.Some threat groups out of China are angling for Black Friday shoppers, leveraging phishing to their advantage. Threat intelligence company EclecticIQ highlighted a campaign run by SilkSpecter, for example.While financial motivation is a major factor, other threat actors could target the retail space simply to gain attention. McNee points to current geopolitical tensions and the possibility of politically motivated cyber actors targeting retail to amplify their message. Given the geopolitical landscape that we live in now and have moved across for the last year or two, it would not surprise me to see some sort of attempt happen this holiday season, he says.Retail ResponseWith billions of dollars of revenue and consumer trust hanging in the balance, how can retail organizations navigate a season of busy shoppers and busy threat actors?While holiday shopping may mean cyber threats are ramped up, the foundation for defense is the same. I can't say there's some silver bullet this time of year to preventing things. Compliance and security are a 365 days a year thing, says Brent Johnson, CISO of Bluefin, a payment and data security solutions company.Johnson notes the shift some retailers are making to end-to-end encrypted and tokenized payments.Make sure merchants [are] aware these products exist, he urges. That way they're not really targets of fraud or targets of breaches because they just don't have the data anymore.Retailers have the responsibility to protect their consumers data and to keep them informed about the risks they face from threat actors.Retailers could spend some time reviewing social media platforms to see if people are complaining about fraudulent messaging or bad actors pretending to be related to [their] brand, says McNee. Retailers can work to educate their consumers on ways to recognize those impersonation and fraud attempts.Even retail organizations with strong cybersecurity defenses can still fall prey to persistent threat actors.
