The 1970 World Expo in Osaka, Japan had the theme of "Progress and Harmony for Mankind," and drew record numbers. Some 64 million people from 77 countries attended.One of the more unusual objects on display was this Sanyo Ultrasonic Bath. The demonstration model would climb into the six-foot-tall machine via ladder, then enter the chamber, with their head sticking out of the top. They'd set the water temperature, then the machine would start spraying them with jets of warm water, like the pre-wash cycle at a car wash. After five minutes of that, the machine would then fill the chamber with hot water for a three-minute ultrasonic bath. This was followed by a two-minute hot rinse cycle. Next, the chamber would drain and the user was blasted with warm air to dry off. They were additionally exposed to both infrared and ultraviolet light to kill germs. All in all, it was a 15-minute cycle. Today the prototype is stored in the Panasonic Museum. (The company acquired Sanyo in 2009.) Unsurprisingly this never made production. However, it has inspired Japan's Science Group, who we wrote about here, to bring back the concept for 2025, when Osaka will again host a World Expo. Science Group's prototype, shown below, is intended to have applications in the healthcare sector.

The conventional way to clean greasy dishes is by applying a surfactant, like dishwashing soap. The surfactant's paradoxical combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic moleculesthe former is attracted to water, the latter repelled by itessentially separate the grease from the surface of the dish, allowing us to rinse or scrub it off.This invention here, however, can clean grease from dishes without soap or surfactants. Japanese manufacturer Science Group specializes in "fine bubble technology." They've harnessed their technology into a sink faucet, the Mirable Kitchen, that produces a stream of water loaded with tiny bubbles that can do the job of a surfactant. "More than 16 million ultra-fine bubbles absorb grease and grime and wash it away," the company writes. "They also have a high penetration power into the skin, keeping your hands moisturized."Here's a demo where they rinse a glass that looks to have held a Bloody Mary:I believe they've chosen the vessel purposefully; the shape of the base, with its undercut, would be inconvenient to scrub out mechanically. The bubble method does indeed look more convenient, not to mention the soap savings. You can see how their technology could generate significant cost savings in, say, a commercial kitchen. Fascinatingly, the technology has its roots in an ugly aspect of schoolyard society: Bullying. Twenty years ago, engineer Yasuaki Aoyama's elementary-school-aged daughter had a problem. Taking baths and showers caused rashes across her skin, which led to her being bullied at school. Doctors and hospitals could not find the problem; it was as if water itself caused his daughter's skin to become inflamed.Aoyama researched scientific literature and learned that a portion of the population has a skin reaction to chlorine in tap water. He subsequently invented a showerhead that could be loaded with chlorine-dissolving chemicals. This improved his daughter's condition.However, it still required using chemicals. Pushing further, Aoyama learned that industrial facilities used ultrasonic waves in water to produce small bubbles, and that this was used to clean microchips and electronic components.Aoyama spent several years wrangling the technology into a showerhead which could produce bubbles just 3 micrometers in diameter. This produced a stream of water that could wash both dirt and chlorine out of human pores. Today these showerheads, produced by Aoyama's Science Group company, are used by Japanese hospitals and prized for their ability to thoroughly clean.As for the kitchen faucet applications: The company claims that the bubble-infused water, when used for cooking, actually improves flavor."It has the potential to make not only dishwashing but also cooking itself more delicious and enjoyable. In rice cooking experiments, it was found that ultra-fine bubble water cooked rice with a glossy white color and plumpness that was more delicious than rice cooked with regular tap water. Ultra-fine bubble water is thought to have high penetration power, and we are currently conducting experiments to see if there is a difference in the speed of extraction and penetration, especially in the initial stages. Our research team will continue to focus on various possibilities together with science and conduct research."

Saudi Arabia has been unveiling quite a few impressive constructions and structures recently, and they dont seem to be slowing down. They recently announced another project a massive and impressive stadium that is supposed to be the worlds largest once constructed. It is designed to mimic a seed germinating in the desert. Populous unveiled the plans for the stadium called the King Salman Stadium and Masterplan. It will be located in Riyadh, near a big park area that is under construction at the moment.Designer: PopulousThe stadium will include a circular building consisting of segmented sections with green walls and green roof spaces. The roof will also include walking paths. It will be able to seat over 92,00o, making it the largest stadium in Saudi Arabia and one of the largest in the world. It will contain the main seating, a royal box, hospitality skyboxes, and lounges.It will also hold 2,200 VIP seats and 300 VVIP seats. It will be integrated with internal screens, climbing walls, gardens, and an aquatics center with an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and a small athletic stadium. The stadium will also include a running track. The structure is heavily inspired by Saudi Arabias natural landscapes, and it will resemble seeds emerging from the Earth, thereby showcasing the countrys initiative to encourage sports participation.Inspiration for the design is drawn from Saudi Arabias mesmerizing natural landscape, with the symbolic concept of each venue within the masterplan representing a seed that germinates, cracks the earth, and emerges as a dynamic yet seemingly natural intervention, said Populous.
