When No Candidate Won the 1824 Presidential Election, the House of Representatives Was Given the Rare Task of Deciding the Victorwww.smithsonianmag.comA political cartoon depicting a footrace for the position of president in the 1824 election Public domain via Wikimedia CommonsThe Era of Good Feelings came to a grinding halt with the presidential election of 1824, giving the United States House of Representatives an unprecedented task after electors met on December 1 of that year. For the first and last time ever, the House turned to the 12th Amendment to settle a stalemate in that years presidential electionand set the stage for a new era of political vitriol. The nations period of domestic bliss was practically coterminous with the presidency of James Monroe, a Democratic-Republican whose landslide victory in 1816 accelerated the Federalist Partys collapse. After the ruins of the Federalist Party failed to nominate a single candidate, Monroe won re-election effectively unopposed in the 1820 election. But the disappearance of partisan rancor didnt bring about political harmony, as historian Lynn Hudson Parsons wrote in The Birth of Modern Politics.Instead, the 1824 campaign began the moment Monroe was re-elected. Now, Democratic-Republican infighting replaced former animosity with Federalists. To make matters worse, three of Monroes five leading opponents were members of his cabinet.William H. Crawford was treasury secretary and a Georgian who wanted to return to a more strictly traditional vision of Thomas Jeffersons Democratic-Republican Party. A planter who enslaved 45 people, Crawford was in favor of states rights, slavery and a limited federal government. His strongest support, unsurprisingly, rested in the South.Election of 1824: When the House ChoseWatch on Secretary of State John Quincy Adams was once a Federalist like his father, second president John Adams. But after switching parties and leading Monroes anti-British and isolationist foreign policy agenda, Adams saw his popularity rise, especially in his native New England. Finally, John C. Calhoun of South Carolina served as Monroes secretary of war and was a major proponent of nationalistic westward expansion. But he largely overlapped with Crawfords staunchly pro-slavery views. He dropped out early in the race after failing to win his home states endorsement and pursued the vice presidency instead. The other two 1824 candidates were Henry Clay, a Kentuckian who served as speaker of the House, and Andrew Jackson, a popular general from Tennessee who defeated the British in the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 and billed himself as a true political outsider. With four major candidates vying for the presidency, no one won a majority of electoral votes.Jackson had run partially to spite Crawford and Clay, who opposed his rogue invasion of Spanish Florida in 1818, and siphoned their support in the South and West. He ended up with the most electoral votes (99) and popular votes (152,901, or 42.5 percent), but neither was enough. Crawford and Clay won 41 and 37 electoral votes, respectively, and with his base of support in the northeast, Adams won 84. A restored daguerreotype of John Quincy Adams, circa 1843 to 1848 Public domain via Wikimedia CommonsBased on the protocol outlined in the 12th Amendment, the top three candidatesJackson, Adams and Crawfordwere put before the House of Representatives. Each states delegation was allotted one vote. Of the 24 states, a candidate needed 13 to win.Now came the round of lobbying congressmen, when Adams came into his own, wrote historian Daniel Walker Howe in What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848.Compared with Jackson, an anti-establishment candidate who naturally struggled to court support in Washington, and Crawford, who was incapacitated after a stroke, Adams understood well this kind of politics, based on an old-boy network and implicit understandings, Howe argued.Although Clay was kept out of the running, he shifted his support to Adams. Clays three votes, along with the seven states Adams won in the Electoral College and three more he secured through backroom politicking, were enough to win Adams the presidency on the first ballot before the House on February 9, 1825.The Era of Good Feelings was now officially over. An episode of undemocratic politics and a corrupt bargain had killed it, and soon enough new parties would form from the rubble of the Democratic-Republican alliance.Adams appointed Clay secretary of state, and their coalition became the National Republicans, later the Whigs.Jacksons contingent, now even more deeply upset with the political establishment and Adams corrupt bargain came to be known as the Democrats.Their desire for retribution would turn the next election cycle into one of the most vitriolic in American historyclosing the Era of Good Feelings for good.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.0 Comments ·0 Shares ·103 Views

The end of AI scaling may not be nigh: Heres whats nextventurebeat.comJoin our daily and weekly newsletters for the latest updates and exclusive content on industry-leading AI coverage. Learn MoreAs AI systems achieve superhuman performance in increasingly complex tasks, the industry is grappling with whether bigger models are even possible or if innovation must take a different path. The general approach to large language model (LLM) development has been that bigger is better, and that performance scales with more data and more computing power. However, recent media discussions have focused on how LLMs are approaching their limits. Is AI hitting a wall? The Verge questioned, while Reuters reported that OpenAI and others seek new path to smarter AI as current methods hit limitations. The concern is that scaling, which has driven advances for years, may not extend to the next generation of models. Reporting suggests that the development of frontier models like GPT-5, which push the current limits of AI, may face challenges due to diminishing performance gains during pre-training. The Information reported on these challenges at OpenAI and Bloomberg covered similar news at Google and Anthropic. This issue has led to concerns that these systems may be subject to the law of diminishing returns where each added unit of input yields progressively smaller gains. As LLMs grow larger, the costs of getting high-quality training data and scaling infrastructure increase exponentially, reducing the returns on performance improvement in new models. Compounding this challenge is the limited availability of high-quality new data, as much of the accessible information has already been incorporated into existing training datasets. This does not mean the end of performance gains for AI. It simply means that to sustain progress, further engineering is needed through innovation in model architecture, optimization techniques and data use.Learning from Moores LawA similar pattern of diminishing returns appeared in the semiconductor industry. For decades, the industry had benefited from Moores Law, which predicted that the number of transistors would double every 18 to 24 months, driving dramatic performance improvements through smaller and more efficient designs. This too eventually hit diminishing returns, beginning somewhere between 2005 and 2007due to Dennard Scaling the principle that shrinking transistors also reduces power consumption having hit its limits which fueled predictions of the death of Moores Law.I had a close up view of this issue when I worked with AMD from 2012-2022. This problem did not mean that semiconductors and by extension computer processors stopped achieving performance improvements from one generation to the next. It did mean that improvements came more from chiplet designs, high-bandwidth memory, optical switches, more cache memory and accelerated computing architecture rather than the scaling down of transistors.New paths to progressSimilar phenomena are already being observed with current LLMs. Multimodal AI models like GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 and Gemini 1.5 have proven the power of integrating text and image understanding, enabling advancements in complex tasks like video analysis and contextual image captioning. More tuning of algorithms for both training and inference will lead to further performance gains. Agent technologies, which enable LLMs to perform tasks autonomously and coordinate seamlessly with other systems, will soon significantly expand their practical applications.Future model breakthroughs might arise from one or more hybrid AI architecture designs combining symbolic reasoning with neural networks. Already, the o1 reasoning model from OpenAI shows the potential for model integration and performance extension. While only now emerging from its early stage of development, quantum computing holds promise for accelerating AI training and inference by addressing current computational bottlenecks. The perceived scaling wall is unlikely to end future gains, as the AI research community has consistently proven its ingenuity in overcoming challenges and unlocking new capabilities and performance advances. In fact, not everyone agrees that there even is a scaling wall. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was succinct in his views: There is no wall.Source: X https://x.com/sama/status/1856941766915641580Speaking on theDiary of a CEOpodcast, ex-Google CEO and co-author of Genesis Eric Schmidt essentially agreed with Altman, saying he does not believe there is a scaling wall at least there wont be one over the next five years. In five years, youll have two or three more turns of the crank of these LLMs. Each one of these cranks looks like its a factor of two, factor of three, factor of four of capability, so lets just say turning the crank on all these systems will get 50 times or 100 times more powerful, he said. Leading AI innovators are still optimistic about the pace of progress, as well as the potential for new methodologies. This optimism is evident in a recent conversation on Lennys Podcast with OpenAIs CPO Kevin Weil and Anthropic CPO Mike Krieger. In this discussion, Krieger described that what OpenAI and Anthropic are working on today feels like magic, but acknowledged that in just 12 months, well look back and say, can you believe we used that garbage? Thats how fast [AI development] is moving. Its true it does feel like magic, as I recently experienced when using OpenAIs Advanced Voice Mode. Speaking with Juniper felt entirely natural and seamless, showcasing how AI is evolving to understand and respond with emotion and nuance in real-time conversations.Krieger also discusses the recent o1 model, referring to this as a new way to scale intelligence, and we feel like were just at the very beginning. He added: The models are going to get smarter at an accelerating rate. These expected advancements suggest that while traditional scaling approaches may or may not face diminishing returns in the near-term, the AI field is poised for continued breakthroughs through new methodologies and creative engineering.Does scaling even matter? While scaling challenges dominate much of the current discourse around LLMs, recent studies suggest that current models are already capable of extraordinary results, raising a provocative question of whether more scaling even matters.A recent study forecasted that ChatGPT would help doctors make diagnoses when presented with complicated patient cases. Conducted with an early version of GPT-4, the study compared ChatGPTs diagnostic capabilities against those of doctors with and without AI help. A surprising outcome revealed that ChatGPT alone substantially outperformed both groups, including doctors using AI aid. There are several reasons for this, from doctors lack of understanding of how to best use the bot to their belief that their knowledge, experience and intuition were inherently superior. This is not the first study that shows bots achieving superior results compared to professionals. VentureBeat reported on a study earlier this year which showed that LLMs can conduct financial statement analysis with accuracy rivaling and even surpassing that of professional analysts. Also using GPT-4, another goal was to predict future earnings growth. GPT-4 achieved 60% accuracy in predicting the direction of future earnings, notably higher than the 53 to 57% range of human analyst forecasts.Notably, both these examples are based on models that are already out of date. These outcomes underscore that even without new scaling breakthroughs, existing LLMs are already capable of outperforming experts in complex tasks, challenging assumptions about the necessity of further scaling to achieve impactful results.Scaling, skilling or bothThese examples show that current LLMs are already highly capable, but scaling alone may not be the sole path forward for future innovation. But with more scaling possible and other emerging techniques promising to improve performance, Schmidts optimism reflects the rapid pace of AI advancement, suggesting that in just five years, models could evolve into polymaths, seamlessly answering complex questions across multiple fields.Whether through scaling, skilling or entirely new methodologies, the next frontier of AI promises to transform not just the technology itself, but its role in our lives. The challenge ahead is ensuring that progress remains responsible, equitable and impactful for everyone.Gary Grossman is EVP of technology practice at Edelman and global lead of the Edelman AI Center of Excellence.DataDecisionMakersWelcome to the VentureBeat community!DataDecisionMakers is where experts, including the technical people doing data work, can share data-related insights and innovation. If you want to read about cutting-edge ideas and up-to-date information, best practices, and the future of data and data tech, join us at DataDecisionMakers. You might even considercontributing an articleof your own!Read More From DataDecisionMakers0 Comments ·0 Shares ·68 Views

I cant get over how good a deal the Pixel 8A is for $399www.theverge.comFor someone who wants to spend the absolute least on a phone and not have to think about buying another one for a good long while, Ill always recommend Googles A-series Pixel phone. Thats doubly true now with the Pixel 8A on a $100 discount for Black Friday-ish Cyber Shopping Holiday or whatever it is were currently experiencing. The 8A is a solid value at its full $499 price, and cut down to $399 its a ridiculously good deal.Heres the kicker: Google is promising to update the Pixel 8A with OS version upgrades and security releases through May 2031. That means you can expect it to run Android 21. If you bought the 8A now for $400 and owned it for six years, that works out to $66 per year. Youd have to use a $1000 flagship phone for 15 years to get the same ROI. See? Youre practically making money with the Pixel 8A.Google Pixel 8A (128GB)$399$49920% off$399$399$49920% offGoogles latest midranger touts a whopping seven years of software support and a number of small upgrades, including Googles speedy Tensor G3 processor, a 120Hz display, and plenty of new AI features. Read our review.More importantly, the 8A is the kind of phone I recommend to friends and family who dont care about fancy features and dont want to be bothered with buying a new one every few years. Seriously: my mom has a 7A and my dad has the 8A. RelatedA $400 phone is also much more feasible to buy out-of-pocket than a flagship phone, Pixel or otherwise. If you dont want to be beholden to the terms of a wireless carriers promotion in exchange for a free phone, the Pixel 8A is a good deal no strings attached.0 Comments ·0 Shares ·95 Views

The Best Cyber Monday Deals of 2024: Meta Quest, PS5, LEGOs, Switch, and Applewww.ign.comCyber Monday 2024 lands on December 2, but that's literally just half the story. Much like with Black Friday, Cyber Monday deals actually get released in two waves. The first wave happens today, Sunday, and primarily involves deals from brick & mortar retailers like Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and Gamestop. The second wave happens on Monday and involves deals from online only retailers like Amazon, Alienware, HP, Lenovo, Newegg, and more.In terms of deal quality, there are better-than-expected discounts on gaming consoles like the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Meta Quest , and Steam Deck, several Apple iPads, AirPods, and Apple Watches, heavily discounted video games, powerful gaming PCs and laptops, and more. Many of the same deals we saw on Black Friday have returned for Cyber Monday, including deals that were previously sold out or expired. I am also seeing a number of new deals that never happened on Black Friday. Check out the full list below.TL;DR - Best Cyber Monday DealsMeta Quest 3S + $100 Amazon Credit - $299PS5 Cobalt Star Disc Bundle - $424.99PS5 Cobalt Star Digital Bundle - $374.99Hulu for $0.99/mo for 12 MonthsApple AirPods Pro - $154Bose QuietComfort - $161.49 code: EXTRAFIVEFitRX Adjustable Dumbbells - $140Xbox Controllers for $35 code: BFCMXBOXThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - $30Star Wars Outlaws - $39.9965" LG Evo C4 OLED TV - $1272.44Azul Board Game - $13.33Deal Alert: Meta Quest 3SThe Best Cyber Monday VR Headset DealIf you've wanted to give VR gaming a try but the cost of entry has kept you at bay, then you don't want to miss out on the one Meta Quest deal for Cyber Monday. The Meta Quest 3S was indisputably the best value out there in the world of VR gaming even at its retail price. However, for Cyber Monday, Amazon decided to turn it up a notch by including a bonus $100 Amazon digital credit. The Meta Quest was our hottest seller on Black Friday (selling even more than the PlayStation and Switch consoles) and the bonus at the time was a $75 gift card or digital credit, depending on where you got it. This is a better deal and I expect it to blow up.To sweeten the pot even more, every Quest 3S purchase this month comes with the Batman: Arkham Shadow VR game and a three-month trial of Meta Quest+. In IGN's 8/10 review, Dan Stapleton wrote that "Batman: Arkham Shadow makes most of the Arkham series' defining gameplay work respectably well in VR, and its mystery story pays off."Deal Alert: $35 Xbox ControllersThe Best Price on Xbox ControllersLenovo just pushed out the best Xbox controller deal I've seen for both Cyber Monday and Black Friday. The Xbox wireless controller in Robot White or Electric Volt is on sale for $34.99. Carbon Black (with USB cable), Shock Blue, Pulse Red, and Deep Pink are on sale for $39.99. For any of these options, make sure you apply coupon code "BFCMXBOX" in your shopping cart. These controllers are compatible with Xbox Series X and S consoles as well as your PC.Deal Alert: Apple AirPods ProThe best Cyber Monday AirPods deal is still available, although it looks to be selling out quickly. The Apple AirPods Pro wireless noise-canceling earbuds dropped to $154 during the leadup to Black Friday, and although most retailers have bumpted the price back up to $170, a few - namely Amazon and Walmart - still have it discounted for Cyber Monday. This discount brings the price down to the same level as the Apple AirPods 4 with noise cancellation. Between the two, the AirPods Pro is still Apple's best earbuds because it offers better sound quality and better noise cancellation.Deal Alert: iBuyPower RTX 4070 Gaming PC for $1199This might very well be the best gaming PC deal of Cyber Monday. Walmart is offering this iBuyPower Y40 gaming PC with AMD Ryzen 7 7700 CPU and the excellent RTX 4070 GPU for only $1199. The RTX 4070 Super is one of the best graphics cards for most people; it's affordably priced and yet it's powerful enough to run games at up to 4K (although 1440p is its sweet spot). I personally gamed on a 4K monitor with a RTX 3080 GPU (less powerful than the RTX 4070 Super) before I upgraded. The system is contained in a nice looking Hyte Y40 midtower chassis (iBuyPower and Hyte are sister brands). The Best PlayStation DealsSony released its entire set of Cyber Monday PlayStation deals on November 21 and most major retailers have followed suit. These deals have an official end date of December 2 (Cyber Monday). The best deals are on the consoles: The PS5 Slim Disc Edition has dropped to $424.99 (originally $500) and the PS5 Slim Digital Edition has dropped to $374.99 (originally $450). I would choose the Disc Edition because it's only $50 more and then I have the option to buy (and later sell or trade) physical disc media. But if you want to save some money and go the Digital Edition route, I would suggest getting the NBA 2K25 bundle (if you can catch it in-stock), which also includes a game. Although the Fortnite Cobalt Star bundle has a fancy-looking box, no actual game is included.More PlayStation Cyber Monday DealsBest Video Game Deals for PS5 and XboxStar Wars: Outlaws was released only three months ago and it's already 33% off for Cyber Monday. Maybe Ubisoft is trying to boost sales after a lackluster launch, but that means you get to enjoy a AAA title at a great discount. IGN's Tristan Ogilvie gave it a 7/10 review, which is still good, but I've beaten the game and immensely enjoyed it, so I would have given it an 8. It definitely has an "Assassin's Creed game in a Star Wars skin" vibe, and there's nothing wrong with that.More Cyber Monday Video Game Deals for PS5/XboxDeal Alert: 65" LG Evo C4 OLED TVThe Best TV for PlayStationI've been waiting for another good OLED TV deal to pop up for Cyber Monday ever since the previous one expired, and Walmart has finally delivered. Right now you can pick up a current 2024 model 65" LG Evo C4 4K OLED Smart TV for only $1,272.44. To get this price you will need to follow two simple steps:You'll need to sign into your Walmart account to see this deal (signing up is free)Add the 65" LG Evo C4 4K OLED TV to your cartClip the $224.55 coupon in your shopping cart to bring it down to $1,272.44The LG Evo C4 OLED TV has won top spots in several of our buying guides, including best 4K TV, best TV for gaming, and best TV for the PlayStation 5. This is an especially good choice if you picked up the new PS5 Pro, since the updated hardware will be able to run more games at a consistent 4K @ 120fps.Deal Alert: Get Hulu for $0.99/Month for an Entire YearThe Best Cyber Monday Streaming DealThis Cyber Monday, you can sign up for Hulu for just $0.99/month for an entire year down from $9.99/month, and at 90% off that's hard to beat. Similarly, the Disney+ bundle is being offered at $2.99/month for a year, down from $10.99/month, making these some of the best Black Friday streaming deals available. Don't miss out.Hulu stands out as one of the top streaming platforms today, yet its often underrated. With critically acclaimed movies like Anatomy of a Fall and Talk to Me, and standout, Emmy-winning TV series such as Shogun, Abbott Elementary, The Bear, and Only Murders in the Building, theres always something exceptional to watch.Deal Alert: Azul Board GameThe Best Board Game Under $15You can pick up a copy of Azul for only $13.33 for Cyber Monday. Many board games are about mystery or war, but Azul is totally different. Players in Azul compete to design the most beautiful tiled mosaics they can. In our Azul review, Matt Thrower writes, "Between its beautiful presentation, simplicity and depth theres little doubt that Azul has earned its place as a modern classic. While the tinkering with its formula undertaken by its sequels has created more challenging games, none has captured the fine blend of accessibility and interactivity that makes it special."The Best Nintendo Switch DealsConsoles are going in and out of stockThe Best Video Game Deals for SwitchWalmart is the only retailer offering Tears of the Kingdom for $30. IGN gave it a 10/10 "Masterpiece" rating and I would have to agree. Tom Marks wrote that "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an unfathomable follow-up, expanding a world that already felt full beyond expectation and raising the bar ever higher into the clouds." I wouldn't wait too long to get this deal; Walmart is already sold out of physical copies.More Cyber Monday Video Game Deals for SwitchDeal Alert: FitRX Adjustable DumbbellsThe Least Expensive Adjustable dumbellsBowflex isn't the only option when it comes to adjustable dumbbell sets, especially on Cyber Monday. FitRX is another popular brand at a much, much lower price point. As part of the Walmart Cyber Monday Sale, you can pick up a pair of FitRx Adjustable Dumbbells for only $139.97. A set of Bowflex 551 adjustable dumbbells costs three times more. Walmart even offers free shipping, which is great since the package will weigh in at well over 100 pounds. The Best Apple Deals: AirPods, iPad, Apple WatchThere Apple iPad 10th gen for $259.99 is the iPad I would recommend to most people. It offers snappy performance and an intuitive iOS interface at an affordable price. Tenth gen improvements over its predecessor include a larger 10.9" screen and a faster A14 Bionic chip, Magic Folio keyboard support so you can convert it into a mini laptop (making it one of the best iPads for students), a USB Type-C port, better camera, and updated Wi-Fi 6 protocol. This price was $10 less on Black Friday, but I don't know if that deal will come back for Cyber Monday. For anyone on a budget, this is the Apple Watch to get. The second generation Apple Watch SE starts at just $149 only at Amazon and Walmart and is the best price I've ever seen for a brand-new Apple Watch with a warranty. Despite the affordable price tag, you actually don't lose out on much functionality if you opt for an Apple Watch SE. It's powered by the same S8 processor found in the Apple Watch Series 8 and the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra. It also features a bright and sharp OLED Retina display, IPX7 water resistance, fall detection, sleep tracking, Apple Pay, and nearly all the fitness tracking functionality including heart rate monitoring.More Apple Cyber Monday DealsDeal Alert: Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer Smart GlassesUp to 50% Off These Smart GlassesThere's a very intriguing if a bit controversial deal going on that you might want to check out for yourself. Both Amazon and Target are offering a 20% discount off the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer Smart Glasses, with prices starting at $239.20. That's the same deal you'll find at other retailers, however Amazon and Target are throwing in additional freebies: either $90 in Amazon digital credit or a $90 Target gift card. The Meta Wayfarer glasses are an influencer's dream, and that's exactly what they're designed for: social media. They're surprisingly slim and lightweight for glasses equipped with an integrated 12MP video camera and speaker. You can use them to take quick snapshots or up to 60 second videos that you can then upload to your social media of choice. You can even livestream 30 second videos in 720p.3 Months of Audible Premium Plus for $0.99 per MonthIncludes One-Time $20 Audible CreditSee deal in the UK - 0.99/month for three months (was 7.99)From now until December 31, non-current Audible subscribers are eligible for three months of Audible Premium Plus for $0.99 per month and a bonus one-time $20 Audible credit. Premium Plus is Audible's best plan and three months would normally cost you about $44.95. You also get a free audiobook of your choice each month that you get to keep indefinitely.Audible is a subscription service that gives you access to hundreds of thousands of the best audiobooks without ever having to purchase them. Premium Plus is Audible's highest tier plan and it gives you access to a whopping 500,000 audiobooks. These include all-time classics like Frank Herbert's Dune, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire), The Witcher, The Sandman Series, and The Lord of the Rings.Where Are the Xbox Deals?Xbox gamers might be wondering why I haven't listed Xbox consoles. Unfortunately, Microsoft seems to have taken a step back and decided not to host any outstanding console deals so far for Black Friday. All of the consoles are marked down by $50, but these deals aren't exceptional. If you're already an Xbox owner, however, and are looking for discounts on peripherals, there are two great deals to consider. The WD Black C50 Storage Expansion Card is down to $99.99 from $150. Also, Xbox wireless controllers are down to as low as $39.99. Even better, the limited edition Ghost Cipher and Sky Cipher controllers are both on sale for just $45 each. The Best Gaming PC DealsThis the currently the best Cyber Monday deal at Lenovo. This Legion Tower 7i RTX 4080 Super gaming PC is currently available for under $2000 with coupon code "LEGIONC5SALE24". The 4080 Super is a second generation card that supersedes the RTX 4080. It's Nvidia's second most powerful card and a superior GPU to AMD's Radeon RX 7900 RTX if you factor in DLSS and ray tracing performance. In our RTX 4080 Super review, Jacqueline Thomas writes, "If you're in the market for a 4K graphics card around $1,000, it's hard to think of any GPU that's a better purchase right now. This is the RTX 4080 that should have launched in 2022."More Cyber Monday Gaming PC DealsThe Best Gaming Laptop DealsThe Walmart Cyber Monday Sale brings with it this excellent gaming laptop deal. Walmart is offering a Lenovo LOQ RTX 4070 gaming laptop for only $879.99. Yes, you read that right. The LOQ is Lenovo's lineup of budget-oriented gaming laptops. This system features a 15" 1080p display, a low-voltage AMD Ryzen 7 7435HS CPU, GeForce RTX 4070 GPU, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. The RTX 4070 GPU is a fully powered (115W TGP) model, not a throttled one like on some other budget laptops. Despite its low cost, this laptop will perform almost as well as the best RTX 4070 gaming laptops. You should be able to play any game comfortably on the 1080p display.More Cyber Monday Gaming Laptop DealsThe Best Gaming Monitor DealsPerhaps the best Cyber Monday deal on a high-end gaming monitor has arrived. Amazon is offering the massive 57" Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 Dual 4K UHD gaming monitor at the exclusive price of $1,479.99. That's $120 less than everyone else's gaming monitor Black Friday deal and nearly 50% off the retail price. Keep in mind that there is no other monitor to compare it with. If you're looking for the biggest and sharpest super ultra-wide gaming monitor on the planet, this would be it right here. Just make sure that your GPU is up to snuff.Alienware just sweetened the deal on its best gaming monitor for Cyber Monday. The 32" Alienware AW3225QF 32" 4K QD OLED gaming monitor is down to $899.99. But that's not all. Alienware is also including a bonus $100 Dell promotional e-gift card. The Alienware AW3225QF was released earlier this year and is actually Dell's one and only monitor that combines a 4K resolution with an OLED panel.More Cyber Monday Gaming Monitor DealsThe Best TV DealsThe entry-level Hisense R6-series 4K smart TV offers a limited set of features in exchange for a rock bottom price. Don't expect this TV to be decked out with the latest cutting-edge technology, however what you'll get is a native 4K TV that works out of the box and still offers solid image quality that will satisfy most TV watchers. It has built-in speakers and Roku smart TV baked in. Roku is actually our favorite streaming hub because of its intuitive interface.More Cyber Monday TV DealsThe Best Gaming Handheld PC DealsBest Buy is still the only retailer to drop the price on the Asus ROG Ally X so far for Black Friday or Cyber Monday. In our Asus ROG Ally X review, gaming guru Jacqueline Thomas wrote that "the Asus ROG Ally X is simply the best handheld gaming PC on the market right now. With more and faster memory and double the battery as the original Ally, the Ally X will run any modern game without dying in an hour and a half."More Cyber Monday Gaming DealsThe Best Headphone DealsThese JLabs JBuds Lux are an incredible value. First of all, they feature both wireless connectivity and noise cancellation for under $30. Better yet, unlike virtually all other headphones at this price point, they're actually very good! SoundGuys recently reviewed the JLabs JBuds Lux and gave it an absolutely glowing review, mentioning that they were one of the best headphones under $100. SoundGuys considered them an extremely good value at their retail price of $79. Imagine their opinion at the current $29 price point.More Cyber Monday Headphone DealsThe Best Board Game DealsAn excellent board game worth mentioning is Splendor, which is down to $13.99 after you clip the coupon. Splendor is a 2014 release that's still considered one of the best board games for all experience levels, and it's priced lower than most other board games targeted towards the same audience. There's plenty of strategy here, but at the same time, the rules aren't daunting and the average playtime is a very reasonable 30 minutes. This fast game is easy enough for kids to learn but satisfying for players of all ages, making it a good board game for families.More Cyber Monday Board GamesDeal Alert: Microsoft Xbox 360 Collector Building SetThe Coolest Toy for GamersOne deal you might have missed is this really awesome MEGA Microsoft Xbox 360 Collector Building Set. It's normally $150 but there's a 50% discount for Cyber Monday that drops it to only $74.99. The MEGA Microsoft Xbox 360 Collector Building Set is a buildable 3:4 scale replica of the Xbox 360 console with a brick count total of 1,342 pieces (5.5 cents per brick). The details in this build are, frankly, incredible, and include interactive elements, lighting effects, and the coolest accessories. This is such an interesting product that I wrote up a dedicated Cyber Monday article just for this deal.Deal Alert: LEGO NASA Space Shuttle DiscoveryLots of interactive elements for a display-worthy setThis popular LEGO Creator set rarely goes on sale. For Cyber Monday, LEGO Shop is offering the NASA Space Shuttle Discovery 10283 for $159.99, or a savings of 20%. You'll need to be a LEGO Insiders member, but it's free to sign up. This impressive set consists of 2,354 bricks, which averages out to about 6.7 cents per brick, and measures 22" long. As its namesake suggests, this is a replica of the Space Shuttle Discovery, with a center compartment that opens up and houses a separate Hubble telescope that can be deployed with a robot arm. Of course it also looks amazing as a display.Kitchen Appliances, Personal Care, Vacuums, and MoreiFixit might be a familiar brand name for you from all of the helpful teardown videos of various electronics that've hosted on YouTube. Well, they also sell an extremely practical and high quality toolkit that helps you do the same. Amazon is offering the iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit for electronics, smartphones, gaming consoles, PCs and laptops, and tablets for only $59.96. It normally retails for $75 and we've only seen a price drop only once this year back in May. This is one of the very best tool kits you can buy for disassembling and repairing your electronics -- including your Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck -- without spending hundreds of dollars on a commercial kit.More Random Cyber Monday DealsAmazon, Target, Walmart, and Best Buy are all one-stop shopping sites, so it makes sense that their Cyber Monday sales extend beyond gaming and tech. Here are the best deals I've seen so far on small kitchen appliances, personal care products like hair dryers and toothbrushes, vacuum cleaners, and other convenient necessities that everyone gamers included might find useful. On a personal note, although air fryers are all the rage these days, I bought my Instant Pot pressure cooker over 10 years ago and I still use it weekly. My air fryer sits in the cabinet.LEGO Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before ChristmasThe Best Cyber Monday LEGO DealThe Nightmare Before Christmas 21351 is a large diorama that's split up into three different locations. The three main set pieces are Spiral Hill (with a really great full moon backdrop), the Halloween Town Hall, and Jack Skellington's house. All of these places are chock full of adorable nods to the movie, like the walking bathtub, a chalkboard in Jack's house with his Christmas formula, and a lectern where Jack gave his speech about Christmas. There's also great use of interspersed color to break up what should be a monotonous gray and black build (the Star Wars sets should take notes). A total of eight figures are included as well: Jack Skellington, Sally, Santa Clause, Lock, Shock and Barrel minifigures, plus Zero the dog and a brick-built The Mayor figure with 2 faces.Breville the Bambino Plus Espresso Machine20% off the best entry-level espresso machineAmazon has dropped the price of the super popular and well-reviewed Breville Bambino Plus Espresso Machine to $399.95 after a 20% discount. This machine is rarely discounted, even on Black Friday or Cyber Monday. You can read the reviews online, but the Bambino Plus is well-regarded, even among the coffee snobs, as an incredible bang for your buck at retail price, especially if you like pouring yourself lattes or other milk-based coffee drinks. To get something appreciably better, you'll have to pay north of $1,000.Prefer to Shop by Retailer? It's roughly 10-15% faster than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 GPU and is more comparable to the new RTX 4070 Super. This rig is ideal for gaming at up to 1440p resolution at high framerates, although it can also run most games in 4K.Lenovo Cyber Monday DealsLenovo Legion Tower 7i i9 RTX 4080 Super Gaming PCThis the currently the best Cyber Monday deal at Lenovo. In her RTX 4070 Super review, Jacqueline Thomas wrote that "The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super is the mid-range card we should have got back when the RTX 4000 generation launched. Until the rest of the pack can catch up, between its impressive hardware specs and its DLSS 3 AI wizardry, even the $1,599 price doesnt seem unreasonable for the unrivaled frame rates that this card can crank out." There is the slimmest of slim chances that anyone will drop the price of this hot commodity before 2025.In our AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D review, Jackie Thomas wrote that "the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is extremely powerful in games, which makes it easier to recommend than other recent processors like the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K or Ryzen 9 9900X. Especially if youre building a rig with a powerful graphics card, the 9800X3D is going to be the best way to get the most performance out of whichever GPU you pair it with. Will the Deals Change for Cyber Monday? In my experience, many of the same deals we saw on Black Friday will return for Cyber Monday 2024, including deals that were sold out or expired. Retailers usually release their hottest selling items in batches so that every sale event has at least some inventory reserved. That said, I also expect plenty of new, never before seen deals. Traditionally, Black Friday was known as the "retail holiday," where the best deals were found in-store, and Cyber Monday was known as the "online holiday," where the best deals were online only. Although today the lines have blurred, it is still true that many online only retailers still consider Cyber Monday the sale event of the year instead of Black Friday.
