  • Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 3 Review
    www.ign.com
Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 3 arrives Thursday, February 13 on Netflix. This is a spoiler-free review for all five final episodes. Cobra Kai closes up shop with a final run of five episodes that made me cheer, cry and howl with (sometimes unintended) laughter. I found myself powerless against both its thrilling tournament action and its heart-tugging resolutions. This farewell run focuses a bit more on the senseis than it does on the youthful next gen, honing in on what Daniel and Johnny both need from each other and what they want to represent as karate mentors. The main kids do have some big, rousing moments, spanning both defeat and victory, but it's really the grown ups who shine here at the finish line. William Zabka, in particular, is phenomenal in a handful of heartbreaking scenes that work to key us in on just how miserable and lonely his life was following his epic All-Valley loss in 1984.And Ralph Macchio's Daniel, in turn, is able to really honor and heed Miyagi-Dos teachings and prove why its a crucial, critical cog in The Valley's karate scene. The Karate Kid, and Mr. Miyagi's belief that karate was for defense only, was kind of revolutionary at the height of 1980s America's appetite for martial-arts movies. This is what Daniel finds himself ruminating on in the aftermath of Barcelona, along with the overall need, or lack thereof, for tournament glory.Does some of Daniel's soul-searching come, once again, with a weird CGI Mr. Miyagi, plunging Cobra Kai in to the uncanny valley? Absolutely. But it's easy to forgive the de-aging weirdness when you consider where this particular vision takes Daniel emotionally. Remember, Miyagi was humble. Almost to a fault. He didn't care about titles, belts, levels, rumors, lies, or even Medals of Honor. All of his validation came from within. And this is also a big part of Cobra Kai's overall impact. What we said about Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 2The second part of Cobra Kai's final season is an exciting, action-filled romp featuring the most karate (and characters) to date. Centered on the Sekai Taikai, these five episodes are filled with failures and victories, revenge and redemption. Miyagi-Do is surrounded by enemies on all sides (and at risk of being torn apart internally) so it makes for the series' best underdog story in years. Daniel's obsession with Miyagi's past bogs some of this down, but those who know Cobra Kai know that setbacks are temporary and catharsis can be beautiful. Matt FowlerRead the complete Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 2 review.Following the accidental death of Kwon in Part 2's finale, the characters, and the show, have to regroup and figure out just how lethal the stakes will be heading into the finish. Franchise-wise, this isn't unprecedented. The movies themselves, between The Karate Kid and The Karate Kid Part II, went from high school bully antics and tournament wins to fights to the death in Okinawa. And Cobra Kai has to wrestle with this in its endgame. Right at the point when it seems like the villainous machinations of Terry Silver are going to take things into (too) dark territory, the show does a hard fix in a rather magnificent way.For the most part, every character's story gets wrapped up in fun and fitting fashion, though there are some stragglers in this final act whose best moments, you'll find, are behind them. Ultimately, Cobra Kai shifts its entire focus back to what brought it to the dance. It almost feels like, in this last stretch, the series remembers what its title is. Post-Barcelona, everything returns to its point of origin: The San Fernando Valley. The region that, between Cobra Kai and the films of Paul Thomas Anderson, feels like something out of myth. An elsewhere. Like Doctor Doom's Battleworld, but with karate teens ruling the landscape.PlayIt could feel cheap or uninspired, like when sitcoms throw a wedding on their main set. ("We could just get married in Cheers!") But The Valley is the weird, beating heart of Cobra Kai: Where Johnny needs to better himself, Daniel needs to balance himself, Tory and Robby need to find their path, and much much more. Now the world of international karate comes to them with all the villains, like Silver and the Iron Dragons, still in play. I've written before about how Cobra Kai is a fantastic blend of tones, mixing sitcom-style comedy with stark, effective drama. Sometimes characters are cartoonishly stubborn and obtuse, but that always usually leads to a brilliant bit of catharsis. These final episodes take from the same playbook, of course. Some elements play out with all the bells, whistles, and sitcom antics intact (botched proposals, baby-delivery zaniness), almost eliciting eye rolls. But others hoo, boy they zig instead of zag and I was thrown for a loop. In a great way. It all works. PlayVery few of the "bad guys" on Cobra Kai escape redemption. And if they don't get to come full circle, we at least gain insight into their tragic motivation or witness a pivotal moment that feels like a seed planted for future absolution. Now that Cobra Kai actually has a surplus of adversaries, there's room for one final act of apology and clarity. I won't give away who it is, but it's a doozy and it fuels the final two episodes in a magnificent manner. Here at the end of all-things Cobra Kai, it's phenomenal how the show's collected characters: It scooped up strays and made them lovable. It started with the main characters, but over the course of seven years, it's amassed a small army of beguiling misfits and lost souls in search of purpose. Some of them may not have had the final moments I fully wanted for them

  • How to Watch the Captain America Movies in Order
    www.ign.com
Captain America returns this week for his first standalone movie in nearly a decade. The character has been a staple in the MCU, first appearing in Marvel's Phase One and now set to star in Phase 5's Brave New World 14 years later. It'll be the first Cap movie without Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) behind the shield, as Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) carries forth the mantle passed to him at the end of Avengers: Endgame. For those who want to watch or rewatch Captain Americas full MCU saga ahead of Brave New World, weve put together this list of the heros movies (and TV series) in chronological order. How Many Captain America MCU Movies Are There? There are 8 MCU movies and one TV series in which Captain America plays a prominent role. Including non-MCU made-for-TV and animated movies, that number rises to over 20. For this list, weve only compiled movies/series relevant to the MCU.For a more in-depth, spoiler-filled breakdown of the events leading up to Brave New World, check out IGN's Captain America Recap: The Messy Marvel Timeline That Led to Brave New World.Captain America Trilogy [4K UHD + Blu-ray]Includes Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War, along with bonus features for each film. See it at AmazonCaptain America Movies in Chronological Order*Be warned, some descriptions include references to characters and plot points that are technically spoilers1. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)Captain America was introduced into the MCU in 2011s Captain America: The First Avenger, the final solo superhero movie of Marvels Phase One. The First Avenger tells Captain Americas origin story, showing Steve Rogers transformation from rejected military recruit to superhuman instrument of war. The first Captain America movie also introduces Sebastian Stans Bucky Barnes, who goes on to play a bigger role as the MCU's Winter Soldier. The story pits Cap against Red Skull and the forces of Hydra during WWII, making it the earliest-set movie in the MCU timeline.Where to Stream: Disney+2. The Avengers (2012)Captain America returned to the big screen the following year in The Avengers. As teased in The First Avengers end-credits scene, Captain America teams up with Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Thor, and the Hulk to thwart Lokis invasion on Earth.Where to Stream: Disney+3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)Two years after The Avengers (in real life and in the MCU timeline) came Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The heros second solo movie is a tale of espionage and conspiracy that culminates in Cap and Black Widow facing off against The Winter Solider Caps buddy Bucky Barnes from The First Avenger, since brainwashed to act as a Hydra operative. The Winter Soldier introduces Anthony Mackies Falcon, the MCU's new Captain America.Where to Stream: Disney+ or Starz4. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)Cap returned the next year (again, in real life and in the MCU chronology) for Avengers: Age of Ultron to once again fight alongside his superhero superteam. Age of Ultron pit the Avengers against the eponymous villain played by James Spader. The Avengers succeed, and the mid-credits scene sets up their showdown with Thanos. Where to Stream: Disney+ or Starz5. Captain America: Civil War (2016)A year later Marvel released Captain America: Civil War, the heros highest-grossing standalone* movie to date with a $1.1 billion haul at the global box office. Civil War fractures the Avengers, pitting two factions against each other led by Cap and Tony Stark/Iron Man, respectively, while Helmut Zemo is introuced as the films overarching villain.*While Civil War is technically a standalone movie for Cap, it features nearly every major player in the MCU up to that point.Where to Stream: Disney+6. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)Avengers: Infinity War is the first movie in the Avengers two-part battle against Thanos. Cap is part of the massive cast that attempts to stop The Mad Titan from eliminating half of all life in the universe. The team ultimately fails, but Captain America survives the Blip (aka the Snap), setting up the events of Avengers: Endgame.Where to Stream: Disney+7. Avengers: Endgame (2019)Avengers: Endgame hops across time but ultimately resolves five years after the events of Infinty War. Cap and the surviving Avengers work to bring back their lost members by reversing the effects of Thanoss Snap. The result is The Battle of Earth, the MCUs biggest battle yet, between the Avengers (those who survived and were revived) and Thanoss army at the New Avengers Facility in New York.Endgame culminates in Steve Rogers passing his shield to Sam Wison/Falcon.Where to Stream: Disney+8. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021 TV Series)The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the first MCU project in which Sam Wilson serves as Captain America. Set roughly six months after the events of Endgame, the Disney+ series follows Wilson and Bucky Barnes as they battle a group of anti-nationalist supersoldiers known as the Flag Smashers, led by Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman).Where to Stream: Disney+9. Captain America: Brave New World (2025)The Falcon and the Winter Solider sets up the newest Cap movie, Captain America: Brave New World. Heres the official synopsis, courtesy of Marvel:After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.The newly elected U.S. president line implies the movie is set in late 2027 (when a U.S. president is elected) or early 2028 (when they take office), given the decades only presidential elections take place in 2024 and 2028. Brave New World introduces Harrison Ford into the MCU as the aforementioned President Ross/Red Hulk a character portrayed in earlier MCU films by the late actor William Hurt. Where to Watch: In theaters starting February 14, 2025The Future of Captain America in the MCUPlayAfter Brave New World, the next time well see Captain America is likely in Avengers: Doomsday, currently slated for May 1, 2026. Deadline reported both Mackie and Evans will appear in Doomsday, though Evans refuted the part of the report pertaining to his role. Were just as likely to see Captain America in the next-next Avengers movie, Avengers: Secret Wars, due out May 7, 2027. • Dead Cells: The Rogue-Lite Board Game Review
    www.ign.com
Video games used to thrive on their iterative feedback loops: a short run, from which youd learn new skills, then repeat to put those skills into practice and hopefully get a bit further. Its a powerfully addictive model that gave retro games a big part of their appeal and, while gaming has become bigger and better since, there are still games that leverage it effectively, such as Dead Cells. In theory, that iterative model should work just as well on tabletop, and now you can find out with this board game adaptation.Whats in the BoxDead Cells: The Rogue-Lite Board GameSee it at AmazonDead Cells comes in a suitably coffin-heavy box which, once you slide off the lid, greets you with a series of instructions on how to organize the contents. This involves sorting through a tower of cards, putting them into different groups, and then using dividers to store them in the box for easy access to each group when you need it. In addition, theres a lot of cardboard tiles to punch and, again, sort into groups and place into provided compartments in the box. Its a great insert that makes setting up the game much easier, but it will absolutely need to be shelved horizontally: everything will tip out and mix with the box on its side. With that done, you can turn your attention to the rest of the contents. This mostly consists of a series of small boards. Theres no central game board here, rather a separate one for each environment youll have to traverse, plus a combat board and an annexe board which are used to organize the components youll be using during each game. Dead Cells: The Rogue-Lite InfoPlayers: 1-4 (1 or 3 is preferable)Ages: 14+Play Time: 45 mins For between games theres the mutation board, a peculiar artefact covered in fixed polythene pockets to store cards permanently: youll fill some of these during the card organization step. Finally, there are boards for players to use to track the status of their characters, together with some reference sheets, tokens and a standee thats used to track the partys position. All the components are decent quality, and the comic-book style art is cohesive and fits the game very well, conjuring up the same look and feel as the original video game while still managing to appear distinctive. There are a few missteps in the text however, as the rules and player aids could be a lot clearer.Rules and How It PlaysEach player takes a character and their starting combat deck and then the team, represented by that single standee, ventures into the board for the first biome of the game, the Prisoners Quarters. This is a simple path of interlinked spaces, with a couple of decision points, and each space has a face-down tile hinting at what might be found there, such as treasure, or enemies. This is a cooperative board game, but one player is designated as the first player and they get to make decisions for the group while theyre wearing that crown. Certain spaces or actions change who is currently first player, and its a neat solution to the cooperative dilemma of having the most experienced or bossy participant order the group round. As you move into the space you resolve the encounter tile, allowing you to pick up that treasure, or fight enemies, although there are a few board features that vary the mix up a bit like merchants, where you can buy stuff, and skill checks, which let you gamble a card for a small bonus. Most spaces will see you facing off against foes drawn from a deck specific to the biome youre in. Each card marks that enemys health, starting position on the combat board, and actions over three rounds of combat, and a reward for defeating them. Players then choose cards, each of which shows what theyll do over each of those three rounds. You then run each of the rounds deterministically: hearts do damage and the aim is to try and knock out enemies before they can take damaging actions.Theres a lot more to combat than this. Some attacks can hit different positions on the board and, as well as damage, there are effects like bleed, fire and poison. Players also have skills different for each character they can employ, and equipment can add extra actions to the palette. This makes every single combat a fascinating tactical puzzle, based on the card you have. There is one peculiar wrinkle: to ensure exactly three player cards get used in each fight, two- and four-player sessions see someone doubling up or missing out, which makes Dead Cells: The Rogue-Like Board Game feel like its really a one- or three-player game, no matter what it says on the box.Fighting is also remorselessly lethal. The Prisoners Quarters features enemies that can easily put out 2-3 hearts of damage in a single combat, youll face two or three of them at a time, and each character starts with 3 life. If a single player dies, its game over. In all likelihood, you wont even make it half way through the Quarters on your first play. At which point, the reason you spent all that time sorting cards in the box begins to become apparent.During play youll collect various rewards, such as gold teeth you can spend at merchants, equipment and so on. But youll lose these at the end of each run. A far more valuable currency is dead cells, because these can be spent at the conclusion of a session to buy new stuff thats permanent. It might be some upgraded combat cards, the chance to start play with a random piece of equipment, or even a one-off shot that kills an enemy, but each gives you an incrementally higher chance of surviving for another space, potentially earning more cells, and eventually getting you to the exit door that leads to the next board, the Toxic Sewers.Dead Cells: The Rogue-Like Board Game feels like its really a one- or three-player game, no matter what it says on the box.Once youve made that goal, another card type you can collect as a reward, blueprints, come into play. These are upgraded equipment options that you can shuffle into your equipment deck if you finish a run with them. Again, incremental improvements lead to longer survival and the chance for more goodies. While theres a great deal of gambling involved in whether you get good rewards or not, some do offer the chance for strategic fine-tuning, such as the choice of which inferior starting equipment cards to permanently can, or which character is best-suited to a particular upgrade.Again, like combat, theres a whole lot more to this system, including the collection of runes that act as prerequisites for more abilities. You store it all on the cleverly designed inter-biome board which has poly pockets in which to keep permanent upgrades, making it relatively easy to tear the game down and set it up again. And thats fortunate, because the problem with Dead Cells: The Rogue-Lite Board Game is that its a board game, not a video game. On screen, the feedback loop for putting those tiny iterative advancements into play takes five minutes. On the table, while the rules replicate that feeling magnificently well, it takes twenty minutes to half an hour. This might be okay if you got more stuff on each run, or if you had more control over your fate. But the initial gains are frustratingly small and its quite common to draw a selection of enemies that will end your run despite your best efforts, just because you dont have the required cards to deal with them. Eventually, once you make it through the Toxic Sewers, theres a boss to fight which adds some new challenges and excitement but it can easily take 10 plays, several hours of table time, before you get that far, and each of those 10 plays you have to run through the Quarters and the Sewers, seeing encounters youve already seen. It doesnt take that long before even the enjoyable combat system starts to lose its shine. As you get further into the campaign you start to ignore the earlier boards so the issue doesnt get incrementally worse, but theres still an awful lot of repetition. Its enlivened by new encounters and equipment, the constant trickle of new and better gear and skills to incorporate into your games and even some secret envelopes to open if you get far enough, yet the sense of deja vu each time you open up a familiar biome board is palpable.Where to BuyMore Board Games Inspired by Video Games: You can also check out our list of the best board games based on video games for more recommendations. • Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Official Mod Support on the Way
    www.ign.com
Warhorse Studios has announced that official Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 mod support is coming soon, promising to let players bring their wildest creations to medieval Bohemia. The developer behind the hit open-world RPG announced plans to add modding tools via Steamworks with a brief post on Steam. No release date, or any additional details for that matter, were revealed in the post outside of the teams plans to add support at some point in the future. For now, Warhorse simply said that Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 mods will allow players to create, tweak, and expand as they please. While unofficial mods for the project continue to flourish through sites like Nexus Mods, an official image teaser, below, shows off what Henry might look like with a vibrant Zebra mount and fish sword.Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is getting official mod support. Image credit: Warhorse Studios.Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 has made quite the impression on the gaming community since its launch earlier this month, so its not too surprising to hear that Warhorse has some pretty serious post-launch plans. In addition to mod support on Steamworks, players have been told to expect three expansions in 2025. DLC drops start in the summer with the Brushes with Death expansion, with Legacy of the Forge following in the fall and Mysteria Ecclesia scheduled for the winter. Each will build on Henrys story while free content updates add things like Hardcore Mode and Horse Racing.Warhorse is only getting started when it comes to the post-launch support for its massively popular sequel. • Blizzard Reveals Radical Overhaul of Overwatch 2, Including Return of Loot Boxes, Perks, and Third-Person Mode
    www.ign.com
Overwatch 2 is undergoing some radical changes heading into 2025. While the roadmap ahead includes much of what you'd expect to see in terms of new content, the core gameplay itself will see a seismic shift, including the additions of hero perks. We're now nearly nine years out from the debut of Overwatch in 2016, and two-and-a-half from the launch of Overwatch 2. Season 15, kicking off on February 18, is set to completely alter the way Overwatch is played with the inclusion of perks.Game director Aaron Keller and several Blizzard team members announced a swathe of changes and updates planned for Overwatch 2 in the coming months. From new collaborations and heroes to an entirely new way to play, it certainly seems like Overwatch 2 is set for a significant overhaul in the coming year. The changes come amid significant pressure on Blizzard to spark renewed interest in and enthusiasm for Overwatch 2 as it faces tough competition from the likes of NetEase's hugely popular rival hero shooter Marvel Rivals.Overwatch 2 is adding hero perksEach hero will now have two perks, minor and major, to select at newly ascribed levels throughout the match. At level two, a minor perk can upgrade a base aspect of the hero in some way; Orisa's primary fire refunding Heat with critical hits, for example. But a major perk can essentially rework the hero mid-match, like replacing Orisa's Javelin Spin with her Barrier or making her Energy Javelin chargeable, increasing its speed, Knockback, and letting it pierce through enemies. These levels are doled out over the course of a match, eventually unlocking "gameplay-shifting" alterations, as Overwatch 2 lead gameplay designer Alec Dawson described it. These are also either-or choices, so opting for one perk means ditching the other. It's reminiscent of the talent options in another Blizzard game, Heroes of the Storm.Overwatch 2 PerksStadium is a new round-based mode, with third-personAdding perks alone is a notable change, but Season 16 (currently planned for April) teases a second major addition to the Overwatch 2 ecosystem in Stadium mode. Keller calls it the "biggest game mode" the team has made since Overwatch launched, and it's got some radical ideas.Stadium is a 5v5, best-of-7 round-based competitive mode where players accrue and spend currency between bouts to improve their heroes. Modifications can boost attributes like survivability or damage, while traits can unlock some big hero-shifting alterations, like Reaper flying in his Wraith Form. Perks are not in Stadium, but that doesn't seem to mean that those additions will not make it in, in some way and at some point.Alongside the added modification options and rounds, Stadium also introduces a third-person mode, to "see more of the battlefield and your modifications in action," as Keller put it. Players will have the option to swap between either a first or third-person camera. Stadium will launch with a core roster of 14 heroes to start, with more heroes arriving, as well as additional maps and modes, as time goes on.Overwatch 2 Stadium ScreenshotsGOATs are coming to Overwatch ClassicBlizzard is continuing to experiment with several other play modes, including 6v6 and Overwatch Classic. On the former front, more events are on the way, and Blizzard is planning to launch a 6v6 competitive open queue, with a maximum of two tanks per team. Those hoping for more tanks will want to head to Overwatch Classic, arriving midway through Season 16, which will revive the "GOATs Meta" days of Overwatch 1. The three-tank, three-support era of Overwatch will return in another iteration of the throwback mode, reminding us all of that game-shifting strategy. The development team is also planning on more seasonal events including April Fools', Summer Games, and Dr. Junkenstein's Halloween event.Freja arrives in Season 16 - and Aqua followsThe next hero heading to Overwatch 2, Freja, is set for Season 16. She's a crossbow-wielding bounty hunter from Denmark who can fill an enemy full of explosive bolts and bola them if they try to run.Alongside Freja's reveal and some gameplay, we also got a brief look at concept art for Blizzard's next hero, Aqua. Boasting an ornate staff and bending some water, he's definitely got a look. We'll learn more about Aqua later this year.Overwatch 2 New Heroes ScreenshotsLoot boxes are backYes, the infamous loot box is coming back to Overwatch. After disappearing amid the transition into battle passes and other options for cosmetics, Blizzard is adding loot boxes back. IGN has confirmed that loot boxes will not be paid for, and only available through free means, such as the free track of the battle pass and weekly rewards. One notable change is you'll see the odds in a loot box, and what you're likely to get from it, before opening."We're keeping it fun while being transparent about what's inside, and the rate of various drops from opening each box," senior systems designer Gavin Winter said.Hero bans, map voting, and more are coming to competitive playA host of competitive updates are on the way for Overwatch 2. Season 15 will reset competitive ranks, but new rewards, like Galactic weapon skins and special weapon charms, should provide incentive to grind back up. Hero portraits will also get rank icons again. Most notably, hero bans are coming to competitive Overwatch 2 in Season 16. A commonplace option for many competitive games, this could be an interesting method for shaking up play. Further on, after hero bans are implemented, Blizzard also plans to add map voting as well.Overwatch 2 Season 15 ScreenshotsCosmetics galoreA gigantic amount of cosmetics were shown throughout today's stream, spotlighting numerous new looks for the heroes of Overwatch 2. Zenyatta is the next Mythic skin, inspired by the dragon Pixiu. He arrives in Season 15, alongside many other skins for characters like Doomfist, Venture, Tracer, Junker Queen, and more. A Widowmaker Mythic weapon skin is also on the way, for midway through Season 15.Further out, several more cosmetic options will arrive, including a magical girl-inspired "Dokiwatch" Mythic skin for Juno and a Mythic weapon skin for Mercy. Reaper is also due for a Mythic weapon skin, and D.Va will be getting a Mythic skin later on too.On top of all that, Overwatch 2 is certainly no stranger to collaborations, and the team is planning more of them. K-pop fans will probably be happy to hear that LE SSERAFIM is partnering with Blizzard for a second collaboration, with brand-new in-game skins and cosmetics this March.Overwatch 2 New CosmeticsThe competitive landscape growsOverwatch's competitive side is also expanding, with a new stage added in China and more live events, which the team says will double the amount of gameplay and broadcasts. Face.it leagues are getting integrated into the competitive ecosystem, and a new tournament system for promotion and relegation is on the way. Teams are also getting in-game items for fans to rep, with proceeds going directly towards the organizations.Eric is a freelance writer for IGN.

  • Civilization 7 Mod Makers Are Already Tinkering With Its UI, Map Size, and More
    www.ign.com
Civilization 7 is out and developer Firaxis is already working to address its 'mixed' user review rating on Steam. But modders are also on the case, adding what they can to expand and iterate on the base experience.Hosted on the Civ Fanatics site, mods are already starting to pop up for Civilization 7. Many build on the base game or put extra modifiers on world effects. More Natural Wonders, for example, does exactly what it says, doubling the amount of Natural Wonders that spawn on each map size. Or, for those who don't want to meet the requirements to unlock certain civilizations, the Unlock all Civs mod undoes that particular constraint. While not exactly in the spirit of balance, the mods are nice tools to have if you're looking to tinker with the game. The most popular mod, judging by downloads, is Sukritact's Simple UI Adjustments, which makes "[quality of life] and aesthetic adjustments to the game's UI." The mod lets Diplomacy be initiated through the city banner, adjusts Plot Yield icons to be smaller on unimproved or unworked tiles, and adjusts the tooltips as well. The official Patch 1.01 for Civilization 7 has already begun to address some of these issues, taking aim at the user interface, AI, map variety, and other community complaints. It's the first in a "series of upcoming patches" from Firaxis, intent on addressing feedback from Civilization 7's advanced access period.Yet modders are still honing in on everything from AI to fonts and lenses, and even the pause menu. While early quality-of-life updates are prominent, some mods are looking to future possibilites, like one that adds massive map sizes. It's still early days, but considering Civ's long history of eager mod support, it's likely we'll see more and more outside adjustments pop up alongside Firaxis' own efforts to fine-tune Civilization 7.In a recent interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the negative reviews, but said the "legacy Civ audience" will come around."We think that as people play the game longer, the sentiment improves because with every launch of a new Civ, the team pushes the envelope a little bit and our legacy Civ audience is a little bit nervous about what they initially see and then they realize, wow, this is actually really incredible, and they dive in," Zelnick said.Eric is a freelance writer for IGN.

  • Elden Ring Nightreign Release Date Confirmed
    www.ign.com
Elden Ring Nightreign launches on May 30, 2025 priced $40 across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, publisher Bandai Namco has confirmed.Confirmation of the release date comes ahead of the Elden Ring Nightreign network test, which kicks off on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S only on February 14 and ends February 17, with various session times planned. This means you won't be able to play the network test throughout the entire four days, rather during five three-hour periods.Elden Ring Nightreign network test session timings:February 14: 3am-6am PT / 6am-9am ETFebruary 14: 7pm-10pm PT / 10pm-1am ETFebruary 15: 11am-2pm PT / 2pm-5pm ETFebruary 16: 3am-6am PT / 6am-9am ETFebruary 16: 7pm-10pm PT / 10pm-1am ETThe network test is a preliminary verification test in which the selected testers play a portion of the game prior to the full game launch, Bandai Namco said. "This large-scale Network Stress Test is designed to evaluate various aspects of the online system's functionality and performance. We are looking forward to your cooperation to make Elden Ring Nightreign even better."PlayElden Ring Nightreign is FromSoftwares standalone co-operative spin-off set in a world parallel to that of 2022s Elden Ring. The network test will allow three players to team up and take their chosen Nightfarers to battle "against new terrors, and explore an ever-changing map to defeat increasingly challenging bosses and ultimately take on the Nightlord," Bandai Namco added, before confirming the network test features a three day-and-night cycle squads must try to outlast. Here's the official blurb:The all-new adventure in Elden Ring Nightreign begins at the Roundtable Hold, set in a universe parallel to the events of Elden Ring. Players must choose from eight unique characters, each with their own abilities and powerful Ultimates. Their journeys take them to Limveld, an ever-changing environment, where they will have to make split-second decisions when it comes to combat and exploration in the face of a night cycle that shrinks the map with the coming Nights Tide.At the end of each night, players will face a powerful boss and, if victorious, awaken to bigger challenges. Each session will culminate in the third night when they must face off against the chosen Nightlord. Individuals can fight the night alone, but strength will come in numbers. Nightfarers must learn to cooperate to take down these challenges, combining their unique abilities together for an unparalleled experience. All is not lost for those who fall in defeat. Unsuccessful runs will grant players relics to allow them to customize and upgrade their characters tailored to their personal play styles.Elden Ring Nightreign is unlike any experience created before by FromSoftware, Inc. In this condensed action RPG, players will never experience the same journey twice as enemies, rewards, and Limveld itself are ever-shifting and evolving with each new session. Defeating greater enemies and venturing into the more dangerous parts of the map will uncover more powerful weapons and greater Rune rewards. Finding Sites of Grace gives each hero a chance to level up and gain crucial power. With each session-based adventure being akin to playing through an open-air dungeon, every journey provides an opportunity to grow lasting stat bonuses. Successful runs against the night bring players ever closer to defeating the Nightlord and unraveling the story behind each Nightfarer in this parallel world.Last year IGN had the opportunity to visit FromSoftware and go hands-on with an early build of Elden Ring Nightreign. We came away impressed, stating that Elden Ring Nightreign takes the cautious dungeon crawls of Elden Ring and turbocharges them into propulsive, slash n dash speedruns.Check out IGN's interview with game director Junya Ishizaki for even more on Elden Ring Nightreign.Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN. • Killing Floor 3 Hands-On Preview: Stylishly Brutal Zombie Shooter
    www.ign.com
Over 70 years have passed since the events of Killing Floor 2, and the Horzine Corporation continues finding new ways to make our lives miserable. Few things are worse than the relentless pursuit of Zeds, especially now they've been augmented into something worse, yet Killing Floor 3 refines the existing formula to deliver a significant leap over its predecessor. What's here so far feels flashier, stylish, and it's shaping up to be a bloody good time.Going hands-on before next week's closed beta test, I was joined by fellow critics and Tripwire's staff for some intense co-op matches. The Stronghold leaves a good first impression as your new base, letting you access facilities while exploring. It's a more immersive approach that doesn't place everything behind menus, though that remains an option for quick convenience. Once you're ready, choose your location and prepare to head out.Killing Floor 3 - Screenshots and SpecialistsSurvival remains your main goal, and the six specialists provide an appealing range of play styles to suit different tastes. Blasting through Zeds with a shotgun as the Engineer feels great, as does slicing them into finer pieces as the Ninja. I personally prefer giving Zeds a quick cremation with Firebug, each character has compelling perks and versatile loadouts at the start.Blasting through Zeds with a shotgun as the Engineer feels great, as does slicing them into finer pieces as the Ninja.Killing Floor 3 offers great evolutionary changes over Killing Floor 2, though it doesn't change the fact that defeating zombie waves is an idea done to the absolute death. You're still clearing through waves as they appear across a series of well-designed expansive maps, while stocking up on goods between missions from trading stations feels cleaner and more streamlined. The core idea remains intact while boasting significantly improved visuals, boosted further by welcome user interface changes.PlayTripwire's brought back the Massive Evisceration and Trauma system, or M.E.A.T., for added visual flair to these enjoyably brutal kills. Special abilities are useful in a pinch when Zeds suddenly surround you, though a lengthy cooldown means you can't rely on this too heavily. Dismembering heads and limbs alike soon becomes utter carnage with the suitably excessive blood splatter as you tear down these well varied enemies. Grotesque acid spewing Bloats still haunt these maps, Sirens are terrifying screamers, and who on earth thinks to give these cursed creatures a chainsaw?I'm also enjoying how Killing Floor 3 implements its light narrative through assignment challenges, something Tripwire aims to use for an evolving story. You can safely ignore these if all you want is plow through more hordes, yet giving you optional criteria to hit during a mission provides that little extra for those who'd like it. Granted, the endless hordes can become relatively irritating as you try searching for particular parts, though it's a welcome inclusion regardless.PlayI'm also pleased by the horde balancing depending on your team size; playing with a group of four or playing solo all feels adequately scaled. My big concern is that the action will become stale during longer sessions, so I'm pleased Tripwire's introduced gameplay modifiers that kick in across rounds.Changing criteria like ensuring only crawlers try to attack you ensures these threats remain sufficiently varied.Killing Floor 3Tripwire InteractiveMar 25, 2025There's a lot I've yet to see, so I'm hesitant to make any definitive calls yet on Killing Floor 3. The launch game features seven maps, three difficulty modes, six specialists and different levels for customizing your character, and Tripwire plans post-launch similar to Killing Floor 2. So far, I've only tried three maps and half the specialists, while the store didn't include finalized item pricing.Still, it's a promising start. Plowing through Zed hordes is nothing particularly new, yet Killing Floor 3 feels like it's doing enough to compellingly refresh this familiar format. Whether it can maintain that momentum long-term is another matter, but I'm ready for more when Killing Floor 3 launches on March 25 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5. The closed beta kicks off next week from February 20 to February 24.

  • Every Marvel TV Show in the Disney+ Era Ranked
    www.ign.com
From the classic Incredible Hulk TV series to the network hits Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. all the way through the violent Netflix street level shows that introduced characters like Daredevil and Luke Cage to streaming audiences, Marvel Comics have long inspired small screen adaptations. Previous attempts to connect the live action TV shows to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe have often stumbled and stalled who remembers Runaways and Cloak and Dagger? but in 2021 Marvel Studios embarked on a new era. This watershed moment began with the Mouse House stacking their flagship streaming service Disney+ with new series that were deeply interconnected to the multi-billion dollar film franchise for which Marvel Studios is best known. With the charming Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man swinging onto our screens as the 13th Disney+ Marvel show in just four years, we thought it was the perfect time to look back on the Marvel Studios television that came before. Like the Avengers eating shawarma in the ruins of New York, the Marvel experts here at IGN came together and chopped it up, each ranking all 12 of the Disney+ Marvel TV shows so far and aggregrating that ranking. Stay tuned for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Mans addition after the series is over.Every Marvel TV Show in the Disney+ Era Ranked12. Secret Invasion Disney+It feels extremely strange to be writing about the fact we got a Secret Invasion series and it was so bad that it was pretty much unanimous across the voting board that it was the worst series that Marvel TV has made yet. From the comic book perspective Secret Invasion stands as one of the most important and game-changing events in Marvel Comics history, but this show wasn't bothered about any of that. Director Ali Selim regularly talked about how he hadn't read the comics and didn't think he needed them to tell a good story. The MCU has proven that when creators have a vision those changes can bring vibrant new takes on iconic stories, but Secret Invasion simply didn't have the range. Trying to recreate the cold war inspired espionage tone of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Secret Invasion focused on Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson) attempting to take down a Skrull invasion. But slow storytelling, an AI-made opening, the unceremonious fridging of a beloved female character, and an extremely weird new superpowered character that we'll likely never see again left this one at the bottom of the barrel of the MCU television series on Disney+. 11. EchoDisney+The quality leap from Secret Invasion is a pretty big one, so despite the fact that Echo ended up in our 11th place spot, it wasn't anywhere closely as maligned as our bottom scorer. Alaqua Cox returned from Hawkeye as the deaf Cheyenne superhero Echo in this intimate action-packed story about her life as she heads back to the reservation trying to balance her powers, her past, and her relationship with the man who raised her, Daredevil villain and nefarious bad guy, Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio). Like many of the later waves of Marvel Studios TV, Echo was chopped and changed with a shortened run of episodes that left some fans feeling unsatisfied. Despite that there are some killer action sequences including a radical fight against Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) himself that opened the series on a high note. It was also a groundbreaking series showcasing a predominantly indigenous cast of creatives both on and off the screen. While it may not have had the impact of some of our higher ranked shows it's still worth a watch and stands as a unique, emotionally charged, and interesting entry into the MCU. 10. Moon KnightDisney+You might be shocked to see this Oscar Isaac star vehicle so low in our ranking, but this series just didn't move the needle enough with our voters to climb to loftier heights. The multiple personalities of Marc Spector populate this dark antihero story with mystery and mayhem as the titular antihero struggles to maintain his sanity amid flurries of fisticuffs. This surrealist series mixes elements of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Indiana Jones, and Marvel's own X-Men-inspired series from the Fox era, Legion. As with most Marvel shows produced both before and during the current Disney+ regime the storytellers made sure to introduce a new hero in the form of Scarlet Scarab (May Calamawy), who became a series standout character by the end. Along with F. Murray Abraham as the voice of Khonshu and Ethan Hawke as the villainous Dr. Arthur Harrow, Moon Knight sported a strong cast but simply couldn't fight its way to the top of our list or a second season. 9. The Falcon and the Winter SoldierDisney+While it should have been a soaring hit, The Falcon & the Winter Soldier struggled to lift off. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan returned from the Marvel films as the title characters of the series, and fans responded positively to their on-screen chemistry, but this second ever Marvel TV show released on Disney+ was dragged down by murky morals, a heavy reliance on the Blip timeline, and an emphasis on espionage instead of high-flying action.Interestingly, this was the first TV show to be developed by Marvel Studios and for a time it was slated to be the first one released as well. However, the COVID pandemic shuffled around the release schedule and eventually WandaVision took the debut slot. It's hard to say how much the eventual quality of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was changed by the worldwide health crisis, but the production was no doubt impacted, halting from March 2020 until August of that year. Regardless of the outcome, many narrative aspects of this show have become essential to understanding the current state of the MCU, most notably this year's Thunderbolts* film.Rank the Marvel TV shows of the Disney+ era yourself with the Tier List tool below!8. What If...?Disney+Only just edging past The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, What If...? is most notable for its first season which introduced fans to wild alt-universe versions of their fave MCU heroes. Loosely inspired by the classic Marvel anthology series of the same name, over three seasons the show has gone across the multiverse, following heroes like T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), and more. While your mileage may vary on all the episodes, most fans have a favorite. Whether it was Doctor Strange destroying his universe to reconnect with Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) or Marvel Zombies finally adapted to screen or perhaps the new Mohawk hero, Kahhori, who was so popular she made the rare jump from the TV to the comics there really is an episode for everyone. It's also notable as the first entry from Marvel Studios' burgeoning Marvel Animation group, which would go onto bring X-Men '97 to the screen as well as Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and the upcoming Eyes of Wakanda series from Ryan Coogler. 7. She Hulk: Attorney at LawDisney+She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and its oddly prophetic sense of humor got it pretty close to the top half of our list. Though it did share some of the same production issues as the later stage Disney+ TV series, this hilarious meta Marvel still outshone any troubles it may have gone through. Jennifer Walters finally made it to live-action brought to life by Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany, and the green-skinned gal was just as badass, quippy, and fourth-wall-breaking as her comic book counterpart. One of the longer Marvel Disney+ TV shows at least so far as episode count is concerned given its thirty-minute entries She-Hulk also broke new ground with its genre-defying finale that smashed its way out expectations to bring the trailblazing fourth-wall-breaking comic tradition to the screen. The series is also notable as one of the shows with the most deep-cut and varied Marvel character cameos and appearances in it from mutants to the Wrecking Crew, Porcupine to Aguila. And, of course, Daredevil fans got a hearty dose of Matt Murdock as Jens boyfriend? Bootycall? Theyre probably not labeling it.6. Agatha All AlongDisney+The most recent live-action MCU series from Disney+ delivered a delightfully dark and hilarious story while becoming an instant and memeable hit. Created by WandaVision head honcho Jac Schaeffer, the series follows Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) coming out of the televisual trance she was put into by the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and heading down the Witches Road with a new coven. With a stacked cast of brilliant women including the legendary Patti LuPone, Agatha All Along built on the fantastic work of WandaVision while introducing a key new character who will likely go on to change the shape of the franchise. Despite being one of the newer entries to the MCU it also stands as one of the most unique and interesting, which explains how it climbed so high in our ranking. 5. Ms. MarvelDisney+In easily the best bit of casting in the MCU since Robert Downey Jr. stepped into Tony Stark's Iron Man armor, Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel felt every bit as natural and revolutionary as the one-time bad boy who led the MCU to Hollywood-changing heights. The joyous premiere episodes of Ms. Marvel were like a breath of fresh air with a new younger look and a slice of life feel, and that vibrant new take on the MCU launched Ms. Marvel into our top five. The series has a political and historical resonance that speaks to the ability of superhero stories to reflect the realities of our real world as well as entertain us. Vellani quickly jumped from the small screen to the big screen with her infectious energy being just as appealing in The Marvels as it was in her titular debut. So if you still haven't checked out this charming and fun entry into the Marvel canon, it's high time. 4. X-Men '97Disney+One of the most anticipated and widely acclaimed Disney+ series so far was this direct sequel to the beloved 90s X-Men: The Animated Series. While fans were excited to return to that nostalgic world, X-Men '97 became a breakout hit with a weekly release schedule that allowed theories and word of mouth to take hold. Speaking to a wide audience both familiar with the original Saturday morning cartoon and new to the lore, X-Men '97 was a phenomenon in the summer of 2024. It certainly didn't hurt that the show's sophisticated storytelling managed to distill classic X-Men comic book arcs into individual episodes that sped through Chris Claremont's long-gestating plot points without sacrificing meaningful character development. The devastating impact of X-Men '97's standout episode the midseason shocker, "Remember It" combined with Channing Tatum's performance in Deadpool & Wolverine to reinstate Gambit as a core member of the mutant strikeforce. The animators' fondness for the Ragin' Cajun and the voice acting of A.J. LoCascio made the pink-powered playboy a fan favorite again for the first time since the 90s. Season 2 may be at least a year away, but the effects of this brilliant animated series can be felt in the current state of Marvel's publishing line, with Gambit featured in the current Uncanny X-Men series. So hop over to the comics to sate your appetite for more mutant action until the next episodes drop. 3. HawkeyeDisney+A literal Christmas present, this holiday set series came wrapped in a bow, blessing Disney+ viewers with a truly great entry. Centering on Clint "Hawkeye" Barton (Jeremy Renner) as he deals with trying to acclimatize to life outside of the Avengers, this series took heavily from the beloved Matt Fraction and David Aja Hawkeye run that saw Clint team up with Kate Bishop on a ground level romp through New York. Hawkeye the younger was brought to life on screen by the brilliant Hailee Steinfeld, who introduced a reimagined Kate who was inspired to become a hero after the Chitauri Invasion of New York. Somehow combining the cheer of Home Alone with the grit of street level superhero stories, this has become a firm holiday favorite among Marvel lovers. It was also the first time we saw Vincent D'Onofrio return as Kingpin, making (at least parts of) the Netflix Marvel shows MCU canon. There were also memorable moments for soon-to-be Thunderbolts member Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), and a big reveal about Clint's loving wife Laura (Linda Cardellini). Hawkeye is one of the series that feels like its been most impactful to the wider MCU and we can still feel its fingerprints on the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again, Thunderbolts*, and the long-discussed but yet-to-be-official Young Avengers. 2. LokiDisney+Loki ended up being something really special. This esoteric and emotionally driven show was never afraid to take big swings, which makes sense seeing as the first one was that it had to find an inventive way to resurrect one of the most popular MCU characters of all time in Tom Hiddleston's Loki. His death at the hands of Thanos in Infinity War was one of the franchise's most emotional moments, so the show had to deliver something worthy of its complicated protagonist. Thanks to the timey wimey shenanigans of the Time Variance Authority, Loki managed to bring back multiple iterations of the anti-hero, posing existential questions of the nature of self and heroism while also introducing a new MCU legend in Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson). With gorgeous visuals, impactful storytelling, and relationships that everyone rooted for, Loki probably stands alongside Hawkeye as one of the wider appeal series from the roster that managed to hook viewers who might not have watched Marvel otherwise. 1. WandaVisionDisney+The original and still the best. WandaVision rose to the top with near consistent number one rankings to no ones surprise. Unexpected, meta, and utterly unique, this superhero series was a breakout hit despite its unusual metatextual framing. A love letter to the history of American television that was also an emotionally devastating exploration of grief and romance, there was nothing like WandaVision then and there hasn't been since. Grief, motherhood, loss, love, and how those can all manifest when you're a superpowered witch dealing with massive amounts of trauma may seem like a reach for a TV series to launch the MCU, but WandaVision managed to pull it off despite The Falcon and the Winter Soldier being the originally intended launch series. As Wanda navigated a surreal Easter egg filled TV dreamscape, viewers were quickly sucked into the dramatic, melancholy, and often hilarious life of Wanda, Vision (Paul Bettany), and their two children. WandaVision made a statement that Disney+ was here and ready to shake things up. Whether or not the streamer and its MCU programming have lived up to the hype is still up for discussion, but almost half a decade later WandaVision's legacy is still unquestionable. • Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy Review
    www.ign.com
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy streams on Peacock beginning Thursday, February 13, and opens in theaters outside the United States on February 14.Even the cheeriest romantic comedy ending can leave us with a nagging question: What follows happily ever after? After all, there are no neat, easily satisfying endings in real life a truth hit home in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, the fourth in a series of rom-coms whose heroine has seen her share of happily ever after. Its the first entry in the franchise to be undercut by a note of genuine sadness, leaving Bridget (Rene Zellweger) the widowed mother of two small children: 9-year-old Billy (Casper Knopf) and 4-year-old Mabel (Mila Jankovic). While director Michael Morris take on Helen Fieldings novel of the same name also has a totally unexpected and novel touch of childlike wonder and magic, theres no avoiding that this chapter in Bridgets story is in large part about grief. Shes older and a little wiser and, though the movie ditches some of the usual silliness as a result (for the better perhaps, after the misfire that was 2004s Edge of Reason), this is more than made up for by a whipsmart script from Fielding, Dan Mazer, and Abi Morgan. With her husband Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) gone though not Firth himself, who plays the late Mr. Darcy as Bridgets imagined companion at some especially poignant moments Mad About the Boy jokes that its protagonist is back where she started in Bridget Jones Diary. Shes still susceptible to bad advice, with her trio of pals Shazzer (Sally Phillips), Jude (Shirley Henderson), and Tom (James Callis) reiterating their favorite solution to lifes many problems: sex. As the endearing everywoman navigates the era of Tinder while simultaneously juggling childcare, all the things the series is known and loved for relatability, mishap-packed charm, picture-perfect London locations, and great running gags are in plentiful supply. She even finds herself at the epicenter of a classic love triangle, caught between the affections of swoony, part-time ranger Roxster (Leo Woodall the boy of the title) and the more sedate new teacher at her kids school, Mr. Wallaker (Chiwetel Ejiofor).Much as a calamitous meet-cute in the park with Roxster and stomach-suctioning date-night knickers might sound like well-worn ground for the series, Mad About the Boy ascends to fresh levels of sly self-awareness and crackling comedy with the bonus of parenting jokes that rival the heights of About a Boy or the BBC sitcom Outnumbered. In fact, young Mabel gets some of the best lines, and her comic timing often outstrips that of her older co-stars. (Her main quip is asking every man she encounters if he is going to be her new daddy.) Having Mabel and Billys perspective in the mix leavens some of the heavier passages; the enigmatic owl who takes up residence outside of the kids bedroom window takes much of the credit there. There is also a sizzling energy between Zellweger and her latest love interest Woodall, and the movie is refreshingly unjudgmental about the 27-year age-gap wedged between them. If anything, one of its few disappointments is that their relationship could use more screentime. We dont get much backstory for Roxster, a character who claims to be more responsible than your average 28-year-old but then wildly waltzes in and out of Bridgets life more than once. Mr. Wallaker is shown to be the more reliable prospect in comparison, with Mad About the Boy drawing obvious parallels between his brand of uptight rationalism and Marks no-nonsense approach to life. The heat Ejiofor generates opposite Zellweger cant quite compare to the uncontrolled flames she and Woodall ignite, but smaller sparks do fly.Bridget Jones: Mad About the BoyAlongside these bright new stars in the Bridget Jones universe, fan favorites from earlier in the series make encore appearances, including Emma Thompson as Bridgets snippy doctor and Jim Broadbent and Gemma Jones as her madcap parents. Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant), miraculously raised from the dead after being killed off in Bridget Jones Baby, appears to offer a trace of the franchises smutty, slightly outdated 2000s humor while he occasionally mucks in with babysitting duties. But most notably there is a newfound gentleness in this story about loss. Mad About the Boy recycles some some musty material on the topic, but treads carefully to ensure its meaningfully used: a lesser movie would have over-sentimentalized Billys storyline of a son struggling after his fathers death or cynically used his plight simply as a means to bring Bridget and Mr. Wallaker together. Whatever room is made for schmaltz, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy always stays (one sickly musical number notwithstanding) just on the right side of artlessness and sincerity.

  • Alan Wake 2 Tops 2 million Sales and Finally Starts Turning a Profit
    www.ign.com
Alan Wake 2 has exceeded 2 million sales worldwide. That's up from the 1.3 million copies sold between October 2023 and March 2024, when developer Remedy hailed the horror sequel as its fastest-selling game ever.In its latest financial report to investors, Remedy said the milestone coupled with the release of The Lake House expansion and Alan Wake 2 Deluxe Edition now means the game has "started to accrue royalties" after recouping its development and marketing costs.Looking ahead, the studio also teased that Control 2, which is being developed in partnership with Annapurna, "has been finalizing the production readiness stage" and will enter full production at the end of February 2025, along with Max Payne 1&2 Remake, which is also "making steady progress in full production."Similarly, FBC: Firebreak, Remedy's multiplayer Control spin-off, continues in full production following a "successful" closed technical test in December, which saw external players test matchmaking and back-end services. While no firm release date was confirmed, FBC: Firebreak will be self-published by Remedy later in 2025."We are in a great place to begin our strategy period and have set targets we are confident in reaching," CEO Tero Virtala said. In IGN's Alan Wake 2 review, we awarded the sequel an impressive 9/10, calling it a "superb survival horror sequel that makes the cult classic original seem like little more than a rough first draft by comparison."Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN. • The Amazon Presidents' Day Sale Has Some of the Best Deals of the Year So Far
    www.ign.com
When it comes to sales events, Presidents' Day might not be on your radar. It's just another federal holiday that happens to be right in the middle of February. Nevertheless, retailers are starting to drop prices on plenty of items ahead of the weekend. The Amazon Presidents' Day sale may not be as big as Black Friday or Prime Day, but if you're looking to do some online shopping right now, we're seeing some of the best prices of the year so far.If you want to take a look at the full sale, Amazon has an official Presidents' Day landing pageThe Best Amazon Presidents' Day Deals TodayLowest Price in 2025Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (16 GB)Lowest Price in 2025Pikachu Sleeping PlushLowest-Ever PriceDuracell Coppertop AA Batteries (28-Pack)Lowest Price in 2025Apple Watch SE (2nd Gen)Lowest-Ever PriceCRKD Nitro Deck for SwitchLowest-Ever PriceRing Battery DoorbellLowest-Ever PriceAlienware AW2724DM Gaming MonitorLowest Price in 2025Amazon Fire TV Stick 4KLowest Price in 2025Crest 3D White Advanced (4-Pack)Lowest-Ever PriceAmazon Fire TV 55" Omni SeriesLowest Price in 2025Beats Studio Pro - Wireless Bluetooth Noise Cancelling HeadphonesLowest Price in 2025 Levoit Top Fill HumidifierLowest-Ever PriceCovid and Flu Tests (4-Pack)Lowest Price in 2025Google Pixel 9 Pro XL - UnlockedLowest-Ever PriceAnker MagGo Power BankLowest Price in 2025Bose QuietComfort Bluetooth HeadphonesLowest-Ever PriceAeroGarden Harvest EliteLowest-Ever PriceBeats Solo BudsLowest Price in 2025Nespresso Capsules Original LineLowest-Ever PriceDragon Age: The Veilguard - Xbox Series XLowest Price in 2025TP-Link AX3000 WiFi 6 RouterLowest Price in 2025DEWALT 20V Max Cordless DrillLowest Price in 2025Nespresso Vertuo Coffee and Espresso MachineA good portion of the best deals in this Amazon sale are on Amazon devices. The deal on the Kindle Paperwhite is the first discount we've seen since Black Friday, which especially notable since Kindle deals in general are few and far between. The Apple Watch SE discount we covered last week as part of the Valentine's Day sale is still noteworthy at its current price. There's also a pretty good sale on sleeping Pokmon plushies that brings these adorable toys down to their lowest price of the year so far. There are generally a lot of discounts that Amazon has brought onto its sale page that we've either seen before in 2025 or were much lower during sales events last year. If you're looking to save as much money as possible, it's probably worth waiting for better price cuts on any bigger purchases.Should You Shop the Amazon Presidents' Day Sales or Wait? One of the advantages Presidents' Day sales have are the time of year they take place. If you look at our calendar of upcoming sales events, there aren't really any big shopping holidays again until Memorial Day weekend at the end of May. So while a lot of these discounts will likely be better during main events like Prime Day and Black Friday, if you're looking to buy something right now, this sale is likely your best bet. That being said, you can still be smart about your purchases. If you don't need a Kindle or a TV right this moment, it's still worth waiting until later in the year. You can also check historical pricing on CamelCamelCamel to make sure any of the deals listed are actually worth it. • Save an Extra $200 Off the Best Budget-Friendly Ergonomic Chair
    www.ign.com
Flexispot is running an early President's Day deal on its workhorse Flexispot C7 ergonomic chair with built-in footrest. It's normally listed at $429.99, but there's a $201 off coupon code "CVSGFG7229" that drops it to only $229. We generally like the Flexispot brand because it includes electric standing desks and ergonomic chairs with solid build quality and a plethora of practical features at a fraction of the price compared to other more well-known models. We rated the Flexispot C7 is the best budget-friendly ergonomic chair and the Flexispot E7 Pro as the best overall standing desk of 2024.Flexispot C7 Ergonomic Chair with Footrest for $229Flexispot C7 Ergonomic ChairThe Flexispot C7 chair with footrest is normally priced at starts at $430, but there's a massive $201 coupon code "CVSGFG7229" that drops the price to $229. The C7 offers a ton of features that are typically reserved for much more expensive chairs. This includes an automatically adjusting lumbar system, adjustable seat depth, adjustable armrests, adjustable seat tilt, adjustable headrest, 128 degrees of recline, and more. The built-in footrest is an uncommon yet very practical add-on. It removes the need to get a separate footrest sitting on your floor, and it folds away when not in use.Flexispot C7 Review (without footrest) by Bill LoguidiceThe FlexiSpot C7 is a solid chair. For the price, however, I would have preferred a more premium-feeling leather or leather-like material instead of fabric, as well as more attention to some other aspects like cushioning. I also found the fact that you can't lock the wrist rests in place an occasional annoyance. If you don't mind some of its quirks and prize adjustment in a chair, then the C7 makes a good choice. Compared to straight-up gaming chairs, its sedate styling means it won't be out of place in even the most conservative of office environments. If you'd like a flashier or more luxurious offering, however, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a more premium chair, Secretlab has kicked off its Presidents' Day Sale, which starts now and runs until February 17. Save up to $139 off Secretlab's popular Titan line of gaming chairs, Magnus gaming desks (including the Magnus Pro electric standing desk model), and accessories like the Secretlab Skins upholstery covers. Unfortunately, newer releases like the Titan Evo Nanogen chair and the recliner add-on are exempt from this sale. Why Should You Trust IGN's Deals Team?IGN's deals team has a combined 30+ years of experience finding the best discounts in gaming, tech, and just about every other category. • Mortal Kombat 2: First Look at Karl Urban's Johnny Cage
    www.ign.com
The next Mortal Kombat movie is on its way and we just got our first look at one of the films new faces: Johnny Cage.Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon shared a poster of Karl Urban (The Boys, Judge Dredd) as the Hollywood actor and Mortal Kombatant, Johnny Cage. The poster is designed to look like a fake Johnny Cage movie, complete with two whole motorcycles jumping out of flames.Mortal Kombat 2 is a direct sequel to the 2021 reboot movie starring Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Hiroyuki Sanada (Shogun) as Scorpion, and Joe Taslim (The Raid) as Sub-Zero. Urban is one of several new actors joining the cast that will also include Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi.A fake movie poster for a Johnny Cage movie promoting the very real movie, Mortal Kombat 2. Credit: Warner Bros. The first movie centered around Tans Cole Young as he enters the world of Mortal Kombat and learns about the violent past between Scorpion and Sub-Zero. No word on the plot details for the sequel, but given Mortal Kombats extensive video game history, theres a lot of storylines they could potentially use for the new movie. The first movie was initially slated to be released in theaters before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted theater releases worldwide. Instead, Mortal Kombat was one of the new movies distributed directly onto HBO Max. However the sequel will be receiving a theatrical release on October 24, 2025.We gave Mortal Kombat a 7 in our review, calling it a "spectacular display of blood, guts, and effects heavy martial arts battles.Matt Kim is IGN's Senior Features Editor. • Sony Bravia Theater Quad Review
    www.ign.com
Sony has never been one to shy away from pushing the boundaries of home theater innovation, and with the Bravia Theater Quad, the company is making its latest bold statement in the world of immersive audio. The Theater Quad is a four-speaker ensemble that takes the plug-and-play simplicity of a soundbar and blends it with the spatial prowess of a traditional home theater setup, making for a system that is both physically and audibly different from anything else you can buy today. Its also more expensive than most flagship offerings on the market today. But for its gargantuan $2,500 retail price, the Quad creates a soundstage that, thanks to its Dolby Atmos capabilities, spatial sound technologies, and overall detail, is one of the best weve heard to date. Its not perfect, especially when it comes to bass. But its an experience that you truly have to hear to believe. Sony Bravia Theater Quad PhotosSony Bravia Theater Quad Design and Features First, lets address the elephant in the room. The Bravia Theater Quad is physically different from any competing soundbar system on the market today. Instead of an ensemble built around a long, hefty soundbar with most of the systems drivers tucked inside, the Quad features four distinct speakers two accompanying your TV up front, and two filling out the rear of your listening space. Each of the four speakers are wall mountable, but will otherwise work best sitting on speaker stands, so be sure to factor that into how these fit into your room.SpecsPrice: $2,499.99Channels: 4.0.4Power: 504 watts, 16 total channelsDrivers: 16 total speakersConnections: HDMI eARC 2.1, Bluetooth 5.2 Audio formats: Stereo PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos (Dolby Digital Plus), Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos (True HD), Multichannel PCM, Dolby Multichannel PCM, DTS Digital SurroundThe previous version of the Quad, Sonys HT-A9, had a cylindrical look to its quartet of speakers. With the Quad, Sony opted for a flattened-out iteration that presents a far more sleek aesthetic that blended subtly into our living room. The drivers inside the enclosures are also new and improved, moving from a two-way design to a three-way setup that includes a dedicated woofer, midrange driver, and tweeter. Plus, each of the four Quad speakers has its own upfiring driver for Dolby Atmos content and other 3D formats. There is no included subwoofer in this system, which seems like a miss at this price point (and from a performance perspective more on that later). The good news is that the Quad is compatible with either of Sonys wireless subwoofers, the SA-SW3 or the larger SA-SW5, though that will cost you an extra $400-700 depending on which model you opt for. Additionally, each speaker in the Quad communicates with the systems control box, which connects to your TV via HDMI and only HDMI. If you have an older display that needs an optical connection, you are out of luck with the Quad.Setting the Quad up was just as simple as getting a soundbar system up and running. Each speaker needs to connect to a power outlet, and the control box needs that aforementioned HDMI connection to your TV or display. From there, though, the speakers automatically sync with each other. All thats left is to download the Bravia Connect app to adjust aspects of the system to your personal tastes. The only bothersome part of the set up for some may be finding spots to place each of the Quad speakers; you wont be able to put the front speakers on your TV stand like you would a soundbar, and if you dont have speaker stands, you may have to get a bit creative with placement. As Sonys flagship home theater system, the Quad has absolutely no shortage of features in store. It uses Sonys 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology to virtually place sound around your entire listening space, something well talk more about in a moment. It supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and 360 Reality Audio, and has streaming support for Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, and Bluetooth. Plus, when paired with a compatible Sony Bravia TV, the Quad can use its Acoustic Center Sync technology to outfit the TVs speakers to act as a center channel for the system. Theres tons more to explore in the realm of features including the Quads video format support for 4K HDR, 8K HDR, and Dolby Vision but weve buried the lede long enough. Lets dive into how the Quad sounds. Sony Bravia Theater Quad PerformanceI originally unboxed and set up the Bravia Theater Quad in my office, only to realize that this system needed a lot more room to breathe. So I relocated to my living room, which afforded the ability to properly place the system in the space the front speakers to the left and right of my TV, and the rear speakers at the back of the room. I set up the Quad in the Bravia Connect app, ran the speakers through the apps Sound Field Optimization feature (which adjusts the speakers to the environment theyre in), and went to work.Cards on the table: the Quad beats every soundbar system Ive ever heard. The three-way speakers are incredibly balanced and extremely detailed, and the soundstage that the system creates is absolutely unmatched. Part of it chalks up to being able to space out those front speakers to foster a wide, encompassing front stage, a feat that has proven far harder to achieve with soundbar systems. Perhaps the ace up the Quads sleeve, though, is the masterful way it virtually places sound. I watched The Worlds Greatest Beer Run which is starting to become a favorite for testing Dolby Atmos, both for its compelling audio mix and because Apple TV is one of the few remaining streaming services that doesnt reserve Atmos content for its highest-paying subscribers and was blown away by how the Quad adds three-dimensional sound to Chickie Donohues travels through the heart of the Vietnam War. Atmos aside, the Quad handles standard surround sound far better than every soundbar Ive tested. With four speakers and Sonys 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology, it uses the entire space to virtually send sound from movies like Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire all around you with powerful precision, with the sounds of the mega monsters brawling it out perfectly matching their path across the screen. Its hard to quantify with words, but its an experience that will change the way you think about surround sound. On the music side of things, I employed Spotify Connect, my wife, and a living room that now fully resembles a demo space to do a bit of a blind listening taste. Using Spotify, I asked Mrs. Woodard to close her eyes as I swapped between the Quad, the Sonos Arc Ultra, and my personal home theater system consisting of Fluance towers, a Yamaha receiver and a JL Audio subwoofer. I didnt tell her which was which, but instead auditioned tracks like Chris Stapletons Joy of My Life, Macklemores Good Old Days, and Jelly Rolls I Am Not Okay among other songs on all three systems in succession until she felt confident to try and identify each sound source. She got the Arc Ultra right, since its great, but more centralized sound sticks out compared to the other two. But she mistook the detailed, full sound of the Quads for our bulky tower speakers, and ultimately said that the Quads sound signature was above and away her favorite of the three.I tend to agree, with one caveat. The Quads big missing puzzle piece is bass. It tries, and earnestly so, but it falls significantly behind in the bass department to both the Sonos Arc Ultra and my personal home theater. A dedicated subwoofer would definitely fill the gap here, and the Quad is compatible with both Sonys SA-SW5 subwoofer and its smaller SA-SW3 counterpart. But that would mean a substantial added cost to a system thats already one of the most expensive routes you can take, leaving me to wonder why such a high-end option is notably incomplete.Purchasing GuideThe Sony Bravia Theater Quad retails for $2499.99 and can be found at Amazon and Best Buy.Sony Bravia Theater Quad The CompetitionFor as unique of a product as the Quad is, its a bit difficult to pin down who, exactly, this powerful lineup of speakers is standing against. Sony almost undoubtedly built the Quad to be a soundbar killer, and it wears that hat extremely well. I prefer the sound of the Quad to both the Sonos Arc Ultra and Samsung HW-Q990D, although the bars themselves are punching out of their weight class in this instance. I would wager to say that pairing a Sonos Sub 4 ($800) and a pair of Sonos Era 100 speakers ($470) to the $1000 Ultra would create a system that rivals the sound quality of the Quad and easily eclipse it in terms of bass. But for the sake of standalone systems? Its the Quad, and its not close.Sony may have another, slightly more unintended competitor in this space: the traditional home theater system. As a longtime fan of the old school home theater, complete with dedicated speakers, a receiver, and a subwoofer, I came into testing the Quad skeptical of its ability to justify its price, which (give or take) rivals the total cost of my own system. I left testing having told my wife that if we could commit to the Quad, I would happily sell off my theater system and get rid of the towers that may not be the most aesthetically pleasing part of our home decor. The Quad is that good, from the way it blends detailed vocals and impeccable instrumentals in music to the unmatched way it places sound in your space for movies and TV. Dont get me wrong, I love the sound of my system. But it simply cannot do what the Quad is capable of. If Sony added a subwoofer output to its control box to allow folks to use their own subwoofer, I would be selling my speakers as we speak.

HP just added the option to add the GeForce RTX 5090 GPU as an upgrade to one of its flagship HP Omen 45L prebuilt gaming PCs and, fortunately, it is very reasonably priced for a prebuilt RTX 5090 desktop relative to what we've seen from other brands. Put your order in sooner than later because, unless HP has readily available 5090 GPUs in its inventory (unlikely), these prebuilts will probably have a bit of a lead time before they ship out.Preorder the HP Omen 45L RTX 5090 Prebuilt Gaming PCFirst Configurable HP Omen 45L RTX 5090 Prebuilt Gaming PCMust upgrade CPU, RAM, SSD, GPU, and Power Supply$4,729.99 at HPFollow these instructions you must add these upgrades to proceed to cart:Click HereSelect Graphics Card - Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 (+$1,750)Select Processor - Intel Core Ultra 9 285K (+$170)Select Memory - Kingston Fury 64GB DDR5-5600 (+$210)Select Storage - 2 TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD (+$200)Select Chassis & Power Supply - Front Bezel Black Glass and 1200W PSU (+$100)Proceed to shopping cartYour total should be $4,729.99 shipped (plus taxes)The RTX 5090 Is the Most Powerful Graphics Card EverThe Nvidia 50-series GPUs were officially announced at CES 2025. The emphasis for this round of cards has been on the new and improved AI features over hardware-based raster performance. DLSS 4 technology supposedly quadruples the number of frames with minimal visual compromise. These new GPUs do offer a modest performance boost, but opinions are mixed regarding their value for PC gamers relative to the previous generation RTX 40-series cards. In our Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 FE review, Jackie Thomas wrote that "the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 has officially taken the performance crown from the RTX 4090, but with less force than previous generations. When it comes to traditional non-AI gaming performance, the RTX 5090 provides one of the smallest generational uplifts in recent memory. However, in games that support it, DLSS 4 really does deliver huge performance gains you just have to make your peace with the fact that 75% of the frames are generated with AI."PlayWhy Should You Trust IGN's Deals Team?IGN's deals team has a combined 30+ years of experience finding the best discounts in gaming, tech, and just about every other category. • Pokmon Horizons: Season 2 The Search for Laqua Review
    www.ign.com
The first season of Pokmon Horizons felt like a fresh start, a fun new frontier for a franchise well into its third decade of existence. With its second season, subtitled The Search for Laqua, Pokmon Horizons chickens out on committing to those changes and reverts to the old formula. While moments of humor, adventure, and heartwarming triumph break through, the result is largely disappointing and, in its noisy English-language dub, often a pain to the ears.Initially, Pokmon Horizons saw child protagonists Liko, Roy, and Dot journeying on an airship with its adult crew. They were seeking to understand the truth behind some mysterious relics, powerful enough that a rival team constantly pursued them. The airship truly felt like an exciting new frontier for Pokmon anime. It was the series equivalent of spending most of a video game traversing on foot and then suddenly well, getting an airship. But now, the airship is broken. Both the crew and the rival organization, the Explorers, are temporarily scattered. The kids are back in school. The Search for Laqua flips season 1's priorities, and Pokmon Horizons is worse for it. Instead of hunting down clues and training along the way, Liko and company are now training so that they can return to solving the core mystery down the road. And theyve enrolled in the most confounding school in the world, the Naranja Academy, in which Liko, Roy, and Dot are seemingly the only pupils in any given class. After a single day at Naranja, theyre sent off to journey across Paldea by twilight. Granted, the final two episodes of season 2 take place at the academy, but theyre just capstone battles. Not content with ditching one unique premise (at least for now), Horizons backs out of another, failing to fully explore what a Pokmon classroom drama could be.Happy Bday Pokmon Red & BlueAnd so, by episode 2, we have three teens traveling across the earth, endeavoring to become the best Pokmon trainers they can be by seeking out gym leaders. Occasionally, they come face-to-face with a villainous, male-female duo. Sound familiar? But that duo Cornbread and Seasoning, who are actually members of the Explorers fails to fulfill their promise. We barely see them after episode two. They dont have a chance to strike up any chemistry with our Pokmon-training heroes, to the point where I wondered why theyre part of the story at all.The Search for Laqua flips season ones priorities, and Pokmon Horizons is worse for it.There are ways that The Search for Laqua changes up the Pokmon formula. Likos Sprigatito the cute, curious feline who serves as Horizons primary Pokmon pal has evolved into the ninja-like Floragato. After years of Ashs Pikachu not evolving, one would think embracing this change would feel more exciting. While Floragatos Naruto run is amusing, trading an energetic little troublemaker for a distant, moody teen with a yo-yo is a major downgrade. But it doesnt have to be: Episode six puts some focus on the changing relationship between Liko and Floragato, specifically on how Floragato has become a reluctant babysitter who doesnt often get the attention it needs. This sincere subplot is one of the highlights of this batch of episodes.Such emotional honesty is Horizons secret weapon, and there are definitely moments where its expertly deployed. Dots struggles with her relationship to being filmed, and under what conditions, are engaging and relatable. Roy and his Fuecoco remain a delight, and any time Fuecoco uses Charming Voice is inherently funny. But these moments largely feel like they arise in spite of the overall direction of the English-language dub.During season 2 s first episode in particular, every character feels like theyre screaming. No character can finish their lines without another chiming in. The result is 20-odd minutes that feel like a deeply unpleasant vocal stampede. Fortunately, subsequent episodes chill out a bit. But theres still a feeling that no space, breath, or pause can be allowed.Pokmon is for kids, one might argue. Childrens media is loud and frantic. Except that we currently live in the age of Bluey, a childrens show defined as much by its gentleness as its wit and charm. Theres even a counterpoint to this notion within the Pokmon universe: The stop-motion Pokmon Concierge is a perfect nugget of a show that takes a Pixar-like approach of simultaneously holding its adult and child audiences in mind. What we said about Pokemon Horizons Season 1PlayPokmon Horizons is no Pokmon Concierge, and it very much has the energy of a childrens action-adventure series its the new mainline Pokmon show, so what can you expect? But with a delightful cast of new Pokmon (especially the grass cat and the screaming gator ball), a new mystery-driven plot, and a cast of characters with room to grow, at least the post-Ash era is off to a promising start. Kirsten CareyScore: 6Read the complete Pokmon Horizons: The Series Season 1 Review.Pokmon Horizons doesnt have to be like this. The Japanese version of season 2 which is not viewable in North America by legal means doesnt barrage its audiences quite as heavily as its English equivalent. In fact, the Japanese version can feel like an entirely different show and one I would give a higher score. As with Horizons first season, the sub and dub dont just differ in their voice performances, but in their music, too. Some of it stays in the English dub, but Japanese audiences are treated to a wider emotional variety in the score, plus more soaring, moving orchestral versions of familiar Pokmon themes. It all comes down to how the sound is mixed for each version: The Japanese Horizons audio prioritizes the music, while the English version puts the dialogue up top. This is why the episodes now streaming on Netflix so often feel like theyre screaming at you. They also feel subjected to multiple outdated interpretations of what people want from Pokmon, and who wants it in the first place. If this show is for kids, why do the new opening and ending riff so heavily on 1980s nostalgia? That being said, the new theme song, My Favorite Pokmon, is arguably the best part of The Search for Laqua particularly the instrumental version that plays over the end credits. With its Daft Punk-esque bassline, its a bonafide banger.Pokmon Horizons doesnt have to be like this. Its not all bad: When The Search for Laqua returns to the mystery-building of season 1, it restores some of the series lost luster. The seasons best episode focuses on one of the adult characters: airship commander Friede, who returns to the offices of an old corporate job to dig up some dirt. And Dots weariness of a mysterious teacher in the closing moments of the final episodes set up one of the seasons most interesting dynamics. All Horizons needs to do is commit to its own premise. If Sprigatito can evolve, so can the cornerstone Pokmon dub.

  • Assassin's Creed Shadows Players Won't Be 'Missing Out' If They Largely Ignore One Protagonist
    www.ign.com
Ubisoft has assured that Assassin's Creed Shadows players who largely ignore one of the dual protagonists won't be "missing out."Creative director Jonathan Dumont told Screen Rant said Assassin's Creed Shadows won't force players to play as both the stealthy Naoe and the brutish Yasuke in equal measure when it arrives March 20, nor will it lock off certain parts of the game to those who prefer one over the other."I don't think you're missing out on things too much," Dumont said. "I think it's more on your preference to [say], 'Okay, I'll see how the game will adapt a little bit to the character if you choose one over the other.'"They get individual introductions and then they get their own questline also. Let's say [for] Naoe, a personal questline cannot be played by Yasuke and those are two distinct things. But the core of the game can be pick your character and the game adapts."Naoe has a play style reminiscent of the original Assassin's Creed games or, ironically, the most recent Assassin's Creed Mirage, which prioritises stealth and encourages full combat only as a last resort. This is a stark difference to Yasuke who emulates the more aggressive elements of the role-playing game Assassin's Creed entries, meaning Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla. He charges head on into battle instead of sticking to the shadows like Naoe."We're not imposing players try to split the time," Dumont said. "If you prefer one character for any reason, you can play maybe, I don't know, I'm not going to put a percentage, but quite a bit of the game using one of them."But if you want to balance it out... I play quite a bit balanced out and what happens is, I play with one for three, four, five hours, and then I switch, and then I just play two, three hours. Usually I play stealth and then I [say], 'All right, let me destroy some camps and stuff all right for a while.' And then I just change like that."A lot rests on the shoulders of Assassin's Creed Shadows as not only the long-awaited Japan-set entry and the first full Assassin's Creed since 2020, but a struggling Ubisoft needs it to perform well following recent flops and investor frustration. It's not enjoyed a particularly positive promotional period so far, however, with the development team having to apologize on separate occasions for inaccuracies in Assassin's Creed Shadows' depictions of Japan and using a historical recreation group's flag without permission.Yet another controversy came as collectible figure maker PureArts removed an Assassin's Creed Shadows statue from sale over its "insensitive" design, and combined with the two delays, fans are growing increasingly impatient as a result.Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. • The Witchers Doug Cockle on Becoming Netflixs Latest Geralt
    www.ign.com
While Henry Cavill may be the most famous actor to have played Geralt of Rivia, hes not the first name many will think of when discussing The Witcher. Certainly amongst the gaming community, Doug Cockle the voice of Geralt in CD Projekt Reds series of critically acclaimed RPGs is considered the original and ultimate white wolf. But the paths of Cavill and Cockles Geralts have now merged, with Cockle bringing his unmistakable voice to Netflixs interpretation of the character in the new animated movie, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. While hes not playing the same version of Geralt who appears in the games, Cockle was not asked to alter his performance to sound more like or include the mannerisms of Henry Cavill or Liam Hemsworth, who replaces Cavill as Geralt in the next season of the live-action show. This creative decision meant Cockle was able to draw upon the same method and approach that created the unmistakably gravelly tones of his Geralt of Rivia. And so youll still hear the same voice youve known and loved for nearly 20 years. PlayCockle formulated that voice back in 2005 when recording dialogue for the first Witcher video game. The thing I found most challenging about recording Witcher 1 was actually the voice itself, Cockle recalls. When I first started recording the game, (Geralts) voice was very, very far down in my register. It was something I had to push towards. At the time there was little guidance as to how long voice actors should spend recording in a single session, and so Cockle was spending eight or nine hours per day delivering that gravelly voice. I was going back to my hotel just going, Wow, my throat is ripped, he recalls. The struggle continued into the recording of The Witcher 2 a few years later, but Cockles vocal chords eventually strengthened and began attuned to what was required of them a process he sheepishly likens to an athlete's muscles getting into shape. As soon as The Last Wish came out in English, I tore through it.Cockles vocal chords adapting to better support Geralts voice wasnt the only major change that happened during the development of the second game, though. The books started to come out in English while I was recording Witcher 2, he explains. Before that, it was the developers from CD Projekt Red who taught me everything I needed to know about Geralt. So as soon as The Last Wish came out in English, I was down at the bookstore buying it, and I tore through it. And I understood things about Geralt just from reading just that one book that I didn't understand at all before. The developers kept saying, He's emotionless, Cockle says. And I was like, Okay, I get it, I get it, but I'm an actor. I want to play with emotions. But I better understood [when reading] the book why they were pushing for as flat as possible of an emotional life for him.Doug Cockle's Geralt appears alongside Joey Batey's Jaskier and other members of the Netflix cast. | Image credit: NetflixCockle immediately fell in love with the books, noting that author Andrzej Sapkowski is such a wonderful writer. Having grown up on Tolkiens The Lord of the Rings, Cockle quickly forged a connection with this new fantasy universe. Of all Sapkowskis novels, he most fondly remembers Season of Storms. Its a story hed love to be a part of, should Netflix ever need a voice for Geralt again. It's one of those stories that when I read it, I was like, Oh, this is horrible. This is awful. [But] it's thrilling at the same time, he says. There's some really graphic fight scenes that Sapkowski gives to us, and I think that would be a really fun story to turn into an anime or a TV episode.I enjoy the gravitas of Geralt when he's all serious and mopey and whatever, but I do also like those moments when he's trying to be light.Maybe well see that story in the future, but right now Dougs Geralt can be seen and heard in Sirens of the Deep, Netflixs latest animated Witcher adventure. Based on the short story A Little Sacrifice from the Sword of Destiny collection, its a dark and twisted interpretation of Hans Christian Andersens The Little Mermaid. After a mermaid and a human prince fall in love, Geralt finds himself caught up in a conflict between two very different kingdoms. But while theres plenty of blood-splattering action and serious political drama, its the storys lighter moments that interest Cockle the most. He notes a humorous conversation between Geralt and Jaskier, where both are sitting around a campfire after a long day, as a good example of that lightness. The scene demonstrates Geralts softer side, which is often overlooked as an important part of the monster hunters personality. Part of liking acting is liking all those different aspects of a character's personality and the different choices that could be made and how they might approach those choices, Cockle explains. I enjoy the gravitas of Geralt when he's all serious and mopey and whatever, but I do also like those moments when he's trying to be light. When he's trying to crack a joke and it just doesn't go very well for him most of the time because he's just not funny. The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep Geeked Week 2024 Teaser StillsWhile much of Cockles work on Sirens of the Deep simply required him to use a voice thats become second nature, the anime did pose a unique challenge: learning how to speak mermaid. Yes, for the first time in his career, Cockle had to perform in a fictional language. I found doing this really difficult, he confesses. I got phonetic spellings of the words and things so I could get familiar with it and hopefully be okay on the day. And then I got in front of the mic and it wasn't like performance anxiety or anything like that, it's just that it was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. Things should be much easier when Cockle returns to the world of video games in The Witcher 4, which was revealed with an exciting trailer at The Game Awards last year. Returning to his original version of Geralt should be like putting on an old pair of favourite slippers. Even easier, actually, because he wont have to record anywhere near the amount of dialogue that he did for the previous three games. This time around Geralt is set to be a supporting character in a story that puts Ciri, his adoptive daughter, in the protagonist role. PlayNaturally, Cockle has little to say about The Witcher 4. He claims to only know as much about it as we do. But hes eager to see what happens in CDPRs next chapter of The Witcher story, and thinks it's already headed in the right direction. I think it's a really good move, he says of switching the storys perspective from Geralt to Ciri. I mean, I always thought that continuing the saga, but shifting to Ciri would be a really, really interesting move for all kinds of reasons, but mostly because of things that happen in the books, which I don't want to give away because people, I want people to go read. So yeah, I think it's really exciting. I can't wait. I can't wait to see what they've done.To learn more about what CD Projekt Red is planning, take a look at our in-depth interview with the creators of The Witcher 4. And to see more of Doug Cockle, be sure to watch The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep on Netflix, or find him on Instagram, Cameo, and X. Matt Purslow is IGN's Senior Features Editor.

  • Captain America: Brave New World Is the Start of Avengers 2.0
    www.ign.com
It has been almost six years since the Avengers broke up following the defeat of Thanos and the death of Tony Stark. But it was only a matter of time until the world needed its mightiest heroes once again. With new Avengers movies coming in 2026 and 2027, the MCU needs to reassemble the team pretty quickly. Thankfully, the first step in recruiting the next version of the Avengers begins in Captain America: Brave New World. We know people miss the Avengers and we miss the Avengers, says Nate Moore, a veteran producer at Marvel Studios and one of the guiding hands behind the fourth Captain America film. But we knew if we jumped right back into the Avengers after Endgame, we wouldn't give people a chance to miss it. Moore notes that the very best Avengers teams across the history of Marvel comics have had Captain America at the centre. And so after Steve Rogers handed his shield over to Sam Wilson at the end of Avengers: Endgame, the MCU had to spend time building Wilson up into the kind of leader he needed to be. That takes time, in part because Wilson did not take to the role of Captain America easily. The six-part Disney+ show, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, explored his struggles with that transition. Thankfully, by the events of Brave New World, Wilson wears the red, white and blue with pride. But just as he has overcome the challenge of becoming Captain America, hes presented with a whole new, more daunting task: to become the leader of a new Avengers team. PlayAs revealed in a pre-release marketing clip, Brave New Worlds opening act sees President Ross (played by Harrison Ford, who takes over from the late William Hurt) ask Wilson to restart the Avengers project. Long-term fans may understandably be a little confused by this. Thaddeus Thunderbolt Ross is the man who established the Sokovia Accords, the superhero registration act that caused a civil war. So why would the man infamous for splitting up the Avengers want to see them reassembled? He was a guy who had this real legacy that could maybe be defined by his anger, agrees Brave New Worlds director, Julius Onah. But the man that we're meeting now is a man who is an elder statesman, who's a diplomat, who's turning a new leaf, who sees and understands the errors of his past and wants to do better. [He wants to initiate] the Avengers because they could be a benefit to the world. Ross is a general, so certainly he understands what a tactical advantage is.Of course, President Ross doesnt plan to recreate the Avengers exactly as they once were. As we saw in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Captain America is now an official United States government role. And in the opening of Brave New World, Wilson is working directly with the President. All this means that a Captain America-led Avengers team would also effectively be a branch of the US defence department. Ross is the man who passed the Sokovia Accords, says Moore. He certainly realized that the Avengers left unchecked may not be the best idea for anyone. And so I certainly think he understands that power is more beneficial to him if it's under his command, and he figures why not do it first before somebody beats me to the punch.Sam Wilson must now step up to Captain America's ultimate responsibility: leading the Avengers. | Image credit: Disney / Marvel StudiosBut President Ross presumably isnt interested in reassembling the Avengers because he knows theyre needed for a couple of films in the future. The more likely explanation for Ross sudden interest in a superhero team is the discovery of a world-changing substance. Remember the Celestial that was turned to stone at the end of Eternals? Well, as revealed at San Diego Comic Con 2024, the MCUs scientists have discovered its a source of Adamantium, Marvels best-known super metal and a precious alternative to Wakandas heavily-defended Vibranium. With this miracle metal just sitting out there in the ocean, its open season for every nation on earth. So if theres about to be an Adamantium arms race, it makes sense to have a few superheroes on your side.I think certainly any nation that has a group of Avengers has a leg up over anyone else, says Moore. And Ross is a general, so certainly he understands what a tactical advantage is!How Sam Wilson/Falcon Became Captain America in the ComicsIf there is an underlying motive to this new Avengers team, it means that the working relationship between President Ross and Sam Wilsons Captain America isnt likely to be smooth sailing. Not that this was going to be an easy partnership to begin with, of course. Steve Rogers was resolutely anti-government control, and Wilson has spent his entire superhero career trying to live up to his predecessors values. I really focused on the emotional journey that Sam was taking, says Onah. It was really cool to then put him opposite somebody who had divided the Avengers in the past. Because of that history, Sam was put into prison. The Sokovia Accords, all the stuff that Ross pushed forward as Secretary of State [came into play]. These are things that when these two men walk into a room, that tension between them is palpable. Perhaps it will be Walker and his morally-flexible companions who actually become the Presidents Avengers. Ross nickname is Thunderbolt, after all.All that considered, its very possible that Sam Wilson is not the man President Ross is looking for. And so who will run this government-owned and operated Avengers team if not Captain America? The answer may lie in 2025s second MCU project, Thunderbolts, which arrives just a few months after Brave New World. Thunderbolts features a rag-tag team of anti-heroes including John Walker, the man who took up the mantle of Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier only to violently disgrace the legacy Steve Rogers left behind. Perhaps it will be Walker and his morally-flexible companions who actually become the Presidents Avengers, then. Ross nickname is Thunderbolt, after all.If thats how things play out, Wilson would be free to set up his own, independent team of superheroes, just in time for the imminent arrival of Robert Downey Jr.s Doctor Doom in 2026s Avengers: Doomsday. But regardless of the details, Brave New World acts as the next step on the road that Wilson began the moment he took up the shield: the inevitable path to becoming the leader of the Avengers. Knowing that this would be the first movie to deal with the assembly of the next Avengers team, Onah was excited to get Wilson ready for what lies ahead. Historically the Avengers have been led by a Captain America, and Sam Wilson is very much so a worthy one, Onah says. But part of telling this story is also reinforcing, illustrating, and dramatizing for an audience: why [is he worthy]? PlayThat worthiness comes from Wilsons empathy, which Onah describes as the characters superpower. As any MCU fan knows, Wilson is simply just a man with a shield and a pair of mechanical wings. And sure, he can punch and kick pretty well. But it's his ability to understand the perspective of his allies and enemies that allows him to wield the shield specifically, the values that disc of Vibranium represents with effectiveness. I think that's what makes him a Captain America of this moment, Onah says.I don't think Sam would be prepared to lead the Avengers until he truly believed that he was Captain America, Moore adds. And our goal as filmmakers was to take him on a journey of questioning whether or not he made the right decision. Hopefully by the end, [well have] him and the audience go There certainly could be no one else. He is Captain America, and hopefully he takes the tools from this movie to be able to lead the Avengers.Wilson will need to get a move on. After Brave New World, only two movies stand between us and Avengers: Doomsday. And so it seems likely that Captain America will make appearances in both Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four: First Steps as he attempts to recruit his team ahead of 2026s big event. Its certainly a much shorter road than the five films that led into 2012s The Avengers, but hopefully the likes of Spider-Man, Thor, and Bruce Banner are just waiting for the call, anyway. Whatever the case, the assembly of Avengers 2.0 begins here. Matt Purslow is IGN's Senior Features Editor.
