• Eating Seaweed Could Make Cows Less Gassy, Slashing Methane Emissions From Grazing by Nearly 40 Percent
    www.smithsonianmag.com
Grazing cows produce more methane than feedlot cows because of the fiber content of the grass they consume. PexelsCows are a gassy bunch. As they stand in fields and munch on grass, the animals burp and fartand, in doing so, they release billions of pounds of heat-trapping methane gas into the atmosphere. In total, the livestock industry is responsible for between 11.1 and 19.6 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, and cow belching is the biggest contributor to that number. Now, another study is pointing the way toward an emerging solution: seaweed pellets. When grazing beef cattle were fed seaweed supplements, their methane emissions dropped by nearly 40 percent. And this change in diet had no apparent effects on the animals weight or health, researchers report in a new study published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Previous research has shown that seaweed helps cut methane emissionsin feedlot cattle and dairy cows. But the new paper is the first to demonstrate the effects among grazing beef cattle, which produce more methane than feedlot cattle and dairy cows because of the high fiber content of the grass they eat.To test the effects of seaweed, scientists conducted a ten-week experiment at Matador Ranch in Dillon, Montana. They divided 24 young, neutered, male beef steerswhich were a mix of Angus and Wagyu breedsinto two groups. While the cattle were grazing in fields, researchers offered one group pellets containing seaweed (Asparagopsis taxiformis), which the steers ate voluntarily. Researchers dispensed the pellets using solar-powered machines that also measured how much methane the cows produced. The other group of cattle did not have access to the seaweed pellets. The seaweed-eating group produced 37.7 percent less methane, on average, than the control group did. Considering the substantial contribution of ruminant livestock to global greenhouse gas emissions this research offers a promising avenue for mitigating climate change, according to the paper. On a ranch in Montana, researchers used this solar-powered equipment to dispense seaweed pellets and measure methane emissions. Paulo de Mo Filho / UC DavisIn the real world, farmers and ranchers have different options for serving seaweed to their grazing cattle. They could offer them pellets, just like the researchers did in the study, or they could provide a seaweed-infused lick block, a small cube farmers set out so that their livestock get all the salt and minerals they need to thrive. As it stands now, ranchers already supplement the diets of their grazing cattle during winters or when grass is not availableso incorporating seaweed should be relatively straightforward, researchers say. This method paves the way to make a seaweed supplement easily available to grazing animals, says study co-author Ermias Kebreab, an animal scientist at the University of California, Davis, in a statement.Cow farts and burps both release methane into the atmosphere. But the burps are the worst offenders, responsible for producing the majority of cattle-emitted methane, according to NASA.Why do cows belch up so much methane? The answer lies in their unique anatomy. Cattle are ruminants, a type of mammal that has four stomach chambers to help with digesting high-fiber foods. When they take a bite of grass and swallow, the fibrous plant matter enters the first stomach chamber, called the rumen.Inside the rumen, microbes break down the sugars in the grass via fermentation, a process that creates methane as a byproduct. This causes cows to burp, which sends the methane into the atmosphere.Seaweed, meanwhile, contains a compound called bromoform that blocks methane-producing enzymes in the rumen. This, in turn, reduces the amount of methane cows burp up.Earlier studies have found that seaweed can help reduce methane emissions by up to 82 percent in feedlot cattle and more than 50 percent in dairy cows.Researchers in Oregon are currently working on a similar experiment that also involves beef cattle. Their project is focused on cows that graze in sagebrush-steppe ecosystems and uses a different type of seaweed, called Pacific dulse, which is grown commercially on the states coast.Scientists involved in the Oregon study plan to feed varying amounts of seaweed to cattle, then track any corresponding changes to their methane outputs. They also plan to measure carbon levels in the soil. Their experiment will last five years and is being funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Our final and major goal is to be able to come up with some strategy for producers, says Juliana Ranches, an agricultural researcher at Oregon State University, to Oregon Public Broadcastings Alejandro Figueroa. [To say] hey, heres the seaweed. It really works, you need to feed it this amount. Heres how were going to suggest you feed it.Experts say reducing methane emissions from cattle is a key step toward achieving worldwide climate goals, because methane can trap 28 times more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide does. Methane is also the second most abundant greenhouse gas emitted by human-related activities. Starting in 2030, cattle farmers in Denmark will have to pay taxes on methane emissions from their livestock, as the country implements what is believed to be the worlds first tax on agricultural emissions.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.Filed Under: Agriculture, Animals, Cattle, Climate Change, Environment, Farming, Food, Global Warming, Innovations, New Research

  • This Mysterious Gold Pendant Featuring a Misspelled Inscription Is an Early Medieval Imitation of a Roman Coin
    www.smithsonianmag.com
The coin features the bust of Honorius on one side. The other side depicts a person holding abanner or flag with a cross on it. Andrew Williams / Norfolk County CouncilAbout two years ago, a metal detectorist unearthed a small gold pendant near the town of Attleborough in Norfolk, England. It was designed to look like a Roman coincalled a solidusthat had been introduced during the fourth century C.E.But the coin wasnt a real solidus. Instead, it turned out to be an imitation of a Roman coin, as Live Sciences Hannah Kate Simon reports. Dating to the late fifth or early sixth century C.E., it was made by the group sometimes known as the Anglo-Saxons.Because the pendant features a gold loop attached to the top, historians think it was meant to be worn as jewelry, not used as currency. This makes it very unusual, Adrian Marsden, a numismatist with the Norfolk County Councils Identification and Recording Service, tells BBC News Katy Prickett. We see Roman gold coins being repurposed as pendants, occasionally with very similar suspension loops, but here they've made the whole thing from scratch, he adds. One side of the pendant features the bust of Honorius, the Roman emperor who ruled from 393 to 423 C.E. Hes shown wearing chest armor and a pearl diadem. The other side depicts a person holding a banner or flag with a cross on it.The actual Roman solidus bore the phrase RESTITVTOR REIPVBLICAE, which translates to Restorer of the Republic. However, on the imitation pendant, its misspelled as STITVTOR EIPVBLICAE. Marsden tells Live Science that these mistakes may not have mattered to the items creators, who probably werent trying to create an exact replica.Typos aside, the pendant is also unusual for another reason: Its creators were likely pagans. Despite their beliefs, they chose to copy a coin from a period when Christianity was the official religion of the Roman Empire. Its slightly ironic, Marsden tells BBC News. These people are definitely not Christian, yet they are copying a Christian image. But why did these craftsmen make the pendant in the first place? During this period, the Anglo-Saxons were starting to conquer present-day Englandand they may have been taking inspiration from the regions previous rulers, Marsden tells Live Science. England was part of the Roman Empire between roughly 43 and 410 C.E. The pendant demonstrates a desire to plug into this vanished age, he adds. The coin has been deemed a treasure, a protected status given to artifacts of historical significance discovered in the United Kingdom. Typically, coins are considered treasures when they are at least 30 years old and made of materials like gold or silver.Such artifacts cannot be sold to private bidders; instead, cultural institutions are given the chance to purchase them for their collections. According to BBC News, a museum will likely acquire the gold pendant.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.Filed Under: Ancient Rome, Archaeology, Artifacts, British History, Coins, Cool Finds, England, European History, Gold, History, Jewelry, Medieval Ages, Roman Empire

  • Ubisoft shooter XDefiant is shutting down and sending refunds to players
    www.theverge.com
Despite only officially launching the game in spring of this year, Ubisoft has already announced that its ending development and sunsetting its free-to-play team-based shooter XDefiant. Like Hyper Scape before it, XDefiant had high expectations, with Ubisoft touting more than 1 million players in its closed beta last year. Now, it will disappear quickly, as its no longer accepting new players as of today and is scheduled to shut off the servers entirely next June.Despite a delayed launch, Ubisoft said that XDefiant had reached more than 10 million players in its first two weeks and outperformed expectations thanks to acquisition and strong average revenue per session day. However, it couldnt maintain that momentum, and by this fall, rumors of trouble surfaced, with Insider Gaming reporting that concurrent player numbers across all platforms had fallen below 20,000.RelatedUbisoft states, The game will remain available to all players who joined XDefiant before December 3rd, 2024. All functionalities, including progression, events, rewards, and achievements, will continue to be available until June 3rd, 2025. The planned Season 3 content will still launch, and the company is refunding anyone who bought the Ultimate Founders Pack, as well as players who bought VC and DLC in the last month.Like with Concord developer Firewalk Studios, this shutdown comes with job losses. According to Ubisoft, difficult consequences are leading to the closing of our San Francisco and Osaka production studios and to the ramp down of our Sydney production site, with 143 people departing in San Francisco and 134 people likely to depart in Osaka and Sydney.
