• Godzillas Bringing His Brand of Radioactive Chaos to Marvel Comics
    gizmodo.com
Yknow, it wasnt that long ago Marvel had variant covers featuring Godzilla going up against the likes of the Avengers and Spider-Man. Tohos big lizard will duke it out with anyone these days, no matter how big they are. So you wont be surprised those covers were a prelude to him actually coming to ruin the days of Marvels A-list superheroes. On Thursday, the Hollywood Reporter unveiled Godzilla vs. Marvel, the publishers first crossover with the character since 1977s Godzilla, King of the Monsters. This new event is a series of one-shots wherein the King will face off against (or team up with) various Marvel heroes across the decades. First up is Ryan North and John Romita Jr.s tale of a meeting with the Fantastic Four, who fight King Ghidorah after he becomes Galactus new Herald. While the Four face the new cosmic dragon, Godzilla and the Silver Surfer must team up to save the planet. According to Marvel EiC C.B. Cebulski, the company initially talked with Toho about reprinting those old comics, but talks eventually made it clear both of our teams were excited to do more together. These crossovers started coming together, in direct collaboration with Toho, and we felt the perfect time for them was for Godzillas 70th anniversary. As Marvels comics/franchise president Dan Buckley noted, Godzillas become pretty popular lately thanks to Godzilla Minus Oneand the American-made MonsterVerse movies, so Marvel couldnt not get in on thatand should this be a hit, Cebulski said Marvel would be more than happy to team with Toho on more exciting projects.Marvel Comics Kaijuand specifically Godzillaare important parts of Marvels comic history, so we knew we wanted to explore something with their teams, said Buckley. Its part of our current cultural zeitgeist and a perfect example of the fun that the comics industry can bring. Were focused on the storytelling first and foremost, but fun opportunities for crossovers like this give both of our fans an entertaining escape that they wont want to miss. Godzilla vs. Fantastic Fourkicks things off in March 2025. Future issues and their creators will be revealed at a later date. Want more io9 news? • Leigh Whannell Unpacks Wolf Mans Horrific Influences
    gizmodo.com
AfterInvisible Man andAbigail,Universals got another modern take on one of its classic monsters hitting theaters. While its taken some time to craft Leigh Whannells Wolf Man,its getting here in about a month, and a new behind the scenes video digs into the films many inspirations. In the featurette, Whannell readily admits to using the film to explore infection and transformation, themes that have been at the heart of werewolf stories. But his spin has some extra weight: he wrote the script in 2020 during the early pandemic days, so the film cant help but also be about how sicknesses elicit feelings of isolation, dread, and anxiety. Blake, our eventual Wolf Man played by Christopher Abbott, gets attacked by a werewolf and gradually morphs into the monster as his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) and daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth) can only watch as it happensat least until its time for them to spend the rest of the night running awayfrom him. On a simliar note, the director considersWolf Mana tribute to two of his favorite 80s body horror films,The ThingandTheFly. Those movies also explore the fear of someone becoming (or being near) something uncontrollable and dangerous. Its a slightly different track for Whannell, whos been in the horror game ever since the original Saw,but moves like Insidious and Upgrade focus on the terror of demonic posessions or evil, manipulative beingse. He very much likes using horror to really dig deep into someones subconscious, and with Wolf Man,hes aiming to provide an aural assault and deliver something horrific and visceral to audiences. Well see if his bite is as scary as his bark seems when Wolf Manhits theaters on January 17, 2025. Want more io9 news? The project involved renovating a 60-year-old commercial building to incorporate a new function as a two-story caf. The ground floor serves as a coffee shop, while the second floor is a Japanese restaurant.Save this picture!Save this picture! The original building was a traditional shophouse with a solid, enclosed structure lacking natural light. The design challenge was to transform the space from its original confined and dark atmosphere into a refreshing, open environment.Save this picture! To achieve this, the designers removed the second-floor rear balcony, previously used as a laundry area, creating a vertical void that allows a clear view of the sky. This intervention also paved the way for a small garden at the back, introducing natural elements and light into the previously dense structure.Save this picture! The renovation adopts a loft-style design, which retains and highlights the essence of the old building's charm while breathing new life into the space. The result is a revitalized structure that offers a fresh perspective, blending the old and new in harmony. This thoughtful approach not only preserves the historic character of the building but also reimagines its purpose for modern use, offering patrons a unique and inspiring setting to enjoy their coffee and meals.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Mueang Ubon Ratchathani District, Ubon Ratchathani 34000, ThailandLocation to be used only as a reference. Nestled within Tunisia's premier business district, Les Berges du Lac 2, this edifice fully capitalizes on its prime location, situated at the heart of the country's economic and financial activities, making it an ideal choice for businesses eager to thrive in this dynamic environment.Save this picture! The design of "The Screen" posed a significant challenge for architects, who were tasked with making the most of a strategically located plot that could house a new urban landmark for the city. The objective was clear: to create a functional and iconic space that would attract tenants, visitors, and passersby while meeting contemporary standards of sustainability and comfort.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The project's office-oriented purpose, decided by the client, aimed to optimize the accommodation of future businesses. The major challenge was to reinvent office space to anticipate future developments. Thus, the building's architecture needed to incorporate essential features. The structural system of the project was at the core of its design.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The floors are defined by a repetitive grid of 5.5m x 5.5m, with flat beams that do not protrude, offering great flexibility for technical systems and interior layouts. The project's mass spans 16 meters in width, divided into three grids of varying heights. The central grid, primarily for circulation, houses all technical equipment, freeing up the maximum height for the grids facing the faades. This arrangement favors an abundance of natural light, thereby boosting productivity and the well-being of occupants. In Tunisia, where the number of sunny days is high, "The Screen" maximizes this energy resource through large windows adapted to the building's orientations. High-performance solar and thermal glazing has been selected to create a bright and comfortable work environment.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The project includes two basements dedicated to parking and technical spaces, as well as ten office floors connected by six panoramic elevators, offering occupants constant views of the urban environment. The top of "The Screen" is crowned by a rooftop with relaxation and dining areas, featuring a terrace that offers a 360 panoramic view of Tunis. This facility aims to combine relaxation and leisure for users.Save this picture!Aesthetically, the building has been meticulously sculpted. The main entrance, marked by an imposing glass structure, is backed by a double-inclined reinforced concrete wall clad in fluorescent yellow HPL panels. This hue, rarely used in local architecture, gives the project a unique and stimulating identity. Covered by the same fluorescent yellow panels, a distinctive structural element juts out from the main faade in a cantilever, housing an olive tree, paying homage to Tunisia's agricultural heritage and adding a touch of greenery to the composition.Save this picture! The building's exterior walls, made of double-layered thermal bricks locally produced with central rock wool insulation, reference Mediterranean architecture while being energy-efficient. Painted white, they seamlessly blend into the Tunisian architectural landscape. "The Screen" transforms the workspace by emphasizing openness, natural light, and the well-being of its occupants. This project embodies innovation and represents a notable advancement in office architecture in Tunisia.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Tunis, TunisiaLocation to be used only as a reference.
