  • The Ultra-Slim iPhone Air Is A Bendgate Disaster Waiting To Happen All Over Again
    www.yankodesign.com
They say people who dont understand history are doomed to repeat it. I feel like were about to watch the most spectacular tech dj vu of all time this year. Were rumored to see Apple launch a Slim version of the iPhone come September, with YouTuber Jon Prosser confidently revealing a fairly fleshed-out design of what the phone will look like. Earlier, Prosser mentioned that this phone would be given the Air moniker as opposed to Slim, which we all were using earlier. The reason? Air is a suffix that Apples used extensively with its iPad and MacBook line, indicating thinner, sleeker models. If Apple intends to launch a thinner, sleeker iPhone, chances are itll rely on the Air term that its popularized over the years. But heres the glaring problem with a slim iPhone its prone to bending and even snapping in half. That isnt speculation, it literally happened in 2014 when the iPhone 6 debuted. It was perhaps the biggest crisis Apple faced after Jobs passed, and it got to a point where people would just walk into Apple stores and bend the phones just to see if the rumor was actually true. It was the phones thin design and aluminum outer chassis were really prone to just folding in half. Lewis Hilsenteger of Unbox Therapy first broke the news, showing how the iPhone 6 curved in his pocket when he sat down. It needed no extra force, just the act of sitting down with the phone in your pocket. Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything proceeded to test this theory, practically breaking the phone in half with just his bare hands.Multiple rumors from very credible sources are indicating that Apple will launch its Air iPhone this year, with indications that it will also discontinue its Plus range to keep SKUs at current amounts. Samsung debuted the Edge variant of its Galaxy phones at Unpacked this year too, mirroring how they pre-emptively launched the Galaxy Watch just months before Apple announced the Apple Watch. The Galaxy S25 Edge didnt completely debut either it was released with limited visibility, nobody was allowed to touch the handset, and Samsung refrained from teasing any specs, pricing, or launch date. In a lot of ways, this was Samsungs way of showing a thin-phone proof-of-concept without really allowing journalists to as much as hold the device. My journalistic suspicion tells me Samsung knew for a fact that the S25 Edge was possibly too fragile to be handled by the media.Rather than having a massive news cycle about a bendable Galaxy (following years of damage control after a flammable Galaxy), Samsung controlled the narrative simply by putting the phone behind a glass facade, far from human touch. Unless Apples devised a way to make razor-thin phones that simply dont bend, the iPhone Air faces the same fate as the iPhone 6, caving (or concaving) under the pressure of mild scrutiny. Why is Apple launching an iPhone Air? I have my reasons to believe that theyre looking to shake up their line-up which hasnt seen any solid innovation since the Dynamic Island. Is a slim iPhone the best idea? From a sheer breakability point, maybe not but heres my conspiracy theory the iPhone Air is just a precursor to a folding iPhone. Foldables need to be ridiculously slim when unfolded (so that theyre a maximum of 11-12mm thick when shut), which is why Apples building the Air first, to stress-test the hardware before debuting the folding iPhone. The iPhone Air is rumored to launch this year, although nobodys really sure of what its price point would be. With its single-lens camera system, it would be pretty unwise to price it at the $1000 mark, but at that point, youre really paying for innovation over flagship spcs. The post The Ultra-Slim iPhone Air Is A Bendgate Disaster Waiting To Happen All Over Again first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Nike makes Rejuven8 shoe with eco-friendly ReactX ensuring breathability, flexibility, and containment
    www.yankodesign.com
Nike is constantly increasing its catalog of performance and recovery shoes. While the Swoosh brand has already dropped a range of clog-like comfort wear, it is extending the fleet with the release of ReactX Rejuven8 in an amazing set of colors. The striking highlight of this new silhouette is the colorways, and the subtle premium is the use of Nikes relatively new ReactX foam, thus the exciting name, not just in the midsole. The new chronicle of Nike clogs brings forth this comfortable footwear that has a distinct make and of course a superior material innovation in design. This results in a pair that is comfortable for all feet types, so that the users wearing it can feel relaxed the moment they dip their feet inside, which respires well with the tiny breathability holes on the top.Designer: NikeIf you have been following Nikes material innovations, youll remember the ReactX from its launch in the summer of 2023 in the Nike InfinityRN 4. The specially designed foam, which is sustainably created has found its way into a range of Nike footwear since its introduction, for instance in the running phenom the Pegasus 41. The super lightweight and bouncy material has been the primary choice for midsoles of sneakers in the past, with the laceless ReactX Rejuven8, the experience is not only limited to the sole, the ReactX foam is also used in the construction of the shoe upper as well.Making its presence felt in four colorways: gray, black, beige, and orange, the ReactX Rejuven8 exudes an interesting wavy design thats based on a thick slab of ReactX foam and has a breathable clog-esque form factor. With the foam finding place throughout the shoe, literally; Nikes silhouette is 13 percent more responsive to shoes made from React foam, which is a significant advantage not just in terms of the shoes responsiveness but also because of its lightweight nature and sustainable properties. The slip-on shoe has a comfortable form factor and an extra wide ankle opening so you can easily slip in and out of the shoes. In addition to being lightweight, flexible, and easy to wear, the shoe has a chunky foam midsole and a rubber outsole for a nice grip. While the cushiony ReactX foam footbed has your feet cradled in every stride, the holes above the toe ensure optimal airflow inside. Nike Rejuven8 with ReactX is expected to reduce the carbon footprint by up to 43 percent due to reduced energy in the manufacturing process, which aligns well with Nikes goal of going net zero by 2050. If Nikes idea of comfort and eco-friendliness aligns with your idea of responsiveness and recovery footwear; you can grab the ReactX Rejuven8 for $70 from Nike and partner stores. The post Nike makes Rejuven8 shoe with eco-friendly ReactX ensuring breathability, flexibility, and containment first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Oversized blocky headphones are actually portable speakers in disguise
    www.yankodesign.com
Headphones are great for ensuring the privacy of our listening experience and blocking out the world from ruining it. Theyre also great for avoiding inconveniencing or annoying other people by saving them from having to hear music or audio shows they never subscribed to. Unfortunately, headphones also isolate us and prevent us from sharing our joys with like-minded people.Portable speakers are almost the complete opposite, broadcasting your tunes to anyone within range and sharing them with whoever might be willing to listen. It turns music into a social activity, one that can help create and strengthen bonds. This speaker concept is almost a tongue-in-cheek jab at headphones by applying their standard silhouette to a speaker and giving a unique industrial aesthetic.Designers: Sihyun Choi, Seongyeop JeonMost portable wireless speakers use a single-body design to bring around in a bag or vehicle. They arent always the easiest to carry around, however, though some designs are now adding carrying straps for that very purpose. This design concept, in contrast, is all about being carried in your hand, and it takes inspiration from that more portable audio equipment many carry around all the time.At first glance, you almost think youre seeing an extra large pair of headphones because of the conventional design of having two speakers joined by some arching structure. In this case, however, those speakers are oddly blocky and the arch is more of an angled bar. The large size is, of course, due to the fact that these are actually wireless speakers with dual drivers, and it isnt shy about announcing that to the world. The W-YZ portable speaker adopts an aesthetic that is reminiscent of the style of teenage engineering, blending industrial style with minimalism to great success. It utilizes clean lines and sharp edges to draw a striking figure, while surfaces are mostly barren except for essential labels. The handle is a simple metal tube bent at right angles, and carrying this design is almost similar to how people used to carry portable speakers in the 80s.Unlike those old speakers, however, W-YZs two drivers are truly independent, and you can turn them around any which way to send the music in the exact direction you want. Its definitely an intriguing design, one that defies conventions in the portable speaker market. Whether its a practical design as far as portability goes is still an open question, but it will definitely be quite the head-turner if you bring it in public spaces. The post Oversized blocky headphones are actually portable speakers in disguise first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • 4 Reasons Why I Love the OM-3 So Far: A Perfect Blend of Retro Charm and Cutting-Edge Tech
    www.yankodesign.com
The OM SYSTEM OM-3 has been on my radar since its announcement, and now that I have it in hand, its clear why this camera is generating such strong reactions. As someone who appreciates a balance between portability, performance, and design, the OM-3 checks a lot of boxes. It brings back the classic styling that made Olympus cameras so iconic, yet inside, it packs the kind of cutting-edge imaging tech that keeps it competitive in a crowded market. The fact that it borrows heavily from the flagship OM-1 Mark II while shedding some of the bulk makes it even more appealing.Designer: OMWhat excites me most is how OM SYSTEM has refined the experience for photographers who want both high performance and a tactile shooting process. The button layout and dials feel like a natural extension of the photographers hand, while the new front-mounted Creative Dial adds an intuitive way to switch between color profiles and monochrome modes. At a time when many mirrorless cameras feel increasingly dependent on touchscreen menus, the OM-3 embraces physical controls without sacrificing modern functionality.Beyond aesthetics, this camera delivers serious capability. From its high-speed 120 fps electronic shutter to its computational photography tools, the OM-3 doesnt compromise where it counts. The robust weather sealing ensures that it can handle the unpredictability of real-world shooting conditions, something Ill put to the test when I take it to MWC 2025 for coverage. This will be my daily driver in the weeks ahead, and Im already confident in its ability to keep up. Here are seven reasons why I love the OM-3 so far.1. Retro-inspired design with Modern DurabilityOM SYSTEM has struck a delicate balance between nostalgia and functionality. The OM-3s silver-and-black aesthetic immediately calls back to classic Olympus film cameras, particularly the OM-1 from the 1970s. The textured leatherette grip and magnesium alloy construction add to its premium feel, giving it the weight and solidity of a professional tool while remaining compact. The lack of an oversized handgrip makes it feel more like a traditional rangefinder than a modern DSLR-style mirrorless, which is part of its charm.Unlike many retro-styled cameras that are purely aesthetic exercises, the OM-3 retains professional-level durability. The IP53 weather sealing means it can withstand dust, rain, and even sub-freezing temperatures. This level of environmental resistance is rarely found in compact mirrorless bodies, and its reassuring to know that I can take this camera anywhere without worrying about conditions. Ive used weather-sealed cameras before, but the combination of classic styling with real-world ruggedness makes the OM-3 feel special. The engineering challenge of fitting a fully mechanical 1/8000s shutter into a body this slim wasnt easy, but OM SYSTEM pulled it off. It retains the manual control feel that enthusiasts love while integrating advanced internals. Even small details, like the vintage-inspired power switch and mode dial, make it clear that OM SYSTEM designed this with photographers in mind.2. Intuitive Button Layout and Creative DialOne of my biggest frustrations with modern mirrorless cameras is the reliance on touchscreens for fundamental settings. While touchscreens are useful, they dont replace the precision and speed of physical dials. The OM-3 fixes this with an incredibly well-thought-out button layout that prioritizes usability. Every key function is within reach, allowing me to adjust settings without taking my eye off the viewfinder. The highlight here is the front-mounted Creative Dial. Borrowed from the PEN-F, this dial offers instant access to four monochrome modes, four-color profiles, and 16 art filters. Instead of diving into menus to adjust tonal characteristics, I can flip the dial and see immediate changes in my composition. Its a small but impactful addition that enhances the shooting experience.Another smart decision was incorporating a well-placed exposure mode dial while allowing extensive customization for modern workflows. The OM-3s design embraces traditional control sensibilities while integrating digital flexibility, making it one of the most enjoyable cameras to use. For those who appreciate tactile feedback and quick adjustments, its a dream setup.3. Flagship-Level Performance Without the BulkDespite its retro form, the OM-3 doesnt skimp on performance. It inherits the same 20.4MP stacked BSI Live MOS sensor from the OM-1 Mark II, delivering excellent speed and low-light performance. The OM-3 offers 120 fps burst shooting with the electronic shutter, but this mode locks focus on the first frame (S-AF). For full autofocus and auto-exposure tracking (C-AF), the camera supports up to 50 fps, which remains impressive for capturing fast-moving subjects. The TruePic X dual-core processor ensures that computational photography features like Handheld High-Res Shot (50MP) and Live ND work seamlessly. Unlike traditional high-resolution modes that require a tripod, the OM-3 can create 50MP images handheld, making it far more versatile in real-world shooting scenarios. What makes this even more impressive is that it delivers flagship performance in a body that weighs just 414g. Compared to full-frame alternatives, which often exceed 600g, the OM-3 remains an incredibly portable option for professionals and enthusiasts alike.4. IP53 Weather Sealing for Real-World ReliabilityWeather sealing is one of the most overlooked features in mirrorless cameras, but the OM-3 sets a high standard with its IP53 rating. This isnt just basic splash resistance; its a level of durability that ensures the camera can handle rain, dust, and freezing temperatures down to -10C.For photographers who shoot in unpredictable conditions, this kind of reliability is invaluable. Ive lost count of how many times Ive hesitated to pull out a camera in harsh weather, but with the OM-3, I dont have to think twice. The magnesium alloy body not only adds to its durability but also helps with thermal management, keeping the camera functional in extreme conditions.Knowing that Ill be using this camera at MWC 2025, where fast-paced shooting and unpredictable environments are the norm, the IP53 rating gives me peace of mind. Whether its covering an outdoor event or navigating crowded show floors, I know the OM-3 will handle whatever comes its way.Ill continue putting the OM-3 through its paces in the coming weeks, but my early impressions are overwhelmingly positive. Its rare to find a camera that blends heritage-inspired design with truly professional performance, but the OM-3 does just that. As my daily driver leading up to MWC 2025, Ill be pushing it in every scenario imaginable, so stay tuned for Yanko Designs full coverage and deep dive into what this camera can really do.The post 4 Reasons Why I Love the OM-3 So Far: A Perfect Blend of Retro Charm and Cutting-Edge Tech first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Electricity-producing slime can become medical tool and energy source in the future
    www.yankodesign.com
Childhood often involves playing with slime. This popular toy, still enjoyed by many, offers a uniquely tactile and relaxing experience. Squishing, mixing, and manipulating slime provides a satisfying sensory outlet. The enduring appeal of slime is evident in its prominent online presence, with creators on platforms like TikTok and YouTube showcasing imaginative ways to play, and the popularity of slime ASMR further demonstrating its widespread appeal. But what if slime could do more than just provide sensory amusement? What if it could generate electricity?Designer: University of GuelphScientists at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, have developed a slime-like material with precisely that capability. While not exactly electric slime, this innovative substance generates electricity when compressed or squeezed. Composed of 90% water, along with biocompatible and bio-based oleic (fatty) acid and amino acids, the prototype represents a significant leap in material science. Researchers discovered that the slime forms intricate structures at a microscopic level, allowing it to dynamically arrange and rearrange itself into various layered formations. This unique structural property is key to its electricity-generating ability. This is not just something fun to play around with. The possibilities of what can be done with this electricity-generating slime is vast. For example, it can be used for bandages, making it easier for open wounds to heal faster since these will attract healing cells to the open wound. This can also be used for targeted drug delivery so that the medicine itself will be released when the structure changes. There are also some non-medical possibilities. You can use the material for household flooring so that it will produce green electricity when people are walking on it, somewhat similar to the Kinetic Dance Floor that Coldplay used in their concert tour. You can also create a squishy power bank to charge your devices. While the potential is vast, this electricity-producing slime project is still in its early stages. Extensive research, rigorous testing, and further prototyping are crucial before it can be considered for medical or commercial use. The current prototype, with its somewhat slimy, mucous-like appearance, clearly needs aesthetic refinement. Beyond aesthetics, the challenge of scalable mass production looms large. Developing efficient and cost-effective methods for manufacturing this unique material in large quantities will be essential to its widespread adoption. Despite these hurdles, the innovative nature of this project and the breadth of its potential applications make it a fascinating area of research with the potential to revolutionize various fields. The post Electricity-producing slime can become medical tool and energy source in the future first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Water shelter in the middle of the forest invites you to contemplate water and light
    www.yankodesign.com
Imagine youre walking through a beautiful forest. Youre taking in everything and breathing the fresh air deeply, feeling a sense of serenity and calmness wash over you after all the noise and chaos of the concrete jungle. Suddenly, in the middle of a clearing, you see a structure that seems ancient but also looks modern. Do you run away from it, thinking youre suddenly on an episode of Lost, or do you go towards it and explore what it is and what its doing there in the forest?Designer: P + S Estudio de ArquitecturaIf youre the former, we cant blame you. But if youre the latter, youll probably enjoy exploring the COMPLUVIUM, a water shelter in the Rouen forest in northwestern France. It is a geometric spatial structure that provides a stark but interesting contrast to the forest and greenery surrounding it. The materials used mainly for it, pinewood, fiberglass, and linen, integrates the pavilion into the landscape of the forest. The way its designed, it also highlights how water blends in with the forest as it is able to collect and frame the rain instead of just being protected from it. The COMPLUVIUM is a cube like structure with a structural base made from pinewood which grounds it in natural materials. It uses fiberglass that is reinforced with resin to let the light filter through and at the same time, protecting the shelter from extreme weather conditions and also wear and tear over time. The interior and exterior surface use locally sourced linen with the former using the natural finish and the later getting a black protective coating. It brings together local building traditions like the wood and line which are part of Normandys cultural identity while also bringing contemporary spatial experimentation. The central void of the pavilion has a 5 x 5 x 5-meter cubic configuration while the inward-sloping roofs serve as the catch basin of the structure, directing the rainwater to the center. This is meant to be a contemplative space in the middle of the forest, bringing together water and light, and all the different materials put together to achieve the marriage of the two. The COMPLUVIUM, therefore, is more than just a shelter. Its a carefully crafted experience. It invites contemplation, not just of the rain, but of the interplay between nature and design. By blending traditional materials and modern architectural principles, P + S Estudio de Arquitectura has created a space that both contrasts with and complements its forest setting. Its a place where one can reconnect with the natural world, finding a moment of peace within the gentle rhythm of falling rain, framed and celebrated by the unique design of the COMPLUVIUM. It stands as a testament to the power of architecture to not only provide shelter, but to enhance our understanding and appreciation of the environment around us.The post Water shelter in the middle of the forest invites you to contemplate water and light first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Ink Console is an e-book reader + gaming handheld hybrid that plays interactive text-based titles
    www.yankodesign.com
In the late 80s and 90s, gaming was dominated by an array of pixels limited in a 2D world. The gameplay was also minuscule by the current gaming standards but the nostalgia is revered even today because it triggered a whole new era of entertainment thats now become one of the biggest industries. Back in those days, it was a ritual sitting in front of the screen getting completely lost in the adventure of role-playing games like the Doom or Dungeons & Dragons.Barcelona-based Tech wiz Daniel Puchau whos worked with names like Greenboy Games has developed a gamebook thatll get you excited for the classic gaming nostalgia. This is Ink Console an e-reader that has an assortment of text-based adventure games in a story mode where the player can decide the fate of the character and the story. The motivation to take up this exciting project came from the yearning to bring the magic of text adventures, like the 1980s classic Zork I, to a new audience unfamiliar with these games.Designer: Daniel PuchauThis retro gadget comes with an analog joystick and potentiometer to input the desired choices at each step or navigate the menu where your suite of gamebooks is arranged in a library. The maker is also considering adding a mini keyboard to the mix for conversational games that might get a dose of AI-assisted wizardry. The monochrome e-reader has a 7.5-inch e-ink display (800400 resolution) and is powered by a 32-bit dual-core processor. Theres just 4MB of flash memory and 8 MB of PSRAM. Keeping up with modern times, the gadget does have an SD reader, USB-C charging port, stereo audio output, and a 3.5mm jack. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity options. The in-built 5,000mAh battery could last a very long time, given there are no graphics-intensive gameplay elements to render in vivid colors. The gamebook titles can be developed by the community members as well, thanks to the open-source Software Development Kit. That means you can bring your imaginative storytelling to life with all the in-built tools and immersive interface, sans any requirement for coding. Daniel says the Ink Console has an inventory system that allows you to collect and manage items in the game world. To make things even more interesting, there is a health status system which is ideal for text-based role-playing games. The suite of stories for the gadget currently includes thrilling expeditions, deep sea adventures, sci-fi narratives, and everything else that can be knitted into an interesting story by the creative community. There is no word on the pricing or availability of the e-reader yet, so well have to wait for more on this interesting gadget in the coming weeks. The post Ink Console is an e-book reader + gaming handheld hybrid that plays interactive text-based titles first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Gigantic mat made from recycled plastic puts a colorful twist on a sad story
    www.yankodesign.com
Plastic continues to be a huge environmental problem across the world, and governments and organizations struggle to not only raise awareness but also implement policies that encourage conscientious practices not only in using but especially in disposing of plastic-based products. The fact that this material causes long-term harm to the planet is hammered into the minds of almost all people of all ages across the globe, and yet the ubiquity and affordability of plastic continue to be temptations few can conveniently avoid. One of the problems with the straightforward strategy is that it is no longer enough to just tell people that there is a problem. You also have to give them solutions or alternatives that would help pull them away from bad habits. This sprawling humongous mat in the middle of Thailands Laan Kon Muang Plaza, for example, doesnt just provide an eye-catching place for people to sit or stand on, it tells the story of the countrys plastic woes as well as the potential answer to those problems.Designer: MVRDVYou might wonder how on Earth did they make such a gigantic floor mat, and the answer is similar to that quote on how to eat a gigantic animal: piece by piece. This colorful Mega Mat measuring around 875 square meters (9,418 sq ft) is actually made of 532 rectangular pieces. These modular mats are woven using a traditional Thai textile pattern to create a spectacular yet functional installation for Bangkok Design Week. The sheer size of the mat isnt the only thing special about it, of course. Each of those pieces are made from recycled plastic, so you can only imagine the magnitude of plastic garbage that went into the creation of this masterpiece. Sadly, that amount is only the tip of the iceberg, as the mat itself testifies to the unfortunate situation of plastic waste in the country.Although the mats concentric colors were chosen to match the equally lively roofs of the Wat Suthat Thepwararam behind it, there is also a deeper meaning behind those colors as well as their position in the design. The outermost and arguably biggest red area represents the percentage of plastic that goes to unsanitary landfills, while the orange next to it shows how much gets dumped in sanitary landfills. Yellow denotes plastic that goes uncollected, while green is for the amount of plastic that gets recycled.Of course, visitors might not be aware of these facts unless they read the exhibit located underneath the mats solitary lifted corner, a design that also resembles the Wat Suthat Thepwararams roofs. That said, they might better understand how the Mega Mat represents a solution to the plastic pollution problem, as it will later be dismantled and the individual mats distributed to become temple floor mats, yoga mats, and even upcycled bags. The post Gigantic mat made from recycled plastic puts a colorful twist on a sad story first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Barbie-themed G-SHOCK watch has a beauty thats more than skin-deep
    www.yankodesign.com
Ever since the new Barbie live-action movie came out, the doll franchise has received renewed interest and, of course, collaborations that make pink the new black. Given Barbies colorful history, despite its strong association with a single hue, its not really that surprising that it continues to have a large following, especially ones that are willing to cough up the dough to buy products with distinct Barbie themes, whether or not theyll actually use those products.Weve seen Barbies design language used and reinterpreted for a variety of objects, from miniaturized designer chairs, cameras, and, of course, chic clamshell phones. It, therefore, doesnt come as a shock that wed also get a rugged G-SHOCK watch in this iconic bright pink hue, but this collaboration with the worlds most famous doll does more than just give the worlds most iconic rugged watch a superficial paint job.Designer: CasioWith some Barbie-themed products, its probably enough to give the item a pink color and some branding and call it a day. The G-SHOCK Barbie edition, however, goes a little deeper, down to almost every visible part. Building up on Casios GMA-S110 known for its gear-shaped parts, the Barbie edition gives each component a different hue of pink as well as a different texture, perhaps to convey the metaphor of having subtle differences in personalities and characters even if were all united by a single pink color.Of course, not everything in the watch is pink, or else it would be impossible to read. The clock hands and bezel inlays are painted black to stand out from the pink background. In the dark, when its almost impossible to see color anyway, the watch turns on an amber light that gives it a rather spooky aura.Theres no shortage of Barbie branding to be found, from the engraved case back to the Barbie logo at the 3 oclock position to a heart motif inset dial at the 9 oclock position. Even the strap has its fair share of accents, like the Barbie Silohead logo at one end of loop.Invisible to the naked eye, Casio reveals that key components of the watchs bezel and band use bio-based resin to help reduce the products negative impact on the environment. It turns the watch into more than just a fashion accessory, becoming a strong statement that not only supports sustainable living but also women empowerment. The post Barbie-themed G-SHOCK watch has a beauty thats more than skin-deep first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Boat-shaped yellow table tennis table is built for permanent outdoor installation
    www.yankodesign.com
When were outdoors and we see kids on their tablets or mobile devices, people of a certain age will probably lament that back in the old days, we would be doing other outdoorsy things. There has been a call for public spaces to provide non-digital things for kids and grown ups to do so as not to waste their hours or a whole day glued to their device. One popular thing that people can do is play sports like soccer, basketball, and even individual activities like running, biking, tennis, and of course table tennis. The next challenge would be to have equipment in these public spaces that people can use instead of just being glued to their screens.Designer: POPPOne such piece of equipment is the HEROair, an outdoor table tennis that is pretty eye-catching because of its bright, yellow color. It is made from heavy duty, strengthened marine grade aluminum and is weatherproof so it can withstand all kinds of weather conditions when placed in public outdoor spaces like playgrounds, town plazas, schools, commercial precints, and even the beach. It is also designed for simple assembly and permanent installation with its flat-pack delivery setup. This engineer-certified outdoor table tennis table is finished with a custom exterior-rated matte yellow powder coat with a light sandstone texture. Its curved corners actuallly makes it look like a little yellow boat. It would look right at home on the beachwalk or at a rooftop or any space for communities. The bold shape and the vibrant color of the HEROair makes it both a recreational table and also a piece of urban design, just like with POPPs other creations. Beyond its striking appearance, the HEROair is engineered for longevity and security. Marine-grade stainless steel fasteners ensure robust construction, while secure anchoring footings provide stability and prevent movement. The option for tamper-proof fasteners adds an extra layer of security, addressing any concerns about vandalism or theft. • A Self-Sharpening Blade and Built-In Mirror Make This Pocket Razor a Must-Have Travel EDC
    www.yankodesign.com
Its strange how shaving is associated with masculinity, but not through product design through marketing. Youll see aftershaves with the most testosterone-y names and flavors, but your shaver, it still looks fairly basic. Most shavers have an ergonomic design that prioritizes function (as they should), over form. The MOTOR-ZERO3.0 finds a way to do both with equal measure. The MOTOR-ZERO3.0 looks like something straight out of a cyberpunk dreamcompact, sleek, and designed with the precision of a mecha-inspired masterpiece. The razors unique design demands attention, with its metallic body, angular contours, and a form factor that feels like a futuristic gadget plucked from a sci-fi thriller. It looks futuristic, edgy, manly, and still manages to be functionally superior thanks to design details like its built-in mirror and its self-sharpening blades that get better the more you shave.Designer: MECH-ONEClick Here to Buy Now: $49 $99 (51% off). Hurry, only 1/105 left!At just 110 grams and measuring small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, the MOTOR-ZERO3.0 feels more like a premium piece of tech than a traditional grooming tool. The metal shell gives it a reassuring heft without being cumbersome, and every surface, every detail, speaks to a level of design obsession rarely seen in personal care products. But its not just about looksthis thing is built to perform. The self-sharpening blade mechanism ensures that your shaver doesnt dull with time it actually gets sharper, a rare case of a product improving as you use it rather than degrading or experiencing wear and tear. The MOTOR-ZERO3.0 comes with two cutterheads that flex to contour to the shape of your jaw. Unlike shavers that need to be positioned or maneuvered specifically so the blades interface against your skin, the MOTOR-ZERO3.0s flexible heads bend ever so gently to cover every part of your jaw, from the flat areas like the cheek to more sharply contoured parts like your chin or lower mandible (jawline). The cutterheads use German steel and a unique self-abrasive design that allows the blades to constantly sharpen themselves as they rotate. Its a weirdly clever trick that ensures the shaver stays sharp at all times.I wouldnt be talking about a cyberpunk shaver if it didnt also uplift the user experience. To that end, the MOTOR-ZERO3.0 is the only shaver Ive ever come across with its own built-in mirror. Built into the top of the shavers cap, you can magnetically snap the mirror off and use it to inspect your shaving routine, ensuring you cover all areas without missing any spots. For centuries powder kits have had built-in mirrors this time a portable shaver packs one and I cant stress enough what a usability win it is.The MOTOR-ZERO3.0s magnetic structure makes it incredibly easy to disassemble and clean, with both the cap and cutterhead snapping off so you can run them all under warm water to rinse out stubble. Whether youre in an airport restroom, the backseat of a cab, or rushing to freshen up between meetings, this razor adapts to your pace. The IPX7 waterproof rating further enhances its travel credentials, making it just as functional in a steamy hotel bathroom as it is in a dry office setting.Dual 500mAh batteries inside the MOTOR-ZERO3.0 last up to 120 days on a full charge, a staggering number that means you can practically shift to another country and shave every day for 3 months before needing to charge. And when it does need a boost, the Type-C fast charging cable ensures youre back in action in just 45 minutes. LED indicators on the side let you keep track of battery life, removing the guesswork from your grooming routine. The cyberpunk-meets-industrial design is an obvious chefs kiss for people looking for stylish grooming accessories. The MOTOR-ZERO3.0 embodies the kind of precision engineering usually reserved for high-end watches or cutting-edge tech gadgets. Available in black and gray, its mecha-inspired aesthetic gives it an almost collectible feellike something designed for the future, not inspired by the cowboy saloon-esque past. The way it sits in the hand, the balance of weight, the satisfying snap of the magnetic assemblyit all contributes to a sense of craftsmanship that feels future-forward.And in doing so, the MOTOR-ZERO3.0 ticks all boxes. It isnt gimmicky the way most cyberpunk tech is, relying only on aesthetics rather than actual substance. In the MOTOR-ZERO3.0s case, the cyberpunk complements its remarkably cutting-edge engineering, from the inclusion of that mirror to the self-sharpening blades, to everything sitting in a design so compact youll want to carry it everywhere.Click Here to Buy Now: $49 $99 (51% off). • This ultra-compact fire pit with a huge flame is great for overlanding and camping enthusiasts
    www.yankodesign.com
Setting up campfires is a responsible task that needs to be properly taken care of once youre leaving the site. This has become even more important as raging wildfires are a nightmare worldwide. While most campers are now adopting modern and practical options of portable fire pits, the buck finally stops at whether your propane fire pit can create a fire good enough to keep you and your camp warm.Howl Campfires addressed this issue with the Howl R4 last year but some irking disadvantages needed to be polished off. It was very heavy at 34 pounds, created fire that was not very warm, and it was only for a premium set of users since it cost a steep $1,299. The Colarado-based maker has listened to the countless reviews and come up with a version that takes care of these predicaments which stopped other campers from going for this quality option.Designer: Howl CampfiresTheir improved version is a balanced mix of all the improvements as it is much cheaper, has a crisp fire, has a compact form factor, and sheds a lot of weight. This is the Howl R1 fire pit that is made for hunters, overlanders, campers, and hikers who want a good flame out of their fire pit. That is especially valued in colder climates where staying out in territory unknown can come with a lot of risks. Priced just at $349, the portable fire pit is directly pitted against the competition. It is a propane-fueled flame thrower of sorts, as it doesnt claim to mimic a real wood fire, but it still does the intended task. The open configuration of the fire pit makes the flames rise higher for an infrared warmth that can make your crew cozy in the frigid cold. There are 160 holes in the burner frame that individually create small flames which are then combined into a bigger flame. This makes the fire surge upwards out of the grille for a mesmerizing display without tweaking up the output to the maximum at all times. That means less propane is required as maximum fuel is burned. However, when you require a bigger flame you can turn the dial to the full, creating a whopping 32 inches of flame in a triangle shape.According to Howl, the burn time of the fire pit is estimated at around eight hours on the 20-pound propane tank fuel. The low stable design set on sturdy legs means you are very unlikely to knock it accidentally while it is burning. The unit can be folded down to the size of 13.3 x 8.4 x 6 inches and stacked in your camping gear when its time to move on. You can also choose to strap it to the propane tank as it weighs just 5 pounds in total and has a travel-ready build. The maker is already taking pre-orders for this outdoor accessory with shipping promised in mid-June.The post This ultra-compact fire pit with a huge flame is great for overlanding and camping enthusiasts first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • This Dual-Blade Folding Knife With Damascus CuMai Steel is So Stunning, You Wont Want to Use It
    www.yankodesign.com
Folding knives were first invented for compactness and safety this one adds variety to the mix too. Meet the 2 Blade Wharncliffe Trapper a folding knife that houses not one, but two blades. Open the one you need, use it, and fold it right back in once youre done. Aside from the minor advantages that each blades individual shape provides, the only overarching benefit of such a knife is that its ridiculously cool and if I werent typing this article right now, Id be throwing money at my screen.Trapper knives were arguably the first multitools, designed for fur trappers and hunters who needed a versatile, reliable tool for processing game in the field. Traditionally featuring two bladesa clip point and a spey bladethese knives were perfect for skinning, slicing, and general utility work. The clip-point blade offered precision for detailed cutting, while the spey blade, with its rounded tip, was ideal for skinning animals without puncturing hides. Forgesmith Jason Leclair decided to turn this age-old utility knife into a sheer work of art, blending Damascus and CuMai into what can only be described as the most beautiful pair of marbled hand-forged blades my eyes have ever seen.Designer: Jason LeclairImagine painting the Mona Lisa twice thats how I like describing the sheer amount of artistry in Leclairs knifemaking skills. The trapper boasts two blades, made from Damascus core CuMai steel. The inner Damascus layer is visible on the blades edge, with its gorgeous marbling pattern, but the higher you go, you see the CuMai sandwiched in the middle. The Cu or Copper makes itself visible like a lightning streak running across from bolster to tip. The shape of the copper strip as well as the Damascus steel is unique to each blade of each knife, which means theres absolutely no way two knives look the same every knife is unique like a fingerprint. Most trappers come with clip-point and spey-style blades, but Leclair switched things up by ditching the spey for a Wharncliffe or sheepsfoot-style blade. It definitely adds a bit of character to the knife, giving the edge an upward flair that really makes for a great silhouette. While it isnt ideal for fur-trapping, Id be mighty pissed if you used something as gorgeous as this to skin rabbits. Its like using the Mona Lisa for a shower curtain. The 2 Blade Wharncliffe Trapper is nothing short of a collectors item, although I wouldnt be opposed to occasionally using it to maybe cut cigars or open letters, you know? The handle is arguably as gorgeous as the blades it ouses. Made from WWII vintage rag micarta, it carries the weight of time while offering durability that rivals modern synthetics. Micarta, a composite material made from layers of fabric and resin, has long been prized for its toughness, and this particular batch holds a nostalgic charm. Decades-old yet perfectly functional, it provides a grippy, comfortable surface, ensuring the knife feels just as good in hand as it looks. The bolsters, crafted from tri-color Mokume Gane, add another layer of detail. Mokume Gane, a Japanese metalworking technique that fuses different metals together in a swirling, woodgrain-like pattern, gives each bolster a unique visual identity. No two will ever look the same. Accenting the handle is a flying squirrel pattern shield, a small but deliberate detail that reinforces the knifes individuality.Titanium liners ensure strength while keeping the weight manageable, an intentional upgrade over heavier stainless steel alternatives. The combination of materialshigh-carbon steel springs, Mokume Gane bolsters, copper accents, and vintage micartacreates an interplay of textures and colors that make the knife feel almost alive. Every material choice serves a purpose, whether functional, aesthetic, or both. While many knives lean into either artistry or utility, this one balances both effortlessly. It embraces the traditional trapper knife design, but rather than stopping at nostalgia, it evolves the concept with high-end materials and meticulous craftsmanship. A tool, a collectors piece, and an example of expert knife-making, this dual-blade slipjoint reflects Leclairs sheer patience and skill. The knife is up for sale and Leclairs accepting bookings on his Instagram if youre interested. The post This Dual-Blade Folding Knife With Damascus CuMai Steel is So Stunning, You Wont Want to Use It first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Ingenious Hacker Revives the Nokia 3310 with a USB-C Charging Port For Just $26
    www.yankodesign.com
The Nokia 3310 is the closest thing consumer tech has to a cockroach. Built to survive drops, spills, and the passage of time itself, this chunky brick of a phone has been immortalized in memes, internet folklore, and the memories of anyone who lived through the early 2000s. It was the phone you could drop down a flight of stairs and find in perfect working order at the bottom. The one that could take a direct hit from a hammer and still let you play Snake. Even its battery life felt mythicalweeks on standby, days of talk time, all while todays smartphones barely last till dinner. But for all its resilience, the 3310 is a relic of a bygone era. The proprietary charging port, once a symbol of Nokias dominance, now feels like an artifact from an ancient civilization. Try finding a compatible charger today, and youll quickly realize that nostalgia alone isnt enough to keep this tank operational. Thats where a clever new mod steps inone that breathes just a little modern life into the legendary handset without compromising its rugged soul.Designer: Andrea SalvatoriA YouTuber by the name of Andrea Salvatori has designed a USB-C adapter that seamlessly replaces the 3310s old-school charging module. This isnt some clunky, solder-heavy hack job; its a sleek, drop-in upgrade that fits like it was meant to be there. The process is refreshingly simple: open up the phone, pop out the microphone from the original charging module, install the new one, and screw everything back together. Thats it. No microcontroller trickery, no finicky voltage regulationthe 3310 happily sips power from any standard 5V USB-C source like it was always meant to.Its almost surreal to see this fusion of old and new. A phone that once relied on a forgotten charging standard can now share a cable with your laptop, tablet, or modern smartphone. Theres something poetic about plugging a Nokia 3310 into the same charger as a MacBook, as if two entirely different technological eras have found common ground. The best part? It doesnt just workit works elegantly. The module retains the spring-loaded contacts of the original design, meaning no loose wires, no risk of breaking delicate components. Its as close to an official upgrade as you can get without Nokia (or now its parent company HMD) itself stepping in.Beyond the sheer novelty of it, this mod has practical appeal. If youre one of the rare few who still owns a 3310whether for nostalgia, minimalism, or just a desperate need for a phone that wont shatter on impactthis USB-C upgrade makes keeping it charged effortless. No more hoarding 20-year-old adapters or scouring eBay for questionable third-party chargers. You can toss a single USB-C cable in your bag and know that, should the need arise, your trusty Nokia will be ready to go.Just to clear the air, were talking about the classic 3310 phone from 2000, not the recently refurbished one that rocks a color screen and an (ugh) MicroUSB connector.Of course, not everyone has the patience or tools to crack open an old phone and swap parts around. Thats why Andrea has made the USB-C module available for purchase. For just 25 ($26.2 USD), you can order one and bring your 3310 into the modern age, no engineering degree required. Its the kind of upgrade that sparks joynot because it adds flashy new features, but because it respects the integrity of the original device while making it just a little more practical. And broadly, this is what I love about the tech communitys ability to come up with the most unique solutions in the search for true consumer-friendliness. Even something as small as replacing the charging port on a device is an apt act of rebellion, because it means doing something that benefits YOU, not the corporate that sold you the device.Weve seen mavericks lead the way in the past too, like our friend Ken Pillonel who managed to fit a USB-C on the iPhone and the AirPods YEARS before Apple actually did so. Pillonel even went as far as open-sourcing the circuitry to allow others to perform the same mods. Now all I ask is that someone put Qi2 wireless charging on the back of the Nokia 3310!The post Ingenious Hacker Revives the Nokia 3310 with a USB-C Charging Port For Just $26 first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • This LEGO Grand Central Station Set is the Ultimate Tribute to NYCs Iconic Landmark
    www.yankodesign.com
Grand Central Station is one of those places that feels alive even when its standing still. Ive never even been to it but it feels like I know it intimately because of how relevant its been made through pop culture and films like The Avengers, Madagascar, I Am Legend, etc. its a monument to movement, a crossroads of countless stories, and a masterclass in Beaux-Arts architecture. If youve ever stood beneath its celestial ceiling, watching the golden clock gleam in the main concourse, you know the magic it holds. Now, that same energy has been captured brick by brick in a fan-made LEGO Ideas submission that deserves a spot in every train enthusiasts collection.Designed by LEGO builder Mind the Brick, this Grand Central Station project is a love letter to classic rail travel. Its built on a 4840 baseplate, packing in rich architectural details and a lively cast of minifigures. The creators goal is clear: train sets are plentiful, but detailed stations are rare. This build bridges that gap, giving LEGO cityscapes a proper terminal filled with history, character, and the bustle of daily commuters.Designer: Mind The BrickRight away, the design commands attention with its early 20th-century aesthetic. The grand facade echoes the elegance of real-world train stations from New York to Prague, blending European and American influences. Massive arching windows let the imaginary sunlight pour into the main hall, while intricate stonework and decorative elements make it feel like a true historic landmark. Even at minifigure scale, the attention to detail is staggering. The real charm lies in the intricacies of the design. The modular design allows for easy access, revealing a fully realized interior brimming with activity. The main hall serves as a waiting area, complete with LEGO-made exhibits of classic steam locomotives. A ticket booth stands ready to serve hurried travelers, while a baggage check and mailroom keep things running behind the scenes. Even the Train Masters office has been included, offering a glimpse into the inner workings of station operations. Its a build that captures not just the physical space of a train station but the daily rhythms and routines that bring it to life.To make the MOC (My Own Creation) engaging, Mind The Brick devised a set of backstories for all the minifigures in the scene. Theres Robert, the overworked Train Master, fueled by endless cups of coffee from his secretary, Clara. Joe, the ticket seller, manages the office solo while his colleague enjoys a much-needed vacation. Meanwhile, Sue rushes to catch her train to Prague, debating whether she has time to grab a croissant from Berny, the street vendor outside. These characters transform the station from a static model into a dynamic world filled with humor, stress, and the small everyday dramas that play out in places like these. Then theres Hercules, the private detective, setting off for London to crack a case involving a stolen dog and an aristocratic scandal. Diana and her baby daughter are en route to Paris, reuniting with a husband who works as a chef in a famous restaurant. Even Old John, the janitor, has his hands full keeping the station spotless, while his niece Georgia, a mechanic, tends to the safety barriers on the platform. Among the chaos, Sam the station cat watches the world go by, perfectly content in his usual spot. This level of storytelling is rare in a LEGO Ideas set. Every corner of the build hints at a story, every minifigure has a role to play. Its the kind of set that invites you to invent new adventures, whether its a missed train, a surprise encounter, or a secret mission unfolding in the stations hidden corners. Add a few animals to the scene and recreate the famous encounter in the animated movie Madagascar! With 10,000 supporters already backing it, Grand Central Station has struck a chord with fans of LEGO trains and classic architecture alike. It fills a much-needed gap in the LEGO landscape, providing a detailed, immersive station to complement existing railway sets. The creators, both passionate LEGO train enthusiasts, have poured their love for locomotives into every brick, hoping to see this vision become an official set.The post This LEGO Grand Central Station Set is the Ultimate Tribute to NYCs Iconic Landmark first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Space-inspired BR-03 Astro watch depicts FPV of Earth, Moon, and Mars from International Space Station
    www.yankodesign.com
Theres something about space exploration and watches that keeps us interested. The SpaceOne Tellurium, LUNAR1,622 by Sebastien Colen, Caviar Stargazer X-Edition,and theApollo Instruments DSKY Moonwatch have us longing for the next space-inspired timepiece. Thankfully, Bell & Ross has not kept us waiting long with their latest BR-03 Astro watch, whichis an ode to space exploration. The timepiece is highlighted by the actual movement of the celestial bodies Earth, Moon, and Mars across the dial representing the minutes and hours respectively. No doubt this is a deep connecting element for the wearer whos curious about the intricacies of the universe. The 60 seconds are represented by the small satellite moving in the orbit across the earth which is fascinating in its own right.Designer: Bell & RossThe Cosmic Dance of Celestial BodiesThe limited-edition space watch by the French watchmaker who is known for its aviation and instruments of flight-inspired designs, has a distinct space travel vibe. The dial of the BR-03 Astro mimics the view from the International Space Station as if youre looking in the vast expanse from the cupola viewing port, just like the astronauts do. That explains the Earth on the front center eclipsing the Moon, then we have the red planet basking in the distance, followed by the emptiness of the Milky Way represented by the blue aventurine glass backdrop. The latter is the trusted material of choice for horology to create the depth of the universe. The level of detail is unprecedented in the squared-off timepiece with the clouds above the Earth, the Moons crates, the geological scarring of the small little Mars, or the panels of the orbiting satellite. The micro-blasted black ceramic body of the futuristic-looking watch carries the signature B&R design philosophy that has made its square body superimposed with the round dial so popular. That knuckled crown at 3 oclock with the exposed screws brings the element of industrial design aesthetic to the timepiece.Limited Edition Timepiece of 999 UnitsThis 100-meter water-resistant horology piece has a sapphire crystal curved with a spherical cap in the middle for a better view of the Earth in relief. Measuring 41mm wide and 11.5 mm thick, the ceramic body carries the vastness of the space beyond the dial. Under the hood, the BR-03 Astro has the self-winding BR.CAL-327 movement (operational frequency of 28,800 vibrations/hour) that we earlier saw in the BR 03 Horizon watch as well. This gives the watch a run time of 54 hours before it automatically winds again.Complementing the darker hue of the watch is the black rubber synthetic strap with a PVD-treated buckle. Bell & Ross BR-03 Horizon watch is limited to just 999 units and carries a price tag of $4,800. For that price, the space-inspired watch is an absolute recommend for any astronomy fanatics who have good taste in horology! The post Space-inspired BR-03 Astro watch depicts FPV of Earth, Moon, and Mars from International Space Station first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Minimalist wooden lamp showcases contrasting properties of pine
    www.yankodesign.com
Wood has always been a darling of designers. In addition to its unique texture that differs by trees, it also has unique grains and stripes that add to the individuality of each block. But even the same tree can exhibit different and sometimes opposite properties, making each tree as multi-faceted as human beings. Such varied properties are not that easy to display harmoniously in a single design, but thats exactly what this lamp pulls off with aplomb.Although it almost looks like inspired by a certain sport, this wooden desk lamp is really all about nature, particularly its use of a particular kind of wood. In fact, it uses the same kind of material for both discrete parts of the lamp, exuding a kind of beauty that can only come from a creative composition of opposing design elements.Designer: John TreeThe base of this lamp is a block of solid pine wood, providing a robust anchor as well as a home for the electronics. The shade, on the other hand, is also made from pine but comes in the form of a thin veneer that was also purposely cut to show off a rather active grain pattern. These two are joined through a single slot cut into the block of pine, doing away with the need for complex mechanisms or visible fasteners.Solid and bulky, gentle and graceful, these two parts of the lamp convey the identity of pine trees, which is a favorite among Finnish designers where this Hoop Lamp comes from. The design is an exercise in minimalism, using nothing but the essentials in both substance and form, drawing beauty from its natural properties without the help of additional details and embellishments.Because of its thinness, the pine veneer effectively softens the light coming from the bulb inside the hoop. At the same time, the grains of the wood create a play of light and shadow that will differ from lamp to lamp, making each item unique and personal. All of these without doing more than just utilizing woods own nature to great effect. There is also a more subtle form of contrast to be found in the choice of materials. While both are made of pine, the two parts also age at different paces and produce different colors over time. The solid pine will have a more uniform rich honey tone over time, for example. Along with the nicks and marks that the lamp may collect over years of use, these blemishes actually add to the designs uniqueness rather than reduce its appeal. The post Minimalist wooden lamp showcases contrasting properties of pine first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Motorola Razr Plus Paris Hilton edition tries to make hot pink hot again
    www.yankodesign.com
The day of hearts might be over, but the colors associated with it are everlasting. Red and pink have their seasons, especially when it comes to trends in the mobile market. Although not exactly a hot item, the hottest hue of pink is such a rare sight that it almost always becomes the talk of the town whenever a pink phone is launched. There is perhaps no other phone brand that knows that better than Motorola, and its bringing one of its most iconic pink brands back with a little help from a very pink celebrity.Pink overload like the above is exactly what youll get with the new Limited Edition Razr+ foldable phone designed as a collab with hotel heiress and media personality Paris Hilton. No need for stickers or cases that will bulk up a relatively thick phone, because this very pink foldable will probably give you all the pink you could ever want and then some. And by some, we mean more pink accessories to match!Designer: MotorolaOf all the mobile phone manufacturers in history, Motorola is arguably the one with the most experience with pink. Part of the campaign that made its ultra-thin RAZR V3 clamshell launched more than two decades ago was its Hot Pink variant, very rare and very chic in that era. Of course, Paris Hilton, whose fame was skyrocketing back then, was at hand to associate herself with the phone and vice versa. Who better to boost the new Razrs presence than this fashionista? If youre a hot fan of hot pink then this limited edition Motorola Razr Plus might be for you. Yes, it comes preloaded with tons of Paris Hiltons wallpaper and special ringtones, but if you have no care for those, you can easily remove them and still keep that engraved Hot Pink branding on the phones hinge. Then again, for an additional $200 for this special edition, you might be more than convinced to keep them for posteritys sake. This pink edition also comes with, you guessed it, a pink case to keep your foldable phone protected on the outside without losing too much of that special color. Its not as vibrant as the phones natural color, of course, but thats because of the more muted vegan leather texture that youll get in exchange. With the, yes, pink strap options, youll be turning the Razr Plus into a tiny pink purse, at least when its folded up.Its quite curious that Motorola would suddenly launch this Paris Hilton edition of the Razr Plus phone, without at least launching a new model yet. Granted, this particular segment of the already niche foldable phone market hasnt been getting that much attention lately, so anything that would spark interest will probably help, even if its a blindingly pink color. The post Motorola Razr Plus Paris Hilton edition tries to make hot pink hot again first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Swiveling and rotating USB-C cable reduces strain and damage
    www.yankodesign.com
Although wireless charging technologies are finally making headway into the mobile industry, the most reliable and fastest way to charge still remains a good old-fashioned cable. Thats not even considering how the same accessory can be used to transfer data between devices quickly, a lot faster than even the fastest WLAN method. Unfortunately, innovation in this market has pretty much stalled except in new USB standards, but even then accessory manufacturers have been slow to adopt new specs. The design of cables themselves, however, hasnt seen much action, aside from a handful that try to alleviate users pet peeves with these tangling products. One of those is how quickly these cables get damaged, especially near the head or connector because of how often they get bent out of shape, increasing their wear and tear with each use. Short of extremely flexible cables, this design has a rather creative solution that allows the USB-C connector to flip and twist so you can position your device in a way thats comfortable for you, not for the cable.Designer: Sanwa SupplyWhile USB cables themselves are quite resilient, the area where the cable connects with the USB plug is often subjected to more strain than any other part. USB cables often extend from a device or charger in a fixed and rigid direction, but the way we hold or handle devices connected to them often forces them to bend, sometimes quite sharply. This increases the tension and, therefore, the strain, causing cables to get damaged faster than they normally would. This USB-C cable design solves this by simply allowing the connector to bend and twist as needed. It can swivel as much as 180 degrees and it can even rotate 360 degrees. The USB-C standard itself is reversible, but that doesnt mean you can twist them. By giving the cable more freedom of movement, it reduces the strain on cables, prolonging their life. The cable even has a nylon-braided cover, adding to its longevity. This flexible USB-C cable supports 240W charging, which is faster than what most wired charging technologies offer today. This makes it future-proof, presuming it survives that long. Admittedly, it isnt the only USB cable with this trick, but its so far the only one capable of data transfer in addition to fast charging speeds. Unfortunately, it caps at USB 2.0 speeds, which is around 480mbps maximum. Its not entirely slow, but not the fastest either. As attractive as this design might be, this USB-C cable isnt available globally just yet. Youll have to buy it directly from the supplier and find a way to have it shipped to you, which makes that mouth-watering sub-$20 price tag pretty much moot. The post Swiveling and rotating USB-C cable reduces strain and damage first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Paper-based prescription bottle can help heal both patients and the planet
    www.yankodesign.com
Thanks to its affordability and ease of production, plastic has pretty much made its way into every aspect of modern life. Thats not just limited to consumer electronics, furniture, or tableware, but even medicine and supplements all use this material. According to a 2019 study, there will have been over 9 million plastic pill bottles in the market by now, and many of these end up in landfills rather than recycled properly. The trend these days in packaging is to substitute plastic with more sustainable materials, whether its recycled plastic or paper. Thats a bit harder to do in the medical field, which has stricter requirements than simply replacing plastic. Fortunately, it seems that the wait is finally over and the industrys first sustainable prescription pill bottle made with 100% recyclable paper.Designer: Parcel HealthLike with every bit of plastic, those iconic orange pill bottles look harmless, even though their contents may or may not be. While some have their prescriptions refilled using the same bottle, most others simply throw away theirs once theyre done. Thats especially true for supplements and pills that dont get refilled but still come in plastic bottles.Tully Tubes are trying to prove that there is no reason for this status quo to remain. Made from 100% sustainably sourced paper, the cylindrical bottles are certified by the US FDA, among other agencies, for use in food and medicine packaging. That said, not all of the bottle is made of paper. The child-resistant cap is still made from plastic, but at least uses post-consumer recycled plastic to offset the environmental impact.Of course, you cant just have a paper bottle and call it a day, and this design takes a few more steps to make it appropriate for this particular use. It is, for example, resistant to water, humidity, and heat, thanks to a three-layer construction. It is covered with a food-safe and compostable coating to protect it from water and the elements as well. And when its time to throw it away, a proprietary pull tab lets you separate the paper and plastic parts so you can safely compost the bottle itself while the cap gets sent to a recycling plant. While such a revolutionary sustainable pill bottle complies with pharmaceutical requirements, it also opens up opportunities that regular plastic bottles dont offer. Because they are disposable and recyclable, it is easier to invest in customizing the appearance of the bottles, like printing designs and characters to further engage customers, something companies might not be willing to do with plastic bottles because of their cost. The post Paper-based prescription bottle can help heal both patients and the planet first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Game Boy-inspired keyboard is a 3D enclosure around a Logitech keyboard
    www.yankodesign.com
The retro design wave isnt just about reselling old products or making them fit for modern use. It has also sparked the spirit of designers to apply those old designs to other products, sometimes unrelated to gaming. Of course, its a lot easier to reimagine gadgets in those decades-old aesthetics, but that doesnt mean the process is any easier. This 3D printed keyboard, for example, takes its cues from the classic Nintendo Game Boy, known for its blocky beige body and shiny plastic buttons. Unlike other retro keyboard projects, however, this has one rather unique appeal in that it doesnt even require you to assemble your own keyboard. You can simply take an existing Logitech K380 and slap it into the chassis, instantly letting you relive the 90s in a slightly different way.Designer: The Lesser The BesserThe keyboards in the late 80s to early 90s definitely had their own peculiar charm, but one might always wonder what could have been if the same design language used for gaming handhelds and consoles were used for these computer peripherals. 8BitDo answered that question with the Retro Mechanical Keyboards that take their inspiration from the older Nintendo Entertainment System, more fondly remembered as the NES, also called Famicom in Japan.Key Boy follows the same train of thought but with two major differences. First, it uses a handheld gaming device for reference, the iconic OG Game Boy. More importantly, however, it isnt an independent keyboard itself but is simply a housing for a Logitech wireless keyboard. That means almost anyone can easily have their own Key Boy, presuming they get their hands on the 3D printed chassis. The story of this Game Boy keyboard is just as interesting as the design itself, including the decision to simplify the design by using an existing off-the-shelf keyboard. There are also a few interesting details about the keyboards design, such as the removable cartridge that exposes the keyboards battery cover. The power switch slider is also designed like a Tetris block, though you wouldnt be able to tell at a glance. The narrative also shares a few tricks to pull off an authentic appearance, like using UV glue to create the domed shape of otherwise flat keys. The printout also intentionally has a bit of rough texture along the sides, not exactly like the original Game Boys. Its definitely an interesting project that might become a retail product, presuming, of course, Nintendo doesnt set its lawyers on it.The post Game Boy-inspired keyboard is a 3D enclosure around a Logitech keyboard first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • This Temporary School In Nairobi Was Designed As A Small Village Using Reusable Materials
    www.yankodesign.com
Urko Snchez Architects has designed a collection of classrooms for a school in Nairobi, Kenya. These classrooms are enveloped in wooden logs to harmonize with their forested environment. The project by Urko Snchez Architects, located in forest clearings, features a series of temporary classrooms organized as a small village to serve the existing Nairobi Waldorf School. The construction system was conceived to be adaptable and collaborative, engaging children, parents, and teachers in the process. Whenever feasible, materials from dismantled classrooms were recycled wooden floors and walls were transformed into parapets, and roof tiles were repurposed to define path boundaries, among other uses. This approach seamlessly blended creativity, sustainability, and community involvement, resulting in a truly unique educational environment. The main concept was to create a village for children hidden in the forest, fostering a strong connection with nature, said the studio. The project prioritized cost-effective and reusable materials like wood, soil, and forest leaves to minimize environmental impact, it added. Classrooms were dispersed in forest clearings to preserve native trees and avoid disruption.Designer: Urko Snchez ArchitectsThe 3,162-square-meter project features multiple classrooms with distinctive overhanging wooden roofs inspired by the areas traditional architecture. These structures include a preexisting, elevated building that was converted to provide extra classrooms and services and is supported by a framework of tall logs. Due to a 10-year lease on the land, Urko Snchez Architects designed the buildings to last for a decade, using lightweight, cost-effective, and reclaimed materials that can be reused. This approach includes using wooden logs of varying heights to encircle the base of each classroom and reclaimed roof tiles that have been repurposed to create pathways around the site.Polycarbonate sheets surround a couple of the teaching spaces, building transparent walls that pull light into the insides. Certain sections of the polycarbonate walls were filled with reclaimed soil and natural leaves to promote biodiversity. The design addressed the temporary 10-year lease by prioritizing cost-effective and quick construction methods, the studio said. Recycled materials were creatively repurposed, emphasizing sustainability and collaboration. Children, parents, and teachers participated in the soil-filling process, fostering a sense of community, it concluded.Winding around the classrooms, sheltered corridors offer a pathway to the interiors, ensuring easy access for students. These interiors are designed to provide children with well-lit and inviting workspaces that are enhanced by earthy tones. This natural ambiance is achieved through the use of materials sourced from the environment, creating a warm and harmonious learning atmosphere. The thoughtful use of natural materials enhances the aesthetic appeal while also contributing to a calming and productive space for the children. The post This Temporary School In Nairobi Was Designed As A Small Village Using Reusable Materials first appeared on Yanko Design.
