  • Samsung Is Working On Worlds First Quad-Fold Smartphone To Directly Challenge Huawei and TCL
    www.yankodesign.com
Representational imageSamsung has filed a patent for what could be the most ambitious foldable design to datea quad-fold smartphone featuring four interconnected panels and three hinges. The documentation, labeled under the title ELECTRONIC DEVICE INCLUDING BENDABLE DISPLAY, signals Samsungs continued dominance in foldable display innovation, staking a claim beyond the current tri-fold concepts from competitors such as Huawei and TCL.As reported by SamMobile, the patent reveals a device structured with four panels connected horizontally via three hinges, each supporting a continuous flexible display. Unlike outward-folding designs seen in some of Huaweis prototypes, Samsung opts for an inward-folding configuration. This format shields the display when folded, which could mitigate issues related to screen durabilitystill one of the major concerns for foldable devices. Such a design would likely make use of Samsungs proprietary Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), which has progressively improved since its debut on the Galaxy Z Fold series, offering enhanced scratch resistance and reduced crease visibility.Designer: SamsungRepresentational imageIts all in the layout. Three hinges divide four distinct panels, meaning the device could morph through multiple configurationspocket-friendly phone, dual-fold for notifications, tri-fold for tablet duties, and finally, a full unfold for productivity overkill. Technically, however, this quad-fold concept introduces substantial complexity. Managing the mechanical strain across three hinges, while preserving uniform display tension and longevity, will be challenging. However, Samsung Displays experience with flexible OLEDs and hinge durability testing could make this feasible. If each panel measures approximately 6 inches diagonally, the fully unfolded device could reach 12 inches or more, eclipsing even tablets like the iPad Pro and approaching the size of compact laptops while retaining the portability of a smartphone when folded. This device is sort of a potential shift in the usability paradigm. A quad-fold would allow a variety of usage modes. Users could adopt a single-panel phone mode, a dual-panel intermediate, a tri-panel for tablet-like applications, and the full quad-panel layout for productivity scenarios, multitasking, or immersive media consumption. Such versatility could address the current limitations of foldables, where most devices primarily offer two modesphone and tabletwithout much nuance in between. And lets not pretend Samsung isnt strategically nudging Apple here. Cupertino hasnt even officially admitted it wants to fold anything, and Samsungs already diagramming folding sandwiches. Huaweis tri-fold prototype might hit the market first, but Samsung seems to be saying, Why stop at three?Image Credits: World Intellectual Property OrganizationBut before you start planning your next upgrade, a sobering note: this might be little more than strategic patenting. Samsung has a history of filing forward-thinking designs to build a defensive moat, not necessarily to ship every concept. Still, the fact that these schematics exist, complete with hinge mechanics and potential use-case scenarios, tells us the company is at least exploring the limits of foldable tech far beyond its existing Z Fold lineup.Samsungs quad-fold also subtly outmaneuvers Huawei and TCL by focusing on inward folding. Why does this matter? Huaweis outward-folding designs, while flashy, expose the flexible display to the wildscratches, dust, and the occasional existential dread of dropping it. Samsungs inward-fold protects the fragile display like a medieval knight shielding its heart. With Samsung Display likely at the helm of this engineering feat, expect Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) iterations to reinforce this massive canvas, possibly with even better scratch resistance and less visible crease lines than the current Z Fold 5.Representational imageThe real question is whether Samsung will commercialize this in the Galaxy Z Fold family or launch it as a new series entirely. A Galaxy Z Flex Ultra, perhaps? There was a news-nugget in the past that Samsung would call this the Galaxy W because of the letters 4-line shape, but it seems like Samsungs ditched that nomenclature. However, considering Samsungs playbook, we might see a tri-fold device emerge firstsince the same patent also showcases a triple-panel, dual-hinge design with USB-C and triple cameras. This could be Samsungs immediate answer to Huawei and TCL while the quad-fold remains in the lab, terrifying hinge designers worldwide. At the end of the day, Samsungs quad-fold is just a concept, although the highly detailed patent leads me to believe theyve got a working prototype somewhere in their R&D division thats just waiting to *ahem* get left behind in a cab the way Googles engineers tend to do with their phones. The design, at least on paper, is complex and probably hideously expensive (think Galaxy Z Fold Ultra pricing, $2,000+ easy), poised to frustrate and delight tech enthusiasts in equal measure. Whether it dethrones anyone or simply creates a new throne entirely, Samsungs ready to bend the rules, literally.Representational imageThe post Samsung Is Working On Worlds First Quad-Fold Smartphone To Directly Challenge Huawei and TCL first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Why Most Wireless Chargers Still Suck (And How The Mag 360 Quietly Solves The One Big Problem)
    www.yankodesign.com
I have a controversial opinion around wireless charging it sucks. What is the point of wireless charging technology if we still need separate chargers for separate devices? Sure, weve banished most cables, but at the cost of carrying around three separate chargers just to survive the day a wireless charger for a phone doesnt charge your Apple Watch, and the charger for the Apple Watch doesnt charge your AirPods. That bittersweet chaos is exactly where the Mag 360 Qi2 3-in-1 Foldable Travel Charging Station from ADAM elements steps in, and frankly, it might be one of the few charging gadgets that actually respects your sanity. The Mag 360 hits you first with simplicity: one dock, three devices, zero fuss. Built to handle an iPhone, an Apple Watch, and AirPods (MagSafe included, naturally), this station condenses the usual cable spaghetti into a folded metal-and-fabric rectangle that easily slips into your bag.Designer: ADAM ElementsClick Here to Buy Now: $83.3 $119 (30% off, use coupon code 30YANKOMG360). Hurry, deal ends in 48-hours.The 3-in-1 charging apparatus sports a slick, sturdy, foldable design that shuts into a puck-shaped format when not in use. Open it up and youre greeted with a Z-shaped silhouette that greets you with not 2, but 3 different charging zones. One primary one on top with built-in MagSafe for your iPhone, one on the back for an Apple Watch, and one on the base, for either your AirPods or a second smartphone with wireless charging capabilities. One charger. One cable. Simple and sophisticated, just like I expect my charging solutions in 2025 to be.Dual 15W fast-charging zones on the top and the bottom mean your iPhone and even a second Qi2-enabled phone wont be left crawling at 5W speeds like most budget-friendly docks. Were talking proper fast charging, where you can top up two phones at once without one hogging all the juice. Considering how many of us swap between personal and work devices daily, this is a quiet but crucial win. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch gets its own attention with a stand that doesnt lock you into a single viewing angle its stepless adjustment lets you tilt it to your liking, whether youre watching it double as a nightstand clock or just admiring the charging animation for kicks. The base rotates 360 (explaining the name Mag 360), allowing you to quickly pivot the charger to face you or face away when you dont want to stare at unnecessary notifications. Its smooth but reassuringly stable, letting you spin the entire setup to face you without threatening to dump your devices onto the floor. The magnetic charging zone for the phone also doubles as a mini stand, propping up your iPhone at an angle perfect for doom scrolling, binge-watching, or peeking at notifications while you pretend to focus on work. The rear-axis stand adjusts as well, giving you fine-tuned control over height and tilt, adapting easily to hotel desks, coffee shop tables, or cramped airplane trays.Aesthetically, the Mag 360 avoids the trap of looking too techy. Instead, it leans into a more industrial-modern vibe with its metal skeleton paired with a heat-resistant, stain-proof fabric that feels soft but tough much like the best travel gear. The craftsmanship is unmistakable, and when folded, it gives off the vibe of a pocket-sized mechanical puzzle rather than an obvious charging dock. Its the kind of thing you could pull out in an airport lounge without feeling like youre setting up a workstation in public.Hidden beneath all that polish is a solid set of safety measures. Foreign object detection, overcharge protection, overheating control, and short-circuit safeguards work quietly in the background exactly where they should be. No loud flashing LEDs or alerts, just the quiet confidence that your devices arent being cooked or drained unnecessarily.Folded down, its quite literally the size of a puck, making it far more bag-friendly than the multi-brick charger setups weve all accepted as normal. Yet, when unfolded, it opens like a tiny stage set for your devices organized, elegant, and surprisingly satisfying to interact with.My ultimate goal is for wireless chargers to be as invisible as air, charging devices regardless of where they are and how many they are. Obviously, thats a wacky utopia that probably wont exist for a while, but until then, the Mag 360 is honestly versatile enough to feel like its making the best of the tech we have today. I used to loathe carrying multiple chargers with me, so the idea of having one dock do everything is heaven-sent. Whether for charging devices, stowing them away when not in use, or even relying on the MagSafe feature to use the Mag 360 as a makeshift stand for watching YouTube or TikTok!Click Here to Buy Now: $83.3 $119 (30% off, use coupon code 30YANKOMG360). • Samsungs New Bespoke AI Jet Ultra Pushes Cordless Vacuum Boundaries
    www.yankodesign.com
Samsung has introduced a new flagship cleaning device that has caught my attention with some remarkable technical specifications. The Bespoke AI Jet Ultra enters the high-end vacuum market with performance metrics that, if they hold up in real-world testing, could represent a significant advancement in cordless cleaning technology. As someone whos tested countless vacuums over the years, Ive learned that manufacturer specifications often require a healthy dose of skepticism. Power claims, in particular, need careful examination since raw suction doesnt always translate to superior cleaning performance.Designer: SamsungWhat makes this announcement particularly interesting is the specific metric Samsung is highlighting: 400W of suction power. This figure represents a significant leap beyond what weve seen in the cordless vacuum space and warrants a closer look at what it might mean for real-world cleaning performance. The power comes from Samsungs new HexaJet Motor, which utilizes a hexagonal stator structure and optimized airflow design for maximum efficiency. While impressive on paper, the true test will be how this translates to actual cleaning capability across different surfaces and debris types.Battery life has long been a limitation for cordless vacuums, but Samsung appears to have made substantial progress here. The Bespoke AI Jet Ultra comes with two batteries a 100-minute large-capacity option and a 60-minute lightweight alternative providing up to 160 minutes of combined runtime. This far exceeds the typical 60-minute maximum found in most premium cordless models. Samsung also claims the batteries will retain 70% of their performance after 500 charging cycles and backs them with a 2-year warranty.Filtration also receives significant attention, with Samsung implementing a multi-layered HEPA system that captures 99.999% of particles as small as 0.3m. This level of filtration would make it particularly suitable for allergy sufferers and pet owners concerned about airborne particles. The system is designed to minimize dust recirculation, a common issue with less sophisticated vacuum designs.Samsungs emphasis on AI cleaning appears more substantial than I initially suspected. The AI Cleaning Mode 2.0 can detect six different cleaning environments through brush load and air pressure sensors, automatically adjusting suction power and brush speed accordingly. This includes differentiating between carpet types and recognizing when the vacuum is cleaning corners. Samsung claims this intelligent power management reduces battery consumption by 21%.The vacuum includes a cleaning station for hands-off dust collection a feature weve seen in previous Samsung models that eliminates one of the less pleasant aspects of vacuum maintenance. Additional accessories include an Active Dual Brush designed specifically for carpets and a Slim LED Brush+ for corners and hard-to-reach areas. An LCD display provides notifications and settings control, giving users visual feedback on the vacuums operation. This kind of interface has become increasingly common on premium vacuums, though its practical utility varies depending on implementation. The Bespoke AI Jet Ultra launched globally on March 31, 2025, as part of Samsungs expanded 2025 Bespoke AI Home Appliances lineup. The vacuum integrates with Samsungs broader AI Home ecosystem, connecting with other SmartThings-enabled appliances for what the company describes as seamless smart home management. With a retail price of $1,099 (1,119), it positions itself firmly at the premium end of the cordless vacuum market. This represents a significant investment for most households, comparable to high-end models from Dyson and other premium brands. The question consumers will need to answer is whether the claimed performance advantages justify this substantial price tag.Jeong Seung Moon, Executive Vice President of Samsungs Digital Appliances R&D, has positioned the vacuum as building on the UL-verified Bespoke Jet AI legacy, calling it a game changer for smart home cleaning. While executive statements naturally tend toward hyperbole, the specifications do suggest Samsung has made meaningful technical advances. While Samsungs technical specifications are impressive on paper, the true measure of any vacuum is its real-world cleaning performance across various surface types and debris conditions. Many factors beyond raw power affect cleaning efficacy brush design, airflow patterns, maneuverability, and ease of use all play crucial roles. Previous Samsung models have demonstrated strengths in effortless gliding and deep cleaning capabilities, but theyve faced stiff competition from brands offering similar features at lower price points. The vacuum cleaning market has seen numerous innovations that looked impressive in marketing materials but failed to deliver proportional improvements in actual cleaning performance. While high suction power is important, it is just one element of effective vacuum design. The way that power is channeled through the cleaning head and how effectively the brush engages with different surfaces often matters more than raw suction numbers. For now, Samsungs new cordless vacuum represents an intriguing development in the space one that could potentially reset performance expectations if the real-world results match the specifications. But as with any cleaning technology, the proof will be in the performance, not the numbers. Until independent testing confirms how these impressive specifications translate to cleaning effectiveness, the bold technical claims remain exactly that claims waiting for validation. The post Samsungs New Bespoke AI Jet Ultra Pushes Cordless Vacuum Boundaries first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • This Harmonious Retreat On Awaji Island Is Designed To Accomodate Both Humans & Dogs Comfortably
    www.yankodesign.com
Japanese studio 1110 Office for Architecture has crafted a rental villa on Awaji Island featuring a ring of rooms encircling a courtyard that also serves as an indoor dog run. Situated near the islands northern coast, this holiday home is named Necklace Villa, a nod to its circular layout where rooms are primarily connected rather than divided by walls. As the area experiences rapid development, giving the island a theme park-like ambiance, the studio sought to design a home that respects the sites lasting natural attributes. The result is a secluded, tiered ring of subtle structures surrounding a sloping courtyard.Awaji Island is currently undergoing rapid changes, said founder Hiroto Kawaguchi. In response to the landscape becoming more theme park-like, we considered the question of what aspects will remain unchanged, and how architecture should respond to this transformation. We aimed to block the views from nearby houses and the passing cars on the road, ensuring that only the natural environment, such as the sky, greenery, and sea, remains visible, he concluded.Designer: 1110 Office for ArchitectureNecklace Villa consists of two L-shaped structures descending from the southeastern and northwestern corners, enclosing a central courtyard and aligning with the sites natural slope. A sheltered wooden walkway encircles this courtyard, forming a semi-outdoor loop for dogs, with multiple access points for both humans and dogs. The interior mirrors the stepped design, with floors and windows rising to reduce visibility from nearby roads and prevent dogs from barking at passing cars. There arent a lot of walls in the private bedroom and bathroom areas, while the living, dining, and kitchen spaces use steps as dividers, allowing easy movement for dogs. The characteristic of courtyard house being closed on the outside and open on the inside was deconstructed by changing the scale of individual rooms, Kawaguchi said. The rooms facing the road gradually raise the floor height, eliminating the feeling of car traffic and allowing both humans and dogs to live harmoniously without walls.Inside the courtyard and throughout most of Necklace Villas interiors, pale cedar planks have been meticulously installed, offering a warm and inviting ambiance that contrasts with the villas external elements. These cedar planks create a serene, natural aesthetic, enhancing the connection to the villas outdoor spaces. In contrast, the exterior walls and roof are clad in rich, reddish-brown steel panels. This choice of material serves a dual purpose it pays homage to the traditional tiled roofs seen across the surrounding region, and it protects against the harsh, salty winds prevalent along the coastal area. This thoughtful combination of materials ensures both aesthetic harmony with the local architecture and durability in the face of environmental challenges, making Necklace Villa a thoughtfully designed retreat that respects its natural and cultural context. The post This Harmonious Retreat On Awaji Island Is Designed To Accomodate Both Humans & Dogs Comfortably first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Philippe Starcks Whimsical Hotel Is A Nine-Story Tower With A Mansion In The Sky
    www.yankodesign.com
Designer Philippe Starck introduced the Maison Heler hotel, a striking nine-story structure in Metz, France, featuring a 19th-century mansion seemingly perched atop it. Entirely envisioned by Starck, the hotel intends to narrate the whimsical tale of Manfred Heler, a fictional character whose mansion has been lofted nine stories high.Manfred Heler has inherited his parents beautiful house, said Stark. As an orphan, he finds himself all alone, in this mansion surrounded by a large park. Everythings going well for him until he starts to get bored. To cope with this boredom, he tries to invent everything, he continued. An extraordinarily rigorous and inventive man, he doesnt necessarily succeed in everything he undertakes, but its always done with intelligence and poetry, guided by a naive desire to create meticulously at all costs.Designer: Philippe StarckThis entirely metal-clad mansion now sits atop a nine-story monolithic tower, housing a restaurant, bar, and event spaces. In Starcks imaginative narrative, Manfred Heler was inside the mansion when it unexpectedly ascended into the sky. The interior design aims to capture the essence of 19th-century style, reflecting the fictional ambiance of Helers home. Starck incorporated whimsical objects throughout the mansion, each crafted to enhance its surreal atmosphere. These include unique items like a crystal hammer, plaster anvils, double-ended axes, and inverted rocking chairs, all designed to evoke curiosity and wonder within the spaces. Its springtime, said Starck. Hes daydreaming in his armchair. Suddenly, the earth begins to tremble. He doesnt understand whats happening. He looks around and realizes, to his aghast, that hes going up in the air, along with his park, his house, and his armchair. He climbs and climbs and climbs until the shaking stops. Then theres silence. Manfred is high above the city. His house has been extruded: as if a cookie-cutter had arrived from below, cut off the Earths cap, and mounted it vertically, he concluded.Beneath the mansion, the unassuming tower includes 104 bedroom suites. These rooms provide a stark contrast to the mansions eclectic style, featuring large windows, exposed concrete ceilings, and plain white walls, which can be mostly obscured by pale, full-height curtains. The hotels ground floor hosts the reception and a restaurant named La Cuisine de Rose, honoring Helers fictional lover. Unlike the mansion, the restaurant boasts bright interiors complemented by dark furniture and opens onto a terrace adorned with trees. According to Starck, the rooms have an almost spartan spirit. He says they are stripped of any superficiality, where each material asserts its own color: the white of cotton, the grey of concrete on the ceiling and walls. The post Philippe Starcks Whimsical Hotel Is A Nine-Story Tower With A Mansion In The Sky first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Coolify HOLO Fan Brings Eye-Catching Holographic Displays to Your PC
    www.yankodesign.com
PC customization has reached new heights in recent years, with enthusiasts constantly seeking fresh ways to personalize their rigs. While RGB lighting strips and transparent cases have become standard fare, these modifications often lack true personalization. Static designs might showcase your components, but they dont really express your unique style or interests. Enter the Coolify HOLO fan an innovative cooling solution that doubles as a customizable display to make your PC truly one-of-a-kind.This clever device combines the essential function of a case fan with cutting-edge visual technology to create what appears to be floating 3D images inside your PC. While not technically a true hologram (despite the marketing), the effect is nonetheless striking and guaranteed to turn heads. The fan uses a phenomenon called persistence of vision, the same principle that makes movie frames blend together into smooth motion, to create the illusion of floating images as its high-speed blades spin with precisely timed LED patterns.Designer: CoolifyThe magic happens through a single row of 96 LEDs embedded in the fan blades that flash in carefully synchronized patterns as they rotate. Your brain perceives these rapid light pulses as a continuous image, creating the illusion of a floating display. The effect works best with circular images that complement the fans rotation, though you can upload virtually any content you want, from animated logos to custom artwork or even short video clips, making each setup truly unique to its owner. At 120mm, the HOLO fan fits standard PC case mounting points, making installation straightforward for most builders. The 4.1-inch display area provides ample space for your custom visuals without compromising cooling performance, though the low DPI wont be as detailed as the marketing images would have you believe. Unlike many PC modifications that sacrifice function for form, the Coolify fan maintains effective airflow while adding visual flair, ensuring your components stay cool even during intense gaming sessions or demanding creative work.Setting up your custom display happens through the fans WiFi connectivity, with the sole cable connection used for power only. Simply connect to the fan through the dedicated Coolify app, upload your chosen images or animations, and watch them come to life inside your PC case. The only physical connection required is the power cable, eliminating the need for complex wiring or controller boxes that might clutter your carefully planned build. The visual impact is particularly impressive in darkened rooms, where the illuminated images seem to float mysteriously within your PC case. For streamers and content creators who frequently showcase their setups, the HOLO fan offers a dynamic way to display channel logos, animations, or other branded content. Gamers might choose to display faction symbols from their favorite titles, while creative professionals could showcase their artwork or company logos during client presentations. Rather than settling for generic RGB effects or static designs, builders can now incorporate dynamic, changeable content that reflects their current interests, projects, or moods. The post Coolify HOLO Fan Brings Eye-Catching Holographic Displays to Your PC first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Nintendos Switch 2 Launch Is Proof That You Dont Need New Tech & Flashy Keynotes Every Year
    www.yankodesign.com
Back in 2016, the original Nintendo Switch felt like a revelation. Not because it packed bleeding-edge specs or boasted VR-ready horsepower, but because it just made sense. A home console you could pull out of its dock and carry with you it was weird, playful, and perfectly Nintendo. Nearly a decade later, todays announcement of the Switch 2 proves that Nintendo still plays by its own rules, taking its sweet time while the rest of the industry sprints on an annual hamster wheel.Nintendo dropped the Switch 2 reveal without a fireworks-laden event or a billion-dollar livestream. Just a quietly confident YouTube video showing off the hardware in clean, minimalist shots, motion graphics, and those now-iconic silhouetted hands. No theatrics, no overblown stage demos. Yet, within hours, the video racked up half a million views. Its the kind of flex that only comes when you know your audience trusts you implicitly.Designer: NintendoAnd why wouldnt they? The original Switch, despite being underpowered compared to the PlayStation and Xbox crowd, remained sold out for nearly a year post-launch. In fact, even in 2025, its still thriving, buoyed by Nintendos near-flawless first-party catalog. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Breath of the Wild, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate these games still feel fresh to new players and veterans alike. Nintendo wasnt chasing specs back then, and it certainly isnt now.The Switch 2 does bring upgrades, but you wont find Nintendo trying to win a teraflop arms race. The handheld now sports a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD with HDR and up to 120fps refresh rates. Dock it, and youll get up to 4K resolution, complete with a much-needed cooling fan to keep things stable during long sessions of Metroid Prime 4. Internally, it bumps up to 256GB of storage (though youll need MicroSD Express cards for expansion). Game Cards are sticking around but have been updated for faster read speeds a quiet nod to physical media diehards. The Joy-Con controllers are bigger and more comfortable, now featuring larger shoulder buttons and a new C button dedicated to GameChat Nintendos built-in voice chat and screen-sharing system. Yes, voice chat is finally here, native to the console, without the clunky smartphone app workaround. A microphone tucked into the top picks up voices clearly, even with background noise, and screen-sharing lets you show off your gameplay to friends in real time. Then theres the wildcard: mouse support. By sliding the Joy-Con along a flat surface, it doubles as a physical mouse. This mechanic already fuels new games like Drag x Drive, a Rocket League meets NBA Jam mashup that uses dual-mouse controls for surprisingly fluid movement and shooting. Even existing titles like Mario Party Jamboree and Metroid Prime 4 will take advantage of this feature, with players able to aim and interact more intuitively. And while the visual uplift is nice Zelda titles, for example, will get free 4K-enhanced Switch 2 Editions for Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers its the longevity of software that steals the spotlight. Nintendos library ages like fine wine, and the Switch 2 respects that. You dont have to repurchase everything; upgrade packs and enhanced editions are available, extending the life of beloved games without forcing you to start over. The new console isnt arriving alone. Launching June 5th, it brings along heavy-hitters like Mario Kart World, featuring 24-player races and free-roam tracks. FromSoftware is throwing in The Duskbloods, a gothic action RPG exclusive, and even Kirby is making an open-world comeback. Plus, GameCube classics like F-Zero GX and The Wind Waker are returning, playable through the Switch 2s online service complete with a retro-inspired wireless GameCube controller.Where competitors race to push out yearly hardware iterations wrapped in billion-dollar spectacles, Nintendo is content releasing something only when its ready. The Switch 2 didnt need a massive keynote or a sprawling influencer campaign. It needed a quiet confidence, a respect for players, and the kind of design that serves people, not shareholders. The post Nintendos Switch 2 Launch Is Proof That You Dont Need New Tech & Flashy Keynotes Every Year first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Domino-Inspired Pendant Lamp Balances Artistic Form with Functional Flexibility
    www.yankodesign.com
Lighting fixtures have evolved far beyond their utilitarian origins to become pivotal design elements in contemporary interiors. The most compelling fixtures manage to harmonize form and function, becoming focal points that define a spaces character while providing essential illumination. Yet many designer lamps sacrifice adaptability for aesthetic impact, presenting stunning but static visual statements that cannot evolve with changing interior needs or personal preferences. The Domino pendant lamp by Kuzco Lighting, created in collaboration with Branch Creative, offers a refreshing departure from this limitation. Its ingenious design draws inspiration from the simple yet iconic game pieces that have captivated players for generations. The lamps composition of seven identical rectangular forms stacked in a linear arrangement creates a striking visual rhythm that commands attention while maintaining an understated elegance that complements rather than overwhelms its surroundings.Designer: Branch Creative for Kuzco LightingWhat truly distinguishes this pendant from conventional lighting fixtures is its remarkable adaptability. Each of the seven rectangular elements can be independently positioned and rotated, allowing for countless configurations that range from perfectly aligned to playfully askew. This flexibility enables the lamp to transform from a formal, symmetrical arrangement suitable for traditional settings to a dynamic, seemingly random composition that adds energy and visual interest to contemporary spaces. The thoughtful construction incorporates high-quality materials that enhance both the aesthetic appeal and functional performance. Crafted from steel with a frosted acrylic diffuser, the lamp projects a warm, inviting glow that softens the geometric precision of its form. The integrated LED technology provides 3000K warm white illumination, creating an atmosphere that feels both sophisticated and comfortable, perfect for spaces where both style and livability matter. The lamps dual-direction lighting is particularly noteworthy, casting illumination both upward and downward to create layered lighting effects that enhance spatial perception. This bidirectional light distribution allows the fixture to serve multiple lighting needs simultaneously, providing task lighting for activities below while washing ceilings with ambient light that expands the perceived volume of the space. This functional versatility makes it suitable for installation over dining tables, kitchen islands, or living areas. The lamps visual language speaks to current design trends while avoiding trendy excesses that might quickly date it. Its clean lines and geometric simplicity reference modernist principles, yet the playful configurability introduces an element of spontaneity that keeps it from feeling austere or cold. This balance of discipline and whimsy creates a timeless quality that will likely maintain its relevance as interior styles evolve around it.The post Domino-Inspired Pendant Lamp Balances Artistic Form with Functional Flexibility first appeared on Yanko Design.

Sony has just unveiled its new flagship OLED TV, the Bravia 8 II (also called Bravia 8 Mark II or XR80M2), as part of its 2025 TV lineup announcement on April 2, 2025. This new model succeeds the highly regarded A95L from 2023 and brings notable improvements in brightness and color reproduction while maintaining Sonys reputation for premium picture quality. Early hands-on impressions suggest this TV represents a meaningful evolution rather than a revolutionary change, but with enhancements that maintain Sonys position in the high-end TV market.Designer: SonyTwo Decades of BraviaThe Bravia 8 II arrives as Sony celebrates the 20th anniversary of its Bravia TV line, marking two decades of the brands presence in the television market. Despite speculation that Sony might adopt LGs new quad stack OLED panel technology, the company has instead chosen to continue with an improved version of Samsung Displays QD-OLED (Quantum Dot OLED) panel technology that powered the previous A95L model.Photo: SonyIn Sonys revamped naming scheme, the Bravia 8 II sits as the flagship OLED model, though not at the absolute top of Sonys entire lineup that position belongs to the Bravia 9 Mini LED TV. This naming convention represents Sonys current product hierarchy, with the II designation indicating this is the second iteration of the Bravia 8 series, though its worth noting that this model is positioned as the successor to the A95L rather than the original Bravia 8.The new TV will be available in 55-inch (55XR80M2) and 65-inch (65XR80M2) sizes, with no 77-inch model announced yet the 77-inch A95L will remain in production to fill that gap in the lineup. Sony has indicated that the Bravia 8 II will be more affordable than the A95L was at launch, potentially making this premium OLED technology accessible to more consumers.Display Technology and Picture PerformanceThe heart of the Bravia 8 II is its latest-generation QD-OLED panel coupled with Sonys advanced processing technologies. This combination delivers significant improvements in key performance areas. One of the most notable upgrades is in brightness capability. The Bravia 8 II offers 50% more brightness than the current WRGB OLED-based Bravia 8, and multiple sources suggest its 25-125% brighter than the A95L, depending on the reporting source. This increased luminance allows for more impactful HDR highlights and better performance in bright room environments.Photo: SonyThe TV incorporates an integrated temperature sensor with XR Contrast Booster 15 technology that controls brightness at the pixel level to enhance picture depth and detail. This precision control helps maintain the perfect black levels that OLED is known for while pushing brightness in specific areas of the screen. The Bravia 8 II features Sonys XR Triluminos Max technology, an evolution of their color processing that takes advantage of the QD-OLED panels natural color purity and wide gamut capabilities. Early demonstrations showed vivid saturated colors against a deep black background, creating a dimensional image quality.Sonys XR Processor powers all this visual performance, featuring AI-driven scene recognition technology. This system analyzes each scene to enhance realism by comparing content with a reference library of known backgrounds and patterns, helping to fill in details that might be missing from the source material. Additional picture enhancement features include XR Clear Image for clarity enhancement, XR OLED Motion for smoother movement, Live Color for color enhancement, and Dynamic Contrast Enhancer for improved contrast.Technical Specifications and FeaturesThe Bravia 8 II delivers a premium viewing experience with its 4K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, ensuring both crystal-clear static images and smooth motion handling. The display maintains excellent visibility from virtually any angle thanks to its wide 178-degree viewing field, making it ideal for larger rooms where viewers might be seated off-center. Content creators will appreciate the TVs comprehensive HDR format support, which includes HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision, ensuring compatibility with virtually all high dynamic range content available today.Photo: SonyThe anti-reflection coating helps maintain image quality even in brightly lit rooms, though early reports suggest Sony has taken a balanced approach that preserves image integrity while reducing the most distracting reflections. For viewers concerned with seeing content exactly as directors intended, the Filmmaker Mode disables post-processing effects that might alter the original creative vision. Beyond this purist option, the TV offers a rich selection of picture modes to suit different content types and viewing preferences, from the vibrant colors of Vivid mode to the specialized settings of the gaming-focused FPS and RTS modes.Connection options cover all modern needs with four HDMI 2.1 ports that support the latest high-bandwidth gaming and video standards. Two USB ports allow for media playback or recording functions, while traditional connectivity is maintained through an Ethernet port for a stable internet connection and an RF input for antenna or cable connections. Audio output options include the optical digital audio output for connecting to legacy sound systems. The implementation of HDCP 2.3 across all HDMI ports ensures compatibility with protected content sources, while HDMI CEC functionality through Bravia Sync allows for simplified control of multiple compatible devices with a single remote. The eARC/ARC support streamlines audio setup, enabling high-quality audio transmission to compatible sound systems with minimal cabling.Sony continues to differentiate its TVs through innovative audio approaches with the Bravia 8 II featuring Acoustic Surface Audio+ technology, which uses actuators to transform the entire TV screen into a speaker. This creates a more immersive experience where sound appears to emanate directly from the on-screen action. The speaker system consists of a 2.1.2 channel configuration with four speakers plus one subwoofer, delivering a combined 40W of audio power. Format support is extensive, covering Dolby Audio, Dolby Atmos, DTS Digital Surround, DTS Express, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, and DTS. The TV also supports Sonys Acoustic Center Sync feature, which allows integration with compatible Sony soundbars or speaker systems to enhance dialog clarity and improve the localization of on-screen sound, working with the BRAVIA Theater Bar 8, BRAVIA Theater Bar 9, and BRAVIA Theater Quad systems. The Bravia 8 II runs on Google TV as its operating system, providing access to a vast range of streaming services and apps through the Google Play Store. The TV includes 32GB of storage for app installation and supports popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube, and Apple TV. Built-in Chromecast for casting from mobile devices, Apple AirPlay support, and screen mirroring capabilities ensure flexible content sharing options. Voice assistant functionality, Netflix, and Sony Pictures Core Calibrated mode, Bravia Cam support, and Google Home integration round out the smart features. A new addition is Sonys Studio Calibrated movie mode, designed to present content exactly as creators intended. For gamers, the Bravia 8 II offers several features aimed at enhancing the interactive experience. Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support on HDMI ports 3 and 4 prevents screen tearing during gameplay, while Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) across all four HDMI ports automatically switches to low-lag mode when a game source is detected. High Frame Rate (HFR) support enables 4K content at 120Hz for ultra-smooth motion. HGiG (HDR Gaming Interest Group) compatibility improves HDR gaming performance, while Game Optimizer settings allow for tailoring the experience to different game types. Dedicated FPS Game and RTS Game picture modes complete the gaming package. These features collectively work to reduce input lag, eliminate visual artifacts, and optimize picture quality specifically for gaming content.Market Positioning and AvailabilityThe Sony Bravia 8 II is positioned as a premium OLED TV that succeeds the A95L in Sonys lineup, though at a potentially more accessible price point. Sony has stated that it will be more affordable than the A95L, though specific pricing has not yet been announced. The TV is expected to begin shipping later this Spring (2025), with exact availability dates to be confirmed. When it launches, the Bravia 8 II will compete in the high-end TV market against other premium OLED and Mini LED models from competitors like LG, Samsung, and Panasonic.Photo: SonySony appears to be maintaining a dual approach to premium TVs, with the Bravia 9 Mini LED at the absolute top of the lineup and the Bravia 8 II as the flagship OLED option. This strategy gives consumers a choice based on their viewing preferences and environment. Early hands-on impressions from reviewers have been positive, with What Hi-Fi describing it as a meaningful upgrade on one of the best TVs ever made. The decision to stick with QD-OLED technology rather than switching to LGs newer quad stack OLED panels suggests Sony remains confident in the performance capabilities of the Samsung Display panels, particularly when paired with Sonys proprietary processing technologies. Some potential drawbacks noted in early impressions include the continued limitation of just two HDMI 2.1 sockets (though the specifications suggest all four HDMI ports support HDMI 2.1 features). Additionally, the absence of a 77-inch model at launch means consumers seeking larger screen sizes will need to either wait or consider the older A95L in that size. The post Sony Bravia 8 II: Sonys New Flagship OLED TV for 2025 first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Self-chilling Beverage Can Promotes Sustainability in a Different Way
    www.yankodesign.com
Theres something undeniably satisfying about cracking open an ice-cold beverage can and hearing that distinctive fizz. The refreshing sensation of that first sip is a simple pleasure that many of us take for granted, at least until were stuck with a lukewarm drink. Traditional coolers only maintain temperature for a few hours, and portable refrigerators are expensive, bulky options that most people wouldnt consider practical for everyday use.Enter the innovative self-chilling beverage can from Delta H Innovations, a groundbreaking solution thats changing how we enjoy our favorite drinks on the go. With just the press of a button, this remarkable container transforms a room-temperature beverage into a perfectly chilled drink in approximately two minutes; no ice, no refrigerator, and no planning ahead required. Its a game-changer for outdoor enthusiasts, commuters, and anyone whos ever wished for a cold drink in an inconvenient location.Designer: Delta H InnovationsThe science behind this clever invention is surprisingly straightforward yet incredibly effective. When you push the button located at the bottom of the can, water stored in the aluminum base mixes with special salt components embedded within the cans walls. This triggers an endothermic reaction, a process that absorbs heat from the surrounding liquid, rapidly cooling your beverage to the ideal temperature without any artificial refrigerants or electricity.Youll know the magic is happening when frost appears on the exterior of the can: a visible sign of the cooling process at work. The can even features a clever indicator system: a white snowflake logo that turns blue once the beverage reaches the optimal chilled temperature. This visual cue eliminates any guesswork about when your drink is ready to enjoy, making the experience both convenient and satisfying for users who appreciate thoughtful design details. The cooling effect isnt just a momentary gimmick either. Once activated, the can maintains its chilled temperature for up to 45 minutes, giving you plenty of time to enjoy your beverage at your own pace. When youre finished, disposal is as simple as with any standard aluminum can no special recycling procedures required. This seamless integration into existing habits makes adoption painless for environmentally conscious consumers. The can itself is 100% recyclable, but what truly sets this innovation apart is its unique approach to sustainability. While many eco-friendly products focus on materials or manufacturing processes, the self-chilling can addresses energy consumption in a completely different way. By eliminating the need for refrigeration, it reduces electricity usage across the beverage supply chain. Consider how much energy is consumed keeping drinks cold in stores, restaurants, and homes, this technology could potentially reduce that footprint significantly if widely adopted. The post Self-chilling Beverage Can Promotes Sustainability in a Different Way first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • DIY Interactive Smart Coffee Table Uses Second-hand Products and Reclaimed Materials
    www.yankodesign.com
Remember those sci-fi movies where characters interact with touch-enabled surfaces everywhere? While were not quite living in that futuristic world yet, the concept of interactive tables has started to materialize in high-end offices and luxury gaming setups. The catch? These fancy pieces of tech typically come with eye-watering price tags of $4,000 or more, putting them well beyond the reach of most home tinkerers and tech enthusiasts whod love to have this technology in their living rooms. But what if you could build your own interactive smart coffee table for a fraction of that cost? With some creative repurposing of second-hand electronics, reclaimed materials, and a bit of maker spirit, you can create a fully functional touch-enabled table for around $400. This DIY approach not only saves money but also gives old tech a new life while allowing you to customize every aspect of your creation to fit your specific needs and aesthetic preferences.Designer: Steve GibbsThe heart of this project lies in repurposing a second-hand 40-inch smart TV as the interactive display surface. Rather than buying a brand-new touchscreen (which would immediately blow your budget), this approach leverages technology you might already have gathering dust in your garage or can find at bargain prices online. The TV provides the visual component, while an old laptop serves as the brains of the operation, handling all the computing tasks and software needs without requiring you to invest in expensive new hardware. A touchscreen overlay on top of the TV, the only brand-new part in this build, provides the interactive element.Finding the right materials for the tables structure doesnt have to break the bank either. Reclaimed wood offers character and sustainability while keeping costs down. Many builders have successfully used pallet wood, old furniture pieces, or even lumber salvaged from renovation projects. This approach not only saves money but also gives your creation a unique, personalized look that mass-produced furniture simply cant match, all while keeping perfectly good materials out of landfills. What makes this DIY table particularly clever is the tilting mechanism that transforms it from a coffee table into a workstation. By designing a hinge system into the structure, you can angle the screen forward for more comfortable typing and interaction when you want to use it for productivity. Since the system runs both Windows 11 and Android, you essentially get a massive tablet and computer in one piece of furniture, though the height might not be ergonomically perfect for extended work sessions. Theres also a sliding tray to hold your work tools or as storage thats typically found on coffee tables. The build process requires some basic woodworking skills for constructing the frame and housing, along with a bit of electronics know-how for connecting the components. Youll need to carefully plan the internal layout to ensure proper ventilation for the electronics while maintaining the clean, finished look of a regular coffee table. Cable management becomes particularly important, as nobody wants to see a tangle of wires spoiling the sleek appearance of their custom furniture piece. The beauty of this DIY approach lies in its flexibility and customization potential. Want to add ambient lighting that reacts to whats on screen? Go for it. Need extra USB ports for charging devices? Easy to incorporate. Interested in adding voice control through a smart assistant? Thats doable too. Unlike commercial products with fixed features, your homemade smart table can evolve with your needs and incorporate new technologies as they become available, making it a long-term investment rather than a soon-to-be-obsolete gadget. The post DIY Interactive Smart Coffee Table Uses Second-hand Products and Reclaimed Materials first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • SUP Game Box 400 in 1 reinterpreted with ergonomic grips for gamers who demand precise control
    www.yankodesign.com
The SUP Game Box 400 in 1, a retro-inspired handheld console, has garnered attention for its unique approach to reviving nostalgic gaming experiences. While the original design appeals to retro gaming enthusiasts, a reinterpretation of this gadget offers an opportunity to rethink its aesthetic, functionality, and user experience for a more modern audience. The conceptual redesign of the SUP Game Box aims to bridge the gap between nostalgic gameplay and the expectations of contemporary gamers. The original devices bulky plastic casing is reimagined with sleek, ergonomic contours that not only provide a comfortable grip but also introduce a refined, modern look. Soft-touch materials replace the hard plastic, giving the device a more premium feel while improving durability. The buttons, often criticized for their lack of responsiveness, are re-engineered to provide tactile feedback, enhancing the gaming experience and addressing one of the key complaints from users of the original design.Designer: Sara OuraniThe screen, a crucial element of any handheld gaming console, is also rethought. The previous iterations used smaller, lower-quality screens, which, while functional, could detract from the overall enjoyment. The redesign introduces a larger, high-definition display with improved brightness and color accuracy. This upgrade ensures that games, especially the vibrant and fast-paced ones, can be enjoyed without straining the eyes or losing visual clarity. Additionally, the inclusion of a customizable interface allows users to tailor the experience to their preferences, from selecting game categories to adjusting screen settings for different lighting environments.A significant departure from the original is the integration of modern connectivity options. The new concept introduces wireless multiplayer features, allowing users to play with others seamlessly, whether locally or online. This eliminates the need for physical cables or bulky adapters, bringing the SUP Game Box into the 21st century with a more accessible and dynamic social experience. Furthermore, the device incorporates a cloud-saving system, ensuring that players can pick up right where they left off across different devices or share their progress with friends. In terms of game selection, the redesign maintains the nostalgic appeal of the original while expanding its scope. In addition to the 400 pre-installed titles, the redesigned version allows for digital downloads, granting access to a wider library of retro games. As for the ergonomics, the handheld gets a wide winged section to hold on to firmly. This lets you have more control over the movement and control of the buttons on either side of the controller. Although it mars the portability associated with compact handhelds, the lure of much better grip and control will entice serious gamers.Ultimately, this reinterpretation of the SUP Game Box 400 in 1 marries retro charm with modern sensibilities. It offers a fresh take on the portable gaming experience, combining nostalgic elements with contemporary functionality. By blending timeless gameplay with thoughtful design, the new concept promises to appeal to both long-time fans and a new generation of gamers looking for a retro yet forward-thinking gaming device. The post SUP Game Box 400 in 1 reinterpreted with ergonomic grips for gamers who demand precise control first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Moving Furniture visualizes chairs and tables in time and space
    www.yankodesign.com
Some pieces of furniture are meant to be used as they were originally created for. Others are meant to be admired design-wise although theyre not always as functional. Some are meant to mimic furniture but are actually designed as sculptures or art installations. Then there are those pieces that seem to be all of the above. This series of conceptual furniture falls into that category.Designer: Michael JantzenThe Moving Furniture series takes that fleeting thought of the ghosts of chairs and tables as they move through time and space and solidifies it into tangible, thought-provoking art. This collection of conceptual furniture, designed for both indoor and outdoor spaces, isnt just about a place to sit or set down a drink; its a visual exploration of how objects occupy and traverse the realms of space and time. Its like youre imagining them as stop motion animation but theyre actual pieces of furniture that you can use once you stop admiring them. The pieces are crafted from painted wood for the interiors and then robust painted steel for the exteriors. They begin with the simple and archetypal forms of chairs and tables but are then reimagined in traces of movement either through linear streaks, fragmented shapes, or echoes of their original form. The result is a dynamic composition, a frozen moment that hints at a past trajectory and perhaps even a future one. You might encounter a chair with an ethereal extension suggesting its in the process of being pulled away, or a table with layered segments that imply a shift in position over time. While the primary goal is artistic expression, some pieces remain usable in the traditional sense. Imagine sitting on a chair that visually embodies the act of sitting, or placing your coffee cup on a table that seems to be in a perpetual state of gentle drift. This blend of the practical and the conceptual adds another layer of intrigue to the series. The aesthetic intention behind Moving Furniture is clear: to forge a novel sculptural art form. By crystallizing the ephemeral traces of movement, the artist creates objects that are both familiar and utterly unexpected. These arent just pieces of furniture; they are visual narratives, prompting viewers to consider the unseen forces and histories that shape our physical world. They invite us to see the everyday with fresh eyes, to perceive the inherent dynamism in even the most static of objects. In a world often obsessed with stillness, Moving Furniture offers a vibrant and insightful perspective on the beauty of implied motion. The post Moving Furniture visualizes chairs and tables in time and space first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • dbrands Grass-Textured Skins Let You Literally Touch Grass Without Going Outside
    www.yankodesign.com
We check our phones thousands of times daily, running our fingers across smooth glass and metal surfaces that have become extensions of ourselves. This constant tactile relationship with our devices makes the texture we feel just as important as the visual design. While most manufacturers focus on sleek, minimalist aesthetics, dbrand has taken a wildly different approach with their latest product release thats equal parts bizarre and brilliant. In what might be the most literal interpretation of the internet meme touch grass, dbrand has unveiled a new line of device skins that bring actual (fake) grass textures to your favorite gadgets. The aptly named Touch Grass skins transform the back of your smartphone, laptop, or gaming console into a miniature lawn that you can carry everywhere. Its a tactile experience thats simultaneously ridiculous and oddly satisfying.Designer: dbrandMost smartphone accessories prioritize visual appeal over tactile sensation, treating texture as an afterthought rather than a central feature. dbrands grass skins flip this concept upside down by making the physical feeling the main attraction. According to the company, each square centimeter contains over 1,000 individual strands of synthetic grass that create a surprisingly realistic sensation against your fingertips. The resulting texture provides both novelty and a unique grip that standard cases simply cant match. The concept of grass-covered technology might seem strange to many, especially those who associate lawns with weekend chores and allergies. Yet theres something undeniably appealing about bringing a touch of nature to our digital lives. The contrast between natural textures and high-tech devices creates an interesting juxtaposition that makes these skins stand out from the sea of boring cases and covers that dominate the accessory market. Its weird, but in the most intriguing way possible. What makes this product launch particularly amusing is dbrands decision to release it on April 1st, traditionally reserved for fake product announcements and corporate pranks. Unlike most April Fools Day jokes that disappear after generating some social media buzz, these grass skins are actually real products you can purchase right now. The company has a history of turning seemingly ridiculous concepts into legitimate products, and Touch Grass continues this tradition of blending humor with genuine innovation. The practical benefits of these grassy textures extend beyond mere novelty. The raised surface provides additional grip for devices that might otherwise slip from your hands. The unique texture also makes your gadget instantly recognizable by touch alone, eliminating those moments of fumbling through identical black rectangles. Of course, these practical advantages come with potential downsides, including the possibility of the fake grass collecting dust or triggering allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.Despite the potential drawbacks, dbrands Touch Grass skins represent a refreshing departure from conventional accessory design. In a market saturated with products that look virtually identical, these textured coverings offer something genuinely different. The sensation of running your fingers across the miniature lawn might be exactly what your tech-weary brain needs after hours of staring at screens. Its a small reminder of the natural world, cleverly integrated into the devices that often disconnect us from it.The post dbrands Grass-Textured Skins Let You Literally Touch Grass Without Going Outside first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • This LEGO Monsters, Inc. Build Unlocks Serious 2000s Pixar Movie Nostalgia
    www.yankodesign.com
2001 was a phenomenal year for movies. Shrek, Harry Potter (the first one), Fast and the Furious, Monsters Inc., Rush Hour 2, Oceans Eleven, Bridget Jones Diary. Imagine all these cult classics in the span of one year. Its inconceivable to have so many great films release in the same year in todays day and age. Take Monsters, Inc. for starters just the premise itself monsters appearing in kids bedrooms to make them scream because their entire world runs on the energy emitted by a childs screams. Its pure art a child screams, it fills up a battery, and thats used to power the monster world.Well probably never get films as great as that again, but nostalgia is a powerful tool, and so is the LEGO brick. Recreating perhaps one of the most iconic elements of Monsters, Inc. is Pester78s rendition of Boos door. The way it worked in the movie was that doors were portals to the human world. The Monsters, Incorporated company had a replica of every single door to every childs bedroom on the planet. Doors docked into a rig, portals got activated, monsters went about scaring children, while the screams of kids charged a battery cell attached to the rig. Pester78s LEGO recreation rebuilds this rig with immaculate detail, capturing the most pivotal and memorable moment of the entire movie!Designer: Pester78The entire rig is designed to move with stunning accuracy, replicating the movie frame for frame. Boos door docks into the rig, which gets secured by two mechanical jaws on either side. Unlike most LEGO builds which are purely static, this one is as animated as they come, with moving parts that almost feel like youre watching the movie. The colors, patterns, proportions are perfect, and those flowers on Boos door are *chefs kiss*.The door locking mechanism works like it should. It clamps, it moves, it feels like it belongs in the actual factory. The scream canister isnt decorativeits part of the system. Control panels, mechanical arms, exposed cabling, and that deliciously chaotic Pixar industrial design all show up without apology. You can practically hear the dull hum of the factory floor and the screech of a door being slotted into place, with Rozs droning voice in the background being an absolute caricature of the bureaucracy-loving secretary who wouldnt resist complaining about you not following protocol. Its funny how something as simple as a door can evoke the level of nostalgia as this build does. It has no characters, no Sulley, no Mike, no Randall, not even tiny Boo, Yet it commands such strong memories. Im probably going to rewatch Monsters, Inc. just after this! And I guess thats a victory for this MOC (My Own Creation).Theres no official part count yet, but eyeballing it, youre looking at 800 to maybe 1000 pieces. Not massive, but enough to make you work for it. Enough to make you sit down, dump the bags out, and hear Randy Newmans score creeping into your head whether you like it or not. The build is aimed squarely at people who carePixar nerds, LEGO nerds, anyone who remembers Boo calling Sulley Kitty like it was yesterday.Pester78s creation is currently a submission on the LEGO Ideas forum, where independent LEGO builders share their creative work, while the broader LEGO community votes for their favorite designs. With over 3,000 votes and 589 days till the voting ends, this particular kit is surely on its way to hitting the 10,000 vote mark, following which itll get sent to LEGOs internal team for review and hopefully turned into a box set perhaps with movie characters to complete the scene! You can vote for the Monsters, Inc. Boos Door Scream Floor build on the LEGO Ideas website here. The post This LEGO Monsters, Inc. • Looking for a NAS in 2025? We Found the Perfect One, and its Portable!
    www.yankodesign.com
A NAS should be on everyones tech shopping list in 2025. With cloud storage services hiking up subscription fees and quietly using personal data for AI training and targeted ads, its becoming painfully clear that owning your own storage isnt just a luxuryits a necessity. The days of blindly trusting big tech with your files are over. A NAS puts control back in your hands, ensuring your photos, videos, and important documents stay private and accessible on your terms. But while traditional NAS systems offer security and reliability, theyre bulky, stationary, and feel more like home-office furniture than a modern storage solution. Thats where the StationPC PocketCloud changes everything.Unlike the usual NAS setups that sit on a desk, packed with multiple drive bays and a tangle of cables, the PocketCloud is built for movement. Its a portable, modular NAS that gives you the best of both worlds: the flexibility of external SSDs with the redundancy and smart management of a proper NAS. Its two-part design keeps your data safe while allowing you to take a portion of it anywhere, making it the perfect blend of convenience and security.Designer: HOZO DesignClick Here to Buy Now: $199 $299 ($100 off). Hurry, only 273/300 left! Raised over $55,000.The PocketClouds signature innovation is its split-storage system. Instead of housing everything in a single bulky enclosure, it divides your storage into a compact, travel-friendly SSD unit and a base station that handles backups. The portable unit measures just 6 inches by 3.6 inches, weighs 363.5g (without SSDs), and fits easily in a pocket or bag. Meanwhile, the dock acts as a hub, keeping your data protected and allowing seamless synchronization. This means you can carry essential files with you while the rest remain securely stored at home, ready to sync when you reconnect. The PocketCloud supports M.2 NVMe 2280 SSDs with exFAT formatting, delivering speeds that make slow external drives look prehistoric. USB drive mode pushes read speeds of 1067MB/s and write speeds of 1050MB/s, but when accessing the SSD directly, performance jumps to 1625MB/s read and 1616MB/s write. Thats the kind of speed that makes a differencetransferring 10GB files in seconds, backing up a days worth of RAW photos in minutes, and loading media instantly without buffering.Theres a myth that only offices and photographers or creative studios with intranet file-sharing systems use Network Attached Storage solutions. Im here to bust that myth. Think of the NAS as a cloud drive, but rather than sitting in a server farm somewhere in some foreign country, it sits in your living room. You dont pay subscription fees to use the storage, and you certainly dont worry about getting hacked or spied on by larger corporations, nation-states, or LLMs looking to train on your data. Now heres the fun bit instead of using that drive space just to store backups of your phone or laptop, you can use it to run your own streaming service. No more shelling out extra bucks for Netflix, only to realize that The Office left the platform a month ago and now you have to pay Disney or Amazon money. Instead, just store media files on the PocketCloud, and you can literally stream movies on any device. Running on StationOS with the StationCloud app, it integrates seamlessly with popular streaming apps like Plex, allowing you to watch your own media library on demand. Movies, TV shows, music, or personal video collectionsall accessible without needing an internet connection or dealing with third-party platforms and their geographically limited libraries. For photo backups from your phone, PocketClouds dedicated app aims to provide the same gallery UI youd expect from Google or Apple. PocketClouds photos gallery lets you browse photos intuitively, while a locally-run AI groups similar photos by face, scene, or event, creating intuitive albums the way other gallery apps would. And yes, you can share galleries with family members (or friends) on the same NAS like you would on iCloud or Googles own Photos service.Under its hood, the PocketCloud runs on a quad-core Cortex-A55 processor (RK3568B2), paired with a Mali-G52 GPU and 2GB of LPDDR4 RAM. This might not sound like much compared to a desktop NAS, but for a portable device, its more than enough. It ensures smooth performance when managing files, syncing backups, and streaming media. Connectivity is equally impressive, featuring USB-A and USB-C ports (both at 10Gbps), an SD card slot, Bluetooth 5.2, and Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). Whether youre transferring files between devices or streaming content over a local network, the PocketCloud keeps up without breaking a sweat. The key difference between the PocketCloud and your standard NAS, however, is the inclusion of a battery, which bolsters portability. With a 23.04Wh battery, it offers around 6 hours of active use or up to 20 days on standby. Thats more than enough for an entire work session, a long-haul flight, or a weekend trip without constantly reaching for a charger. When it does need a power boost, the USB-C PD charging (12V/2.5A) brings it back to full in just 2.5 hours.Portability instantly means durability needs to be addressed too something PocketCloud does with its robust build quality. Constructed from ABS plastic, PC plastic, and aluminum alloy, it balances lightweight design with rugged reliability. Its built to survive life on the gowhether youre a photographer on a remote shoot, a digital nomad working from cafs, or just someone who prefers to keep their data close instead of locked away in some corporate data center.Despite its emphasis on offline storage, the PocketCloud doesnt ignore the benefits of cloud connectivity. It offers optional cloud integration, letting you choose which files get backed up online while keeping sensitive data private. This hybrid approach gives you the best of both worlds: local security with the flexibility of remote access when needed. So who is the PocketCloud for? Its a dream device for content creators handling massive media files, privacy-conscious users who dont trust big tech with their data, frequent travelers who need reliable storage on the go, and anyone tired of being locked into expensive cloud subscriptions. Its for photographers who need to back up thousands of images in minutes, for video editors who need high-speed storage that fits in a backpack, and for media enthusiasts who want a personal, always-available streaming service without the hassle of internet dependencies.Ive spent months researching NAS options, weighing Synology, TerraMaster, and WD against each other, trying to decide between raw performance, software features, and price. The problem with most NAS units? Theyre fantastic for home use but completely impractical once you step outside. The PocketCloud changes that equation. At $199 for the portable unit (or $298 with the dock), its not just a good NASits the first one that truly fits a modern, mobile lifestyle.Click Here to Buy Now: $199 $299 ($100 off). • Pan Records x Nike Air Max 180: When Underground Music Meets Minimalist Design
    www.yankodesign.com
Experimental music and athletic footwear dont often find common ground in product design. The Pan Records x Nike Air Max 180 collaboration, however, presents an interesting exception. Released in 2025, this all-black, Swoosh-less design offers a thoughtful interpretation of the classic silhouette. Having covered consumer technology and design for a long while now, I find this partnership noteworthy for its understated approach and cultural connections.Designer: Pan Records x NikeNike partnering with a Berlin-based experimental music label? That wasnt on anyones 2025 bingo card. But the sportswear giants decision to collaborate with Pan Records makes perfect sense when you examine the cultural lineage of the Air Max 180. Since the 1990s, this silhouette has maintained a significant presence in electronic music scenes worldwide. DJs, producers, and club-goers embraced its distinctive aesthetic and cushioning technology during marathon sets and all-night dance sessions. The models connection to music culture runs deep deeper than most casual observers realize.Pan Records, founded in 2008 by Bill Kouligas, has spent 17 years cultivating a reputation for boundary-pushing experimental sound and visual art. The label exists in that rarefied if you know, you know space, launching careers of innovative artists like Yves Tumour and Eartheater while expanding beyond music into events and art installations. This collaboration follows Nikes earlier 2025 partnership with Londons Apron Records on the same silhouette. A pattern emerges. Nike seems intent on revitalizing the Air Max 180 through collaborations with influential yet niche music labels that share its forward-thinking ethos. What makes this partnership particularly fascinating is the creative freedom Nike granted. Removing the iconic Swoosh from a Nike sneaker is practically unheard of. Yet here, that bold choice allows the textural elements and minimalist aesthetic to take center stage. The Pan Records x Nike Air Max 180 represents minimalism at its most impactful. Its all-black colorway might seem simple at first glance, but closer inspection reveals a sophisticated interplay of textures, materials, and symbolic elements. Most striking is whats missing the iconic Swoosh logo has vanished from the shoes sides. This absence creates a stealthy, stripped-down profile that forces you to appreciate the silhouettes inherent design language. Small Swoosh logos remain near the toe and on one side, but theyre subtle afterthoughts rather than focal points. The upper features a textured fabric that replaces the Air Max 180s traditional layered composition. This material choice gives the sneaker a hypnotic quality that shifts as light plays across its surface. A matte, crinkled synthetic overlay with a translucent sheen wraps the mudguard, creating a split-toned appearance despite the monochromatic palette. Nike and Pan Records employed a fused TPU film throughout the construction, creating what some have described as a shrink-wrapped aesthetic. This technique enhances durability while contributing to the futuristic vibe. The midsole, lining, and visible Air unit are completely blacked out, reinforcing the shoes stealthy appeal.Turn the shoe over, and youll discover perhaps its most captivating detail. The semi-translucent outsole reveals an image of Pan the Greek mythological deity associated with music and wild nature playing the flute. This same artwork appears on the inner tissue of the packaging, creating a cohesive thematic thread throughout the product experience. The heel features an irregularly 3D-printed clip designed to evoke ancient exhumed stone tools. Its an unexpected reference that adds both textural interest and conceptual depth. What makes this collaboration special beyond its physical form is its cultural positioning. The black-coated finish intentionally mimics the patina created by wearing sneakers night after night in clubs a direct nod to the Air Max 180s heritage in electronic music scenes and Pan Records roots in experimental club culture. This worn-in aesthetic serves as a visual metaphor for experience and authenticity. Rather than pristine, box-fresh sneakers, these shoes celebrate the lived-in quality that comes from genuine cultural participation. The name NIX appears prominently in the collaborations branding a reference to Kouligass creative research studio. Translating to nothing in German, it stands as a conceptual opposite to PAN, which means everything in Greek. This duality of everything/nothing informs the design philosophy and creates additional layers of meaning for those willing to dig deeper.By allowing Pan Records to create a Swoosh-less design, Nike demonstrates remarkable confidence in both its brand identity and the strength of the Air Max 180 silhouette. Few major sportswear companies would permit such radical reinterpretation of their most recognizable brand element. The minimalist approach also provides a refreshing counterpoint to contemporary sneaker trends that often rely on bold colors and obvious branding. In an era of maximalist design, this collaboration finds power in restraint.Set to release on April 12, 2025, the Pan Records x Nike Air Max 180 Black/Anthracite (style code FZ3310-001) will retail for $150 USD. Availability will include Nikes SNKRS platform, select Nike Sportswear retailers, and Nike.com. Given the niche appeal of Pan Records and the unique design approach, this collaboration will likely attract diverse audiences: sneaker enthusiasts, experimental music fans, and collectors who appreciate minimalist design aesthetics. Whether this will be a limited release remains unclear, though some industry observers suggest it might follow previous music label collaborations with region-restricted availability. If youre particularly drawn to this design, planning ahead might be wise. The Pan Records x Nike Air Max 180 demonstrates how reduction can create distinction in product design. By stripping away the expected and focusing on texture, material, and subtle storytelling, this collaboration achieves something rare in contemporary sneaker culture a genuinely fresh perspective on a classic silhouette. What makes this partnership particularly noteworthy is how it honors both brands identities while creating something entirely new. The experimental spirit of Pan Records merges seamlessly with Nikes design heritage, resulting in a product that feels authentic to both worlds.Nikes willingness to partner with niche cultural entities and grant them significant creative freedom suggests a sophisticated understanding of how modern brand building works. Rather than chasing mainstream collaborations exclusively, this approach builds credibility among tastemakers and cultural pioneers. For sneaker enthusiasts tired of predictable collaborations, the Pan Records x Nike Air Max 180 offers a glimpse of whats possible when brands take genuine creative risks. Its a reminder that sometimes the most impactful design statement is what you choose to remove rather than what you add. This unexpected partnership between a sportswear giant and an experimental music label has produced something genuinely distinctive in todays saturated sneaker market. And isnt that exactly what great collaborations should do?The post Pan Records x Nike Air Max 180: When Underground Music Meets Minimalist Design first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • The End of Battery Anxiety? How Power Banks Are Changing the Portable Charging Game
    www.yankodesign.com
Technologys relentless evolution transforms how we live, blurring the line between novelty and necessity. I discovered this during a cross-country flight when my laptop died mid-presentation, leaving me frantically searching for an outlet. Power banks epitomize this shift, emerging as elegant solutions to digital disconnection anxiety. These portable energy sanctuaries preserve our digital lifelines when battery icons flash red warnings. For design-conscious users like myself, todays power banks are no longer a blocky design but rather marry utility and aesthetics as sleek objects that slide into pockets alongside our cherished devices, providing the psychological comfort of knowing well never be stranded with a dead device. The liberation offered by portable power reshapes our relationship with technology and space. Ive appreciated this freedom during weekend hikes capturing sunset photos without battery anxiety, and at design conferences documenting inspirations among more scenarios. While wall chargers anchor us to architectural grids, power banks celebrate nomadic freedom. As devices become extensions of ourselves, these portable power sources have evolved into design objects worthy of display, silent guardians that speak volumes about our appreciation for both form and function. How Have Power Banks Evolved? As technology advances, power banks have undergone significant transformation. The power banks were once bulky and heavy devices that have now become sleek and lightweight units that store electrical energy to power electronic devices. Some of the recent improvements in lithium-ion battery technology have increased energy density allowing more power to be stored in a smaller space. These advancements not only make power banks more compact but also improve safety and enable faster charging speeds. Additionally, integrated circuits (ICs) and miniaturized chips now offer better protection against overheating and overcharging of the power bank.AYANEOs Retro Power Bank is a playful nod to the Super Famicom, designed to resemble the iconic Japanese console with a modern twist. The device is no larger than a smartphone and serves as a 12,000mAh power bank that is cleverly disguised in retro aesthetics. While many retro-themed devices aim to recreate old gaming experiences, this one focuses on visual appeal, featuring the dual-tone gray color scheme, raised middle section, and even a sliding power switch, similar to the original Super Famicom. The 45W output is fine for most phones, but its slower than higher-output chargers, and using both USB-C ports simultaneously reduces the output to 15W each. Theres no wireless charging, which preserves the devices retro look. The Retro Power Bank stands out for its unique design, offering a nostalgic tribute to classic gaming consoles in a modern, functional form. Its a fun, albeit slower, charging solution for those who appreciate retro-tech and practicality. What Are the Latest Features in Power Banks? The latest power banks come with a variety of innovative features. These include wireless charging, which allows one to charge devices without the need for a cable, and fast charging that provides quicker power-ups. Many power banks can also charge multiple devices simultaneously. For safety, modern power banks include features to prevent overheating and overcharging and even LED screens to display the current charge level. When fully charged, the LED screen is illuminated. Additionally, advances in manufacturing have improved efficiency, with built-in sensors that offer protection against overcharging. Some power banks even incorporate solar panels for charging during daylight. Another innovation is the modular power bank, where the batteries can be detachable or stackable, allowing users to add or remove the batteries depending on their specific power needs.By focusing on usability, portability, and aesthetics, Analog reimagined the power bank by blending functionality with thoughtful design. Instead of the typical bulky, brick-shaped design, they created a sleek, elongated version that resembles a cosmetic case. For many, a power bank is as essential as a smartphone, and with its added functionality, the design includes a built-in mirror for extra convenience.Available in a range of pastel colors, these power banks may appeal to individuals who appreciate having a mirror on hand or those who prefer a more stylish accessory. The ergonomic design also benefits users who experience hand or muscle strain from holding their phones for extended periods. While power banks are typically valued for their function over form, Analogs design proves that they can be both practical and visually appealing, with added features that enhance the overall user experience. What Factors to Consider When Selecting a Power Bank? When choosing a power bank, several factors should be considered, including capacity, size, and charging capabilities. If youre often on the move, opt for a lightweight design. For example, the power bank should have a higher charging capacity if you want to charge a laptop.Built-in safety features, such as overcharging protection, are essential. It is important to pay attention to the quality of the cable, as a high-quality cable offers better conductivity. Its advisable to choose a cable that supports the maximum current and voltage required for your device. If you need to charge multiple devices, look for power banks with higher output power and multiple USB ports or multi-device charging features. The power bank should also have the correct ports for your device(s).Charging speed is another important factor and refers to both how quickly the power bank charges itself and how quickly it charges your devices. Consider the input and output speeds to ensure optimal performance. You can also choose between two types of batteries: lithium-ion (Li-ion), which is generally cheaper and offers higher capacity, or lithium-polymer (Li-Po), which is lighter, and more compact, but typically offers lower capacity.Price is also an important factorwhile more expensive power banks may offer better features and durability, its always worth comparing different options. Be sure to check the brand reputation and customer reviews to ensure quality. The MChaos 10,000mAh power bank meets the growing demand for creatively designed, portable charging solutions. This compact power bank features a bidirectional USB-C port, along with a retractable cord and removable carabiner, allowing users to easily attach it to backpacks or clothing for convenient, on-the-go charging. The retractable cord extends up to 28 inches and locks in place, eliminating tangled cables and simplifying charging with a pull, plug, and go experience.Designed with durability in mind, the cord has been tested for 5,000 retractions, while the power bank is made from fireproof materials for added safety, protecting against overheating and electrical issues. With a 20W max output, it can charge devices like an iPhone to 50% in just 30 minutes and supports simultaneous charging of two devices. User feedback influenced its design, leading to the addition of an extra USB-C port and a new version with a Lightning cable option.Traditional power banks that are designed as horizontal boxes can be space-inefficient when in use, especially in cramped areas. A new concept, the SJPB-400 Mobile Power Bank, rethinks this design by allowing the power bank to stand upright, saving valuable horizontal space. This flexible design lets you position the power bank vertically or horizontally, with the ports conveniently located on the side, making them easy to access in either orientation. However, the SJPB-400 does have limitations. Its wireless charger is located on the longer side so it cant be used when standing vertically unless it incorporates a technology like MagSafe to keep devices in place. Additionally, the AC outlet on the opposite side remains inaccessible in the vertical position. The handles on each side, while helpful for portability, reduce its overall compactness and the dual-orientation design offers a fresh, space-saving approach to power stations.Power banks have evolved from bulky necessities to sleek, multifunctional devices that complement our digital lifestyle. Todays options range from nostalgic gaming-inspired designs to ergonomic models with built-in mirrors and versatile positioning capabilities. When selecting a power bank, consider capacity, charging speed, portability and safety features based on your specific needs. As battery technology continues to advance, we can expect even more innovative features, improved efficiency and creative designs. Whether youre an audiophile needing constant power for your devices or a casual user seeking emergency backup, modern power banks offer practical solutions that balance functionality with personal style ensuring your devices stay powered wherever life takes you.The post The End of Battery Anxiety? www.yankodesign.com
TAG Heuer has made a comeback to Formula-1 as the official timekeeper of the pinnacle of motorsports. The acclaimed watchmaker wants to mark its presence felt not only on the 2025 F1 calendar but also outside the sport. To celebrate its return to the circuit, the Maison has introduced a chronograph at Watches and Wonders 2025, thats fit for Raceday. The exclusive creation dubbed the Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph F1 reintroduces the iconic Rattrapante complication that was the beating heart of the 1916 Mikrosplit stopwatch. The timepiece is highlighted by its cool white and red hot contrasting dial that makes a statement even from a distance. TAG Heuers latest piece ushers in the new era of the brands direction, and how it celebrates its most valued partnerships.Designer: TAG HeuerRefreshing Formula-1 InfluenceRacing inspired details of the chronograph are honed by the intricately crafted calibre that has hand-finished bevels, black mirror-polished screws, and TAG Heuers oscillating weight thats styled like a shield. F1 spirit is exhibited in the performance and design of the Split-Seconds Chronograph F1, as the adrenaline-inducing sport celebrates its 75th anniversary. The sleek white ceramic case doesnt have an inner metallic container, which in itself is a major feat of technical prowess. This is contrasted with the translucent red-tinted dial that exposes the movement partially. The brain of this watch, fit for the Scuderia Ferrari drivers Charles and Lewis, is the Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier-partnership automatic split-seconds chronograph TH81-00 movement beating at 5 Hz frequency. The chronograph squeezes out 55-65 hours of power reserve with ease. Thus, you can bank on the millisecond perfect complexity of measuring two separate time intervals simultaneously. • Charge Up Your Comfort With a Smiley Chair That Powers Your Day
    www.yankodesign.com
Imagine plopping down in your favorite chair after a long day, ready to scroll through social media or catch up on emails, when that dreaded low battery notification pops up. Suddenly, your relaxation turns into a frantic search for the nearest power outlet, often requiring you to abandon your cozy spot altogether. Weve all been there, that frustrating moment when comfort and connectivity collide, forcing us to choose between staying seated or staying powered up. This common dilemma highlights a disconnect in furniture design that has persisted despite our increasingly device-dependent lifestyles.Enter the Smiley Chair: a brilliant fusion of comfort and connectivity thats transforming how we interact with our furniture and devices. Created through a collaboration between renowned designer India Mahdavi and 22 System (a brand co-founded by Boccis Omer Arbel), this playful armchair tackles the power problem head-on by incorporating multiple electrical outlets directly into its design. But what makes this chair truly special isnt just its functionality but how it transforms something as utilitarian as power outlets into delightful design elements that enhance rather than detract from the chairs aesthetic appeal.Designer: India Mahdavi (Photos by Thierry Depagne,Tom Dagnas)The chairs most striking feature is its clever use of the iconic smiley face motif, perhaps the worlds most universally recognized symbol of happiness. By noticing the uncanny resemblance between power outlets and simplified facial features, Mahdavi has turned what could have been an eyesore into a charming design statement. These yellow circular outlets scattered across the chairs plush pink upholstery create an immediate visual impact, drawing smiles from anyone who spots the clever connection between form and function. Not all the faces on the chair serve the same purpose, adding another layer of playfulness to the design. Some feature standard power outlets that look like wide-eyed expressions, while others incorporate USB ports that give the appearance of squinting or winking faces. This variety not only accommodates different charging needs but also creates a collection of distinct personalities across the chairs surface, making what could have been a monotonous technical feature into something genuinely fun and engaging for users of all ages. The lush pink upholstery provides the perfect backdrop for these cheerful yellow accents, creating a warm and inviting piece that stands out in any space. The contrast between the soft, tactile fabric and the functional hard plastic of the outlets creates an interesting textural juxtaposition that adds depth to the design. Rather than trying to hide or minimize the presence of technology, the Smiley Chair celebrates it, transforming what many designers would consider a necessary evil into the star feature of the piece. From coffee shops to airport lounges, weve seen various attempts at integrating power solutions into seating, but most take a utilitarian approach that prioritizes function over form. These solutions often feel like afterthoughts, awkwardly placed outlets that disrupt the furnitures aesthetic or require users to contort themselves to access hidden power sources. The Smiley Chair flips this paradigm by making the outlets a central design element, proving that practical features can enhance rather than compromise a pieces visual appeal. The post Charge Up Your Comfort With a Smiley Chair That Powers Your Day first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Heinekens Smootheriser Face Cream Promises To Be As Smooth As Its Beer (Its not a joke)
    www.yankodesign.com
Beer, famously good for your hair, so why not for your face too? Well, Heinekens Smootheriser makes the case that beer for the belly is good enough for the hair, and can be great for the face too. Developed in-house and launching in Taiwan and Cambodia, the Smootheriser uses the same quality hops and barley as its alcoholic counterpart but instead of working your liver, it hydrates your skin. What first started as an April Fools Joke actually spun off into a full-fledged product development exercise. Im not kidding Heinekens own press release says This isnt an April Fools Joke. The Heineken Smootheriser will launch in Cambodia and Taiwan, coinciding with the beverage companys marketing of Heineken Silver its premium beer offering. I guess (facial) beauty really is in the eyes of the beer holder.Designer: HeinekenIts not entirely clear if the skin cream will be a limited-edition offering or something Heineken will develop continually for the near future but the cream is a way of drawing attention to Heineken Silver one of the companys most popular beers. Brewed at -1C for its signature crisp taste, Heineken Silver has a fairly large fan-base and if the company can also get the same people to keep their skin looking flawlessly moisturized, I guess thats a win for everyone. The launch in Asia hopes to tap into the massive skincare-enthusiast market in the region, providing a premium product made using the same high-quality ingredients as their beer.Heineken obviously gets the fact that announcing this on the first of April comes with its level of extra skepticism. I went through the press release multiple times too but I guess you have to take a company on its word when it does specify it in a press release. After all, sometimes jokes can have a pretty adverse impact on a companys valuation in the stock market remember Volkswagen teasing that they were rebranding to Voltswagen? The Smootheriser, arguably, feels much better-planned. Its sure to make people laugh, then become actually curious, and hopefully relent. Maybe Heineken should launch a beer-flavored Lip Gloss next?!The post Heinekens Smootheriser Face Cream Promises To Be As Smooth As Its Beer (Its not a joke) first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Blueprint to Bezel: How Rolexs Revolutionary Movement Shaped the Land-Dweller
    www.yankodesign.com
In product design, the relationship between internal architecture and external form often determines the success of the entire object. The new Rolex Land-Dweller represents a masterclass in this disciplinea timepiece where the revolutionary caliber 7135 movement serves as both functional core and conceptual blueprint for every design decision that follows.Designer: RolexEngineering Constraints as Design CatalystsMost watch designs begin with the case and dial, with movements selected or modified to fit within predetermined aesthetic parameters. The Land-Dweller inverts this relationship. Rolexs development of the Dynapulse escapement a silicon-based direct impulse system operating at 5 Hz established technical requirements that shaped the watchs entire physical presence.Oyster Perpetual Land-Dweller 36The movements architecture demanded specific spatial considerations. Operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour while maintaining a 66-hour power reserve, the caliber 7135 generates different energy patterns than conventional movements. This high-frequency operation influenced the case proportions, requiring precise internal volumes to optimize acoustic properties and minimize resonance issues that could affect timekeeping accuracy. The decision to showcase this technical achievement through a sapphire caseback unprecedented for a steel Rolex became the pivotal design choice. Once this transparency was established as a requirement, the entire case needed reconsideration. The result is a profile measuring either 36mm or 40mm in diameter with vertical case walls that maximize the viewing aperture while maintaining structural integrity.Material Selection Driven by Technical RequirementsThe movements components illustrate how material science dictated design possibilities. The silicon escapement components transmission wheel, distribution wheels, and impulse rocker possess inherent material properties that eliminate the need for lubrication. This self-lubricating quality influenced the movements layout, as components could be positioned based on optimal energy transfer rather than accessibility for servicing. The balance staff, crafted from proprietary high-technology ceramic, required development of specialized femtosecond laser manufacturing processes. This material choice wasnt merely technical its visual properties influenced the movements color palette and finishing techniques. The ceramics dark tone creates visual contrast against the optimized brass balance wheel, establishing focal points within the movements visual hierarchy. These material innovations extended to the case design. The modified waterproofness system around the crystal accommodates the technical satin finish on the upper portion of the middle case an engineering adaptation that became a defining aesthetic element. The case architecture features chamfered edges that receive high polish, creating light-catching facets that emphasize the geometric precision found in the movement components.Proportional Harmony Through Technological RequirementsThe caliber 7135s 32 patent applications (18 exclusive to this model) reflect its technical complexity, but this engineering density required careful consideration of proportions. The movements thickness slimmer than typical Rolex calibers despite its advanced functionality enabled the case to maintain a relatively thin profile. This dimensional constraint influenced the bezel design, which features wider, more pronounced fluting compared to other Rolex models. The oscillator system exemplifies this proportional thinking. The Syloxi hairsprings redesigned, thicker coils provide the necessary rigidity for the high-frequency operation. This technical requirement created a visual density at the movements heart that needed balancing through other components. The cut-out oscillating weight in yellow gold serves this purpose. Its open architecture creates visual breathing room, while its warm tone contrasts with the predominantly silver-toned components.Translating Technical Innovation to Surface DesignThe honeycomb dial pattern represents a direct visual translation of the movements technical innovations. Created using the same femtosecond laser technology employed in manufacturing movement components, this pattern establishes continuity between internal engineering and external aesthetics. The hexagonal cells create a geometric language that references silicons crystalline structure the very material enabling the Dynapulse escapements functionality. This pattern receives different treatments across the collection: crisp definition on the satin-finished white dials, more fluid appearance on the sunray-finished ice blue platinum version. These variations demonstrate how a single design motif can adapt to different contexts while maintaining conceptual integrity. The open-centered 6 and 9 numerals further this technical-aesthetic dialogue. Created using solid Chromalight blocks a ceramic-resin composite these numerals employ the same material science principles found in the movement components. Their negative space design creates visual porosity that references the movements efficient energy transfer system, where every component serves a specific purpose without excess material.Bracelet Design as Engineering ExtensionThe Flat Jubilee bracelet represents the final expression of the movement-first design approach. Its five-link structure maintains the classic Jubilee architecture but reimagines it with entirely flat surfaces that echo the movement bridges geometric precision. The center links sit slightly proud of the outer links, creating dimensional variation that references the calibers layered construction.Oyster Perpetual Land-Dweller 40The bracelets integration with the case achieves remarkable continuity through engineering innovation. Rolex developed a specialized attachment system that ensures structural integrity while maintaining visual flow. The ceramic inserts protecting the spring bars represent the same material science principles applied throughout the watch using advanced materials to solve specific technical problems while enhancing aesthetic coherence. The concealed Crownclasp completes this integration, maintaining the bracelets clean lines while providing secure closure. This mechanism embodies the same design philosophy found in the movement: complex engineering hidden beneath a refined exterior, with only essential elements visible.Color Strategy Informed by Technical RequirementsThe Land-Dwellers restrained color palette reflects the movements technical precision. The white Rolesor model pairs an intense white dial with silver-toned case elements and subtle white gold accents in the bezel. This monochromatic approach emphasizes form and texture over color variation, allowing the honeycomb patterns geometric precision to dominate the visual experience. The platinum models ice blue dial a color Rolex reserves exclusively for this precious metal creates a technical signature that identifies the material without requiring additional markers or text. This color strategy demonstrates how technical requirements (material identification) can generate distinctive aesthetic elements.Even the diamond-set versions maintain this technical-aesthetic alignment. The stones are arranged in orderly patterns that reinforce rather than distract from the watchs fundamental design language, with baguette-cut diamonds echoing the rectilinear geometry found throughout the design.Unified Design Language Through Technical NecessityWhat distinguishes the Land-Dwellers design approach is how technical requirements generated a unified visual language across all elements. The movements high-frequency operation necessitated the half-second graduated track on the angled flange. The silicon components self-lubricating properties influenced the cases smooth transitions between surfaces. The ceramic balance staffs manufacturing process informed the dial patterns creation. This approach represents industrial design at its most sophisticated, where engineering constraints become creative opportunities rather than limitations. Each technical requirement generated formal solutions that collectively created a cohesive aesthetic identity.Roger Federer wears a Land-Dweller 40 in a white Rolesor version. The Land-Dweller demonstrates how a movement-first design approach can yield distinctive results even within a brand with established visual codes. By allowing technical innovation to drive aesthetic decisions, Rolex has created a timepiece where form and function achieve perfect synthesis the ultimate goal of industrial design.Yuja Wang wears a Land-Dweller 36 in 18 ct Everose gold with a diamond-set bezel. The watchs geometric precision reflects the precision of the movement within, while its integrated design elements mirror the integrated nature of the calibers components. This coherence between technical requirements and formal expression represents design thinking at its most refined, where every element serves both functional and aesthetic purposes simultaneously, with nothing superfluous and nothing lacking. The post Blueprint to Bezel: How Rolexs Revolutionary Movement Shaped the Land-Dweller first appeared on Yanko Design.
