  • Interview with Professional 3D Artist Darrien Murphy
    www.thepixellab.net
One 3D artist I have been a huge fan of is Darrien Murphy. Hes an incredible designer.I recently saw a piece he did called Superheroes and Villains Trapped in the Egyptian Temple of Hathor and I really loved it. The vibe is sick, the camera moves are great, the music is spot on, and the whole thing is just really clean and well-made.I wanted to ask him about this video and his process so we can all learn a little about his workflow. Lets go! But before we do, lets watch the video, so we know what were discussing:Tell us about yourself! What do you do?My name is Darrien Murphy and Im a freelancer. Ive been in 3D/motion design for 20 years. My favorite and most used software is Maya in conjunction with Redshift.Tell me about this particular project. Was it for a client, or personal project? A bit of both. My friend started an online toy store called Lost City Toys and she hired me to create the brand and the website. I knew she would need a promo video and this project is the outcome. I have also been rebuilding my reel and felt like I needed one more project. What was the goal of this project? This is a promo to launch the website www.lostcitytoys.com & hopefully bring some eyes to it.What software/engine/plugins did you rely on for this project? I used Maya, Redshift, After Effects, and Davinci Resolve. No plugins. What was the most challenging part of pulling off such a great project? This project was the first time I really dove heavily into the new Redshift Standard Material with Subsurface Scattering. I knew the marble material would be in almost every shot so I spent a lot of time on it fine-tuning. For a long time, Ive had some sculptures in my mind that I wanted to emulate. The Bust of Octavian when he was a boy and the ivory miniatures from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna which I visited about 15 years ago. Here are some images that I used for inspiration:What was the timeline, how long did it take you to create?I took about 9 months including about 2.5 months of rendering. This was on top of my normal work schedule.Did you work with a team on this, or do it all yourself?I did work with purchased sculpts from some ZBrush modelers such as Vasiliy Poryagin, Zafar Hussain, and Dragun Studios. Other than that I did everything, hence the 9 months. What was the most fun part of it?The most fun part was the look development and lighting. My background is film directing so even though this is just 2 minutes I treated it like a film production.Do you use VDBs much?Yes, on two of my last three project I have used VDBs and I plan to in the future. The Pixel Lab VDBs are really great.I love using VDBs because they allow me to get directly into look development. For example, on this project, after I created the volume material for the fire I didnt even have to do a test render sequence because I already knew the sim was great. I also like the versatility and ease of use.(Learn more about VDBs in this article)Above fire asset is from VFX Elements Fire 3 PackDo you have any tips for using VDBsThe primary tip I would give for fire is finding the delicate balance between the gradient and other attributes in the material versus the (Redshift) Postfx Bloom. Getting the balance right will allow it to behave properly on screen meaning seeing detail in the flames when close and an overexposed flame from a distance with no adjustment.(Above render is Darrien using our Fire VDBs)Do you have any suggestions for people who want to join the industry now? Yes, if you use 3rd party assets, use high-quality assets. Pay attention to lens sizes in your 3D scene. Its as much a part of the creative process as anything else. Be ambitious in your projects, particularly while youre young and have extra time. Get in the habit of being outside your comfort zone. This will accelerate your learning pace.Ill also share a bit of my process. I chose music early (before my shot list). I edited the music, and then I made a video edit with just solid color backgrounds and text (see video below). I tailor my shots to the music, and then when I render I have an exact frame length with 10 extra frames of heads and tales.Where can we find your work and learn more about you?YouTube: www.youtube.com/@theimperiumstudioArt Station: www.artstation.com/darrienmurphyPixel Lab VDB 3D AssetsI hope you enjoyed this interview with Darrien! If you want to use the same assets that he uses in his renders, check out our VDB Packs!Check out Our VDB Products Here

Formnext 2024s additive manufacturing exhibition in Frankfurt offered a look at approaches to metal powder production and recovery. Among the participants was 3D Lab, a Warsaw-based developer of metal powder processing systems, introducing its ATO Suite to attendees. The company introduced the ATO Suite as a comprehensive system capable of producing high-quality spherical metal powders from various feedstocks, including manufacturing scrap. This capability is crucial for companies aiming to reduce manufacturing costs and enhance material innovation. The integrated and modular design of the suite allows researchers and manufacturers to customize powders, facilitating experimentation with novel alloys that can lead to significant advancements in additive manufacturing. The 3D Lab booth at Formnext 2024, demonstrating the ATO Suites potential in advancing metal powder processing workflows. Photo via 3D Lab.Jakub Rozpendowski, CEO of 3D Lab, emphasized the industrys need for innovative solutions. The interest we saw at our stand reflects the industrys need for solutions that go beyond the conventional, Rozpendowski stated. Innovating materials isnt just importantits critical to staying competitive in todays market. The ATO Suite addresses this need by offering unmatched flexibility, sustainability, and efficiency.Formnext 2024 also saw the introduction of new technologies within the ATO Suite. The ATO Wipe, an ultrasonic feedstock cleaning system, ensures the purity of wires and rods used in atomization, thereby enhancing powder quality and minimizing contamination risks. Additionally, the ATO Remote Control, a tablet-based monitoring and operation system, allows for real-time management of multiple ATO atomizers, optimizing productivity and reducing the need for manual intervention. These advancements complement existing components like the ATO Cast and Induction Melting System and the ATO Sieve, creating a unified solution for metal powder production and processing. The ATO Cast, part of the ATO Suite, designed for efficient induction melting and high-quality powder atomization. Photo via 3D Lab.The focus on sustainability and efficiency at 3D Labs exhibit mirrors broader industry trends. Jakub Rozpendowski noted, This years exhibition demonstrated that while the market is shifting, the need for innovation and sustainability remains constant. The ATO Suite is our answer to these challenges, enabling users to take control of their processes and redefine whats possible in additive manufacturing.Sustainability and Efficiency as Industry PillarsIn an era where resource optimization is essential, the ATO Suite supports a closed-loop manufacturing process by recovering and reusing 3D printing scraps, low-quality powders, and other production remnants. This approach reduces waste and lowers operational costs, providing a strategic advantage for businesses operating under tight economic conditions.PowderMonkeys, a brand of Launhardt GmbH specializing in polymer powders for powder bed fusion processes, introduced two new materials at Formnext designed to improve performance and sustainability in 3D printing. Established in 2021, PowderMonkeys supplies both desktop and industrial-scale systems with materials compatible with selective laser sintering and high-speed sintering platforms. Their new offerings, Monkey SiPA12 and Monkey RePA12 50-8 GB, enhance mechanical strength and thermal stability while reducing waste.Similarly, Stratasys unveiled SAF ReLife, a powder recycling solution that can convert waste PA12 powder into 3D printed parts, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of 3D printing processes. SAF ReLife repurposes waste material from powder bed fusion methods such as high-speed sintering and selective laser sintering, allowing for the production of high-quality parts with improved surface finishes. According to a Life Cycle Assessment led by Fraunhofer IPA, using SAF ReLife can cut the carbon footprint of 3D printing by up to 89% when powered by renewable energy sources. What will the future of 3D printing look like?Which recent trends are driving the 3D printing industry, as highlighted by experts?Subscribe to the 3D Printing Industry newsletter to stay updated with the latest news and insights.Stay connected with the latest in 3D printing by following us on Twitter and Facebook, and dont forget to subscribe to the 3D Printing Industry YouTube channel for more exclusive content.Featured image shows the 3D Lab booth at Formnext 2024. • 5 Kitchen Design Tips for a Functional and Stylish Space
    archeyes.com
Kitchen Design Tips | Clay Banks via UnsplashCreating a kitchen requires striking the right balance between practicality and visual appeal. Every choice, from the layout to the materials, plays a role in shaping the appearance and atmosphere of this vital space. To achieve a cohesive and effective design, its important to focus on five essential elements.Texture in Neutral SchemesTexture plays a vital role in enhancing neutral color schemes, even though its importance is often overlooked. It adds depth and visual interest to the kitchen while staying aligned with minimalist design principles.A minimalist kitchen can incorporate texture through materials like stone, wood, or metal, used for features such as cabinets, countertops, or backsplashes. Each material brings its own distinct tactile quality, enriching the neutral palette and ensuring the space feels warm and engaging rather than flat or uninspired. When working with textures in a neutral design, aim for balance and cohesion. For instance, the glossy finish of polished cabinets can complement the raw, natural look of a stone countertop. This interplay of textures creates contrast and adds sophistication, enhancing the elegance and simplicity of a minimalist kitchen.Focus on the DetailsPaying attention to details is one of the key kitchen trends when designing a kitchen. Certain areas demand particular focus. One example is the corners, which play a crucial role when deciding where to place cabinets, appliances, and other units.Ensure theres enough clearance and that doors or appliances have an appropriate swing direction. Whenever possible, try to avoid placing appliances too close to corners. Plan carefully to prevent doors from clashing or blocking each other when open simultaneously. The same level of care is necessary when determining the correct height for a microwave. While the ideal height is generally around 15 inches above the countertop, individual and family needs can affect this choice. For a more family-friendly setup, positioning the microwave below the countertop can be a safer and more convenient solution.Incorporate Smart AppliancesTo achieve a clean and organized kitchen aesthetic, consider integrating appliances that complement your kitchens design effortlessly. Choose devices that align with the overall color scheme. For example, if your kitchen features neutral tones, opt for appliances in shades like white, gray, or black to maintain visual harmony.Functionality is also key. Ask whether an appliance serves multiple purposes. This approach helps reduce clutter and keeps your kitchen simple yet efficient. Take an apple slicer, for instance; while its convenient, a knife can perform the same task while saving counter space and cutting costs.Think Smarter Jason Briscoe via Unsplash Sabrina Mazzeo via UnsplashWhen designing your kitchen, aim to simplify your daily routine. Prioritize convenience by ensuring everything you need is easy to access, from where you keep your knives to how you manage recycling. Plan ahead to create a setup that feels effortless and straightforward.Arrange frequently used items, like ingredients or utensils, in spots where theyre always within easy reach. Be sure to consider everyone in the house. For example, you could place popular snacks or go-to foods on shelves low enough for kids to grab on their own. While the fridge is often the usual spot for notes and reminders, you might find a chalkboard or whiteboard in a strategic location just as helpful. Choose the option that works best for your household.Dont forget to plan for plenty of conveniently placed power outlets. Consider where youll keep and use countertop appliances, and ensure the outlets are nearby. This will save you from constantly rearranging or moving things to plug them in down the line.Less Is MoreThe saying less is more is especially relevant when designing a minimalist kitchen. Keeping countertops free of clutter doesnt mean eliminating all decoration. Instead, selecting a few well-curated pieces can introduce a personal touch without conflicting with the minimalist style.Focus on items that offer both practicality and aesthetic appeal. For instance, a sleek fruit bowl, decorative cutting boards propped up against the backsplash, or a simple yet elegant wall clock can fit perfectly. Everyday essentials can also double as decor when arranged thoughtfully; a set of wooden spoons in a stylish pot or a polished espresso machine can enhance the space effortlessly. The goal is to find a harmonious balance between simplicity and warmth. While minimizing clutter is essential, avoid a cold or impersonal space. Finding that sweet spot will create a kitchen thats visually clean, inviting, and full of character.EndnoteDesigning a small custom kitchen that seamlessly combines functionality and style takes thoughtful planning and meticulous attention to detail. With custom kitchen design services, you can turn your ideas into reality, transforming your compact space into a personalized culinary retreat that showcases your taste and individuality.KitchensTips Leave a comment

  • Restless Architecture by DS+R is a meditation on movement at Romes MAXXI
    www.archpaper.com
Why should architecture sit still? This provocation is the point of departure for a current exhibition at Romes MAXXI, titled Restless Architecture, curated by Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R). Restless Architecture delves into post-war visionaries like Cedric Price, Kisho Kurokawa, Hans Hollein, Maurizio Sacripanti, OMA, Archigram, Anish Kapoor, Arata Isozaki, and others who wanted to see buildings get up off the ground and move. Models of canonical works abound, both built and unbuilt.Architectural representation is not equipped to capture motion, DS+R said in an artistic statement. Therefore, DS+Rs exhibition design supplemented conventional architectural models, drawings and photographs with newly commissioned kinetic models, full scale mock-ups, experimental prototypes, and video installations.A scale model of Cedric Prices Fun Palace is on view. (Musacchio, Ianniello & Pasqualini/Courtesy Fondazione MAXXI)The show is organized around several key themes. Projects selected for exhibition represent a hybrid of qualities: They needed to be mobile, adaptive, and operable. These qualities were meant to stand in contrast with the three pillars of architecture Vitruvius presented centuries ago: Firmitas, utilitas, and venustasnamely firmitas, and the virtue of rootedness to the ground plane. A physical model of Fun Palace, Cedric Prices unbuilt dream from 1964, was reconstructed for the show. And so was a sliver of Nakagin Capsule Tower by Kisho Kurokawa. OMAs Prada Transformer from 2009, the Italian Pavilion at EXPO 70 by Maurizio Sacripanti, and The Shed by DS+R were also on view.A section of Nagakin was reconstructed. (Musacchio, Ianniello & Pasqualini/Courtesy Fondazione MAXXI)Other case studies by Jean Nouvel, Gilbert Lzenes, Pierre Soria, and Architecture Studio also manifest at Restless Architecture. Ferdinand Ludwig, Frantiek Libra, Ji Kan, and Vladimr Karfk also have cameos. All of this ephemera engages interestingly with MAXXIs architecture, a quintessential Zaha Hadid project that also ruminates on the idea of frozen movement as a concept. At certain intervals, DS+Rs design plugs into MAXXIs ceiling, namely its linear ceiling beams that hover over the gallery space. DS+R designed purpose-built mobile curtains that weave through the space, containing small video theaters that come and go, interrupting the exhibition to provide an additional layer of reflection on the theme of movement, the architects shared.Restless Architecture will run through March 16, 2025. (Vincenzo Labellarte/Courtesy Fondazione MAXXI)Restless Architecture opened on October 25 and will run through March 16, 2025.The project team at DS+R included Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio, David Allin, AN contributor Phillip Denny, Bryce Suite, Daniel Landez, Alex Knezo, Charles Blanchard, and Tom Collins.

  • Sasaki completes addition at Frederick Gunn School in Connecticut
    www.archpaper.com
Students and faculty at Frederick Gunn School enjoy a stately milieu tucked away in Washington, Connecticut. The school was founded in 1850 and sits on a 220-acre campus. There, Sasaki recently completed an addition: The Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Center for Innovation and Active Citizenship. The Tisch Center is smack dab in the heart of Gunn School, overlooking its historic quad. It houses the schools innovative science, math, engineering, entrepreneurship, and citizenship curriculum. The addition has three gabled roofs and sits on a masonry baseboth of these design features tie in nicely with Gunn Schools historic and idyllic environs. At Tisch Center, some elevations are opaque and others are lined in glass, suggesting a dynamic interplay between solids and voids. The addition has three gabled roofs. (Jeremy Bittermann)At certain sections, fins regulate daylight entering the volumes where natural lighting is optimal. The white elevations are punctured by large apertures with dark stone gray casements around them, breaking up the facade. All in all, the new addition is meant to function as an interdisciplinary active learning environment where multiple departments coalesce. The Tisch Center employed myriad sustainability techniques that demonstrate Gunn Schools commitment to going green.Fins regulate natural light. (Jeremy Bittermann)The building is organized around a vast, generous atrium. There, students enter and exit a multistory, light-filled volume awash with sunshine. Occupants have the option to either go right to class or enjoy break out spaces furnished with chairs and tables suitable for leisure activities. The building is organized around a central atrium. (Jeremy Bittermann)Windows at Tisch Center are thermal glazed; this helps maximize the buildings energy efficiency and provide greater insulation. Materials for its millwork and community seating areas were sourced from reclaimed trees, further offsetting its carbon footprint. Architects at Sasaki opted to use geothermal wells that generate energy directly from the earth for Tisch Centers heating and cooling sources. Tisch Center also has roof-mounted solar panels.Classrooms boast large windows (Jeremy Bittermann)Technology labs were designed for efficiency and collaboration. (Jeremy Bittermann)Jonathan Tisch, a Gunn School alum who bankrolled the eponymous addition, thanked Sasaki for the design. When youre on the outside looking in, you will see all of the various departments, you will see the classrooms and the students learning, Tisch noted, commenting on the additions porosity. And then when youre on the inside looking out, Tisch added, youve got a view on the campus that deserves to be embraced. Thats whats so amazing about the design.
