The cyberattack caused widespread disruption across its hospital system, with some staff describing harrowing lapses in healthcare as a result, including delayed or lost lab results, and medication errors. The Black Basta gang was blamed for the attack, which saw the group steal patients medical information, like dates of service, lab tests, and procedure codes; payment information, such as credit card and bank account numbers; and reams of personal information, including patient names, addresses, and dates of birth. The hackers also stole patients identity documents, like driving licenses and passports. According to the Dept. of Health and Human Services list of data breach investigations, the Ascension hack ranks as the third-largest healthcare-related breach of 2024.Topics

  • BCN3D Announces Investment and Relocation as Omega I60 Marks One Year
    3dprintingindustry.com
BCN3D, a Spanish manufacturer of fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printers, has secured a new investment round intended to strengthen its position in the light industrial segment of additive manufacturing. The funding coincides with the relocation to a new production facility in a European technology hub. This site, now fully operational, is configured for increased throughput and refined quality control measures. The timing of the investment aligns with the first anniversary of BCN3Ds Omega I60, an industrial FFF printer introduced in 2023 and used for producing large-scale prototypes, tooling, and end-use components.Executives say the capital injection supports a strategic pivot toward scaled, efficient manufacturing. According to CEO Xavi M. Faneca, This move enables a focused effort on light industrial applications, addressing evolving customer requirements for greater reliability and expanded throughput. The European facility, now fully operational, is configured for advanced quality control and capacity expansion. Backing has reportedly come from established industrial investors who see potential in increasing the availability of systems that can fill the gap between laboratory prototyping and heavy-duty production lines. The BCN3D Omega I60. Photo via BCN3D.Introduced a year ago by the Barcelona-based equipment provider, The Omega I60 operates at speeds of up to 150 mm/s and includes a heated chamber and automated humidity controls for materials. It has been integrated into workflows at organizations that previously found traditional injection molding dies time-consuming or expensive to produce. Wisconsin Precision Casting, a U.S.-based investment casting foundry, integrated the Omega I60 into its operations to produce plastic patterns for low-quantity batches. The printers ability to produce multiple parts simultaneously at speeds up to 150 mm/s has significantly reduced production times and costs. Similarly, Camper, a global footwear brand, has utilized the Omega I60 to accelerate prototype development, enabling rapid in-house iterations and improving both the quality and lead time of new designs. The system was displayed at Formnext 2024, which took place last month in Frankfurt, demonstrating its capabilities to attendees who sought systems that bridge the gap between concept modeling and short-run manufacturing. BCN3D plans to continue refining both hardware and materials portfolios. Future adjustments may include further development of high-strength filaments or process automation features.Recent Large-Format FFF IntroductionsIn 2024, BigRep, a German company specializing in large-format FFF equipment, unveiled its VIIO 250 printer at RAPID + TCT. The VIIO 250 features a 250-liter build volume and integrated automation capabilities. According to reported specifications, it supports unattended operation and uses engineering-grade and fiber-reinforced materials, making it suitable for industries such as automotive that require consistent output and minimal operator intervention.Elsewhere, Raise3d, a 3D printer manufacturer focused on improving speed and precision, launched the Pro3 HS line and its Hyper Core filament series. The Pro3 HS printers employ motion control systems to maintain accurate deposition of fiber-rich filaments designed for enhanced thermal conductivity. This refinement in filament composition aims to improve interlayer bonding and mechanical integrity, ultimately supporting better Z-directional strength and surface finish.New BigRep VIIO 250. • AN reveals the top facades covered in 2024
    www.archpaper.com
Brought to you by:As the year comes to a close, AN is looking back on some of the most interesting building envelopes covered in 2024. The list includes projects from around the world with a variety of material expressionsincluding glass, aluminum, concrete, and timberas well as programmatic functions, featuring a library, community center, institutional facilities, apartments, and offices. To keep up to date on the latest projects and most innovative enclosures, subscribe to our Friday Facades+ Newsletter! A mural by Jos Parl was digitally printed on the facade of the Far Rockaway Library. (Jeff Goldberg)New York CityIn Far Rockaway, Queens, Snhetta has designed a new branch for the Queens Public Library using orange-tinted glazing to reference the neighborhoods dramatic sunsets, which cascade over the Atlantic Ocean. Each IGU was also digitally printed with the composition Style Writing, a mural by Brooklyn artist Jos Parl. Snhetta worked closely with the glazier to appropriately balance the glazings transparency and color to allow light into the building, while also making sure that Parl mural is legible from the exterior. A new building designed by HDR in Rochester, Minnesota for Mayo Clinic was wrapped in a highly custom double-layered facade punctuated by oculi windows. (Dan Schwalm)Rochester, MinnesotaTo signal the scientific prowess of a new research facility for the Mayo Clinic, HDR designed a complex double-skin envelope consisting of a perforated-aluminum scrim that encases an inner layer of glazing. Views were maintained through selected cutouts in the scrim, which the architects call oculi, that reveal spans of glass with the least potential for solar heat gain and glare. The project also had to consider how to prevent snow accumulation and allow for cleaning and maintenance. To overcome these challenges, the architects added ice cleats to the scrims sloped surfaces and devised a series of hatches through the scrim that allow window washers to clean the buildings oculi openings.GROUPWORKs 8 Bleeding Heart Yard uses aluminum to mimic the stone facades of the past. (Timothy Soar)LondonIn London, GROUPWORK has brought old buildings back from the dead with its project 8 Bleeding Heart Yard. The firm reclad an aging midcentury office with aluminum panels that are detailed to resemble the facades of eight historic structures that once stood on the site. Working with Donald Insall Associates, a preservation firm, GROUPWORK sourced archival drawings of the original block to inform the design. The building also possesses founder Amin Tahas trademark references to mannerist architecture (and Venturi Scott Browns iconic Sainsbury Wing) with purposefully incorrect or slipped details occurring across the envelope. During daylight hours the central control buildings stainless steel panels reflect the sky. (Egemen Karakaya)Karapinar, TurkeyIn the deserts of Central Turkey lies one of the European continents largest solar fields. To support this vast photovoltaic array, Bilgin Architects crafted a rectilinear control center building that is wrapped in a grid of reflected stainless steel panels. Set against the broad horizon of the desert, the building nearly disappears during the daytime, only to reemerge at night thanks to a luminous backlighting configuration. Each of the panels is of varying degrees of perforation, protecting a glazed inner layer from the hot desert sun.Board-formed concrete was chosen for the facade of Shanfeng Academy to emulate the white plaster which is traditionally used in Suzhou. (Zhu Runzi)Suzhou, ChinaIn Suzhou, China, OPEN Architecture created an extension to Shanfeng Academy, an elite bilingual school. The campus layout is experimental, consisting of five primary volumes that are accessible through a multistory network of gardens and circulation paths. What ties the five structures together is the use of white board formed concretethis material references Suzhous traditional architecture, which is often constructed using white plaster. Though largely opaque, the volumes receive light through punched window openings of various sizes and shapes. The Inuusirvik Community Wellness Hub serves Iqaluit, Nunavut, the fastest growing city in Canada. (Andrew Latreille)Iqaluit, Nunavut, CanadaLateral Office, a Toronto-based practice, has completed a new community center located in the arctic territory of Nunavut. Named the Innuusirvik Community Wellness Hub, the building serves the city of Iqaluits Inuit community. Faced with the territorys extreme weather conditions and challenging material limitations, Lateral Office opted to clad the structure with brightly colored corrugated-metal panels, a choice that allows the building to stand out in the snow. Interestingly, the building is not designed to repel snow accumulation, as are most structures in northern climates. Instead, taking cues from the Indigenous igloo construction, the buildings form actually encourages snow accumulation, which provides additional thermal insulation during the winter.Flad Architects designed stepped precast concrete panels for Torrey View, a life science research campus, to emulate the sites canyon geology. (Jason ORear)San DiegoIn San Diego, Flad Architects have designed a new life sciences campus located within a canyon. To emulate the geology of the surrounding site, the architects wrapped the structure in a series of ridged precast concrete panels that frame expansive window openings. The panels stepped geometry also functions to repel water and dirt. Flad Architects worked closely with Clark Pacific, the manufacturer of the panels to create the precise color and mix of the concrete. An outer layer of shingled glass panels marks the entrance to MITs newest building. (Dave Burk)Cambridge, MassachusettsThe Schwarzman College of Computing, a new computer science facility of MITs campus, innovates with the use of glass curtain wall. To improve the buildings thermal performance and create a unique visual identity, architects at SOM implemented a double-layer facade along the front entrance of the structure. The panels on this outer elevation are purposefully overlapping, acting as glass shingles, and are upheld by two large V-shaped braces from below. The Shady Brook Office Building was faced with Accoya wood slats that are expected to silver with age. (Robert Tsai)DallasThe Shady Brook Office Building reimagines office space design in Texas, a notoriously hot state. Instead of building an enclosed air-conditioned boxthe norm for office construction in TexasCunningham Architects opted to use passive design strategies for the project and place the buildings circulation on the exterior. These corridors are shaded by the slats of Accoya wood that wrap the building and are ventilated via the venturi effect, wherein wind is compressed through the corridors, creating a pleasant breeze. The accoya cladding is expected to silver overtime, allowing the building to age gracefully. The apartments are clad with overlapping precast concrete panels. (Francisco Nogueira)Leiria, PortugalA bold new apartment building in Leiria, Portugal negotiates the juncture between a residential neighborhood and an urban corridor. Designed by Bureau des Msarchitectures, a practice that includes artist Didier Fiza Faustino, the structure is faced with a patchwork of concrete and gold-finished aluminum panels, the latter a reference to the yellow hues of the adjacent neighborhood. The aluminum panels act as modular sunshades, allowing tenants to open and close windows throughout the day. Taking advantage of its site, the building is half circular in plan, adding a unique formal expression to Leirias urban fabric. To dive even deeper into the world of high-performance envelopes, check out our live Facades+ events, coming soon to a city near you!

In his oil paintings, bouquets and vast desert landscapes spread across the canvas as if melting or stretching into unrecognizable forms. When your eyes look too long at the same thing, your mind makes the change, he shares.Mata excavates the relationship between analog and digital realms, and his process incorporates both modes of artmaking. Preliminary sketches fill notebooks that travel everywhere the artist does, while he continually snaps photos and records video as references.AI experiments help Mata better translate the strange, disorienting outcomes that these rapidly evolving tools can produce. But his research isnt just visual. I enjoy experimenting by writing poems or haikus in AI and seeing what emerges. Its an exploratory process, he notes.Rendered in bold color palettes, the trippy paintings draw connections between digital mishaps and the ways our brains warp an image, whether in moments of intense focus, dream states, or with the help of hallucinatory substances. I like to think that entire worlds are created within dreams, and these worlds ask to be brought into the light, he says. Many of the paintings shown here are on view in Fata Morgana through January 25 at The Hole in Tribeca. • New iPhone auto-restart feature locks encrypted data after extended inactivity
    www.foxnews.com
Tech New iPhone auto-restart feature locks encrypted data after extended inactivity Wiping encryption keys makes it harder for cybercriminals to access sensitive information Published December 20, 2024 10:00am EST close How to factory reset your iPhone A factory reset ensures all your personal data is wiped clean. Your iPhone data just got more secure, thanks to a new feature in iOS 18.1. This update includes an important security measure designed to protect your device and its encrypted data after long periods of inactivity. An iPhone (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)Whats new?Apple has introduced an Inactivity Reboot feature in iOS 18.1, which automatically reboots your iPhone if it has been idle and unlocked for more than three days. This feature uses the Secure Enclave Processor (SEP) to monitor when your iPhone was last unlocked. If the device stays locked for an extended period, the SEP notifies the kernel, which triggers a reboot and kills the Springboard (the core of iOS). Illustration of lock on data (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)Why this mattersThe main benefit of the inactivity reboot is better data protection. By forcing a reboot after prolonged idle time, the iPhone essentially wipes encryption keys from memory. Once rebooted, the phone enters an "at rest" state. This makes it nearly impossible for cybercriminals to decrypt the data. Even if the device is left powered on for an extended period, the feature ensures that outdated forensic tools used by cybercriminals won't be able to access sensitive information. iPhones on table (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)Impact on law enforcementAlthough this new security measure is a big win for privacy, it has raised concerns with law enforcement. Specifically, they are facing more challenges when trying to unlock phones for forensic analysis. However, researcher Jiska Classen points out that three days is still enough time to coordinate steps with analysts to access the device. A police vehicle (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)How to enable the auto-restart featureTo enable this feature, all you have to do is make sure your iPhone is running iOS 18.1. Heres how to check and update:Go toSettings and tap on itClickGeneralTap onSoftware UpdateClickUpdate Now to download and install iOS 18.1WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)? Steps to update iPhones software (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)More ways to keep your iPhone secureWhile the inactivity reboot feature is a valuable security tool, its not a foolproof solution. To further protect your data, consider taking these additional steps:1. Set a strong password:Create strong passwords for your accounts and devices and avoid using the same password for multiple online accounts. Using the same password across multiple platforms will always make you more vulnerable, because if one account gets hacked, they all get hacked. Consider using apassword manager to generate and store complex passwords.2. Have strong antivirus software:The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. • The best MagSafe battery packs of 2024: Expert tested and reviewed
    www.zdnet.com
Since we often rely on our mobile devices to shop, communicate, travel, and more, it's paramount to keep your phone's battery boosted. But most of us can't stay tethered to a wall outlet.Thankfully, you don't have to. The battery market is packed with options that can boost your phone's battery life no matter where you are. From power banks to wireless charging stations, there's something for everyone's lifestyle and charging needs. Battery packs that use MagSafe technology to magnetically attach to your phone offer a more compact solution than traditional portable power banks, so you can ditch the charging wires altogether. What's the best MagSafe battery pack right now?I and other ZDNET experts went hands-on with several of the top MagSafe battery packs (including every pick on this list), spending time testing for charge speed, function, and other features during our everyday activities. Our tested pick for the best overall MagSafe battery pack is the newly refreshed Baseus PicoGo Magnetic power bank thanks to its practical design and refined functionality. Read on to learn more about the Baseus PicoGo and which other top-tested MagSafe battery packs may be worth considering for your wants and needs. Also: We've tested every iPhone accessory on this list. Here are the best Sort by All Value Efficiency Performance Design Compatibility The best MagSafe battery packs of 2024 Show less The Baseus PicoGo has a traditional rectangular design with rounded edges and corners, a sleek finish, and indicator lights on the bottom of the pack. It's fairly average weight for a battery, and it comes in four colors (blue, white, black, and pink). It can charge at 20W with wired charging or at 15W with wireless, magnetic charging. Plus, it can charge wirelessly and with the USB-C port simultaneously for a double device boost. When I tested this pack, it increased the battery of my iPhone 14 Pro from 25% to 60% in half an hour. About 40 minutes later, the phone was back up to 80%, with half of the battery capacity still left in the pack. Two things about this battery pack piqued my interest from the get-go when I first saw the product at an NYC launch event. First, it's priced at only $50 (even less during a sale), and its kickstand feature is upside down and all around (literally). The affixed ring on the back of this pack can be used as a kickstand in any orientation (it fully rotates) or used as a phone grip. While I've seen plenty of kickstand features before, I've never seen one like this.Current Baseus PicoGo users on Amazon said they liked the indicator lights, strong magnetic grip, and battery-boosting feature that the PicoGo pack provided, giving it a 4.4/5 star rating. Other users said they were expecting more power capacity and experienced warming on their phones. Keep in mind that most battery packs do get warm to the touch, and that is expected. It's also important to note that a 5,000mAh pack is enough for most people to have on hand for top-offs or while on the go, but it isn't large enough for repetitive recharges without the unit being charged up either. It's enough to charge most smartphone models once fully (or close to it); if you need more than that, I recommend looking at larger battery packs.Baseus PicoGo Magnetic Power Bank specs: Capacity:5,000mAh|Charging Port:USB-C |Power button:YesAuthor's note: The Baseus PicGo is currently sold out on Baseus' website at the time of publication, but it is available on Amazon in select colors. Instead of the charging indicator lights being on the side, they're now more visible, located on the back of the pack. This model is also a tad slimmer and lengthier than its predecessor, making it easier to transport. And while this Belkin pack is a true embodiment of a classic brick-style battery booster, there is still a place in my heart for it because it just works so well. Similarly to many picks on this list, it provides 5,000mAh of extra juice to your phone, which is a standard capacity for many MagSafe packs. Its design, though simple, fits snugly against my phone (no bumping onto the lip of my camera lens) and remains secure. Often, you'll see some gapping between the battery and the phone due to a disturbed magnetic connection, but not with this Belkin battery pack. Its secure grip and competitive battery speak for themselves. I took this pack to a Yankees game, to several late-night outings, to work, and even on errands, and I am impressed with the charging. You can expect between a 25-30% battery boost in about an hour to your phone. What's more, is that it comes with a built-in stand that easily swings in and out -- no folding required -- and while I originally thought this would be useless, I rather enjoyed being able to prop my phone up whenever. Perhaps the best thing about this Belkin pack is that it comes in a few fun colors, a nice feature many competitors still haven't matched.Like the previous iteration, this pack is still not the slimmest design I've ever seen. But the newly upgraded design offers a more comfortable and sleek user experience that feels great in handand doesn't feel as boxy as the pack really is. The color options made this a fun battery option. However, Belkin carries the black and white iterations as well as the 8k and 10k models. Show more Factors to consider when choosing a MagSafe battery pack: If you're looking to purchase a MagSafe battery pack, there a few things to keep in mind.Charging efficiency:Most power bank companies claim that your phone should last more than a day with 5,000 mAh. Therefore, battery packs within the 5,000-20,000 mAh range are likely best for most people's needs.Pass-through charging capabilities:Chances are it's not only your phone that could benefit from some battery but a whole device ecosystem. Pass-through charging allows other connected devices to charge simultaneously.Portability:A battery pack won't do you any good if you can't take it on the go. Consider options that are sleek, compact, and don't weigh you down.Use: It will be easier to select a MagSafe battery that works for your lifestyle if you spend some time thinking about where you'll be using it and when. On the train to work? While you're walking out and about? Just at home? Just in case of an emergency? Asking yourself these types of questions may help you narrow down what factors, such as size, charging capabilities, and charging rate, are most important to you.Price:Phones are expensive enough, so your battery pack doesn't need a hefty price tag to match. Consider budget-friendly options with a quality charge and features, and decide how much you're willing to spend to juice up your phone on the go. Show more How did we test these MagSafe battery packs? ZDNET went hands-on with all of the MagSafe battery packs on this list. Show more What is a MagSafe battery pack? The MagSafe Battery Pack allows for on-the-go, wireless charging that is easy and reliable since it attaches to the back of your iPhone. Show more Why should you get a MagSafe battery pack? A removable battery pack makes it easy to charge when you need it and ditch the battery when you don't. If you find yourself constantly looking for an outlet while carrying a wall adapter and cable, then a battery pack would be a good fit. Show more MagSafe battery pack FAQs Is MagSafe charging better for your battery? MagSafe charging is great for when you need your phone to charge while you are out and about, making it a better option for some. Just be careful to pay attention to your phone's temperature, as the MagSafe pack can make your phone warm, which is not good for your device. Show more Why did Apple discontinue its MagSafe battery pack? Apple's own MagSafe battery pack was discontinued following the release of the latest iPhone 15 lineup in 2023. Though Apple frequently updates its products, the discontinuation doesn't come as a surprise considering the iPhone 15 models all feature USB-C connectivity while the original MagSafe battery pack was equipped with Apple's lightning capabilities. Show more Why bother with MagSafe? MagSafe capabilities can enhance your user experience and your iPhone's functionality. Besides creating simpler, more efficient wireless charging, MagSafe technology opens the door for various accessories such as wallets, car vent clips and mounts, fitness mounts, power banks, grips and key ring accessories, and more to widen the iPhone experience and make your life as efficient as possible. Show more Should I get a power bank or a MagSafe battery pack? The answer to this question ultimately depends on your needs. Let's walk through it. A power bank can technically have MagSafe capabilities, and some MagSafe battery packs offer dual charging, but not all offerings are the same.Traditionally, a power bank refers to products without MagSafe capabilities, ones that rely on a lightning or USB-C cord to charge your iPhone and that cannot be affixed to your phone with a magnetic grip. These are great options for road trips, emergency charging situations such as power outages, or to store as a "just-in-case" item in your car, work bag, or home.On the other hand, MagSafe battery packs offer charging via magnetic grip. Most of these battery packs can be attached to your phone, making them perfect for air travel, commuting, and everyday activities. They also do not require a cord for charging, though some MagSafe battery packs can be used, like a battery pack with a cord. What's a better buy for you will depend on where and when you want to juice up your iPhone, so I recommend taking a look at our "Factors to consider" FAQ and really thinking about how your backup battery needs to function in your day-to-day life to be worth your money. Show more Will a MagSafe battery pack fit the iPhone 15? If you've recently bought a MagSafe battery pack for your iPhone, you shouldn't have any issues with fit or compatibility when you decide to upgrade to the new iPhone 15. However, if you have a first-generation MagSafe accessory, it may not fit perfectly due to design changes since the technology was first introduced. • Apple Warns Users Of iPhone Spyware AttacksWhat You Need To Know
    www.forbes.com
Apple will warn you of a suspected hacking attackNurPhoto via Getty ImagesApple has been sending users warnings of suspected spyware attacks by way of an iPhone hacking notification system for years. The chances are that you didnt know, especially if youve never received one. Heres another surprise: Apple doesnt offer to help but directs the victims to a non-profit organization instead. Heres what you need to know.Apples iPhone Spyware Hacking Notification System ExplainedIf you were to get a notification from Apple warning you that spyware hackers were targeting your iPhone, youd rightly be more than a little concerned. But how about if that warning didnt offer direct help from Apple itself but rather directed you toward a non-profit organization for advice instead? That, not would appear, iOS precisely what has been happening according to a new report published in TechCrunch. An example of just such a notification was shared with the publication: Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple Account. This attack is likely targeting you specifically because of who you are or what you do. Although its never possible to achieve absolute certainty when detecting such attacks, Apple has high confidence in this warning please take it seriously. In a posting explaining the system, Apple said: Since 2021, we have sent Apple threat notifications multiple times a year as we have detected these attacks, and to date we have notified users in over 150 countries in total.MORE FOR YOUWhy You Will Probably Never See An iPhone Spyware WarningConfirming that the vast majority of iPhone users will, thankfully, never see such a notification, Apple explained that the notifications are designed to inform and assist users who may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware attacks, and, importantly, have been so targeted likely because of who they are or what they do. With these kind of spyware hacking attacks being vastly more complex than your standard cybercriminal activity, and most consumer-facing malware, Apple said, mercenary spyware attackers apply exceptional resources to target a very small number of specific individuals and their devices. The notifications themselves come in two parts: a threat notification after the user signs into their Apple account page and a combination of email and iMessage notifications sent to the addresses and phone numbers associated with that account.I have reached out to Apple for clarification as to why iPhone users are directed to contact a non-profit organization, Access Now, rather than its own security engineers.

  • New Research Reveals Carbon Time Bomb In Our Homes, Appliances
    www.forbes.com
The store of fossil carbon in man-made buildings and products is rising, as our dependence on fossil ... [+] fuels continues to increase.Getty ImagesNew research has revealed that the amount of fossil-derived material used in construction, manufacturing and industry is now outpacing growth in the burning of oil, gas and coal, amounting to what scientists say is a "ticking time bomb" of emissions.Researchers in the Netherlands found that over a 24-year period, 8.4 billion tons of fossil carbon were added to buildings, products, roads and other infrastructure, while 3.7 billion tons of fossil carbon re-entered the environment as landfill, via burning, and as other sources of waste. The paper, published in the journal Cell Reports Sustainability, reveals that between 1995 and 2019, the share of fossil carbon going into products increased from about 5% to more than 7% of total fossil fuel usage. That's in spite of an ongoing global increase in the burning of fossil fuels for energy, with the Global Carbon Budget last month finding that carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels and cement will rise to a record 37 billion metric tons in 2024."The accumulation of fossil carbon in stocks is growing faster than that of fossil carbon-related emissions," says report senior author Klaus Hubacek, an ecological economist at the University of Groningen. "This means that, while we are in some countries on the path of decoupling fossil fuels from economic growth, the global economy is increasingly dependent on hydrocarbons for its material needs."In their paper, Hubacek and colleagues show that products made from fossil fuels, from the plastics used in appliances to bitumen used for road surfaces, are making up increasing proportion of our built environment, which researchers call the "technosphere." Thats a problem because that store of fossil carbon is temporary. In other words, its "a ticking time bomb, due to a potentially huge amount of additional emissions to the atmosphere," Hubacek tells me.MORE FOR YOUThe report is significant because, while a great deal of attention is given to emissions from the burning of fossil fuels, relatively little work has focused on the amount of fossil carbon in the things we make. "It was with amazement that, while doing this research, we realized that never before has been assessed the carbon balance of the technosphere at any level, not national nor global," Hubecek says.Previous research has shown that human-made products exceeded the mass of the living world in around 2020. This new study indicates that humans are continuing to outpace the natural world in the quantity of material we are producing. One explanation for the growing share of fossil carbon entering our buildings and products, suggests report author Franco Ruzzenenti, could be the rapid development of more complex products that require larger quantities of fossil fuel-based materials, such as plastics. The researchers found that synthetic rubber and plastic products, which are made predominantly from oil and gas, now account for 30% of fossil carbon in products and infrastructure. The more complex artifacts become, the higher the ratio between stocks and flows, Ruzzenenti explains.Another important factor is the fossil fuel industry's growth strategy: research earlier this year from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory shows that oil and chemical giants are on course to double or even triple the production of plastics by mid-century. As humanity begins to move away from burning fossil fuels for energy, oil and gas giants are looking to pivot to the production of non-fuel products, rather than conventional fuels, to remain profitable."Combined with the rubber and plastics embedded in various types of machinery, rubber and plastics represent more than two-thirds of fossil carbon in stocks of long-term products, both in households and in industry," says Hubacek. It is therefore "not surprising," he adds, "that the oil industry is leveraging on feedstock-related applications amid [the] energy transition. Indeed, our results suggest that the global economic path is heading toward a higher dependency on fossil fuels for feedstock."To tackle this, the researchers say, will require a multi-pronged approach, based on waste hierarchy of "reduce, reuse, recycle." This would require wealthy countries to "reduce consumption, effective management of landfills to mitigate carbon leakage to the environment, extension of product lifetime, and increase recycling to curb reliance on virgin fossil carbon stocks," the authors say. Most important, the authors stress, is the need for material accounting systems at the national and international levels. "A more effective carbon emissions inventory should account for the two-pronged purpose of fossil fuels," Hubacek tells me. "At present, this is rarely done."Earlier this year, researchers at the University of Oxford proposed a four-step roadmap for reducing the production and use of plastics, noting that individual action alone would not be sufficient to tackle the plastics problem. Early in December, negotiations in South Korea for an international treaty to curb plastic waste pollution failed to reach an agreement, with campaigners saying the process had been "captured" by industry.
