LIFEHACKER.COMTry 'Pile Cleaning' When Your Mess Is OverwhelmingThere are all kinds of cleaning and decluttering methods out there and each is suited for a different kind of person or mess. But what do you do when a mess is truly overwhelming? How do you even know where to begin, regardless of what technique you're using or what you're trying to do? That answer will likely be different for everyone, but I am a big fan of this approach I found on TikTok called the "pile method." What is the pile method? This idea comes from Sharon.a.life, a TikTok user who vlogs about motherhood, cleaning, and mental health. She recommends her pile method for anyone who feels overwhelmed, but has to tackle a "total disaster" of a room or home. To start, you simply pick up everything and toss it into a big pile. That's it. You can use a basket to gather things up and dump them into the pile, or just toss them one by one into the center of the room, but make sure you get it all. If something is out of place, if it's in your way, or if you just want to overhaul everything, toss it all in. At first, it's going to look even worse: It is, after all, a massive pile of stuff. But similar to the feeling you get when you take before-and-after photos of a big project, you're going to be motivated by the visual of the ever-shrinking pile. As it gets smaller and smaller, you'll feel more accomplished and keep going. This differs from other methods, like the ski-slope technique, because it doesn't require you to keep zipping around your room. Once you make the pile, you work right there in the middle. How to use the pile methodObviously, you start with your big pile. From there, you'll start making smaller ones. (It's a good idea to pick up some storage baskets for this, so you can bring each basket with you into its corresponding room when you're ready to put things away.) The piles should each represent a room or focus area, so consider one for kitchen items, one for each kid's room, one for laundry, etc. Don't forget a trash pile and a pile for donating or selling, too, if you have anything in those categories. As you sort, you'll see your giant pile shrinking, which will help you feel less overwhelmed. Once you've made your smaller piles in the baskets, take each basket to the room where its contents belong and put everything away. Here is where you'll call on some organizational techniques, making sure everything has a designated place and you're storing similar items together. Even though it starts out with a big mess in the middle of the room, this technique is ultimately much less overwhelming than trying to go around the room and pick up items, bring them to their proper place, and return to the scene of the crime over and over again.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 191 Visualizações

WWW.ENGADGET.COMSpaceX will soon send the Polaris Dawn crew off to attempt the first commercial spacewalkPolaris Dawn, a private space mission that aims to complete the first-ever civilian spacewalk, is expected to launch this week. On X, SpaceX said its targeting Tuesday August 27 at 3:38AM ET for liftoff of the Falcon 9 rocket that will carry the Polaris Dawn crew to orbit. Led by billionaire Jared Isaacman, Polaris Dawn plans to send its crew of four private citizens as far as 870 miles from Earth farther than any human has traveled since the Apollo program. The spacewalk, in which two of the crew members will step outside the SpaceX Dragon capsule, will take place at an altitude of 435 miles above Earth. The Polaris Dawn crew includes Isaacman, CEO of Shift4, as commander, retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Scott Kidd Poteet as its pilot, and SpaceX engineers Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon as mission specialists. Menon will also serve as the medical officer. The mission is expected to last about five days.Polaris Dawn and SpaceX completed a full rehearsal of launch day activities ahead of liftoff on Tuesday pic.twitter.com/qz2RD5bnVM SpaceX (@SpaceX) August 25, 2024 While only two crew members will actually leave the spacecraft during the flight, all will be exposed to the vacuum of space when the hatch opens the Dragon capsule doesnt have an airlock. Itll be a critical test for SpaceXs new Extravehicular Activity space suits, which the entire Polaris Dawn crew will have to wear to keep them safe. In an interview with Florida Today ahead of the mission, Menon said the suits have gone through extensive testing on the ground and expressed confidence in their performance. We absolutely know the suits can pressurize there, Menon said, adding that the team has spent a lot of time pressurizing the suits at this point.Polaris Dawn will also put Starlink laser-based communications to the test in space for the first time, and gather data to support research into the effects of spaceflight on human health. The mission comes several years in the making and is the first of three planned Polaris spaceflights. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/science/space/spacex-will-soon-send-the-polaris-dawn-crew-off-to-attempt-the-first-commercial-spacewalk-171538506.html?src=rss0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 202 Visualizações

WWW.FASTCOMPANY.COM3 ways to get better at learning effectivelyThe widespread arrival of generative AI models over the past few years has struck fear in the hearts of many people who suddenly realized that significant parts of their knowledge-intensive jobs could be automated. Succeeding in this environment requires continuous learning to both adapt to new technologies as they emerge and to develop new knowledge and skills that will enable you to stay relevant as the requirements for jobs change.Unfortunately, we tend to think about learning primarily as something done in classes. Indeed, getting additional formal education may be the right approach for adding tools to your skillset. But you should also be looking for opportunities to be learning all the time. Here are three ways to learn more effectively:Develop a learners mindsetYou should be on the lookout for opportunities to learn new things. Keep a notebook with you. When you hear about (or someone talks about) a topic you dont know much about, ask a follow-up question to get more information and context. Then, consider finding an article or book to learn more about it.Its often tempting to nod along in mock understanding when confronted with a topic you dont know anything about. It requires some vulnerability to admit that there is something you dont know. But you wont identify the gaps in your knowledge or work to fill them unless you are open to recognizing those gaps.Another advantage of admitting aloud and in public what you dont know encourages other people to do the same thing. Your example can help develop a learning culture within your organization. If you are in a leadership role, it is particularly important to model that learning process to promote this mindset across the team.Make learning part of your jobWhen you look at your specific job description, learn stuff is often not an explicit part of what you have been asked to do. Yet, you do need to continue your development in order to expand your capacities and move toward advancement.Simply writing down lists of things you dont know about will not help you fill those gaps. Real learning requires taking time to struggle with new material and to practice new skills. That time needs to be part of your work life and not something that you engage in only in your off-hours.Work with your supervisor to ensure that you actually add some focus on learning new knowledge and skills to your actual job description. Then, ensure that you clear space in your calendarat times when you are most likely to be able to concentratefor grappling with new ideas. You might attend some professional development sessions, do an online microcredential, or even consider taking full classes or a degree program. But, you can also be productive by having regular sessions within your work schedule where you get to read or work on a skill youre developing.Sneak some learning into your lifeOf course, you should also make it as easy as possible to find ways to engage with new material. If you have a long commute, add an audiobook on a topic of interest to your mix of things to listen to on the ride to or from work. Keep a professional book or article on your desk so that you can pick it up if you find yourself with 10 minutes or so free. For example, every once in a while, I have a meeting that gets canceled with no notice. Having reading material on my desk enables me to pick them up at those suddenly-free times and engage with something new.You can also make it a social experience. Lots of organizations have a book club, or are willing to start one, where several people can read something to discuss later. If you find it hard to self-motivate to read for professional development when youre doing it alone, you may find it more enjoyable, and beneficial, to share the experience with colleagues.Pick a way of engaging with material that you enjoy. Research seems to suggest that the concept of a learning style has no validitythat is, people who believe they learn most effectively with auditory or visual materialyet, you still may enjoy engaging with information in some ways more than others. You may like audiobooks best or prefer to curl up and readthe point is, when you have to choose to do something, youre much more likely to do it in the manner you find most receptive. Finally, dont be afraid to engage with a topic that falls way outside of your current job responsibilities. One of the beauties of learning new things is that you never know when something you encounter will spur a new idea. So, youll never know that you would have benefited from knowing until after youve actually learned it.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 197 Visualizações

WWW.DEZEEN.COMMirzoyan Studio renovates Stalinist-era flat in Kyiv with oak and stainless steelArchitecture practice Mirzoyan Studio has renovated an apartment in the historic centre of Kyiv, Ukraine, adding reflective surfaces and built-in oak furniture. The studio updated the two-bedroom apartment, which is within a Stalinka a type of building characteristic of the architecture of the Soviet Union under the leadership of Joseph Stalin in the 1930s to turn it into a rental property.Mirzoyan Studio renovated the Stalinist-era flat in KyivMirzoyan Studio founder Nastia Mirzoyan explained that the building's historical character posed certain structural limitations, requiring "careful planning to avoid compromising its integrity". To create the rental property, Mirzoyan opened up the apartment, which was originally the client's family home."To create a more spacious environment, we decided to merge the living room and kitchen into one common area," explained Mirzoyan.A shelving unit divides the kitchen and the living roomThe practice used partition shelves and built-in furniture to seperate the spaces. A wooden shelving unit takes centre stage in the main space, dividing the living room from the kitchen. The dining table extends out from the shelving unit towards the kitchen. Cabinets and a countertop finished in polished stainless steel are fixed in the primary working nook of the kitchen. The kitchen cabinets and countertop are finished in polished stainless steelNear the entrance, the team installed a full-height mirrored closet, creating a distinct entryway.Leftover broken marble was sourced from a local supplier for the flooring of the entryway and the bathroom.Read: Ukrainian studios "doing what we can, and sometimes what we can't" after two years of warThe studio's colour choices were influenced by the fact that the apartment is oriented towards the northeast and receives limited natural light."We opted for light and warm background colours to counteract this, creating a brighter and more inviting space," said Mirzoyan.A mirrored closet is installed in the entrywayThe property is dotted with reflective materials such as mirrors and stainless steel, which were chosen to "enhance the perceived depth and brightness".The living room and kitchen are lined with French windows opening into a quiet courtyard.A warm and light colour palette is used across the apartmentThe use of materials such as wood and terrazzo across the space is a reference to the building's heritage, aiming to add a "sense of historical continuity".Mirzoyan's design philosophy is focused on striving to create "spaces that blend local history with contemporary elements, balancing eclectic decisions to produce environments that feel both timeless and modern".The bathroom floor is covered in broken marbleOwing to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the practice faced significant challenges in completing this project."Sometimes builders simply could not come to the site, and sometimes they came and sat in a shelter for hours," Mirzoyan told Dezeen. "There were times when construction was halted for months, and the project budget was cut in half.""This experience has reinforced the importance of practical and durable design solutions that can withstand unpredictable conditions."Moreover, Mirzoyan foresees a trend towards "using locally sourced materials and supporting local craftsmen, contributing to the resilience and self-sufficiency of the community".Recently, Mirzoyan Studio also completed a hotel bar in Kyiv's historic Podil neighbourhood.Elsewhere in the city, Modektura has renovated an apartment featuring a balcony-turned-conservatory and Dihome has created a colourful industrial-style interior for a young couple. The photography is by Yevhenii Avramenko. The post Mirzoyan Studio renovates Stalinist-era flat in Kyiv with oak and stainless steel appeared first on Dezeen.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 188 Visualizações
