I've lived in Miami for more than six years, and the area has so much to offer visitors. As a Miami local, I enjoy exploring the culture and history in Little Haiti and Liberty City.North Miami Beach has some great outdoor activities, but South Beach can get crowded.Miami is one of the most popular vacation spots in the United States, and for good reason. Its proximity to the tropics ensures warm weather almost any day of the year, and Dade County's eastern border has miles of coastline.Plus, there's so much more to experience in Miami than expensive cabanas, parties, and Cuban food, especially if you want to support local social, cultural, and economic diversity,Having lived here for over six years, here are some of my favorite parts of Dade to visit and one you may want to skip. Immerse yourself in culture in Little Haiti.Little Haiti has some beautiful murals, too. India Amos Before moving to Miami, I didn't realize Southern Florida was home to such a large Haitian and Haitian-American population. If you're unaware like I was, do yourself a favor and spend a day immersing yourself in Little Haiti. Stroll through the Little Haiti Cultural, Complex, soak in the neighborhood's murals, and eat some pikliz and Haitian patties.Be sure to stop into Libreri Mapou, a bookstore that sells French and Creole titles year-round. Or, if you're a literary enthusiast, plan your trip in the spring so you can swing by the Little Haiti Book Festival, which has tons of booksellers, authors, and more. Allapattah has some incredible Dominican food.Allapattah is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Miami. India Amos You'll know you're officially in Allapattah when you see lampposts and street corners adorned with signs depicting alligators."Allapattah" is the Seminole word for "alligator," and the name stuck even though these reptiles mostly live in the Everglades now. It's one of the oldest neighborhoods in Miami, and many locals consider it one of the best places to order Dominican food in Dade. Club Tipico Dominicano is a popular pick.Plus, Allapattah is home to Rubell Museum and SuperBlue, two destinations where you can enjoy a renowned art scene. Liberty City and Brownsville have some of the city's best-preserved African American history.Learn some history in Liberty City. India Amos Liberty City and Brownsville are historic neighborhoods within Miami.Take a step back in time when you visit the Historic Hampton House in Brownsville, a converted hotel that once hosted the likes of Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr.Then, stop into the Joseph Caleb Auditorium or the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center to enjoy a local show from some of the neighborhood's most talented performers. Finally, end your day by ordering food from some of Liberty City's best restaurants, like World Famous Theo's Seafood and Pasta or World Famous Rib Shack. There's a lot to do in Downtown Miami.Downtown Miami has walkable areas. India Amos Situated on Biscayne Bay, Downtown Miami is an expansive neighborhood bustling with activities. This part of the city technically includes Brickell, Miami's Financial District, but I want to focus on all the attractions just north of the Miami River. This part of Miami is one of the few walkable places in the city, so ditch your car and spend time on foot or exploring via the free Metromover.Definitely take time to explore HistoryMiami Museum, Frost Museum of Science, Prez Art Museum, and Bayside Marketplace. Stay in the county but leave the city with a visit to North Miami and North Miami Beach.Visitors can kayak in Oleta River State Park. India Amos North Miami and North Miami Beach technically aren't part of the City of Miami, but they're part of Miami-Dade County and worth a visit on your next vacation.Outdoor activities are popular in these areas. If you have a day to spend in nature, hike or kayak through Oleta River State Park.Alternatively, if you only have a few hours to spend here, drop by Greynolds Park or the Ancient Spanish Monastery to enjoy an afternoon surrounded by sun and palm trees. Consider skipping South Beach.Miami Beach is just outside of Miami proper. India Amos Similar to North Miami, South Beach isn't technically in the City of Miami. It's part of Miami Beach, the official name for the city that lies just to the right of Miami proper. You have to cross one of Dade's many bridges to get to Miami Beach, and South Beach is one of the most popular parts of the beach you can visit. If you've never been to Miami, by all means, pass through South Beach. Its beaches, architecture, and nightlife are famous for a reason. However, I don't think it's the best beach in Dade. From a resident's perspective, South Beach often gets too crowded, and the amenities aren't as nice as you can find on other stretches of sand.Plus, parking is expensive on South Beach. Whether you want to book a hotel on Ocean Drive or spend a day on the sand, expect to pay a decent chunk of change. If you're looking for something quieter, try North Beach or Hollywood instead. Scientists Built Tiny VR Goggles for Mice
By Ed Cara Published December 29, 2024 | Comments (0) | The researchers' MouseGogles being worn by a mouse. Cornell University Humans arent the only ones getting in on the virtual reality craze. Scientists have just debuted a new technology that allows mice to more realisticallyand adorablyexperience VR in the lab. Researchers at Cornell University developed the tech, which theyve aptly named MouseGoggles. In experiments with mice, the rodents appeared to vividly respond to simulated stimuli while wearing the goggles. The innovation should make it easier for scientists to run animal studies involving VR. As funny as the idea of rodent VR sounds, there are actual applications for it. Ideally, VR can allow scientists to simulate naturalistic environments for mice under more controlled conditions. Right now, though, the most commonly used set-ups are pretty clunky, with mice often being placed onto a treadmill while theyre surrounded by computer or projection screens. These screens cant cover a mouses entire field of view, however, and it can take a long time for the animals to react to the VR environment, if they ever do at all. The Cornell researchers think that their MouseGoggles are a substantial step up from standard mice VR. Rather than trying to create a mini-Oculus Rift from scratch, they built their system using tiny, low-cost parts borrowed from smartwatches and other existing devices. Like other VR systems, the mice are placed onto a treadmill to use the MouseGoggles. Their heads are kept fixed to the goggles while theyre fed visual stimuli. It definitely benefited from the hacker ethos of taking parts that are built for something else and then applying it to some new context, lead scientist Matthew Isaacson, a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell, told the Cornell Chronicle, an university news outlet. The perfect size display, as it turns out, for a mouse VR headset is pretty much already made for smart watches. We were lucky that we didnt need to build or design anything from scratch, we could easily source all the inexpensive parts we needed. To confirm the viability of their system, the researchers exposed the mice to various stimuli, all the while measuring their brain activity and observing their behavior. Across a series of tests, the researchers found that the mice truly did seem to see and respond to the VR as hoped. In one condition, for instance, they tracked how the mice reacted to a gradually approaching dark blotch that could have represented a potential predator. When we tried this kind of a test in the typical VR setup with big screens, the mice did not react at all, Isaacson said. But almost every single mouse, the first time they see it with the goggles, they jump. They have a huge startle reaction. They really did seem to think they were getting attacked by a looming predator. The teams findings were published earlier this month in the journal Nature Methods. The development of more realistic VR for mice could have all sorts of benefits down the road, the researchers say. Accurate VR experiments might allow scientists to better map and understand the brain activity of mice modeled to have Alzheimers, for instance, particularly the regions tied to spatial navigation and memory; it might also improve basic research studies testing out potential treatments for brain disorders.Issacson and his colleagues arent the only researchers who have recently created VR systems for mice. But they say theirs is the first to incorporate tracking of the eyes and pupils. And theyre already developing a lightweight, mobile VR set-up that could be used with larger rodents like rats or tree shrews. Theyre also hoping to include more upgrades in a future iteration, such as finding a way to simulate taste and smell.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Kyle Barr Published December 9, 2024 By Kyle Barr Published October 19, 2024 By Kyle Barr Published October 10, 2024 By Kyle Barr Published October 4, 2024 By Kyle Barr Published October 2, 2024 By Florence Ion Published September 25, 2024

Hotel Welt Wien was designed with the aim of bringing the spirit of the "Wiener Werksttte" into the present. The building, a turn-of-the-century tenement, is located at a prominent corner in Vienna's 12th district. The design emphasizes respecting tradition while incorporating modern design, reinterpreting historical style elements in a contemporary way.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Close collaboration with local craftsmen allowed for the creation of unique details, including custom-made pattern rollers, carpets, as well as distinctive door grilles with brass spheres and brass floor plates. These features shape the hotel's design, giving it a unique identity. Upon entering the hotel, the influence of Viennese Modernism and Art Nouveau is immediately apparent. Geometric patterns and elegant accents run throughout the interior design. The challenge was to blend historical design elements with a modern approach while preserving the original character of the building.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! For the interior, materials were carefully chosen for both their aesthetic appeal and durability. Wood, brass, and glass play a key role in creating a warm and elegant atmosphere. Each piece of furniture was thoughtfully designed to combine functionality and beauty, giving the spaces a distinct personality. Attention to detail is evident in every room, reflecting our belief that small touches make a significant impact. The result is a space that respects the historic legacy of the existing building while embracing modern design solutions. My Hero Academia: The Significance Of Hero Names, Explained
In the world of My Hero Academia, quirks and heroes remain the main focus of the story's narrative, leading to one significant element being overlooked quite often hero names. Despite seeming like a rather simple concept, hero names hold considerable weight in the series. This is evident from the fact that most characters in My Hero Academia are better known by their hero names instead of their actual names, and the same goes for fans who remember their favorite characters by their hero names.

What to Expect From Grand Theft Auto 6 in 2025
There's nothing quite like the pedigree of Rockstar Games in the industry. While the company once put out tons of beloved games, including Midnight Club and Bully, its focus over the past few years has dwindled to a couple of powerhouse IPs: Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto. Red Dead Redemption 2 became an instant classic, and Grand Theft Auto 5 became the most profitable entertainment product of all time. That alone has built up a ton of hype for Grand Theft Auto 6to the point that fans have treated it as a matter of when, not if, well before Rockstar ever confirmed it was in development.

Polygon video picks Polygons favorite Polygon videos
We know you watched a few videos this year, but did you watch a few Polygon videos this year? To celebrate another year in the can, the Polygon video team gave each producer the chance (and assignment) to shout out their favorite work from 2024 to give you an idea of where to dive in.Clayton AshleyThe Great Game: The Making of SpycraftThis video is more like my favorite of the last three years, because my colleague Simone de Rochefort and I worked on it at least that long. The Great Game: The Making of Spycraft is a feature-length documentary about the titular video game Spycraft: The Great Game. That big-budget, full-motion 1996 video game featured both a former KGB major general, Oleg Kalugin, and a former CIA director, William Colby. The parallel stories of two titans of Cold War espionage, and the making of a technology-pushing game, became too fascinating to ignore.Working on this video was unlike anything else Ive done at Polygon. When I threw out the idea to have Jamelle Bouie of New York Times op-ed, TikTok, Unclear and Present Danger podcast fame narrate the documentary, I never dreamed itd actually happen. We also had outside help for narration, graphics, and all the complicated production issues that full-length documentary creation entails, and its a testament to the whole team that it turned out as good as it did. If you spend the time to watch, I deeply appreciate it!Guy talks About Starship Troopers for 25 minutes NOt clickbaitIm a big fan of Starship Troopers. Not only is it my favorite of Paul Verhoevens films, its one of my Letterboxd Four, and if my friends are any indication, its an R-rated feature our generation was exposed to at a very not R-rated age. Years later I learned and appreciated that it was a biting satire, perhaps the most biting in decades if the number of dissenting critics it fooled in 1997 is any indication. Thats a point that Pats video exquisitely illustrates. His video is actually a lot about Starship Troopers, both the movie and the book, as well as one of my favorite games of the year, Helldivers 2.But thats not why I think its important. Of course, I think all of our videos are important, but I think this video is important in a more urgent way. Because you know. (Im gesturing around at everything. I realize now that this is much harder to convey in writing than in video.)While Starship Troopers and Helldivers 2 take center stage, what the video is really about is that its important to think critically about satirical media in a world where Get it? Its fascist isnt a joke. That even incisive, penetrating satires like Starship Troopers and Helldivers 2 arent without their flaws and limitations. That sometimes it helps to dive deeper not just into the commentaries filmmakers make, or the books that inspire movies like Starship Troopers (well, especially not that one), but also the history that inspires a director to make a movie about how war makes fascists of us all (yes, even that war).Christina XTINA GG GaytonSubtle nerd clothing recommendations @polygon this is from the atsuko pokemon collection but lmk if you have any other good recs for clothes like this!! ty nerdy fashion gods #pokemon #nerds original sound Polygon My favorite video I did this year is this TikTok on subtle nerd clothing. Its a sartorial interest Ive had for a while and Im glad so many people could relate to it. The video is about how geek apparel used to always be very bold and in-your-face, like Hot Topic T-shirts with the logo and name of the game on the front of a shirt in big, colorful lettering. These days you can find a myriad of clothing to express your interests in more subtle ways that would only be recognizable to other fans of the IP, such as the Unown pants from Atsuko (that I think might be out of stock now??).Sonic the Hedgehog Interview 3: Into the Shadow RealmMy favorite video from one of my co-workers is the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 interview Pat did with Ben Schwartz. I was impressed by their improvisational chemistry. I think its a testament to the creative possibility for interviews and how they can be fun and interesting. It felt like watching two friends rather than a professional interview. Also, I LOVED Sonic the Hedgehog 3. It was so good.Patrick GillTekken is still weird and thats what makes it greatI loved making this video because I got to dip into all of my little interests and tie them together: fighting games, animation, martial arts films, and weird wrestling history. But on a more personal level, I wanted to eulogize the spirit of martial navet.Growing up in a pre-MMA world with limited internet access, it was entirely possible for kids like me to go to our strip-mall karate classes and practice throwing chambered punches from our deep horse stances, believing we were learning how to fight. When I saw schoolyard scraps devolve into clumsy, red-faced grappling, I could tell myself it was because neither one of themknew how to execute a well-targeted palm strike. My senseis word was law, and my sensei said if an opponent grabbed my lapel like this, I could counter with a wrist lock like this. It was a comforting dream. Anyhoo! This is a video about how fighting affects fantasy and how fantasy affects fighting. I have a lot more to say on the topic and maybe, one day, I will!Stop lying about Assassins Creed Unitys Notre DameBoy, do I love to see a myth busted. Take that, you stupid myth!Sometimes, you hear something, and you believe it. Maybe you repeat it to someone else perhaps because it confirms how you think about the world, or because it makes you mad, because it is just nice to think about. Did you know Rutger Hauer improvised that entire Blade Runner monologue on set? Wow!Its especially easy to do this on the internet, where I can overlay some text on a picture of Keanu Reeves and convince a not-insignificant number of people that he holds opinions on the topic of fake friends.I love it when someone puts the time and effort into thoroughly correcting the record. But once is never enough. Simone has made this video a few times now in different forms. Misinformation can be genuinely harmful, or just seriously annoying, but it is always hard to kill.It comforts me to know that each time this particular myth swells up from the roiling bogs of discourse, Simone will be there to fight the good fight.Simone de RochefortI played Elden Ring wrong for two yearsThis is maybe not my most substantial work, but I love when I am inspired to make something because shit is just happening to me. The anecdote at the core of this video is that I spent two years brute-forcing and cheesing my way through Elden Ring, only for my boyfriend to look at my build and go your shits fucked. But also: Its about how I was having fun anyway. But also: The response to the video has been my favorite part. I was understandably a bit apprehensive about putting out a video basically saying lol Im bad at video games. But theres a ton of people in the comments being encouraging, or sharing their stories of sucking at Elden Ring, and it made me really happy! For me, having fun isnt synonymous with being good at something, and it looks like Im not alone!Elden Ring does this better than anyone elseThe thing about this video is that I was going to make it. I like making videos about how game mechanics work, and the idea was to do one about how cloth is modeled. I turned to Gwen Frey, who I had interviewed about the Bread Boy in BioShock Infinite, because she had worked on video game cloth design before. We had a great interview, and then I sat down to write the video, and it just didnt work.Separately, Pat had pitched a video about Elden Rings costuming and how it communicated character design. This also didnt end up going anywhere.Until.Pat needed an idea for his next video, and I needed to stop lying to my boss about how I was making a video about cloth. The solution was clear: Pat was going to make a video about cloth. And he knocked it out of the park. The great thing about Pat is that hes incredibly skilled at observing and explaining tiny details in games. And there are so many tiny details in Elden Ring. He takes a huge topic (ALL OF THE CLOTH IN ELDEN RING???), and makes it funny and digestible and educational. He did a much better job with this than I would have, and I love it because he succeeded where I failed. And thats why its so great to work on a team as talented as this one.
