• Bluesky launches a Trending Topics feature in search
    www.engadget.com
Social media platform Bluesky has launched Trending Topics into beta, the company announced in a post on its platform. The new feature is one of the most-requested by users and matches a function that has been on rival Threads for around nine months, and on X (Twitter at the time) since at least 2017.The Trending section shows the top viral content on the platform, with topics like "Christmas," "Nosferatu" and "Wikipedia" (thanks to Elon Musk) currently on top. It can be found by clicking on search in both the desktop version and mobile apps, or you can disable it altogether in the settings, TechCrunch noted. Any words that you have muted won't appear in Trending topics either.Bluesky recently hit a big milestone with 25 million users, many of whom recently fled X following the US elections. Though still relatively small compared to Threads and X, users have remarked on the high levels of engagement along with the lack of bots and harassment compared to Elon Musk's platform. Other highly requested features still not implemented include bookmarks, editing, verification badges and private posts. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/social-media/bluesky-launches-a-trending-topics-feature-in-search-140049208.html?src=rss

  • Experts say this is how to set 2025 career goals if youre feeling burned out
    www.fastcompany.com
After spending months working toward a career changing goal, a client recently told executive coach Anne Shoemaker that, while she believes its what she wants, shes not sure if shes in the right place to make any decisions about her goals because she is feeling burned out.Shoemakers advice: Do nothing. When youre operating from a place of burnout, everything feels like a major lift, Shoemaker says. We cant make great decisions when were emotionally and cognitively depleted. The client expressed relief that Shoemaker had given her permission to do nothing, and Shoemaker and her client agreed to reconvene in late January.Executive coach and leadership consultant Jen Dulin agrees with Shoemakers advice because, she says, the biggest mistake is forcing ourselves to set goals when we are feeling burned out. What we need when were setting goals is access to things like creativity, strategic thinking, the ability to execute or think about how well act on our goals, and we dont have access to those things when were in a stressed or burned out place, Dulin says.According to MyPerfectResumes Employee Burnout Survey, 88% of respondents report experiencing burnout. However, not everyone has the luxury of doing nothing until late January. Most employees will be tasked with setting goals for 2025 as part of their annual performance review. Here are five ways to set goals this month even if youre feeling burned out.Set month-by-month goalsFocus on what you can achieve by the end of January rather than trying to set goals for the entire year, Shoemaker suggests.Theres nothing thats more demoralizing than feeling like we need to dig deep into ourselves from a well thats too dry to produce, Shoemaker says.Once you decide on a goal for January, think about what you can achieve in February. Setting month-by-month goals for the next six months feels less overwhelming than trying to set goals for the entire year, Shoemaker says.Set the right moodBefore you sit down to think about goals, change your physiology, Dulin recommends. Try breathing deeply, going for a walk, or listening to music. We cant think our way out of stress, Dulin says, so just sitting down and grinding through it wont lend itself to very meaningful goals.Dulin also warns against squeezing in goal setting sessions in between meetings. Setting goals requires the right side and left side of our brain, so we need to create a little bit of space before we physically sit down and do it so that were not feeling rushed or overly stressed, she says.Find inspirationDont confine your goal-setting sessions to your office or your office hours, Dulin says. Notice when you have the best energy to do creative work and schedule your goal setting session for that time. If youre inspired by something you read or a podcast youre listening to, jot down notes. Go somewhere that energizes you and makes you feel comfortable and creativea museum, a coffeeshop, a favorite hiking trail. Find a place that you feel connected to or inspired by, Dulin says.Allow for different levels of progressBuild into your goals permission to meet different levels of progress. Make allowances for what youre capable of on days when youre feeling replenished versus days when the tank is completely empty, says leadership and career coach Phoebe Gavin. Keep in mind that there is progress that requires five minutes of work versus an hour versus half a day versus a weekend, she says.Expect to fail and expect failure to be part of the process, Gavin says. Its not about how long you can up your streak of meeting your goal but how quickly you can go back to trying to meet it again when you miss the mark in some way.Examine the cause of your burnoutBurnout can be caused by different factors, so if you want to remedy burnout, you need to determine the source, Gavin says. Is your burnout related to mental or physical depletion? Burnout can be related to boredom when youre not being challenged at work, or it can be related to values misalignment. Those are very different problems, and the solution for one wont solve the other, she says.Figure out what needs to change for you to not feel worse and what sorts of things you need to do to start to get better, and make space in your life for those things, even if its difficult to do in the beginning, Gavin says.

  • The best new tech to make your home more efficientand slash your energy bills
    www.fastcompany.com
A handful of purchasing decisions in your own life can make an outsized difference for the climate, from choosing an electric car (or replacing your car with an electric bike) to adding solar on your roof. The options keep improving: New products look better, work better, and are getting more affordable. This may also be the best time to buy them, since the incoming Trump administration wants to kill incentives like tax credits and rebates. Here are a few of the best new products. These induction stoves can outperform gasGas stoves have gained notoriety for ruining the air quality in your kitchen, and they also leak methane, a potent greenhouse gas. (The supply chain that brings gas to your kitchen is an even bigger polluter, from leaks in gas wells to pipelines.) Traditional electric stoves have often been seen as a less-desirable alternative. But the newest induction stoves outperform gas. Both Copper and Impulse Labs make induction stoves that come with batteries. That makes the stoves more powerful. It also means that installation is simpler, because older houses wont need rewiring to handle the equipment. Using batteries also keeps the stoves running during power outagesand even makes it possible for the appliances to help store renewable energy for the grid.An ex-Googler designed a heat pump youll actually want in your homeHeat pumps now outsell gas furnaces, and have a certain rabid fan base. But typical mini-split heat pumps, which efficiently heat and cool your home, can look clunky. The installation process can also be a painespecially as growing demand for electricians makes it harder to find someone to do the work. Quilts heat pump technology is designed to look better both inside and outside a house. The company also works directly with contractors, so customers dont have the same challenges with installation. Its rolling out first in the Bay Area, though other startups are trying to make installation smoother for heat pumps in other regions).Home batteries are getting betterAs climate change fuels extreme weather, its more likely that the electric grid will lose power from a hurricane or wildfireand a growing number of people are choosing to install home batteries so they can keep the lights on in an emergency. One new option from Biolite is affordable and slim enough to fit behind a refrigerator. Lunar Energy, a startup launched by a former Tesla executive, makes a larger-capacity home battery system designed to be installed along with solar panels on the roof. Its similarly sleek and fast to install, in a modular design that can be scaled up or down depending on the homes energy needs. There are more options for EVs than ever beforeThere are now more than 40 different models of battery-electric vehicles on the market in the U.S. Thats small compared to China, where there are more than 100 new options. But it still means that no matter what youre looking for in a vehicle, you can probably find a viable electric version. City-dwellers who dont drive long distances might choose the Mini SE, which starts at around $30,000 (used models can be half that price). If you want an SUV or a truck, there are options from Rivians smartly-designed vehicles to the hulking Ford 150 Lightning to the tiny new Telo MT1, which has a small footprint but can haul as much as a larger truck. As bidirectional charging becomes more common, EVs can also help cut your energy costs by charging and providing backup power for the grid at key times, along with powering your own home in emergencies.A long list of incentives can help cut costsRight now, its possible to get federal tax credits on a long list of technology, from new and used EVs to home batteries, geothermal heating, heat pumps, EV chargers, rooftop solar, weatherization, and new electric panels. Low and middle-income households can also use rebates for some products that have rolled out in a handful of states. Some states and utilities have additional incentives. But Trump wants to get rid of the federal perksso this may be the best time to upgrade.
