WWW.POLYGON.COMYou could spend the rest of your life watching amazing animated shorts on YouTubeThe upside of YouTubes You watched this one video, so you must want to see everything else we have in that vein algorithm is that it helpfully surfaces things you didnt even know to search for, based on interests youve already demonstrated. The downside is how fast that algo can get samey: Just because you watch one single episode of Google Translate Sings doesnt necessarily mean you want your YouTube launch page to suddenly push a thousand more episodes at you from the same channel. But if you ever want the YouTube equivalent of a timeline cleanse and/or rabbit hole you could fall down pretty much forever, its easy to get there with one simple trick. Watch a few stand-alone animated shorts on the service, and YouTube will instantly start populating your page with an infinite variety of visually creative, experimental, and above all, ambitious short stories. There arent many outlets for short films these days, apart from sites like YouTube, Vimeo, and so forth: The days of celebrated animated-shorts tournes are over. (Almost?) Outside of film festival showcases or museum events, there arent really good places for animators to sell their shorts for profit. So a lot of them post their work on YouTube, where it can be seen and distributed, garner word-of-mouth recommendations, and serve as a calling card for young talent looking to step up to feature films. All of which means theres a lot of short animation on the site a nonstop self-curated shorts festival coming from people who not only want to tell visually oriented, bold stories, but sometimes want to change how those stories are told. Some of this animation comes from students Frances famed animation school Gobelins puts its students projects online, and its library alone is a feast. (See also the CalArts channel, the Sheridan College channel, the Rubika channel, and so forth.) Some of the videos are from small studios or independent creators around the world, looking for eyeballs and recognition. Many of these shorts have been in festival competitions. Some are slick, professional work that apes Pixar or DreamWorks styles of production and storytelling. Many, many more are experimental, playing with design, style, mood, and expression. You can often tell pretty quickly from a videos thumbnail what kind of style the creators are going for.If you want to start someplace simple and satisfying, Im a longtime fan of Jacob Freys 2014 mega-award-winner The Present, a simple, heartwarming story about a teenage gamer and the new puppy that disgusts him:Want the exact opposite of that? Check out the stylized, liquidly beautiful action in this dark Indian fable about climate refugees in a flooded city facing down a killer tiger:From there Want something longer and more elaborate and ambitious?Something experimental and goofy?A haunting, melancholy mood piece?Weird, beautiful stop-motion?Old-school paper cutouts?Shiny high-tech sci-fi?Fan films in familiar settings?A charming friendship story that feels like a classic childrens picture book?Dinosaurs in suits?Maybe just an adorable kitten from hell?Regardless of what youre in the mood for, its pretty easy to dive into YouTubes massive collection of animated short stories and get lost there. Just remember to bookmark your favorites. Im still trying to track down a neat one I saw years ago about the unfortunate courting habits of weird alien critters that looked sort of like electric lemurs, living in an elaborate, beautifully lit city. Ive lost it amid all the other shorts in my timeline. If you run across it on your own rabbit-hole dive through YouTubes endless supply of neat animated shorts, let me know, would you?0 Comments 0 Shares 28 Views

LIFEHACKER.COMThis Spiked Hot Chocolate Recipe Is Perfect for a Cozy New Year's EveWe may earn a commission from links on this page. Were setting sail for 2025, and regardless of how it turns out, I know how itll startcold. Hot drinks are just the thing to keep the festivities cozy and uplifting, so lets ring in the New Year with boozy hot chocolate. Thats no typo. But dont fret, this is not a particularly complicated cocktail recipe. Its dd tantehot chocolate with a twistand it's the best cocktail for a cozy New Year's celebration.Earlier this December, I went on possibly the most Christmas-y trip to Copenhagen. Denmark, as you may already know, consistently out-ranks most of the world in happiness. Theyre also well-known for festive Christmas markets. As a fan of both happiness and sparkly things, I wanted to see what it was all about.Although I cant speak to the larger factors of their countrys happinesslike income, life expectancy, and community supportI did see their holiday markets. Youd be hard-pressed not to run into at least one a day. Every neighborhood had their own mini-market, if not a large one, and I must say, it was hella festive. Lights and evergreen garlands lined the tiny pop-up stalls, they sold brunkager (crisp ginger cookies), glgg (heres the recipe I use), and a drink Id never seen before: dd tante.Dd tante, which means dead aunt" (the internet was not helpful at explaining the name's origin), is commonly made during these cold months in Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands. In other regions you might hear it called a lumumba, likely after Patrice Lumumba, the first prime minister of the independent Democratic Republic of the Congo who was assassinated. It's traditionally made with rum, but to keep the liquor variation options open, Ive been referring to it lately simply as spiked hot chocolate. Credit: Allie Chanthorn Reinmann A lazy winter cocktail is bestThis sweet drink mixes winter's festive coziness with hibernation laziness. Frankly, that cannot be beat. As I mentioned, you simply swirl a shot of rum into your favorite hot chocolate mixture, homemade or powder pouch. Its common for this drink to be topped with whipped cream at the Christmas markets in Copenhagen. While that extra step reduces the lazy-factor, whipped cream is never a bad idea, so why deny yourself?Like all cocktails, variations are afoot. If you dont like rum, use whiskey, brandy, bourbon, or scotch. Personally, I recommend Goslings Bermuda Black Rum. The particularly heady aroma of vanilla in this rum is a fantastic match for hot chocolate and whipped cream. In fact, its so complementary that its hard to detect. I dont say this often, but please measure the ounces so it doesnt sneak up on you at the New Years Eve bash.Again, you can spike any hot chocolate you like. Ive been adding rum to my Easy Drinking Chocolate recipe, which is creamy, deeply chocolatey, and takes mere minutes on the stovetop.Dd Tante Spiked Drinking Chocolate RecipeIngredients:1 cup of cold liquid (water, milk, or a combination), divided1 teaspoons cornstarch cup (2 ounces) good quality chocolate chips (like Guittards 46% chips)Pinch salt1 tablespoon sugar (optional, if your chocolate is very bitter)1-2 ounces Goslings Bermuda Black Rum1. Divide the cold liquid. Three quarters of a cup into a small pot over medium-low heat, and one quarter into a small bowl with the cornstarch. While the pot heats, stir the cornstarch and liquid to dissolve it fully.2. Once the milk begins to bubble strongly around the edges, stir in the cornstarch mixture. Stir continuously until it thickens, about 10 to 20 seconds. Turn off the heat and add the salt and chocolate chips. Let the mixture sit for one minute to soften the chocolate. Whisk until smooth. Taste the drinking chocolate. Add sugar if desired, and whisk in the rum. Enjoy immediately.0 Comments 0 Shares 28 Views

LIFEHACKER.COMUse These Apps to Track All Your New Years ResolutionsWhat kind of New Years resolution you make depends on your unique goalswhich means you need a way to track your progress that is just as unique. If your resolution is to cut back on social media use and your friends is to run a faster mile, you wont measure success the same way, right? There are different apps out there that will help you actually reach your goals this year. This story is going to recommend some apps that can help you track specific resolutions. Here's a rundown of the best general progress tracking apps. What are the most common New Years resolutions?Per Statista, the top New Years resolutions among people who have made one or several for 2025 are as follows:To save more money (21%)To eat healthier (19%)To exercise more (17%)To lose weight (15%)To spend more time with family and friends (14%)To quit smoking (9%)To spend less on living expenses (9%)A few from last yearlike reducing work stress and lessening time on social mediadidn't make the cut this time around, but I'm still including some apps for those in case you're interested in carrying on a goal from 2024. Notably, losing weight gained some traction, rising a few spots from last year, and quitting smoking is a new entrant, too. Interestingly, 43% of respondents said they're not making resolutionsif you're thinking of doing the same, consider how easy these apps would make creating and sticking to one first. The best app for saving money: QapitalThere are a bunch of great apps out there that help you budget, but if youre ready to get serious this year and save money in a big way, try Qapital. This one is great for a New Years resolution because it makes you do a little work, unlike some of the AI-powered budgeting apps that use algorithms to set aside money for you. With Qapital, you set your own rules, which means you still have to flex your own self-control muscles and actively strive toward your resolution. For instance, you can set up a rule that says when you buy a coffee, the app also moves a certain amount into savings. You can also program it to round up change on purchases and move it into your savings account. Plus, you can set goals within the app and it will create visual representations of how much youve saved toward them, which is great for people who need to see their progress. Its free for a month, but after that, youll pay $3, $6, or $12 per month, depending on what features you want. A basic plan lets you create unlimited savings goals and transfer money between them, plus partner with another user to save together and track joint spending. More advanced versions get you the option to have a Qapital debit card or track your weekly cash spending. The best app to eat healthier and/or lose weight: MyFitnessPalI am biased, as I'm now going on 13 years of using MyFitnessPal, but the fact that I've returned to this app again and again since college at least proves it has something going for it. What I love most about MFP is that so many foods are already entered into the database, meaning I don't have to actually research nutrition facts and enter them into a spreadsheet. I just type in what I ate and get an immediate breakdown of its various nutrients, calories, and details. I'm also really motivated by anything that "gamifies" my experience, so MFP's daily reminders not to break my streak of food and exercise entries are helpful to me. Your daily nutritional intake is shown on a graph that is easy to understand and ideal for visual learners and even the free, basic version of the app is useful. Still, the premium mode, for either $79.99 a year or $19.99 monthly, breaks down carbs, protein, and fat and allows you to scan barcodes for easy inputs, so it's a better option if you're serious about tracking your nutrients throughout the year.I also recommend this app for weight loss, if that's your goal (like it is for 15% of people compared to the 19% who want to eat healthier). When I've endeavored to lose weight before, MFP has always been helpful, since it helps me see my calorie breakdowns in a way that is very easy to understand. I've tried other apps and programs, like many of us have, and found them too convoluted and not as easy to stick with. The best app to track exercise frequency: StrongIf you want to work out more, it will help you to see your progress with each trip to the gym (or at-home session, or whatever). For that, try Strong, an app that lets you input the exercises you do and creates graphs showing your gradual improvement in weight, sets, body fat percentage, and more. It includes instructions on how to do a variety of exercises, which is nice if you arent really a fitness person (yet) and feeling nervous about trying new moves in front of other people keeps you away from the gym. The free version will save unlimited workouts, but you can only add three custom routines. For everything else, its $4.99 per month or $29.99 per year. The best app for prioritizing family and friend time: CoziIf you want to spend more time with your loved ones, try Cozi, a simple organizer that gives you a clear visual representation of your whole familys schedule. Not only can you see when everyone is free, but you can see how much time you devote (or dont devote) to the people with whom you share the appwhich can motivate you to schedule more time together. Its also free, which is a plus. Use the money you saved to pay for a nice night out with the people you set a resolution to spend more time with. The best app to quit smoking (or any habit): Days SinceA lot of people appear to be interested in quitting smoking this year, but whether you want to do that, quit vaping, stop drinking, or disengage with another habit you don't think benefits you anymore, you should try Days Since. It's a very simple app that does nothing more than track the days since you last did the thing you don't want to do anymorewhich is really valuable for New Year's resolutions, since they're all about creating better habits in the new year. Start on January 1 or, honestly, whenever, and watch the color you assign to your bad habit grow into a visual streak through the app. After a while, you'll really be able to see how much progress you've made and you won't want to break the streak. The nice thing about this app, too, is that you can reset a streak at any time, so even reverting to a bad habit can become a positive, as you can always start right back over. You can even add a note to any restarted streak so you can look back and see what happened, learn from it, and grow your streak longer the next time. Finally, while all of that is free, you can set notifications to ping your phone and remind you how far you've come, keeping you motivated throughout 2025, for an annual price of $17.99. The best bill-tracking app: Rocket MoneySpending less on living expenses gives you more to spend on the fun stuff, which is a worthy resolution. To do it, try Rocket Money, which helps you budget, but also offers services like bill negotiation and income analysis, so you can see where youre spending your money every monthand get rid of recurring fees you dont actually need to be paying. Some of it is free, but if you want to create unlimited budgets, get credit reports, and access the all-important cancellation concierge (which not only identifies your recurring payments, but cancels them for you and even tries to get you fee refunds), youll have to pay. The app offers a sliding payment scale, so youll pay between $4 and $12 per month, depending on whether you want to pay monthly or annually. The best app to spend less time on social media: One SecIt might seem counterintuitive to download another app when youre trying to stay off the apps in the first place, but One Sec really might be the answer. All it does is cause a 10-second delay between when you tap a specific app, like Instagram, and when the app actually opens. It encourages you to take a deep breath, then tells you how many times youve attempted to open that app in the last 24 hoursand determine if you want to proceed. There are other apps out there that straight-up lock you out of your socials, but that removes the accountability from your resolution and cuts you off in a way that will be jarring and hard to stick with. Something low-stakes that doesnt penalize you for being human and daring to open Facebook is much nicer. Its free if youre trying to reduce your use of one particular app, but to tackle them all, youll need to upgrade to a pro version for $19.99 per year or $2.99 per month. The best app for reducing stress at work: MoodfitThere are lots of mindfulness and deep breathing apps out there, but those arent great for seeing any progress, which is what resolutions are all about. Moodfit, on the other hand, gives you not only tools for managing your mood, but insights into your various mood-based patterns. You can track your mood, gratitude, mindfulness, and breathing while seeing your progress in numbers and on a chart. You can even track nutrition, sleep, and medications to see how those play a role in your mood, too. Seeing it all laid out will help you home in on what besides work is affecting you, but also see exactly when and how during work youre getting upset, then make the effort to adjust when necessary to reduce stress. A basic version is free, but its $8.99 to access all the features, including personalized reports and unlimited goals.0 Comments 0 Shares 28 Views

WWW.ENGADGET.COMThe FTCs Microsoft antitrust probe reportedly focuses on software bundlingThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is reportedly investigating Microsoft like its 1998. In the waning days of the Biden administration, outgoing chair Lina Khans probe is said to be picking up steam, according to ProPublica. The FTC is particularly concerned with Microsofts bundling of ubiquitous Office products with cybersecurity and cloud computing services. That includes a deal to upgrade government bundles for a limited time, which essentially had the effect of using a government cybersecurity crisis to sell more licenses. It adds more detail to reports from Bloomberg and the Financial Times in November about an FTC probe into the Windows maker. The publications said Microsofts competitors complained that its bundling of its popular software with cloud services made it harder to compete. ProPublica says FTC attorneys have recently interviewed and scheduled meetings with Microsofts competitors.Microsoft confirmed to ProPublica that the FTC issued a civil investigative demand (essentially a subpoena), forcing the company to hand over information related to the case. A Microsoft spokesperson told the publication without providing on-the-record examples that the FTC document is broad, wide ranging, and requests things that are out of the realm of possibility to even be logical. The investigation follows a separate ProPublica report from November about how Microsoft appeared to exploit a series of cyberattacks to sell more licenses to the US government. Following a meeting with President Biden in the summer of 2021, the company was said to have offered to upgrade the governments existing bundles (including Windows and its Office suite) to a more expensive version that added its advanced cybersecurity products. Microsoft also sent consultants to install the upgrades and train employees to use them. Many divisions of the US government accepted including all of the Defense Departments military services and then began paying for the more expensive bundles after the trial ended. (The hassle of switching to a different cybersecurity product after the trial ended practically guaranteed that would be the case.) ProPublicas account essentially paints Microsoft as exploiting a cybersecurity crisis to expand sales and pad its bottom line. Just late-stage capitalism things, yall.MicrosoftIronically, the sales tactic resulted from security lapses from you guessed it Microsoft. Bidens request from Big Tech leaders to boost government cybersecurity followed the SolarWinds attack that exploited a vulnerability in a Microsoft identity service. The company reportedly knew the app contained a security nightmare that let hackers spoof legitimate employees and probe sensitive information without raising suspicion. But patching the flaw would add friction to government logins when the company was competing for US contracts. Microsoft reportedly opted to stay mum instead of risk losing business.According to experts who spoke to ProPublica, the government trial sales scheme could have violated regulations on contracting and competition. The publication reported that even Microsofts attorneys worried the deal would spark antitrust concerns. If this sounds familiar, it echoes the governments 1998 antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft. Bundling was also a star of that show, with the FTC accusing the company of engaging in anticompetitive practices by including Internet Explorer with Windows, a move viewed in those early days of the internet as stifling rivals like Netscape. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/big-tech/the-ftcs-microsoft-antitrust-probe-reportedly-focuses-on-software-bundling-193545163.html?src=rss0 Comments 0 Shares 28 Views

Microsoft's game streaming services has been experiencing issues since Thursday and is still not totally back online 24 hours later.Users on r/xcloud, the subreddit devoted to Xbox Cloud Gaming, have reported unusually long wait times to get a game to load, stretching a process that's supposed to be instantaneous into a 50 minute or longer wait. WWW.ENGADGET.COMApple just dropped the first eight minutes of Severance season twoThe second season of the smash hit sci-fi drama Severance finally premieres on January 17. However, Apple just threw us a bone by dropping the first eight minutes of the season. Its been nearly three years since season one completed its run, so this is a nice little holiday gift. You can find the exclusive preview on the Apple TV+ app under the Bonus Content section of the Severance page. There will be no spoilers here, but the snippet does get into the fallout of the events of season one and may even touch on that surprising cliffhanger. For the uninitiated, Severance is a sci-fi take on work/life balance in which certain employees at a shadowy corporation sever their work selves from their regular selves. This results in a harrowing, and occasionally hilarious, treatise about human identity and the lengths our corporate overlords will go to make a buck. Its very good. Best of all? Newbies wont have to wait three full years to watch season two.Apple TV+ also just posted a bunch of images to social media that heavily imply its planning on a free weekend of sorts for non-subscribers, scheduled for January 4 and 5. The images are all tagged with slogans like see for yourself and save the date.Stay tuned. pic.twitter.com/ph7k2Wh75G Apple TV (@AppleTV) December 26, 2024 If true, this would be a mighty fine way to check out Apples impressive slate of sci-fi originals without ponying up for a subscription. The streamer has become the de facto home of sci-fi in recent years, airing standout programs like Severance, Silo, Foundation and For All Mankind, among many others. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/entertainment/tv-movies/apple-just-dropped-the-first-eight-minutes-of-severance-season-two-181627223.html?src=rss0 Comments 0 Shares 27 Views
