THEHACKERNEWS.COMIranian and Russian Entities Sanctioned for Election Interference Using AI and Cyber TacticsJan 01, 2025Ravie LakshmananGenerative AI / Election InterferenceThe U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Tuesday leveled sanctions against two entities in Iran and Russia for their attempts to interfere with the November 2024 presidential election. The federal agency said the entities a subordinate organization of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and a Moscow-based affiliate of Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) sought to influence the electoral outcome and divide the American people through targeted disinformation campaigns."As affiliates of the IRGC and GRU, these actors aimed to stoke socio-political tensions and influence the U.S. electorate during the 2024 U.S. election," it noted in a press release. In August 2024, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) jointly accused Iran of attempting to undermine democratic processes, including by orchestrating cyber operations designed to gain access to sensitive information related to the elections.Around the same time, Meta revealed that it blocked WhatsApp accounts used by Iranian threat actors to target individuals in Israel, Palestine, Iran, the U.K., and the U.S. The campaign was attributed to an IRGC-affiliated hacking crew codenamed Charming Kitten.A month later, U.S. federal prosecutors unsealed criminal charges against three Iranian nationals allegedly employed with the IRGC for targeting current and former government personnel to siphon sensitive data.In tandem, the Treasury Department also sanctioned seven individuals for conducting spear-phishing, hack-and-leak operations, as well as interfering with political campaigns in 2020 and 2024.The latest Iranian entity to fall under the purview of U.S. sanctions is the Cognitive Design Production Center (CDPC), a subsidiary of the IRGC that's said to have planned influence operations designed to incite socio-political tensions in the lead up to the 2024 elections. Also sanctioned by OFAC is a Moscow-based entity called the Center for Geopolitical Expertise (CGE), which works directly with a GRU unit responsible for sabotage, political interference operations, and cyber warfare aimed at the West.It was founded in late December 2020 as a non-profit by Aleksandr Dugin, who was previously sanctioned by the U.S. in March 2015 for being "complicit in actions or policies that threaten the peace, security, stability, or sovereignty or territorial integrity of Ukraine."CGE, per the Treasury Department, "directs and subsidizes the creation and publication of deepfakes and circulated disinformation," using generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools to create synthetic content at scale and distribute them across bogus websites masquerading as legitimate news outlets."CGE built a server that hosts the generative AI tools and associated AI-created content, in order to avoid foreign web-hosting services that would block their activity," the agency said."The GRU provided CGE and a network of U.S.-based facilitators with financial support to: build and maintain its AI-support server; maintain a network of at least 100 websites used in its disinformation operations; and contribute to the rent cost of the apartment where the server is housed."Valery Mikhaylovich Korovin, a GRU officer, is alleged to have carried out these clandestine influence operations targeting the U.S. elections since at least 2024, coordinating financial support from the GRU to his employees and U.S.-based facilitators."The Government of the Russian Federation employs an array of tools, including covert foreign malign influence campaigns and illicit cyber activities, to undermine the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States and its allies and partners globally," the Treasury said."The Kremlin has increasingly adapted its efforts to hide its involvement by developing a vast ecosystem of Russian proxy websites, fake online personas, and front organizations that give the false appearance of being independent news sources unconnected to the Russian state."Found this article interesting? WWW.TECHNOLOGYREVIEW.COMThe Vera C. Rubin Observatory is ready to transform our understanding of the cosmosHigh atop Chiles 2,700-meter Cerro Pachn, the air is clear and dry, leaving few clouds to block the beautiful view of the stars. Its here that the Vera C. Rubin Observatory will soon use a car-size 3,200-megapixel digital camerathe largest ever builtto produce a new map of the entire night sky every three days. Generating 20 terabytes of data per night, Rubin will capture fine details about the solar system, the Milky Way, and the large-scale structure of the cosmos, helping researchers to understand their history and current evolution. It will capture rapidly changing events, including stellar explosions called supernovas, the evisceration of stars by black holes, and the whiz of asteroids overhead. Findings from the observatory will help tease apart fundamental mysteries like the nature of dark matter and dark energy, two phenomena that have not been directly observed but affect how objects in the universe are bound togetherand pushed apart. Rubin is the latest and most advanced entrant into the illustrious lineage of all-sky surveyorsinstruments that capture, or survey, the entire sky, over and over again. Its first scientific images are expected later this year. In a single exposure, Rubin will capture 100,000 galaxies, the majority invisible to other instruments. A quarter-century in the making, the observatory is poised to expand our understanding of just about every corner of the universe. The facility will also look far outside the Milky Way, cataloguing around 20 billion previously unknown galaxies and mapping their placement in long filamentary structures known as the cosmic web. I cant think of an astronomer who is not excited about [Rubin], says Christian Aganze, a galactic archeologist at Stanford University in California. The observatory was first proposed in 2001. Then called the Large-Aperture Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), it grew out of an earlier concept for an instrument that would study dark matter, the enigmatic substance making up 85% of the matter in the universe. LSST was later reenvisioned to focus on a broader set of scientific questions, cataloguing the night sky over the course of a decade. Five years ago, it was renamed in honor of the late American astronomer Vera Rubin, who uncovered some of the best evidence in favor of dark matters existence in the 1970s and 80s. During operations, Rubin will point its sharp eyes at the heavens and take a 30-second exposure of an area larger than 40 full moons. It will then swivel to a new patch and snap another photo, rounding back to the same swath of sky after about three nights. In this way, it can provide a constantly updated view of the universe, essentially creating this huge video of the southern sky for 10 years, explains Anais Mller, an astrophysicist at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. A view of the back of the Rubin Observatorys massive LSST camera, which boasts six filters designed to capture light from different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.SPENCER LOWELL 1) Secondary mirror (M2); 2) Lenses; 3) Primary Mirror (M1); 4) Tertiary mirror (M3)GREG STEWART/SLAC NATIONAL ACCELERATOR LABORATORY/NSF/DOE/RUBIN OBSERVATORY/AURA To accomplish its work, Rubin relies on an innovative three-mirror design unlike that of any other telescope. Its primary mirror is actually made up of two separate surfaces with different curvatures. The outer section, 8.4 meters wide, captures light from the universe and reflects it onto a 3.4-meter-wide secondary mirror located above it. This bounces the light back onto the inner part of the primary, which stretches five meters across and is considered a tertiary mirror, before being reflected into a digital camera. The compact configuration allows the enormous instrument to be powerful but nimble as it shifts around to take roughly 1,000 photos per night. It has five seconds to go to the next position and be ready, says Sandrine Thomas, the deputy director for the observatorys construction and project scientist for the telescope. Meaning that it doesnt move. It doesnt vibrate. Its just rock solid, ready to take the next image. Technicians reinstall a cover on the secondary telescope mirror, to protect it before installation.SPENCER LOWELL The observatorys three mirrors and the housing of the LSST camera are mounted on a structure called the Telescope Mount Assembly. The assembly has been carefully engineered for stability and precision, allowing the observatory to track celestial objects and carry out its large-scale survey of the sky.SPENCER LOWELL The primary and tertiary telescope mirrors are positioned below a chamber at the Rubin Observatory that is used to apply reflective coatings.SPENCER LOWELL A view of the Telescope Mount Assembly from above, through the observatorys protective dome shutter.SPENCER LOWELL Rubins 3,000-kilogram camera is the most sensitive ever created for an astronomical project. By stacking together images of a piece of sky taken over multiple nights, the telescope will be able to spot fainter and fainter objects, peering deeper into the cosmos the longer it operates. Each exposure creates a flood of data, which has to be piped via fiber-optic cables to processing centers around the world. These use machine learning to filter the information and generate alerts for interested groups, says Mller, who helps run what are known as community brokers, groups that design software to ingest the nightly terabytes of data and search for interesting phenomena. A small change in the skyof which Rubin is expected to see around 10 million per nightcould point to a supernova explosion, a pair of merging stars, or a massive object passing in front of another. Different teams will want to know which is which so they can aim other telescopes at particular regions for follow-up studies. The focal plane of the LSST has a surface area large enough to capture a portion of the sky about the size of 40 full Moons. Its resolution is so high that you could spot a golf ball from 24 km (15 miles) away.VERA C RUBIN OBSERVATORY Matter in the universe can warp and magnify the light from more distant objects. The Rubin Observatory will use this phenomenon, called gravitational lensing, to study dark matter an as-yet-unidentified substance that makes up most of the universes matter.ESA, NASA, K. SHARON/TEL AVIV UNIVERSITY AND E. OFEK/CALTECH With its capacity to detect faint objects, Rubin is expected to increase the number of known asteroids and comets by a factor of 10 to 100. Many of them will be objects more than 140 meters in diameter with orbits passing near Earths, meaning they could threaten our world. And it will catalogue 40,000 new small icy bodies in the Kuiper Belt, a largely unexplored region beyond Neptune where many comets are born, helping scientists better understand the structure and history of our solar system. We have never had such a big telescope imaging so wide and so deep. Anais Mller, astrophysicist, Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia Beyond our solar system, Rubin will see telltale flickers that signal exoplanets passing in front of their parent stars, causing them to briefly dim. It should also find thousands of new brown dwarfs, faint objects between planets and stars in size, whose positions in the Milky Way can provide insight into how the environments in which stars are born affect the size and type of objects that can form there. It will discover never-before-seen dim dwarf galaxies orbiting our own and look closely at stellar streams, remnant trails of stars left behind when the Milky Way tore other, similar galaxies apart. The facility will also look far outside the Milky Way, cataloguing around 20 billion previously unknown galaxies and mapping their placement in long filamentary structures known as the cosmic web. The gravitational pull of dark matter directly affects the overall shape of this web, and by examining its structure, cosmologists will glean evidence for different theories of what dark matter is. Rubin is expected to observe millions of supernovas and determine their distance from us, a way of measuring how fast the universe is expanding. Some researchers suspect that dark energywhich is causing the cosmos to expand at an accelerated ratemay have been stronger in the past. Data from more distant, and therefore older, supernovas could help bolster or disprove such ideas and potentially narrow down the identity of dark energy too. An overhead view of the observatory.SPENCER LOWELL In just about every way, Rubin will be a monumental project, explaining the near-universal eagerness for those in the field to see it finally begin operations. We have never had such a big telescope imaging so wide and so deep, says Mller. Thats an incredible opportunity to really pinpoint things that are changing in the sky and understand their physics. WWW.CNET.COMSea Moss Gummies: Side Effects, Benefits and Who Should Try ThemIf you're familiar with the latest wellness trends, and also enjoy taking your vitamins and minerals in gummy form, you've probably heard about the sea moss gummies trend. Even celebrities like Bella Hadid are hopping on the trend -- the model drinks sea moss gel every morning.Created using sea moss, a type of seaweed that grows off the coasts of Europe, the United Kingdom and North America, these gummies can contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and polyunsaturated fats. But are sea moss gummies actually worth adding to your wellness routine? Let's look at the benefits and risks. What are sea moss gummies? Upgrade your inbox Get cnet insider From talking fridges to iPhones, our experts are here to help make the world a little less complicated. How sea moss gummies are made can vary between recipes, but they generally have many similarities, starting with their main ingredient: yes, it's sea moss. It's common to see these gummies made with sweeteners, added flavoring, fruit juice concentrates, glycerol, pectin and processed seaweed. However, simple versions with more minimalistic ingredients can also be found. Those who are adventurous in the kitchen can even purchase sea moss gel to make gummies at home. When sea moss gummies are made, the moss is first processed into a gel, then heated and mixed with juice and a binding agent like agar agar or glycerol. At this stage, sweeteners, added vitamins and other ingredients are whisked into the mix. Once thoroughly incorporated, the contents are poured into a gummy mold and refrigerated. The initial gel is made by soaking sea moss in clean water for up to two days before blending and then refrigerating it until it thickens into a gel substance. ablokhin/Getty ImagesHow do sea moss gummies work? The human body uses 102 different minerals and nutrients to sustain itself. Sea moss gummies contain 92 of these 102, according to brands likeWixar Naturals,Dr. T's Naturals and SVNNA. That high concentration of bodily nutrient needs is a big part of why seaweed is considered a superfood. The bioavailability of sea moss gummies and their health benefits are still being researched, but they contain many highly bioavailable components. The bioavailability of a food is how easy it is for your body to break down that food and retrieve essential nutrients from it. The more bioavailable something is, the easier it is for your body to digest and absorb it.There are some potential positive overall health effects, but there are also some risks to be aware of. For the positive, research may indicate that sea moss gummies could help alleviate arthritis, diabetes, autoimmune difficulties and ocular and cardiovascular diseases. One of the most significant risks to be aware of is the high levels of iodine in seaweed. If you use sea moss gummies, keeping track of the recommended dosages and not exceeding your daily recommended iodine intake is essential. Those with thyroid disorders, those breastfeeding and those who are pregnant have to be especially cautious.Potential sea moss gummies' benefitsSea moss gummies have a plethora of potential health benefits. The following list attempts to capture as many of these benefits as possible, but there still may be more uncovered through ongoing research. It is also important to note that while Irish sea moss is known to contain all of these beneficial nutrients, there is not enough research available to say that the supplement and gummy forms of Irish sea moss (which are processed) have the same nutritional and antimicrobial properties as the Irish sea moss itself. Rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidantsThe type of seaweed used in sea moss gummies contains 92 of the 102 minerals and nutrients the human body needs. This food is also heavy in antioxidants, providing several general health benefits to the immune system, eye health, brain function and more.Potential immune-boosting propertiesSea moss contains many aspects that can indirectly aid the immune system. The antioxidants, as mentioned above, are part of this. This algae also contains prebiotics and is heavy in fiber, which can work together to improve gut health, thereby promoting a healthier immune system. Sea moss also has several minerals and nutrients that can help with immune system functionality.Support for digestionSea moss gummies may aid with digestion due to their high concentrations of fiber and prebiotics, which can both work to improve gut health and functionality.Contribution to skin care and hair health Veronique Beranger/Getty ImagesSea moss contains many components that can aid with the health and beauty of skin, hair and nails. Many of these components work together to assist the body's production of collagen, which plays a significant role in the health and appearance of our skin, hair and nails. Beyond the vitamins and minerals, this superfood also contains omega-3 fatty acids, which can help with skin health, hair strength and nail durability.May lower your risk for cancerSome research has shown positive benefits from utilizing sea moss extracts to combat cancer cells in mice. These studies are pursuing the possibility of using seaweed to create anti-cancer agents. More research may be needed, but scientists have found promise in the possibility of using anti-cancer agents from seaweed to help in the treatment of colon and breast cancer.Sea moss gummies' risks While there are many potential health benefits to consider, there are also some risks and potential side effects to be aware of.Potential interactions with medicationIf you are on medications, it's always wise to speak with your prescribing physician before adding any other health supplements, prescriptions or medicines to your health routine. Sea moss is known to interfere with some thyroid regulation medications. If you are taking medicine for your thyroid, speak with your physician before considering sea moss gummies.Allergic reactions in some individualsHumans can have and develop food allergies to just about any food. Before trying a new type of food, it's a good idea to test your response to it. If you're uncertain about your food allergies, speak with an allergy specialist first. monstArrr_/Getty ImagesOverconsumption risksBecause sea moss contains high levels of iodine and heavy metals, overconsumption of this superfood can lead to health risks. If using sea moss gummies, make sure not to exceed the recommended daily dosages and be aware of how much iodine and heavy metals you consume from other sources.Contamination issues in low-quality productsA product is only as good as its source materials and its production. Lower-quality products can run the risk of contaminants mixing with the ingredients at different stages of production. Also note that because sea moss isn't regulated by the FDA in raw or supplement form, it isn't possible to know the quality of what you're purchasing.Lack of informationThere is not a lot of information about sea moss out there. Also, most studies on sea moss have been conducted on animals, not on people. More research is needed. Potential sea moss gummies' side effectsWhile sea moss gummies are a superfood and possess many potential health benefits, they can also have unwanted side effects in some situations:Iodine toxicity: High levels of iodine in seaweed can lead to a toxic buildup in the body if you overconsume sea moss gummies.Heavy metal toxicity: High levels of heavy metals in seaweed can lead to a toxic buildup in the body if you overconsume sea moss gummies.Digestive difficulties: Some individuals have a strong gut reaction that can result in diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain and vomiting.Gut inflammation: Because seaweed is heavy in carrageenan, these supplements can result in intestinal inflammation and bloating in some people.Who are sea moss gummies best for?Individuals looking to improve their overall health and wellnessBecause this superfood is so loaded with nutritional benefits and potential health effects, it may be helpful to those looking for all-around general health and wellness boosts. Remember, though, that it's always best to speak with a medical professional before attempting to treat any illness and that health supplements are not a replacement for medical treatments or expertise. Those seeking to boost their nutrient intake naturallySea moss gummies provide great nutritional value even without their other potential health benefits. These supplements may be a good choice for those interested in increasing their nutrient intake through natural sources.Vegans and vegetarians looking for plant-based supplementsSea moss gummies are primarily made from vegan-friendly ingredients and may provide a good source of vitamins and nutrients for vegans and vegetarians looking for plant-based supplements.Who should avoid sea moss gummies?People on specific medications that may interact with sea moss monstArrr_/Getty ImagesBefore adding a supplement to your routine, always consult your prescriber if you're on medications. Sea moss gummies are known to interact negatively with some thyroid medications, but such bad reactions may not be limited just to these medications.Pregnant or breastfeeding women (unless approved by a health care provider)In general, it's strongly recommended that women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid consuming sea moss gummies because of their iodine contents. Your health care provider may clear you in such circumstances, but you should always speak with them first to avoid endangering your health or the health of your unborn child.0 Comments 0 Shares 20 Views

WWW.CNET.COMWatchOS 11.2 Adds Surprising Health Features to Your Apple Watch. Download It NowWith Apple Intelligence for the iPhone getting all the attention, it's easy to overlook all the new features and tools that are available for your Apple Watch in WatchOS 11. Most of the updates come in the form of new health, fitness and safety tracking tools. There's a new sleep apnea notifications feature, which can indicate signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea when you wear the Apple Watch Series 10, Series 9 or Ultra 2 to sleep. There's also a new Vitals app and you can finally pause your activity rings.WatchOS 11 is compatible with any Apple Watch from the Series 6 and later, and the second-gen SE. To try outWatchOS 11.2, you need to haveiOS 18on your iPhone paired to the Apple Watch. To start the installation process, go to Watch > General > Software Update. Once you've installed the update, these are our favorite features that you should explore. Watch this: What's New in WatchOS 11 05:53 Sleep apnea notificationsTheApple Watch Series 9,Ultra 2andSeries 10can check for signs of potentialsleep apnea, a potentially serious condition where you stop breathing throughout the night. It's estimated that1 billion peoplearound the world may have the condition.Using the accelerometer, the Apple Watch tracks a new metric called breathing disturbances by monitoring for small movements at your wrist. You'll be able to see this metric in the Health app after each night of sleep, listed either as elevated or not elevated. A notification will be sent if the watch notices consistent signs of sleep apnea. The feature has received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration in the US, and will also be available in over 150 countries. The Apple Watch Series 10 can detect signs of sleep apnea. Lisa Eadicicco/CNETCamera Remote controlsOne of the sleeper apps on the Apple Watch is the Camera Remote which lets you control your iPhone's cameras. A new addition that Apple added in WatchOS 11.2 is the ability to pause video recordings. iOS 18 brought the ability to pause and unpause video recordings on your iPhone, but it's nice to see the feature added to the Apple Watch now, too.Change your Activity RingsIn WatchOS 11 you can finally adjust your activity rings and take a rest day if you're sick. In the Activity app, tap on the three rings and then tap pause rings. You can pause for the day, week or month, or you can set a custom target.Another great new option is being able to change your goals for each ring: Move, exercise and stand. If you know that a 30-minute exercise goal isn't right for you, that can be adjusted up or down. Adjusting your Move ring in WatchOS 11. Celso Bulgatti/CNETIndividual days of the week can also be adjusted. Go to the calendar icon at the top right then press schedule and adjust accordingly. I know my Tuesdays are usually pretty low on workouts as I'm in the office, so I set that target to be lower, then up my weekend goals as I'm out and about a lot more. The Vitals app tracks your health overnightWhen you wear the Apple Watch to track sleep, it's also recording other key metrics like heart rate, respiratory rate and wrist temperature. The Vitals app surfaces these metrics in the morning so you can see them on your wrist, rather than pulling out the Health app to dig into the menus. Use the screen or the crown to scroll through the metrics. One helpful view is the past seven days view, which tells you if any of your vitals fall outside of your range of normal and highlights it in pink. You'll also get notification on your wrist if two or more vitals are off. The Vitals app. Celso Bulgatti/CNETTraining Load helps you keep an eye on your workoutsTraining Load is a way to measure the intensity of your workout routine, so you can keep on track if you're working towards a marathon or the like, or want to avoid over-training.Open the Activity app and find a new icon in the top right. Tap the chart symbol and the white line shows your 28-day weighted average of activity, with your past seven days compared against it. You can scroll the digital crown to go back through your last week's workouts. They'll be categorized as anything from "well above" to "well below" your average and each gets an effort rating. The Training Load screen in the Activity app. Celso Bulgatti/CNETCompatible cardio workouts like walks, runs, hikes and rowing will get an effort rating out of 10. The Apple Watch calculates this based on data like height, weight and age, plus calorimetry data from your workout like GPS and heart rate. You can adjust this effort rating if you think it doesn't really reflect your workout. Say you're overly tired from a late night and pushed to do a run, but it was slower than usual, you can change the effort rating to more accurately reflect how you felt. Tap the effort rating to bring up a chart and turn the crown to move the rating.A nice perk if you have an Apple Watch Ultra or Ultra 2 is that you can see your vitals and training load data on the Modular Ultra face by customizing the side bezel complication.Check in with your Apple Watch for safetyThere's a new safety tool on the Apple Watch called Check In with WatchOS 11. It works both from the Workout app, and from the Messages app. Similar to how Check In functions in iOS 17, you open the Messages app and choose the plus icon to find Check In. Here you can adjust it to "check in" with a friend or family member based on a period of time, or when you arrive at a set destination.During a workout, swipe right and tap Check In. It will automatically text your selected contact when you finish your workout. If the Apple Watch notices you're not progressing as expected; your speed increases dramatically; or if your heart rate goes down close to your resting during an intense workout, it will prompt you to respond.Otherwise it will share your location, with either limited or full data based on your selection, with your contact. A Live Activity appears at the top of the Smart Stack. Celso Bulgatti/CNETOnce you start a Check In, this also starts a Live Activity on the watch that shows up in the Smart Stack. Like on iOS 17, Check In only works if your recipient is also running iOS 17 or later and it will not work for other contacts who aren't using iMessage. The redesigned Photos watch faceWatchOS 11 doesn't have any new watch faces per se, but the Photos face gets more functionality. Pull out your iPhone and go into the Watch app, where you can choose people, pets, nature or city photos to highlight on your wrist. In the background, your phone rates the best photos on composition and facial expressions to highlight what it thinks are the top images to show on your watch face. You can even go one step further and change the size and font of the time, plus background colors on your images to make the watch face more personal.Remote app gets even more toolsI use the remote app on the Apple Watch more than I care to admit and it has even more controls in WatchOS 11. Open the Remote app then tap the three dots at the top right. Here you can mute and unmute your connected Apple TV, turn on captions or even power off your connected device with one tap. The Translate app in WatchOS 11. Celso Bulgatti/CNETTranslate appThe translate app is now on the Apple Watch. Just speak your phrase and choose the target language, then the Apple Watch plays back the translation. In the settings you can change the speed to make playback slower or faster. Plus, you can download 20 different language packs so it will work even if you don't have the paired iPhone with you.A few of my other favorite features of WatchOS 11 include:Extra tools to help track pregnancy in the Health app.Live Activities now appear in the Smart Stack, like if you call a car or snooze an alarm.Offline mapping in Apple Maps now lets you get turn-by-turn navigation for hikes with voice guidance.iMessage tapbacks have a different look, which is a nice subtle change.Tides app to keep track of water conditions.Double Tap now lets you navigate through any app -- messages, weather or basically anything else -- in two pinches.Since you need to download iOS 18 to try out WatchOS 11, you might as well explore some of its new features, too. Check out our iOS 18 cheat sheet for features to try.0 Comments 0 Shares 20 Views

WWW.EUROGAMER.NETIndiana Jones and the Great Circle is Eurogamer's Game of 2024Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is Eurogamer's Game of 2024Worldly.Image credit: Microsoft Feature by Katharine Castle Managing Editor Published on Jan. 1, 2025 It's rare that a game released in the last gasp of December manages to not just make a lasting impression on almost a dozen-odd members of staff, but a big enough one to almost instantly supplant the last dozen months' worth of equally excellent video games they've all been playing. But that's precisely what Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has done to the Eurogamer team over these last few weeks, stealing in with hushed footsteps to lift this year's most coveted prize before any of us really knew it was happening. It's a testament to the strength of what MachineGames has managed to achieve here with its globetrotting romp about a mysterious and ancient legend circling the planet, as well as its deep commitment to letting players create their own improvised fun within it. It's also a lesson in how we as critics should always encompass the full scope of what any given year has to offer us, as to ignore such a brilliant, shining gem of a game just because it falls at an awkward time of year is simply a disservice to you, our readers. This spirit of play and unbridled adventure is also what defines Eurogamer's second game of 2024, Team Asobi's joyous Astro Bot. It was quite a close-run race between these two games this year, and both stood head and shoulders above almost everything else when it came down to the final vote.Eurogamer rounds up 2024's best video games.Watch on YouTubeIn some respects, these two games sit at almost opposite ends of the spectrum - one is a PlayStation family mascot platformer that rattles through 30 years of gaming history with delightful exuberance, while the other is a boisterous Xbox blockbuster that meshes breezy and spontaneous stealth systems with whip smart puzzles and brawny melee action. But I think they both speak to the same, underlying yearning we all feel - that we're tired of being spoon-fed the same bland AAA fare year after year, and that what we really want is to poke, twist, prod and really get beneath the skin of what makes these games tick. We want to be challenged, to engage with what's in front of us, and we want to feel thrilled and elated by it all as well. That's not to say we're actively shying away from some of the darker aspects that also make games great. The sheer number of horror games on this year's list is ample proof of that. Indeed, these, too, can be sumptuous interactive feasts that make our brains light up in all the same ways that games like Astro Bot and Indiana Jones do. But I think it's that particular mix of player-authored chaos and creativity that The Great Circle taps into that's made it such a deserving champion of this year's picks. The invitation to reach out and pick up a broomstick, a hammer, a mandolin, a violin bow, and then grasp and hold it in Indy's hand with such poise, and such devious confidence, that you don't even need to think twice about where that object's going to end up in the next five seconds. It's going to crumple and splinter the temple of the nearest Nazi guard, buckle them at the knees, and knock them out cold. Such is the fate of every object that passes through Indy's fingers, because it's too goddamn delicious not to (well, apart from the copious biscotti loaves, bananas and prickly pears you'll also find lying about - those are going straight into Indy's gob to give his health and stamina bars a second wind of endurance). Image credit: Digital FoundryBut even though the outcome of all these myriad objects might be set in stone, The Great Circle still thrums with the unexpected. Your plan of attack might get thwarted by a hidden guard you didn't clock on your approach, say, your silent takedown suddenly erupting into a frantic chase of thrown bottles, grabbed trowels, and chaotic, panicky punches. Or you might come across a little brain-teasing puzzle that acts as a pleasing diversion for a few minutes, encouraging you to take five to solve a proposed board game conundrum, or crack a locked safe where skill books, cash and other tasty treats lurk within. Or perhaps you simply want to pause a moment to spend a little more time with its superb cast of characters, from your spirited companion Gina, right down to the Sukhothai village chief and his cat Fried Egg.Or maybe you'll stumble across an entirely different rabbit hole on your way through its densely plotted locations that forms one of The Great Circle's many outstanding sidequests, many of which are so substantial, not to mention almost integral to what's going on in the wider story, that you'll want to seek them out regardless. Often sequestered away from the rest of The Great Circle's story missions, they take you to all sorts of different places on its various maps that you might not have explored otherwise, their tailored plotlines and environments bringing a unique flavour to each and every one of them. Some tap into stealth-driven rescue missions, while others lean into Indy's penchant for tomb raiding. There's even one that feels like an homage to PT - a truly spectacular sequence that I won't spoil any further, but which is just sitting there, off the beaten path, ready to delight those who happen to come across it.I didn't come across it at first - it was only after going back to mop up the stuff I'd inevitably had to leave behind in order to finish our review on time that I eventually discovered this little side story. And it really feels all the more special for having missed it the first time. A heavier handed blockbuster would have taken great pains to make sure I saw and experienced every last hyper realistic morsel of it in a single-player game like this (looking at you, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and your stupendous ode to maximalist excess), and with the threat of rising development costs and the pressure of making sure players get their pound of flesh in exchange for their 70 British pounds, it's understandable why games leave so few stones unturned these days. Image credit: Eurogamer/Bethesda SoftworksBut how much more exciting it is to discover these gems for ourselves - to unravel new wrinkles in Indy's story without them being handed to us on a plate, and all virtual fingers pointing 'Go here! Please! I promise it will be good!' How much more thrilling to be able to have that secret handshake with the developer, in a moment that feels truly your own. This is what the best games of recent years have always done for us - the Outer Wilds, the Elden Rings, the Unpackings, the Cocoons. All of them put the player at their heart, presenting us with rich and vibrant worlds to simply go away and tinker with at our own pace, peeling back its layers, and fully submerging ourselves in everything these games have to offer us. They let us play, uninhibited, within their respective sandpits, and they remind us of what's possible in games, and how, even after all these years playing them, that they still have the capacity to surprise and delight us - whether we're stepping into the shoes of a well-known film star, or a shining, blank canvas little robot.Indiana Jones and the Great Circle does all this and so much more with such confidence that it's the best full stop to the year we could ask for, really. And with any luck, it will also be a bright new beginning for its developer MachineGames as well, a studio that's taken such an assured swing with this new blend of genres that I can't wait to see how it builds on these experiences in the future. Indy is back, and he's never been better.0 Comments 0 Shares 20 Views
