Meta AI Introduces EWE (Explicit Working Memory): A Novel Approach that Enhances Factuality in Long-Form Text Generation by Integrating a Working Memory
Large Language Models (LLMs) have revolutionized text generation capabilities, but they face the critical challenge of hallucination, generating factually incorrect information, particularly in long-form content. Researchers have developed Retrieved-Augmented Generation (RAG) to address this issue, which enhances factual accuracy by incorporating relevant documents from reliable sources into the input prompt. While RAG has shown promise, various iterative prompting methods like FLARE and Self-RAG have emerged to improve accuracy further. However, these approaches remain limited by their reliance on traditional RAG architecture, where retrieved context is the only form of online feedback integrated into the input string.Traditional text generation approaches have evolved through several key methodologies to improve factual accuracy and contextual relevance. The iterative retrieval methods generate responses in segments with each segment utilizing newly retrieved information. ITER-RETGEN exemplifies this approach by using previous outputs to formulate queries for subsequent knowledge retrieval. Adaptive retrieval systems like FLARE and DRAGIN have refined this process by implementing sentence-by-sentence generation with confidence-based verification. Moreover, long-context LLMs have explored memory-based approaches like Memory3, which encode knowledge chunks using KV caches as memories. Other systems like Memorizing Transformers and LongMem have experimented with memory retrieval mechanisms.A team of researchers from Meta FAIR has proposed EWE (Explicit Working Memory), an innovative AI approach that enhances factual accuracy in long-form text generation by implementing a dynamic working memory system. This system uniquely incorporates real-time feedback from external resources and employs online fact-checking mechanisms to refresh its memory continuously. The key innovation lies in its ability to detect and correct false claims during the generation process itself, rather than relying only on pre-retrieved information. Moreover, the effectiveness of EWE has been shown through comprehensive testing on four fact-seeking long-form generation datasets, showing significant improvements in factuality metrics while maintaining response quality. The architecture of EWE represents a versatile framework that can adapt to various configurations while maintaining efficiency. At its core, EWE utilizes a multi-unit memory module that can be dynamically updated during generation. This design allows EWE to operate in different modes from simple RAG when using a single memory unit without stopping, to FLARE-like functionality when implementing sentence-level verification. Unlike similar approaches such as Memory3, EWE doesnt require pre-encoding of all passages and uniquely features dynamic memory updates during the generation process. This flexibility enables parallel processing of different forms of external feedback through distinct memory units. The experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in factual accuracy across multiple datasets. Using the Llama-3.1 70B base model, retrieval augmentation consistently enhances factuality metrics. While competing approaches show mixed results with Nest performing well only on Biography datasets and DRAGIN showing similar performance to basic retrieval augmentation, EWE achieves the highest VeriScore F1 across all datasets. CoVe, despite high precision, produces shorter responses resulting in lower recall performance. EWE maintains comparable performance to the base model with approximately 50% win rates in helpfulness, measured through AlpacaEval. In conclusion, a team from Meta FAIR has introduced EWE (Explicit Working Memory) which represents a significant advancement in addressing the challenge of factual accuracy in long-form text generation. The systems innovative working memory mechanism, which operates through periodic pauses and memory refreshes based on retrieval and fact-checking feedback, demonstrates the potential for more reliable AI-generated content. This research has identified critical success factors including timely memory updates, focused attention mechanisms, and high-quality retrieval data stores, paving the way for future developments in factual text generation systems.Check out the Paper. U.S. Treasury Sanctions Beijing Cybersecurity Firm for State-Backed Hacking Campaigns
Jan 04, 2025Ravie LakshmananCyber Espionage / IoT BotnetThe U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Friday issued sanctions against a Beijing-based cybersecurity company known as Integrity Technology Group, Incorporated for orchestrating several cyber attacks against U.S. victims. These attacks have been publicly attributed to a Chinese state-sponsored threat actor tracked as Flax Typhoon (aka Ethereal Panda or RedJuliett), which was outed last year as operating an Internet of Things (IoT) botnet called Raptor Train. The hacking crew has been active since at least mid-2021, targeting various entities across North America, Europe, Africa, and across Asia. Attacks mounted by Flax Typhoon have typically leveraged known vulnerabilities to gain initial access to victims' computers and then make use of legitimate remote access software to maintain persistent access. The Treasury Department described Chinese malicious cyber actors as one of the "most active and most persistent threats to U.S. national security," repeatedly targeting U.S. government systems, including those associated with the federal agency."The Treasury Department will not hesitate to hold malicious cyber actors and their enablers accountable for their actions," said Acting Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Bradley T. Smith. "The United States will use all available tools to disrupt these threats as we continue working collaboratively to harden public and private sector cyber defenses."Integrity Group, also known as Yongxin Zhicheng, has been accused of providing infrastructure support to Flax Typhoon cyber campaigns between mid-2022 and late-2023, with the U.S. Department of State classifying it as a government contractor with ties to the People's Republic of China (PRC) Ministry of State Security. It was established in September 2010."It provides services to country and municipal State Security and Public Security Bureaus, as well as other PRC cybersecurity government contractors," the State Department noted."'Flax Typhoon' hackers have successfully targeted multiple U.S. and foreign corporations, universities, government agencies, telecommunications providers, and media organizations."Found this article interesting? Donkey Kong Country Returns HD: Release And 10 Things You Should Know
Donkey Kong Country Returns HDCredit: NintendoVideo games arent like movies. Remakes are almost always welcomed. Thats the case with the upcoming Donkey Kong Country Returns HD.The Nintendo classic is set as one of the very first major releases of 2025. Here are 10 things you need to know about the enhanced version of DKCR.Release Date: January 16, 2025Hardcore fans of the original and those who covet major Switch titles have likely been waiting for the New Year with DKCR HD set to release. Were now less than two weeks away.Platforms: Nintendo SwitchThis one is only coming to the Switch. Rarely will you ever see a Mario, Link, or Donkey Kong game on a non-Nintendo platform, though there are some exceptions.Developer: Forever EntertainmentA new studio is developing DKCR HD. The original was developed by Retro Studios. Donkey Kong is by far the largest intellectual property Forever Entertainment has handled. The biggest game FE has been involved with is probably the Panzer Dragoon: Remake, which came out about 30 years ago. Also, FE carried publishing duties for that title. It will be interesting to see how FE handles the game.MORE FOR YOUGameplay: The original on steroids, hopefullyMost consider this to be a remastered version of the original. For the uninitiated, the original is a side-scrolling game where users control Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. I wonder if there has been any thought of altering the latters name, but I digress. The gameplay is still based on running, jumping, overcoming mine cart levels, rocket barrels, etc. Here is a look at some gameplay.Visual Enhancements: Prettier.Dont expect anything that makes you wonder if youve suddenly purchased a machine more powerful than the Switch.DKCR HD isnt going to be a massive visual upgrade, but the lighting will be improved, and some of the character models have been updated.Additional Content: More layers. This version of DKCR HD includes all the levels from the original Wii and 3DS versions of the game. That extension could be enough of a draw for some fans.Modes: More difficulty options. The Switch version will include the mode from the Wii that was viewed as more challenging, but it will also include the simpler 3DS version.Co-op Play: Its in there.Like the original, the remake will support two-player local co-op. One player can control Donkey Kong and the other can control Diddy Kong.Pre-Order Bonuses: There isnt a lot here.In North America, GameStop offers a DK Barrel Pen Holder with pre-orders.Donkey Kong Country Returns HDCredit: NintendoFans are Saying: Its a PacifierThe Switch has yet to deliver an originalDonkey Kong game, and many fans believe this remastered version is being offered to pacify those clamoring for a brand-new DK title.Once it releases, Ill monitor the review scores and sentiments from fans.

Apple Siri Eavesdropping PayoutHeres Whos Eligible And How To Claim
Apple could pay out $20 per device to users affected by alleged Siri spying. Heres who is eligible ... [+] and how to make a claim.SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty ImagesUpdate, Jan. 4, 2025: This story, originally published Jan. 3, now includes more details of who is eligible to claim and instructions on how to disable Siri.Apple users could soon be eligible for a cash payout after the iPhone maker agreed to pay $95 million to settle a class action case including alleged Siri eavesdropping.A preliminary settlement, filed Dec. 13, 2024 in Oakland, California is now awaiting approval by a U.S. district judge, Reuters reports. The lawsuit alleges Apple was infringing privacy by capturing Siri conversations when the voice assistant had been activated accidentally and sharing this information with advertisers. It dates back to 2019, when U.K. newspaper The Guardian reported that Apple employed contractors to listen to Siri recordings of private conversations including medical appointments, sexual encounters and drug deals.Apple got into hot water at the time because although the iPhone maker did say recordings from Siri could be listened to, it did not explicitly state that there was human oversight of the voice assistant. The new Siri lawsuit alleges that Apple didnt inform people they were regularly being recorded without consent. In the latest Siri eavesdropping case, two plaintiffs alleged that they mentioned Air Jordan shoes and their iPhones showed adverts for the product. Another claimed he received medical ads after discussing a specific surgical treatment with his doctor.MORE FOR YOUSo, who could be eligible for a payout once a district judge approves the Siri eavesdropping settlement and what should you do to ensure privacy when using Apples voice assistant?Who Could Be Eligible For The Siri Eavesdropping Payout? Now that the case has been settled and received preliminary approval, its likely Siri users will be able to make a claim. If you owned an Apple Siri-Enabled device after Sept. 17, 2014, you could be eligible to claim. You also need to be based in the U.S. However, to get a share of the fee, youll also need to swear under oath that you experienced Siri activating unintentionally and had privates conversations recorded by the voice assistant.Apple has proposed a decision date of Feb. 14 in the Californian court.A website to confirm this will be set up within 45 days and you then have until May 15, 2025 to file your claim.Apple's iOS 18 adds AI to Siri, which could be a concern.SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty ImagesHow Much Will Apple Pay Siri Users? As it stands, Apple will pay out $20 to Siri users, but the good news is, you can submit a claim for each of the devices you use, up to five devices, or $100 total. The settlement payment could be higher depending on the number of claims submitted and approved.Where Will The Total $95 Million Go?The cash wont all go to Siri Users. Some of the money will go to the legal teams, who could take 30% of the fee plus expenses a total of just under $30m.The money wont make a huge dent in pples profits. The iPhone maker made $93.74 billion in its latest fiscal year.Siri EavesdroppingShould You Quit The Voice Assistant Following The Claims? Its important to note that Apple hasnt admitted any wrongdoing in the Siri eavesdropping case and there is no concrete proof that the iPhone maker passed recordings to advertisers. Data is collected to improve Siri only and this is anonymized and not associated with a particular user, Apple says.Apple said it continues to deny any and all alleged wrongdoing and liability, specifically denies each of the Plaintiffs' contentions and claims, and continues to deny that the Plaintiffs' claims and allegations would be suitable for class action status, according to the filing. The iPhone maker is simply settling the Siri case to avoid costly litigation fees. According to reports, Apple could have been liable to pay $1.5 billion in damages if it lost the case. The Apple Siri case is the latest class action against voice assistant spying. The same law firm is also suing Google in a similar lawsuit.I have asked Apple for further comment and will update this article if the firm responds. How To Disable Siri On An iPad or MacIf you are concerned about privacy, there are several ways you can lock Siri down.On an in iOS device such as iPhone or iPad, you can do this in your Settings > Siri > Talk to Siri > Off.You can also tap to turn off Press Home for Siri or Press Side Button for Siri to prevent the voice assistant being activated altogether. On a Mac device you can control Siri by clicking the Apple logo in the top-left corner, clicking System Settings > Siri & Spotlight. Toggle off Ask Siri. The potential for spying might be a worry, but Apple offers plenty of privacy settings to prevent Siri eavesdropping on your conversations. Firstly, the voice assistants data collection for analytics is now opt-in only, a change made in 2019 following the original claims. If you are really concerned about Siri eavesdropping, you could turn off the voice assistant altogether. Apple is increasing using artificial intelligence to boost Siri, and some users just wont be comfortable with that.

I'm 32 and can't decide whether to get Botox. Will I regret not getting it in the 'undetectable' era of beauty, when people look inexplicably ageless?
Business Insider health writer Rachel Hosie struggle to decide whether to get Botox for her wedding. She said the decision was made harder by the rise of "undetectable" beauty treatments.People increasingly look inexplicably ageless, setting what she sees as even less attainable beauty standards.Getting engaged a year ago was one of the most special and exciting moments of my life. But wedding planning has come with some tricky decisions: Should I change my name? Is "Mr Brightside" an acceptable first dance song? And should I get Botox for the first time?I've changed my mind endlessly: perhaps I'll get just a little something to smooth out the lines that, as a 32-year-old woman, have appeared on my forehead in recent years. "No, actually, I won't," I think. For every sister-in-law warning against the "weird, shiny texture" Botox can give skin, a gym-mate encourages me to do it because I "won't look back."I worry that Botox will become yet another expense alongside the mani-pedis, hair coloring, and waxing that are quietly expected of women to live up to patriarchal beauty standards, but my feminist principles are what are really causing me to hesitate. While some men increasingly feel the pressure to look young, the scrutiny women particularly those in the public eye face is unrivaled. By erasing those signs of life, would I be part of the problem in a society that, as Anne-Mette Hermans, who studies the sociology of cosmetic procedures, told me, puts on women "a penalty on looking older"?Deciding whether to get antiaging treatments like Botox isn't a new problem. Still, it feels harder to avoid as aesthetic treatments and surgeries become more subtle and less detectable and, in turn, make everyone look inexplicably ageless setting even less attainable beauty standards.I know that women are valued for looking youngChristine Hall, an aesthetic doctor at London's Taktouk Clinic, told me that since the COVID pandemic, skincare has replaced makeup as the aesthetic focus for many women and girls. This reflects a shift from the heavily made-up look of the mid-2010s with many celebrities revealing they've had filler removed toward looking "natural" and effortless.Of course, by "natural," we mean young.I've never worn a lot of makeup and am happy to go out and about bare-faced, so I was pleased that societal expectations changed. But the focus shifting from makeup to antiaging just as my first wrinkles appeared made me feel uneasy.Antiaging has been big business for centuries, as Western cultures traditionally value women for beauty and fertility, which are seen as synonymous with youth. These ideals followed women when they entered the workforce in greater numbers."A beautiful appearance, especially for women, can definitely lead to advantages on the relationship market, but also in terms of jobs, in terms of promotions, in terms of so many different things," Hermans, an assistant professor studying cosmetic procedures at the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Tilburg University in the Netherlands, said.Psychologists point to a phenomenon called the "halo effect," where people unconsciously assume an attractive person has positive traits, such as trustworthiness and intelligence. A 2021 study from researchers at the University of Buffalo found that people perceived as attractive "are more likely to get hired, receive better evaluations, and get paid more."So wanting to cling to our youth makes sense, and I don't shame anyone for having treatments like Botox. I like my skin, but I wonder if I should get Botox when I see women without lines on their faces. Rachel Hosie After the FDA approved Botox for cosmetic use in 2002, Gen X started the trend of facial "tweakments" in earnest. It was taken to new heights by millennials amid the rise of social media and filters that made them appear wrinkle-free. The Kardashian-esque "Instagram face" quickly became ubiquitous. Now, increasing numbers of Gen Zers are getting "baby Botox" in their 20s in the hope of preventing wrinkles. (Some practitioners, however, won't administer Botox to line-free faces as it can actually make people look older and, if done incorrectly, lead to muscle atrophy and sagging). While the US has tighter regulations around cosmetic treatments than some countries, it's remarkably easy in the UK, where I'm from, to find someone who will administer Botox whether at a "home salon" or your dentist."The idea of tweaking things in your own body and especially the face, it's become far, far more normalized," Hermans said.Gen Alpha, children born after 2010, is seemingly set to continue down the same path, with the emergence of "Sephora kids" who are as young as 10 and save their pocket money to buy expensive antiaging products they don't need."When I was 16 or 17, it was all about blue eyeshadow and putting on as much foundation as possible. And now obviously the trend is kids wanting Drunk Elephant products and acids on their skin," Hall told me. Dr. Christine Hall has seen aesthetic trends change over time. Mike Blackett for BI Commenting more widely on beauty trends, Hall added: "Nobody wants to wear makeup. Everyone wants to have natural, glowing skin." At the same time, aesthetic treatments are "much more acceptable now," she said. This combination has in part ushered in what's dubbed the "undetectable" era of beauty. In recent months, the faces of Lindsay Lohan, 38, and Christina Aguilera, 44, have been the subjects of online fascination because they suddenly looked dramatically younger without the tell-tale signs of cosmetic treatments. Lindsay Lohan in October 2019 (left) and November 2024. Santiago Felipe/Getty Images, James Devaney/GC Images For the average person who doesn't have the same resources as celebrities, this presents a paradox between wanting the result of treatments to look natural while also making enough of a difference to justify the price tag.Earlier this year, I tried what I had hoped would be the holy grail of antiaging treatments: "microtox," for a hefty cost of 495 ($657).Popular in Korea but relatively new in the West, diluted Botox is injected into the skin's surface rather than muscles, preventing a frozen-looking face.I hoped my skin would be wrinkle-free while maintaining all movement and expression. While my skin glowed, the effect on my fine lines was negligible and wore off over a couple of months. My face before microtox (left) and two weeks after. Rachel Hosie So, when I look at photos of myself in the run-up to my wedding and wince at my forehead lines, I think, sure, Botox may be contributing to low self-esteem among women, but we can't change the world overnight. If everyone else is giving in and walking around with shiny, smooth foreheads, maybe I should, too?I want to look like myself at my weddingIt's now less than six months until my wedding, and considering most people get Botox every three to six months, I've nearly run out of time to do a trial run.Hermans told me that a big predictor of whether someone will get any kind of aesthetic treatment is whether those in their social circle have done so. None of my close friends have had Botox yet.For now, I've decided not to get Botox. While I may have crinkles and lines on my face, I also know who I am, which I was still working out a decade ago. My face looks like me, lines included. Just as my muscle definition reflects my love of strength training, my forehead lines reflect that I've embraced life.I still have moments where I catch my reflection in harsh lighting or an action shot photo and don't like what I see. But perhaps reframing how I think about my looks is the answer, not Botox. After all, trying to "fix" everything you dislike about your appearance is an expensive path to go down. When I'm smiling at my new husband on our wedding day, I want him and everyone else to be able to see my joy forehead wrinkles and all.
