As with any pricey purchase, it's worth assessing your needs before diving in and spending big bucks. When it comes to gaming PC deals, that means looking at how demanding the games you plan on playing are, how your new PC will fit into your existing setup (how many displays it will be driving, for example, and at what resolution and frame rate) and your budget. If you want multimonitor 4K gaming, you're probably going to struggle with a budget of $1,000, so it's best to be realistic with your expectations here.Once you've considered those factors, it all comes down to the price-to-performance ratio on offer. Devin Stone of the YouTube Channel Legal Eagle is suing PayPal over the affiliate link practices of its Honey extension that were detailed by fellow YouTuber MegaLag last month, he announced in a video published Friday. The proposed class action lawsuit was filed December 29th in Californias Northern District Court by Stones Eagle Team LLP and several other YouTubers businesses. It accuses Honey of intentionally replacing creators affiliate links with its own, even if its not offering shoppers a benefit, depriving creators of money in the process.The complaint alleges that PayPals practice violates Californias Unfair Competition Law and constitutes interference between creators and their business partners. The plaintiffs are seeking to represent anyone who was part of an affiliate program and had their link redirected to Paypal as a result of the Honey browser extension. Class action status has not yet been certified by a court.Honey operates by offering to find coupon codes through its browser extension. The MegaLag video last month describes how when shoppers interact with its pop-up offers at checkout, it replaces existing affiliate cookies with its own in the background and gets credit for the sale, whether it actually found a coupon or not. The complaint lists other ways PayPal is allegedly claiming affiliate commissions. That includes offering users rewards through its Honey Gold Program and encouraging them to Get Rewarded with PayPal, which prompts them to check out using PayPal. We dispute the allegations in the lawsuits, and will defend against them vigorously, PayPal VP of corporate communications Josh Criscoe said in a statement emailed to The Verge. He added that Honey follows industry rules and practices, including last-click attribution.The lawsuit acknowledges that last-click attribution is a standard practice that credits the most recent affiliate with a sale at checkout. The plaintiffs argue Honey is using that standard practice in a way thats deceitful and clandestine, luring users into clicking useless pop-ups that insert its code. Weve reached out to PayPal for a statement on the lawsuit. Lawyers are asking the court to make PayPal pay damages to creators and to permanently forbid it from swapping its own affiliate attribution at checkout. Theyve set up a website inviting other creators to join the lawsuit. A new lawsuit alleges that the PayPal-owned browser extension Honey is cheating creators out of money.Honey, which PayPal acquired for $4 billion in 2019, works by automatically presenting users with relevant coupon codes as they shop. However, in a video posted last month, YouTuber MegaLag described Honey as a scam thats stealing money from influencers.Among other accusations, MegaLag said that if a YouTuber or other creator promotes a product through an affiliate link, if the viewer has installed Honey, the extension will surreptitiously substitute its own link when the viewer makes a purchase even if Honey didnt provide any discounts. That means Honey, not the creator, receives the affiliate revenue for the transaction.Now Devin Stone, a Washington, D.C.-based lawyer who posts videos on his popular LegalEagle YouTube channel, has filed a lawsuit against PayPal, claiming that the company systematically diverts commissions from rightful earners, undermining the affiliate marketing system.Adding to the irony, PayPal enlists content creators and influencers to promote the Honey browser extension to their audiences, effectively enabling it to usurp the commissions and other benefits those same creators depend on for income, Stone said in his lawsuit.TechCrunch has reached out to PayPal for comment. The company shared a statement with The Verge saying it disputes the allegations and will defend itself vigorously, and adding that Honey follows industry rules and practices, including last-click attribution (an advertising attribution system where the final touchpoint gets all the credit for a purchase).Naturally, Stone also published a video about the lawsuit, which also emphasized Honeys marketing efforts, in which creators promoted the browser extension to their audiences and once those audiences installed it, Stone said it was like a sleeping leech in their browsers, waiting for the viewer to conduct a transaction.And thus, forever after, the creators future sponsorships and future affiliate relationships and advertisements were devalued now that the creators audience was infected, he said.Stone added that hes seeking class action status for the lawsuit and looking for other creators to join.

A raft of ominous headlines followed: Apples New Photo Feature Quietly Violates What Happens on Your iPhone, Stays on Your iPhone, and This sneaky iOS 18 setting shares your photos with Apple, and Apple to pay $95 million in Siri spying lawsuit.And suddenly those dividing lines werent quite so clear anymore. On photo search, what Apple is doing is designed to preserve user privacy while deploying AI to link photos to a central dataset of landmarks. But 99% of users wont understand homomorphic encryption, differential privacy and OHTTP relays that hide IP addresses. Optically, it seems just like the hybrid-AI Samsung is promoting.Apples real mistake has been a lack of transparency. Crypto expert Matthew Green complained that its very frustrating when you learn about a service two days before New Years and you find that its already been enabled on your phone, while tech analyst Michael Tsai warned that not only is it not opt-in, but you cant effectively opt out if it starts uploading metadata about your photos before you even use the search feature. It does this even if youve already opted out of uploading your photos to iCloud... I dont think the company is living up to its ideals here.And on the Siri front, the allegations date back five years to a time when almost all voice assistants were being caught out for blurring the lines between on and off. This is just a case of awkward timing, putting Apples AI privacy back in the headlines for long-gone problems. I reached out to Apple for any response to the furor on its AI photo searchnothing so far.But in combination, its very bad timing for the locked-down iPhone to seem less locked down that before. Samsung will herald its AI future at CES this week, and while the S25 will be more capable than any Galaxy before to process AI on-device, the reality is this is going to be a hybrid solution and the clear differences users had been steered towards are more blurry than before. The Samsung versus Apple AI stakes have just got more interesting, and 2025 is still less than a week old.

Bloodborne running on Steam DeckDeck Wizard via YouTubeTo quote a certain Atlus game I cant stop playing, Time marches on, and the age of a new king draws nearer. This particular king, of course, is the Steam Deck, which has been a retro gamers dream since it launched in 2022. But unless youve been paying close attention to the emulation scene lately, you may have missed the news that PlayStation 4 emulation is now up and running on Steam Deck. And its looking very promising.While I knew PS4 emulation was inevitable on PC, I honestly didnt think wed see it in a playable status on something relatively underpowered like the Steam Deck. After all, even PS3 emulation can still be hit or miss. And yet, PS4 emulation looks to be making some confident strides forward.As evidence of that, here is the tragically not-yet-remastered Bloodborne a game never released for PC running at ~30FPS on Steam Deck courtesy of the Deck Wizard channel:There are some dips below 30FPS, but Im surprised to see it in a playable state. Youll notice that even during more chaotic parts of gameplay, the framerate remains pretty stable. Now, consider that as of just a few months ago, the emulation wizards hadnt even managed to get Bloodborne running beyond the main menu.Speaking of those developer wizards... what makes this all possible is the ShadPS4 project, a PS4 emulator for Windows, Linux, and macOS thats in the early stages of development. During the second half of 2024, however, it has been progressing forward at an increasingly productive pace.MORE FOR YOUCurrently, ShadPS4 lists Dark Souls Remastered, Red Dead Redemption, Journey, Transformers: Devastation (yay!), Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, and many others as playable. However, it seems like more demanding games with complex graphics (read: not 2D) present more of a challenge. For example, inFamous: Second Son barely reached in-game status in September 2024.Still, things are promising enough that the EmuDeck team has added ShadPS4 into its default suite of emulators that get installed.
