3D printing news from September 2024 included additive manufacturing aerospace applications, the use of 3D printing for defense and investment in 3D printing companies plus an ongoing legal battle, the industry continued to showcase innovation and complexity. Here, we detail the key events that shaped the 3D printing industry in 2024.Aerospace, Sector DevelopmentsSpaceX finalized a $5 million licensing agreement with Velo3D for metal additive manufacturing technologies. This deal, complemented by an additional $3 million allocated for engineering and support services, extended a decade-long collaboration that has been pivotal in creating SpaceXs Raptor engines. Velo3Ds Sapphire 3D printing systems, renowned for their non-contact recoater technology, have been instrumental in fabricating complex, high-temperature components essential for rocket propulsion.At the same time, Velo3D faced pressure to delist from the New York Stock Exchange, a stark contrast to SPAC boom of 2020/21. SpaceXs ongoing reliance on Velo3D follows the latters delisting from the NYSE after it received a noncompliance notice related to market capitalization. The company had combined with SMG Technology Acceleration SE, a SPAC, and believed public listing would better position BigRep for expansion following its 2023 acquisition. By 2024, few 3D printing companies were pursuing IPOs, given the markets shift away from pre-revenue speculation. Photo via BigRep.Defense and Policy DevelopmentsSeptember featured the U.S. Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) implementing export controls on metal 3D printing technologies, targeting laser beams, electron beams, or electric arcs, alongside technologies related to cryocooling, quantum computing, semiconductors, and gate-all-around field-effect transistors (GAAFET). These measures aim to restrict the use of advanced 3D printers in sensitive applications, particularly by nations categorized under restricted groups such as China and Russia. The implementation of these controls aligns with the UK Governments introduction of new export controls on metal 3D printers, a similar measure adopted by allied nations, including France, Spain, and the Netherlands.By restricting exports to countries classified under Country Groups D:1 and D:5, such as China and Russia, the BIS aimed to prevent advanced manufacturing technologies from enhancing the military capabilities of strategic adversaries.For manufacturers, this regulatory shift necessitated a comprehensive review and update of compliance programs to adhere to the new licensing requirements. While these measures sought to bolster national security, they also introduced new operational challenges for companies engaged in international trade, potentially impacting the global supply chain dynamics.The US Department of Commerce building. The lawsuit accused Glock of profiting from the sale of handguns that could be easily converted into fully automatic weapons using 3D printed auto sears, commonly known as Glock switches. These converters enable semi-automatic pistols to fire at rates exceeding those of standard military rifles.Matthew Larosiere, a 3D printed firearms advocate, criticized the lawsuit as fundamentally flawed, arguing that firearm manufacturers should not be held liable for third-party modifications. Photo via WGN-TV.In a move aimed at safeguarding national security, former U.S. President Joe Biden established an Emerging Firearms Threats Task Force through an executive order addressing the rise of 3D printed firearms and machine gun converters. The task force will evaluate federal agency capacities to detect and intercept these devices, often referred to as ghost guns, which lack serial numbers and are challenging to trace. The executive order also emphasized developing safer active shooter drills in schools. Elsewhere, the U.S. Army conducted field tests of SPEE3Ds Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing technology, where a soldier with no prior experience successfully printed a transmission mount for a Bradley Fighting Vehicle. The part passed rigorous testing, demonstrating the feasibility of on-demand manufacturing in field conditions. The new printer incorporates Xolography technology, enabling the creation of high-resolution objects without layers. This launch positioned Xolo as a leader in specialized additive manufacturing solutions, targeting advanced R&D sectors that demand speed and accuracy. The system features multiple Element HT printers capable of handling engineering materials like PEEK and Ultem, offering automated part removal for reduced downtime. Despite securing substantial investments from industry giants like Boeing and Rolls-Royce, Reaction Engines found itself unable to finalize a 20 million rescue deal with the United Arab Emirates Strategic Development Fund. As negotiations stalled under the UKs National Security and Investment Act, the company teetered on the brink of insolvency.The failure to secure the necessary funding led to administration, with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) taking over and laying off 173 of its 208 employees. The collapse of Reaction Engines posed significant setbacks for the UKs hypersonic and space sectors, highlighting the vulnerability of high-tech firms dependent on continuous funding to sustain long-term R&D projects. Dr. Adrian Bowyer, founder of the RepRap, criticized Stratasyss actions, arguing that such patent enforcement could stifle the collaborative spirit that has driven significant advancements in desktop 3D printing. Conversely, Josef Prusa, CEO of Prusa Research, defended Stratasyss position, suggesting that protecting intellectual property is essential to maintaining a fair competitive landscape.The outcome of these lawsuits could have far-reaching implications for the desktop 3D printing market. A major state-sponsored cyber incident that targeted the United States Department of the Treasury in the weeks prior to Christmas 2024 appears to have begun as the result of a compromise at a third-party tech support supplier, serving as a warning on the precarious security and vulnerable nature of technology supply chains for IT firms and their customers alike.The cyber attack was allegedly the work of an undisclosed China-backed advanced persistent threat (APT) actor and, according to The Washington Post, it targeted among other things the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), a department of the Treasury that administers and enforces foreign sanctions against individuals, organisations and countries.Due to its involvement in sanctions and enforcement actions against malicious cyber actors it has played a key role in multinational operations against financially motivated ransomware gangs OFAC presents a very obvious target for threat actors.In a letter to senators Sherrod Brown and Tim Scott, who sit on the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs a copy of which has been reviewed by Computer Weekly Treasury assistant secretary for management, Aditi Hardikar, confirmed the department was notified by a third-party software services provider that it had been compromised on 8 December 2024.The organisation in question, BeyondTrust, said the APT gained access to a key that it was using to secure a cloud-based remote tech support service.With access to the stolen key, the threat actor was able override the services security, remotely access certain Treasury DO user workstations, and access certain unclassified documents maintained by those users, wrote Hardikar.Treasury has been working with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Intelligence Community, and third-party forensic investigators to fully characterise the incident and determine its overall impact.Based on available indicators, the incident has been attributed to a China state-sponsored APT actor. The compromised BeyondTrust service has been taken offline and at this time there is no evidence indicating the threat actor has continued access to Treasury information, wrote Hardikar.The Chinese authorities have denied the Americans allegations, with a spokesperson for Beijings embassy in Washington DC describing them as irrational and part of a smear campaign.The tech firm at the centre of the incident, BeyondTrust, is a US-based supplier with roots dating back to the mid-1980s. It specialises in privileged identity management and privileged access management (PIM/PAM), privileged remoter access and vulnerability management services. It claims more than 20,000 customers in 100 countries, including the likes of tech firms such as Axians and ServiceNow.It is also particularly well-used in the public sector, with multiple customers in local government, healthcare and utilities, including a number of NHS bodies in the UK.In a statement posted to its website, BeyondTrust said it identified an incident impacting a limited number of Remote Support SaaS customers that arose through the compromise of an application programming interface (API) key. It revoked the key immediately on concluding a root cause analysis into a remote support SaaS technical issue on 5 December 2024, and began notifying affected users, including the Treasury.It has since identified two specific vulnerabilities within the Remote Support and Privileged Remote Access product lines one of critical severity and one of medium severity. These have been assigned designations CVE-2024-12356 and CVE-2024-12686 respectively. Both have been patched for both cloud-hosted and on-prem versions as of 18 December 2024.According to BeyondTrust, the issues are both command injection vulnerabilities that, successfully exploited, enable an unauthenticated remote attacker to execute operating system commands in the context of the site user.A BeyondTrust spokesperson told Computer Weekly: BeyondTrust previously identified and took measures to address a security incident in early December 2024 that involved the Remote Support product. BeyondTrust notified the limited number of customers who were involved, and it has been working to support those customers since then. No other BeyondTrust products were involved. Law enforcement was notified and BeyondTrust has been supporting the investigative efforts.With this incident, BeyondTrust unfortunately becomes the latest in a long-line of cyber security specialists to find themselves making headlines after the compromise of products and solutions designed to keep end-users safe.Avishai Avivi, CISO at SafeBreach, a supplier of breach and attack simulation tools, explained how the breach likely unfolded.BeyondTrust, unironically, provides a secure method for IT support personnel to provide remote support to end users, he said. This method involves establishing a trusted connection between the support person and the end-user.This trusted connection punches through traditional perimeter security controls and gives the support person full access and control over the end-user workstation. Once inside, the support person can send documents back over that secure channel or masquerade as the end-user and send the same documents directly.The security controls protecting the USTreasurynetwork have no way of knowing something nefarious is happening, as the trusted connection is, well, trusted.Was there something that the USTreasurycould have done to prevent this? The sad answer appears to be yes. Again, referring to the technical information BeyondTrust provided, the system administrators at the USTreasury, or the vendor likely to provide support services, failed to configure trusted locations from which the support agents could connect. We refer to this as IP whitelisting [allowlisting].This failure is a critical risk with any such service [and] the same issue led to notable breaches in 2023 and 2024. NTDev shared their achievement on X, describing it as "absolutely insane, and possibly a record." This feat was made possible by Tiny11, the developer's custom-modified version of Windows 11 designed to minimize storage requirements. Tiny11 removes pre-installed bloatware such as the Camera app, OneDrive, and other unnecessary components, creating streamlined installations ideal for underpowered hardware.The primary goal of Tiny11 is to conserve storage space, which it accomplishes impressively reducing the typical Windows 11 installation size from over 20GB to just 8GB. By stripping away nonessential apps and processes, Tiny11 also significantly lowers RAM usage, enabling it to run on remarkably low memory configurations.Recent Tiny11 builds reportedly allow Windows updates to be installed, though such functionality is, unsurprisingly, not officially supported by Microsoft. Removing certain components can also cause issues; for instance, eliminating the Edge browser may break widgets that depend on its scripts.The usability of Windows 11 under such extreme resource constraints is another question entirely. With only 184MB of RAM, running a modern OS and apps is nearly impossible. A screenshot shared by NTDev shows system memory maxed out at 183MB with just Notepad open.It's worth noting that this feat relied on memory paging, likely helping the OS overcome some physical RAM limitations. However, NTDev emphasized that extensive optimization was still necessary to make the system bootable.Such "operating system torture" is nothing new for NTDev, who is well-known for pushing Windows to its absolute limits with various mods and experiments. Earlier this year, they achieved another extreme milestone: discovering the absolute minimum install size for Windows 11, shrinking it to under 100MB. Unsurprisingly, the resulting OS was so stripped down that it was barely functional.In another record-setting experiment just a month later, NTDev managed to install a fresh copy of Windows 10 in a mere 104 seconds, once again using a custom, highly optimized version of the operating system.
