• Widespread cyberattack targets Google Chrome extensions, compromises 2.6 million devices
What just happened? Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered a widespread attack targeting browser extensions in the Chrome Web Store during the holiday season. The campaign affected at least 33 extensions and potentially compromised data from approximately 2.6 million devices. The breach came to light when Cyberhaven, a data loss prevention service, identified malicious code embedded in one of its own extensions. The attack, which began on Christmas Eve, exploited a vulnerability in the Chrome Web Store's developer authentication system. Attackers used sophisticated spear-phishing techniques to gain access to the accounts of extension developers, enabling them to upload malicious versions of popular extensions.Cyberhaven's extension, designed to prevent users from inadvertently entering sensitive data into emails or websites, was one of the first to be compromised. "Our team has confirmed a malicious cyberattack that occurred on Christmas Eve, affecting Cyberhaven's Chrome extension," the company stated. "Public reports suggest this attack was part of a wider campaign targeting Chrome extension developers across a wide range of companies."The compromised version of Cyberhaven's extension, version 24.10.4, was available for 31 hours, from December 25 to December 26. During this period, Chrome browsers with Cyberhaven installed would automatically download and execute the malicious code. Analysis of the extension revealed it was designed to interact with different payloads that were downloaded from a malicious site mimicking Cyberhaven's official domain. As researchers delved deeper into the attack, they found that it extended far beyond Cyberhaven. John Tuckner, founder of Secure Annex, a browser extension analysis and management firm, reported that at least 19 other Chrome extensions had been similarly compromised. The attackers employed the same spear-phishing campaign and used custom look-alike domains to issue payloads and harvest authentication credentials. // Related StoriesThe collective impact of these compromised extensions is staggering, with an estimated 1.46 million downloads across the 20 affected extensions. This attack is also not an isolated incident. A similar campaign targeted both Chrome and Firefox extensions in 2019, compromising four million devices, including those within networks of major companies like Tesla, Blue Origin, and Symantec.Further investigation revealed an even more alarming trend. One of the compromised extensions, Reader Mode, had been part of a separate campaign dating back to at least April 2023. This earlier compromise was linked to a monetization code library that collected detailed data on every web visit a browser makes. Tuckner identified 13 Chrome extensions, with a combined 1.14 million installations, that had used this library to collect potentially sensitive data. The incident has sparked discussions on how to better secure browser extensions. Tuckner suggests one potential solution: organizations could implement a browser asset management list, allowing only selected extensions to run while blocking all others.

LGs 2025 OLED TVs continue to get even better, but without MLA
html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd" While LG is going all-in this year at CES 2025 on a revamp and expansion of its QNED TV line, we cant forget what LG is known for amazing OLED TVs that deliver top-notch performance every year. On the surface, the 2025 OLED TV line looks to continue that trend, with some nice added improvements to light output and some added OLED evo features that should excite gamers.Although the most interesting news about the OLED line is more about what isnt included. There are no MLA (Micro Lens Array) OLED panels this year on any model series. Let me say that again: The brightness-improving MLA technology LG introduced with the LG G3 is absent from all of the 2025 OLED TV models.Recommended VideosThere will always be a brightness battle as OLEDs compete against QLEDs, with the latter continuing to reach staggering numbers. To continue to improve brightness output, the newest brightness feature on LG OLED evo TVs is its upgraded Brightness Booster Ultimate technology (again, without MLA technology). It enhances light control architecture and light-boosting algorithms to achieve brightness three times higher than conventional OLED models. The conventional OLED models LG is referring to are in the B5 series. Please enable Javascript to view this contentWe dont yet know exactly what the three times higher brightness nit measurement will be, or how its achieved for that well have to wait until samples are in our test lab. For reference, the LG G4 measures 1,500 nits peak brightness. We expect more information on how LG is achieving this extra brightness without MLA at a reviewers workshop in a few months.RelatedThe M5 and G5 will also have an upgraded processor, the Alpha 11 AI processor Gen2. Last years Alpha 11 AI processor was incredibly impressive with how it managed the image color accuracy, grayscale tracking, brightness control so it will be interesting to see how the new processor version can improve on the already stellar performance. The new OLED evo line brings with it some certifications, as well. The new OLEDs have received UL Solutions Perfect Black and Perfect Color verification and are certified by Intertek for 100% color fidelity.LGs new OLED evo TVs will support Filmmaker Mode with Ambient Light Compensation. Weve seen ambient light compensation before from multiple brands, where the TVs image is altered and tuned to the amount of light in the room, but this will be the first time weve seen it applied to Filmmaker Mode, where the aim is to preserve the creators intent in various lighting conditions. The new gaming features alluded to earlier are on the G5 series 55-, 65-, 77-, and 83-inch models making it the first 4K 165Hz VRR TV that is certified by Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium. The G5 will also no longer feature a table stand for the 55- and 65-inch versions as it did with the G4, instead leaning into how well it looks mounted on the wall. A table stand will be available for an extra cost, or you can opt for the C5, which is designed as a table top TV.To not forget about sound, LGs AI Sound Pro promises rich, immersive audio with virtual 11.1.2 channels of surround sound. AI processing will tailor the different audio and video modes to each user. AI Voice ID can identify each user, switch to preferred profiles, and adapt its recommendations and settings based on viewing habits. This year doesnt look to include a blockbuster unveiling as weve had from LG in the past such as the OLED TV R rollable TV in 2019 or the OLED T last year. But we also didnt know about the OLED T until we walked into the LG suite at CES 2024. Theres a lot of nice incremental improvements to LGs OLED line this year. Well know soon if there also happens to be a surprise up LGs sleeve to go along with them.Editors Recommendations

The New Orleans attacker wore Meta smart glasses to record the area in advance, FBI says
The New Orleans attacker used Meta glasses to record the area before the massacre, the FBI says. The FBI is investigating the attack as terrorism after police found an ISIS flag in the truck. The FBI also said the man stopped a multiple gun stores in Texas the day before the attack. The Army veteran who attacked a crowd in New Orleans on New Year's Day wore Meta smart glasses to record the area in advance, the FBI said at a press conference on Sunday.Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US citizen from Texas, died in a shootout with police after driving a pickup truck through a crowd of people on Bourbon Street. Jabbar killed 14 people and injured dozens more in the attack. The FBI is investigating the attack as an act of terrorism after authorities found an ISIS flag, weapons, and a possible improvised explosive device, or IED, in the Ford F-150 pickup truck that Jabbar used.FBI New Orleans Special Agent in Charge Lyonel Myrthil said Sunday that Jabbar made two trips to New Orleans before the attack once in October and once in November. In October, Myrthil said Jabbar stayed in a rental home in New Orleans for two days, where he used his Meta smart glasses to record the streets of the French Quarter as he rode around on a bicycle."Meta glasses appear to look like regular glasses, but they allow the user to record videos and photos hands-free," Myrthil told reporters. "They also allow users to potentially livestream their video."Jabar was wearing the Meta glasses during the attack, but he did not livestream it, Myrthil said.Myrthil also said during the press conference that Jabbar stopped at "multiple gun stores" in Texas on December 31 and visited one business where he purchased a white ice chest that he used to hide an explosive device.US military spokespersons told the media after the attack that Jabbar served in the Army from 2007 to 2015, during which he was deployed to Afghanistan from February 2009 to January 2010.He served in information technology and human resources roles at the time and was later an IT specialist in the Army Reserve from 2016 to 2020. 'Breaking Bad' house in Albuquerque valued at $350,000 is now on sale for $4 million
The 'Breaking Bad' house in Albuquerque, New Mexico is selling for $4 million. The 3-bedroom, 1-bath home, valued by Zillow at about $350,000, is a fan attraction. The longtime owners hope the buyer will turn it into a museum or bed-and-breakfast for fans. The iconic home of Walter White from "Breaking Bad" can now be yours for just $4 million.Fans from all over the world have for years traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico to visit the home of the iconic AMC character.Homeowner Joanna Quintana, who grew up in the house, said her family decided to finally sell it after 52 years in part because of the constant presence of fans."We're going to walk away with just our memories," she told KOB4, a local NBC affiliate. "It's time to move on. We're done. There's no reason to fight anymore."While the home is listed for $4 million, Zillow estimates the modest three-bedroom, one-bath house is worth closer to $350,000, though that does not take into account the fan appeal, which could either raise or lower its value depending on the buyer.Quinatana's family said they hope the $4 million price tag will attract a buyer who wants to use the space as something that fans could enjoy."I hope they make it what the fans want. They want a BnB, they want a museum, they want access to it. Go for it," Quintana told KOB4.Potential buyers can view the home's 1,910-square-foot layout on the listing's website, which describes the house as an "unparalleled opportunity to own a piece of television history.""From the explosive opening to pivotal scenes that captured audiences around the world, this Albuquerque home became more than a house it became a character in its own right," the site says. "Now, you have the chance to own this piece of television history." Signs outside the home in Albuquerque, New Mexico that was used as Walter White's fictional residence in "Breaking Bad." Courtesy of Oaks Media Group For the Quintana family, the fans have mostly been a headache since the show became a worldwide sensation after its release in 2008. Devotees often show up at the residence to take photos or worse."Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul" creator Vince Gilligan called for fans to stop visiting the house in a 2015 episode of the "Better Call Saul Insider Podcast." Gilligan made the request after several fans tried to throw pizza onto the roof to recreate a famous scene."There is nothing original or funny or cool about throwing a pizza on this lady's roof," Gilligan said on the podcast. "It's been done before you're not the first.""And if I catch you doing it, I will hunt you down," he added.Luke Mones, a comedian who visited the home in 2018, described in a documentary how his visit turned hostile. Mones said one of the owners was sitting outside in a lawn chair, yelling at him when he approached."'The show ended eight years ago. Get a life!'" he recalled the owner yelling at him.

R.L. Stine Hypes Up Goosebumps and Fear Streets Future Scares
Since 1992, R.L. Stine has been freaking out kids on the page through hisGoosebumpsandFear Streetbooks. In recent years, both have been adapted, with a new Goosebumps show onDisney+ andFear Streetsmovie trilogy on Netflix.Stine recently talked with the Hollywood Reporter about both projects, particularly Goosebumps. Those original books were aimed at kids age 7-11, which he considers the ideal audience since thats the last time in their eyes theyll ever be enthusiastic. The kids in those stories were tweens, but the show features a high school cast, which he admitted caught him off guard at first. Once he adjusted to that, he found the new show scarier than its 90s predecessor and the more recent movies. The nextGoosebumpsseason, starting December 10, stars David Schwimmer and a new cast of kids. Stine got to see its first two episodes and hyped up the season as terrifying, and said it keeps true to the spirit of the books. As an example, he said the new season features someone dying, which he typically avoids in Goosebumpsstories. To him, that death in the show doesnt break the series rules, since its established in a flashbackif anything, he thinks that trick elevates the franchise, in a way.If youreallywanna see death in Stine stories, you can find that in Fear Street. He noted that unlike Goosebumps, that series kills off teenagers left and right, and everyone loves when you kill teens. Last year, Stine said a fourth movie based on the Prom Queen book was in the works, which is said to be directed by Watchers Chloe Okuno. It sounds that movie will be followed by two more films, as he told THR the writers are working. Ive got my fingers crossed. Netflix hasnt revealed anything about it yet, but its reportedly arriving sometime in 2025. Want more io9 news? The Palenque Station is part of the Maya Train Project, a development and infrastructure railway project of nearly 1500 km in circuit in the Yucatn Peninsula, Mexico. Palenque is the terminal station of the Maya Train and connects to the railway network of the rest of the country. Its geographical position is diagonally opposite to the consolidated tourism core of the peninsula, in Quintana Roo. The main interest lies in the well-known Maya archaeological site "Palenque" nestled in the Chiapas jungle.Save this picture!Save this picture! The design of the station sought a contemporary image, technically suitable for the new infrastructure, but resonant with the context. The architecture was inspired by both Maya findings and vernacular construction. The concept is defined by the large roof shaped with sloping planes covered with green tiles, a landscape of hidden archaeological features. The station is mostly open on its four sides, with fresh air entering laterally and rising heat released by the roof, reminiscent of the traditional Maya house.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!A mosaic wall abstractly represents the green mask of King Pakal, ruler of the Maya classical period, a historical artifact whose geometry remotely reflects the shape of the building. The station was located on the site of the first airport in Palenque, built as a levee, limiting lower lands with rustic character. The station is organized over different levels of terrain, receiving the train on a viaduct.Save this picture! On the lower level, the landscape flows and connects the roadway with the multimodal transport platform. Under the platform and tracks are the technical spaces. On the upper level is the central platform, operational spaces of the railway station and zonal control center; and a traveler support program, with access to a circular plaza, gardens, and a pergola, center of a future urban program. Due to its position between two urban cores, controlled development in the vicinity is anticipated.Save this picture! The station is structured with a central area of concrete columns delimiting the space reserved for the penetration of tracks, and concrete retaining walls. The lightweight roofs, supports, and bridge trusses are made of steel, with triangular framing for greater stability.
