Minecraft creator 'basically announced' sequel but has strong words for Microsoft
Markus Notch Persson has "basically announced" Minecraft 2, with the first game's creator also taking aim at Microsoft for their handling of the Minecraft brandTech14:10, 06 Jan 2025Minecraft is the best-selling game in history(Image: Mojang/Microsoft)Minecraft fever is well and truly alive. We've seen the announcement of a theme park, the movie is just weeks away from launching, and the blocky brand still lays claim to being the best-selling game of all time. Now, though, original creator Markus Notch Persson has discussed working on a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft, even going so far as to say "I basically announced Minecraft 2" in a lengthy response to a poll or his next game."I don't super duper care exactly which game I make first (or even if I make more), but I do know I'm making one, so I figured I'd absolutely be willing to give it an honest shot in the form of a spiritual successor to minecraft and put up a poll about it."Content cannot be displayed without consentThe lengthy response, which you can see below, also acknowledges that Persson doesn't want to "sneakily infringe on the incredible work the Mojang team is doing" but takes aim at Microsoft for the company "doing the Microsoft shittification about".Minecraft was acquired back in 2014 for $2.5 billion by Microsoft, with the corporation now owning the rights to the IP. That would mean Persson couldn't work within the Minecraft 'universe' without working with Microsoft, which seems unlikely given his comments here.Markus Persson is planning to work on something new(Image: PA)He does, however, say he respects Microsoft, and praises them for "letting the studio do things their way".Article continues belowPersson has been a controversial figure in the past, proposing heterosexual pride as a holiday, suggesting feminism is a "social disease", and supporting QAnon conspiracies while also engaging in transphobia online. He was not invited to the Minecraft 10th anniversary celebration. For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.RECOMMENDED

Nintendo announcement coming this week claims insider but its not what you want
Will the wait ever end? (Nintendo)Everyones waiting for the announcement of the Switch 2, but Nintendo may have other priorities for this week.Nintendo may have had innocent intentions when it announced the companys next console will be revealed at some point before April, but as we approach the closing date their strategy has led to some feral side effects. With so many leaks about the console, the deadline date has made every other official announcement since seem like a calculated act of trolling between Alarmo clocks, music apps, and Direct presentations dedicated to the Nintendo Museum.Another announcement which would have been more positively received at another time is the revamped version of Xenoblade Chronicles X and it seems like the Switch port might be taking centre stage this week, instead of the new console.Insiders have suggested Nintendo could reveal its next console in the first week of January, but insider Pyoro, who is generally reliable when it comes to Nintendo leaks, has claimed there will be only be news about Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition. When asked about the Switch 2 reveal speculation on X, Pyoro remained coy on the subject until someone asked directly about Xenoblade, which prompted a vague emoji to suggest that will be the announcement. When probed further, Pyoro, who originally teased the Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition announcement last year, before it was officially annouced, replied: Last time due to my vagueness, people expected the Switch 2 announcement but it turned out to Xenoblade. I dont want to mislead yall again.Asked directly if any announcement is coming this week, they eventually replied: Xenoblade. While its possible Nintendo could surprise drop the Switch 2 reveal any day now, others have suggested it will be later this month, at the earliest. According to fellow Nintendo insider Samus Hunter, they were told late January or early February some times ago [sic].Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is set to be released on March 20, 2025, so some kind of marketing push before then makes sense, to highlight the improvements in this new version. Its likely therell be some form of special edition too, much like the collectors set for the Switch version of Xenoblade Chronicles 1.If an announcement around the Switch 2 is scheduled for later this month, that means well likely have to endure a lot more leaks before that time.More TrendingNintendo has only confirmed the console will be backwards compatible, but weve already seen alleged images of the new Joy-Cons, the console itself, and the new circular dock. Microbes Can Colonize Space, Produce Drugs, and Create Energy
After so many years of learning how microbes work, researchers are now digitally recreating their inner workings to tackle challenges ranging from climate change to space colonization. In my work as a computational biologist, I research ways to get microbes to produce more useful chemicals, such as fuels and bioplastics, that can be used in the energy, agricultural, or pharmaceutical industries. Traditionally, researchers have to conduct several trial-and-error experiments on Petri dishes in order to determine the optimal conditions microbes need to produce high amounts of chemicals.Instead, I am able to simulate these experiments all from behind a computer screen through digital blueprints that replicate the inside of microbes. Called genome-scale metabolic models, or GEMs, these virtual labs significantly reduce the time and cost required to figure out what researchers need to do to get what theyre looking for. With GEMs, researchers cannot only explore the complex network of metabolic pathways that allow living organisms to function but also tweak, test, and predict how microbes would behave in different environments, including on other planets. As GEM technology continues to evolve, I believe these models will play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of biotechnology, medicine, and space exploration. What Are Genome-Scale Metabolic Models?Genome-scale metabolic models are digital maps of all the known chemical reactions that occur in cells that is, the cells metabolism. These reactions are crucial for converting food into energy, building cellular structures, and detoxifying harmful substances. To create a GEM, I begin by analyzing an organisms genome, which contains the genetic instructions cells use to produce proteins. A type of protein coded in the genome called enzymes are the workhorses of metabolism they facilitate the conversion of nutrients into energy and building blocks for cells.By linking the genes that encode enzymes to the chemical reactions they help make happen, I can build a comprehensive model that maps out the connections between genes, reaction,s and metabolites. (Credit: Chakazul/Wikimedia Commons)This map shows just a few of the major metabolic pathways in cells.Once I build a GEM, I use some advanced computational simulations to make it work like a live cell or microbe would. One of the most common algorithms researchers use to do these simulations is called a flux balance analysis. This mathematical algorithm analyzes available data about metabolism and then makes predictions on how different chemical reactions and metabolites would act under specific conditions. This makes GEMs particularly useful for understanding how organisms respond to genetic changes and environmental stresses. For example, I can use this method to predict how an organism will react when a specific gene is knocked out. I could also use it to predict how it might adapt to the presence of different chemicals in its environment or a lack of food.Solving Energy and Climate ChallengesMost of the chemicals used in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and fuels are obtained from fossil fuels. However, fossil fuels are a limited resource and significantly contributeto climate change.Instead of extracting energy from fossil fuels, my team at the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison focuses on developing sustainable biofuels and bioproducts from plant waste. This includes cornstalk after the ears are harvested and nonedible plants such as grass and algae. We study which crop wastes can be used for bioenergy, how to use microbes to convert them into energy, and ways to sustainably manage the land on which those crops are grown.I am building a genome-scale metabolic model for Novosphingobium aromaticivorans, a species of bacteria that can convert very complex chemicals in plant waste to chemicals that are valuable to people, such as those used to make bioplastics, pharmaceuticals, and fuels. With a clearer understanding of this conversion process, I can improve the model to more accurately simulate the conditions needed to synthesize greater amounts of these chemicals.Researchers can then replicate these conditions in real life to generate materials that are cheaper and more accessible than those made from fossil fuels.Bioinformatics analyzes biological data to answer questions about living organisms.Extreme Microbes and space colonizationThere are microbes on Earth that can survive in extremely harsh environments. For example, Chromohalobacter canadensis can live in extremely salty conditions. Similarly, Alicyclobacillus tolerans can thrive in very acidic environments.Since other planets typically have similarly harsh climates, these microbes may not only be able to thrive and reproduce on these planets but could potentially change the environment so humans can live there as well.Combining GEMs with machine learning, I saw that C. canadensis and A. tolerans can undergo chemical changes that help them survive in extreme conditions. They have special proteins in their cell walls that work with enzymes to balance the chemicals in their internal environment with the chemicals in their external environment. With GEMs, scientists can simulate the environments of other planets to study how microbes survive without necessarily needing to go to those planets themselves. The Future of GEMsEvery day, researchers are generating large amounts of data about microbial metabolism. As GEM technology advances, it opens the door to exciting new possibilities in medicine, energy, space, and other areas.Synthetic biologists can use GEMs to design entirely new organisms or metabolic pathways from scratch. This field could advance biomanufacturing by enabling the creation of organisms that efficiently produce new materials, drugs, or even food.Whole human body GEMs can also serve as an atlas for the metabolics of complex diseases. They can help map how the chemical environment of the body changes with obesity or diabetes.Whether producing biofuels or engineering new organisms, GEMs provide a powerful tool for basic research and industrial applications. As computational biology and GEMs advance, these technologies will continue to transform how scientists understand and manipulate the metabolisms of living organisms.Blaise Manga Enuh is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Microbial Genomics and Systems Biology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. NASA is calibrating new clocks so people can live on the moon
Precision timekeeping is necessary on the moon, especially when it differs from time on Earth. Credit: NASAShareResearchers at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have calculated a new system for measuring lunar time. While not needed for most peoples daily schedules, establishing time on the lunar surface as compared to time on Earth is vital to realizing a permanent human presence on the moon.Earlier this year, the Biden administration directed NASA to begin work on calculating a Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC). But thanks to the complexities of gravitational force and relativity, clocks in the Artemis Base Camp will move differently than those back home. This means entirely new clocks designed to run as accurately and reliably as possible. According to a study slated for publication in the journal, Physical Review D, the key to the new system is relativistic time transformations, better known as time dilation. Our work is conceptually aligned with the broader goals of time standardization in cislunar and deep-space environments, JPL astrophysicist and study co-author, Slava Turyshev, tells Popular Science. These are foundational for future lunar missions requiring sub-nanosecond synchronization for navigation, communication, and science operations.[Related: NASA is designing a time zone just for the moon.]A single seconds length is experienced differently depending on gravitational force and relative velocity. An astronaut on the moon looking at an Earth-based clock, for example, would see it lose about 56 microseconds per terrestrial day. Although that amount may sound minuscule, it adds upand that can pose major problems when multibillion dollar lunar missions and astronaut lives are on the line. These systems are crucial for supporting operational efficiency, scientific endeavors, and future commercial activities on the Moon, Turyshevs team writes in their study. Existing Earth-centric frameworks are inadequate for these demands, necessitating the development of an independent lunar coordinate and time system. As Universe Today explains, JPL researchers adapted the principles of relativity used in Earth timekeeping for a lunar environment. These included factors such as weaker lunar gravity resulting in faster clock tick rates, periodic time variations during the moons orbit, and local gravitational anomalies known as mascons which influence time on the moon. They then turned to detailed data amassed by NASAs Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission. Launched in 2011, the decade-long GRAIL program used a pair of satellites to map the moons surface, as well as measure its gravitational field. The team also factored in information gathered from the Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) project that measured orbital distances between the moon and Earth down to the millimeter. Get the Popular Science newsletter Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. By signing up you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. After some extremely dense calculations and physics analysis, Turyshev and his collaborators determined that lunar time drifts ahead of time on Earth by roughly 56 microseconds per day, depending on the Moons orbit. Although these semiregular oscillations only measure around 0.47 microseconds every 27.5 days, the tiny discrepancies can make a huge difference when calculating safe rocket landings, mission schedules, and more. The implications of a Lunar Timescale (LT) and a Lunicentric Coordinate Reference System (LCRS) also go far beyond the initial Artemis missions. Any permanent settlements on the moon will require a dedicated time system to allow for greater autonomy. But if all goes according to plan and the massive logistical, financial, and scientific hurdles are cleared, dont expect to need to calculate complex time zone shifts like here on Earth.Offering a direct conversion like 12PM EST = X PM on the Moon isnt straightforward due to the relativistic drift between terrestrial time (TT) and lunar time (TL), says Turyshev. However, if we simplify things for illustration, 12PM EST on Earth would roughly correspond to 12PM plus a tiny drift on the Moon, depending on the specific mission timeline.
