  • Uber is replacing Lyft in a points partnership with Delta
    www.fastcompany.com
Lyft and Delta are ending their points-earning loyalty partnership in April and the airline will start a new program with rideshare competitor Uber.Uber announced the multi-year strategic partnership on Tuesday evening at the CES tech conference in Las Vegas.Delta is thrilled to come together with Uber to create a connected travel experience from start to finish, Delta CEO Ed Bastian said in a prepared statement. This partnership creates more choice for customers to get to their destination in a way that works best for them.Delta SkyMiles Members who link their accounts to Uber will earn points on Uber rides and Uber Eats orders. Uber said people will earn one mile per dollar spent on restaurant and grocery orders worth $40 and up; one mile per dollar spent on UberX rides to and from airports; two miles per dollar spent on premium rides, such as Uber Comfort and Uber Black; and three miles per dollar spent on Uber Reserve trips. An Uber spokesperson says customers will also get access to benefits like improved Uber pickup and drop off experiences at Delta hubs.Gig companies and airlines have for years been teaming up with other companies in an attempt to snag repeat customers through loyalty programs. A customer may feel more inclined to book a ride through a specific platform if it means theyre also earning tangible rewards for somewhere else. Uber has loyalty programs with Marriott, Aeroplan, and Qantas. Delta also has a loyalty program with Starbucks where customers can earn points when buying drinks.Lyfts program with Delta meant riders would earn 1 mile for every $1 spent in the U.S. and 2 miles per $1 spent on all airport rides.Years ago we teamed up with our first airline to unlock more ways to uplevel and innovate around travel experiences, thereby turning those customers into Lyft loyalists, a Lyft spokesperson tells Fast Company when asked for comment. Were continuing to expand our horizons by joining forces with major brands who truly share our customer obsession, like Alaska Airlines, Bilt, Chase, Disney, DoorDash, Hilton, and Mastercard. Its unclear why Lyft and Delta are ending the program that earns riders flight miles. A Delta spokesperson says that Lyft users can continue earning miles through April 7. Customers with linked accounts should expect to hear more in the coming days, the person adds.We are appreciative of the partnership weve had with Lyft benefiting loyal customers who have collectively earned billions of miles, the Delta spokesperson says.

  • U.S. job openings unexpectedly rise by 8.1 million in November
    www.fastcompany.com
U.S. job openings rose unexpectedly in November, showing companies are still looking for workers even as the labor market has cooled overall.Openings rose to 8.1 million in November, the most since February and up from 7.8 million in October, the Labor Department reported Tuesday. They were down from 8.9 million a year earlier and a peak of 12.2 million in March 2022 as the economy was roaring back from COVID-19 lockdowns. But they still exceed pre-pandemic levels.Economists had expected job openings to fall slightly in November.Layoffs rose slightly in November, and the number of people quitting their jobs fell, suggesting that Americans are less confident in their ability to find better jobs elsewhere.Openings were up in professional and business services, a broad category that includes managerial and technical workers, and in finance and insurance. They fell in the information industry, which includes publishers and telecommunications companies. The American labor market has cooled from the red hot hiring of 2021-2023. Employers added 180,000 jobs a month in 2024 through November, not bad but down from 251,000 in 2023, 377,000 in 2022 and a record 604,000 in 2021.When the Labor Department releases December hiring numbers on Friday, theyre expected to show that companies, government agencies and nonprofit organizations added nearly 157,000 jobs last month and that the unemployment rate remained at a low 4.2%.The numbers were volatile during the fall: In October, hurricanes and a strike at Boeing limited job growth to just 36,000. In November, with the strike over, payrolls bounced back, growing to 227,000.The Federal Reserve closely monitors the labor market for clues about where inflation is headed. Fast hiring could push up wages and prices. Weakness might suggest the economy needs a jolt from lower interest rates.Responding to inflation that hit four-decade highs two and a half years ago, the Fed raised its benchmark rate 11 times in 2022 and 2023. Inflation came down from 9.1% in mid-2022 to 2.7% in November, allowing the Fed to start cutting rates. But progress on inflation has stalled in recent months, and year-over-year consumer price increases are stuck above the Feds 2% target. At its December meeting, the Fed cut its benchmark interest rate for the third time in 2024. But the central banks policymakers signaled that theyre likely to be more cautious about future rate cuts: They projected just two in 2025, down from the four they had foreseen in September.Economists also worry that President-elect Donald Trumps proposed policies including taxes on foreign goods and the deportation of immigrants working in the U.S. illegally will push prices higher.Despite more job openings, hiring is weakening, workers are even more reluctant to quit their jobs, and layoffs are low, said Robert Frick, economist at the Navy Federal Credit Union. It feels like a wait-and-see scenario as employers and employees alike wait for the next administrations policies.Paul Wiseman, AP economics writer

  • Dynasty Warriors: Origins Looks Set to Surprise Gamers With its Crazy and Over-the-Top Action
    gamingbolt.com
Remember Dynasty Warriors 9? Sadly, we do. TheDynasty Warriors franchise had never been a paragon of quality in games, but up to a certain point, it had never failed to deliver at least a certain level of unabashed enjoyment. In 2018, however, when Dynasty Warriors 9 came alone, the Koei Tecmo series hit its lowest point ever, emerging as a widely criticized title for everything from its dull combat to its bland and shoehorned open world design. As anyone who played the game will tell you including the staunchest ofDynasty Warriors fans all of that criticism was well earned. At times, you definitely see games falling victim to a bandwagon mentality that maybe takes criticism farther than a game might deserve, but whenDynasty Warriors 9is described as one of the worst high profile releases in recent memory, its hard to argue with that. What should have been an open world revitalization of an aging franchise instead turned out to be its worst mainline outing ever, to the extent that it almost seemed to entirely miss the point of what makesDynasty Warriorsgreat most of the time.Sadly, thats been our lingering memory of the series for a while now (2022sDynasty Warriors 9: Empiresdidnt do much to rectify things), but thankfully, at long last, it looks like the beloved franchise might finally be on the comeback trail. In May of 2024, Koei Tecmo announcedDynasty Warriors: Origins,a game billed as a return to the roots outing for the long-running series, and each time we have seen more of it, as we get closer and closer to its looming release, each time, it has looked like an increasingly exciting prospect- especially forDynasty Warriorsfans who are longing for a return to the series golden days.Eschewing its predecessors open world structure,Dynasty Warriors: Originsis instead going to adopt a world map structure, with players being allowed to travel to and mess about in maps of varying sizes, both big and large, both linear and more open ended. Its a structure that will be way more familiar to fans of the series compared toDynasty Warriors 9sbland take on open world design, and that in and of itself is enough to excite fans of the franchise. But of course, thats not the only reasonOriginshas piqued our curiosity.Dynasty Warriorscombat is obviously always been its biggest drawn, and in this department,Originsis looking like its hitting all the right notes. It probably makes sense to lead with developer Omega Forces ambition to finally be able to display as many as 10,000 enemies on screen at once withDynasty Warriors: Origins.Even its less busy scenes will, in fact, see players going up against much larger groups of foes than in previous titles. Coming up against massive hordes and enemies and mowing them down like an unstoppable force of nature has always been one ofDynasty WarriorsUSPs, so its encouraging to seeOriginsfocusing so much of its energies on that area.In fact, if hands-on impressions for the title and the extensive gameplay footage revealed for it so far are anything to go by, it also looks likeOriginsis going to bring back some of the relatively stiffer challenge ofDynasty Warriorsgames. Obviously, this has always been a series about delivering strong power fantasies to players, so youre not going to find FromSoftware levels of difficulty in aDynasty Warriorstitle by any means, but with time, the series has lost more and more of its edge, to the extent that, even though combat has almost always remained fun, after a certain point, it felt like it had lost almost all of its bite.WithDynasty Warriors: Origins, though players will still have the option to stick with lower difficulties and plow through endless hordes of foes with reckless abandon, ramping up the difficulty will result in an experience that pushes back. Based on what has been revealed so far, it seems like several enemy types wont be mere pushovers anymore, and actually making use of tactical abilities, managing the morale of your army, and smartly commanding the soldiers under your command will be a big part of the gameplay loop. Theres obviously inherent appeal toDynasty Warriorsbrand of mindless button mashing action, but its good to know thatOriginsis going to be a little less one-dimensional than that- for those who wish it to be, at least.Meanwhile, the games different take on the series tried and true narrative formula is also looking interesting.Dynasty Warriorsgames are, of course, always retellings of the well-wornRomance of the Three Kingdomsstory, and that much obviously isnt going to change withOrigins. Whatischanging is how much of that story the game is covering, with Omega Force deciding to only cover a part of theThree Kingdomsstory, rather than all of it in its entirety. Now more focused on telling the story of the rise of the eponymous three kingdoms rather than covering the entire saga, the much more zoomed in tale of the game will be able to dive deeper into characters and events in a way that past games werent able to do. Meanwhile,Originswill also feature younger versions of plenty of well-known characters, which means fans of the series (or really, of that period of time as a whole) will be able to see familiar personalities through a different lens, which always has potential to be interesting- when done right, at least.Another area where the game is looking impressive is its visuals. No, maybe it hasnt taken our breath away with spectacular next-gen graphics, but were obviously not going to hold every single game that releases to that standard. On its own merits,Dynasty Warriors: Originstouts great graphics, and thats doubly true if youre familiar with what the series standards have traditionally been in this department in the past. Dont get me wrong, its not likeDynasty Warriorsgames were consistently ugly or anything along those lines, but without a shadow of doubt,Originsis promising to be the series best looking outing by a country mile. From the character models to the detailed and varied environments to the enemies, the large armies you take on, and the way the explosive action is presented on-screen,the game is looking impressive in more ways than one.WhetherDynasty Warriors: Originscan touch the highest highs of the franchise from4to5to8,or whatever one strikes your fancy remains to be seen, and with a series that has had as many instalments as this one has had, it can definitely be difficult to keep hitting the highest levels of quality after a certain point- because of diminish returns, if nothing else. But after the disastrous misstep that wasDynasty Warriors 9and a few years of rest and recuperations afterwards, the series is back with whats looking like the exact right sort of comeback that it needed.Dynasty Warriors: Originscould still end up disappointing in ways that we havent been able to foresee based on its pre-launch coverage, but for now, its looking like that classic, adrenaline-fueled musou action game that fans have been starved of for so long- and thats incredibly exciting.Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.
