Once armed with this list of covetable antiques, consider hitting the road to little-known destinations for incredible antique finds.Related StoriesGustavian FurnitureSusanaLpezMargaret Schwartz, owner of Modern Antiquarian, says Gustavian furniture has always had a cult following, but there are times when its appeal becomes more widespread. And one such time is now!Gustavian furniture has a wonderful charm and an interesting history rooted in French Neoclassical design, Schwartz says. Swedish artisans reinterpreted the French style by simplifying the details, using local woods like pine and birch, and painting the pieces in light colors to brighten interiors during those long, dark Scandinavian winters. Schwartz praises the versatility of the furniture style. It looks equally at home in a sleek modern setting or a reimagined traditional space, she says, noting that people have been using pairs of chests as bedside tables and buffets for storage in dining and living rooms. Gustavian furniture brings character and history to our spaces and is a wise investment, often retaining or appreciating in value over time. Garden AccentsWilliam Waldron Antique garden furnishings and decor are also having a moment. This trend is being brought to life in two ways: bringing the outdoors in and treating outdoor spaces as true extensions of interiors, Schwartz says.Inside the home, Schwartz is seeing people favor large antique planters and urns to house trees and other greenery. Smaller versions are being used to display fresh flowers. French Neoclassical designs and Art Deco planters are particularly popular, Schwartz says. But planters arent the only way to embrace the trend throughout your interiors. Stone tables are also making their way indoors because of their durability and the unique texture they bring to a space, Schwartz says. Over time, these pieces have developed a patina from their climate, usage, and placement. With the growth of moss or oxidation, their weathered appearance adds character.SusanaLpezFor outdoor settings, people are seeking distinct pieces that age beautifully and bring individuality. French caf tables and concrete or stone dining tables make useful additions for alfresco dining, and comfortable seating invites lounging, Schwartz says. We especially love seeing swan planters on covered porches, stone animals arranged in groups throughout the garden, or tabletop urns planted with local seasonal flowers.Related StoryPainted Panels and ScreensJessica Barton, Photographer: Bess FridayIn a living room by designer Jessica Barton, a paneled art piece draws attention above a blue-painted mantel.Vintage and antique home decor remains in high demand, with design enthusiasts embracing timeless pieces that bring character and history to their spaces, says Noel Fahden, vice president of global merchandising for Chairish.Fahden calls out painted panels and screens as a current favorite for their artistic flair. • Apple Watch SE with new look reportedly launching later this year; new health features in the works
    9to5mac.com
According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple will be launching a new Apple Watch SE later this year, as well as introducing refreshes for Apple Watch Series 11 and Ultra 3. Based on todays rumors, its sounding like itll be a big year for Apple Watch.New Apple Watch SEGurman doesnt provide many specifics for the new Apple Watch SE, other than the fact that itll sport a new look.Apple introduced Apple Watch SE in 2020, based on the design of 2018s Apple Watch Series 4. Its possible that well be getting a design that more closely resembles 2021s Apple Watch Series 7 or maybe itll be something new entirely. In the past, Mark Gurman has reported that Apple is considering a plastic body for Apple Watch SE, so its possible hes referring to that. In any case, if youre in the market for an Apple Watch SE, Id hold out for this new model, which should finally launch this year. If Apple ends up going with a plastic Apple Watch SE, Id also expect a bunch of fun colors to come alongside it.Apple Watch Series 11 and Ultra 3The higher-end Apple Watches, on the other hand, shouldnt introduce any sort of new design. Gurman says theyll probably stay roughly the same. However, that doesnt mean there wont be anything to look forward to.Apple Watch Ultra 3 should be gaining support for satellite connectivity and 5G RedCap, vastly expanding users connectivity options. Apple will also likely introduce high blood pressure detection on both Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3 later this year. Apples blood pressure readings wont give users exact numbers, but instead warn users of anything they should be aware of:The blood-pressure featureis designed to work in a similar way to Apples sleep apnea detector. It wont give users specific readings such as diastolic or systolic levels but it will inform them that they may be in a state of hypertension.Blood pressure monitoring was initially expected to debut in Apple Watch Series 10, but got delayed due to the new, thinner design of the watch. Apple should be ready to launch it this year, however.Gurman also mentions that Apple is working on a new AI coaching service and an all new health app, though timing is unclear. These additions should coincide with the launch of AirPods with heart rate monitoring.Wrap upIf all of these rumors come to fruition, it sounds like Apple will be refreshing every single Apple Watch model at once, something the company hasnt done since 2022, where they introduced Apple Watch SE 2, Apple Watch Series 8, and the original Apple Watch Ultra. We were expecting this in 2024, but instead of Apple Watch Ultra 3, we just got a new black titanium Apple Watch Ultra 2 instead, and the new Apple Watch SE mysteriously never shipped. Nonetheless, hopefully everything works out this year. Are you looking forward to Apples 2025 Apple Watch lineup? • Apples new smart home hub might launch later than anticipated
    9to5mac.com
According to Bloombergs Mark Gurman, the new Apple smart home hub, which some refer to as Apple command center or simply HomePad, might ship a little bit later than anticipated.Apple has been working on a new device for your smart home for a decent while, and the company is expected to launch it this spring, particularly in March. As a refresher, heres what were expecting with the product:6-inch square display with thick bezelCamera at the topRechargeable built in batteryA new Apple operating system: homeOSHeavy focus on video applications like FaceTimeSupport for many Apple appsStandBy-inspired dashboardEasy ability to control your smart homeApple Intelligence supportDespite many rumors circulating for such a long time, it did sound like Apple was getting really close to finally releasing this thing. However, because of many of the Apple Intelligence delays, it might take a little bit longer to hit the market, according to Gurman:Apple has beenplanning to introducethehome hub in March, but it may take longer to reach consumers. The devices new operating system code-named Pebble is heavily tied to App Intents features coming in iOS 18.4 and iOS 19, so its plausible that the hardware itself will ship a bit later.Even though Apple is launching the hardware later, it still sounds like were set to see an unveiling in the coming months. Its a little unfortunate that therell be a release delay, but it makes sense given this products heavy reliance on Apple Intelligence.Gurman also reiterates that Apple is planning to launch LLM Siri, a more conversational chatbot-like assistant, in iOS 19.4 which will launch in spring 2026. Apple is also preparing its own lineup of smart home accessories, starting with a Face ID-powered doorbell and a more private security camera. What do you think of Apples rumored smart home hardware ecosystem? • Gurman: Vision Pro 2 wont release in 2025, but lower-cost headset is ramping up
    9to5mac.com
According to Mark Gurmans Power On newsletter, Apple is planning no sort of Vision Pro refresh in 2025. He mentions that its possible that Apple could theoretically unveil a headset ahead of a release next year, but all signs are pointing to new Vision Pro hardware launching in 2026 instead. On the other hand, he reports that Apples more urgent goal is to create a cheaper headset, and Apple is ramping up development for that headset.Other analysts, such as Ming Chi-Kuo, had previously reported that Apple Vision Pro 2 would be on track to enter production in the second half of 2025. It was widely expected to implement the M5 chip and have support for Apple Intelligence, though there werent many other hardware changes rumored. Kuo also reported that Apples cheaper headset is delayed until at least 2027.Gurman, on the other hand, describes the cheaper headset as an urgent goal of Apples. It still wont be shipping in 2025, but hopefully it isnt too far away:The more urgent goal is to produce a lower-cost version of the headset, and Apple isramping up of development of such a product. Stay tuned for more details on that. Besides that device, code-named N107, Apple isactively exploringother ideas. That includesa version of theRay-Ban smart glasses from Meta Platforms Inc. and an AirPods-like vision device with cameras. All those devices would be further out than 2025, but this year should be a critical step toward that future vision.Gurman also reports that Apple is continuing to work on other products thatd implement wearable cameras, including an Apple version of the Meta Ray-Ban glasses, as well as AirPods that include cameras. No specific timeline is provided, other than the fact that itll be after this year.Follow Michael:X/Twitter,Bluesky,InstagramAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. www.cnet.com
Apple released iOS 18.2 in December, more than a month after the tech giant released iOS 18.1. The update brought a handful of new Apple Intelligence features, likeGenmojiandImage Playground, to people with the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max or a device from the iPhone 16 lineup. However, iOS 18.1 gave those iPhone owners access to Apple Intelligence, which can provide summaries in multiple places across their devices.Read more: Your iOS 18 Cheat SheetWith Apple Intelligence and a compatible iPhone, your device can provide you with a summary of a lengthy email, a webpage, Message notifications and more. • A Century-Old German Villa Gets a Facelift
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Weve all been there. Two people live through the same experience, but then later each remembers it differently. One morning, two years ago, Gisbert Pppler was standing in a German villa where he was supposed to do some minor renovations when it hit him that that there was nothing interesting or noteworthy about the home. In that early meeting, he mustered the courage to inform the client that the interior wasnt unique or remarkable. I recommended gutting the house and starting over, the architect and interior designer says, even though that could easily have meant an early end to the project. Entrepreneur Katja Ptter-Ammer, who had just purchased the villa, has completely different memories of that morning. I believed in Gisbert Pppler right from the start, and that he was the right man for the job. When he ultimately shared his plans with her, she thought: Wow, thats daring, and my husband said: Oh God, I hope it turns out okay. But go for it. And what was it about Ppplers plan that won her over so quickly? I love colors and Im a spontaneous person. This house was also an impulse buy. My husband and I stood in front of it and knew, thats the one. It just had a good vibe.Angled sunlight highlights the unusual surface of the brick faade. The villa had been completely renovated once before, in the 1980s, though its landmark status kept the faade untouched. Inside, however, nothing original had been left in place and everything was new. Even the park-sized garden was run down when Pppler started the project. The original house had its charms, and as part of the Hohenhagen Garden City it was also of historic interest. Nearby is the Hohenhof, a 1908 villa designed by Belgian architect Henry van de Velde. A leading exponent of Art Nouveau, van de Velde built the home for art patron Karl Ernst Osthaus, whose collection would form the core of the Museum Folkwang in Essen following Osthauss early death. Two Arpa outdoor armchairs from Bonacina 1889 overlook the natural swimming pool that looks like a pond.Originating in England, the Garden City movement was embraced in Germany by many leading architects of the day including Peter Behrens and Walter Gropius. The villa that Ptter-Ammer and her husband purchased was designed by local architects, the Ludwig brothers. Today, the city of Hagen, where their home is located, isnt well known outside this region of Germany beyond its status as the Gateway to the Sauerland. In the first two decades of the 20th century, however, Hagen, which sits on the southern edge of the Ruhr region was a center of the European Garden City movement, thanks to visionaries such as Osthaus and van de Velde. The houses park-like garden was designed by Berlins Royal Garden Academy. That background provided Pppler with a few decisive cues when designing the villa. Choosing the right materials is one thing. But you also need people who know how to work these materials to the correct standards, especially since the project was a millimeter construction site, according to Pppler. That is, a building site where literally every millimeter counted given the precise design of the renovation.Pppler chose Italian Muschelkalk limestone for the bathroom. He made the washbasin and mirror himself.Outstanding craftsmanship is our passion, says the Berlin designer. Our clients enable us to work with great companies over and over again. Anyone who has spent time in 1920s houses knows that spaces can often feel cramped. Pppler turned three rooms that overlook the garden into one large living and dining room. He moved the extra-small kitchen in order to redesign a new one with Ofco, a kitchen interior company based in the city of Iserlohn, Germany, and created a suite on the second floor that includes a bedroom, dressing room, and large bathroom.A new staircase was placed in the same location as the old one. In contrast to the warm wood of the steps, the walls of the room are painted in a cool light blue. Most PopularArchitecture + DesignThese 24 Beautiful Places of Worship Are Built Into NatureBy Katherine McLaughlinCulture + LifestyleThe Best Coffee Table Books to Gift This Year, According to AD StaffersBy Jessica ChernerMagazineA Historic House in the Heart of Paris Gets a Dose of Practical MagicBy Alice CavanaghThe staircase connecting the floors was rebuilt, and as a central motif of the redesign, Pppler gave the passageways round arches. He opened up the conservatory entrance to make the space feel larger, just as he let more light into the house by installing oval wall openings (which he borrowed from Italian designer Luigi Caccia Dominioni whom he admires). Angling window openings are an elaborate way of making them look larger than they are, explains the architect, and are particularly common in Switzerland.Ceiling lights in the guest room are from Mawa Design. Visible in the background are some of the arched passageways found throughout the house.Pppler commissioned a fantastic freak of a specialist from Berlin to produce the reddish terrazzo floor in the garden room, which is reminiscent of the Hohenhofs interior. Another highly specialized team under master carpenter Stefan Freudenberger from the Bavarian town of Rimpar, near Wrzburg, added rounded slats to wooden panels in the plinth area there (and at the entrance), which Pppler chose so that the room doesn't look so empty and bare. The garden room has a dining table and a sideboard also designed by Pppler. On the wall are Joy sconces by Draga & Aurel. The Cab 413 leather chairs were created by Mario Bellini for Cassina. The tableware is from KPM.Most PopularArchitecture + DesignThese 24 Beautiful Places of Worship Are Built Into NatureBy Katherine McLaughlinCulture + LifestyleThe Best Coffee Table Books to Gift This Year, According to AD StaffersBy Jessica ChernerMagazineA Historic House in the Heart of Paris Gets a Dose of Practical MagicBy Alice CavanaghThe elegant two-tone kitchen was designed by Nicole Otto from Ofco, who also introduced the client to Pppler. The green wall element is a signature piece that Pppler designed for this house and which also serves as a shelf. The handles on the Ofco cabinets are by Gisbert Pppler Objects.Freudenberger was also responsible for the special treatment that Pppler wanted for the ceiling in the garden room. Its a kind of woodwork often found in yachts. Pressed planks make the wood extra hard and give it a nicely irregular and lively look. There are two carpenters in the workshop whose only job it is to replace overly large knotholes with nicer ones. Ptter-Ammerwho holds a doctorate in medicineand her husband are the third generation to run a medical company based on sustainability and naturopathy and they not only run their own apiary, but a culinary business as well. In other words, theres usually a lot going on in the house and garden. We regularly host guests and entertain here, Ptter-Ammer says, so its only natural that we live by our values. The glassed-in addition leading out to the terrace lets in perfect light for reading. With all that sunshine, the room is even used as a mini orangery. The furniture in this welcoming house is made up of a mixture of design classics and pieces from Ppplers own furniture line. The fabrics for the sofa and armchair covers come from Dedar, Bute, Svenskt Tenn, and Le Manach, the latter now a collection under the Pierre Frey brand that Pppler likes to work with as he says it offers greater flexibility when it comes to customization than almost anyone else. Even the door handles were specially designed and manufactured for the villa by a foundry in Belgium, perhaps motivated by a desire to honor Henry van de Veldes Hohenhof. After two years of sweeping renovation work, it is this attention to seemingly minor details that convinced impulse buyer Ptter-Ammer that this house is now their home. We will enjoy it for a very long time to come, Im sure of it.This German villa renovation was originally published by AD Germany. It was translated by John Oseid.Designer Gisbert Pppler.

Not So SuperAs Marvel Rivals reaches a ridiculous new player count record on Steam, its devs put a damper on things by preventing mods, so no more Goku skin for youSwings and roundabouts!Image credit: NetEase Games/ SuperBrando04 News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Jan. 12, 2025 Marvel Rivals seems a bit unstoppable at the moment, even if mods don't work anymore, as it hit a new player count peak this weekend. We all already knew that Marvel Rivals is popular, but its real test was always going to be how it fared when its first season dropped. That first season dropped a couple of days ago, and lo and behold, the game is popular - so much so, that it hit an all-time concurrent player count peak of 644,269 people, making it one of the most played games this weekend. It's also the game with the 14th highest all-time peak ever on Steam, putting it above games like Apex Legends and the also recently released and popular Path of Exile 2. Those are some big, strong numbers, and certainly cements that Marvel Rivals is here to stay - perhaps unsurprising considering the IP attached to it, but relevant given how many live service games die right out of the gate.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The downside? That season 1 update has also now stopped players from using mods, something that has quite quickly gotten popular given the presence of classics like a Thomas the Tank Engine skin for Jeff The Land Shark. Some other mods include things like a Pochita from Chainsaw Man skin for Jeff, Vegeta for Iron Man, and Goku for Spider-Man. There's already quite a few mods in general for the game over on Nexus Mods, most of which are visual tweaks, performance improvements, and the like, but obviously the concern from NetEase Games will be players using mods to cheat.Mods like skins have been banned from use right from the get-go, so this update isn't surprising in any capacity. In a comment to IGN, NetEase even said that it is "not recommended to modify any game files, as doing so carries the risk of getting banned." It's not like the game needs any help, but games like Team Fortress 2 are popular to this day because of the game's prolific modding and custom content scene. Not much to be done about it now, so I guess you'll just have to appreciate regular Jeff The Land Shark.
