The most horrific wildfires in recent US history have one key feature in common
The Los Angeles fires share a key feature with wildfires that burned down Lahaina, Hawaii and Paradise, CaliforniaPowerful winds met flash-dried landscapes full of vegetation to fuel the flames. The climate crisis is increasing the odds of events like these. The Los Angeles firestorms of the past week share a crucial feature with two of the most horrific wildfires in recent American memory. The Palisades and Eaton fires may be unprecedented in some ways, but they share a common root cause with the 2018 Camp Fire that killed 85 people in Paradise, California, and the 2023 fire that destroyed Lahaina in Hawaii. In Paradise, Lahaina, and now Los Angeles, the blazes grew to monster fires because powerful winds met a parched, overgrown landscape.Scientists expect to see more of that in the future. The Palisades Fire ravages a neighborhood amid high winds. AP Photo/Ethan Swope "There's definitely a trend that increases this kind of situation," Louis Gritzo, the chief science officer at the commercial property insurance company FM, told Business Insider. In all three cases, sudden drought had sucked the moisture out of local vegetation, creating abundant kindling for fire to feed on. Then strong winds picked up the embers and carried them into residential areas. The wind whips embers as the Palisades Fire burns on the west side of Los Angeles Ringo Chiu/REUTERS "When we look at the recent really bad fires the Camp Fire, the fires in Hawaii they all have that thing in common," Gritzo said. "They have a wet period, dry period, heavy winds, very rapid fire spread, a lot of ember transport."The winds were bad luck, but flash-dried vegetation is happening more often as global temperatures rise. How the climate crisis creates more fire fuelIn Paradise and Los Angeles, the dry months followed unusually wet seasons that fed an explosion of plant growth. Smoke from Pacific Palisades rises from brown, parched hills above the Pacific Coast Highway. David Hume Kennerly/Getty Images Last winter, heavy rains in Southern California led to about double the average amount of grasses and shrubs, according to Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at UCLA.This winter has not been so generous. The past few months have seen almost no rainfall, shriveling up all those grasses and shrubs.Swain has coined the term "hydroclimate whiplash" or simply "weather whiplash" for these drastic swings between extreme wet and extreme dry conditions. He has observed it across the planet in recent years, from various regions in the US and Europe to the Middle East and China.Globally, whiplash has already increased by 33% to 66% since the mid-twentieth century, Swain and his colleagues found in a new paper, published in the journal Nature Reviews Earth & Environment on Thursday. That's because warmer air holds more moisture. As global temperatures rise, the ceiling on how much water our atmosphere can hold is also rising. That thirsty atmosphere sucks more moisture out of the ground sometimes and, at other times, dumps more rain. Hence, greater extremes of flood and drought and more wildfire fuel. The Palisades Fire burns a Christmas tree inside a residence in the Pacific Palisades. AP Photo/Ethan Swope The effect of the climate crisis on wildfires "has been slow to emerge, but it is very clearly emerging, unfortunately," Gavin Schmidt, the director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said in a Friday press briefing announcing that 2024 was the hottest year on record. The scientific organization World Weather Attribution has discovered a clear link between the climate crisis and specific instances of extreme fire weather in Brazil, Chile, Australia, and Canada. The climate signal is "so large" now that it's clear in the global and continental data, but also "you're seeing it at the local scale, you're seeing it in local weather," Schmidt said. The transition from wildfire to urban fireSo climate change is seeding fire fuel in forests and grasslands. However, once wild blazes enter dense residential areas like Lahaina or the Pacific Palisades, they burn wood fences, ornamental yard plants, mulch landscapes, and leaves built up in roof gutters then grow to consume homes. Yard vegetation burns outside a house in the Pacific Palisades as the Palisades Fire spreads. David Swanson/AFP/Getty Images "The natural fuels may be showering us with embers, but what's burning our homes down and forcing us to run and evacuate is human fuels," Pat Durland, a wildfire-mitigation specialist and instructor for the National Fire Protection Association with 30 years of federal wildfire management experience, told Business Insider. As the climate crisis loads the dice toward extreme wildfires, he says it's important for city governments and residents to manage those urban fuels by reducing them and spacing them apart."I think just about anybody could be next under the right circumstances," Durland said. "It depends on the fuel and the climate."

Command & Conquer is 30 years old this year and I wish itd come back Readers Feature
Command & Conquer is 30 years old this year and I wish itd come back Readers FeatureGameCentralPublished January 11, 2025 1:00am Command & Conquer will there ever be another one? (EA)A reader laments the death of Command & Conquer and the real-time strategy genre, and hopes for a reboot annoucement for the 30th anniversary. Were told that video game companies are always cancelling projects that we never hear about; that we shouldnt listen to Half-Life 3 or Nintendo rumours because even if they are working on something now, theres a good chance itll never make it to completion or ever be talked about openly. I get that and can believe it happens to everyone, all the time, but I dont believe any series has had as many cancelled games, that are known about publicly, as Command & Conquer.Theres a whole Wikipedia page about them, some of which I didnt know about until I started writing this, with at least two big budget reboots that never happened. There were some remasters on PC relatively recently but despite the hints that these would also lead to new games, that never happened either. After popularising the whole concept of real-time strategy games, Command & Conquer now seems to be cursed to die with the genre it helped create. Itll be 30 years old this September and while Id love to think that therell be an annoucement then, at best itll just be another rubbish mobile game.Since the game is so old a lot of younger gamers have probably never heard of Command & Conquer but the problem is theres a good chance theyve never heard of real-time strategy games either, despite how big they used to be in the 90s. Nowadays, they practically dont exist, even though Warcraft started off as one and MOBAs like League Of Legends were originally created from mods of real-time strategy games. The problem has always been that they dont work well on consoles, because of low resolutions and the lack of a mouse (the rumours of a mouse feature for the Switch 2 is what initially inspired me to write this article). Thats fair enough, nothing anyone can do about that, but theres barely been a new example on PC either, in the last 20 years. Not even indie titles. The genre does suffer from a lot of the games being quite samey, but thats not a problem for things like fighting games and Id say that Command & Conquer is far more different from Supreme Commander, Homeworld, and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War than any two fighting games. My favourite has always been Command & Conquer though, for the simple reason that it was my first and I much prefer sci-fi to fantasy. But the remasters proved to me that the games are still great fun, and its not just rose-tinted glasses making me think that. But theres so much more that could be done with a modern version. The size and detail of the map could be massively different now, with the ability to zoom in and out as much as you want. If it was a big budget affair, I would also love to see you able to take control of units manually, which would allow EA to market it as part action game. Imagine running round a map like youre in Battlefield, but also being able to zoom out at any time to control any of the units remotely. That sounds amazing to me but Im afraid itd just be too expensive to make nowadays and be deemed too complex for modern gamers to play, which is patronising but seems to be EAs problem with trying anything out of their usual range. I just dont see it happening, despite how much Id love to see it.More TrendingI saw there was some vague talk of a new Starcraft, now Microsoft owns Blizzard, but much as Id take that too I dont really expect itll happen. So please, EA, let there be a new Command & Conquer and I dont mean a trashy free-to-play app either.By reader Gorf The remasters were welcome, but nothing new (EA)The readers features do not necessarily represent the views of GameCentral or Metro. You can submit your own 500 to 600-word reader feature at any time, which if used will be published in the next appropriate weekend slot. The Case for Nosferatus Mustache
The allure emanating from Count Orlok in Nosferatu goes more than decaying skin deep. And this was by design by director Robert Eggers, who discussed his choices to stray away from both the Max Schreck classic Nosferatu look and modern sexy vampires. The most appreciated contemporary vampire, Edward Cullen from Twilight, is not scary at all, Eggers told Gold Derby. So I wanted to go back to the folklore because the early Balkan and Slavic vampire lore is written by or about people who believed that vampires existed and were terrified of them. So clearly, there must be something scary there. And these early folk vampires looked like rotten corpsesmore like how we think of zombies in current cinema. So that was exciting theory. The last person who played a hot rotten corpse, ironically enough, also plays the other love interest of Nosferatus Ellen Hutterremember Nicholas Hoult in Warm Bodies? Here, hes just Thomas Hutter: regular man cuckolded by the power of centuries-old rotting rizz. Focus Features What can we say? That mustache Bill Skarsgrd really does it for us defenders of the Transylvanian Tom Selleck, who completely transformed past our expectations of what a vampire should look and sound like. In that same interview, Eggers continued, The facial hair, not everybodys a fan of. But it is, in my opinion, essential if you look at pictures of Transylvanian noblemen, if you can find one without a mustache or a beard, let me know. I suppose he could have had a beard, just as likely. But, you know, Dracula in the novel has a mustache. Vlad the Impaler had a mustache. Its a very common Eastern European facial hair style. So it felt to me that it helped him fit into that world and be a part of it more than anything. Its the historical accuracy, truly. The movie is total gothic horror edging to its inevitable succumbing to one overly dramatic dead Transylvanian noblemanwho has a penchant to make life hell for everyone around the object of his affection if he doesnt get his way. Skarsgrd shared with Esquire that the performance took its toll and that it was like conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me. Thank the horror gods, Bill was a freak and did the work to make himself one of the best character actors on screen, proving vampires can still be sickeningly seductive without the glittery chest or luscious golden locks of his brother Alexander, who played vampire Eric in True Blood. Its playing with a sexual fetish about the power of the monster and what that appeal has to you, Bill Skarsgrd said of his take on Orlok. Hopefully youll get a little bit attracted by it and disgusted by your attraction at the same time. And on Anne Rice, I swear he and Eggers did it. Gross, swamp rat-feasting Lestat (both of them) looks like a cute chibi character in comparison to Skarsgrd. He even sounds hypnotically powerful. Seriously, the sorcery? Bill outdoes Ralph Inesons tenor intonations in a movie Ralph Ineson is in with a deep operatic voice that rattles the loins. How else can you explain the somatic trances Lily-Rose Depp performed as Ellen?Orlok is an appetite indeed. Its okay, if you squint hard enough Skarsgrds eyes permeate through the disheveled side-swoop on his infectious scabbing face. We get why Ellen bounced to death on it, the gorgeously grotesque mutually assured destruction of beauty and the beast. A tale as old as time indeed. Want more io9 news? Heres Where in the World Bluey Will Be in 2025
So, you were a childless adult who got Bluey-pilled.Yes, somehow the endearing import series from Australias Ludo Studio about a family of Heeler dogs going on whimsical feel-good adventures has provided hours of some of televisions best made entertainment in this era of constant streaming releases. Its so good, its rightfully become global obsession. So many (including myself) might have even been given very aspirational views on parenthood or caught wind of a slight Aussie accent on child in your life. Because Bluey has become such a household name at this point, thanks in part to its BBC and Disney distribution, everyone is wondering where Bluey is going after three stellar seasons. Currently, things with season 4 feel very up in the airtheres been no official update for more of the show itself, but instead the announcement we received at the end of 2024 that there will be a Bluey movie coming in 2027, with series creator Joe Brumm departing the world of the Heeler family after its release. Where does that leave Bluey in 2025? Heres whats going on this year so far, as we await a new season announcement or surprise drop like last years 28 minute episode The Sign. At least theres Bluey Legos on the way too. Blueys World Brisbane Ludo Studio Blueys official mini-theme park is now open in Brisbane Australia. The immersive world of Bluey comes to life with set recreations of the house and various landmarks in the show, including the Hammerbarn Hardware store. Were dying to get one of the garden dog-gnomes! To visit youll have to book a trip down underfor more information visit Blueys World Brisbane here.Meet Bluey at Disney Experiences Disney Experiences Bluey and Bingo are taking trips to various Disney experiences around the world. Youll be able to meet the Heeler girls at the Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World in Florida starting this year. Our money is that theyll pop up in some sort of Australian activation at Worlds showcase at Epcot in Walt Disney World. As for Disneyland? It would make the most sense to maybe have a Bluey takeover at the former Muppets 3D theater at California Adventure, with a meet and greet near the exit to stagger the demand.Heres what Josh DAmaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences said in the release about the news:Bluey has become a household name for families around the world and we are thrilled to bring her story to life in new ways. We cant wait to watch our youngest guests and their families make memories with Bluey in our parks and on our cruises. But before they make landfall, at first the girls will set sail on special Disney Cruises starting January 2025, on select trips originating from Australia and New Zealand. On the special voyages, fans will be able to participate in interactive and clue-filled game that ends in a dance party as they sleuth around the ships with Bluey and Bingo. For more information about these bookings visit Disney Cruises official website. Bluey at CAMP store locations CAMP One of the first immersive experiences Ludo Studio did in collaboration with was CAMP stores. The stateside family exploration space and toy store recreated Blueys family home in stunning detail with the shows teamits incredible and not to be missed. Heres CAMP store locations where its currently popping up at: Chicago (until January 25) Boston Philadelphia New York City Houston (starting in February 2025) Watch Bluey online and on streaming Ludo Studio And of course, theres still the show itself to rewatch while we wait for more news about the film (and whatever future remains for the TV series beyond it). This theme has long fascinated architects, as they explore how spaces transition and interact, from the primal experience of viewing rain from within a cave to Johnson's glass villa's transparent connection to the outdoors.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Rafieian's House reinterprets this connection, transforming it from a dialogue to a monologue, in which memories formed through presence are preserved at each doorway where exterior and interior spaces meet. This concept hinges on "presence" and its temporal essencethe elusive nature of "now," which vanishes as soon as it appears. By delving into this temporality, architects identified a cycle in spatial experiences: "being," "passing," and "arriving." In this framework, "being" and "arriving" are architectural "places," while "passing" embodies the transitional space between them.Save this picture! In Rafieian's House, moving between outer and inner spaces creates a dynamic dialogue that, while recording memories, also separates them. This transitional passage captures varying sensory experiencesrainfall, sunlight, shadows, and even snowfallinfusing each moment with a unique sense of presence.Save this picture!Save this picture!A pivotal aspect of the design is the spatial arrangement. Two buildings stand side by side, set at different heights, connected by glass bridges that symbolize the idea of "passing." The glass windows lining each building reflect the residents' images, enhancing the sense of presence and visual connection between "being" and "arriving." These central glass bridges, linking both sides of the house, create a continuous, serene passage that invites glimpses of the outside within an internal sequence.Save this picture! The spatial composition of Rafieian's House is equally thoughtful. The ground floor in the larger structure contains the living room, kitchen, and stairway, while the smaller structure hosts the dining room, TV area, and guest room. The first floor of the larger structure holds bedrooms and a small living room, and the master bedroom is located on the smaller side. The lower floor is dedicated to a lounge that opens into a northern garden pit, with additional areas for storage, parking, and utility spaces.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Beyond its villa structure, Rafieian's House captures the essence of a home by embedding memories within its spaces. Every architectural elementfrom glass reflections to transitional spacesserves to record moments, making the house a vessel for presence and nostalgia. Through this design, the architects have effectively encapsulated a philosophy where each passage, each window, and each bridge act as transparent thresholds, reminding its occupants of their perpetual presence even in their absence. This approach imbues Rafieian's House with a timeless quality, reflecting the layers of memory that turn a mere building into a home.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeMaterialsConcreteBrickMaterials and TagsPublished on January 11, 2025Cite: "Rafieians House / Pargar Architecture and Design Studio" 10 Jan 2025.
