Music History and Contemporary Art Destroyed in the Deadly Los Angeles WildfiresAn archive of scores by composer Arnold Schoenberg and the collections of countless contemporary artists have been lost in the blaze The Eaton Fire has devastated the community of Altadena. Public domain via Wikimedia CommonsThe wildfires still burning in Los Angeles have killed at least24 people, razed thousands of homes andhistoric landmarks and destroyed countless treasured itemsincluding creative works stored in the area. One such loss is a collection of music written by 20th-century Austrian-American composerArnold Schoenberg, who developed the 12-tone technique, an innovative style of musical composition. An archive of roughly 100,000 scores and parts written by Schoenberg had been kept in a building behind the house of his son, Larry Schoenberg, in Los Angeles Pacific Palisades neighborhood, which has been devastated by thefires. Its brutal, Larry, 83, tells theNew York Times Javier C. Hernndez. We lost everything. Composer Arnold Schoenberg moved to southern California in the 1930s. Florence Homolka via Wikimedia CommonsLarry runs the companyBelmont Music Publishers, which rents and sells Schoenberg scores. The fires didnt destroy any original Schoenberg manuscripts. But without the archive of copies, upcoming performances of Schoenberg pieces may be difficult. As Leon Botstein, the music director of the American Symphony Orchestra, tells the Times, the collection was an indispensable resource. Belmont provided the orchestra with scores for its performance of Schoenbergs Gurrelieder last year.Born in Vienna in 1874, Schoenberg rose up in the European music scene during the early 20th century. As theWashington Posts Michael Dirda wrote in 2023, the composers increasingly esoteric music regularly elicited catcalls and uproar from early audiences. After fleeing the Nazis in 1933, Schoenberg landed in California, where he began teaching at several universities. Per reports from January 12, the composers longtimehome in the Brentwood neighborhood has been spared from fire damage.Larrys home and the archivewhich included photos, letters, books and other composers arrangements of Schoenbergs workswas completely destroyed.Theres a finality here which is astonishing, Larry tells the Times. Theres no hope left that youre going to find or retrieve anything. And thats a different kind of grief.Los Angeles contemporary artistspainters, potters, sculptors and moreare also suffering the loss of creative works. As multidisciplinary artistKathryn Andrews tellsARTnews Karen K. Ho, There are certain things that cant be replaced.Like Larry Schoenberg, Andrews lives in Pacific Palisades. She evacuated her home before it burned down. This is the second time shes lost a house to wildfire: In 2020, theBobcat Fire destroyed her home in Juniper Hills, north of Los Angeles. This time, Andrews lost her own really lovely collection of art, which included works byRashid Johnson,Jim Shaw,Fredrik Nilsen and others. Shed built the collection over two decades. After the last fire, I had the equivalent of a writers blocka creative block, Andrews tells ARTnews. A lot of animals died in that one. Its not just the loss of stuff, you know, its the loss of nature, its the loss of a community, its the loss of dreams. It has a very intense impact. The fires have razed countless local galleries, including AltadenasAlto Beta, which contained a ten-painting show by artistMary Anna Pomonis when it burned down.PainterRachelle Sawatsky tellsCulturedTara Walters, who lives in the Malibu Village neighborhood, tellsHyperallergics Valentina Di Liscia, Matt Stromberg, Maya Pontone and Rhea Nayyar, Everything is gone from my house. My car. My paintings inside. All my heirlooms. My wedding dress. Everything.Kelly Akashi, an Altadena-based sculptor of glass and bronze, lost her home and studio, report theTimes Robin Pogrebin, Julia Halperin and Zachary Small. The building contained recent and archival work, including pieces shed selected to display in her first exhibition at theLisson Gallery later this month. Per the Times, She had considered naming one of her recent works Monument to Loss. Now it is actually lost. The fires also consumed the livelihood of interdisciplinary artist Ross Simonini. As he tells Cultured, the wildfire destroyed his familys home, his studio and nearly all the work I have ever made. That includes childhood drawings I made with my mom, the drawing that helped me believe I could be an artist and several new bodies of work, Simonini adds. I dont think I will ever stop grieving that loss, but the loving response from the art community has already started transforming that grief into something else: a feeling of deep human connection that Ive looked for all my life. It only took losing everything to get it.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.Filed Under: Archives, Art History, Artists, Arts, California, Composers, Contemporary Art, Fire, Music, Musical History, Painters, Painting, Sculpture, Wildfire

  • GOG teams with European game archivist organization to continue preservation efforts
    www.gamedeveloper.com
Justin Carter, Contributing EditorJanuary 14, 20251 Min Readvia GOGAt a GlanceGOG launched a program to preserve games last year, which promises ongoing support for older and delisted PC titles.Digital game storefront GOG is furthering its recent game preservation efforts by joining with the European Federation of Game Archives, Museums, and Preservation Projects (EFGAMP).The European group collects and preserves digital games, and represents "over 20 heritage institutions and other organizations dedicated to preserving video games as cultural heritage." GOG is the first Polish organization in its ranks, which includes the French-based MO5, Berlin's Computerspielemuseum, and the Video Game Museum in Rome.GOG's preservation effortsGOG launched its titular preservation program in November, which pledged to keep classic games (read: 10 years or older) up to date with current and upcoming Windows hardware. In December, the initiative expanded to include titles delisted by their developers, such as Blizzard's first two Warcraft games. Players who purchased them on GOG before their delisting can still access them, and the company pledged all delisted games joining the program will "remain compatible with modern systems, preserving their experience for years to come.""Classic games and the mission to safeguard them for future generations have always been at the core of our work," said GOG's managing director Maciej Gobiewski. "As a European company,we feel a responsibility to lead in preserving gaming heritage. Joining EFGAMP reinforces this commitment."EFGAMP COO Andreas Lange noted the storefront's "unique perspective" in game distribution "complements the work of our existing members by bringing further digital expertize to our collective efforts. GoG is a fantastic addition to EFGAMP, whose members are primarily rooted in the cultural heritage sector."Now that it's part of the EFGAMP, Gobiewski said GOG will "expand institutional collaboration with museums and governmental and non-governmental organizations worldwide. • Parallels is testing x86 emulation on Apple silicon Macs
    www.theverge.com
Parallels has added support for x86 emulation in Parallels Desktop 20.2, product manager Mikhail Ushakov wrote in a blog post last week. The early technology preview will let you emulate Intel-based hardware on an M1-or-greater Mac, a first for Parallels since Apples Arm transition in 2020 but dont expect stellar performance.Parallels says users will be able to:Run existing x86_64 Windows 10, Windows 11*, Windows Server 2019/2022, and some Linux distributives with UEFI BIOS via Parallels Emulator.Create new Windows 10 21H2 and Windows Server 2022 virtual machines. Image: ParallelsHowever, performance will be really slow, with up to seven-minute boot times, Ushakov says. Other limitations include no external USB device support, Windows 11 24H2 isnt supported, and you can only emulate 64-bit operating systems, though Ushakov says you can run 32-bit apps.He writes that the option to start one of these VMs is hidden for now to avoid false expectations from those who dont need x86 emulation.Parallels has a longer list of caveats in a separate article. Parallels now puts Apple Intelligence Writing Tools in the Windows context menu. Image: ParallelsVersion 20.2 brings some other changes, including support for automatic time and time zone syncing in macOS virtual machines on Apple silicon. It also adds Apples AI-powered Writing Tools to the Windows right-click menu in Word, Powerpoint, and the classic version of Outlook. Before, you had to use a keyboard shortcut or the macOS menu bars Edit menu.

  • TAI 134: The US Reveals Its New Regulations for the Diffusion of Advanced AI
    towardsai.net
Author(s): Towards AI Editorial Team Originally published on Towards AI. What happened this week in AI by LouieThe Biden administrations Framework for Artificial Intelligence Diffusion has been unveiled, setting out sweeping rules for managing how advanced AI technologies are exported and utilized globally. The framework creates a three-tier system for AI chip exports and model weights, aiming to balance U.S. technological leadership with international cooperation. The rules triggered immediate pushback from Nvidia and other tech companies while receiving cautious support from some national security experts. The framework was introduced in the final days of the Biden administration, leading to speculation about its longevity and the incoming Trump administrations potential to alter or repeal it. The 120-day comment period might also allow for significant changes. At its core, the framework establishes different levels of access to U.S. AI technology. The top tier of 18 close allies maintains essentially unrestricted access. The middle tier, covering most countries, faces caps on computing power imports unless they meet specific security requirements. This group is effectively capped at around 50,000 advanced AI chips through 2027, absent exceptions and agreements. The bottom tier of restricted countries remains largely blocked from access to chips that meet specific criteria. The rules also control exports of AI model weights above certain thresholds (initially a rather arbitrary threshold of 10 computational operations or more during training). However, open-weight models remain uncontrolled. The framework requires security standards for hosting powerful AI systems weights internationally.Nvidia responded forcefully against the framework, calling it unprecedented and misguided while arguing it would derail innovation and economic growth worldwide. The company suggests the rules will push countries toward Chinese alternatives rather than achieve their intended security goals. Other critics warn about diplomatic fallout, noting that many allies find themselves in tier two. However, the administration counters that China lacks the capacity to backfill restricted chip exports in the near term. They argue this creates leverage to encourage the adoption of U.S. security standards in exchange for computing access. Why should you care? This framework could significantly reshape global AI development, but whether it will do so effectively remains to be seen. The broader question is whether this framework will achieve its stated goals or disrupt innovation, backfire against the US current tech leadership, and exacerbate fragmentation in the global AI landscape. Will tier-two countries align with U.S. standards, or will they seek alternatives in Chinese or open-source technologies? Can the U.S. bureaucracy implement such a complex system without causing delays and inefficiencies? Will these rules actually enhance national security, or are they merely symbolic gestures that fail to address the real risks of AI? In the near term, could this create a new bottleneck to GPUs and LLM token access even in the US, as the global data center capacity planned for tier 2 countries gets delayed?Given our belief in the capability, utility, and continued rapid pace of growth of these models, the answers to these questions will shape not just the trajectory of U.S. AI leadership but also the global dynamics of technology and power in the years to come.Hottest News1. • How Suzanne Kasler Designed an Elegant Forever Home in Atlanta
    www.housebeautiful.com
When a young couple with three kids acquired 9.5 acres of undeveloped land in Atlantas Buckhead neighborhood, they knew they needed to go all in to create a modern farmhouse that felt perfectly situated in that unusual slice of urban countryside. They enlisted interior designer Suzanne Kasler to give the more than 15,000-square-foot residence a warm and casual elegance that would grow with their family over time.Every room on the ground floor of the six-bedroom, 12-bathroom property either flows seamlessly outdoors or into another zone. In the living room, bifold glass doors accordion open onto a swimming pool overlooking the Chattahoochee Rivera California-style setup. It reminds me of the houses you see in Napa Valley, Kasler says. The primary and childrens bedrooms are intentionally located on the same floor to encourage family connection. And every space is meant to feel polished. All of our young clients today are sophisticated, she says. Theyve traveled the world.A city home that actually looks like its in the countrythats really special. For the furnishings and art, Kasler chose timeless pieces in a quiet palette that wouldnt pull focus from the landscape outside. Plush white sofas and soft rugs in tan and pale blue complement the luxe, textural surfaces of wood ceilings and plaster walls. Pops of blue are a recurring theme throughout, a subtle reference to the stunning river views. The studys ceiling is painted in a high-gloss sapphire, while a starry print wallpaper envelops the attic playroom. Patterned fabrics are strategically deployed to catch the eye, like the striped stools in the open-concept kitchen and an upholstered wall that doubles as a bulletin board in the office. In the formal dining room, a blush floral wallcovering creates a garden-like backdrop. The homeowners also invested in entertaining. A media room, bar, and basketball court on the lower floor, plus a dedicated crafts room upstairs, mean theres something fun for guests of any age. The house is beautiful, but its not overdecorated, Kasler says. I love that when I went back to visit, the kids things were everywhere.Living RoomMali AzimaWe kept the color palette all about texture and neutrals. Paint: White Dove, Benjamin Moore. • AI tools to elevate your job search in 2025
    thenextweb.com
More than half of knowledge workers now use generative AI weekly, according to a recent piece of research from Asanas Work Innovation Lab, in partnership with Anthropic. The study also found that takeup ramped up by 44% over nine months in 2024. And those who use AI daily benefit most. Eighty-nine percent reported a productivity boost, whereas casual monthly users only saw a 39% increase in productivity. The report also found that knowledge workers believe generative AI has the potential to automate 31% of their job responsibilities. And the more ways they use AI tools at work, the more possibilities they see.8 jobs to discover this weekAlready, knowledge workers are deploying AI across an average of five different use cases at work, from technical writing to idea generation and brainstorming, demonstrating AIs versatility across various workflows, the studys authors say.The of EU techThe latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol' founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. It's free, every week, in your inbox. Sign up now!As workers apply AI to a broader range of tasks, they discover innovative ways to enhance their work that they might not have initially considered. This leads them to find new applications for AI, creating a virtuous cycle of AI-powered productivity: the more you use it, the more you find new ways to use it, and the more productive you become.Of course, these use cases differ across industries, with those working in technology most likely to use generative AI for technical writing, for example. Those working in financial services are more likely to use it for process automation and it wont be a surprise to find that workers in the media and entertainment sectors gravitate towards tools for image generation. To date, only about 31% of companies have a formal AI strategy in place, which means that in many cases, workers usage of genAI tools is unregulated and has led to the rise of the BYOAI trend, AKA bring your own AI to work. One way all workers can leverage the use of generative AI tools (regardless of their employers stance), is in looking for a new role. Within recruitment, automation is taking over, and software is now doing much of what humans once managed, like sourcing, outreach, and application filtering. Some companies are even using AI to conduct job interviews, with mixed results. In the US, a case was filed last year concerning pharmacy chain CVS. As part of its application process, the company utilises video-interview technology which uses artificial intelligence for analysis. The plaintiff alleged that CVS broke Massachusetts law because it did not provide an opt-out.Amplifying your job searchWhile there may be downsides, the use of generative AI when it comes to job seeking is a net positive.Consider the Reddit user, for example, who recently created an AI bot that was used to automatically apply to 1,000 jobs, with the result being 50 interviews in one month. Thats far more than what many job hunters can expect using traditional career search methods. The user, who subsequently deleted their Reddit account, said at the time that: The tailored CVs and cover letters, customized based on each job description, made a significant difference.Speed and accuracy matter, and on the House of Talent Job Board, a new conversational AI job search agent can help you locate your next tech position quickly and accurately.Find the agent on the bottom right-hand side of your screen where it will allow you to search for best-matched jobs using your CV. Or, you can tell it a bit about yourself, your skills, your current locationor where youd like to work.Once youve isolated the best roles to apply for, generational AI can be tasked with optimising your application materials thanks to its time-saving capabilities.AI tools can help you to make fewer grammatical mistakes, align your experience effectively against the actual job description, and essentially speed up the whole process.Perplexity or ChatGPT can be used to quickly compare your CV against a job ad, outputting areas you need to finesse or skills you should highlight, helping you to optimize application materials for each role you apply for.If youve ever considered sliding into a recruiters DMs on LinkedIn, for example, or sending an email to a hiring manager on spec, then this is another area in which genAI can help. Claude, for example, can help you compose succinct, effective messages or emails you can then edit to make sure theyre completely on point.Cover letters are another time-consuming element of a job hunt that many find daunting. Many job applicants simply dont bother unless its a specific requirement. However, hiring managers like cover letters because they add additional context to your CV. You can showcase your motivation and desire for the role, along with more intangible talents such as your soft skills. The good news is that this process can also be simplified by prompting a Gen AI tool to create a cover letter based on your CV. This framework can then be padded out as you see fit add in additional experience or KPIs you succeeded with, along with an explanation of why youd really love the job.And thats not all. AI can help you research companies, positions, and terminology ahead of job interviews, helping you prepare. You can also use an AI tool as a sounding board for interview preparation, by asking it to generate sample questions for a software engineering role, for example. But no matter what tools or platforms you use, its incumbent on you to check the outputs. Generative AI tools are great assistants, but youre in the driving seat.Ready to look for a new tech role? Apple has released a new beta 3 update. Just hours after the recent debut of beta 3 for tvOS and HomePod only, watchOS 11.3 has received its beta 3 update too.New beta brings software updates closer to launchApples current beta cycle has been fairly quiet. For example, watchOS 11.3 currently has no known exclusive features.More broadly across Apples platforms, theres new robot vacuum support coming to the Home app on supported devices, a Calculator app fix, and Genmoji on the Mac.But thats about it for noticeable changes so far.Last year, Apples x.3 releases were similarly sparse on features. As a result, the beta cycle wrapped up surprisingly quickly. We may see the same thing happen this time around.Apple only released three betas before the RC (release candidate) versions last winter, so its very possible the same pattern will play out again.Assuming that the short beta cycle does happen, we could see a public launch of these updates in the next couple weeks, before the end of January.Of course, Apple needs to release beta 3 for its flagship iPhone, iPad, and Mac platforms first. And for now at least, those releases are mysteriously MIA.Have you installed beta 3 of watchOS 11.3? Discover any changes? • Zuckerberg Announces Layoffs After Saying Coding Jobs Will Be Replaced by AI
    futurism.com
But wait a second...Young WhippercrackerMeta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced sweeping layoffs of what he refers to as "low-performers"at his empire.According to a company-wide memo obtained by Bloomberg, the Facebook owner is cutting around five percent of its staff. And interestingly, the directive is already in tension with what Zuckerberg told podcaster Joe Roganlast weekabout how the company was looking to replace "midlevel engineers" with AI. Instead in a likely concession to AI just not quite being up to snuff yet he says employees "who aren't meeting expectations" will be replaced in order to "bring new people in" (emphasis on the "people," for any AI zealots.)"Ive decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low-performers faster," he wrote in the message, adding that terminated employees would be provided with "generous severance."Zuckerberg wrote that 2025 will be an "intense year" that will require the "strongest talent." But what exactly he means by that remains unclear as the billionaire makes sweeping changes to the company's operations. The CEO appears to be taking yet another page out of the playbook of X-former-Twitter owner Elon Musk, who has long led his companies with an iron fist demanding in 2022 that Twitter staff be "extremely hardcore" or risk immediate termination, for instance.Race to the BottomZuckerberg already raised eyebrows this month by giving up the pretense of serious content moderation on his sites. Earlier this month, he introduced new measures that would allow hate speech and misinformation to proliferate unchecked on the company's platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. The straightforward reading is that it was a thinly veiled attempt by Zuckerberg to get in the good graces of president-elect Donald Trump, who has formed a tight relationship with Musk and will be sworn in next week (Trump previously threatened to imprison Zuckerberg, which may also be weighing on the founder's mind.)How exactly Meta's latest efforts to weed out "low-performers" fits into the ongoing groveling remains to be seen. It's not just Meta, either; tech companies across the board are looking to tighten up their operations. Microsoft is also targeting underperforming employees as part of major headcount reductions across the company.During his chat with Rogan last week, Zuckerberg also whined that companies were being "culturally neutered" by purportedly distancing themselves from "masculine energy."Could his latest attempt to push out "low-performers" be symptomatic of his deranged desire to inject some machismo into Meta? Judging by the company's willingness to throw out the rulebook and double down on Musk-inspired meritocracy, anything seems possible.Share This Article
