• Metas new AI model can translate speech from more than 100 languages
    www.technologyreview.com
Meta has released a new AI model that can translate speech from 101 different languages. It represents a step toward real-time, simultaneous interpretation, where words are translated as soon as they come out of someones mouth. Typically, translation models for speech use a multistep approach. First they translate speech into text. Then they translate that text into text in another language. Finally, that translated text is turned into speech in the new language. This method can be inefficient, and at each step, errors and mistranslations can creep in. But Metas new model, called SeamlessM4T, enables more direct translation from speech in one language to speech in another. The model is described in a paper published today in Nature. Seamless can translate text with 23% more accuracy than the top existing models. And although another model, Googles AudioPaLM, can technically translate more languages113 of them, versus 101 for Seamlessit can translate them only into English. SeamlessM4T can translate into 36 other languages. The key is a process called parallel data mining, which finds instances when the sound in a video or audio matches a subtitle in another language from crawled web data. The model learned to associate those sounds in one language with the matching pieces of text in another. This opened up a whole new trove of examples of translations for their model. Meta has done a great job having a breadth of different things they support, like text-to-speech, speech-to-text, even automatic speech recognition, says Chetan Jaiswal, a professor of computer science at Quinnipiac University, who was not involved in the research. The mere number of languages they are supporting is a tremendous achievement. Human translators are still a vital part of the translation process, the researchers say in the paper, because they can grapple with diverse cultural contexts and make sure the same meaning is conveyed from one language into another. This step is important, says Lynne Bowker of the University of Ottawas School of Translation & Interpretation, who didnt work on Seamless. Languages are a reflection of cultures, and cultures have their own ways of knowing things, she says. When it comes to applications like medicine or law, machine translations need to be thoroughly checked by a human, she says. If not, misunderstandings can result. For example, when Google Translate was used to translate public health information about the covid-19 vaccine from the Virginia Department of Health in January 2021, it translated not mandatory in English into not necessary in Spanish, changing the whole meaning of the message. AI models have much more examples to train on in some languages than others. This means current speech-to-speech models may be able to translate a language like Greek into English, where there may be many examples, but cannot translate from Swahili to Greek. The team behind Seamless aimed to solve this problem by pre-training the model on millions of hours of spoken audio in different languages. This pre-training allowed it to recognize general patterns in language, making it easier to process less widely spoken languages because it already had some baseline for what spoken language is supposed to sound like. The system is open-source, which the researchers hope will encourage others to build upon its current capabilities. But some are skeptical of how useful it may be compared with available alternatives. Googles translation model is not as open-source as Seamless, but its way more responsive and fast, and it doesnt cost anything as an academic, says Jaiswal. The most exciting thing about Metas system is that it points to the possibility of instant interpretation across languages in the not-too-distant futurelike the Babel fish in Douglas Adams cult novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. SeamlessM4T is faster than existing models but still not instant. That said, Meta claims to have a newer version of Seamless thats as fast as human interpreters. While having this kind of delayed translation is okay and useful, I think simultaneous translation will be even more useful, says Kenny Zhu, director of the Arlington Computational Linguistics Lab at the University of Texas at Arlington, who is not affiliated with the new research.

  • I'm a lifelong skier. There are 6 mistakes I always see beginners make on the slopes.
    www.businessinsider.com
I'm an experienced skier who has been to more than a dozen ski resorts around the world.I often see beginners make mistakes like holding up lines, tailgating, and zooming down slopes.Wearing proper gear and being aware of your surroundings can enhance your skiing experience. As an unathletic kid, I dreaded "going skiing" because it really meant slogging through ski school while my parents hit the slopes.I started ski school before I started actual school, and for years, I was much better in the classroom than on the slopes. Now, as a (much more athletic) adult skier with years of experience, I've been lucky enough to travel beyond my home base in Lake Tahoeski resorts in Utah, Colorado, the Canadian Rockies, and the French Alps.Ski resorts have an etiquette system that can be difficult to grasp, and I've seen beginners make the same mistakes over and over, no matter where I am.If you're a newcomer at a ski resort but you don't want to seem like one, here are some mistakes to avoid:Holding up the lineIf you're traveling in a group, wait until everyone is present before you all enter the chairlift line together. Don't try to save a spot for your friend it's rude to other parties who are ready to get on the lift.If you need to make boot or gear adjustments, do these before you get in line. Don't block the line's entrance. At most resorts, lift lines funnel from many lanes into one main artery that feeds the chairlift. If there's no lift operator queueing groups, you have to merge lanes by alternating groups. Be mindful of when it's your turn and when you should let someone else go ahead.TailgatingIt's annoying when someone steps on the back of your shoe while you're walking. However, it's even worse when someone does that to you while you have big metal slats hooked to your 8-pound boots. When you're queueing up for the lift, leave just enough space between the tips of your skis and the next person's.You wouldn't drive bumper-to-bumper, and you don't need to ski like that either. Don't ski too close to the person ahead of you. Andrew Bret Wallis/Getty Images Poorly planning your dismount from the liftGood lift etiquette continues at the top of the hill on the dismount.Coordinate with others on your chair to figure out which direction you're going when you get off. This can help you avoid a collision if you need to cross paths with another person on your chair.Once you get off the chair, keep moving so the people behind you have a clear runway to exit. Not staying in your laneOnce you advance past beginner techniques like "pizza" and "french fry," you need to make more parallel turns to ski down a hill safely.Avoid zooming straight down the trail, which is how you can lose control. On busier trails, it's safest to make your turns in a chosen section of the slope. Stick to one side of the trail rather than using its entire width to leave enough room for other skiers.Picking a bad mid-mountain rest stopWhatever you do, don't stop in the middle of the trail that's like parking in the center lane of a highway.Just like you would on a freeway, pull onto the shoulder instead. When you know you need to hit a stop, get to the side of the trail so the other skiers won't have to swerve around you. Then, when you're ready to get back on the slopes, look uphill for anyone making their way down toward you. I usually wait for a break in the traffic when there are very few skiers uphill of me before I hop back on the trail. In general, downhill skiers have the right of way because they can't see you coming behind them. It's your responsibility as the uphill skier to ensure you won't crash into them. Not wearing the right outfit and gearThere are no fashion faux pas in skiing, but I would caution against those tight designer ski suits some people like to wear. They feel impractical for a sport that involves a fair amount of falling and bending over.On the slopes, you should also wear bright colors and avoid wearing white. This can help other skiers see you coming, thus avoiding unnecessary collisions.I also swear by wearing helmets. Most of the times I've taken bad falls have been on flat ground it's easy for even the most experienced skier to catch an edge and lose their balance.

  • No Pokmon games planned for Nintendo Switch 2 this year says insider
    metro.co.uk
Pokmon Legends: Z-A might not be the evolution were hoping for (Nintendo)An upcoming Pokmon showcase will apparently only feature games made for the original Nintendo Switch, including Pokmon Legends: Z-A.One of the only confirmed Switch games scheduled for 2025 is spin-off Pokmon Legends: Z-A, although nothing has been seen of the title since it was announced in February last year.As it was revealed on Pokmon Day, on February 27, theres a strong chance itll pop again during the expected Pokmon Presents showcase on the same day in 2025.With Nintendos next console expected to be revealed this month, many expected Switch 2 software to be shown during the Pokmon Presents. An insider, however, has claimed this wont be the case.Speaking on Giant Bombs Game Mess Mornings podcast, Jeff Grubb, who is usually reliable when it comes to gaming leaks, claims he has heard that all the games in the upcoming showcase will be positioned as Switch 1 titles. They will work on Switch 2, he added, but there wont be anything that is obviously made for Switch 2, which is normal for The Pokmon Company. If true, this suggests Pokmon Legends: Z-A will not be the cross-platform Pokmon game many were hoping for.Its predecessor, Pokmon Legends: Arceus, suffered from major performance issues, as did mainline entries Pokmon Scarlet and Violet. While theres a chance Pokmon Legends: Z-A has been perfectly optimised for the current Switch (developer Game Freak has been staffing up recently), many fans were hoping the inevitable power boost from the Switch 2 would also aid the game.If it is built with the original Switch in mind, a Switch 2 performance patch might still be able to help with any potential issues but well have to wait and see how Nintendo handles its backwards compatibility between the two systems, once the console is revealed. We still know little about Pokmon Legends: Z-A, aside from it being set in Lumiose City in the Kalos region, which originates from Pokmon X and Y. A specific release date hasnt been announced, but a leaked listing on Amazon suggested it could launch on August 15, 2025.While nothing has been confirmed when it comes to Switch 2 games, many expect Metroid Prime 4: Beyond to be a cross-gen title, especially given how good the graphics look in the trailer.More TrendingNintendo has not confirmed anything to that effect though and insiders have warned that the initial reveal of the console wont delve too deeply into the games line-up. • Lina Khans FTC Is Suing John Deere to Break Its Repair Monopoly
    gizmodo.com
By Matthew Gault Published January 15, 2025 | Comments (0) | The John Deere autonomous orchard tractor during a Deere & Co. automation technology preview event in Gilroy, California, US, on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024. David Paul Morris/Bloomberg via Getty Images For years John Deere has made it hard for farmers to fix their equipment. Today the Federal Trade Commission announced its going to sue to try to stop them. The FTC and the Attorneys General of the states of Illinois and Minnesota are suing John Deere over unfair business practices related to repair. According to the complaint, Deere has unlawfully restricted farmers from fixing their own farm equipment. Under the scheme, farmers had to return tractors to John Deere-authorized dealerships to make official repairs. Illegal repair restrictions can be devastating for farmers, who rely on affordable and timely repairs to harvest their crops and earn their income, FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a press release about the lawsuit. The FTCs action today seeks to ensure that farmers across America are free to repair their own equipment or use repair shops of their choicelowering costs, preventing ruinous delays, and promoting fair competition for independent repair shops. Legal action against John Deere has been brewing for years. Last Fall, the FTC announced it had begun an investigation into the company over its repair practices. Its been sued multiple times by farmers their advocates over the issue and has long promised it would make its machines easier to repair. It lied. The basic scheme is this: newer machines made by John Deere contain advanced computer systems that trip when any kind of work is done. Even if a farmer does a basic repair to a tractor, the computers lock the tractor from working again until an officially licensed repairman flips a software switch.Farmers have requested one thing for a long time: access to the manuals and tools that would allow them to repair their own equipment in a timely fashion. Through its limited distribution of its repair tools, Deere has been able to control and limit who can repair its agricultural equipment, allowing Deere to maintain a 100% market share and charge higher prices, via its network of authorized dealers, for all repairs that require the fully functional tool. the FTC said. This has driven up the cost of repairs for basic farm equipment, delayed harvests, and caused an explosion in the used farm equipment market as farmers look to buy machines manufactured before John Deere loaded them down with computers. The goal of the lawsuit is to force Deere to give farmers access to the same tools as the authorized repair shops, thereby making it possible for them to repair their own stuff.News of the lawsuit was greeted with universal acclaim from multiple groups that have been lobbying to force John Deere to make stuff easier to repair.Everyone, especially handy people including farmers, should be allowed to fix their own stuff. When farmers cant access the proprietary software tools they need to diagnose or complete repairs, that means they have to wait for an authorized technician before they can finish their work. The weather doesnt wait on a dealerships schedulea delay could mean the loss of a harvest. Not only might that bankrupt the farmer, it also raises food prices for everyone, Nathan Proctor, PIRGs Right to Repair Campaign Director, said in a statement. We shouldnt tolerate companies blocking repair. When you buy something, you should be able to do whatever you want with it, Proctor added. The FTCs enforcement action will help farmers, and everyone else who believes people should be able to fix their stuff. The FTC lawsuit joins the long list of aggressive actions the Commission has taken against corporate malfeasance under Khan. The Right to Repair was a key issue in the Biden White House and, through both executive orders and FTC lawsuits, D.C. has been able to shake loose several victories for consumers.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By AJ Dellinger Published January 14, 2025 Renee Dudley Published December 28, 2024 By AJ Dellinger Published December 17, 2024 By Todd Feathers Published December 12, 2024 By Matt Novak Published December 12, 2024 By Matt Novak Published December 4, 2024

Z.O.P. - Institute for Spatial Design, which publishes Outsider, Slovenia's leading architectural magazine since 2015, has been promoting sustainable building practices, including earth construction. In 2018, they invited Martin Rauch, an expert in rammed earth construction, to Ljubljana for a lecture. Inspired by his call to "make your hands dirty," Z.O.P.'s team, comprising architects, sociologists, and landscape architects, began hands-on experimentation with local materials in rural Slovenia. This collaborative approach has since brought together architects, writers, students, and the local community. Why Build with Earth? - There are several advantages to building with earth. It boasts the lowest carbon footprint of all building materials, is readily available (even as construction waste), and has excellent living properties, such as moisture regulation, heat accumulation, and the ability to bind harmful substances. These qualities make it a sustainable and healthy choice for creating affordable homes.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Building Community - Earth construction also fosters community. Over 150 people from diverse countriesincluding Slovenia, Hungary, Austria, Italy, and even Brazilhave participated in workshops, forging friendships and exploring how Earth can enhance public spaces. The shared process of building, learning, and playing together strengthens connections and inspires innovation. The Role of Play - Experimental construction operates on two levels: scientific and intuitive. While one focuses on refining earth mixtures and measuring properties, the other embraces creativity and exploration. Workshops draw inspiration from Johan Huizinga's Homo Ludens, which highlights play as a cultural foundation.
