  • NVIDIA Releases NIM Microservices to Safeguard Applications for Agentic AI
    blogs.nvidia.com
AI agents are poised to transform productivity for the worlds billion knowledge workers with knowledge robots that can accomplish a variety of tasks. To develop AI agents, enterprises need to address critical concerns like trust, safety, security and compliance.New NVIDIA NIM microservices for AI guardrails part of the NVIDIA NeMo Guardrails collection of software tools are portable, optimized inference microservices that help companies improve the safety, precision and scalability of their generative AI applications.Central to the orchestration of the microservices is NeMo Guardrails, part of the NVIDIA NeMo platform for curating, customizing and guardrailing AI. NeMo Guardrails helps developers integrate and manage AI guardrails in large language model (LLM) applications. Industry leaders Amdocs, Cerence AI and Lowes are among those using NeMo Guardrails to safeguard AI applications.Developers can use the NIM microservices to build more secure, trustworthy AI agents that provide safe, appropriate responses within context-specific guidelines and are bolstered against jailbreak attempts. Deployed in customer service across industries like automotive, finance, healthcare, manufacturing and retail, the agents can boost customer satisfaction and trust. One of the new microservices, built for moderating content safety, was trained using the Aegis Content Safety Dataset one of the highest-quality, human-annotated data sources in its category. Curated and owned by NVIDIA, the dataset is publicly available on Hugging Face and includes over 35,000 human-annotated data samples flagged for AI safety and jailbreak attempts to bypass system restrictions.NVIDIA NeMo Guardrails Keeps AI Agents on TrackAI is rapidly boosting productivity for a broad range of business processes. In customer service, its helping resolve customer issues up to 40% faster. However, scaling AI for customer service and other AI agents requires secure models that prevent harmful or inappropriate outputs and ensure the AI application behaves within defined parameters.NVIDIA has introduced three new NIM microservices for NeMo Guardrails that help AI agents operate at scale while maintaining controlled behavior:Content safety NIM microservice that safeguards AI against generating biased or harmful outputs, ensuring responses align with ethical standards.Topic control NIM microservice that keeps conversations focused on approved topics, avoiding digression or inappropriate content.Jailbreak detection NIM microservice that adds protection against jailbreak attempts, helping maintain AI integrity in adversarial scenarios.By applying multiple lightweight, specialized models as guardrails, developers can cover gaps that may occur when only more general global policies and protections exist as a one-size-fits-all approach doesnt properly secure and control complex agentic AI workflows.Small language models, like those in the NeMo Guardrails collection, offer lower latency and are designed to run efficiently, even in resource-constrained or distributed environments. This makes them ideal for scaling AI applications in industries such as healthcare, automotive and manufacturing, in locations like hospitals or warehouses.Industry Leaders and Partners Safeguard AI With NeMo GuardrailsNeMo Guardrails, available to the open-source community, helps developers orchestrate multiple AI software policies called rails to enhance LLM application security and control. blog.playstation.com
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the release of the Until Dawn game, and Im thrilled to share with you the world premiere of the trailer for Until Dawn the movie, coming to theaters.Play VideoPlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures have been working closely with director/producer David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation, Lights Out) and writer/producer Gary Dauberman (It, Annabelle series, The Nun series) to translate Until Dawn to the big screen. In making that transition, we wanted to honor the spirit of the Until Dawn game especially the idea of decisions with branching paths and deadly consequences while adapting it in a way that maximizes both the entertainment and terror for moviegoers.Though the movies story is set in the same world as the game, it was important to us that the movie wasnt just a retelling. Instead, the film will feature fresh characters in a new, original story. If youve played the game, you know not everything is what it seems. With the movie we wanted to keep the audience guessing until the end. We cant wait for fans to discover how the events of the movie connect to the Until Dawn game.Peter Stormare, whom you know as Dr. Hill in the game, is one of those key connecting links. The film will delve into his characters involvement in the events of the game, raising questions for fans to explore. Given Peters role spanning both projects, its only fitting he introduce the first Until Dawn movie trailer to the world:I have been lucky to be part of Until Dawn since the original, incredible, super terrifying game, and thats why Im so excited to be part of this film, because the whole thing is a love letter to horror, and it completely honors the spirit of the game. The movie is going to be full of fresh characters and victims in a brand-new story, loaded with twists. So whether youre a longtime fan or youre discovering it for the first time, get ready for Until Dawn like youve never seen it before. Peter StormareNow, enjoy the world premiere of the trailer, and keep checking back, as there will be plenty more updates between now and when Until Dawn hits theaters later this year.

  • The years biggest horror-movie conversation piece is now streaming
    www.polygon.com
Plenty of movies come with enough ambiguity to invite discussion, debate, and spirited interpretation, but over the course of the past year or so, few of them have prompted as much conversation as Pascal Plantes Red Rooms. And in the horror genre in particular, nothings even come particularly close. Plantes thriller, following one womans obsession with an accused serial killer, is the rare film that makes ambiguity a central point, while still delivering a satisfying, engaging story. It gives the sense that Plante is entirely in control of his narrative but doesnt want to control what people think about it. The movie had a long rollout throughout 2023 and 2024, via a lengthy festival run, limited theatrical release, and VOD launch. But now that Red Rooms has hit streaming services via Shudder and AMC Plus, the conversation around it is likely to keep expanding and intensifying.Red Rooms stars Juliette Garipy as Kelly-Anne, a successful Montreal fashion model who introduces herself by silently walking into a courtroom for the opening arguments in the trial of Ludovic Chevalier (Maxwell McCabe-Lokos), accused of kidnapping and murdering three teenagers. The facts in the case of The Demon of Rosemont are graphic and horrific, and his defense attorneys opening arguments arent convincing they amount to Maybe someone hacked Ludovics computer and put snuff films on it? You cant prove they didnt! But the evidence itself isnt concrete. The perpetrator in the two digital files on Ludovics computer recording the torture, mutilation, sexual assault, and deaths of two of the girls is masked at all times. No file of the third girls murder has been found. Its a sensationalistic case, full of references to the Dark Web and so-called red rooms where streamers kill people for an audience. The prosecutor and her expert witnesses hint about a secret underground world where such horrors are common. But what does all this have to do with the blank-faced fashion model who shows up to the proceedings every day, sleeping in an alley near the courtroom to make sure shes in line for admission early every morning? Plante spends the entire movie teasing that out, one unsettling development at a time.Whats fascinating about Kelly-Anne throughout the trial, and her increasingly calm but unnerving behavior whenever she leaves the courthouse, is how little she fits into any of the expected tropes or profiles for a character in her position. Red Rooms biggest mystery isnt whether Ludovic is guilty (though Plante keeps that question for the end as well), its who Kelly-Anne really is and what she wants. Does she have a personal connection to one of the victims, or to Ludovic? Is she just one of those unfortunate groupies who flock to serial killers? Given her clear technological prowess, is she planning (or has she already committed) similar crimes herself? The deliberate, clinical procedural aspects of Red Rooms leaves conscious space for viewers to speculate about where its all going, right up to a moment of mesmerizing shock. But the reason the movie has spurred so much conversation is because there are so many ways to read what happens next, and so much nuance and mystery around Kelly-Annes actions and choices. The film has two clear tracks what she does, which is unambiguous and leads to the storys clear conclusion, and why she does it, which has sparked a lot of energetic conversation. (The online version has mostly been of the Its obvious that X is true! No, its absolutely obvious that Y is true instead! variety. But what are you going to do, its the internet.) Parsing out exactly what you think, preferably with someone whose tastes and opinions you trust, is half the draw of this movie. The other half is Plantes meticulous execution. In spite of the grotesque details of the Demons crimes, Red Rooms isnt a gory movie, and it isnt a conventional horror movie, full of sudden scares and shocks. Its a chilly, precise film, shot with sharp lighting and precise framing thats drawn comparisons to Stanley Kubricks work. (Albeit without the elevator full of blood that gives The Shining one of its biggest set-pieces.) Garipy gives Kelly-Anne a flat affect that some have interpreted as a sign of neuroatypicality, and others as an expression of her singular obsession with the case. Put together, that approach keeps viewers at an emotional distance in spite of the movies charged emotional content, and only gradually lets them in as new, more colorful characters complicate the story.Kelly-Anne is drawn without the usual sense of horror-movie protagonist sympathy for much of the movie, shes a function rather than a hero, a seeming cipher who can only be analyzed through action. Plante and Garipy never let the audience identify with her solely because of charisma theyre forced to consider each and every one of her actions as part of the puzzle, and land on their own perspectives, both about why she pursues her particular course of action and how viewers should feel about it. In a Reddit AMA, viewers asked a lot of questions about her, and Plante gave some hints, but made it clear that he wants people to interpret her for themselves. And that invitation to interpretation turns out to be as satisfying as the movies queasy shocks and luring mysteries. Some horror movies leave the audience with a sense of shock and catharsis that hits hard, then fades quickly. Red Rooms lingers. Its a strange but appealingly distinctive project a movie thats best experienced not just in the moment of viewing, but for days or weeks of thoughtful unraveling afterward.Red Rooms is now streaming on Shudder and AMC Plus, and is available for online rental or purchase on Amazon, Fandango, and similar digital platforms.

  • India Mahdavis Iconic Bishop Declares Checkmate on 25 Years of Design History
    design-milk.com
What started as a humble bar stool crafted for one of New Yorks most exclusive clubs, APT, in 1999 has grown into a design icon, celebrated over 25 years through reimagined iterations, museum showcases, and countless collaborations. That design is the Bishop, a hallmark creation by the renowned Iranian-French architect and designer India Mahdavi. To mark the Bishops 25th anniversary, Mahdavi has dedicated the 17th edition of Project Room, her ongoing series of exhibitions and installations spotlighting design from around the world, to this versatile masterpiece. Its fitting that the Bishop draws it name from a chess piece. When I set out to design a bar stool, it was because I wanted to create something that didnt yet exist a sculptural piece that, when grouped together, would evoke the look of a chess set. The bishop on a chessboard became my inspiration, Mahdavi shares. However, what some may not know is that the original design evolved before becoming the iconic Bishop we recognize today. The original Bishop had a strong graphic presence but felt too specific for broader use, so I reimagined it as a versatile piece a hybrid between a stool and a side table. Later on, while working on a hospitality project in Mexico City, Mahdavi discovered the tactile yet visually warm properties of ceramics. This led her to create her first ceramic edition of the Bishop piece.Mahdavis Project Room #17, Bishop: 25 Years, is a beautiful retrospective that showcases the designs evolution over the years. Since its inception, the Bishop has transformed into various materials, scales, and functions. Over its 25-year history, it has spawned a family of designs, including the Baby Bishop stool and the Cocktail table. The Peanut unites two Bishops into a single piece, while the COD (Complment dObjet Direct) is a side table version. Variations of the design have earned permanent placements in museum collections: the Bishop Or resides at the Muse des Arts Dcoratifs in Paris, while the Bishop Primadonna is housed at the Centre Georges Pompidou. There are even salt and pepper shaker versions. To further celebrate this milestone, Mahdvai has partnered with Palomas, a fine chocolatier in Lyon, to create edible versions of the Bishop. Scaled down to bite-sized forms, Bishops are crafted from rich Peruvian dark chocolate and feature six hidden Iranian pistachios in each piece. Presented in a mauve tray a nod to Iranian miniaturist Reza Abbassis signature color, the chocolates come in packaging adorned with Mahdavis Criss Cross pattern, a modern interpretation of the classic tartan motif. With its timeless design and playful reiterations, the Bishop continues to captivate and inspire, proving great design knows no bounds. Whether showcased in museums, repurposed in new forms, or even reimagined as edible art, the Bishop stands as a testament to Mahdavis enduring work and her ability to blend functionality with artistic expression. To learn more about the Bishops history, visit india-mahdavi.com.Exhibition photography by Thierry Depagne.

  • You Can Now Schedule Recurring Tasks and Reminders With ChatGPT
    lifehacker.com
ChatGPT is taking a big step towards becoming your go-to digital assistant with its new Tasks feature. With it, you can set reminders and recurring tasks with the bot. Mind you, this won't replace your Reminders app: The Tasks feature is currently only in beta, and is available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users on iOS, Android, macOS, or on the web. OpenAI also plans to release this feature to everyone with a free ChatGPT account, when the stable release rolls out. What can you do using ChatGPT Tasks?ChatGPT Tasks can be used to set simple reminders, like you'd ask Google Assistant or Siri, and the ChatGPT app will send you a notification with the reminder in question. Credit: Khamosh Pathak But what's more interesting are the recurring tasks. You can do some prompt engineering and ask ChatGPT to do tasks for you at a particular time every day, or once a week, and it will perform those actions for you. And because it can trigger any prompt at a given time, you can ask it to do things like summarize the day's news (pulling from the open web using ChatGPT Search), create a new 10-minute workout each day, or give you a motivational quote every morning. How to create recurring tasks in ChatGPTYou can create a new task from any conversation, but it might be better to create a new conversation for this. When you're in the conversation view, click the ChatGPT model option at the top, and switch to GPT-4o with scheduled tasks option. Credit: Khamosh Pathak Write out your reminder or a recurring task. In my testing, I found that this works best when your prompts are detailed. Credit: Khamosh Pathak Then, ChatGPT will show you a new task box. You can click on the task box to expand it. Credit: Khamosh Pathak Here you can easily change the prompt, time, date and frequency. If you want to pause a task, click the three-dotted Menu button and choose Pause. Credit: Khamosh Pathak Now, just wait. When the time is up, you'll get a notification from ChatGPT (this works best if you're using the ChatGPT app on your Mac or smartphone), and when you select the notification, ChatGPT's response will be ready. You'll even get an email from OpenAI confirming the task was completed. Credit: Khamosh Pathak To view and manage all your tasks, select the Profile icon from the ChatGPT website or app, and choose the Tasks option. This is where all your tasks will be listed. You can easily edit, pause or delete tasks from here.If you're looking for some inspiration for how to use ChatGPT Tasks in your own life, here are some of the examples you might want to try:Create a new workout routine every morningGenerate a new lesson for studying a languageSchedule mindful breaks from technology or work, and get suggestions on what to do insteadWake up every day with a weather report, motivational quote, and top news of the day, all in one messageCheck stock prices every morning, or at different times throughout the dayDon't trust ChatGPT Tasks completelyWhile this feature can be convenient, and is a step towards an AI agent future, AI still hallucinates, and can misinterpret commands as well. As such, you should be vigilant when using ChatGPT Tasks, and double-check outputs before taking them at face value. As always, be careful before assigning an important task to the bot.

  • The Nintendo Switch 2 has been announced, here's everything we know
    www.engadget.com
As the world turns, so do the console generations. The Nintendo Switch is over seven years old, so its due for a refresh. Nintendo Switch 2 rumors have been swirling for years, but now we have some signs of life. The company officially revealed the sequel to its most successful home console ever in a brief trailer on January 16.The Switch 2 looks functionally very similar to the original system, albeit with a larger display, magnetic Joy-Cons and a sleeker design. The company also reaffirmed that the upcoming console will be backwards compatible with Switch games. While the reveal did confirm some rumors and have a few interesting details for those who were paying close attention, Nintendo is still largely keeping its cards close to its chest. We'll have to wait until a special Nintendo Direct on April 2 for all the juicy information. Annoyingly, that date is a Wednesday and not a Two-sday.The Nintendo Switch 2 was announced on January 16The rumor mill had heavily suggested that Nintendo would pull back the curtain on the Switch 2 on January 16, and that turned out to be the case. The company hasn't changed the core form factor. It's a portable console with detachable Joy-Cons. The Switch 2 can be placed in a dock for big-screen gaming. There are some significant differences from the original console, however. The most obvious one is that the next-gen Joy-Cons will no longer slide into place mechanically. Instead, they'll attach to the main unit magnetically. There is a small connector that's likely used to charge the controllers and perhaps remove the need to link them via Bluetooth. It's unclear at this point if Joy-Cons from the original system will be compatible with the Switch 2.One other big (and very welcome) change is the addition of a second USB-C port on the top of the device. That should make it much easier to plug in accessories while the Switch 2 is docked. It's great to see that Nintendo has kept the headphone jack as well. Let's just hope that Bluetooth headphone support is live from the jump this time and Nintendo doesn't leave everyone waiting four yearsfor that feature. The kickstand is getting an upgrade as well. As with the Switch OLED, it spans the length of the console. But, according to the trailer, this one looks fully adjustable, so you can tweak the viewing angle to one that works for you. When will the Nintendo Switch 2 come out?2025. That's all we know for sure at this point. It's highly unlikely that Nintendo will release the console before the dedicated Direct on April 2, and not only because that's at the start of Nintendo's next financial year. However, accessory manufacturer Genki, which has been a major source of leaks in recent months, claims the console will be released in April. In any case, we should learn the release date during the April 2 Direct if we haven't already by then. When can I try the Nintendo Switch 2?Nintendo is planning a worldwide roadshow to let gamers go hands-on with the console. These events start in New York and Paris on April 3-6, with others taking place throughout the following two months. That lends credence to some suggestions that Nintendo will release the Switch 2 in June.Ticket registration for the Switch 2 Experience events in the US (in New York, Los Angeles and Paris) starts on January 17 at 3PM ET and will remain open until January 26. A Nintendo Account is required to sign up. Nintendo will randomly select the recipients of the free tickets. The full list of Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events is as follows:North America:New York, April 4-6, 2025Los Angeles, April 11-13, 2025Dallas, April 25-27, 2025Toronto, April 25-27, 2025Europe:Paris, April 4-6, 2025London, April 11-13, 2025Milan, April 25-27, 2025Berlin, April 25-27, 2025Madrid, May 9-11, 2025Amsterdam, May 9-11, 2025Oceania:Melbourne, May 10-11, 2025Asia:Tokyo (Makuhari), April 26-27, 2025Seoul, May 31-June 1, 2025Hong Kong, To be announcedTaipei, To be announcedWill the Nintendo Switch 2 have some weirdness?Everything we've seen and so far about this console has been fairly, well, traditional. It looks like the original Switch, but better. That's awesome, but will there be any of that unpredictable Nintendo magic? Maybe! There are two puzzling additions that folks can't make hide nor hair of.Genki, the accessories manufacturer, just published a landing page for their Nintendo Switch 2 accessories. This landing page features a video that includes a very detailed look at a Switch 2 mockup. pic.twitter.com/Db7RSk4YlQ Bob Wulff (@BobWulff) January 8, 2025 Keen eyes will have noticed a new button on the bottom of the right Joy-Con. It it not yet clear what this does. Could it initiate voice chat during gameplay? Could it calibrate the controllers? Could it create a room-sized hologram of Bowser in your living room? We'll have to wait and see.Now onto the updated Joy-Cons. There appears to be a new sensor on the connecting side of each controller. It looks a whole lot like an optical sensor, which is what a computer mouse uses. This has led to speculation that players will be able to flip the Joy-Con over and use it like a mouse. Of note: the trailer shows the Joy-Cons moving along a flat surface, connector side down and looking suspiciously like a mouse.Genki reveal isnt a mockup, its straight up just the Switch 2, optical sensor is literally flashing in this shot @Stealth40k #Switch2 pic.twitter.com/COeLsonqMd Ash (@Ashinarii) January 8, 2025 But why would anyone even want this? I can think of three words. New Mario Paint. Is the Nintendo Switch 2 backwards compatible? The company confirmed in November 2024 that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be backwards compatible. It will also feature access to Nintendo Online, so users will be able to play all of those old retro titles. In the initial Nintendo Switch 2 press release, Nintendo reiterated that physical and digital Switch games will work on the new system. However, it noted that "certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2." More details about which games those are will be revealed later. What about specs? The rumors regarding specs are all over the place, so its tough to pin down. We know one thing for sure: Itll be more powerful than the ancient Switch hardware, which was already antiquated back in 2017. One analyst allegedly got a hold of a spec sheet from the Korean United Daily News that said the Switch 2 would boast an eight-core Cortex-A78AE processor, 8GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal eMMC storage. This tracks for me, as these specs are about as underpowered in 2024 as the original Switch was in 2017. However, some reports do indicate that the console will include 12GB of RAM.Another source suggests that the eight-core CPU will be packaged inside an NVIDIA-produced Tegra239 SoC (system on a chip). Given the current Switch runs on an NVIDIA chip, that makes a lot of sense. The CPU will be more powerful, but it's the Switch 2's new GPU that will be a major differentiator. It's all-but-confirmed that the Switch 2 will support DLSS, NVIDIA's "deep learning supersampling" upscaling tech, which would allow the console to render games at a low resolution internally while outputting a high-resolution image. (Fun fact: We actually wrote about how perfect DLSS was for the Nintendo Switch 2 when the technology was announced alongside the RTX 20 series back in 2018.)There are still questions about the Switch 2 and DLSS: Will the system support newer DLSS features like frame generation? Will existing games be automatically tidied up by NVIDIA's algorithm? Regardless of the exact implementation, DLSS upscaling will be a huge leap over the rudimentary techniques available to Nintendo Switch developers. As for the display, there are many conflicting rumors. Early reports from solid sources suggested the Switch 2 would have an 8-inch display LCD display. The Switch 2's display certainly looks larger than that of the original Switch in a side-by-side comparison in the reveal trailer. Some analysts have suggested this would be an OLED screen, while others have said it would be a Mini-LED display. A Mini-LED display is basically an LCD display that has a backlight made of (surprise!) mini-LEDs rather than edge lighting. This allows for local dimming, making the blacks more black. Im hedging my bets here. I think itll be a standard LCD, to cut costs, with an OLED or Mini-LED model coming later down the line. However, Mini-LED screens are slightly cheaper than OLED displays, so thats certainly a possibility at launch. As for resolution, recent reporting suggests that the console will output 1080p in handheld and 4K when docked. That's much better than the OG Switch. Meanwhile, it's not yet clear if the Switch 2 will deliver performance or visual upgrades to original Switch games. How much will the Nintendo Switch 2 cost?We don't have too much information regarding price but we do have plenty of history to work with. The original Nintendo Switch launched at $300, which is pretty much the "magic number" when it comes to Nintendo console releases in recent years. The Wii U also came in at $300.However, there are plenty of rumors circulating that Nintendo could be upping the asking price for the Switch 2. Numerous outlets have reported it'll be $400, or potentially even more expensive. However, the same analysts who say the console will be $400 were also fairly certain it would be out by the end of 2024 and, well, that didn't happen.Dipping back into history, there is some precedence for a price uptick. The GameCube was $200 and the Wii was $250. The Wii U and Switch increased to $300 and, well, numbers like to go up. A $400 price tag would make it nearly as expensive as a PS5 and Xbox Series X. That would also put it at the same price as the 256GB LCD Steam Deck.Again, we should get confirmation of the price during the April 2 Nintendo Direct.Do we know about any launch games? Not so much. The reveal trailer offered a peek at a new Mario Kart game. Nintendo released Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U over a decade ago and it's been milking that cash cow ever since, having sold more than 64 million copies of the game across that console and the Switch. It's definitely time for a new entry! It's certainly been a long time since weve gotten a proper 3D Mario adventure as well, so a new one could be a launch title. That would be one heck of a system seller. Other than that, your guess is as good as mine. Past as prologue, we can expect something from Ubisoft and an off-the-wall title like 1-2-Switch.If theres a gimmick or hook involved with the console, well also get a game that takes advantage of that. A dual release of Metroid Prime 4, just like Breath of the Wild and Twilight Princess before that, is also a possibility. It's all but nailed on that we'll learn much more about the Switch 2 launch lineup during the April 2 Nintendo Direct. You'll definitely want to set your Alarmo for that one. That's everything we know about the Nintendo Switch 2 today. We'll update this article with rumors we trust and with information we gather directly from sources. President Joe Biden issued an executive order on Thursday aimed at strengthening the nations cybersecurity and making it easier to go after foreign adversaries or hacking groups that try to compromise U.S. internet and telecommunication systems.Provisions in the order call for the development of minimum cybersecurity standards for government technology contractors and require that contractors submit evidence that theyre complying with the rules. They also are aimed at making it easier for U.S. authorities to sanction foreign governments that target the U.S. with cyberattacksa change that comes after several recent hacking incidents linked to China, Iran, Russia, and North Korea. Among other changes, the order allows sanctions to be imposed on foreign hackers who target hospitals or other organizations with ransomware. The order also requires federal agencies to improve cybersecurity to protect against the threat posed by powerful quantum computers, which cyber experts say could be used to easily break into many systems. Its an issue that could have direct national security implications if a foreign adversary builds a computer sophisticated enough to break American codes. The White House issued the order just days before Biden, a Democrat, leaves office. Republican President-elect Donald Trumps administration could rescind the policy in favor of its own proposals. But deputy national security adviser Anne Neuberger said the orders twin goalsstrengthening cybersecurity and punishing those responsible for cyberattacksshould win bipartisan support. The order is intended to show that America means business when it comes to protecting our businesses and our citizens, Neuberger said while briefing reporters on the new policies. The policies build on several earlier actions by the Biden administration intended to boost defenses against cyber intrusionswhether they target the government, critical infrastructure like ports or power plants, U.S. businesses, or individual users.Earlier this month, the White House announced a labeling program designed to help consumers pick smart devices that are more resistant to hacking. Under the cyber trust mark program, manufacturers of internet-connected devices can attach the label to let buyers know the product meets federal cybersecurity standards.Trump has not announced his picks for top national cybersecurity positions. John Ratcliffe, Trumps nominee to be CIA director, said Wednesday during his Senate confirmation hearing that its essential the U.S. improve its defensive and offensive cyber capabilities to keep up with China and other adversaries. We have the best code makers and code breakers in the world, Ratcliffe said of American spy agencies. But if China gets to quantum computing before we do, thats a real problem.David Klepper, Associated Press
