The Savilahti Sports and Events Centre, located on Neulamki Hill in the developing Savilahti district of Kuopio, Finland, transforms a former Finnish Defence Forces depot into a versatile multi-purpose facility. The centre serves as a connection between a new residential area and the heart of the district, acting as a gateway to the adjacent park and local amenities. Designed to accommodate diverse user groupsincluding schoolchildren, students, sports clubs, and individual citizensthe centre is also a versatile venue for large-scale events such as concerts, seminars, tournaments, and major league or international sports matches. In addition, it functions as a shared civic shelter for nearly 7,000 people, ensuring safety and preparedness for the district.Save this picture!Save this picture! The building stands out in the valley landscape, although most of the centre is carved into the Neulamki bedrock. Its key feature, the 550 m glass- and metal-clad entrance building, houses the reception, cafeteria, and offices. It serves as the gateway to the sports and events centre, concealing escape routes and ventilation systems integrated into the tunnels behind. The building's facade reflects the district's overarching public art theme "Light", and is integrated with a rock face installation by artists Pasi Rauhala and Jaakko Niemel. The faade's concave aluminium panelling, with its custom perforation pattern, is finished in an earthy tone that echoes the warm hues of the surrounding rock. This design creates a dual effect: the pavilion blends seamlessly into its natural setting while asserting a presence as a public building.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Inside, the journey unfolds from the caf, where a dark-toned interior frames an unobstructed view of the surrounding nature. Moving towards the sports facilities, visitors pass through a deep blue, cave-like space that separates the outside world from the interiors carved into the rock. In the spatial hierarchy, the public and main areas are defined by vibrant colours, while the support spaces are left in raw, grey concrete, reinforcing their utilitarian role. The unique nature of the project, the complexities of underground construction and the unexpectedly difficult conditions caused by rock fractures called for recognition and a particular approach.Save this picture!Save this picture! The tunnels of the former army depot were expanded to create a large, unified space inside the rock. Now this void houses Hall 1, which accommodates events for up to 2,500 visitors, and Hall 2, which includes three fitness studios and a gym spread across two floors. Changing rooms and technical facilities are centrally located on three levels. From the outset, a sense of community was one of the leading themes driving the design. The project name Luola (Finnish for "cave") reflects the long history of underground spaces as places where people gather and engage in a variety of communal activities.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Kuopio, FinlandLocation to be used only as a reference. • How important are updates, actually?
    www.popsci.com
ShareWe may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs. Learn more Do you ignore pop-ups on your phone, computer, and other devices telling you about an update? Youre not alonethey can be a bit overwhelming. At the same time, though, updates are important.Weve talked about how to make sure no one is spying on your computer and why antivirus is not enough. I, and most experts, recommend that you also install updates to keep your computer secure and running well. But why? The following is my attempt to explain why updates are so important in plain English so that you can make a more informed decision.Note that updates generally come with update notes. Its always worth reading through these notes if youre unsure whether you want to install an update or not. Often these updates mention a combination of three things: security patches, bug fixes, and new features. Heres why all of these are important.Updates provide security patchesThe biggest reason not to ignore updates is security patches. All software has bugs, which is just a cutesy name for problems in the code. Some of these bugs can be used to gain access to a computer or files on the computer without permission. Hackers are constantly looking for new bugs to take advantage of; the companies that make software are constantly fixing these bugs. When a bug known to cause security problems is found and fixed this takes the form of a Security Update. It is generally a good idea to install such updates as your computerand the information on itwill be vulnerable if you dont.Vulnerabilities are a big deal, especially on devices with access to bank accounts or financial records. Installing an update might seem annoying but I promise you: its less annoying than dealing with a hack.Think of it this way: imagine if you knew that thieves in your area had access to a master key that could open all doors made before 2018. Would you change your locks? Installing a security update is pretty similar, and a lot easier, than doing that.Updates can fix stability problemsBugs dont just cause security vulnerabilitiesthey can also cause annoying problems. Weve all had applications that crash, or run slowly, and it can feel mysterious. This is usually the result of a bug.Why do bugs sometimes appear out of nowhere? Sometimes this happens because something else changed on your computer. For example: If Microsoft or Apple updates your operating system it might cause problems for the application youre using, resulting in crashes. In other cases a bug may have been there all along but was just recently noticed.Updates are the main way the people who make software fix such bugs. Sometimes the update notes will mention a specific bug, which is good to note if it refers to a problem youve been having. Sometimes the notes will say something like general bug fixesthis is less helpful but generally means the software will crash less.Updates offer new featuresFor most people, the funnest reason to install an update is new features.Okay, not everyone thinks new features are fun. I, being a gigantic weirdo, love seeing what new features are added to my computers and mobile devices with each operating system update. You dont need to reach that level of nerdy to appreciate that updates sometimes offer useful new tools. You might not like all of themI, personally, could do without the current trend of bundling AI tools with everything before theyre ready. But the fact remains that if you want the latest features on your device youre going to need to install updates.I could go on about the reasons to update software and operating systems. For example: Sometimes, to get the latest version of a particular application, you need to already be using the latest operating system. For the most part, though, the main three reasons for installing an update are security, stability, and new features. So please update and stop ignoring those reminders.

  • Bing Isnt Tricking People Into Thinking Theyre Using Google Anymore
    lifehacker.com
In well over a decade of journalism, I've seen a fair amount of copied designs, but I've never seen anything as blatant as Bing's recently abandoned attempt to hoodwink people into believing they were actually using Google. Since time immemorial, people have used a system's default apps to look for better alternatives, and to switch to those instead. Back in the day, Internet Explorer was often used to download Firefox or Chrome, before being forgotten forever. Now, the same thing is happening with BingMicrosoft's search engineand the company clearly isn't pleased about it.If you use Microsoft's Edge browser and haven't changed any of its default settings, Bing is your search engine. Earlier this month, when you typed the word "Google" into that browser's address bar, you would see a page that you may have mistaken for a Google search, but you'd actually still be on Bing. The illusion came complete with a fake Google doodle, a search bar with Google-like text underneath it, results laid out in a way that aped Google's design, and other spoofed Google UI elements. This was first spotted by 9to5Google.The worst part was that the spoofed page even hid Microsoft Bing's branding by automatically scrolling past it. Normally, Bing's branding and the search bar are prominently visible at the top of every search.A few weeks later (and after the practice garnered a whole lot of attention, from this website and others), the charade seems to be over: Searching for "Google" on Bing now takes you to a standard Bing results page. But it's clear that they attempted this scheme at all that Microsoft has noticed that people are using Bing to locate Google, and isn't happy about that. Parisa Tabriz, the vice president of Google Chrome, expressed her displeasure at the move on X (formerly Twitter). Her post reads, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but Microsoft spoofing the Google homepage is another tactic in its long history of tricks to confuse users & limit choice. New year; new low @Microsoft." If you're unhappy with such tricks, you can easily switch the default browser on Windows 11.Editor's note: We have reached out to Microsoft for comment but haven't yet gotten a response.
