• Grimes Vouches For Elon Musk's Diablo 4 Records, Doubts Path Of Exile 2 Claims

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 07: Elon Musk and Grimes attend the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic ... [+] Imagination Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 7, 2018 in New York City. (Photo by Theo Wargo/Getty Images for Huffington Post)Getty Images for Huffington PostIn the latest incredibly goofy turn of Elon Musk being accused of cheating at video games, hes now being defended by an unlikely source, his ex-girlfriend and the mother of some of his children, the musician Grimes. She caught wind of all this and came out to defend at least some of his gaming achievements, saying that he did them himself with her as a witness. Heres what she said:Just for my personal pride, I would like to state that the father of my children was the first american druid in diablo to clear abattoir of zir and ended that season as best in the USA. He was also ranking in Polytopia, and beat Felix himself at the game. I did observe these things with my own eyes. There are other witnesses who can verify this. That is all.Elon replied by saying thanks. At one point Elon Musk claimed he was one of the top 20 Diablo 4 players in the world with Pit 150 speedruns. But being the first American to beat one seasonal activity on one class would not exactly be the same level of achievement. Though I suppose the idea is that if he could do that, maybe he really did eventually grind Diablo that hard. However, Grimes cannot vouch for his recent Path of Exile 2 achievements, where he also purports to have a world ranked character with an extremely high level, fully geared-out monk he played on stream. In the same thread, she responded to that part posed by a user:MORE FOR YOUI respect Elon's past gaming record but there are reasonable suspicions that he had help with Path of Exile 2. There's no shame in that because its insanely hard and hes very busy, but he should be honest.I agree, she said.I have a theory about what may have happened here. Both things could be true. Elon may genuinely be a serious Diablo 4 grinder and maybe achieved those records on his own. But then he may have also turned to Path of Exile and got some boosting help from outsiders. The evidence that Elon was not as good as he claimed at Path of Exile 2, as pointed out by creators, was misunderstanding some basics of the game, or at least things that someone with what would have to be a few hundred hours into the game to be playing at this level would have to know.Path of Exile 2Grinding GearThe way his mistakes came across to me was that it felt like a Diablo player who was stepping into Path of Exile for the first time and being confused about some of the differences like endgame mapping, item filters and which currencies were important as they dropped. Because as a Diablo player stepping into Path of Exile for the first time, these are things I myself went through before I learned how to play. Though I figured all this out probably 150 hours ago now.Thats my theory. Maybe he did the Diablo stuff, but the evidence for Path of Exile 2 boosting is pretty clear. Well see if he (or the mothers of his children) are done talking about this finally.Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

  • World's largest telescopes threatened by renewable energy project's light pollution
    www.techspot.com
In brief: The pristine night skies above one of Earth's premier astronomical observatories are in jeopardy, and astronomers are sounding the alarm. A massive $10 billion renewable energy complex proposed just a few miles from the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile could severely disrupt observations with increased light pollution. European Southern Observatory Director General Xavier Barcons told Space.com that astronomers expect the project to brighten the sky by up to 10 percent around the observatory. Such an increase would be enough to diminish the Very Large Telescope's status as the world's premier observatory, reducing it to merely an "average" facility. That modest 10-percent spike packs a bigger punch than it seems. Barcons warned that increased light could prevent observation of up to 30 percent of the faintest galaxies currently visible. The VLT's incredible sensitivity has allowed groundbreaking discoveries like the first direct image of an exoplanet and the unveiling of the cosmic web structure. However, it would lose this capability were the skies to become brighter. The energy complex in question is the INNA Renewables Park, planned by US energy giant AES. It would span over 7,400 acres in Chile's Atacama Desert and feature solar farms, wind farms, and hydrogen production facilities. Sadly, the project could also leak as much light into the night sky as a city of 20,000 people, based on ESO estimates. The park spells potential trouble for the ESO's $840 million telescope. It will also affect its upcoming $1.5 billion Extremely Large Telescope on Mount Armazones. Both were carefully situated in the Atacama's remote regions to take advantage of some of the darkest night skies on the planet. The ESO and 16 member nations chose this site after an extensive global search for ideal observation conditions.Barcons clarified that the ESO is not opposed to the facility; it is just its proximity. He argues that AES should build the energy complex further away from the observatory. Mocing it 50km (31 miles) further away would resolve the problem. The ESO is also calling for stricter legal protections of the Chilean night sky, especially around the observatories in the Atacama Desert. // Related StoriesAccording to AES Chile, the project is still in its early stages and pending final approval. In December, it submitted an environmental study stating that "community engagement is a top priority."Image credit: ESO

  • I ordered french fries at Culver's, Sonic, and Freddy's. One chain really stood out from the rest.

2025-01-19T14:27:01Z Read in app I tried french fries at Culver's, Freddy's, and Sonic. Meredith Schneider This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? I went to Culver's, Freddy's, and Sonic to see which chain has the best fries in the Midwest. All three serve different styles, so there's something for everyone on this list.Freddy's fries were beautifully thin and crispy, which is just how I like them.^ Pick one of those chains to link! (Or we can link a chain later and link "best fries in the Midwest" instead if we have something relevant)I love french fries, but there are so many different varieties out there that I think it's hard to name an objective winner.Despite this challenge, I ordered fries at three popular Midwest chains Culver's, Freddy's, and Sonic to see which one served my favorite fast-food side. Here's how the fries stacked up. First, I drove through Sonic.Sonic doesn't have indoor dining rooms, so I took my fries to go. Meredith Schneider Sonic started as a single restaurant in Oklahoma in the 1950s and has since grown to over 3,500 locations across 47 states.I ran out to get my fries at 11 a.m. on a Sunday, and I was able to drive right up to the speaker without waiting. My medium fry cost $3.25. Despite being the most expensive of the bunch, the container appeared to have the least amount of food.Sonic's fries have been upgraded since the last time I got them. The fries almost reminded me of tots. Meredith Schneider If you haven't been to Sonic in a while, it might be time to swing through and get yourself some fries. Last year, the chain released its Groovy Fries crinkle-cut potatoes with a crispy surface akin to the chain's famous tots. They're quite different from the Sonic fries I remember.Maybe the idea of having to choose between tots and fries was too much for people. Whatever the case, the fries had a great crunch, even if they were a bit nontraditional. The ridges are also supposedly ideal for picking up dipping sauces, which I could see as a plus.Next, I ran down the street to Culver's.Culver's is an iconic Midwest burger chain. Meredith Schneider Since opening in the 1980s, Culver's has become an old-reliable in the Midwest. The Wisconsin-based chain, which now operates out of 26 states, is known for its Butterburgers, cheese curds, and frozen custard.Even on a Sunday morning, it was hopping. The parking lot and drive-thru were both packed. My medium fry from Culver's cost $2.74 and was the only one served in a paper bag instead of a cardboard container. However, I seemed to have gotten a few more fries than I received at Sonic, so I was content.Culver's is great if you like a thick-cut fry.Culver's fries are hefty. Meredith Schneider If you like potato wedges, these may be your top choice. Culver's crinkle-cut fries have a similar soft, creamy interior with a thin outer layer. Some of my fries had nice crispy edges, but unfortunately, they were few and far between. However, I let the inconsistency in texture slide a little since the fries are so thick noticeably larger than the other two which I bet makes the cooking process more difficult.I swung through Freddy's last before heading home.Freddy's is a Kansas-based chain. Meredith Schneider Freddy's hasn't been around as long as the other chains it was founded in 2002 but it's expanded far beyond its humble beginnings in Wichita, Kansas. It now serves cheese curds, onion rings, and frozen custard in 500 locations across 36 states. There were a few other Sunday morning customers and diners, but I easily placed my order and patiently waited for my food.Freddy's medium fries come in an upright container the biggest of the three and it seemed absolutely overloaded. For $3.09, I was pleased with the generous portion.Freddy's stood out from its competitors.Freddy's fries were much thinner than the others. Meredith Schneider Visually, Freddy's thin fries are very different from the crinkle-cut ones I got at the other chains. They tasted ever-so-lightly seasoned and almost had a shoestring texture. I'd say they're slightly thinner than a McDonald's fry.Best of all, each one was delightfully crunchy, just how I like it.All of these options were solid, but Freddy's fries were my favorite.Freddy's has the best french fries, in my opinion. Meredith Schneider There is truly a french fry for everyone on this list. Although it's difficult to crown one singular winner, I think their distinctions are interesting to note.Freddy's was my favorite, and if you're also a fan of consistently crispy, shoestring fries, it'll likely be yours as well. However, if you prefer a thicker wedge-like fry, Culver's is probably your best bet.Sonic kind of fell into its own unique category, but I guess if you can't decide between a tot and a fry, you now know where to go. • How we measure poverty matters and we can do better
    www.vox.com
How many people are living in poverty in America? It depends on whom you ask. If its the US Census, the answer would be somewhere around 37 million people. But that number doesnt necessarily capture everyone who might be considered poor, because measuring poverty largely depends on how we define it. And some definitions, including the one used to determine the federal poverty line, can be surprisingly arbitrary.Thats a problem, because understanding how we measure poverty is critically important not just because it gives us a sense of how deep the problem is in American society, but also because it allows us to better evaluate anti-poverty programs. If we look at the federal poverty line, for example, it looks like poverty has mostly been stagnant, slowly ebbing and flowing without much meaningful change. In 1970, for example, 12.6 percent of Americans lived below the poverty line and in 2023, 11.1 percent of Americans did. But by other measures, poverty has dramatically dropped over the past six decades. So how do we measure poverty, and should we look for another way? The poverty line, explainedThe official poverty rate, as measured by the US Census, is seriously outdated. It was developed in 1963 by an economist at the Social Security Administration, and it determined that the threshold should be three times the minimum food budget of a given family. That calculation was based on data from the 1950s, which found that the average American family spent about a third of their income after taxes on food. To put a finer point on this, heres how my colleague Dylan Matthews described this methodology in 2015: The way we measure poverty is based on a 51-year-old analysis of 59-year-old data on food consumption, with no changes other than inflation adjustment. Thats bananas. Its only gotten older since then, and its flaws dont stop there. The official poverty measure also leaves out critical components of a persons income, including some major anti-poverty programs. While it does count certain social benefits outside someones regular wages that contribute to their income things like unemployment or Social Security benefits major assistance programs like food stamps, Medicaid, or housing vouchers are excluded. Additionally, because it calculates incomes pre-tax, it leaves out tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit. As a result, the official poverty rate misses how major social programs are helping lift people out of poverty.Since 2011, however, the Census has taken steps to address these issues by applying another measure of poverty the Supplemental Poverty Measure. This calculation ditches the decades-old practice of only using food spending to determine the costs of a familys basic needs, adding other expenses like shelter, clothing, and utilities to the equation. It also counts noncash benefits like food stamps or housing vouchers toward someones income, and unlike the official poverty measure, which largely ignores geography, it accounts for regional cost-of-living differences. According to researchers at Columbia University, who calculated what the Supplemental Poverty Measure would have been in the years before the Census started using it, poverty declined by 40 percent between 1967 and 2012. But when they removed some aspects of a persons income, including certain tax credits and social programs, then it looks like poverty has stayed pretty much the same over the same time period. What else is missing? All of this sounds very technical. But where the government chooses to place the poverty line can make a material difference in someones life: If someone technically falls above the poverty line, that doesnt mean that they suddenly no longer struggle to make ends meet. And though a persons income might not change, if the poverty threshold changes, someone may then have a more difficult time covering basic costs because they might lose access to some welfare benefits like food stamps. So while various poverty measures can help give us a sense of how big of a problem it is, its also important to look at other factors that set people back and design programs to address those issues. Sky-high housing costs, for example, eat up many families incomes. According to Harvards Joint Center for Housing Studies, for example, 22.4 million renter households, representing about half of renter households, are rent-burdened meaning they spend more than 30 percent of their incomes on rent. And some 12.1 million households were severely rent burdened, meaning they spent more than half of their incomes on rent. Rent burdens dont show up in some poverty measures, including the official Census metric; but addressing these exorbitant housing costs would significantly help families across the board, especially those with lower incomes, and likely help alleviate poverty overall. Ultimately, the problem of poverty doesnt come down to how we measure it, but to how much government is willing to do to ensure that everyone can have a decent and dignified life. And no matter how we choose to measure poverty, one thing is for certain: We are nowhere close to guaranteeing that standard of living in America. This story was featured in the Within Our Means newsletter. • How to Get Around the US CapCut ban
    gizmodo.com
CapCut simplifies video editing and creation, making it ideal for social media influencers on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and other platforms. Sadly, the US CapCut ban prevents all American residents from using their favorite video editor.Following the bombastic TikTok ban in the USA, CapCut stopped providing its services to this country as a result of its failure to comply with the governments requests. Since January 19th, 2025, neither TikTok nor CapCut are functional in the United States. But what if we told you you could STILL use CapCut in the USA and keep making videos? The workaround is incredibly simple and involves a VPN, whose IP-modifying abilities allow you to access CapCut in the US as if you were somewhere else.Stay tuned for more information; well explain everything. How Can a VPN Unblock CapCut in the US?CapCut stopped providing services to people in this country. The whole conundrum is about blocking users with a US IP address. As a result, the solution is to use a VPN to mask your original IP and replace it with a new one located in another country. A VPN such as NordVPN is capable of doing this safely and efficiently.NordVPN offers servers in 118+ countries, so its easy to swap your IP address and bypass the CapCut ban in the USA. Once connected to a VPN server, the old IP is masked so that CapCut cant see your original whereabouts and impose the ban.Unblock CapCut with NordVPNNordVPN is frequently used by people in the USA. Its fast, offers unlimited bandwidth, and comes with a no-logging policy. This means its ideal for privacy, which is an important factor not just for CapCut but also for unblocking TikTok in the US.As it has a 30-day refund policy, its practically risk-free.This means you can get it, enjoy CapCut in America, and snatch a refund in 30 days if you dont want to pay. Alternatively, keep using it and unblock other content, or simply enjoy the encryption and privacy youll get.How to Bypass the US CapCut Ban: An Easy-to-Follow GuideGlad you asked. Well use NordVPN to overcome the CapCut ban in the US. This trick works on all devices because NordVPN offers native clients for Windows, Android, macOS, iOS, and Linux. Follow the steps below for more information:Subscribe to NordVPN. Use this link to get a 70% discount on its biennial plans. Alternatively, click any of the buttons in this article to do the same.Install NordVPN on your device you can use it on up to TEN devices at a time.Launch NordVPN and then sign in with your email and password.Connect to a server abroad do NOT use the US ones. We opted for the UK instead.Visit CapCut, sign in, and enjoy the video editor as you normally would. Gizmodo.comCapCut Works But With No Templates What to Do?Some people reported that CapCut works in the USA but with one huge issue. The lack of templates.Thats a rather strange problem but if this happens, it still means youre affected by the CapCut US ban. Either way, the solution is the same because you still cant use the software properly. As you know, templates are vital for what CapCut is trying to achieve.Once again, set up NordVPN on your device, connect to a server outside the USA, and launch the application again. You should now be able to see all your templates and use them to create videos without limits.Access CapCut in the US With NordVPNWhats the Deal With CapCut and the US?For those who dont know CapCut and TikTok were banned in the United States pretty much simultaneously. Theres a strong connection between the two apps their founder ByteDance.ByteDance is a Chinese company accused by the US government of alleged spying attempts. To prevent ByteDance from covertly spying on US residents, President Biden has signed a new PAFCA Bill, which essentially protects people from spying through apps.Additionally, the US government requested ByteDance to sell off ownership by January 19th, 2025, which the latter blatantly refused. As the ban took effect as a result, both CapCut and TikTok were promptly removed from the App Store. CapCut (Error message in the USA)Up-and-coming President Donald Trump vowed to work with ByteDance to reinstate TikTok and CapCut in the USA. However, we dont know when and IF that will be the case.If youre a social media creator, CapCut and TikTok are a must-have, which is why its best to use NordVPN until further notice. Otherwise, youll be left without access to these vital tools and rid yourself of potential revenue. Is Unblocking CapCut in the USA Legal? The US internet space is one of the least censored in the world. This means VPNs are legal here and you and use them as long as your activities arent illicit. Accessing CapCut in the USA and overcoming the ban is legal as well since no law explicitly states otherwise. If youve read the previous section, you know the whole panic among the US authorities has to do with notorious Chinese spying. At least on paper, the US is trying to shield its citizens from China whose apps allegedly collect their private information. That said, youre free to use NordVPN to sidestep the US CapCut ban. If you dont see CapCut as a threat to your privacy, good. Youre free to make and edit your videos as you see fit, without the fear of ending up like Robespierre.Closing ThoughtsShould you wait for Mister Trump to work things out with ByteDance and bring back beloved TikTok and CapCut in the USA? We wouldnt trust politicians too much.Biden is not yet out of office, so right now, were looking at shallow promises. Its best to use NordVPN, whose three-dollar-a-month plan wont cost a fortune. Once the VPN is set up on your devices, simply connect to a server overseas and use CapCut in the US without interruptions. In the process, youll also be able to use TikTok for added fun!Dont forget that this fix is risk-free and you dont have to pay a cent if you dont want to. Get a refund in 30 days and say Goodbye! to NordVPN in that case. It cant be simpler.Try NordVPN Risk-free today

Equal parts refined and generous, an extension in Lund's residential quarter brings new life to an apple orchard. Dating back to the 1920s and already meticulously renovated by the clients, the existing villa is supplemented with a generously sized entrance hall, guest room, kitchenette, and bathroom. Johan Sundberg Arkitektur lets large glazed openings provide plenty of natural light over stone floors and birch plywood walls. The contrast between the different natural materials gives an impression of warmth and airiness. "This is the classic question: how do we add something new to something old?" says Johan Sundberg. We chose a low building form that, in terms of volume, color, and material, is subordinate to the older house, while maintaining its unique character as a new addition.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The extension's carefully considered detailing and fine-grained facade sit comfortably amongst the apple orchard's lush vegetation. The sedum-clad pulpit roof of anthracite-patinated zinc slopes gently towards the stone terrace and closes off the building towards the neighboring plot. At dawn and during the day, the glass partitions reflect the changing character of the sky. In the evening, the higher volume disappears into the darkness while the openings shine like a lantern.Save this picture!Save this picture! Thanks to the neutral color palette of the facade and roof, the addition is able to express its own qualities while remaining subordinate to the surrounding buildings. High-set windows capture the light of the open sky while maintaining privacy. The bedroom, kitchenette, and bathroom are accessed from the entrance hall in an open living space to be used as a guest room, rental, or taken over by the family's sons when they grow up. The extension opens out onto a stone terrace via a step of cast concrete, both of which were installed by the clients. "The extension is a clear addition with its own language which doesn't try to imitate the old house", explains project architect Max Germundsson. The materiality of our custom-designed vertical paneling in untreated larch reinforces the proximity to the garden and helps to reduce the overall scale.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The entrance hall completes the original villa and makes it significantly more accessible. Previously atop a flight of steps, the entrance now sits at ground level, simultaneously improving the connection to the basement level. Enveloping the circulation space between the house's different levels, the tall, bright entrance hall becomes a new living room, where materiality is accentuated through abundant natural light. The clients worked closely with the architects and put in a lot of their own time to get the details right. While the discrete dimensions and horizontality of the extension distinguish it from the existing villa, these qualities marry the extension and its paving to the apple orchard.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeJohan SunbergOfficeMaterialsWoodSteelMaterials and TagsPublished on January 19, 2025Cite: "Timjan House Extension / Johan Sunberg" 19 Jan 2025.
