  • Are '2x Concentrated' Cleaners Worth Your Money?
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page.Growing up, my mom used Pine Sol to clean everything around our home and taught me to do the same. When I moved to New York at 18, I learned that my new Queens- and Manhattan-born friends were all about Fabuloso. I used the two products faithfully throughout my adult life and was perfectly satisfied with how well they worked. When I noticed a few months ago that both brandsas well as others I trusted, like Mr. Cleanwere rolling out new "2x concentrated" formulas, I wasn't sure what to think. If something isn't broken, I don't seek to fix it, you know? I took note of price differences and wondered if it was, perhaps, a gimmick. (In addition to teaching me about the wonders of Pine Sol, my mom also taught me to be deeply distrustful of marketing.) The price of 80 ounces of double-concentrated Pine Sol is between $15 and $20, depending on various discounts, while 96 ounces of regular Pine Sol comes in at $18.49. Broken down, the more concentrated version was spendier by a tadbut was it worth it? After using the new Pine Sol formulation for a few months, I can say that yes, it is worth itbut to be on the safe side, I conducted what I consider a very scientific experiment today with my standard Fabuloso and its double-concentrated counterpart. The Fabuloso experimentThis week, Fabuloso sent me their newest scent to test out. I was excited about this because I love things that smell like peaches, but didn't realize I'd signed up for a 2x concentrated version. When I opened it, I was even more excited because I already had a full bottle of regular Fabuloso on hand, which meant I could do a true comparison. The first part of that comparison is price: The 56-ounce bottle of 2x-concentrated Fabuloso is $5.49 and 48 ounces of the regular stuff will run you $4.59. That's 10 cents per ounce either way, though I know these prices vary. What you pay at your local corner store is different than what you pay at Walmart and that's to say nothing about the fluctuating prices and sales on Amazon. I even found a 56-ounce bottle of 2x-concentrated Fabuloso for 10 cents cheaper than the standard formula at Target. Generally speaking, you're looking at spending around $5, give or take, no matter which formula you choose. Now, for the cleaning power. First, I spent some time this morning looking around my home to find the dirtiest spot. I unearthed a baseboard that had been hidden by a shelf for a long time. It was disgusting. Perfect! Terrible! Credit: Lindsey Ellefson Then, I set about figuring out how to compare these two products in the most responsible, scientific way. I settled on splitting the baseboard in half and using the same exact amount of each formula to scrub one side or the other. I used one capful as my amount and split a paper towel down the middle so each capful would be distributed evenly across the same amount of towel. This is how science gets done. Here is the left half of the baseboard, cleaned with normal Fabuloso: Decent! Credit: Lindsey Ellefson And here is how the section looked when I used the 2x-concentrated formula to clean the other half: Resplendent! Credit: Lindsey Ellefson Fabuloso experiment resultsHere's the thing: Both of these products do the same job. The cleanliness of the baseboard overall is not in question after using either product. What is truly different is the cleaning process. I counted how many swipes of my paper towel it took to remove the dirt from each side of the baseboard. With the normal Fabuloso, I was looking at about 25 swipes. With the concentrated version, the number of swipes was seven. This means, per my findings, you need less product or less effort to get your desired result. Even if the 2x-concentrated Fabuloso cost a lot more than the normal one, which it doesn't really, it would be worth it, which is the same conclusion I came to after needing to use significantly less of the double-concentrated Pine Sol than I would of the normal version over the last few months, too. Something else I've noticed is that the smell is stronger in the concentrated version. For me, that's a major selling point. I don't just want things to look and feel clean, but smell clean, too, and the 2x-concentrated cleaners that I have used have all had stronger scents than their standard contemporaries and those stronger scents have lasted longer, too. I completed my Fabuloso experiment about 45 minutes ago and can still smell the double-concentrated peach scent. The lavender, unfortunately, has already started to dissipate. Overall, I recommend these concentrated formulas and consider them a quality innovation on the part of Big Cleaning. In what I can only hope will be the long years of my life, I am sure to run into more gimmicks and money grabs, but I do not consider this to be among them.

  • Sony axes two more live service games
    www.engadget.com
Sony has canceled two more live-service games, one from its remake and remaster studio Bluepoint and another from Days Gone developer Bend Studio in Oregon, the company confirmed to Bloomberg. Neither studio will be closed, though the company has yet to say if any layoffs will occur. "We are working closely with each studio to determine what are the next projects," a spokesperson said.Bluepoint is the studio that created the much-lauded remakes of Demons Souls and Shadow of the Colossus. The company reportedly helped with God of War Ragnarok from 2022-2022, and following that, was working on the live-service project canceled yesterday, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier said in a post on BlueSky. Bend Studio has been a first-party developer for Sony since 2000, with its most recent project being the action-adventure game Days Gone, released for PS4 in 2019.The cancelations are the latest failures for Sony in the GaaS (games as a service) arena, following the spectacular flameout of Concord in September 2024. While the company did have a hit with Helldivers II last year, it reportedly canceled several other live-service games in the last several years, including one based on Spider-Man. Sony Interactive Entertainment cut around 1,120 jobs in 2024 across various studios, including Bungie, Naughty Dog and Insomniac part of an unfortunate trend in the industry. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/gaming/playstation/sony-axes-two-more-live-service-games-130048000.html?src=rss

Now, the makers are back with a vision for Gen2, built on the backs of technological advancements as well as feedback from early adopters. Backers of the first version provided crucial feedback about small issues like limited multi-device options and connectivity time. The Gen 2 addresses these pain points with noticeable precision. Setup times are practically nonexistentjust 0.01 seconds for the wireless connection to kick in. And if youre in a setting where multiple users need access, the receiver now juggles up to five transmitters. There is, however, one more thing with the 4URPC. It isnt only an HDMI transmitter/receiver, its also a 100W PD3.0 adapter, allowing you to charge or run devices through the dongle itself. Why? Because ports are a rarity on devices like phones or laptops (you only get a limited number of them), so it only makes sense to provide as much value if youre going to utilize a port. To that end, 100 watts of power deliver is perfect for laptops and more than sufficient for tablets or phones, allowing them to fast-charge in a snap. Pair that with improved heat dissipationair vents that look cool and work coolerand youve got a device that can handle itself during extended use without overheating. The transmitter-receiver duo is tinyjust 0.23 inches thick and lighter than most smartphones. • Google AI Proposes a Fundamental Framework for Inference-Time Scaling in Diffusion Models
    www.marktechpost.com
Generative models have revolutionized fields like language, vision, and biology through their ability to learn and sample from complex data distributions. While these models benefit from scaling up during training through increased data, computational resources, and model sizes, their inference-time scaling capabilities face significant challenges. Specifically, diffusion models, which excel in generating continuous data like images, audio, and videos through a denoising process, encounter limitations in performance improvement when simply increasing the number of function evaluations (NFE) during inference. The traditional approach of adding more denoising steps prevents these models from achieving better results despite additional computational investment.Various approaches have been explored to enhance the performance of generative models during inference. Test-time compute scaling has proven effective for LLMs through improved search algorithms, verification methods, and compute allocation strategies. Researchers have pursued multiple directions in diffusion models including fine-tuning approaches, reinforcement learning techniques, and implementing direct preference optimization. Moreover, sample selection and optimization methods have been developed using Random Search algorithms, VQA models, and human preference models. However, these methods either focus on training-time improvements or limited test-time optimizations, leaving room for more detailed inference-time scaling solutions.Researchers from NYU, MIT, and Google have proposed a fundamental framework for scaling diffusion models during inference time. Their approach moves beyond simply increasing denoising steps and introduces a novel search-based methodology for improving generation performance through better noise identification. The framework operates along two key dimensions: utilizing verifiers for feedback and implementing algorithms to discover superior noise candidates. This approach addresses the limitations of conventional scaling methods by introducing a structured way to use additional computational resources during inference. The frameworks flexibility allows component combinations to be tailored to specific application scenarios. The frameworks implementation centers on class-conditional ImageNet generation using a pre-trained SiT-XL model with 256 256 resolution and a second-order Heun sampler. The architecture maintains a fixed 250 denoising steps while exploring additional NFEs dedicated to search operations. The core search mechanism employs a Random Search algorithm, implementing a Best-of-N strategy to select optimal noise candidates. The system utilizes two Oracle Verifiers for verification: Inception Score (IS) and Frchet Inception Distance (FID). IS selection is based on the highest classification probability from a pre-trained InceptionV3 model, while FID selection minimizes divergence against pre-calculated ImageNet Inception feature statistics. The frameworks effectiveness has been shown through comprehensive testing on different benchmarks. On DrawBench, which features diverse text prompts, the LLM Grader evaluation shows that searching with various verifiers consistently improves sample quality, though with different patterns across setups. ImageReward and Verifier Ensemble perform well, showing improvements across all metrics due to their nuanced evaluation capabilities and alignment with human preferences. The results reveal different optimal configurations on T2I-CompBench, focusing on text-prompt accuracy rather than visual quality. ImageReward emerges as the top performer, while Aesthetic Scores show minimal or negative impact, and CLIP provides modest improvements. In conclusion, researchers establish a significant advancement in the diffusion models by introducing a framework for inference-time scaling through strategic search mechanisms. The study shows that computational scaling via search methods can achieve substantial performance improvements across different model sizes and generation tasks, with varying computational budgets yielding distinct scaling behaviors. The research concludes that while the approach proves successful, it also reveals the inherent biases in different verifiers and emphasizes the importance of developing task-specific verification methods. This insight opens new avenues for future research in developing more targeted and efficient verification systems for various vision generation tasks.Check out the Paper and Project Page. • TikTok Is Back Online in the U.S. After Being Officially Banned on January 18
    www.ign.com
UPDATE (1/19/25) - Following a short time being shut down, TikTok is now back online in the U.S. In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service, TikTok wrote in a statement on X/Twitter. We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive. Its a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States. The original story follows.TikTok has officially been banned in the U.S. and the social media app can no longer be accessed by those within its borders.Users who try to hop on TikTok will no longer see videos from creators across the world, but instead will be greeted with a message that begins, "Sorry, TikTok isn't available right now.""A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can't use TikTok for now," the message continues. "We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned! In the meantime, you can still download your data."Image Credit: Faisal Bashi/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty ImagesTikTok made one final appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, but last week it unanimously struck it down despite its understanding that many other apps collect a ton of data to analyze. In their eyes, TikTok had the potential for harm. There is no doubt that, for more than 170 million Americans, TikTok offers a distinctive and expansive outlet for expression, means of engagement, and source of community," The U.S. Supreme Court said. "But Congress has determined that divestiture is necessary to address its well-supported national security concerns regarding TikToks data collection practices and relationship with a foreign adversary. For the foregoing reasons, we conclude that the challenged provisions do not violate petitioners First Amendment rights. As TikTok mentioned, the company is hoping that Donald Trump will bring it back online after he officially becomes the next U.S. President on January 20, but there has been no definite word as of yet. He did, however, say to NBC News in an interview on January 18 that he will "most likely" delay the ban for 90 days. This delay would give a buyer from the United States or one of its allies time to purchase the app, which hasn't happened yet and is what led to the ban. What did occur, however, is that other apps with links to TikTok parent company ByteDance have gone dark, including CapCut, Lemon8, and even Marvel Snap.Have a tip for us? Want to discuss a possible story? Please send an email to newstips@ign.com.Adam Bankhurst is a writer for IGN. You can follow him on X/Twitter @AdamBankhurst and on TikTok.
