• Best-Selling Games Of Each Year Since 1998 In The US

Top SellersFor many years Call of Duty has typically been the US's best-selling game each year. While Hogwarts Legacy took the crown in 2023, Call of Duty is back on top again in 2024, with Black Ops 6 ranking as the No. 1 best-selling game of the year. With 2024's best-selling games announced, we're now looking back at the past 26 years of game sales in the US, which can be quite eye-opening to look at today.Circana (formerly the NPD Group) released this data on social media by way of analyst Mat Piscatella. These lists are ranked on dollar sales, not unit sales. Something else to note is that the lists include physical game sales and digital sales (from 2012 onwards)--but only from publishers who provide that data. Not every company does, though, so these lists are not perfect. It's also worth bearing in mind they cover only a calendar year, meaning steady sellers over time, such as Minecraft, don't rank as highly as you might expect. With those caveats in mind, these lists do provide a general overview of which games sold the best in the US over the past 26 years. As you'll notice, Call of Duty and GTA games are regular chart-toppers, as are sports games like Madden and the incredibly popular Rock Band and Guitar Hero franchises. But there are many others--wrestling games, Need for Speed, and others--that once dominated the charts but haven't made an appearance on them in years.Scroll through the slides below to see all the best-selling games of the past quarter century. 1998The top-selling games of 1998 were revolutionary. Ocarina of Time established many 3D mechanics that set trends for years; GoldenEye demonstrated that first-person shooters could thrive on console; Banjo established a formula for mascot platformers; and Gran Turismo was the first major simulation-style racing game. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time007: GoldenEyeWWE WarzoneNFL BlitzWCW/NWO RevengeResident Evil 2Banjo-KazooieGran TurismoMadden NFL 99Super Mario 64Tekken 3Mario Kart 64Metal Gear SolidYoshi's Island1080 SnowboardingNFL Game Day 99Crash Bandicoot 3: WarpedTomb Raider 2: Adventures of Lara CroftStar Wars: Rogue SquadronWCW vs. NWO: World Tour 1999Nintendo dominated 1999, with nine of the top 10 best-selling games coming from the Japanese game giant. Additionally, 2014 was the first time Mario Kart 8 showed up. It didn't rank very highly (No. 17), but that could be because the Wii U didn't do all that well. • Palworld creator launches publishing division, starting with a horror game from Tales of Kenzara studio
    www.polygon.com
Pocketpair, the company behind smash hit Palworld, announced that its entering the publishing business with a new division called Pocketpair Publishing. This business will support game development through funding, development assistance and publishing for indie game developers and studios, Pocketpair said in a news release.First up, Pocketpair Publishing signed a project from Tales of Kenzara: Zau makers Surgent Studios. This game is unrelated to the Tales of Kenzera universe; its a standalone horror game. Surgent Studios CEO and House of Dragons actor Abubakar Ssalim said its still in earnest conversation about further projects set in the Tales of Kenzara universe. Both Surgent and Pocketpair are well-versed in taking risks, Salim said. We noticed a pattern in the entertainment industry, and Pocketpair has given us the opportunity to make a horror game about it. It will be short and weird, and we think players will be interested in what we have to say.The game, which is unnamed at this time, is expected out in 2025.This is the energy I want to see driving games in 2025developers lifting each other up, creating together, and pushing the industry forward.Massive love to the Pocketpair team! Its an incredible honor to be the first partnership announced with @PocketpairPBLSH Weve been https://t.co/DM8Z7Lp4oK Abubakar Salim (@Abzybabzy) January 23, 2025Its good news for Surgent Studios, which announced in October that it put the work of its games team on hold due to a lack of funding. Its at that time when the studio put the word out about a new prototype: a game thats darker, edgier, and more visceral than our first game, but it retains all Zaus high-octane combat and cultural depth. Surgent Studios wrote on X in October that it was looking for a partner on it; thats seemingly where Pocketpair stepped in. Alongside the announcement of the Pocketpair partnership, Salim noted that the pair up is what hed like to see in 2025: Developers lifting each other up, creating together, and pushing the industry forward.Video games cost more than ever to make while funding has seemingly all but dried up. Last year was particularly hard for smaller studios to stay afloat, and thousands of people across the industry were laid off. Even critical success couldnt help studios; Tales of Kenzara: Zau was lauded for its take on Metroidvanias, led by an actor in a Game of Thrones television show, and still couldnt capitalize on that success until another indie studio stepped up to help. With Palworld, a survival creature-catching game, Pocketpair generated more profit that it could handle at its size. In an interview with Bloomberg, Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe said Palworld cost less than 1 billion ($6.4 million) but brought in tens of billions in profit. Now, its seemingly using that success to push other indies forward, too.As the games industry continues to grow, more and more games find themselves struggling to get funded or greenlit, Pocketpair Publishing lead John Buckley said in a news release. We think this is a real shame, because there are so many incredible creators and ideas out there that just need a little help to become incredible games. On the Pocketpair Publishing website, the company states that it doesnt want to take control from a developer, nor does it want to change your dream or push you to make a certain type of game. It wants to give developers money to make their dream games. Its a message that sounds familiar; smash hit social deduction game Among Us developer Innersloth used its success to launch a similar initiative in 2024 Outersloth. Like Pocketpair, InnerSloths success was outsized to the studios origins. Among Us blew up in 2020 and has continued to see success.Being indie devs ourselves, we knew one of the hardest things to get was straight up funding, Innersloth communications director Victoria Tran told Polygon in 2024. Were very privileged to be in the position were in and have the eyes on us, so we hoped we could create something that hopefully inspires others to pay it forward, wherever they can and whatever that means to them. We only got here because of the help of our industry peers and players, so it felt right to help where we could. The video game industry is still looking for a way to ensure sustainability for its projects, and, most importantly, it workers; in 2025, at least, indies funding indies are the first to make that push.

    www.polygon.com
With so many games available at our fingertips or in our backlogs its sometimes hard to know what game is worth our time. Figuring out where to spend our precious free time can feel daunting, especially with more things vying for our attention. And if youre busy with jobs, families, or other obligations, that free time shrinks even more. But Polygon is here to help. Well, actually this week Im here to help. During our weekly open thread, everyone is welcome to comment to ask for tailored game recommendations. Want a long game to tuck into during the winter? Or some way to test out a new genre youre interested in exploring? Or a game perfect for chatting while playing on Discord? Ill do my best to make recommendations no matter what you throw at me and Im sure other commenters will too. How will this work? From 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. EST, Ill be in the comments responding to any questions looking for game recommendations. If youre looking for one, please share as much info about what youre looking for as you can, including about what platforms you own, or if you have a subscription service like Xbox Game Pass. And just so you get to know me better, my tastes span a lot. I tend to play a lot of single-player titles, mostly on PC or the Switch. I like both turn-based and action RPGs, some roguelikes, puzzle games, and a large smattering of genre-defining indies. I dabble in fighting games and deck-building (I finally uninstalled Marvel Snap so it would stop consuming all my free time). Ill definitely play some things online too with the right group; Marvel Rivals is reminding me that Overwatch used to be fun. Im also currently deep into my first playthrough of Death Stranding, and my most anticipated game for February is Monster Hunter Wilds. So, what would you like to play next? Leave a comment below and Ill do my best to find your next favorite game.

  • Podio Glassware From Traga Is Simply Elemental
    design-milk.com
Italian glassware company Traga returns with a clever take on the drinking vessel the Podio Cup, designed by Netherlands-based Maurizio Filippi. One side is for drinking, and the other is for holding a tea light water and fire with glass in between. Made from borosilicate, known for its strength and durability, these glasses are perfectly appropriate for hot and cold beverages alike, allowing home mixologists to serve anything from a Lemon Drop to a latte in style.Traga launched a design brief earlier this year titled Redefining the drinking glass, an open call for designers and artists to submit proposals along this central theme. The Podio Cup was the winning design out of over 200 submissions. The inspiration behind the design comes from two forces that have always shaped moments of life without asking for permission fire and water. A glass that can contain both a candle and a drink becomes more than an object; it becomes memory, explains Daniel Nikolovski, founder of Traga. The intriguing dialogue between elements can be displayed at once, offering multiple functions when in use, and an elegant profile when not. Multiple Podio Cups stack on top of each other to form a totem of sorts, an elegant way to display sculptural glassware no need to relegate dishware to a cupboard. They have been designed in a way that no sides touch, guaranteeing a scratch-free way to keep your cups pristine. When designing our pieces, we always aim to create a dialogue. That approach began with our debut product, the Martini Shot Glass, an object that connects two drinks simply by flipping the glass, says Nikolovski. Podio also bridges two worlds through a single flip, but this time one side is for drinking, and the other is for atmosphere. Its a very intuitive process, and often, the design itself determines what belongs on one side and what on the other.Traga is a glassware company based in Milan, redefining utility objects we use and interact with daily. Traga is derived from Proto-Slavic, meaning to trace or mark, similar to the imprints of glassware on a tablecloth after a good dinner with friends. Currently available in four colors Amber, Jade, Clear, and Milk were excited to see more options for the Podio Cup in 2025, as well as hints of an everyday coffee/tea mug to look forward to within the new year. For more on the Podio Cup by Traga, which is available individually or as a set of four, visit traga.it.

  • The XREAL One Smart Glasses Get Closer to Real Looking AR Glasses
    design-milk.com
While smart glasses are eventually expected to be a major way we interact with the digital world in the future, for now, theyre still limited by current tech. But, XREALis taking another step forward with the new XREAL Onesmart glasses, which look more like traditional sunglasses than anything before them, at least for glasses with built-in displays.Smart glasses with displays typically have large projection elements behind them that project onto a screen to reflect light back towards your eyes. To be clear, these glasses have that too but its thinner than previous generations, and that makes a huge difference. Will you wear these around the street in day to day life? No, probably not but if you do want to wear them in places like a train or plane, you wont stick out quite as much. The displays on these glasses are actually very high tech. They have a peak brightness of 5000 nits, and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz for a smooth feel. And, they can project a 147-inch equivalent, which will make them excellent for productivity.Core to these glasses, however, is their processing power. The glasses have XREALSs custom X1 chip designed specifically for AR, which allows them to support 3 degrees-of-freedom, or 3DoF. 3DoF basically means that you can tilt your head or turn your head, and the image will react accordingly when you do so.Even better? The glasses will work with a ton of different devices, thanks to the fact that they connect through a simple USB-C cable through DisplayPort. That means that youll be able to connect them to your phone, laptop, or even a gaming console, to see the image projected in front of your eyes. The glasses also have Bose-designed speakers in them, and buttons to control display mode and audio. Were still a ways off from wireless smart glasses with displays built into them that look like traditional glasses. But if youre not a fan of the audio-only smart glasses, like the Meta Ray-Ban glasses, then these might be for you, especially when it comes to portable productivity. The Xreal One smart glasses are available for $499 via xreal.com.

  • ChatGPT Is Down (and Up and Down) This Morning
    lifehacker.com
If you tried to open ChatGPT this morning, only to find the service endlessly loading or erroring out, you're not alone: ChatGPT is up and down this morning, along with other OpenAI services. OpenAI's official status site shows some issues for services across OpenAI's portfolio, but ChatGPT is the most affected. As of this article, all other services are listed as "Operational," but ChatGPT is still listed as "Partial Outage." The company has six updates listed on Jan. 23 under "Past Incidents:" The first was at 3:54 PST: "We are currently experiencing elevated error rates in the API. We are currently investigating." OpenAI identified the issue at 4:26 PST, then rolled out a fix at 4:30 PST. As of 4:43, the company said it resolved the elevated error rates on ChatGPT and the API, but more issues have appeared since. At 5:12 PST, OpenAI said they were experiencing elevated error rates for ChatGPT itself, and as of 5:43 PST, the company found the root cause, and are working on a fix. If true, ChatGPT should be back up and running soon.I've had mixed results with ChatGPT this morning, which tracks with the "Partial Outage" label OpenAI has assigned the platform. The first time I heard about the outage, I tried to load ChatGPT, and after some time, received an error message. Later, though, ChatGPT refreshed, and I was able to interact with the chatbot. However, while writing this article, ChatGPT became unresponsive again. I was able to get it to load one more time, but the situation is definitely a bit volatile at the moment.
