• This Chinese AI App Just Overtook ChatGPT
    lifehacker.com
A week after banning TikTok from app stores (no, it still isnt downloadable) and one day after threatening 25% tariffs on Colombia, the U.S. has taken a major blow in its ongoing trade warsovernight, Silicon Valley seems to have lost its AI dominance. The shakeup follows a release from fresh-faced Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, which on Jan. 20 updated its ChatGPT-like AI assistant with its open-source R1 reasoning model. According to Deepseeks testing, the R1 model matches OpenAIs o1 reasoning model on several metrics, all while being much, much cheaper to develop. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on DeepSeek R1s ultra-low development cost, citing the one-year-old companys claims that it only took $5.6 million to develop the new model, vs. over $100 million from OpenAI for its equivalent. It took a little bit for the news to get out there, but DeepSeek has consequently risen to the top of the App Store, unseating ChatGPT as the most-downloaded free app. The sudden surge in attention has been hard on U.S. stocks, sending the Dow down by about 0.22%, the S&P down by 2%, and the Nasdaq down by 3.6%. More specifically, Google parent company Alphabet is down 2.89%, with Meta, Oracle, and other tech giants also seeing significant declines. Notably, data center and graphics card company Nvidia, which supplies much of the hardware powering AI development, is down 11.64%.Nvidias stock drop in particular likely has to do with claims from DeepSeek that it only needed roughly 2,000 specialized Nvidia chips to train its latest AI model, whereas leading U.S. models tend to use closer to 16,000 chips. Said claims are still awaiting verification, but if true, would poke holes in the US recent policy efforts to restrict the amount of U.S. chips Chinese developers can use.On the consumer side of things, DeepSeek promises cheaper access to higher-tier models than ChatGPT, which puts basic access to its o1 model behind a $20/month ChatGPT Plus subscription and unlimited access to the o1 model behind its pricey $200/month ChatGPT Pro plan. Unfortunately, the company seems to be suffering from success right nowservers appear to be overloaded, and Im currently not able to sign up for an account for testing. Presumably, as more people get through and get their hands on these models, it'll be easier to verify just how scared of DeepSeek U.S. companies should be.Still, the competition could prove to be a shot across the bow for U.S. AI developers, who, alongside President Trump, just announced the $500 billion Stargate Project, an initiative to build out U.S. AI infrastructure starting with a $100 billion plan to build out data centers in Texas.

  • Chinas DeepSeek AI assistant becomes top free iPhone app as US tech stocks take a hit
    www.engadget.com
Chinese AI assistant DeepSeek has become the top rated free app on Apple's App Store in the US and elsewhere, beating out ChatGPT and other rivals. It's powered by the open-source DeepSeek V3 model, which reportedly requires far less computing power than competitors and was developed for under $6 million, according to (disputed) claims by the company. At the same time, it offers performance that's on par with Claude-3.5, GPT-4o and other rivals, DeepSeek said last week. The news that DeepSeek topped the App Store charts caused a sharp drop in tech stocks like NVIDIA and ASML this morning. Google parent company Alphabet and Microsoft were also down this morning. As the New York Times notes, the overall Nasdaq and S&P 500 dropped as well, and markets in Europe and Japan also took a bit of a hit.Available on web, app and API, DeepSeek is similar to AI Assistant like ChatGPT with features like coding content creation and research. Its first DeepSeek-R1 release is available under an MIT license, so it can be used commercially and without restrictions. The company is headquartered in Hangzhou, China and was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, who also launched the hedge fund backing DeepSeek. To develop the tech, he reportedly stockpiled NVIDIA A100 chips prior to the US export ban and paired those with less powerful chips that can still be imported, according to MIT Technology Review. However, DeepSeek was still at a significant hardware disadvantage next to rival models from OpenAI, Google and others. That forced the company to be more efficient with its AI models, and it has supposedly been able to build and train them at a far lower cost than previously thought possible.Analysts from Citi and elsewhere have questioned those claims, though, and pointed out that China is a "more restrictive environment" for AI development than the US. Still, the rise of DeepSeek has raised concerns about the potential profits of rivals like OpenAI that have already invested billions in AI infrastructure. All the attention today around DeepSeek appears to have attracted some bad actors, though. According to CNBC, DeepSeek says it is temporarily limiting registrations for the service in light of "large-scale malicious attacks." Existing users should be able to log in as usual, however. But if all the buzz around the tool made you want to check it out, you might have to be patient.Update, January 27 2025, 11:47AM ET: This story has been updated with details on the cyber-attack on DeepSeek that has limited registrations for the service.Update, January 27 2025, 11:27AM ET: This story and its headline were updated with more details on the stock price drops that appear to have hit this morning in conjunction with the news around DeepSeek. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/chinas-deepseek-ai-assistant-becomes-top-free-iphone-app-as-us-tech-stocks-take-a-hit-134445151.html?src=rss

  • How abortion providers can help patients navigate threats to digital privacy
    www.fastcompany.com
Long before Roe v. Wade was overturned, reproductive justice advocates had been sounding the alarm about the increasing number of women subjected to criminal investigation for suspected abortion, stillbirth, or miscarriage. These cases were often initiated by healthcare providers and bolstered by state laws used to prosecute women for having abortions.Newer laws, however, incentivize people outside of healthcare, including friends and family members, to report someone they suspect of having an abortion or helping someone else with an abortion. Coupled with the unprecedented access that authorities now have to digital information, these laws create new avenues for prosecution. In the post-Roe era, people capable of pregnancy face growing threats. Healthcare providers, family, friends, information on personal devices, and virtually any activity that can be observed or recorded pose privacy risks that can lead to prosecution. I study online privacy. This vast scope for potential surveillance and privacy intrusion is a key focus of the research my colleagues and I conduct. In a recent paper, we surveyed reproductive healthcare providers about their privacy and security practices. We used the results to map the path of a hypothetical Jane to illustrate how people can identify privacy risks in their own situations. This choose-your-adventure approach helps readers navigate the potential legal, digital, and personal challenges involved in accessing reproductive healthcareand reveals the grim stakes.Privacy protectionsHistorically, healthcare providers who opposed abortion have been the primary sources for reporting patients suspected of seeking abortions. While they remain a significant threat, additional risks to patient privacy have emerged. For example, state laws increasingly compel providers to hand over medical records. This circumvents new Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act protections meant to shield protected reproductive health information from use in investigations when people seek abortions in states where the procedure is legal. Authorities might also be able to access records across state lines where abortion is legalfor example, when different electronic health record systems can share data.It is also possible that, in the future, electronic health records could be seized across state lines. Last year, in a letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 19 state attorneys general protested the new federal data privacy rules. Texas followed up with a lawsuit against the Biden administration over the rule.Even so-called shield laws adopted by some states meant to protect people seeking abortions from record seizures have loopholes. Under the Biden administration, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services added a privacy rule to protect reproductive health data.Privacy vulnerabilitiesDespite some protections offered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, additional gaps in safeguarding reproductive health information persist. Data captured outside medical portals, such as from apps or pharmacy transactions, often falls outside the federal laws scope. Its important to note that apps that capture consumer reproductive health data, like period trackers, do not necessarily pose a greater risk than informants. But the dystopian potential of governments reaching into personal intimate data, and the simplicity of the remedydeleting an appdraw disproportionate attention. While its not entirely clear whether period trackers are definitively good or bad from a digital privacy perspective, they do offer potential benefits, such as helping people prevent unwanted pregnancies and thus avoid prosecution.Once reported to authorities, activities conducted on personal devicesbrowsing history, purchases, location data, and messages with friends or familycan become evidence in prosecutions. Authorities have shown a willingness to subpoena records from social media platforms, and they frequently access personal devices.Additionally, laws that incentivize family, friends, and partners to report suspected abortions create a threat of surveillance from intimate associates. These dynamics are exacerbated by new laws that criminalize trafficking minorstransporting them across state linesfor abortion services.Providers role protecting privacyIn our research, my colleagues and I found that reproductive healthcare providers can play a critical role in guiding patients on adopting privacy strategies and helping them navigate an increasingly complex landscape of privacy threats. Clinics are trusted spaces for affordable, progressive care that often shield patients from judgment or harm.Based on our interviews with reproductive healthcare providers, the protocols they use to manage communications, billing, and other aspects of patient interactions have proved effective at protecting privacy, especially for vulnerable populations like minors or people with abusive partners. However, people seeking abortions face more nuanced threats. Providers tend to overlook digital risks and threats of prosecution tied to patients devices and records. This gap in awareness leaves patients without critical guidance for protecting their privacy. Our initial research conducted in the aftermath of the Dobbs decision revealed that people capable of pregnancy express profound concerns about reproductive privacy, yet often feel inadequately prepared to navigate its complexities.Findings from our forthcoming research suggest that many patients take extensive precautions, yet its not clear how effectively they can prioritize their digital strategies. At the same time, these people place significant trust in their reproductive healthcare providers, especially because they often deem existing guidance on privacy untrustworthy or insufficient.Although providers may currently be less attuned to the newer privacy risks, they could play a crucial role in addressing them. By incorporating digital privacy and threat modeling into their care, providers can help patients navigate a complex landscape of threats in an environment of pervasive surveillance.Nora McDonald is assistant professor of information technology at George Mason University. This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. • Kia is recalling over 80,000 U.S. cars. Heres why
    www.fastcompany.com
Automaker Kia America is recalling more than 80,000 vehicles due to floor wiring beneath the front passenger seat that can become damaged and prevent airbags and seat belts from deploying properly.Damaged wiring can also cause an unintended side curtain air bag deployment, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall covers 80,255 2023-2025 Niro EV, Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and Hybrid vehicles. To remedy the situation, dealers will inspect, replace, and reroute the floor wiring assembly, as necessary, for free. In addition, dealers will install wiring covers. Owners will be notified by letters mailed in March. The recall follows one in November, when Hyundai and Kia recalled over 208,000 electric vehicles to fix a transistor in a charging control unit that could be damaged and stop charging the 12-volt battery. That in turn could cause loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

  • Red-painted steel structures feature in Mexican riverfront revitalisation
    www.dezeen.com
Architecture studio Entorno y Contexto has led the redevelopment of a stretch of the Papaloapan River on Tuxtepec, Oaxaca, installing lightweight steel structures on stilts and landscaping to facilitate recreation. The massive Los Mangos Community Centre development stretches four kilometres along the riverfront. It includes four stilted steel structures and 11.8 hectares of landscaped public space with paths, recreation and conservation areas. The development was created to rehabilitate public space between the urban environment of Tuxtepec and the Papalopan River at the behest of Mexico's Secretaria of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (SEDATU).Etorno y Contexto has created a river park in Oaxaca"Building on and extending the historical lineage of the park, we focused on the concept of spatial articulation to create a coherent structure that ensures the legibility and accessibility of the public environment," said Etorno y Contexto director Alejandro Polo Lamadrid."Our aim was to facilitate the introduction of recreational, cultural and sports facilities within the complex while promoting the restoration of areas of environmental and landscape value."Many of the structures installed for the project are open-air to facilitate easy access from the park and are covered with simple metal roofing. The simple materials, which include steel and exposed concrete, were used to emphasise the area's industrial heritage, according to Lamadrid. The park includes multiple stilted structures and amenitiesThey were prefabricated and installed on-site and provide space for amenities such as restrooms, while also serving as waiting areas for local transit or as community gathering spaces. All the buildings have large portions suspended above ground by steel stilts due to the intermittent flooding of the river.Though the buildings are mostly open-air, they include elements to shelter users such as walls of perforated brick.Industrial materials were utilised"Local materials such as stone and natural red clay partitions were also used through simple and timeless applications," Lamadrid told Dezeen."On the other hand, the use of clay and red chromatics as a material reference to the state of Oaxaca is reinterpreted in a simple and contemporary way."Multiple covered courts shelter daytime sports activitiesFive sports courts were included in the program two covered and three uncovered as well as grass-covered sports pitches and a track.A variety of open spaces with built-in seating and exercise equipment were woven into the plan, connected by the walking and cycling paths that run through the entirety of the park.Concrete workout equipment is connected by walking and cycling pathsRehabilitating the landscape was of utmost importance for ensuring the durability of the park, and the architecture studio worked with landscape studio Virens A+P to remove non-endemic vegetation, replanting the area with native trees to try and reduce erosion.A boulevard along the park was also restored as part of the project. New signage, paving, and seating were added to complement the landscape of the park.Read: Quintanilla Arquitectos creates shaded sports complex in Mexican town"The revitalized park is once again attracting users of all ages, who are extending their visits thanks to the lighting provided in the sports and relaxation areas," said Lamadrid."It is estimated that the park will be able to accommodate up to 10,000 users at any one time, with around 5,000 visitors per day, in line with the planned program."Red was used to reference local architectureThis is the latest out of hundreds of architectural projects commissioned by SEDATU to improve the public spaces throughout Mexico.Others include a museum installed inside an old port building by Colective C733 and a concrete community centre by CCA.The photography is by Andrs Cedillo / ESPACIOS.Project credits:Etorno y Contexto team: dgar Marmolejo, Alejandra Guzmn, Hesner Snchez, Tania Hernndez, Erik Urbina, Susana MarnLandscape: virens A+PStructure: Miyamoto MxicoInstallations: Zenon InstalacionesConstruction: Karisma IngenieraThe post Red-painted steel structures feature in Mexican riverfront revitalisation appeared first on Dezeen.
