  • Apple tops 1 billion subscriptions, nearly $100B in services revenue in 2024
    techcrunch.com
Apples iPhone sales may be down, but the companys Services division, which includes the App Store, iCloud, Music, TV+, and other subscriptions, is still soaring. The Cupertino-based tech giant reported Thursday its Services business had an all-time revenue high of $26.3 billion for the quarter ended December 28, up 14% year-over-year. Services generated nearly $100 billion in revenue over the past year, CEO Tim Cook said during Thursdays earnings call. In addition, Apple reported having more than 1 billion subscriptions across its services, including through third-party apps in the App Store. The company said that customer engagement with its services, including both transacting and paid accounts, reached record highs. Paid accounts and subscriptions both grew by double digits year over year.Apple pointed to expansions of specific offerings like Apple Arcade, which continues to add games and Fitness+, which adds new programs. It also noted Apples Tap to Pay for iPhone, which is now live in 20 markets.Regulatory impactOn the topic of subscriptions, investors wanted to know how a new regulatory environment could potentially affect these numbers. While investors didnt outright ask about the Trump administrations impact on Apple revenue directly, one question focused on whether new regulatory changes could be beneficial. That is, would a more balanced regulatory environment potentially reverse prior headwinds that Apple may now be absorbing in its results?Apples CFO, Kevan Parekh, skirted the question, reiterating instead the positive numbers for Services and adding that customer engagement was increasing across the customer base, all its services offerings, and geographic regions. CEO Tim Cook didnt respond to the question. For years, Apple has defended itself over antitrust lawsuits and other governmental actions, both in the U.S. and abroad. The core debate has centered on how much of a percentage Apple is justified to take from the apps it hosts on its App Store and the transactions that flow through them.Last year, one key antitrust case finally came to an end when the U.S. Supreme Court ultimately declined to hear an appeal on the Epic-Apple decision, initially filed by the Fortnite game maker. That means the lower courts decision that the tech giant was not a monopolist still stands. However, that decision did mean Apple has to allow app makers to steer customers to the web from links inside their apps. Though the lawsuit was largely in Apples favor, Epic won a similar case with Google. Given the partial victory, other developers may have been inspired to pursue their own legal actions against Apple or Google, hoping to continue carving away at Apples chokehold on the app distribution market.

  • Apple CEO says DeepSeek shows innovation that drives efficiency
    techcrunch.com
Apple CEO Tim Cook said DeepSeeks AI models represent innovation that drives efficiency during an earnings call Thursday while fielding questions from analysts about the iPhone makers AI ambitions. In general, I think innovation that drives efficiency is a good thing. And, you know, thats what you see in that model, said Cook, responding to an analysts question about how DeepSeeks AI models would impact Apples margins.Cook went on to note that Apple leverages a hybrid model for its AI, in which it runs some simple tasks locally using its own AI models on its devices custom silicon chips. Meanwhile, other, more complicated tasks run in the cloud through partnerships with AI model providers.Cook also said Apple has always taken a prudent and deliberate approach to these types of expenditures.Apple currently only has one AI partnership, with OpenAI, which allows ChatGPT to answer complex questions from iPhone users in a private cloud. OpenAI claimed this week to have evidence that its AI models were used to train DeepSeeks AI models through a process called distillation. If true, that would violate OpenAIs usage policies and undermine DeepSeeks accomplishments. That didnt stop Apples CEO from tossing a compliment toward DeepSeek.Apple has indicated its OpenAI partnership is not exclusive, and it may integrate other companies AI models into the iPhone in the future, such as Googles Gemini or Anthropics Claude. Cook did not go as far as to suggest Apple would integrate DeepSeeks models, however. Beyond OpenAIs allegations of IP theft, several tech analysts have suggested that DeepSeeks AI models were trained with significantly more GPUs and computation costs than the company claims. That would mean DeepSeeks AI models were not trained quite as efficiently as some suspected. Still, the Chinese AI lab sells access to its models at a steep discount compared with what American AI labs charge.Investors also peppered Cook with questions about the success of Apple Intelligence. The phased launch of Apples AI features does not appear to have created the immediate boost to iPhone sales that some predicted. Instead, sales slightly declined in the last quarter, compared to last year. Hoping to spin the decline more favorably, Cook claimed the company saw stronger sales in regions where Apple Intelligence had rolled out than regions where it had not.Apple has faced other issues with its AI features, beyond their lack of availability. It recently paused its AI summaries of news articles this month after the feature produced misleading headlines. In one case, Apple Intelligence hallucinated and changed a BBC news headline to incorrectly read that Luigi Mangione, the man charged in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself, which was untrue.

  • Is This The Achilles Heel Of Apples New iPhone SE?
    www.forbes.com
Apple CEO Tim Cook delivers remarks before the start of an Apple event on September 09, 2024 (Photo ... [+] by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)Getty ImagesApple has to perform a careful balancing act with the upcoming iPhone SE. As the first mid-range iPhone in three years, it needs to offer an attractive retail offering to consumers without cannibalising the sales of more expensive and profitable iPhones higher up the portfolio. And one decision that lowers the SEs specifications may come back to haunt Tim Cook and his team. The iPhone SE Vs Androids Smartphone ArmyThe latest information on Apples next smartphones shows that the iPhone SE will follow the choices made by previous SE phones and ship with just one camera lens in the main camera assembly. Why could this be a problem? It just takes one look at the competition to realise the apparent difference. The desirable Android handsets in this price range all feature at least two lenses on the main camera. Some add a telephoto lens alongside the primary lens. Others decide on a wide-angle lens. Some are rebellious and decide a macro lens is needed. Yet all of these offerings have a visual numerical advantage.Sporting two lenses in the main camera is the norm. Compared to all of these leading handsets, the iPhone SE risks looking older and feeling cheaper.MORE FOR YOUHow iPhone SE Sales Could Be ImpactedWhile this may not matter to Apples notoriously fanatical community, it will impact the casual consumer looking for a new phone in this price range. While the Apple name may still sparkle, the visible deficiency in the camera may take the shine off the entire package.Apple is expected to launch the iPhone SE in late-March to early-April.Now read more about Apples decision to use an older screen design for the iPhone SE...

  • Video Game History Foundation releases trove of game dev documents, magazines, and more
    www.techspot.com
Why it matters: Researching video game history often requires sifting through analog materials that can be difficult or even impossible to access. The Video Game History Foundation recently took a significant step toward easing this challenge by making old development and promotional materials publicly available. The Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) digital archive is now in early access and available for free. The nonprofit's website hosts a vast collection of scanned game magazines, development documents, promotional materials, and other historical content spanning several decades.More than 1,500 issues and press documents from publications such as Electronic Gaming Monthly, Next Generation, GamePro, and others are now available with searchable text. The database also includes artwork, research papers, video, audio, source code, and various notes from companies like Myst developer Cyan, Origin Systems, and Necrosoft Games much of which has never been made public before. The VGHF hopes the library will aid academic researchers, bloggers, YouTubers, and other content creators in uncovering primary sources when covering the industry's history. While much of the material comes from retro gaming communities, the organization is also contributing high-quality original scans from its physical library in California. Additionally, it has developed a custom OCR method designed to read low-contrast magazine pages. For example, the database includes all 367 issues of Game Informer, a magazine that was abruptly shut down last August, leading to the deletion of its official archive. The VGHF's digital archive aims to prevent such losses from happening again. // Related StoriesHowever, the library does not host playable games. The VGHF has spent years trying to provide remote access to archived titles, but both the U.S. Copyright Office and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) have stood in the way and blocked these efforts. The Copyright Office has repeatedly denied libraries an exemption under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), while the ESA argues that remote archival access could impact sales of classic game re-releases. The most recent ruling came last fall, and the next opportunity for reconsideration won't come until 2027.According to a VGHF study, 87% of games released before 2010 are no longer commercially available. As a result, researchers, archivists, and retro gaming enthusiasts are often left with no choice but to pay exorbitant prices for used copies or turn to piracy. Relying solely on the titles that publishers choose to re-release will inevitably leave significant gaps in gaming history. In the meantime, the VGHF will continue expanding its digital database. As a nonprofit, it relies in part on donations, and those interested in supporting its work can contribute via its website.

Kill Bill Vol. 1and Vol. 2 are essentially the same film cut into two parts. Yet if were judging them on an individual basis, the first one is superior. Uma Thurman stars as the Bride her real name doesnt come up until the second film and she has a real bone to pick with her former lover, Bill (David Carradine). On the day of her wedding, Bill sent the Brides former teammates in the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad to murder her and everyone in her wedding party.Years later, the Bride awakens from her coma with a desire for revenge. And the first two names on her hit list are Vernita Green (Vivica A. Fox) and O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu). Even if the Bride can get past these two, she still has to get past Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah) and Budd (Michael Madsen) before she can confront Bill. Tarantino lets the story unfold in a non-linear fashion, and somehow it plays even better that way.Watch Kill Bill: Vol. 1 on Hulu.Bleecker StreetJesse Eisenbergs A Real Pain is currently streaming on Hulu, but fans of dark comedy may prefer one of his earlier roles in The Art of Self-Defense. If their names sound familiar, thats because their ISS mission has lasted much longer than expected due to issues with the Starliner spacecraft that brought them to the orbital outpost in June last year. The mission was only supposed to last eight days, but due to technical problems on what was the Starliners first crewed flight, NASA engineers decided to bring the spacecraft home empty, leaving Williams and Wilmore to hitch a ride on a returning SpaceX Crew Dragon in the next couple of months.
