  • Ford made a NASCAR Mach-E, but its not sure what to do with it yet
    arstechnica.com
will it race? Ford made a NASCAR Mach-E, but its not sure what to do with it yet Just some good ol' boys with some big ol' batteries. Tim Stevens Jan 30, 2025 8:15 pm | 14 Credit: Ford Credit: Ford Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreFord provided flights from Albany to Charlotte and accommodation so Ars could attend its Ford Performance 2025 event. Ars does not accept paid editorial content.Ford's no stranger to the NASCAR life. Ford driver Joey Logano was the 2024 Cup Series Champion in one of the company's Mustang-bodied machines. He's currently leading the 2025 series, too. However, the Blue Oval and its Ford Performance division are going into uncharted territory with its new prototype, an all-electric Mach-E built atop elements of NASCAR's current Next Gen chassis. The machine uses three motors to make a total of 1,341 hp (1,000 kW). Yes, three motors, one for each rear wheel plus the odd one out up front, giving the thing all-wheel drive. That's a seeming necessity, given the car has two times the power that any NASCAR racer is allowed to deploy on the non-restrictor plate races. But that extra driven axle isn't just for acceleration. "If you're rear-wheel drive only, you're only getting rear regen," Mark Rushbrook said. He's the global director of Ford Performance. Since braking forces are higher at the front axle, an extra motor there means more regen to recharge the battery. Credit: Ford The motors and the car's development were done by Austrian motorsport development house STARD, which also provided the engineering behind Ford's previous electric demonstrators, like the Supervan and the SuperTruck. The most interesting thing, though, might just be the car's shape. The NASCAR Mach-E has a decidedly crossover profile, much like NASCAR and ABB's prototype EV, helping to make room for the batteries78 kWh to be exact. Is now the time to go EV racing?Ford Performance is still working out where and when we'll see this latest demonstrator actually demonstrating, but Rushbrook said this concept was developed in concert with NASCAR and other manufacturers, so this isn't just a one-off. With shifting EV perception across the country and many saying that alternate fuels are the way forward, part of the plan is to figure out just what the fans want to see. Credit: Ford "That's part of what we're doing. It's an experiment. It's just like what we did with the NHRA. We didn't know how the fans would react, and they reacted positively," Rushbrook said. He's hoping for a similarly positive reaction, but there's no plan to force EVs into competition before the tech and the fans are ready. "You can't change Cup, Xfinity, Truck in the current racing format with full electric. It doesn't work on big ovals like this," he said, referring to the Charlotte Motor Speedway. But, he added, EVs could provide for some great action on road courses and short-track ovals, anything with opportunities to use that brake regen to recharge the battery. The electric NASCAR Mach-E prototype debuted at Ford Performance's annual kick-off event, but it wasn't the only high-power, electron-shredding machine on display. Ford also confirmed it's headed back to Pikes Peak this year with yet another bewinged monster. Details are scant at this point, but it looks to be an evolution of the same basic formula that has underpinned the Supervan and SuperTruck before. Credit: Ford About all we know for sure is that this one has a Mustang logo on the nose, so it seems safe to assume the Mach-E isn't just getting the NASCAR treatment. Ford infamously won last year's Pikes Peak Hill Climb with its SuperTruck despite the thing coming to a complete stop mid-run. This year, the team hopes for a little less drama but just as much winning. 14 Comments

  • Black boxes recovered from American Airlines plane after collision with helicopter. Here's what's next in the crash investigation.

A jet operated by American Airlines collided with a Black Hawk helicopter in Washington, DC.Investigators on Thursday said they recovered the black boxes from the passenger jet.Black boxes can provide key data from moments before the impact.Investigators recovered the recording devices, or black boxes, from one of the aircraft involved in Wednesday night's midair crash near the Reagan Washington National Airport.A spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board, which is overseeing the probe into the crash, told Business Insider in an email that the "cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder" from the Bombardier CRJ700 airplane operated by American Airlines was recovered."The recorders are at the NTSB labs for evaluation," the spokesperson said.Blackboxes provide key pieces of data that can help investigators determine what happened before the moment of impact. The cockpit voice recorder "records radio transmissions and sounds in the cockpit, such as the pilot's voices and engine noises," according to the NTSB. "The other, the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), monitors parameters such as altitude, airspeed and heading."The collision between a passenger jet and a military helicopter occurred in one of the most congested airspaces in the US, BI reported.Sixty-seven people including four crew members and 60 passengers aboard the CRJ700 and three Black Hawk crew members were presumed dead. For years, aviation experts have warned of the risks of midair collisions amid air traffic controller staffing shortages and an increasingly congested airspace. This is a developing story, check back for more information.

  • I was ready to retire. Then my 40-year-old daughter died and I had to put all my plans on hold.
    www.businessinsider.com
I moved closer to my daughter, anticipating the arrival of my grandson. When he was 4 months old, I received a call that my daughter had unexpectedly died. I put my life on hold to help take care of my grandson. Anticipating retirement as a single mother, I made a major move to be closer to family. Two kids out of college, both married, with the prospect of grandchildren and the ocean close a side benefit I could now indulge in personal pursuits, writing fiction. After two gut-wrenching days of labor, my daughter Kendra gave us Ewan. Beautiful and healthy, his eyes sparkled with knowing wisdom that defied explanation. Savoring the joy after years of uncertainty, I was ecstatic to learn that my son Erik and my daughter-in-law Laura were expecting their first child six months later. Then, my daughter diedLiving minutes away, Kendra and I were in frequent contact as she adjusted to motherhood with the end of her maternity leave in sight. Surprising me one day with a visit, she held this plump-cheeked, 4-month-old delight, and I noted his flirting."I've never seen him do that," she replied."Here, I'll hold him so that you can see." Her glow was immediate as he delivered that coy smile, his head slightly tilted, with his thick lashes and watery blue eyes. The next day, I received a call at work. Driving the highway at 95 miles an hour, screaming, "Hold on, I'll be there," I was too late by hours. My daughter had died suddenly. The rest is too painful to recount.I took care of my grandsonTemporarily suspending my job, I focused on Ewan as I shared the air with my son-in-law Steve, my family, his from Ireland, and their friends, young parents themselves.Watching my 40-year-old daughter's world being eviscerated, I inhaled the insensitivity. At times an invisible entity, and in shock, I recalled her heartfelt anguish the day before that I was the only one she trusted to care for Ewan.Having firsthand knowledge of Ewan's world, I temporarily moved in with Steve to share in his 24x7 care. Shutting out the heartless advice to leave this neophyte young father alone, to get over my grief and move on, I would not abandon my daughter's child. As a veteran, I also understood the visceral impact of trauma and what Kendra wanted for her child.Like all sleep-deprived new mothers, I managed the daily routine so that Steve could return to work. Following sprints to day care, diaper bag in tow, I'd head to my job with spit-up on my shoulder, then rejoin the commuting tangle to make the 4:30 p.m. pickup. Our evenings were spent together until Ewan fell asleep, and I would return home alone to a space now outfitted with the requisite baby paraphernalia.A bright spark ignited our landscape when my granddaughter Matilda and her brother William were born, uplifting our spirits with their precocious charm. From this growing family, new traditions emerged with the weekly Burger Night as we guided Steve back to living. As reluctant partners, taking our cues from the parents' poorly crafted playbook, we, over time, adjusted to Ewan's growing demands, from newborn challenges to toddler exploration. The criticism is still in play, with retirement a necessity.I went back to writingFollowing my son's suggestion, I returned to my writing. Lost in my characters' despair and the elation of hard-won victory over injustice, I embedded the life I had wished for myself in their narrative. With Steve's remarriage and two energetic babies, my care of Ewan gradually shifted to weekends and daily day care runs. While balancing grandkid sleepovers, picky eaters, cooking lessons, new holiday traditions, and special Grammy days with Matilda and William. Despite the imbalance, with time and maturity, they understood that my relationship with Ewan would need to be different. After a recent local move, I am pleased that Ewan, now a thriving 13-year-old, still comes every weekend by choice. His future is secure, and his cousins are his best pals. He has blossomed with the loving support of family. As I sit on the cusp of new dreams postponed for 13 years I know that life's trajectory is not ours to control, despite all we crave, as impermanent as icicles. While nothing can erase the pain of a child's passing, my future now includes the warm touch of unconditional love and a new definition of retirement come what may.

  • Games Inbox: Why are Xbox consoles selling so badly?
    metro.co.uk
Demand is at an all time low (Microsoft/Metro)The Friday letters page doesnt think BioWare is to blame for Dragon Age: The Veilguards failure, as a reader suggests rebooting Nintendos forgotten Zelda clones. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.ukThe point of no returnReading the sales results for Xbox over the last few months it is really hard to see any positives and you can tell Microsoft tried their very best. I saw the same story repeated on other websites and I really struggle to understand their takes. How is a 2% increase, during the busiest time of the year, and during the biggest marketing campaign for the biggest Call Of Duty ever, something that could be considered good?It seems very clear that Black Ops 6 had little to no effect on Game Pass subscriptions as a whole but what saddens me the most is how bad console sales have got. Weve seen massive drops for two years in a row now and theres no coming back from that.Im sure theres lots of complicated reasons for it but it all boils down to the same thing: games. Xbox has had very little for most of the last two generations and PlayStation, up until recently, has had loads. Its a shame Xbox has started to get into gear now, just as the situation becomes irreversible but things like last weeks Developer Direct needed to happen a decade ago at which point they couldve kept them as exclusives. Its beyond too late now and its very obvious that Microsoft knows that Xbox Series X/S is currently a dead format walking.VabonZero to loseId just like to say that while I agree Resident Evil Zero is not a particularly good game, I would still welcome a remake. I think this would be the perfect chance to take an existing game and make it better, rather than just remaking it with better graphics. Resident Evil 2 and 4 were already great so all they had to do is not mess it up, but Zero is different. You could change as much as you want and very few people are going to complain, as not many people care or have even played it. So make it all set on a train or have the train crash somewhere other than the mansion. Maybe make it more open world, rather than fixed camera angles have them running around in the woods maybe, like the intro to Resident Evil 1.See how much you can shake up the formula with a game no one cares about and youll have some good practice for future games and it wont matter if it doesnt quite work.GrackleGoodbye gameId be fine with a Wave Race 64 sequel as the Switchs goodbye game, but I cant see that happening. To be honest I dont think the rumour is true but if I was going to bring back an obscure Nintendo franchise, Id go for one of the forgotten Zelda clones on the NES, either StarTropics or The Mysterious Murasame Castle.Theyre very obscure but go look at them on YouTube and youll see that they are blatant clones of the early Zelda games. Murasame Castle very occasionally gets referenced in other games, but I dont remember StarTropics ever being mentioned again, not even in Smash Bros.Just a thought, but I think itd be fun for them to make a small scale version of Breath Of The Wild for either franchise and see how different they can make it while using the same tech and gameplay.RosebudEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukPayment optionsSounds very likely to me that the rumours of GTA 6 costing $100/100 are because of some kind of double pack with GTA Online 2. To be honest Im fine with that. Although thats easy for me to say because I dont care about the online part.No one wants to pay more for games, but I can accept that some are so expensive to make that its very hard to make a decent profit on, I believe Spider-Man 2 was in this area. So, if I can buy the single-player of GTA 6 for 70 and then the online for 30 or so Im fine with that.Personally, Ill only get the single-player but some people might like to do the opposite. I cant imagine those thinking of doing both are going to feel that ripped off, considering how much they must like the series to even consider going that far.StrykerSuper lawyer bros.If Nintendo can try and sue that restaurant for calling itself Super Mario, what would it make of this shop I saw while in Aiya Napa in August 2024 that actually uses Marios image?Inside, it had brickwork like in the first Super Mario Bros game. And yes, that is Nathan Drake on my T-shirt.LeighDappaGC: Theres also a whole bunch of ice cream vans that dont realise theyre playing with fire. Were imagining a lot of mushroom based meals (LeighDappa) That is pretty cool (LeighDappa)Reversed fortunesThose Xbox sales results are seriously terrible. To think that was over Christmas too, when they were selling the most popular Call Of Duty ever. But what does that matter when most people are playing it on PlayStation 5? Microsofts attempts to put a spin on it all is just embarrassing too. Whats the point of picking out things like an increase in PC subs when we know, from their own figures, it didnt make any difference. A 30% increase from nothing is still nothing.I really dont see that there can be any argument for continuing Game Pass anymore. If Call Of Duty didnt move the needle then literally nothing will. If most Game Pass subscribers are also Xbox console owners then selling less and less consoles means youre in real trouble. Especially as Xbox owners are increasingly only hardcore fans and theyre going to be well aware that jumping ship to PlayStation 5 is probably a good idea at this point.I dont mean to kick a man when its down but gaming needs leadership and it needs close competition for PlayStation and Xbox is providing neither. The whole Xbox concept is collapsing in on itself. Microsoft may have bought Activision, but in reality it feels more like it happened the other way around.CharlieBoyAvailable nowIt took a good 18 months but out of nowhere boomer shooter Turbo Overkill made its way to all consoles from PC on the 29th. Only 16 too, well worth that price tag.Or try the free demo on all consoles to see if its your cup of tea.SimundoFirst impressionsYeah, there is no way that BioWare is making it out alive if Mass Effect 4 is anything other than a massive hit. Id like to think it will be, but I cant imagine working under such stressful conditions, with staff cuts, and probably budgets cuts, is going to encourage their best work. Its a crying shame because they used to be one of my favourite developers and Mass Effect 2 is one of my favourite games. I was never into Dragon Age as much, but I think The Veilguard suffered from two very basic problems, both created by marketing and not the developer. The first was the rubbish name. Dreadwolf wasnt great but The Veilguard just screams generic fantasy. It made me laugh when that other indie game GC reviewed this week also had a Veil in it! The other problem was the terrible reveal trailer that made it look like some childish Fortnite spin-off.Thats obviously exactly what they were aiming for, and I can imagine some dumb marketing person insisting that if they make the graphics cartoony then Fortnite fans and younglings will flock to the game. Which, of course, they didnt. When the first thing youve got to do after your reveal trailer comes out is insist that your game is not a silly comedy game then you know somethings gone wrong. They never recovered from that, I feel, and then even had to go on record after to say that the new Mass Effect will have realistic graphics. A shame.WolfInbox also-rans$100,000 for a GameCube that doesnt work? Ive got one in loft that doesnt work that Im prepared to sell for considerably cheaper.CorporunnerA library of old video game magazines? I dont know who had the time and money to organise that but I am very glad to hear it. • Happy 30 Years to This Bratty Little Star Trek Menace
    gizmodo.com
Starting any re-watch ofStar Trek: Voyager will lead you into similar patterns. Every time, you will ponder if Caretaker might actually be one of the best Star Trek pilots, or ruminate on the potential of the conflicts surrounding the integration of Starfleet officers and Maquis operatives, or just how The Kazon-Ogla? Who are the Kazon-Ogla!? might worm its way into your brain for the rest of your life (that one might just be me). But soon enough, if you find your mind wanderingor your eyes drifting closed after watching a few hours of TV in one goyou will inevitably lead to a sharp, loud noise shocking you back to lucidity: the scream of this little asshole. This is Latika, played by Brady Bluhmprobably better known to people without my specific brand of Star Trek brain damage as the one time voice of Winnie the Poohs Christopher Robin, or perhaps as Billy in 4C fromDumb and Dumberto incredibly annoying perfection in Time and Again, the fourth episode of Star Trek: Voyager, which turned 30 today. Time and Again is one of early Voyagers fascinations with temporal anomaliesa fascination the series had throughout its entire run, but hardly the finest example of it. Its a perfectly average episode: investigating a dead world ravaged by an explosion of volatile polaric energy, Captain Janeway and Lieutenant Paris find themselves inadvertently shunted back in time through a subspace distortion to the day before the apocalyptic accident. Forced to try and integrate into this society of people who seemingly all wear the same kind of horrendous tricolor t-shirt in various stripes of neon orange, mustard, and a leathery light brown, the duo have to find a way to escape or stop the accident before it occurs. The Voyager crew tries to save them, only for Janeway and Paris to discover that, paradoxically, the rescue attempt is what causes the explosion, they stop it, and everything reverts back to as it was, with the planet fine and Voyager going along its merry way. Its fine! Paramount But Latika is the memorable standout in an otherwise forgettable episodehes hilariously one of the biggest foils Janeway and Paris have from the moment they find themselves pushed back in time. Its his incessantly loud scream that first alerts everyone to the Starfleet officers sudden appearance, and its his dogged insistence in finding out what their deal is that eventually exposes them to a group of protestors looking to sabotage a polaric energy facility, seemingly dooming them to avoid altering the worlds fate. Although Paris eventually takes a phaser bolt for the kid when the protestors ramp up their destructive plans, running throughout is that he mostly did it because he feels bad about the impending apocalypse this whole planet faces, rather than feeling particularly sorry for this would-be-journalist kid who has the snotty attitude to match. Itsperfecttheres plenty of kids in Star Trek, and plenty of them are annoying, intentionally or otherwise. The series has a legacy of a few bratty youths, from Nogs early days before he joins up with Starfleet inDS9, to practically everyone on theEnterprise-D bullying the hell out of poor Wesley Crusher in TNG. But those characters in particular exist across the arcs of their respective series, theyre meant to grow and mature and not be quite so as abrasive as when we first meet them. Latika on the other hand? Hes a one and done character: hes in, hes annoying as hell, hes out. This isnt the case of a clunky child actor or anything: he is a brat, but hes meant to be. So bratty that, three decades on from his debut, he remains memorable despite the forgettable episode that surrounds him even if most of the memory is from that squeaky shriek Voyager introduces him with. The expansion of Seolhaeone Clubhouse was initiated to address the need for additional lockers due to golf course expansion, restaurant enhancement, and new cart storage facilities. While it appeared to be a clubhouse remodeling on the surface, it was essentially like re-establishing a master plan that needed to resolve customer flow, management circulation, and parking issues that were problematic in the existing clubhouse, while also reflecting the possibility for expansion according to long-term development plans.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! After examining various aspects of the expansion area, it was concluded that combining horizontal and vertical expansion would be the optimal method to organize circulation and ensure construction rationality. Therefore, our main focus for this project was to identify the most suitable structural system for each remodeling section and expand the areas accordingly.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!First, to address the shortage of locker space, the first-floor lockers were designated for men's use, while a vertical expansion created a new women's locker area on the second floor. The existing restaurant space facing east was expanded to include the terrace, securing a multipurpose space that could be shared with general visitors. • Childhood Trauma Followed by Adult Breakup Could Affect Brain Size
    www.discovermagazine.com
Romantic breakups really can go right to ones head more specifically, to ones hippocampus. That part of the brain, which helps control memory and regulate emotion, tends to be smaller in people whove both experienced childhood trauma, then lived through the end of a long-term relationship once they are older, according to a study in the European Journal of Neuroscience. How Trauma Impacts the BrainA smaller hippocampus is a hallmark of many mental disorders. Although childhood mistreatment is a known risk factor for later psychological problems, a solid link between that and hippocampus size has never been solidified. To better understand the link between long ago trauma and more recent emotional crisis, researchers studied a group of 196 young adults. They completed surveys both about childhood trauma as well as more recent emotionally challenging experiences, including breakups. Then they performed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study the hippocampus size. They found smaller hippocampus sizes in people who had both a troubled childhood and experienced a tough breakup. Childhood trauma alone seemed to have little to no effect on the adult hippocampus sizes. Other studies have also linked adult trauma to a smaller hippocampus.More Stressors, More ProblemsStudy author Henriette Acosta of the Philipps University of Marburg and University of Turku was interested in pursuing two lines of research at once. Some studies show that children experiencing abuse often develop coping strategies. But Acosta wanted to know if those strategies carried on into adulthood. Not only did the post-questionnaire MRIs show a link between childhood trauma, adult breakup and hippocampus size, it revealed a dose-response effect." In other words, study participants who rated themselves as experiencing a higher degree of childhood trauma and a later breakup had even smaller hippocampuses than those who reported a smaller level of trauma, as well as a breakup.Interestingly, participants who had reported childhood trauma but no breakup did not appear to have their hippocampuses affected much, if at all. The researchers speculate that may be a sign of resilience in some people.Although the study points out a possible link between trauma and hippocampus size, it doesnt firmly establish cause and effect. Also, asking subjects to report and rate childhood trauma can be subjective. Future studies that follow a larger group of people over a longer time period could better cement that link.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards.
