• BuroLandschap snakes cycle bridge over lake on former Belgian coal mine
    www.dezeen.com
Landscape architect BuroLandschap has completed Cycling Between Terrils, an S-shaped bridge over a lake in an eastern province of Belgium shaped by its coal mining past. The 400-metre crossing connects the municipalities of Dilsen-Stokkem and Maasmechelen and is the latest attraction built for Tourism of Limburg's cycling network in Hoge Kempen National Park.Buro Landschap has completed Cycling Between Terrils in BelgiumBuroLandschap's structure links two towering "terrils", a local word for the slagheap mountains formed by large piles of mining waste repurposed as a leisure destination for hikers and cyclists."The goal was to create a structure that integrates seamlessly into the natural and historical landscape, providing a unique experience for cyclists and pedestrians while maintaining ecological and environmental harmony," studio founder Pieter Daenen told Dezeen. The bridge links two slagheap mountainsInstead of a straight crossing between the two banks of the artificial lake, BuroLandschap designed an S-shaped bridge that brings users close to the water and encourages cyclists to slow down and take in the scenery. The studio's idea for Cycling Between Terrils' curving shape was rooted in the principles of the Fibonacci sequence or the Golden Ratio, the mathematical theory often used to create visual balance and proportion."Its flowing lines and organic form make it feel like a natural extension of the environment, further enhancing the connection between visitors and the surrounding nature," added Daenen. The bridge has a S-shapeThe water level on the gravel extraction lake can rise or fall as much as 130 centimetres and Cycling Between Terrils has been designed with a modular system that can adapt to this fluctuation.Working with engineering consultancy Tractebel, the architect built a chain of 30 hinged pontoon elements each stretching 13 metres in length.Read: Asif Khan adds sinuous public boardwalk to south London's Canada DockThe modules are connected using flexible joints, allowing the structure to move with the water, and anchored to the lakebed below by submerged steel pilings.A concrete base is filled with polystyrene insulation, which allows the pontoon to float and contributes to the bridge's stability. Its upper section and balustrade are crafted out of durable steel. It is finished with Maas gravel to blend in with the environmentTo blend in with the surrounding environment, Cycling Between Terrils is finished with a surface layer of Maas gravel extracted from the Maas River."This natural material not only enhances the aesthetic integration with the nearby cycling paths but also ensures a non-slip and comfortable surface for cyclists and pedestrians," said Daenen. The 3.3-metre-wide bridge can accommodate cyclists and pedestrians and is one of a number of attractions built in the park in Limburg to draw tourists to the region, known as Belgium's "cycling province".The bridge is formed of hinged pontoon elementsThe area now known as Terhills, which lies in eastern Limburg just five kilometres from the Dutch border, was once home to the Eisden coal mine site that closed in 1987. Its remnants include four artificial hills around the deep gravel lake, now densely forested with a steep trail for hikers to enjoy panoramic views.Other completed projects in the park include an elevated cycle path Cycling Through the Trees designed by BuroLandschap and De Gregorio & Partners.A four-kilometre-long cycle path, Cycling Through the Heathland, was designed by studios Maat-Ontwerpers and Bart Lens and completed in 2022. It cuts through the Mechelse Heide heathland and includes a 300-metre-long wooden bridge. The photography is by Pieter Rabijns. The post BuroLandschap snakes cycle bridge over lake on former Belgian coal mine appeared first on Dezeen.

  • Dr Disrespects Twitch ban, explained
    www.theverge.com
Dr Disrespect aka Herschel Guy Beahm was one of Twitchs top streamers until he was suddenly banned in June 2020. Now, we know what happened. As confirmed in a lengthy statement from Beahm himself, he sent private messages on Twitch to a minor that he says sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate:Were there twitch whisper messages with an individual minor back in 2017? The answer is yes. Were there real intentions behind these messages, the answer is absolutely not. These were casual, mutual conversations that sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate, but nothing more. Nothing illegal happened, no pictures were shared, no crimes were committed, I never even met the individual. The statement followed former Twitch employees explaining in social media posts and speaking to The Verge about why Twitch suddenly broke things off with Beahm, which was based on the messages he sent using its now-removed Whispers feature.Midnight Society, the game studio Beahm co-founded after the ban, has terminated its relationship with the streamer, and accessories company Turtle Beach has also ended its partnership with Beahm.Heres the latest news on Dr Disrespect and the reasons for his Twitch ban.

  • From Deep Knowledge Tracing to DKT2: A Leap Forward in Educational AI
    www.marktechpost.com
Knowledge Tracing (KT) plays a crucial role in Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) by modeling students knowledge states and predicting their future performance. Traditional KT models, such as Bayesian Knowledge Tracing (BKT) and early deep learning-based approaches like Deep Knowledge Tracing (DKT), have demonstrated effectiveness in learning student interactions. However, recent advancements in deep sequential KT models, such as Attentive Knowledge Tracing (AKT), have increasingly prioritized predictive performance over practical applicability and comprehensive knowledge modeling. These models often face fundamental challenges, including limited parallel computing efficiency, difficulties modifying stored knowledge, and restricted storage capacity. Additionally, many deep KT models rely on future interactions, which are typically unavailable in real-world applications, limiting their usability. Addressing these challenges is critical to enhancing KT models scalability, interpretability, and effectiveness in large-scale educational systems.Existing KT models utilize deep learning-based architectures to forecast student performance, with models like DKT utilizing Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks to learn the dynamics of learning. Although attention-based models such as AKB use attention mechanisms to improve long-range dependencies, they take future responses as input, rendering them not applicable in real-world scenarios. Deep sequential models also suffer from parallelization and memory issues, which lowers their efficiency in working with large-scale datasets. Other methods, including graph-based and memory-augmented models, are usually not interpretable, meaning they cannot provide useful insights into the students learning process. These shortfalls result in a gap between theoretical breakthroughs and practical applications, where an even more scalable, interpretable, and efficient KT model is needed.Researchers from Zhejiang University propose DKT2, a novel deep learning-based KT framework that leverages the xLSTM architecture to overcome the limitations of previous methods DKT2 is different from earlier models as it uses the Rasch model to improve input representation and incorporates Item Response Theory (IRT) for enhanced interpretability. By identifying familiar and unfamiliar knowledge, DKT2 offers a better representation of the state of learning in students. The use of xLSTM resolves the limitations of classical LSTMs through revisable storage decisions, increased memory capacity, and full parallelization, resulting in greater scalability and efficiency. The innovation allows the model to maintain robust applicability while providing better predictive accuracy than its counterparts.DKT2 adopts a systematic learning pipeline with Rasch embedding to record student-question interactions and include difficulty levels for better input representation. The xLSTM blocks use sLSTM and mLSTM to facilitate better memory retention, parallelization optimization, and dynamic knowledge updating. The IRT prediction and knowledge decomposition module separates familiar and unfamiliar knowledge to enable more interpretable knowledge tracing. Integrated knowledge fusion fuses historical knowledge states and predicted questions to create a comprehensive overview of student learning progress. The model is trained with binary cross-entropy loss and evaluated on three large-scale datasetsAssist17, EdNet, and Compto ensure robustness in real-world ITS applications.Extensive experiments on three large-scale datasets demonstrate that DKT2 consistently outperforms 17 baseline models across multiple prediction tasks, including one-step, multi-step, and varying-history-length predictions. It achieves higher accuracy, AUC, and lower RMSE compared to deep sequential models like DKT and attention-based models like AKT. The integration of xLSTM enhances parallelization and memory capacity, mitigating error accumulation in multi-step predictions, while the Rasch model and IRT improve interpretability by effectively distinguishing familiar and unfamiliar knowledge. An ablation study confirms that each component of DKT2 contributes significantly to its superior performance, particularly mLSTM, which is crucial for scalability in large-scale datasets. These results establish DKT2 as a robust and applicable solution for real-world Intelligent Tutoring Systems.DKT2 is a breakthrough in knowledge tracing by combining xLSTM, the Rasch model, and IRT to achieve a perfect balance between prediction accuracy and real-world usability. Through interpretable knowledge state generation and parallelized, memory-saving learning, the method guarantees scalability and improved personalization in ITS applications. Areas of future work include extending DKT2s applicability to ultra-large datasets and improving its multi-concept prediction ability to better support adaptive learning systems.Check out the Paper. • Efforts to erase the insurrection: Deletion of Jan. 6 database by Trump administration appears to violate federal law, watchdog says
    lawandcrime.com
Left: Jan. 6 rioters during the 2021 Capitol attack (Department of Justice). Right: President-elect Donald Trump arrives to speak at a meeting of the House GOP conference, Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon). The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a federal watchdog group, has penned an open letter to the Inspector General of the Department of Justice and the Archivist of the United States, urging them to take action and investigate the DOJs removal of its Jan. 6 database detailing criminal charges and convictions related to the 2021 Capitol attack which they call a likely violation of federal law.The Department of Justices removal of this vital information about its prosecutions arising from the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol is consistent with President Trumps ongoing efforts to rewrite or erase the insurrection, the CREW letter reads. We request that you promptly investigate this matter and take appropriate corrective action if necessary.Related Coverage:The DOJs database removal first came to light last week after PresidentDonald Trump issued his Jan. 6 pardons on his first day in office, with CNN reporting Sunday that only parts of the database were still accessible through the Internet Archive, while everything else was scrubbed clean. This is a huge victory for J6ers, wrote pardoned Jan. 6 rioter Brandon Straka on X.This site was one of countless weapons of harassment used by the federal government to make life impossible for its targets from J6, Straka said. The site included every accusation, and every charge leveled against people, including the ones they were not convicted of and were never substantiated in court, and would appear as the top ranking search result. In other words, every time a potential employer, landlord, new social or business contact, etc, would search somebody targeted for J6 they would read a dossier on each person filled with FBI and FOJ accusations and narratives that were never proven, along with links to documents with even more damaging allegations.According to CREWs letter, removing the Jan. 6 database appears to be a violation of 44 U.S.C. 3106 the unlawful removal or destruction of records which requires the head of each federal agency to notify the Archivist of the United States of any actual, impending, or threatened unlawful removal, defacing, alteration, corruption, deletion, erasure, or other destruction of records in the custody of the agency, per CREW.Implementing this requirement, NARA regulations provide that an agency must report promptly any unlawful or accidental removal, defacing, alteration, or destruction of records in the custody of that agency to NARA,' the groups letter says. The regulations also specify certain details the agency must include in its report to NARA. The knowing and willful destruction of federal records is a crime punishable by fines and up to three years of imprisonment.CREW claims that the Jan. 6 database clearly qualifies as a federal record as it documented the DOJs functions and decisions related to investigations and prosecutions related to the 2021 Capitol attack. The database must be managed as a federal record and its deletion is subject to the 3106 notice requirements, the letter to the DOJ says. Despite the agencys requirement to notify the archivist of the deletion of these records, there is no indication that they reported this matter to NARA, and a list of open unauthorized disposition cases on NARAs website does not reveal any such reporting.More from Law&Crime: What I did was ungodly: Jan. 6 rioter who caused deadly DUI crash while driving drunk on wrong side of highway goes from pardon to prisonWhile there may not be an online record anymore, at least one Jan. 6 judge Bill Clinton appointee Paul Friedman has decided to take matters into his own hands by creating his own 138-page list of Capitolriot defendants, which he attached to his most recent ruling granting a DOJ dismissal to rioter Christopher Warnagiris.Department of Justice chart documenting sentences in Capitol breach cases, the lists title reads. In addition to the DOJ database, the FBIs online record of individuals who were still wanted in connection with Jan. 6 also no longer exists. Attempts by Law&Crime to reach the DOJ and FBI for comment on Thursday were unsuccessful. Previous PostNext Post Previous PostNext Post You may also like:
