• Backed by Mayo Clinic, Nutrixs hardware monitors worker stress
    techcrunch.com
Stress isnt just bad for you its also bad for your employer. Factoring in absenteeism, diminished productivity, turnover, medical costs, and accidents, the non-profit American Institute of Stress estimates that workplace stress costs U.S. businesses over $300 billion annually. One way to measure stress is by monitoring cortisol levels. Even influencers know this, with cortisol face becoming a trending TikTok topic. But to approach things scientifically, the hormone needs to be measured throughout the day, because its variation that matters the most.By the end of the day, we should have the lowest levels, says Nutrix CEO Maria Hahn. Her companys newly unveiled hardware, CortiSense, which measures cortisol in saliva, recently won the CES Innovation Award 2025 in the Digital Health category.Providing patients with a device instead of having them go to a clinic isnt just more convenient; it also allows for tracking cortisol levels right after waking up, Hahn told TechCrunch.Developed with the support of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, CortiSense integrates with Nutrixs digital health platform, gSense, which includes a digital health platform, continuous glucose monitoring, AI-powered dietary management, and telemedicine. This also connects with Nutrixs initial focus: diabetes. While it pivoted its hardware roadmap towards CortiSense, the companys eye is still on chronic diseases. Cortisol is a hormone that controls many other hormones, so it plays an important role in mental health, but also metabolic health, the Switzerland-based entrepreneur said. This vision helped Nutrix gain support from Swiss innovation agency, Innosuisse, as well as private investment. The startup raised $4 million to date, including a previously unannounced $2.5 million seed round co-led by Polish impact fund Simpact and Japan deep tech fund OIST-Lifetime Ventures. Mayo Clinic also came on-board, after meeting the team at CES 2024.The startup is seeking to raise a large Series A round to fund its expansion, but its seed round has already kicked off the U.S. launch of CortiSense. With support from the Mayo Clinic, it is planning to open offices in Silicon Valley.Nutrix isnt new to market expansion; its gSense platform is integrated with the public insurance system in Chile, a country where it received support from public program, Start-Up Chile. In 2024, the Swiss health tech startup also launched operations in Mexico and Peru.Whats new for Nutrix, however, is the pushback over a model that targets corporations, rather than consumers. While less common in the U.S., in countries such as Chile, Mexico, and Peru, health screenings are part of an employers obligation to strive for employee wellness, with an understanding that private health data remains private. With the U.S. now at the top of Nutrixs CortiSense roadmap, Hahn will have to get used to clarifying the company will only get the aggregated data. And while a utilitarian pitch around the economic costs of job stress may seem distasteful to some, it may also serve as a reminder to employers that mental health is, indeed, health.Cortisol is, also extremely important in womens health, especially in the perimenopause and menopause, but its also a space that was very abandoned from the research and studies point of view, Hahn said. She now plans to use some of Nutrixs funding to conduct further investigations into these ties. For me as a woman, thats also very important, she said.Topics

  • HLW faces the McShane Campus Center at Fordham University with natural stone
    www.archpaper.com
Brought to you by:Architect: HLWLocation: New York CityCompletion Date: 2024Fordham Universitys latest addition is the McShane Campus Center, a 170,000-square-foot facility consolidating the schools fitness and student leisure programs into a single facility. Designed by HLW, the project stitches together three previously existing buildings through the addition of two glass arcade corridors and a new entrance facing the campus quad. This new street-facing elevation was designed to complement Fordhams collegiate gothic architecture and is clad in Fordham Gneiss, a banded metamorphic rock that was used to construct many of the institutions historic structures. Former exterior elevations are now located within the glass arcade of the McShane Campus Center. (Frank Oudeman)HLW introduced two perpendicular corridors to connect the McGinley Center, the campuss previous student center, to Fordhams two primary athletic facilities, the Rose Hill Gymnasium and Lombardi Center. The latter, which opened to students in 1976, was also designed by HLW. A new entrance and street-facing elevation was constructed on the lawn in front of the McGinley Center, facing the campus quad. The McShane Campus Center, located atop Rose Hill, is literally and figuratively the heart of the Rose Hill campus, serving as a beacon for students, administrators, and faculty, said Edward Stand, principal at HLW.An expanded fitness center, student lounge, and timber chapel are among the programs contained within the new facility. HLW worked to fill the corridors between these spaces with filtered natural light, which enters from skylights on the roof, highlighting the Rose Hill Gymnasiums historic stone masonry and the original barrel vault ceilings of the McGinley Center.HLW prioritized materiality and insulation when designing the McShane Centers facade. (Frank Oudeman)The buildings new exterior elevation was designed and detailed to match the existing architectural character of the Fordham campus. A composite facade system was specified to reduce material costs, with HLW cladding the building in precast concrete panels, Indiana limestone, and inserts of Fordham Gneiss. The proportions of the facade were adapted from the nearby Duane Library, a prime example of the campuss gothic architecture located just across the quad from the McShane Center. The facade of the McShane Center was also rigorously insulated, with the project targeting passive house certification. Ironically, given that the Campus Center is the most heavily trafficked building on the Rose Hill Campusthink of the pedestrian flow through Grand Central Terminalits a great design success in terms of its intent, but we could not quantitatively meet the Passive House requirements for certification as a result, added Stand. In addition, HLW worked with the New York State Historic Preservation Office to clean and restore elevations of the midcentury McGinley Center and the historic Rose Hill Gymnasium. The McShane Center also features a new chapel with timber furnishing. (Frank Oudeman)brandx, the HLWs wayfinding, signage, and branding group, planted easter eggs throughout the building referencing Fordhams history as one of New York Citys oldest institutions of higher education. These items include historical plaques with information about campus buildings, prints of old football posters and programs, neon depictions of the schools ram mascot, and hand drawn maps of the Bronx and Manhattan by artist Chanel Dehond, who also serves as the global director of brandx.HLW designed the McShane Campus Center to demonstrate a keen attention to Fordham Universitys history and traditions, while simultaneously preparing the institution for the future through its pursuit of ambitious energy goals.Project SpecificationsArchitect: HLWClient: Fordham UniversityMEP Engineer: Cameron Engineering & AssociatesStructural Engineer: Gasbarro Structural EngineeringEnvironmental Graphics: brandxLighting: Spark Studio Lighting DesignFire Protection Plans: Domani ConsultingSurveyor: East Coast ServicesSecurity, IT, AV, Acoustics: Shen Milsom & WilkeEnvelope & Passive House Consultant: SGHElevator: VDACode Consultant: Milrose ConsultantsGeotechnical Engineer: Rutledge Consulting EngineersGlass: ViraconCross & Corner Stone: Petrillo StoneLimestone: Indiana Limestone Fabricators

  • The best flip phones of 2025: Samsung, Motorola and more
    www.zdnet.com
Flip phones have resurrected in the past few years but in new form. Before phones became "phablets" and ditched physical front buttons for touch-capacitive screens, there was the humble flip phone with a T9 keyboard. Most people liked them because the idea of packing so much gadgetry into a compact unit invoked playfulness and wonder in equal parts. The new variants of flip phones keep the playfulness intact despite a missing T9 keyboard. With the introduction of foldable, brands have forayed into two form factors. First, book-style foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and OnePlus Open, which unfold to offer a tablet-like experience. Second, flip phones like the Motorola Razr and Galaxy Z Flip 6, which flip open into full-fledged phones. While one is for productivity, the other makes the modern smartphone more pocketable than ever.If you are looking for phones with the processing power to compete with the best slab phones on the market but want a more compact design, you should look at flip phones. The best flip phones offer a good cover screen experience, versatile camera setup, intuitive software perks and a battery backup that can get you through the day. What is the best flip phone right now?Samsung and Motorola are the top two brands making flip phones right now. Of all the flip phones I'vetested and reviewed, the Motorola Razr Plus (2024)is my pick for the best flip phone overall, just a hair above the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6. It's a tight race between the two, but the Razr Plus edges out with a more useful and larger outer display -- which is one of the main appeals of a modern-day flip phone -- as well as better battery life and faster charging. You can also find one for at least $100 cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy. At the time of writing this, the Razr+ is available for $780 on Amazon, making it an easy recommendation over the Samsung flip phone. See below for the full list of recommended picks. Samsung's platform is more limited in this regard, with some loopholes, like the Good Lock app, that require more tinkering. This year's under-the-hood upgrades are also meaningful, such as the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip optimized for AI workloads, the 12GB of RAM, and the larger 4,000mAh battery that can be charged wired (up to 45W) or wirelessly. Show more Factors to consider when choosing a phone The process of making our phone selections includes real-world testing and researching about the phones for weeks, consulting with colleagues, industry experts, and analysts who also have hands-on experience with the smartphones, and then selecting the best from all of the available choices.Ultimately, we weigh in the following aspects when curating this list:Design: The best-designed flip phones are practical to use, require a low to moderate learning curve, and should have a burdenless hand feel.Software optimization: A flip phone relies on more than just the standard software features of a traditional handset; it needs specialized tools and services built for the outer displays.Durability: The best flip phone can withstand a beating, whether that's in the form of waist-high drops or pouring rain. It helps when a device is certified IPX8 or IP52 or has been tested to meet above-average durability standards.Value: It's difficult to ignore how expensive flip phones can be, so price-to-performance is something deeply considered when evaluating between devices. Carrier store promotions, trade-in deals, and other offers are also factored in. Show more How we test phones ZDNET's review team spends upwards of a year testing the ins and outs of every major phone release, evaluating the day-to-day performance, camera quality, battery life and endurance, and special features. Here's a breakdown of every factor we consider before we make recommendations:Design and ergonomics:How good a phone looks and feels plays a big role in many users' buying journeys, so we consider these aspects heavily when testing.Performance:Several factors affect a phone's performance, including LTE/5G signal, battery life, and background tasks. Therefore, we typically begin our evaluations with a fully charged handset, with all background tasks closed, and with as stable of a mobile connection as possible.Camera quality:ZDNET tests phone cameras by capturing hundreds of photos and videos of various subjects and in various lighting conditions. We also compare the output to that of older models.Battery life and charging:It's also important for us to evaluate how long phones last under light, moderate, and heavy usage, how long they take to recharge, and how they do it (wired, wireless, or both).Special features:These features distinguish tested devices from a bustling smartphone market and hopefully bring added value to users, not the opposite.Pricing and availability:Beyond budget considerations, we also note if a phone is available in the US or only internationally. For a more extensive breakdown, check out our comprehensivephone testing methodology page. Show more Will Apple make a flip phone? • Medical Records Stolen As 1 Million Patients Hit By Healthcare Hack
    www.forbes.com
Community Health Center discloses massive patient data breach.gettyWith ransomware attacks reaching record numbers, and more than a billion stolen passwords for sale on the dark web, Im constantly amazed that there arent more data breaches, if Im honest. Not that it makes it any the less shocking when a healthcare provider discloses that the medical records of a million patients have been compromised. Heres what we know about the Community Health Center security incident.More Than A Million Medical Records StolenIn a Jan. 30 filing to the Office of the Maine Attorney General, Connecticut-based healthcare provider Community Health Center has disclosed a data breach, first discovered Jan. 2, has impacted more than a million patients following a successful attack by unknown threat actors who gained access to its networks. In a letter to impacted patients, seen by this reporter, Mark Masselli president and CEO at Community Health Center, Inc., said, that investigators had determined that a skilled criminal hacker got into our system and took some data, which might include your personal information. This doesnt appear to have been a ransomware attack, as Masselli said no data was deleted or encrypted, and the hack didnt impact healthcare operations. We believe we stopped the criminal hackers access within hours, Masselli said, and that there is no current threat to our systems. There is, however, the small matter of the files that the hacker stole: files containing patients personal and health information belonging to 1,060,936 individuals. The stolen data is understood to include:Patient NamesDates of BirthContact InformationSocial Security NumbersMedical DiagnosesTreatment DetailsTest ResultsHealth Insurance DetailsA Medical Records NightmareThis incident highlights the urgency of securing healthcare infrastructuresprotecting not just patient data, but the broader ecosystem of communication, collaboration, and care delivery, Emily Phelps, a director at Cyware, said, Incidents in this sector underscore the ongoing risks healthcare providers face, with attackers gaining access to sensitive data like names, medical diagnoses, and insurance details.Masselli, meanwhile, said that Community Health Center had strengthened our security and added special software to watch for suspicious activity, although this will be of cold comfort to those patients whose medical records have been compromised. Given that the attacker also has access to names, dates of birth and health insurance details, this could be an extortion nightmare waiting to unfold.

  • Shaping The Next Generation Of Cybersecurity Professionals
    www.forbes.com
TAMPA, FLORIDA - DECEMBER 31: Germie Bernard #5 of the Alabama Crimson Tide is tackled by Aamir Hall ... [+] #12 of the Michigan Wolverines during the second quarter in the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl at Raymond James Stadium on December 31, 2024 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Douglas P. DeFelice/Getty Images)Getty ImagesI am somewhat cynical when it comes to a lot of marketingespecially things like sponsoring sports teams or buying naming rights for stadiums. There is brand exposure for sure, but in my opinion, these things generally have more to do with the ego or the personal hobbies and interests of company leadership than actually moving the needle on marketing.ReliaQuest is different to me because they are not just putting their name on a college bowl game as a vanity play. They are also using the relationship to elevate cybersecurity awareness and taking action to address the escalating need for skilled cybersecurity professionals with its launch of a two-day Cyber Lab Bootcamp across universities participating in the ReliaQuest Bowl. This innovative program bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, offering students hands-on, immersive experiences that are pivotal for their professional growth. I sat down with Clifford Henderson, Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Alabamaone of the two universities that competed in this years ReliaQuest Bowl, to talk about the Cyber Lab Bootcamp program.Tackling the Cybersecurity Talent ShortageThe cybersecurity sector faces a critical talent shortage. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a 35% growth in demand for information security analysts through 2031, far outpacing the average for other professions. The reality is that there is no shortage of people eager to learn and excel in cybersecurity. The onus is on the cybersecurity industry to provide the training and opportunities to make that possible.MORE FOR YOUThis perspective emphasizes the importance of partnerships between industry and academia to build a strong pipeline of cybersecurity talent, ensuring the industry remains resilient in the face of evolving threats.Henderson underscores the importance of this partnership, stating, You always have to ask, what are you hoping to get out of it, right, with whatever audience you're reaching? For us, this program is an incredible way to expose students to cybersecurity career paths they might not have considered before.A Decade of Investment in EducationReliaQuest, a global cybersecurity company that offers an AI-driven security operations platform based in Florida, has long prioritized cybersecurity education. Over the past decade, its ReliaQuest Labs program has provided students with the chance to engage in real-world cybersecurity challenges and technologies. Conducted in partnership with the University of South Florida (USF), the program has successfully prepared over 350 graduates, many of whom have gone on to join the company. Building on this foundation, the Cyber Lab Bootcamp condenses the essence of this program into a dynamic two-day experience.By integrating the bootcamp into the ReliaQuest Bowl, the company is leveraging the events visibility to inspire students and highlight the importance of cybersecurity careers. This approach not only raises awareness but also positions ReliaQuest as a leader in addressing the talent gap.Merging Sports and CybersecurityPairing the Cyber Lab Bootcamp with the ReliaQuest Bowl is a masterstroke in reaching a diverse and engaged audience. Sporting events bring together students, alumni, and fans, creating a unique platform to showcase the role of cybersecurity in everyday life. By demonstrating how technology intersects with sports, the company is inspiring students who may never have considered a career in cybersecurity to explore this dynamic field. This innovative blend of sports and technology highlights how seemingly unrelated industries can collaborate to address pressing challenges. The approach serves as a model for other sectors seeking to expand workforce opportunities while capturing public attention. As Henderson explains, We see companies marketing to students all the time, but very few engage in a way that directly benefits students' futures. ReliaQuest is using the bowl game as a gateway to introduce cybersecurity as a career path to students who might not have otherwise been exposed to it.Mentorship: A Cornerstone of SuccessA standout feature of the Cyber Lab Bootcamp is its mentorship component. Students gain invaluable insights by working directly with seasoned cybersecurity professionals. This hands-on guidance accelerates learning, builds confidence, and establishes vital connections that can shape their career paths.ReliaQuests track record with mentorship through its full-length labs program underscores the power of this approach. Many participants credit their mentors with helping them refine their skills and transition smoothly into professional roles. Embedding mentorship into the bootcamp ensures students receive a holistic learning experience that extends beyond technical expertise.A Long-Term Vision for Workforce DevelopmentThe Cyber Lab Bootcamp is part of a broader, long-term strategy to close the cybersecurity talent gap. ReliaQuest is committed to sustained innovation in training programs and advocacy efforts to encourage diverse participation in cybersecurity. The company actively supports initiatives aimed at increasing representation from underrepresented groups, reinforcing that inclusivity and collaboration are key to solving the industrys challenges.Strategic Partnerships for Maximum ImpactReliaQuests partnership with the ReliaQuest Bowl amplifies the reach and impact of its educational initiatives. By aligning the bootcamp with a high-profile event, the company engages students from varied academic backgrounds, encouraging exploration of cybersecurity careers. This strategy not only broadens the talent pool but also reinforces the critical role cybersecurity plays in todays interconnected world.Success Stories and Future AspirationsThe success of ReliaQuest Labs at USF provides a blueprint for the Cyber Lab Bootcamps potential impact. Alumni of the program consistently praise its ability to bridge the gap between theory and practice, preparing them for real-world challenges. Many have transitioned seamlessly into roles at ReliaQuest, contributing to its mission of safeguarding global cybersecurity.Looking ahead, ReliaQuest envisions refining and expanding the bootcamp model. Future iterations may include deeper dives into specialized areas, virtual components for broader accessibility, and additional partnerships with educational institutions. These enhancements aim to create a lasting ripple effect, inspiring other organizations to adopt similar models to tackle the global talent shortage.Building a Resilient Cybersecurity FutureReliaQuests Cyber Lab Bootcamp exemplifies how private organizations can drive meaningful change in workforce development. By combining immersive training, mentorship, and the visibility of the ReliaQuest Bowl, the company is setting a new standard for industry-led educational initiatives.I think we look at these kind of programs, you know, as a real win for both sides. Its great for our students, summed up Henderson. Its one thing to just come in and teach material, but it's another thing to also talk about the career, and what all the different options and paths are.As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, programs like the Cyber Lab Bootcamp will play a vital role in equipping the next generation of professionals to meet these challenges head-on and lay the foundation for a safer, more resilient digital future.

  • Google offers "voluntary exit" plan with severance pay for Pixel and Android employees
    www.techspot.com
In brief: A leaked internal memo has revealed that Google is offering voluntary exit packages for employees working on the Pixel and Android teams it recently merged. Those not fully vibing with the new combined division can take a severance and peace out. In an internal memo, Google SVP of Platforms & Devices Rick Osterloh announced that the voluntary separation program applies only to US-based staff. It's aimed at those working on products like Pixel phones, Android, Chrome OS, Google Photos, Nest smart home devices, and the Fitbit wearables line. The severance offers follow Google's move to merge its Pixel hardware group with the Android software team, forming a single Platforms & Devices arm last October. According to Osterloh's memo, the voluntary exit path is for any employees who may not be fully aligned with the unified division's new mission or are struggling with their roles or hybrid work requirements following the reorganization. As 9to5Google notes, Google will provide severance packages to anyone who asks, with more details to be shared internally soon. Interestingly, the voluntary exits are not tied to specific product roadmap changes.Cutting costs has been a priority lately for Google's new CFO, Anat Ashkenazi, who took over the position last October. During a recent earnings call, she emphasized the importance of "driving further efficiencies" across Alphabet's operations.Google has recently seen its Pixel smartphone sales reach new highs. Analysts from Counterpoint Research reported record volumes for the lineup in Q3 2024. Sadly, good performance doesn't necessarily relieve an industry-wide trend to trim costs and streamline operations. // Related StoriesGoogle's hardware division has also been no stranger to restructuring and layoffs. In January 2024, the Pixel/Nest/Fitbit teams underwent an organizational overhaul, moving to a unified hardware engineering structure. Google eliminated a few hundred roles in that sweep.Of course, any significant brain drain from the exodus could create some short-term disruptions. For Google, taking this passive approach to rightsizing its combined Pixel/Android team rather than broad layoffs is the wisest path forward.

  • Apple reports record quarter despite iPhone sales dip
    www.techspot.com
What just happened? Apple has reported its best quarter ever, with revenue reaching $124.3 billion, a 4 percent increase from the previous year. The tech giant saw growth across most of its divisions, including Mac, iPad, and services. However, iPhone revenue experienced a slight year-over-year decline, raising questions about the impact of Apple Intelligence on device sales. CEO Tim Cook addressed concerns about Apple Intelligence's influence on upgrades during an interview with CNBC, stating that markets where Apple Intelligence had been rolled out showed stronger year-over-year performance for the iPhone 16 family compared to markets without the feature."We think Apple Intelligence gives customers another compelling reason to upgrade," said Kevan Parekh, Apple's new CFO.Despite these assurances from Apple's top executives, the slight dip in iPhone revenue suggests that Apple Intelligence may not be driving significant upgrades. The holiday quarter, typically Apple's most crucial, saw iPhone sales fall by nearly 1 percent to $69.1 billion, missing analyst projections of $70.7 billion. This decline comes despite the release of the iPhone 16 lineup, which was available for the entire three-month period. The standard iPhone 16 models likely contributed to the lower revenue, as fewer customers opted for the more expensive Pro variants.Apple's total revenue for the quarter reached $124.3 billion, a 4 percent increase from the previous year, while net income rose by more than 7 percent to $36.3 billion. The company's services business, including App Store transactions and subscription services, grew by 13.9 percent to $26.3 billion, slightly exceeding analyst estimates. However, Apple faced challenges in China, its second-largest market, where sales dropped by more than 11 percent to $18.5 billion, falling short of the expected $20.9 billion. Third-party estimates had predicted a nearly 10 percent year-over-year decrease in iPhone shipments in China during the fourth quarter. // Related StoriesAnother potential problem for Apple is its manufacturing operations in China and the prospect that the new Trump Administration may levy import tariffs.During Trump's previous term, Apple successfully secured exemptions from Chinese import tariffs, a feat attributed in part to CEO Tim Cook's cultivation of a relationship with President Trump. With Cook's recent attendance at his inauguration, industry analysts speculate that Cupertino will be able to secure similar tariff exemptions this time around. But the company's cautious approach to AI-powered features appears to be vexing many shareholders and analysts, as Apple Intelligence was only recently enabled by default with the release of iOS 18.3. They are expressing concern about the lack of compelling features to drive iPhone demand. Moreover, the company's AI rollout has been slower than some users expected, with certain features experiencing glitches, such as incorrect notification summaries.Other investors are taking a more sanguine view. "We'd been hoping that the initial set of AI features might be something to drive new enthusiasm, but what's available out there isn't surprising and delighting consumers yet," Charles Rinehart, chief investment officer at Johnson Investment Counsel, which holds Apple shares, told The Wall Street Journal. "There's nothing here to make us think that won't happen eventually."
