DACHs venture capital prominence: an outlier, or the start of a golden age?
Switzerland can officially boast the worlds fastest growing venture capital (VC) ecosystem, with only Dubai and Singapore preventing Austria from making it a DACH double at the top. An exciting tech sector has undoubtedly contributed to these impressive regional rankings, but those at the heart of both ecosystems have slightly differing views on how sustainable the growth is.Pitchbooks annual Global venture capital ecosystem rankings for 2024 revealed the perhaps surprising ascent of Austria and especially Switzerland. Despite both countries sitting much further down the broader development scores, the country growth index framed both countries among the top tier, with Switzerland at the summit. At first glance, the news reflects a concerted period of success for startups and scaleups in the DACH region, which would seem to bode well for the future too.Yet growth is relative. And regardless of the positive grounding and traits that both share, there are differing opinions on whether this growth will now drive Switzerland and Austria to the top of the VC Development rankings as more entrenched and embedded powerhouses.Switzerland and Austria have fostered thriving startup ecosystems, largely thanks to their strong academic hubs, such as ETH Zurich, says Markus Gleim, principal at renowned global VC fund Northzone. These institutions have a consistent track record of producing top-tier talent and cutting-edge spin-outs such as AI innovators LogicStar. And, as a result, both nations have been able to carve out strong niches in deep technological sectors like medtech and cleantech. However, while signs of growth have been promising, to sustain this momentum both regions will need to create an environment that allows their emerging cohort of startups to become stable, high-growth companies.Addressing late-stage funding gaps and leveraging cross-border partnerships within the DACH region will help startups scale internationally. Even closer collaborations between universities and industry will also help prolong the growth of these startup hubs, he adds.Gleims vision for that transition from scaleup to global, high-growth company can, in part, be remedied through these more practical, collaborative steps. However, Felix Ohswald, CEO and co-founder at education gamechanger GoStudent, believes there is also a mindset element to address. To this end, he poses that the success of GoStudent itself has partially contributed to an outlier period which has launched the companys native Austria towards the top of the VC growth rankings.I was a bit surprised when I read that Austria is one of the fastest growing countries in this context, he says. It needs to be understood in terms of your starting size, so when you then have some very big financing rounds for companies in a smaller ecosystem, the relative growth is proportionally higher. You can also then see this doesnt equate to the wider development scores. The 2018-2024 period has been a bit of an outlier.Ohswald is quick to emphasise that this isnt to undermine the success of companies that have risen to prominence during this period, or even to downplay the success of the regional VC ecosystem in capitalising on these opportunities. His only concern is that the default DACH mindset may now prevent the region from leveraging these successes and to demand more sustainable competitiveness. These past few years in both Austria and Switzerland it has been proved how many great people, ideas and companies there are in these environments, he adds. But that just means we can grow and ignite more of these companies more frequently. It all starts with the drive and mindset. This needs to come from the very top, with country leaders who are proud to not only support and spark new companies, but to push them to be the best globally. This is independent of socio-economic circumstances and, even to an extent, from the leading academic frameworks we have here, Ohswald adds. Mindset means having something in you to build better, faster. Less red tape and bureaucracy can certainly help to then speed things up, and why not elevate our education institutions even further? What this ranking shows, if nothing else, is that we have all the ingredients here to be the best. So, lets not be shy in aiming for that. Not everybody has to be good at everything. The mindset shift Id be looking for is to promote an elite ecosystem that encourages the best minds here, that pushes the best to the top, and that then has all those favourable conditions to push these cool ideas out to the world to benefit as many people as possible. While everyone is keen to capitalise on recent growth, there are some within the DACH ecosystem who foresaw this golden age long before. In particular, Andre Retterath, partner at Earlybird Venture Capital, predicted a European-wide purple patch driven by talent, collaboration, funding, success stories and interestingly mindset. The rankings and Switzerland being at the top in particular, came as no real surprise to me, he says. I completely agree with the relativity element as they both have small denominators in terms of funding, against a situation where lots of big funding then came into the country. What doesnt surprise me, however, is that the money did come. The region houses so much great research, access to industry and especially big tech, and is in close proximity to ecosystems in Germany, France and the UK. The only surprise is that so little funding came into the ecosystem before.Retterath has comprehensively explored and dissected the notion of ecosystems, and deduces that a successful golden age relies on different components coming together in harmony: Smart minds, seamless business formulation, and a collaborative environment.Beyond these factors, hes also keen not to compare countries such as Switzerland and Austria to the likes of Dubai and Singapore, who split the two DACH entries in Pitchbooks Growth scores. The other element a successful VC ecosystem needs is its own personality, he affirms. What makes us great? Look at ETH Zurich or EPFL, the Swiss Federal Technology Institute of Lausanne. These are top academic institutions. Then look at the regions history with big tech, or with finance, or medtech. Look at their socio-economic groundings. Its a great place to live or to relocate to very clean, neutral, highly ambitious. To me, the strength of the DACH VC ecosystem is the DACH region itself. Its own personality and capabilities. Singapore and Dubai are great for their own reasons, but Id say our fundamentals are as naturally suited to startup success and VC activity, as any.The potential of DACHs VC ecosystem is doubtless. From those within and those looking in, the only disagreement is around whether the recent ascent in the global context was inevitable or not. For some, like Gleim and Ohswald, recent success stories are a sign of what could be, but are in danger of remaining outliers if both Austria and Switzerland dont actively strive to convert growth into longer-term development. For others, DACH has been a sleeping giant, with its tech prowess and VC support finally combining to put Austria and Switzerland in the global consciousness.Alan Poensgen, partner at Antler, a global VC fund targeting zero day investments, concludes: Both the Swiss and Austrian ecosystems have always been promising, yet, historically, many successful founders left once their startups reached a certain stage other ecosystems with proximity to larger pools of talent or capital were too attractive.Lately, weve seen the flywheel in both ecosystems begin to spin faster: more innovation, more exits, more liquidity, human capital moving through, Zurich outperforming even Cambridge when it comes to unicorn founders.Regardless of what the future has in store, everyone agrees that there is reason to be excited right now. All the ingredients are there. The question is, has the golden age only just begun?Read more about tech innovation in Austria and Switzerland

Wife Of LA Rams Matthew Stafford Talks Sleep, Flu, Wildfires And Self-Care

Just days leading up to Super Bowl LIX, the wife of LA Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and the mother of four daughters under the age of seven opened up about the Staffords partnership with Sleep Number, her familys recent battle with the flu, their escape from the LA wildfires and the importance of asking for help.Good Sleep Is A Game-ChangerGood sleep has helped our marriage, reveals the Georgia native, adding that its been a game-changer.Stafford acknowledges what scientists have long said about sleep deprivation: irritability, arguments with her husband, mental health struggles and taking out her frustration on her kids are commonly associated with poor sleep.I appreciate Staffords honesty and vulnerability. Shes not alone. When it comes to poor sleep habits, an estimated 50 to 70 million Americans have chronic sleep disorders.Kelly Stafford, mother of four young daughters, relies on a strong support system including extended ... In fact, studies have clearly associated poor sleep with several chronic conditions including heart disease, stroke, cancer and dementia.Lack of sleep also adversely impacts athletic performance. Increased risk of injury and decreased endurance, accuracy and reaction time are just a few ways that reduced sleep hurts players like Matthew Stafford. Its not just the pros who are affected. Sleep deficiency is associated with increased falls, broken bones, car crash injuries and death in adults, teens and children.Good sleep hygiene can reduce the risk of developing chronic illnesses such as heart disease, ... Good sleep hygiene includes going to bed at the same time every night, avoiding heavy meals or caffeine several hours before bedtime and using the bed for only sleep and sexno television, reading, phone or other devices. How much sleep is enough? The NIH recommends seven to eight hours of sleep each night for adults. The key is to aim for quantity AND high-quality sleep.Support Systems Are KeyStafford openly credits many individuals who help her deal with daily stressors. I am blessed with an incredible support system in my extended family, shares the podcast host. In their early years, a woman named Tatiana saved me and made it possible for the Staffords to raise young children in a city where they had no family. She also praises her NFL star husband for his calm demeanor and being the reason she can get through it all.Relying on a solid support system is crucial for our mental and physical health. Decreased stress, improved emotional and fewer physical health problems are just some of the benefits of leaning on others. But people still hesitate asking for help, especially women who are judged differently by society, according to Stafford. Women, indeed, face a double-standard to be perfect and to hide their pain with a smile. I feel like our society shames women for asking for help and I hate that. Women need to be able to ask for help and receive it. I couldnt agree more with Stafford on this issue. Asking for help is neither a weakness nor a luxury, but a necessity.Fires And The FluA firefighter monitors the spread of the Auto Fire in Oxnard, North West of Los Angeles, California. ... She asked that people give whatever they can as the community continues to struggle. Stafford also imparts tremendous praise on the first responders in L.A. who are the heroes, and we dont ever thank them enough. The mother of four young girls had also shared a frightening experience with influenza. She and two of her daughters were very ill from the viral infection. Thankfully, they are all healthy now. But its a good reminder to all that it is still respiratory viral season, and the best way to protect ourselves from RSV, COVID-19 and influenza is by staying home if youre sick, washing hands and getting vaccinated (if eligible). If youre sick but need to go out, then wear a mask and practice distancing. As we head into Super Bowl weekend, I will wear my doctor-hat and reiterate Kelly Staffords health message to get high-quality sleep, practice self-care and ask for helpfrom serving appetizers to cleaning up after the game!

ChatGPT Search Is Now Free To Use Without An AccountIs It Safe?
Open AIs ChatGPT search is now available to everyone, for free, even without an account. NurPhoto via Getty ImagesOpen AIs ChatGPT search is now available to everyone, for free, even without an account. Its a major move that makes ChatGPT available to a wider audience and it might persuade those who dont want to create an account just yet to use the service. There are many reasons for not wanting to set up a ChatGPT account and privacy is one of them. It should, in theory, limit the data that OpenAI can collect. But does this move actually make it safer and how do you protect your privacy when using ChatGPT search? What Is ChatGPT Search?ChatGPT search is an extension of ChatGPT with the ability to pull up real time, up to date information from the web. This differs from ChatGPT which answers questions based on the data on which its been most recently trained, an article in Vice explains.OpenAI describes the tool as follows: Now, chat can get you to a better answer: Ask a question in a more natural, conversational way, and ChatGPT can choose to respond with information from the web. Go deeper with follow-up questions, and ChatGPT will consider the full context of your chat to get a better answer for you.MORE FOR YOUIn December, OpenAI made ChatGPT search available to all logged-in users in regions where ChatGPT is available. However, it has now opened up to everyone, regardless of whether you have an account. As of February 5, 2025 ChatGPT search is now available to everyone, with no signup required, according to OpenAI.Unlike traditional search engines that primarily process your search queries, ChatGPTs interaction model is fundamentally different, says Angus Allan, senior product manager at CreateFuture. It maintains a conversation context, which means it's not just processing individual searches, but building a comprehensive understanding of your dialogue and generating personalised content in real time.By allowing users to express their questions in natural language, ChatGPT search can be an incredibly powerful tool to access information, he says. What Are The Risks Of Using ChatGPT Search?Using AI tools requires a lot of data, which can compromise your security and privacy, even if you are not signed in. OpenAI providing this service for free should indicate to savvy internet users that OpenAI is extracting some kind of value whether youre signed in or not, says Dr Andrew Bolster, senior research and development manager, data science at Black Duck.Adding to this, there is no verification of where, how, or what data is stored, processed, or used, says Josh Hickling, principal consultant at Pentest People. Sensitive details entered into the system could be stored outside the U.S. and U.K., remain unencrypted at rest, and be linked to a user account. If storage were ever compromised, data could potentially be traced back to a client, making users a target by association. This increases the risk of further attacks or targeting.Another problem whether you are signed in or not is misinformation ethics. This includes the concept of AI hallucination and how it might generate answers that are less accurate or almost a reflection of your own perspective rather than presenting the facts, says Manon Dave, an AI futurist.ChatGPT search has also been found to be vulnerable to manipulation by malicious third parties, using a method known as prompt injection, where text is hidden in a webpage and used by the tool instead of the normal site content, says Chelsea Hopkins, social media and PR manager at Fasthosts. This is because rather than giving a list of results for a query as you would do on Google, ChatGPT search gives you answers much like the standard model of ChatGPT would, however this time pulling data in real time rather than from a pre-existing bank of information. How Do The Risks Of ChatGPT Search Compare To Google Search? In Google Search, results are ranked based on Googles search algorithm, which considers hundreds of factors, such as authority, SEO optimisation, and similar, says This can result in more tailored responses but may lack direct attribution to specific sources. Neither approach is inherently better or worse, it depends on the actual users need, says Sowa. For general searches where a definitive source isnt crucial, GPT Search may provide more concise and context-aware answers, he concedes. However, when the credibility and traceability of information are crucial, Google Search should remain the preferred choice. While Google primarily tracks your search patterns and browsing behavior, ChatGPT processes and potentially retains entire conversations, says Allan. This means that if you inadvertently share sensitive information in the context of a conversation, it becomes part of that interaction history. Is ChatGPT Search Safer To Use If You Dont Sign In?Think ChatGPT search will be safe if you arent signed in? It might be a bit, but there are caveats, experts say. While using ChatGPT search without signing in does provide a layer of anonymity, ironically, it stops you from being able to opt out of model training, says Allan. According to OpenAIs privacy policy, only users with an account can opt out of model training, meaning if you dont sign in you have even less control over how your data is used.Avoid inputting sensitive data regardless, Sowa advises. Unauthenticated options should be treated with the same caution as an authenticated account. Organisations the size of OpenAI could more than likely connect the dots from various fingerprints and over time, correlate prompts to individuals if they really wanted to.By not signing in to ChatGPT search, the tool wont have a specific account to tie your prompts and details to, and so is therefore likely to be safer to use, says Hopkins. However, it still does store information such as device data, operating system information, and your IP address. This could all be used to link your conversation history with ChatGPT to you but its worth noting that this is all data that other search engines will be collecting as well.I asked ChatGPT owner OpenAI for a comment on this story and will update it if the firm responds.Boosting Privacy And Security While Using ChatGPT SearchBut youll be happy to hear, there are ways to boost privacy and security when using ChatGPT search. The best thing to do if youre worried about privacy or security is what you may already do if youre a conscientious browser user, says Dave. That is, use Incognito or Private browsing sessions to protect yourself from sharing context beyond the active session and a VPN if youd like to anonymise your machine and your location. And if you do decide to create an account and login, make sure you use a password manager such as the Passwords App on Apple devices, or LastPass, to create secure login details and activate any two factor authentication options available, says Dave.To enhance your privacy while using ChatGPT search, be aware of its limitations, says Allan. Dont share personal identifiable information, for example, you dont need to overshare or provide specific personal details to provide helpful responses. Second, if youre using it for professional purposes, establish clear guidelines about what information can be shared. Dont share trade secrets, and generalise your queries where possible. Is ChatGPT Search Safe?So is ChatGPT search safe to use since you dont have to sign in? The answer is, its complicated. Yet it is possible to protect yourself, if you are careful about the data you enter in to it and use security and privacy tools available to you.

Nvidia cuts RTX 4060 supply ahead of rumored RTX 5060 launch in March
Rumor mill: With the GeForce RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti set to launch later this month, attention is turning toward Nvidia's future entries in the Blackwell line, namely the RTX 5060 series. According to reports, Team Green has started limiting the supply of RTX 4060 chips to manufacturing partners, a strong indication that the successor could arrive around the rumored March window. According to a report on the Board Channels forums, which features PC-related stories from sources close to supply chains and AIC partners in Asia, Nvidia has started reducing RTX 4060 supply as of February. If true, Nvidia will be slashing RTX 4060/Ti supply to AIC brand manufacturers by 60% compared to what they received in the fourth quarter of 2024. The reduction relates to the Asian region, but Nvidia would be expected to expand this change globally. The RTX 4060 hasn't seen noticeable price drops recently, a common sign of an upcoming successor as Nvidia clears inventory. However, price reductions may still occur soon. The RTX 4060 series is one of the most popular lineups among Steam survey participants. The laptop version is the second most common GPU in the chart, with the desktop variant in third place and the RTX 4060 Ti in fifth. It wouldn't be surprising to see the desktop 4060 eventually replace the RTX 3060 as the top GPU among participants. The RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti are both rumored to launch in March priced at $329 and $419, respectively. It's also claimed that the cards won't use 16-pin power connectors, sticking instead with the standard 8-pin connectors found in the RTX 4060 and RTX 4060 Ti.However, unlike the current-gen RTX 4060 and 4060 Ti, the RTX 5060 series is said to require at least a 650W power supply, up from the 550W needed for its predecessors. The memory configurations will likely carry over to the new generation 8GB for the 5060, and 16GB/8GB versions for the 5060 Ti except the Blackwells will use GDDR7. // Related StoriesThe RTX 5000 series is proving to be a major disappointment in the eyes of most gamers. If you want an even better illustration of why, check out our feature: Nvidia's RTX 5080 is Actually an RTX 5070.

Windows 10's extended support starts at $61 per device, Microsoft reveals new details
What just happened? As the clock ticks down to the official end of support for Windows 10 this October, Microsoft is encouraging users to upgrade to its latest operating system, Windows 11. But, as promised, it is also offering a path to those who wish to stick with the familiar Windows 10 environment. The problem? That path has turned out to be an expensive one. In a recently updated support document, Microsoft has revealed new details about its Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for Windows 10. This program aims to provide critical security updates for users who are not ready to make the leap to Windows 11. However, this extended support comes at a price, which may cause some organizations to reconsider their IT strategies. The ESU program will be available for devices running Windows 10 version 22H2, with costs starting at $61 per device for the first year of coverage, from November 2025 to November 2026.Microsoft has also announced that these costs will double annually, with the program capped at three years. It's a pricing structure that seems designed to encourage eventual migration to Windows 11, rather than indefinite reliance on an aging operating system. The update confirms that the ESU program is cumulative, meaning that if an organization joins in the second year, it will be required to pay for the previous year's coverage as well. However, Microsoft has thrown some users a bone: Windows 10 virtual machines running in Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop will receive ESUs at no additional charge, a benefit for organizations heavily invested in Microsoft's cloud services. The company emphasizes that while Windows 10 PCs will continue to function after the end-of-support date, upgrading to Windows 11 is strongly recommended for "the best, most secure computing experience."But user adoption tells a different story. According to the latest data from Statcounter, Windows 10 continues to dominate the market with a 60.37 percent share of Windows installations. Windows 11, despite Microsoft's efforts, has only recently seen an uptick in adoption, reaching 36.6 percent in January 2025. This represents a notable increase from 34.12 percent the previous month, which is likely driven by the impending end of Windows 10 support. // Related StoriesThe narrowing gap between Windows 10 and Windows 11 usage is likely a welcome sight for Microsoft's OS team. However, the persistence of Windows 10's market dominance highlights Microsoft's challenges in convincing users to embrace the change.

This excellent game about waiting is the anti-WarioWare
How much of your life is spent waiting? Think about it. Waiting at the DMV, waiting for a train, waiting for an important phone call, waiting for your perpetually late friend to show up, waiting to grow up. Life is a long endurance test of patience.Thats the simple thesis of While Waiting, a new puzzle game thats deceptively emotional. On paper, it sounds like a one-note gag. It features 100 bite-sized levels, each tossing players into a familiar life experience that requires some form of waiting. Its like the anti-WarioWare, swapping five second microgames for drawn out ones that require virtually no reaction time. Dont let that light premise take your guard down, though: While Waiting is an ingenious bit of video game storytelling thatll stick with you so long as youve got the patience to see it through.Recommended VideosWhile Waiting is unassuming at first. Im quickly tossed into levels with mundane objectives. One requires me to wait for the bus, milling around for a few minutes until it arrives. Another has me waiting for commercials to pass on TV. Each level can be completed by doing absolutely nothing. Its a high-concept idea that might leave you wondering just how much a studio can do with that premise. While Waiting - Launch TrailerA lot, it turns out. For one, each level has a couple of objectives players can complete while waiting. In one puzzle, Im a kid waiting for Santa Claus to deliver presents on Christmas. I can just lay in bed and pretend to sleep for a few minutes if I want, earning me a badge for simply waiting. I can also get out of bed and mess with the big guy by turning on my fireplace or switching out my stocking. Others are more imaginative. When Im waiting for a rainstorm to pass, I can dip into a cafe and look out the window, which becomes a screen on which I can play an arcade game with the falling raindrops. Each level is a clever surprise that gives me a reason to replay them and find each hidden objective.RelatedThats not what makes While Waiting special, though. The deeper it goes, the more its narrative ambitions come into view. I soon realize that Im not just playing through random scenarios; Im following a character through his entire life. I start out as a kid, goofing around at home with my parents and sitting through school days. I cant wait to grow up, and I do after about 30 levels. Then, Im a college student waiting for my independence. Soon, Im the same age that my parents were when I started. What begins as a gimmick quickly evolves into a full life portrait told through small moments.Im sure you can guess what it all builds to.OptillusionWhile Waitings strength lies in how well it balances absurdity, beauty, and tragedy throughout its 100 levels. It has the comedic bent of Thank Goodness Youre Here, but the grounded emotions of Florence. Those two ideas are symbiotic. Early on, Im laughing at what a devilish piece of game design it is. Each level is a torture trap that plays with my impatience. I cant wait to blow through them and see whats next. But at some point, I become aware of the passage of time. My character is getting older. His life is more complicated. People in his life are dying. His kid is growing up too fast. As the levels progress, I start praying that theyll move slower. Why did I spend so much of my time here waiting for my sweet childhood moments to end?Thats the heart of While Waiting: Its a story about not taking life for granted. It sees no difference between the big moments and the small ones. Everything, from waiting for your wife to give birth to waiting for an elevator, is precious. Theyre fleeting seconds that well never get back. Its not nihilistic about that. Rather, it cherishes every moment it can, no matter how insignificant it may seem. While Waiting requires a lot of patience to get there, but thats the point. The wait is the journey. While Waiting is available now on Nintendo Switch and PC.Editors Recommendations

    Return of the California Condor
Soaring Return of the California Condor North Americas largest bird disappeared from the wild in the late 1980s. Ivan Crrillo, Knowable Magazine Feb 7, 2025 10:08 am | 13 Credit: OldFulica/Getty Credit: OldFulica/Getty Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreThe spring morning is cool and bright in the Sierra de San Pedro Mrtir National Park in Baja California, Mexico, as a bird takes to the skies. Its 9.8-foot wingspan casts a looming silhouette against the sunlight; the sound of its flight is like that of a light aircraft cutting through the wind. In this forest thick with trees up to 600 years old lives the southernmost population of the California condor (Gymnogyps californianus), the only one outside the United States. Dozens of the scavenging birds have been reintroduced here, to live and breed once again in the wild.Their return has been captained for more than 20 years by biologist Juan Vargas Velasco and his partner Mara Catalina Porras Pea, a couple who long ago moved away from the comforts of the city to endure extreme winters living in a tent or small trailer, to manage the lives of the 48 condors known to fly over Mexican territory. Togethershe as coordinator of the California Condor Conservation Program, and he as field managerthey are the guardians of a project whose origins go back to condor recovery efforts that began in the 1980s in the United States, when populations were decimated, mainly from eating the meat of animals shot by hunters lead bullets. In Mexico, the species disappeared even earlier, in the late 1930s. Its historic returnthe first captive-bred condors were released into Mexican territory in 2002is the result of close binational collaboration among zoos and other institutions in the United States and Mexico.Beyond the number on the wing that identifies each individual, Porras Pea knows perfectly the history and behavior of the condors under her care. She recognizes them without needing binoculars and speaks of them as one would speak of the lives of friends. She captures her knowledge in an Excel log: a database including information such as origin, ID tag, name, sex, age, date of birth, date of arrival, first release and number in the Studbook (an international registry used to track the ancestry and offspring of each individual of a species through a unique number). Also noted is wildlife status, happily marked for most birds with a single word: Free. Names such as Galan, Nera, Pai Pai, La Querida, Celestino and El Patriota stand out in the record. The California condor, North Americas largest bird, has taken flight again. Its a feat made possible by well-established collaborations between the US and Mexico, economic investment, the dedication of many people and, above all, the scientific understanding of the speciesfrom the decoding of its genome and knowledge of its diseases and reproductive habits to the use of technologies that can closely follow each individual bird. But many challenges remain for the California condor, which 10,000 years ago dominated the skies over the Pacific coast of the Americas, from southern Canada to northern Mexico. Researchers need to assemble wild populations that are capable of breeding without human assistance, and with the confidence that more birds are hatched than die. It is a tough battle against extinction, waged day in and day out by teams in California, Arizona and Utah in the United States, and Mexico City and Baja California in Mexico.A shift in approach to conservationThe US California Condor Recovery Program, initiated in the 1970s, represented an enormous change in the strategy of species conservation. After unsuccessful habitat preservation attempts, and as a last-ditch attempt to try to save the scavenger bird from extinction, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Fish and Game Commission advocated for a decision as bold as it was controversial: to capture the last condors alive in the wild and commit to breeding them in captivity. Some two dozen condors sacrificed their freedom in order to save their lineage. On April 19, 1987, the last condor was captured, marking a critical moment for the species: On that day, the California condor became officially extinct in the wild.At the same time, a captive breeding program was launched, offering a ray of hope for a species that, beyond its own magnificence, plays an important role in the health of ecosystemsefficiently eliminating the remains of dead animals, thus preventing the proliferation of diseases and environmental pollution. This is what is defined as a refaunation project, says Rodolfo Dirzo, a Stanford University biologist. Its the flip side to the term defaunation that he and his colleagues coined in a 2014 article in Science to refer to the global extinction or significant losses of an animal species. Defaunation today is widespread: Although animal diversity is the highest in the planets history, modern vertebrate extinction rates are up to 100even 1,000times higher than in the past (excepting cataclysmic events causing mass extinctions, such as the meteorite that killed off the dinosaurs), Dirzo and colleagues explain in an article in the Annual Review of Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics.Refaunation, Dirzo says, involves reintroducing individuals of a species into areas where they once lived but no longer do. He believes that both the term and the practice should be more common: Just as we are very accustomed to the term and practice of reforestation, we should do the same with refaunation, he says. Credit: US Fish and Wildlife Service The California Condor Recovery Program produced its first results in a short time. In 1988, just one year after the collection of the last wild condors, researchers at the San Diego Zoo announced the first captive birth of a California condor chick. The technique of double or triple clutching followed, to greater success. Condors are monogamous and usually have a single brood every two years, explains Fernando Gual, who until October 2024 was director general of zoos and wildlife conservation in Mexico City. But if for some reason they lose an egg at the beginning of the breeding seasoneither because it breaks or falls out of the nest, which is usually on a cliffthe pair produces a second egg. If this one is also lost or damaged, they may lay a third. The researchers learned that if they removed the first egg and incubated it under carefully controlled conditions, the condor pair would lay a second egg, which was also removed for care, leaving a third egg for the pair to incubate and rear naturally. This innovation was followed by the development of artificial incubation techniques to increase egg survival, as well as puppet rearing, using replicas of adult condors to feed and care for the chicks born in captivity. That way, the birds would not imprint on humans, reducing the difficulties the birds might face when integrating into the wild population.Xewe (female) and Chocuyens (male) were the first condors to triumphantly return to the wild. The year was 1992, and the pair returned to freedom accompanied by a pair of Andean condors, natural inhabitants of the Andes Mountains in South America. Andean condors live from Venezuela to Tierra del Fuego and have a wingspan about 12 inches larger than that of California condors. Their mission here was to help to consolidate a social group and aid the birds in adapting to the habitat. The event took place at the Sespe Condor Sanctuary in the Los Padres National Forest in California. In a tiny, tentative way, the California condor had returned.By the end of the 1990s, there were other breeding centers, such as the Los Angeles Zoo, the Oregon Zoo, the World Center for Birds of Prey in Boise, Idaho, the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Then, in 1999, the first collaboration agreements were established between the United States and Mexico for the reintroduction of the California condor in the Sierra de San Pedro Mrtir National Park. The number of existing California condors increased from just over two dozen in 1983 to more than 100 in 1995, some of which had been returned to the wild in the United States. By 2000, there were 172 condors and by 2011, 396.By 2023, the global population of California condors reached 561 individuals, 344 of them living in the wild.Genetics: Key ally in the reintroduction of the condorIn a laboratory at the San Diego Zoo in Escondido, California, a freezer full of carefully organized containers with colored labels is testament to the painstaking scientific work that supports the California Condor Recovery Program. Cynthia Steiner, a Venezuela-born biologist, explains that the DNA of every individual California condor is preserved there. This includes samples of birds who have died and those that are living, some 1,200 condors in total. This California condor was hatched in 2004 as part of a breeding program and released in Arizona in 2006. In the 1980s, just 27 of the birds remained in existence. Credit: Mark Newman via Getty Images If science wasnt behind the reintroduction and recovery program it would have been very complicated, not only to understand what the most important hazards are that are affecting condor reproduction and survival, but also to do the management at the breeding centers and in the wild, says Steiner, who is associate director of the Genetic Conservation Biology Laboratory at the Beckman Center for Conservation Research. As she and colleagues outlined in an article in the Annual Review of Animal Biosciences, genomic information from animals at risk of extinction can shed light on many aspects of wildlife biology relevant to conservation. The DNA can reveal the demographic history of populations, identify genetic variants that affect the ability of populations to adapt to changing environments, demonstrate the effects of inbreeding and hybridization, and uncover the genetic basis of susceptibility to disease.Genetic analysis of the California condor, for example, has led to the identification of inherited diseases such as chondrodystrophya disorder that causes abnormal skeletal development and often leads to the death of embryos before eggs can hatch. This finding served to identify carriers of the disease gene and thus avoid pairings that could produce affected offspring.Genetic research has also made it possible to accurately sex these birdsmales are indistinguishable from females to the naked eyeand to determine how individuals are related, in order to select breeding pairs that minimize the risk of inbreeding and ensure that the new condor population has as much genetic variability as possible.Genetics has also allowed the program to determine the paternity of birds and has led to the discovery that the California condor is able to reproduce asexually using parthenogenesis, in which an embryo develops without fertilization by sperm. It was an incredible surprise, says Steiner, recalling how the team initially thought it was a laboratory error. They later confirmed that two chicks had, indeed, developed and hatched without any paternal genetic contribution, even though the females were housed with fertile males. It was the first record of this phenomenon in a bird species. The complete decoding of the California condor genome, published in 2021, also revealed valuable information about the birds evolutionary history and prehistoric abundance. Millions of years ago, it was a species with an effective population of some 10,000 to 100,000 individuals. Its decline began about 40,000 years ago during the last ice age, and was later exacerbated by human activities. Despite this, Steiner says, the species retains a genetic variability similar to birds that are not endangered.A problem with leadDespite these great efforts and a renewed understanding of the species, threats to the condor remain. In the 1980s, when efforts to monitor the last condors in the wild intensified, a revealing event took place: After 15 of them died, four were necropsied and the cause of death of three of them was shown to be lead poisoning.Although these Cathartiformesfrom the Greek kathartes, meaning those that cleanare not usually prey for hunters, their scavenging nature makes them indirect victims of hunter bullets, which kill them not by their impact, but by their composition. Feeding on the flesh of dead animals, condors ingest fragments of lead ammunition that remain embedded in the carcasses.Once inside the body, leadwhich builds up over timeacts as a neurotoxin that affects the nervous, digestive and reproductive systems. Among the most devastating effects is paralysis of the crop, the organ where condors store food before digesting it; this prevents them from feeding and causes starvation. Lead also interferes with the production of red blood cells, causing anemia and progressively weakening the bird, and damages the nervous system, causing convulsions, blindness and death.Efforts in the United States to mitigate the threat of lead to the condors have been extensive. Since the 1970s, several strategies have been implemented, such as provision of lead-free food for condors, campaigns to educate hunters about the impact of lead bullet use on wildlife, and programs showing conservation area visitors how important birds are to the ecosystem. Government regulations have also played a role, like the Ridley-Tree Condor Preservation Act of 2007, which mandates the use of lead-free ammunition for big-game hunting within the condors range in California. However, these efforts have not been sufficient.According to the 2023 State of the California Condor Population report, between 1992 and 2023, 137 condors died from lead poisoning48 percent of the deaths with a known cause recorded in that period. The only population partially spared is in Baja California, where hunting is much less common. Only 7.7 percent of the deaths there are attributable to lead, according to Porras Peas records. Will the condors become self-sufficient again? The 1996 California Condor Recovery Plan notes that a self-sustaining condor population must be large enough to withstand variations in factors such as climate, food availability and predators, and permit gene flow among the various clans or groups. The document establishes the objective of changing the status of the California condor from endangered to threatened under the US Endangered Species Act. To achieve this, there must be two reintroduced populations and one captive population, each with at least 150 individuals, including a minimum of 15 breeding pairs to ensure a positive growth ratemeaning that more condors are born than die. Closeups of two California Condors. Credit: Mark Newman/Getty Closeups of two California Condors. Credit: Mark Newman/Getty Today, released California condor populations are distributed in several regions: Arizona and Utah are home to 90 birds in the wild, while California has 206. In Baja California, 48 condors fly in the wild. According to the calculations of Nacho Vilchis, associate director of recovery ecology at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, it will take 10 to 15 years to have a clearer picture of how long it will take for the reintroduction program to be a complete successto make condor populations self-sustaining.So far, the reality is that all populations depend on human intervention to survive. It is a task carried out by biologists, technicians and conservationists, who face steep cliffs, rough terrain and other obstacles to closely monitor the progress of the released birds and, above all, the development of chicks born in the wild.Juan Vargas Velasco tells epic stories of how he has rappelled down steep cliffs in San Pedro Mrtir National Park, facing attacks from the nests parent defenders in order to examine the chicks. There is a perception that when you release a condor it is already a success, but for there to be real success, you have to monitor them constantly, he says. We follow them with GPS, with VHF telemetry, to make sure that the animals are adapting, that they find water and food. To release animals without monitoring is to leave them to their fate. The costs of managing the species in the field are not small. For example, the GPS transmitters needed to track the condors in their natural habitat cost $4,000, and subscription to the satellite system costs $80 per month per bird, Vilchis says. Other costs associated with the project, he adds, involve the construction of pre-release aviaries, laboratory analyses to monitor the birds health, and the provision of supplementary food in the initial stages of reintroduction. A key to ensuring the survival of the California condor is to secure funding for the species recovery program, notes the US Fish and Wildlife Services five-year report. Each of the California Condor Recovery Programs breeding and release sites in the United States operates as a nongovernmental organization that raises funds to finance the program. On the other side of the border, the program receives logistical support and equipment from US organizations, as well as funding from the philanthropic program Im Back BC Condor, which helps to support the birds in the wild through private donations. From Chapultepec to the San Pedro Mrtir Mountain RangeA California condor hatchling peeks timidly through the protective mesh of the aviary at the Chapultepec Zoo, as one of its parents spreads its vast wings and flies over the enclosure. This space in the heart of Mexico City, one of the largest and most populated metropolises in the world, is part of the condor reintroduction effort in Mexico, a program that has been key to the recovery of the population in the Sierra de San Pedro Mrtir in Baja California. In 2002, the first condors released in Mexico came from the Los Angeles Zoo. In 2007, the Chapultepec Zoo received its first two male condors, with the goal of implementing an outreach and environmental education program while the team learned to handle the birds. After an assessment in 2014, it was confirmed that the zoo met the requirements for reproduction, permitting the arrival of two females. Breeding pairs were successfully formed and, in 2016, the first hatchlings were born.Today, Chapultepec Zoo not only houses a breeding center but also has built its own frozen zoo, formally known as the Genomic Resource Bank, which stores sperm, ovarian tissue and DNA samples from nearly 100 wild animal species, many of them endangered. More than a zoo, its a library, says Blanca Valladares, head of the Conservation Genomics Laboratory within the Mexico City Conservation Centers.Collaboration between Mexican institutions, such as the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas and the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity, has been key in the development of the project in Baja California. What began in the United States has expanded across borders, creating a binational effort in which Mexico has taken an increasingly prominent role. This cooperative approach reflects the very nature of the species, which does not recognize borders in its historical habitat. The hatchling in the aviary is preparing for its trip to Baja California. Over the next few months, it will be transported through air and over land, under the care of dozens of people, to the pre-release aviary in San Pedro Mrtir, where it will spend a period of adaptation before being released. Baja California has been recognized by specialists as one of the best places for the recovery of the species, thanks to its pristine forest, a human population a tenth the size of Californias (4 million versus 40 million), and a low level of lead and diseases. Porras Pea says that the condor population in the region seems to have reached a point of stability: It remained stable for seven years without the need to release new condors bred in captivity.Despite titanic efforts, strict protocols and painstaking care at every stage of reintroduction, things dont always go smoothly. In 2022, a puma attacked a pre-release aviary in the Sierra de San Pedro Mrtir, where four condors, two from San Diego and two from Mexico City, were being prepared for release. The puma found a weak spot in the mesh and, with its claws, managed to reach the two condors from the United States. Porras Pea sadly describes the desperate efforts the team made to save the life of one of the injured birds, but in the end, it died. It was a devastating blow for the team, who saw years of work lost in an instant. The incident is an ironic lesson from nature: While for decades condors were decimated as a consequence of human activity, today a natural predator snatches in seconds what has taken tireless efforts to recovera brutal reminder that even if we rebuild a species by dint of science and sacrifice, nature will always have the last word.Article translated by Debbie Ponchner. This story originally appeared in Knowable Magazine.Ivan Crrillo, Knowable Magazine Knowable Magazine explores the real-world significance of scholarly work through a journalistic lens. 13 Comments
