  • Reacher Is Good Again, As Season 3 Arrives With Perfect 100% Scores
    www.forbes.com
Reacher season 3AmazonOne of Amazon Prime Videos most popular shows, one I believe may be on its way to being its most popular, is back for season 3. That would be Reacher, starring Alan Ritchson as the hulking crime-solver, and this new season? Critics all agree that its quite good. In fact, with 18 reviews in so far, it has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. But wait, dont critics always like Reacher? How can it be good again? Well, because critics were straight up wrong about season 2, I dont care what anyone says. A 98% score for season 2, which had a significant quality drop from season 1 with a focus on an awkward team dynamic, was not good, and the lower audience scores were more right than critics that time. Are critics wrong now? I dont think so, as Ive started watching this season, which has its first three episodes out today, and its already a lot better than season 2 as Reacher is back on his own and the storyline this time seems a lot more interesting. Even the choreography is better. Heres the official synopsis of season 3, which is adapting a new book:Based on Lee Child's novel Persuader, Reacher hurtles into the dark heart of a vast criminal enterprise when trying to rescue an undercover DEA informant whose time is running out. There, he finds a world of secrecy and violence and confronts some unfinished business from his own past.ReacherRotten TomatoesOne of the main hooks of this season is the introduction of an opponent that gives the very large Reacher a run for his money, a character played by bodybuilding giant Olivier Richters, who is 72. Yes, 72. Ritchson is always filmed as looking a bit bigger than his 63 height, but this man is a full foot taller than him and probably has 100+ pounds on him, at least.I firmly believe that Reacher may be the most valuable show that Amazon Prime Video has right now. Yes, other shows have reached higher viewership peaks, but I am not exaggerating when I say that Reacher did not leave Amazons top 10 show list since season 2 aired in December of 2023. That kind of performance is simply incredible, and its clear this show could run for ten seasons if it wanted to, given the source material. And it probably will. So, Reacher launches today, and new episodes will air every Thursday. Tune in to see the improvements for yourself.Follow me , and .Pick up my sci-fi novels the and

  • PlayStation 6 likely to launch in 2028, says former Sony exec
    www.techspot.com
Forward-looking: Now that the PlayStation 5 Pro is here, attention is turning toward Sony's next generation of its console, the PlayStation 6. There's been plenty of speculation about when it will arrive, and according to Shuhei Yoshida, the former Sony exec who was head of SIE Worldwide Studios, we could be waiting until 2028. Yoshida worked at Sony for 38 years, 31 of which were spent at PlayStation. After leaving the company on January 15, 2025, he gave a lengthy interview to GamesBeat.Among the topics covered was console cycles. The publication notes that during his tenure at PlayStation, the gap between console launches was around five or six years, but it's getting longer. The PlayStation 4 was released in November 2013. And while the PlayStation 4 Pro launched in 2016, the PlayStation 5 didn't get here until November 2020, seven years after its predecessor. For comparison, there were only five years between the original PlayStation (1995) and PS2 (2000). The PS3 launched six years later, in 2006, and the PS4 landed seven years later.Yoshida notes that if Sony sticks with a seven-year gap, the PlayStation 6 will arrive in 2027. However, he feels that date is a bit too early. "The PS5 generation was slowed down because of manufacturing issues," Yoshida said, adding that a 2028 date "feels right to me." He highlighted that based on a leak from Microsoft, the next Xbox console could also launch in 2028.The former exec also said that the PS5 generation was "slowed" due to manufacturing issues stemming from the pandemic and global chip shortage. When asked about long cycles, the post-pandemic industry slowdown, and all the layoffs, he called it an "overreaction to the COVID situation." // Related Stories"Companies invested too much, including ourselves. Then we had to face reality and make adjustments. If you take out the COVID years you'd have smoother growth over the years."The PlayStation 5 had its best-ever holiday period in 2024, shipping 9.5 million units only slightly behind the PlayStation 4's best quarter in FY2017. The console has now sold over 75 million units, while Xbox Series S/X sales are around 28.3 million and showing little growth.Last month, a leaker claimed that the chip design for the PlayStation 6 is essentially complete and nearly ready to enter the manufacturing phase. In keeping with Sony's development cycle, the design completion would likely put the console's launch date in 2027.The same leaker previously said that Sony may be working on two SoCs for the PlayStation 6, speculating that one could be for the console and the other for either a new PlayStation handheld or a less-powerful version of the PS6.Masthead: Robin Edqvist

  • Microsoft Majorana 1 chip promises real quantum computing within years, not decades
    www.techspot.com
Forward-looking: Microsoft has unveiled a new quantum chip called "Majorana 1" that claims will make scaled, real-world quantum computing a reality in just years rather than decades. It's palm-sized and has a delightfully retro look yet Microsoft claims it will eventually pack more theoretical computing power than all the world's current classical computers combined. The Majorana 1 comes after nearly two decades of research. The big claims come thanks to Microsoft's unique approach to the quantum problem. Scientists at the company have engineered a first-of-its-kind "topoconductor" material that they say exploits an exotic "topological" state of matter, bridging the gap between quantum physics and practical engineering.Microsoft adds that this topological state enables smaller, faster, and more stable quantum bits (qubits). In fact, the company is so confident in the technology that it claims topoconductors and the new type of chip they enable provide a clear roadmap to scaling up to over one million qubits on a single chip a key threshold for quantum supremacy over classical computers for real-world applications.Microsoft also suggests that as semiconductor transistors revolutionized classical computing and microelectronics, these new topological qubit materials could kickstart an entire quantum industry.Microsoft envisions its new invention enabling major advancements such as breaking down microplastics, designing self-healing construction materials, boosting soil fertility, and turbocharging AI to model and optimize every aspect of manufacturing, medicine, and more."Any company that makes anything could just design it perfectly the first time out," boasts Matthias Troyer, a Microsoft technical fellow. "The quantum computer teaches the AI the language of nature so the AI can just tell you the recipe for what you want to make." // Related StoriesIt all sounds too good to be true, so the BBC decided to conduct a reality check and get some expert perspectives. Some have cautioned that key challenges remain before the new approach can be considered a breakthrough success."Until the next steps have been achieved, it is too soon to be anything more than cautiously optimistic," stated quantum expert Professor Paul Stevenson of the University of Surrey. The opinions weren't all cynical, though. Professor Chris Heunen, a quantum programming expert at the University of Edinburgh, says that Microsoft's roadmap is credible, and the next few years will show if this exciting vision pans out.Microsoft isn't alone in its pursuit of true quantum supremacy. Rivals like Google have produced a steady stream of announcements over the past few years notably unveiling its "Willow" chip late last year. However, Microsoft is seemingly taking longer with its "topological approach," which the company has described in its own words as a "high-risk, high-reward" strategy.

  • How long is Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii
    www.digitaltrends.com
The Like a Dragongames tend to be very lengthy experiences. Ever since turning into JRPGs with 7, they have gotten even longer withInfinite Wealth clocking in anywhere between 40 and 100 hours depending on how addicted to Dondoko Island you get. Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is a spinoff starring Goro Majima taking to the high seas as a pirate, but also takes the game back to its action combat roots. There is still a highly dramatic story, quirky side stories, and plenty of mini games and side activities to be found. But is this game smaller in scope than the mainline games? Heres how long you can expect to spend pirating around Hawaii in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.SegaLike a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is considerably shorter than the last several Like a Dragongames. If you were to play the game somewhat normally, doing most of the side stories, mini-games, and other side activities as we did, then you can expect the adventure to wrap up in around 25 hours or so. On the other hand, if you wanted to just focus on mainlining the story then you could theoretically beat the game in around 15 hours. Thats by no means short, but still a big difference compared to past games.Recommended VideosFor completionists out there, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii isnt as packed with lengthy side activities this time around. If you wanted to do absolutely everything the game has to offer, the game could go up to around 35-40 hours. Depending on what you were expecting from this game, that could cause a sigh of relief or a bit of frustration. If you find yourself in the latter situation, also remember this game came out barely a year after the last one.Editors Recommendations

  • Jack the Ripper and the case of the missing DNA evidence
    www.newscientist.com
Josie FordFeedback is New Scientists popular sideways look at the latest science and technology news. You can submit items you believe may amuse readers to Feedback by emailing feedback@newscientist.com Solved! Or notFeedback is as fond of true crime as the next morbidly curious ghoul, so we have occasionally dipped our toes into the never-ending well of speculation about the Whitechapel murders of 1888-91 and the near-mythical Jack the Ripper. Although frankly, we didnt get much further than Alan Moore and Eddie Campbells From Hell, which (spoiler!) ties the killings to the British establishment and the Freemasons, who supposedly arranged the murders to create an evil psychic force that would perpetuate the patriarchy. But the field of Ripperology extends far beyond one eccentric graphic novel. So our attention was drawn to recent news stories reporting calls for a fresh inquest backed by Karen Miller, a distant descendant of Catherine Eddowes, one of the cases five murdered women.AdvertisementIt all hinges on a shawl that supposedly belonged to Eddowes, which was collected by a police officer at the time and kept in his family for over a century. The shawl came up at auction in 2007 and was bought by Ripperologist Russell Edwards. He arranged for the shawl to undergo DNA testing, the results of which were published in 2019. Geneticists Jari Louhelainen and David Miller obtained mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from two people. One had genetic markers in common with Karen Miller, suggesting it came from Eddowes. The other matched a distant relative of Aaron Kosminski, a barber who was a suspect at the time of the killings. For Edwards, this is proof that Kosminski was the murderer a scenario he has promoted in his book Naming Jack the Ripper. Other Ripperologists are sceptical: social scientist Katie Charlwood points out there is no reliable chain of custody for the shawl, and no evidence the five murders were all committed by the same person.Feedback is in no doubt this story will rumble on forever, but we do want to add something something not one of the recent news stories picked up on. We looked at the 2019 study and discovered that the editors had added an expression of concern in August 2024.It mentions concerns raised by third parties after publication, as well as letters to the editor. And then comes the bombshell: During the investigation, the publisher and Editor-in-Chief made every effort to obtain from the authors the original raw data from the mtDNA analysis. However, the authors stated that the data were no longer available, due to instrument data failure and other complications.Yes, you read that right the crucial mtDNA evidence can never be verified, because the authors have lost it. Maybe Moore was right about the evil psychic force after all.The equation for loveHeres a romantic tale. News editor Alexandra Thompson draws our attention to a preprint entitled, A Formula for Love: Partner merit and appreciation beget actor significance. The authors argue that romantic love is a means to the end of feeling significant and worthy. Feedback isnt sure about that, but lets go with it. This leads them to a multiplicative tri-factor model that determines the likelihood of the actor falling in love with the partner.Specifically: Love for a partner depends on the actors perceptions that (1) the partner possesses meritorious characteristics, and (2) that they appreciate the actor and view them as significant. We assume that these two factors multiplicatively combine with the magnitude of actors quest for significance to determine the likelihood of the actor becoming enamored with partner. In other words, the likelihood of you falling for someone is a combination of how good you think they are, how much you think they appreciate you and how much you care about finding meaning in your life.Feedback tried to extrapolate this into dating advice. The frequent suggestion that one should play hard to get seems counterproductive, if the amount of appreciation you show your partner is a predictor of whether they fall for you. Instead, it seems like a good idea to seek out a partner who is engaged in a desperate quest for significance in life, because they are more prone to falling in love. However, this might have its own downsides, not least the distinct possibility that such a partner might join a cult.Good luck out there, folks.Biting the hand that bitVia news editor Jacob Aron and the Financial Times, Feedback learns that AI company Anthropic doesnt want potential employees to use AI when writing job applications. Their job ads say: While we encourage people to use AI systems during their role we also want to evaluate your non-AI-assisted communication skills. But why, Anthropic? Could it be that the AI letters are full of guff that is unbearably tedious to sift through?By curious coincidence, Feedback learned of this just days after news broke that Chinese AI firm DeepSeek has outperformed US tech giants. OpenAI promptly complained, saying it was reviewing indications that DeepSeek may have inappropriately distilled our models that is, engaged in copyright theft. To sum up, these AI companies dont like being bombarded with AI-written slop and they dont like it if their work is used to train an AI without permission. As a writer whose work has almost certainly been scraped by AI companies, and who has not seen a penny in return, Feedback can only say: Bwahahaha, sucks to be you.Got a story for Feedback? You can send stories to Feedback by email at feedback@newscientist.com. • The Download: Microsofts quantum chip, and explaining rising energy demand
    www.technologyreview.com
This is today's edition ofThe Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what's going on in the world of technology. A new Microsoft chip could lead to more stable quantum computers Microsoft has announced that its made significant progress in its 20-year quest to make topological quantum bits, or qubitsa special approach to building quantum computers that could make them more stable and easier to scale up. The company says its developed a chip containing eight of these qubits, and has also published a Nature paper that describes a fundamental validation of the system. Its a different approach to competitors like Google and IBM. But, if it works, it could be a significant milestone on the path to unlocking quantum computers dramatic new abilities to discover new materials, among many other possible applications. Many of the researchers MIT Technology Review spoke with would still like to see how this work plays out in scientific publications, but they were cautiously optimistic. Read the full story. • I tried 8 brands of whipped cream from the grocery store and ranked them from worst to best
    www.businessinsider.com
    8. Foodtown sweetened light whipped creamI wasn't super impressed by the Foodtown packaging. Lucien Formichella Everything about this feels generic, but I still want to try it.The packaging has a classic but uninspired feel like someone recreated it from their hazy childhood memory of a whipped-cream can.I didn't like this at all.I wasn't a fan of the Foodtown whipped cream. Lucien Formichella I didn't like the flavor of the whipped cream's artificial sweetener. There was also a bit of a funky aftertaste that didn't make things much better.Unfortunately, trying it on a strawberry didn't mask anything, either. 7. Whole Foods whipped toppingWhole Foods calls its whipped cream a "whipped topping," but it's made with real cream. Lucien Formichella I don't love the look of this can at all. It's bland, and the 365 logo seems out of place.I understand that whipped cream is white, but it's not exactly an exciting color to look at.It was pretty good but much lighter than I prefer.I didn't like the texture of Whole Foods' whipped cream. Lucien Formichella I thought the whipped cream melted in my mouth a little too quickly. The use of cane sugar was a nice touch. I certainly tasted the difference from the Foodtown brand, but it wasn't immense.I put a bunch of this on a strawberry and the consistency left a little to be desired. I think good whipped cream enhances the flavor of fruit, but this struggled not to get lost.6. Dairy Star original dairy whipped toppingDairy Star also refers to its whipped cream as a "whipped topping." Lucien Formichella I don't expect to like this one too much. The can looks a little too sterile for my taste. However, all the other red, cow-themed cans were good, so I'm keeping an open mind. This is delicious. There was a deeper flavor to the Dairy Star whipped cream. Lucien Formichella All I could think about was how this one would be especially good with coffee. It tasted like there was a little hint of cinnamon, which I knew was just in my mind.It wasn't my favorite can overall because I lost a little of the unique flavor when I used it as a topping the berry was slightly overpowering.5. Coconut whipped toppingI threw a nondairy option into the taste test to see how it stacked up. Lucien Formichella The can is unassuming, but I've actually had this before and remember loving it.To further the hype, the Trader Joe's cashier couldn't stop raving about this product when I bought it.I'm not sure I'd want to eat this on its own, but it was delicious. The coconut whipped topping had a great taste and texture. Lucien Formichella I tasted a very fresh coconut flavor, and I love how fluffy it is. It's a great alternative and holds its own against dairy whipped cream.Coconut and strawberry isn't my go-to flavor combination, but they paired nicely without canceling each other out.I think the lightness of the coconut cream gives it great versatility and allows it to work with many flavors.4. Original Reddi-WipReddi-Wip is probably the most recognizable whipped cream. Lucien Formichella The can here is lovely sleek and beautiful. It stands out among all the others on the shelf.I looked it up, and it actually was the first aerosol whipped cream. It's so good.Reddi-Wip is a classic for a reason. Lucien Formichella The cream is light, fluffy, and perfectly sweet. I could eat this out of a bowl with a spoon.I wasn't sure I even wanted to try it with the strawberry. It just melts away so quickly and leaves you with a milky-sweet taste. However, the sweetness of the fruit went well with the cream. If the cream was a little thicker, I would've been even happier.3. Krasdale original dairy whipped toppingI was skeptical of the Krasdale whipped cream at first. Lucien Formichella I don't have a great feel for this one.The can looks like a nicer version of the other generic products I tried. However, the cream looked great coming out of it.This was the closest thing to the whipped cream I remember eating as a kid.I was a big fan of the Krasdale topping. Lucien Formichella The cream was light and airy, with a sweet but not overpowering taste. It got a boost in my ranking for the nostalgia factor. The whipped cream also went perfectly with the strawberries. There was enough sweetness to prevent the flavor from getting lost, but I didn't feel like it was overpowering the fruit.2. Farmland real whipped light creamI like a whipped cream with a fun can design. Lucien Formichella The can looks great. I like the cow logo and the spots. It reminded me a lot of the Cabot can. This was very milky and had a richer flavor than most.I didn't have many complaints about the Farmland whipped cream. Lucien Formichella It actually did remind me a little of Cabot, though less textured and vanilla-y. It kind of tasted like Cool Whip without the tang. This whipped cream brought a bolder flavor than most to the strawberry, but it worked. The topping felt fresh instead of just like an accent, like some of the others.1. Cabot premium natural sweetened light whipped creamCabot definitely won for best can design. Lucien Formichella Now, this is a can of whipped cream. I love the pink it really stands out and you can't get any more classic than cow spots.I can't wait to try it.This was the closest I'll ever come to drinking milk straight from a cow on a farm.Cabot was the clear winner. Lucien Formichella I know the can says light, but this had a thickness to it that I appreciated. It was also far milkier than the others, and though it could've been a little sweeter, I was eager to eat more. The cream and strawberries genuinely went together. The richness of the fruit didn't outmatch the creaminess of the topping.I liked Reddi-Wip more on first taste, but I kept going back for more of Cabot's whipped cream. There were a few standout whipped creams and one I wouldn't buy again. Lucien Formichella Foodtown is the only brand I definitelywouldn't buy again, mostly because I didn't love the flavor. I probably wouldn't get the Whole Foods brand again, either, unless I was in a pinch.I preferred the thicker whipped creams like Reddi-Wip, Krasdale, and Farmland. That said, Cabot was easily my favorite one of the bunch. It was so simple and rich, making the strawberries an experience to eat.I felt like I was enjoying a full-fledged dessert rather than just some berries and cream. This story was originally published in July 2023 and most recently updated on February 20, 2024.
