• Five of the most important fintech VCs investing heavily in the sector
    techcrunch.com
Global investing in fintech startups is starting to see an uptick. Just this week, KPMG issued its Pulse of Fintech report for the second half of 2024. In the fourth quarter of 2024, investment climbed to $25.9 billion from $18 billion in the third quarter, according to KPMG.Granted, this is not the enthusiasm of years past, especially the wild days of 2021. But judging by our inboxes, there is no shortage of venture capitalists still betting big on the space.Below is a list of just a few VCs who remain bullish on fintech.Infinity VenturesAbout the VC: Infinity Ventures is a three-year-old early-stage venture firm dedicated to investing in fintech startups globally founded by Jeremy Jonker, Jay Ganatra, and Mario Ruiz. They left PayPal Ventures in May 2021 and closed on their first $158 million fund in October 2021. In October 2024, the firm raised a $184 million Fund II, bringing total assets under management to more than $350 million.Average check size: Depends on stage: $1-2 million pre-seed; $2-4 million seed; and $5-10 million Series A.Notable investments: Rainforest, Pagos, Mendel. Most recent big investment: SimpleClosure, a business-closure platform. The firms focus is on B2B fintech and commerce enablement.Better Tomorrow VenturesAbout the VC: Founded in 2019 by NerdWallet co-founder Jake Gibson and Sheel Mohnot, Better Tomorrow Ventures leads rounds in pre-seed and seed-stage fintech companies globally. It has $225 million in assets under management.Average check size: Ranges from $500,000 to $4 million.Notable investments: Unit, Relay, Coast, Mendel, Charlie. Most recent major investment: Basis (BTV led seed, Khosla led A).If pitching Better Tomorrow Ventures, Mohnot previously told us: Find a way to get in front of us that is exciting! We respond to cold emails all the time heres an example of a cold email that worked. The Fintech FundAbout the VC: Founded in 2022 by This Week in Fintech newsletter author Nik Milanovi, The Fintech Fund invests in fintech companies globally at the pre-seed and seed stages.Last September, the firm closed its second $10 million fund.Average check size: Ranges from $200,000 to $400,000.Notable investments: Rainforest, Unit, Cascading AI, Ansa. Most recent major investment: WiseLayer. If founders are looking for hands-on investors, theyll find it in The Fintech Fund, according to Milanovi.Theres a lot of ETFs that will write large checks, he told TechCrunch previously. But our goal is to really bring together this whole community and thats newsletter readers, investors in the fund, our angel syndicate so that when the founder gets a check out of The Fintech Fund, its not just money but also a ton of consulting or referrals to new hires and to new customers.TTV CapitalAbout the VC: Atlanta-based TTV Capital invests in early-stage companies with a focus on traditional fintech, fintech-enabled businesses and the future of fintech. Its assets under management total over $750 million.Average check size: Ranges from $2 million to $8 million.Major investments: Green Dot, Bill.com, Greenlight. Most recent major investments: Charlie, Payabli.Partner Lizzie (Guynn) Hartley previously told TechCrunch that when it comes to pitching, she prefers to take initial pitch meetings as video calls. Before I talk to a founder on a call, they should be able to clearly articulate the problem they are solving. The ability to distill this down into a digestible and understandable statement is very helpful. I appreciate when founders can walk through the customer workflow end-to-end and prove the customer benefit. This helps us build conviction in a customers willingness to pay for a new tool or software, she said.QED InvestorsAbout the VC: The firm has been around for well over a decade, exclusively investing in companies building financial technology at the pre-seed to Series A stages. It currently has $4 billion in assets under management. In 2023, QED Investors announced that it had raised $925 million across two new funds to back fintech startups globally a $650 million early-stage fund and a $275 million growth-stage fund.Managing partner and co-founder Nigel Morris told TechCrunch at the time of the firms last fund close that QED planned to make about 40 investments out of that early-stage fund.Average check size: $15 million to $20 million.Major investments: Credit Karma (QED was the first institutional money into the company), Creditas, Nubank, SoFi.Most recent major investment: Kin Insurance, One Card, Moniepoint.QED is focused on embedded finance, cross-border payments and wealth management, as well as on AI. Roughly half of QEDs portfolio is in the U.S., followed by LatAm, Europe, Southeast Asia and Africa. Its also looking into fintech opportunities in the Middle East. One of its more recent investments was in Japan, its first in the country.Want more fintech news in your inbox? Sign up for TechCrunch Fintechhere.Want to reach out with a tip? • Report: AI coding assistants arent a panacea

In BriefPosted:8:11 AM PST February 21, 2025Image Credits:Sashkinw / Getty ImagesReport: AI coding assistants arent a panaceaAs they gain in popularity, AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot may appear to be boosting productivity. But in reality, they could be causing overall code quality to decline.Thats the top-line finding from a new report released by software engineering platform GitClear, which analyzed 211 million code lines from 2020 to 2024. According to GitClears analysis, there was a remarkable decline in code reuse last year a potential cause for concern, given that code reuse is a common practice to help build redundant systems.Several recent surveys have shown that AI coding assistants tend to produce mixed results. One from software vendor Harness found the majority of devs spend more time debugging AI-generated code and security vulnerabilities compared to human-written contributions. A Google report, meanwhile, found that AI can quicken code reviews and benefit documentation, but at the cost of delivery stability.Topics

    buildingsofnewengland.com
Mid-Century Modern commercial architecture is often maligned for its car-centric and unadorned designs, but the Lyman Park Offices on Boylston Street in Brookline, Massachusetts, are some of the finest office buildings constructed in Brookline in the 20th century. The two office buildings were built on the site of the Theodore Lyman estate and were built at a time Brookline saw rapid commercialization along the Boylston Street corridor. Designed by the firm of Salsberg & LeBlanc, the Lyman Park Offices are landmark examples of the International style in the commercial form in Brookline. Built of steel and glass, the buildings exhibit spandrels above each floor level, enhancing the strong horizontal emphasis of the design.

  • In Flying High, Tyler D. Ballons Portraits Parallel Sports, History, Identity, and Patriotism

Ballons Portraits Parallel Sports, History, Identity, and PatriotismFebruary 21, 2025ArtHistoryKate MothesIn douard Manets painting The Execution of Emperor Maximilian actually a series of works completed between 1867 and 1869 a firing squad dramatically executes the Hapsburg royal and two generals. Maximilian became Emperor of Mexico at the urging of Napoleon III, following the second French intervention in the country between 1861 and 1867.For his forthcoming solo exhibition, Flying High at Jeffrey Deitch, New Jersey-based artist Tyler D. Ballon recreates the 19th-century painters work in a 16-foot-wide diptych titled Right to Bear Arms/Second Amendment that portrays two young Black men protecting three young Black women, who look directly at the viewer with dignity, in defiance of objectification. Right to Bear Arms/Second Amendment (2024-25), oil on canvas, diptych, overall 70 x 193.5 inchesSeeing a gun pointed at a person of color is something thats familiar to American history, Ballon says in a statement. But having an African American man holding a rifle is distinctively different. The work challenges perceptions of Black men bearing arms, reclaiming their image as patriots and protectors, and pays homage to the Civil War troops.Patriotism and narrative weave throughout Ballons architectonic works, drawing on the legacy of history painting, African Americans in the Civil War, and identity through the lens of contemporary sports. The artist says:While creating these paintings, I realized there is an interesting dichotomy between sports being a tool for success and having Black bodies being used to advance Americas ambition. My paintings challenge stereotypes that confine people of color to achieving success solely through physical prowess or musical talent. These works celebrate the resilience of young African Americans who carve out better lives using the resources available to them.Ballon excavates Black American history, paying homage to those who fought for citizenship and freedom. Through football, a quintessentially American sport, he evokes military ideologies that also offer young men an avenue to channel their aggression, build camaraderie, and find fulfillment, he says. Games evoke battles; coaches are likened to generals or lieutenants; and key players are assigned to be offensive or defensive captains, leading their teammates and relaying calls from the sidelines. Sound of Victory (2025), oil paint on canvas, 82 x 78 inchesChoosing his hometown of Jersey Citys Abraham Lincoln High School to represent a metaphorical and symbolic regiment, Ballon nods to Black Civil War veterans who fought for African Americans rights. Football is also channeled as a means for young people to advance to higher education and further their future prospects. The children in these paintings are a testament to progress and a source of hope for the future, the artist says. In Before the Battle, players suit up and a coach stands off to the left, looking directly back at us, as do many of the determined players. In Fellow Countrymen, we see three distinguished players who also make eye contact, geared up and ready to take on whatever the opposing team throws their way. Our perspective is always just a little bit lower than eye level with the figures, encouraging us to view them in subtle reverence, as we would with many of art historys grand portraits and battle scenes.Ballon grasps the troubled legacy of some early 19th-century history painting, which prior to the widespread use of photography was one way that the European public could comprehend their nations overseas colonial empires, all of which deeply and violently impacted Black and Indigenous peoples.History painting was seen as a form of documentation, sometimes criticized for its lack of accuracy with regard to depictions of battles, but it proved a powerful method for furthering white European imperial attitudes. For Ballon, appropriating the genre yields a powerful tool, turning the tables on both who makes and is portrayed in the monumental scenes.Detail of Right to Bear Arms/Second AmendmentBallon also celebrates marching bands, historically used to convey orders and signals to military troops, which over time assumed the role of morale- and unity-boosters. I choose to portray the marching band of Malcom X Shabazz High School for their renowned excellence in performance, their New Jersey roots, and their namesake, Malcom X, a pivotal leader during the Civil Rights Movement whose ideology helped shape African American culture and history, Ballon says. The title of the exhibition, Flying High, reflects the aspiration to rise above the adversities of inner city life. My work focuses on the lives and experiences of the people in my community, Ballon says. I believe in capturing moments that can inspire and validate their existence, extending their stories beyond geographic and temporal boundaries. I want young people to see themselves as worthy of being immortalized in arta recognition that transcends time.Flying High runs from March 8 to April 19 in New York City. • Understanding intersectionality: Inclusion and employees whole life experience
    www.computerweekly.com
The reason why diversity is so important for tech teams is because difference in opinions and life experience can lead to more innovative ideas, as well as ensure technology is developed with features that better reflect the needs of its user base. For those campaigning for diversity and inclusion in the technology industry, the past decade has focused on helping businesses understand the benefit of encouraging underrepresented groups into tech. But the result has been diversity and inclusion initiatives only focused on hiring a specific group of people, such as women or people of colour, overlooking how an overlap of these characteristics can affect their experience in the technology sector.During a panel at the 2024 Computer Weekly and Harvey Nash Diversity in Tech event, experts discussed why its important to consider a persons whole experience when trying to develop an inclusive and equitable tech culture, acknowledging the intersectional nature of many in the industry, and how that plays a part in forming their perspective and approach to tech.Merriam-Websters dictionary defines intersectionality as the complex, cumulative way in which the effects of multiple forms of discrimination (such as racism, sexism and classism) combine, overlap or intersect, especially in the experiences of marginalised individuals or groups an idea introduced by civil rights scholar Kimberl Crenshaw. As an example related to the IT sector, its difficult to be a woman in tech, its difficult to be a person of colour in tech, and its even more difficult to be a woman of colour in tech.Sonya Barlow, founder and director of diversity, inclusion and belonging at the Like Minded Females (LMF) network, explained: Its really about what different experiences you have. In simple terms, is the fact that you have so many layers to you either going to help you or hinder you? Everyone here is intersectional, because we all have different layers. Diversity is about differences; intersectionality is the different layers that we bring to the table. The business benefit of including these individuals in the tech workplace is no different to the benefits of increased diversity in tech overall diverse teams better reflect technology users, and the more mixed a group is, the more likely they are to come up with different and therefore more innovative ideas. As explained by Megan Goodwin, co-founder of The Vision: If you create an environment which actually embraces and seeks challenge, and seeks change, and difference of opinion, that is only going to be positive for your firm. All the stats that everybodys given [during the Computer Weekly diversity event] are that the more diverse the leadership team, the more revenue it will generate. The challenge comes during the inclusion piece developing a culture where people can thrive no matter their background. She continued: How many companies seek out very different opinions when theyre making massive strategic decisions? How many businesses really incentivise people to have a different view and to put their hand up?The quietest people in the room are the people who are probably the most unrepresented. How do you change that? I think that you need a culture shift of difference is good.Without this cultural shift, the working world is even harder for underrepresented individuals.Barlow used some of her own overlapping characteristics as an example of intersectionality, highlighting that shes of Pakistani heritage, is a British Asian, has ADHD and experiences chronic migraines.I not only face issues being a woman, she said. Turns out, I face issues being a brown woman, then Im a loud brown woman, which no one really likes. You know what I mean? Im ambitious on top of that, and then on top of that, turns out I didnt know I had ADHD. I didnt even know I had chronic migraines.Barlow also highlighted that her life and work experience will be different to others with different characteristics and this is also true of what people need out of technology: different people will need different things depending on their experience. But in the workplace, the more characteristics you have, the more difficult things become to navigate, clarified Gill Cooke, inclusion, equity and diversity consultant, associate, advisor, and trainer. The more different identities that you identify with, the more likely you are to have additional challenges, additional obstacles, probably additional discrimination, abuse, harassment, etc, she said. So, actually, the scales are really weighed against you. And really what we want to talk about is that, how do we recognise that and open the doors to more people?Whole self, or work persona?A term often heard in the diversity and inclusion space relates to the concept of bringing your whole self to work, and how building an inclusive culture should help people to achieve this, especially if they are from an underrepresented group. For someone with neurodivergence, such as autism or ADHD, this can be quite helpful as highlighted by Goodwin, many people with neurodivergence end up masking at work, sometimes leaving them feeling alienated and exhausted. There are all sorts of mental health aspects towards people masking at work, she said. But while being embraced for who you are can add to a sense of belonging in the workplace, there is still a line to be drawn, said Cooke. The workplace is still just that, so there needs to be a certain level of appropriateness when it comes to bringing your whole self to work, she explained.Actually, we dont always want everyones authentic self at work, in the nicest possible way, because some people might come and say, Well, Im a racist, Im homophobic. This is me, take it or leave it. Im being my authentic self.Instead, the goal should be creating an environment where everyone is set up to be as successful as they possibly can be.Recognition was the first piece of advice the panel gave to ensure underrepresented groups are supported and included acknowledging someone has challenges is one step towards helping build a better environment for them. Many elements of difficulty, such as neurodivergence, can be invisible, so its unhelpful to make assumptions about the challenges people are facing.Next, the panel explained that adaptations need to be made, and thats not always a one-size-fits-all situation.Tab Ahmed, founder and CEO of EmployAbility, told the audience she often hears excuses from employers when talking about disability, such as: Oh, theres nobody of disability who works here because we cant see them.Okay, theyre not in a wheelchair, she said. Thats true, but thats 5% of people of disability who might be in a wheelchair. Just because you cant see it, doesnt mean it doesnt exist. Or the other thing I get is, Its okay, we have a ramp. Thats great for somebody in a wheelchair. It doesnt help ADHD so much. But the problem with non-visible differences, especially disabilities, is the challenge of disclosure. Ahmed urged businesses to ensure people have a safe and clear way to ask for help if they need it.One of the really key important things is, is there a safe, robust accommodations process in place that is well signposted that people can go to and be comfortable to engage with, knowing that their privacy is going to be protected and that information is only going to be shared with people that need to understand that information to provide the correct accommodations they might need in the workplace? she said. While there isnt a single solution that will suit everyone, Ahmed pointed out that catering for those with disability and neurodivergence means businesses usually get it right for the other diversity strands as well. Because I think sometimes disability and neurodivergence is one of the most complex strands to actually address.Advice for supporting intersectionalityThe panels key advice for creating a supportive and inclusive work environment:Recognise that some individuals may have difficulties in the workplace because of their background, which may be exacerbated if they have overlapping characteristics.Dont make assumptions about what people need.Create an environment where people feel able to ask for help, and make it clear how they can do so.Not one solution is going to work for everyone, so communicate with individuals to see what will help them: collaboration is key.Allow others access to the same accommodations, as it may unexpectedly end up making others work lives better, too.Educate employees about differences in working patterns and accommodations understanding breeds recognition and acceptance.Focus on inclusion, and the rest will follow more easily.Education was also mentioned as a key tool for ensuring colleagues are supported in the workplace, whereby ensuring employees are informed about differences in working patterns and the reasons behind them helps everyone to be more understanding, flexible and supportive, and in the end may result in helping everyone. In fact, Cooke claimed both a holistic and a specific approach is best, suggesting firms make reasonable adjustments for those who need it, then make those adjustments available to everyone. She also pointed out that many are so focused on getting diverse candidates into the tech workforce that they forget to focus on implementing the inclusive culture needed to keep them, and an overall flexible and supportive culture will be beneficial regardless of whether someone is from an underrepresented group or not. I think inclusion is more important than diversity, said Cooke. Inclusion creates diversity. I think in the past, people have brought people in, but then people who do have extra needs or are maybe a little bit loud, or a little bit this, or a little bit that, and they dont fit in, and therefore they leave. If you want people to stay, start with inclusion, start with the inside, and then other people will want to come to the party, she added. At the end of the day, Barlow claimed, it comes down to common sense. If you just take it a step back, it really is about being empathetic, she said. Would you like it if you were in that situation? Ask people what they want; ask people how they like to work.

  • Microsoft 365 Security Warning As URL Hackers Exploit The @ Gap
    www.forbes.com
Watch out for the @ gap, security experts warn.SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty ImagesAlthough, as a new FBI security advisory demonstrates only too sagely, phishing is not the only hacking fruit, that doesnt mean that the risk of social engineering is to be ignored. Far from it, in fact. A flood of security warnings, including the FrigidStealer campaigns targeting macOS users, sophisticated AI-driven attacks aimed at Gmail users are proof of that. Now, security researchers at Check Point have confirmed a new phishing campaign that exploits something known as the @ gap to drive victims toward Microsoft 365 credentials theft. What Microsoft 365 Users Need To Know About The @ Gap AttacksObfuscation, the art of hiding something, is key to the success of most phishing campaigns. Most often, what the attacker wants to hide is the actual website that they are driving their victims to, and that means some sort of messing around with the URL link address itself. There are many ways of accompanying this, from the use of cleverly located mouseover text link-hovering attacks, through to sophisticated in-browser double-click hacks. What you might not have heard of, however, is the @ gap exploitation technique that has been observed by Check Point security researchers. In what Check Points Harmony and Email Collaboration team called sophisticated URL manipulation techniques, the observed campaign has already sent more than 200,000 phishing emails targeting a wide range of organizations and individuals. Some 75% of these are aimed at those within the U.S., with the remainder hitting EMEA and Canadian users. The report revealed that the attackers are exploiting the @ gap, the userinfo portion of web addresses and specifically the segment between http:// and the @ symbol within a URL. Since most websites disregard this field, the researchers warned, attackers can insert misleading information before the @ symbol to disguise malicious links.Having been routed through what appear to be legitimate redirects, the victim ends up at what has been described as a meticulously crafted Microsoft 365 phishing page, complete with CAPTCHA implementation. The latter is something I have warned of previously as being exploited in such campaigns to add a degree of false security to the proceedings.Mitigating The Latest Microsoft 365 Phishing AttacksCheck Point recommended the following three approaches to mitigate these Microsoft 365 @ gap attacks:Consider updating redirection rules. In the event that a site or application allows for redirection, ensure that your enterprise maintains strict rules around where redirects can lead to.Adopt current best practices. Regularly update and patch systems. Keep all software, including email clients and web browsers, up-to-date with the latest security patches.Implement advanced email security. Utilize comprehensive and advanced email security solutions. One thing is for sure: if you are a Microsoft 365 user, then you need to be aware that such URL obfuscation occurs and be extra careful as to where that link is really taking you.If in doubt, in fact, at all times, dont enter login information at a site unless you have typed in the address yourself or use a known and trusted bookmark.

  • Captain America: Brave New World Should Have Been Falcon And The Winter Soldier
    www.forbes.com
Falcon and the Winter SoldierDisneyIm still thinking about Captain America: Brave New World and why it felt so strange to me. It was meant to be an espionage thriller (spoilers follow) in the vein of The Winter Soldier, and yet there was no real conspiracy (no traitors, just a guy randomly mind-controlling people) and a twist that was given away in the first trailer (Ross turning into Red Hulk in the Rose Garden).Despite some decent action and Anthony Mackie doing pretty well, this didnt feel like the film it was supposed to be. In fact, it felt like a worse version of something wed already seen: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The Disney Plus series was the last time we saw Sam Wilson in live action, and that aired all the way back in 2021. That was also an espionage thriller, it also dealt with Sam struggling with the mantle of being the new Captain America. But despite some issues, it felt like this should have been what Brave New World was instead of what we got. A few things:(L-R): Sarah Wilson (Adepero Oduye), Falcon/Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Winter Soldier/Bucky ... [+] Barnes (Sebastian Stan) in Marvel Studios' THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER exclusively on Disney+. Photo by Chuck Zlotnick. Marvel Studios 2021. All Rights Reserved.Chuck ZlotnickThe chemistry between Wilson and Bucky is sorely missed in Brave New World and reduced to a cameo. It also would have been a good set-up for the imminently released Thunderbolts as well.Wilson struggling to take the mantle and being replaced by the supposedly Steve Rogers-like John Walker who fails to uphold the values of the shield was a much better way of portraying this transition than Brave New World beginning without any of that, especially given that a fraction of people even watched Falcon and the Winter Soldier compared to this new film, so they missed that entire arc. There was at least some level of espionage and conspiracy here with the Power Broker. This part was not well-handled with the reveal of Sharon Carter as the big bad, but with some script modification and most importantly editing this somewhat bloated series to fit into a movie, it could have worked.A big problem was that Brave New World felt like a sequel to The Incredible Hulk back in 2008, returning to plotlines involving Ross and Samuel Sterns, and Sams actual relationships are reduced to training his wise-cracking Falcon replacement. Nothing with Bucky other than that cameo, no significant grappling with taking over the mantle that came off better with the Walker plotline. And no real espionage. Plus very weird asides like making the main conflict about a giant statue in the ocean from a movie that again, was little watched and came out in 2021, Eternals.Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a good show that could have been great edited down. Brave New World was an okay movie that I would argue did not really need to exist, and FatWS would have served Sam better. But whats done is done.Follow me , and .Pick up my sci-fi novels the and

  • Nvidia's RTX 5070 Ti vanishes in seconds as supply woes continue
    www.techspot.com
Facepalm: After Nvidia's RTX 5090 and 5080 faced immediate shortages, consumers hoped that the company's new mid-range graphics cards would at least stay in stock for more than a millisecond. Unfortunately, the RTX 5070 Ti sold out just as quickly, and reports suggest that the RTX 5070 and 5060 may face similar supply issues. As the RTX 5070 Ti officially "launched" on February 20, screenshots of storefronts revealed just how quickly every model sold out.Screenshots of Newegg's front page, taken just minutes after the 5070 Ti went on sale, show every model out of stock including those priced $200 above the GPU's $749 MSRP. Our review of the 5070 Ti concluded that if customers can't find it at MSRP, they might as well have bought a 4070 Ti two years ago, as its successor offers only marginal improvements.Amazon and Micro Center also sold out of their online stock almost immediately. However, as of this writing, the Micro Center in Fairfax, Virginia, still has a few units available for those nearby. The $549 RTX 5070 and the more affordable RTX 5060 might have better availability, but prospective buyers should still be prepared to refresh online listings frequently and possibly wait a few weeks for stock to improve. Supply chain sources recently told Taiwan-based Commercial Times that performance issues delayed the manufacturing schedule for Nvidia's upcoming GPUs, which may remain scarce until at least mid-March.Additionally, the January 23 earthquake damaging thousands of wafers reportedly impacted Nvidia's semiconductor supply for the RTX 50 series. // Related StoriesAlthough the RTX 5070 Ti features a cut-down version of the 5080's GB203 GPU, the RTX 5070 utilizes the full die of the lower-tier GB205 processor. Its specifications resemble those of the RTX 4070, including the same disappointing 12GB VRAM capacity. However, it benefits from faster GDDR7 memory, fourth-generation Tensor cores, fifth-generation RT cores, and a 50W power increase. Details on the RTX 5060 are scarce, and even less is known about the 5060 Ti.Meanwhile, AMD may offer serious competition as early as March with the Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT. Pricing, specs, and release dates remain unclear, but early benchmarks suggest they could rival the RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti.Laptops featuring AMD's RX 9000 series GPUs won't launch anytime soon, but Acer and other manufacturers plan to release gaming notebooks with RTX 50 series GPUs in the coming weeks.
