  • Lenovo Legion Go S review: feels good, plays bad
    www.theverge.com
The Lenovo Legion Go S was supposed to change things. It was poised to show Valve isnt the only one that can build an affordable, portable, potent handheld gaming PC you just need the right design and the right OS. I was intrigued when Valves own Steam Deck designers told me this Windows handheld would double as the first authorized third-party SteamOS handheld this May. When I heard Lenovo had procured an exclusive AMD chip that would help that SteamOS version hit $499, I got excited for a true Steam Deck competitor. But Im afraid that chip aint it. Ive spent weeks living with a Legion Go S powered by AMDs Z2 Go, the same chip slated to appear in that $499 handheld. Ive used it with both Windows and Bazzite, a SteamOS-like Linux distro that eliminates many of Windows most annoying quirks. I tested both directly against a Steam Deck OLED and the original Legion Go, expecting to find it between the two in terms of performance and battery life. But thats not what I found.Watt for watt, its Z2 Go chip simply cant compete with the Steam Deck, and its far weaker than the Z1 Extreme in last years handhelds. Thats inexcusable at the $730 price youll currently pay for the Windows version, and I wont be the first reviewer to say so. But with this less efficient chip and a mere 55 watt-hour battery, I worry the Legion Go S isnt a good choice at all.4Verge ScoreLenovo Legion Go S$730$730The GoodGood ergonomicsGreat variable refresh rate screenPowerful coolingFast 100W chargingThe BadPerformance is too lowWindows is bloated and cant be trusted to sleepSomewhat slippery textureNearly useless touchpad$730 at Best Buy$730 at LenovoHow we rate and review productsI want to say that the Legion Go S makes a great first impression, but Windows 11 still features a terrible out-of-box experience. I spent nearly 45 minutes waiting for mandatory updates to install and dismissing dark-patterned offers for Microsoft products that have no business being on my handheld gaming machine. Still, the Go S is built far better than the original Legion Go, whose flat-faced controllers felt awkward in my hands. The new portable has some of the best-sculpted grips Ive felt on a handheld, though their smooth texture can feel a little slippery. Id have gone with more aggressive stippling to help me hold its 1.61-pound weight.Photo by Antonio G. Di Benedetto / The VergePhoto by Antonio G. Di Benedetto / The VergeBut its buttons all feel precise and secure, if the triggers are longer than Id like, and its concave-topped, drift-resistant Hall effect joysticks feel comfy and wonderfully smooth to spin. The only weak control is the touchpad, which is so tiny I flick repeatedly to move the cursor an inch at a time.Audio is much improved from front-facing speakers, and a larger fan moves more air while staying quieter than before. And its one of the fastest-charging handhelds yet I clocked each of its top-mounted USB 4 ports drawing a full 100 watts of USB-C PD power during actual use. The cooling and charging are so good, Lenovo lets you crank the chip up to 40-watt TDP while its plugged in or 33 watts on battery alone. The backs of the original Legion Go and Legion Go S, showing detachable controls vs. fixed grips. Photo by Sean Hollister / The VergeBut as youll see in my benchmark charts, the Z2 Go simply isnt in the same ballpark as the Steam Deck OLEDs Sephiroth chip. In some games, it cant beat the Steam Deck at all, even if you plug it in and crank it all the way up. With the Steam Deck, which runs at 15-watt TDP, I can average 52 frames per second at an upscaled 720p resolution and low settings on battery power alone. But even if I feed the Legion Go S with 40 watts and plug it into a wall, the open-world game runs slower at 49fps. And thats after a new set of drivers; the shipping ones were much worse.Photo by Antonio G. Di Benedetto / The VergeIn other games, cranking up Lenovos TDP by five, 10, or 15 watts can give it a comfortable lead over the Deck. But that significantly impacts battery. In Lenovos default 25W Performance mode, I saw some games run just as smoothly as on the Deck but with total system power consumption of around 36 watts, draining the handhelds 55 watt-hour battery in about an hour and a half. The Steam Deck, which drains at around 22 to 24 watts at full bore, lasts two hours at the same smoothness.I have possible good news about SteamOS: when I installed Bazzite, which can serve as a decent preview of what SteamOS might look and feel like, I saw frame rates improve by an average of 16 percent in early tests (minus Returnal, which seems to hate Linux for some reason), and Bazzite is such a breath of fresh air after attempting to use Windows. But it still didnt reach Steam Deck performance unless I sacrificed more battery to get it. That works with a handheld like the Asus ROG Ally X with a big 80 watt-hour battery, but not so much here.Legion Go S Windows vs. BazziteGameLegion Go S (Windows)Legion Go S (Bazzite)Steam Deck OLEDBazzite vs. WindowsCyberpunk 2077, 15-watt TDP36425216.67%20-watt TDP4153N/A29.27%25-watt TDP4559N/A31.11%30-watt TDP4660N/A30.43%Plugged in49605222.45%DX: Mankind Divided, 15-watt TDP56627010.71%20-watt TDP6374N/A17.46%25-watt TDP6680N/A21.21%30-watt TDP6784N/A25.37%Plugged in70827017.14%Returnal, 15-watt TDP241726-29.17%20-watt TDP2622N/A-15.38%25-watt TDP2924N/A-17.24%30-watt TDP3025N/A-16.67%Plugged in322526-21.88%Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 15-watt TDP535161-3.77%20-watt TDP5359N/A11.32%25-watt TDP5562N/A12.73%30-watt TDP6463N/A-1.56%Plugged in6565610.00%Average framerates. All games tested at 720p and low or (Cyberpunk 2077) handheld-specific settings.Even if you crank up the Z2 Go, its turbo modes are never anywhere near as effective as the Z1 Extreme in last years portables. In my tests, the original Legion Go with Z1E runs anywhere from 15 percent to 40 percent faster comparing Windows to Windows a lot for a handheld, where modern games struggle to reach smooth frame rates at all. The Legion Go S does have an ace up its sleeve: its crisp, colorful 1920 x 1200 IPS screen looks better at lower resolutions than its predecessors 2560 x 1600 panel, and it runs more smoothly at lower frame rates now that it has VRR to adjust its refresh rate anywhere between 48Hz and 120Hz on the fly. I would not buy a Legion Go over a Legion Go S for this reason alone. Photo by Antonio G. Di Benedetto / The VergeAnd if you primarily play games that dont require performance, the Legion Go S is a bit more efficient at lower wattage: by setting TDP, brightness, and refresh rate low, I was able to achieve a total of just 7.5W battery drain in Windows and 7W in Bazzite while playing magic math poker game Balatro. That should net me seven to eight hours of battery life, and you should be able to hit the four-hour mark without those tricks just by setting the Legion Go S to its 8-watt TDP Quiet mode. When I played the similarly easy to run Slay the Spire on the original Legion Go, pulling out all the stops, I couldnt even reach five hours.Photo by Antonio G. Di Benedetto / The VergeBut again, the Steam Deck does efficiency better. Simply limiting frame rate to 25fps and brightness to 40 percent can yield over eight hours of Balatro on the Deck, and Ive gotten four hours, 42 minutes in Dave the Diver there. With the Legion Go S, my Dave only got 2.5 hours to hunt those sushi ingredients and blow up fake environmentalists!I am comfortable saying no one should buy the Windows version of the Lenovo Legion Go S, which costs $730 at Best Buy. Even if the performance, battery life, and price werent disqualifiers, Windows is a stain on this machine. And like other recent Windows handhelds Ive tested, it does not reliably go to sleep and wake up again: I woke several mornings to find the system hot with fans spinning, even though Id pressed the power button the previous evening. I found it uncomfortably warm pulling it out of my bag the other day. Even if you prefer Windows to SteamOS, you can get notably better performance and far better battery life from the $800 Asus ROG Ally X, which is worth every extra penny, particularly since it doubles as the best Bazzite machine you can buy. But even if you add Bazzite to the Legion Go S, its no Steam Deck, and Im not sure thatll change by May. If youre waiting for a $499 Legion Go S with SteamOS, heres my advice: just buy a $530 Steam Deck OLED instead. • Die in the Dungeon will keep you busy until Slay the Spire 2
    www.theverge.com
Die in the Dungeon is a new roguelike deckbuilder that pulls some ideas from Slay the Spire, one of my favorite games, but adds some dice-based twists that have me hooked. In Dungeon, your goal is to survive through progressively harder maps of enemies by building a deck but instead of collecting cards, youre collecting dice. During every hand, you have a certain amount of energy you can use to play your dice. And since you can see every move your enemies will make on the next turn, the game is mostly about strategizing how to attack the baddies while defending yourself. If youve played Slay, this setup should feel pretty familiar. But Dungeons clever twist is in how you play. At the beginning of each turn, the game will roll dice from your deck into your hand, and youll need to decide how to play them on a board. Each die has a value, so the higher the value, the more damage youll deal or block youll set up to defend yourself. There are multiple types of dice, including attack dice, block dice, healing dice, and dice that can boost the value of other dice on the board. Each one costs a certain amount of energy to play, which puts limits on how many you can use in one turn. And sometimes, enemies will add modifiers to spots on the board.Image: HypeTrain Digital, INSTINCT3That all means youll have to think a lot about how and where you play your dice on the board. Do you go all in with attack dice to take a big chunk of an enemys health, but leave yourself vulnerable to attacks? Do you spend some energy on a boost block to give yourself more defense at the cost of being able to use a health dice? Just about every turn in Dungeon requires some strategic thinking. The intensity of the strategy makes the Slay-esque trappings something of a comfort. I find Dungeon to be very hard; the enemies can really pack a punch if youre caught off guard, and I havent been able to get past the bosses of the games first two worlds unless I have a clear idea of what my build is.But I already understand how to think about building a deck from many hours of Slay. Ive called on a lot of those skills to make things easier over the 10-plus hours Ive put into Dungeon so far and to accomplish my one and only cleared run.RelatedWhile Slay is good at keeping things snappy with battles that are just long enough I could often finish a run in around 45 minutes runs in Dungeon can drag. Individual battles can take minutes on their own because of how much you might just sit and think. Loading screens that take five or more seconds add up over the course of a run. The dungeon maps also have a few too many spaces. My longer runs, where Ive gotten to the third and final world, have taken nearly two hours.Dungeon is launching in early access, though, so Im hoping the rougher edges will get smoothed out over time. Even over the couple weeks Ive been playing the game, there have been some welcome updates, like one that gives you coins if you choose to skip an end-of-battle reward. The games developers have posted a promising roadmap, too. That all makes me optimistic for Dungeons long-term future. And its foundation is really strong. Ive had a blast with Dungeon, despite its faults and me only having beaten the game with one of the three available characters so far. After I lose a run, I often mull over how I could have done things differently, and Im usually eager to hop back in to roll the dice again.Ive been really looking forward to Slay the Spire 2, which is supposed to come out in early access this year. But I might have already scratched the deckbuilding itch with Die in the Dungeon.Die in the Dungeon is now available in early access on Steam. You can try a version of it for free on itch.io.See More:

  • 15 Worst Nintendo Game Boy Games Ever
    www.denofgeek.com
The Game Boy is still a widely beloved handheld for gamers who grew up in the 90s. Sure, it was woefully underpowered, a color version didnt even come out until the handheld had been on the market for almost a decade, and even then it lacked any sort of backlight. But the games were just plain fun, and in terms of battery life and library, it was leagues better than any of its competitors. At least thats how we mostly remember it. But for every classic like Pokmon Red and Blue or The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening, developers shoveled dozens of terrible games onto the Game Boy in the hopes of luring in unsuspecting buyers with a big license or impressive box art. These are the 15 worst Game Boy games ever made.15. X-Men: Mutant WarsX-Men: Mutant Wars is actually not a terrible looking game. The graphics might even be considered kind of good given the limitations of the Game Boy Color. At the very least, you can easily tell who the X-Men are supposed to be when you look at their sprites. The trouble starts when you actually play the game. This is a generic beat em up with stiff, unresponsive controls. Thats if you even bother fighting the bad guys. You can just jump over them in most cases if you want, but that just means youll get to the frustratingly lengthy boss battles even sooner. Even with those drawn out fights, the game only takes about an hour to beat, but that hour would be better spent doing literally anything else.14. Buffy the Vampire SlayerBuffy the Vampire Slayer was a great TV show in the late 90s and early 2000s, and The Collective even managed to make an awesome underrated original Xbox game out of it. Apparently, they did that by taking everything about the Game Boy version of Buffy and doing the exact opposite. Barebones is a generous description of this Game Boy title. You play as Buffy walking through Sunnydale. A single vampire appears. You press A until it falls down, then you press down and A to stake it. Theres no real platforming. There are no collectibles. Theres really nothing else to do. It just kind of goes on like this for eight tedious levels until it just sort of ends.13. Raging FighterRaging Fighters box art should really be a stark warning for anyone even thinking of picking it up to avoid it at all costs. First off, the logo is so poorly designed it looks more like Raging FighteB, whatever the hell that is. But maybe the artist was psychic, because they managed to draw what sort of looks like 90s fit Steven Seagal kicking modern old Steven Seagal in the face.If anything about this game lived up to that premise, it would be an underrated classic, but theres nothing redeeming here. Raging Fighter features seven characters who barely look any different from each other in-game, and play exactly the same. And all of their punches and kicks feel like theyre being thrown underwater. Despite this, every last one of them can completely annihilate you in a few seconds when controlled by the computer, even on the easiest difficulty.12. Star WarsStar Wars on Game Boy gets credit for its ambition. For a game released in 1992, theres quite a bit of variety, including traditional platforming, top-down speeder sections, and even first-person shooter segments. Unfortunately, regardless of the level youre playing, the gameplay still sucks. The Game Boy game is similar to the better regarded NES version, but with the graphics zoomed in and with much less detail since everything is monochrome. What this ultimately means is that there are a lot of blind jumps, or youll just blindly run into things in the landspeeder levels. What little goodwill this title gets from its setting, it quickly throws away by being aggravatingly difficult and not very fun to play.11. Castlevania: The AdventureHey, its Castlevania, on the Game Boy, what could possibly go wrong? Well, pretty much everything it turns out. Castlevania: The Adventure arrived at around the same time as the third NES game in the series, and learned absolutely nothing from what made that trilogy great.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!Subweapons are bafflingly absent, so you just whip stuff. A lot. And very poorly, because the controls are extremely sluggish. Making everything even more aggravating is that the four levels here are painfully long, and if you lose the three lives you start with, youll have to begin each level all over again. Konami went on to make quite a few excellent portable Castlevania games, but theres really no reason to ever go back to where it all began.10. Grand Theft AutoThe original Grand Theft Auto was a funif dated, even back thentop-down action game. Certainly, the sequels improved on the first in every way, but even the original featured the really great sense of freedom that garnered the series quite a bit of attention from players. It was also a pretty good showcase for what the original PlayStation and PCs of the 90s could do. The Game Boy simply wasnt up to handling any of that.Grand Theft Autos biggest offense is that, with the Game Boys limitations, there simply arent that many cars around to hijack at any given time. When you do find one, the cumbersome controls make it a pain to actually steal a vehicle. The developers had one job: to make the one mechanic referenced in the games title at least halfway enjoyable, and they really missed the mark.9. Bart Simpsons Escape from Camp DeadlyFun fact: even though Escape from Camp Deadly has a similar plot to the classic Simpsons episode Kamp Krusty, where Bart leads a rebellion against a shady summer camp, the game was released a year before that episode made it to air. I mention that here because its really the only remotely interesting thing about the game.Like virtually all Simpsons games released in the 90s, Escape from Camp Deadly is pure licensed schlock. This is another stupidly difficult game that requires precise platforming despite the finnicky controls. Combat is just plain unfair, with unlimited numbers of enemies teleporting in from the sides of the screen. If you decide to subject yourself to this game and manage to beat it, seeing the ending is a matter of dumb luck.8. Tasmania StoryYoure probably thinking Tasmania Story, thats more licensed garbage based on Taz the Tasmanian Devil, right? That would make sense, and yet youre absolutely wrong. Tasmania Story is actually based on a little-known Japanese drama about a boy reconnecting with his father in Tasmania after the death of his mother. Its never been released outside of Japan, and it wasnt a particularly popular film there either.Nothing about the origins of this game makes much sense, and it gets even weirder when you realize that developer Pony Canyon really just used the Tasmania Story license as an excuse to port an obscure MSX game called Fruit Panic which itself was just a rip-off of Mappy. Except the controls are much worse, the game is absurdly difficult, and there are only 10 stages. Id like to say that this game was at least a good idea on paper, but its hard to understand how anyone writing this down ever thought that this could be a profitable business venture.7. Toy StoryThe 16-bit version of Toy Story is a divisive game, especially when compared to much better regarded Disney games of the era based on movies like The Lion King and Aladdin. At the very least, most gamers could agree that the prerendered graphics of the console versions were impressive. The first problem the Game Boy port of Toy Story is that those prerendered graphics look like complete garbage when shrunk down to a tiny screen that cant show color. Suddenly, you cant even tell which objects Woody can and cant jump on, not that jumping is much fun to begin with due to the terrible floaty controls. This is clearly a game that was made to meet contractual obligations, and nothing more.6. Street RacerAfter Super Mario Kart hit the scene in 1992, other developers rushed out their kart racing clones as quickly as possible to cash-in on the newfound genre. Street Racer on the SNES is a perfectly adequate, if forgettable, Mario Kart clone. The problem with porting Street Racer to the Game Boy is that there was no possible way the handheld could handle a visually demanding game like this. Notice how as much as Nintendo loves money, even they didnt bother making a portable Mario Kart game until the much more powerful Game Boy Advance released in 2001.Street Racer actually looks promising when you launch it on the handheld. Theres a nicely animated title screen. The characters are a little generic looking, but at least have some nice accompanying artwork. Even the music isnt bad for a Game Boy game. But then you hit the track and its gray on top of more gray. Maybe thats another racer in front of you. Or possibly a cow? Are cows in this game? Is that a tree, or maybe a soccer goal post on the side of the road? Does that make any sense? There could actually be an okay game here, but good luck seeing what the hell is going on when youre racing.5. Batman ForeverIf youre not familiar with Acclaim, they were a publisher infamous for pumping out some of the worst licensed games that have ever seen the light of day in the 90s. The company went out of business in 2004, but they left behind quite the portfolio of questionable titles. Its just surprising they managed to last as long as they did when they were putting out games as terrible as Batman Forever in 1995.Even though this is a traditional beat em up, it uses the Mortal Kombat II engine for some reason, which really doesnt work with this style of gameplay. This was bad enough on the SNES, but was even worse when Acclaim haphazardly ported the game to the Game Boy. The graphics are horrendously plain, the controls barely register your inputs, and its almost impossible to figure out where to go next half the time.4. Men in Black: The SeriesWith limitless potential for creative weapons and unique aliens, Men in Black has all ingredients for a fantastic video game adaptation. Men in Black: The Series takes all of that potential, and completely squanders it on a lazy licensed cash-in. Youll walk. Youll jump. Youll shoot. All of this feels extremely slow and uninteresting, and even though the game claims to have 12 different types of alien enemies, theres barely any difference in how they react to you.Curiously, as boring as the gameplay is, Men in Black: The Series features some oddly high-quality animated sequences for the Game Boy Color. Its worth looking those up on YouTube to see where the games entire budget went, and then completely forgetting about it.3. Shrek: Fairy Tale FreakdownThere are a lot of different routes to go with a Shrek video game. Platforming seems to be the most obvious. Theres also kart racing, or maybe just a general party mini game title. One genre that never seemed like a particularly good idea for the franchise is a fighting game, especially one made specifically for the Game Boy Color. At least characters like Shrek, Fiona, and Lord Farquaad are here, even if they look like something an untalented first grader would draw. You can use them to kick and punch each other and not do much else because the controls are so bad you cant even pull off the combos that are supposedly in the game. Theres also no two-player mode, even though other, only slightly better Game Boy fighting games included that feature years earlier. Its clear that no one really cared about this game and rushed out the cheapest working game they could in order to meet the deadline for the films release.2. Mortal Kombat 4Even the arcade version of Mortal Kombat 4 is considered one of the weaker games in the series. At least its a serviceable fighter, though. The same cant be said about the Game Boy version. The compromises that were made to bring this title to the Game Boy are an affront to the silicon and plastic that make up these cartridges. First, about half the roster was cut for the Game Boy game. That kind of thing was par for the course with Game Boy ports, but it just gets worse from there. The gore was toned down to get a Teen rating from the ESRB, but its not like you can make out much of whats going on anyway. The fighters and backgrounds look like they were made in MS Paint, and the entire soundtrack is composed of about four notes, played on repeat. Beating a tower then becomes an endurance of whether youll get a headache first or just turn the game off out of boredom since you can beat it in about 15 minutes by just crouching and kicking.1. Pit-FighterAs weve repeatedly seen on this list, fighting games just didnt work on the Game Boy. The handheld didnt have the power to run them well, or even enough buttons to make them playable. This was tough for more traditional 2D fighting games, and it was a death sentence for something like Pit-Fighter, which was a little more experimental, with features like letting you move up and down on the screen. The obligatory cuts from the arcade game were made here, and the lost features are sorely missed. Power ups and melee weapons, which actually made the original version of the game kind of fun, are completely absent. The digitized graphics were lazily ported, with no attempt to make them look any better on the underpowered Game Boy. The controls are so fussy that its difficult to get past even the third fight. Pretty much every bad thing about Game Boy games is on full display in Pit-Fighter, easily the worst game on the system.

  • How 1923 Season 2 Establishes the Dutton and Rainwater Yellowstone Legacies
    www.denofgeek.com
When 1923 premiered, creator Taylor Sheridan proved he had a mantra for the second Yellowstone prequel make them earn it. The godfather of Paramounts neo-Western universe apparently learned the meaning of the word longing, and forged a new chapter in the Dutton family legacy that was full of epic cross-continental journeys, lost love, yearning, and families torn asunder. With oceans separating several characters since the season 1 finale, fans have had to wait two years for any semblance of a reunion, but from what key cast members have reported to Den of Geek, it will be well worth the wait. Julia Schlaepfer, who plays Alexandra Dutton informs us that while fans were anxiously awaiting in real time, the journey of the characters continued in their world as well.Alexandras whirlwind romance with her American alpha beau Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) represented an aspect of Sheridans writing that has always been an appeal to fans of his work. Their love, as melodramatic as it can be, is part of a legacy of Dutton romances that show the very heights of passion and the lowest depths of tragedy. With both Spencer and Alex having to make their way to the Dutton ranch in Montana, Alex now finds herself on her own.Between the time we saw her last and now in season two, [Alex] is learning to figure things out for herself, to fend for herself. Schlaepfer says. This gives the character a much needed chance to continue the legacy of almost all Sheridan characters, a resolve bordering on sociopathic stubbornness. Shes getting ready to harness all the strength in the world to get to where she needs to go. Its a much more grounded version of Alex that we see this season. Its not as naive towards the world around her. This is a common struggle that many characters go through in this universe. They all struggle tremendously. They all suffer heartache and tragedy, and yet show admirable determination. Alex represents yet another woman in the Dutton family who possesses this rock hard will.I think she embodies their fierce devotion to family and to one another Schlaepfer says. Shes got this fiery side, and thats very much a Dutton trait. She did grow up in a privileged upbringing, but shes willing to work, shes willing to do whatever she has to, because she loves Spencer, and she wants that life, she wants adventure, she wants to be free. I think shes got this grit that the Duttons just inherently have, and so I think shes a good fit to the family.Yet the Duttons arent the only family that have a legacy to foster in this Yellowstone prequel. First season breakout Aminah Nieves plays Teonna Rainwater, one of the most compelling characters within the entire history of the Yellowstone universe, and a figure that has a familiar link with a contemporary fan-favorite.Teonna is the grandmother of Gil Birminghams Thomas Rainwater, the frenemy of the Dutton family in the modern day fictional Montana of Yellowstone. The Rainwaters, much like the Duttons, represent immeasurable personal strength, as well as a pride of who they are and where they come from. Most of Teonnas struggles in the first season revolved around escaping the horrors of a residential school, and trying to regain her freedom. Its easy to forget that the character is only supposed to be 16 years old, but Nieves reveals this season, we will finally see Teonna live a little, and not merely survive. It is a completely different side of her that has always been there, but now she finally feels a little safer to explore it, Nieves says. I think its really important to see the side of her, not only for herself, but for the audience too. You dont [often] witness pure, innocent, young, indigenous, native, brown love. Its not something that is really focused on in Hollywood. So seeing this little side of her is something Im really excited about.Thats not to say that Teonna wont have a chance to remind viewers what the Rainwaters are all about, however. Nieves puts it succinctly by reminding us that shes a matriarch. I wanted her to be every single thing you could ever think about her. I needed her to be 100 because shes informing any Rainwater thats coming, and that ends at Thomas Rainwater. You can see the [connection] between them with the way that they use their words and the way that they let their silence speak. And it speaks volumes. Theres an undertone of fierceness and strength that is unmatchable.Which is perhaps the perfect word to describe any female character that Sheridan writes, but especially in the Yellowstone Universe fierce. Alexandra and Teonna are the seeds of a ferocity that grows for generations until fans get to see their familys legacy in modern day Montana, but even when it comes to those without a famous surname, Sheridan brings that same fierceness.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!Jennifer Carpenter, who is no stranger to being a part of a famous TV family due to her role as Debra Morgan on Dexter, is a newcomer to the Yellowstone clan Carpenter in 1923 is not a Dutton or a Rainwater, but is still a major cog in the frontier machine as Mamie Fossett, a US Deputy Marshall based on a real life historical figure who was a pioneer when it came to being a woman in a mans world. When asked why Fossett is yet another excellent addition to the catalog of female characters within this universe, Carpenter answers without hesitation because Taylor wrote her. The actor continues to praise Sheridan, and discusses why Fossett is such a great character.I think one thing that is part of Taylors magic is his curiosity. The fact that hes able to be so curious about so many different stories and so many different elements that make up these stories, and that hes willing to excavate until that soil to bring them to life, is why were all enjoying the riches as viewers.1923 season 2 premieres Sunday on Paramount+
