  • Here are cryptos biggest heists after Bybits $1.5 billion hack
    www.fastcompany.com
Cryptocurrency exchange Bybit said last week hackers had stolen digital tokens worth around $1.5 billion, in what researchers called the biggest crypto heist of all time.Bybit CEO Ben Zhou said the crypto was taken from a cold wallet a digital wallet usually stored offline and so supposedly more secure that was used for ether tokens.Blockchain research firm Elliptic said the hack was more than double the last-biggest crypto heist and is almost certainly the single largest known theft of any kind in all time. The crypto industry has suffered a series of thefts, prompting questions about the security of customer funds, with hacking hauls totalling more than $2 billion in 2024 the fourth straight year where proceeds have topped more than $1 billion. Here are some of the other major thefts to have plagued the industry since bitcoin was born in 2008.Poly networkHackers stole around $610 million in August 2021 from Poly Network, a platform that facilitates peer-to-peer token transactions. The hackers behind the heist later returned nearly all of the stolen funds. The hack underscored vulnerabilities in the burgeoning decentralised finance DeFi sector, where users lend, borrow and save in digital tokens, bypassing the traditional gatekeepers of finance such as banks and exchanges.Ronin NetworkHackers stole cryptocurrency worth at the time of the hack around $540 million from a blockchain project linked to the popular online game Axie Infinity in March 2022.Ronin, a network that allows the transfer of crypto coins across different blockchains, said that hackers stole some 173,600 ether tokens and 25.5 million USD Coin tokens.CoincheckIn January 2018, hackers stole cryptocurrency then worth around $530 million from Tokyo-based exchange Coincheck. The thieves attacked one of Coinchecks hot wallet a digital folder stored online to drain the funds, drawing attention to security at exchanges.South Koreas intelligence agency said at the time that a North Korean hacking group may have been behind the heist.Mt. GoxIn one of the earliest and most-high profile crypto hacks, bitcoin worth close to $500 million dollars was stolen from the Mt.Gox exchange in Tokyo then the worlds biggest between 2011 and 2014.Mt.Gox, which once handled 80% of the worlds bitcoin trade, filed for bankruptcy in early 2014 after the hack was revealed, with some 24,000 customers losing access to their funds.WormholeDeFi site Wormhole was hit by a $320 million heist last month, with the hackers making off with 120,000 digital tokens connected to the second-largest cryptocurrency, ether. The crypto arm of Chicago-based Jump Trading, which had the year before acquired the developer behind Wormhole, later replaced the funds to make community members whole and support Wormhole now as it continues to develop.Tommy Reggiori Wilkes, Tom Wilson and Elizabeth Howcroft, Reuters

  • A parliamentary petition to revoke Elon Musks Canadian citizenship is gaining steam
    www.fastcompany.com
Elon Musk is in hot water with our Canadian neighbors to the north.A parliamentary petition with over 192,000 signatures and climbing is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to revoke MusksCanadian citizenship and passport for threatening Canadas sovereignty by engaging in activities that go against the national interest.British Columbia author Qualia Reed launched the petition in Canadas House of Commons, where it was sponsored by parliamentary member Charlie Angus over the weekend, as reported bythe Canadian Press.Musk was born in South Africa, but obtained Canadian citizenship in 1989 through his mother, Maye Musk, who was born in Saskatchewan. The SpaceX CEO and current adviser to President Trump then went on to become a U.S. citizen in 2002.Like a growing number of Americans, many Canadians have had enough of Musks alliance with Trump and his extreme interference at the highest levels of American government. Canadians are also angered by the continued threats to slap high tariffs on goods from our longtime trading partner and ally, along with Trumps outrageous calls to make Canada our 51st state. The petition, launched on February 20, has already surpassed the 500 signatures required for presentation to the House of Commons to garner a formal government response. It calls on Trudeau to revoke Musks Canadian citizenship status and his Canadian passport effective immediately.

  • This BMW Motorrad E-scooter Concept Expertly Combines Minimalism With Maximalism
    www.yankodesign.com
Somewhere between the nostalgia of boxy 80s superbikes and the hyper-clean lines of sci-fi concept art, BMW Motorrad has carved out a visual identity that feels both industrial and theatrical. Their electric two-wheelers dont just embrace minimalismthey weaponize it, stripping away unnecessary ornamentation in favor of sheer geometric presence. This isnt the kind of design made to blend into city traffic. Its the kind that demands a second glance, like a vehicle pulled straight from the pages of Akira or a high-budget cyberpunk film.BMW Motorrads future-forward design language has always balanced sharp geometry with muscular presence, and this e-scooter concept by Carota Design feels like a natural extension of that ethos. It channels the DNA of the BMW Motorrad Concept Link from a few years agobulky yet streamlined, aggressive yet practical. The form factor straddles the line between an urban commuter and a futuristic touring machine, with a sculpted body that looks ready to carve through city streets. The sharp angles and layered panels hint at aerodynamic efficiency while giving the vehicle a commanding, cyberpunk aesthetic.Designer: Carota DesignThe color palette is unmistakably BMW Motorrad. The interplay of matte gray, carbon fiber black, and pops of bright orange creates a visual rhythm that accentuates the e-scooters contours. Orange highlights on the rims, footrests, and rear section feel like design cues taken straight from high-performance motorcycles, making the scooter feel sportier than its form factor might suggest. The tinted windscreen, a signature element from the Concept Link, reappears here with an amber tint, lending a sense of warmth and contrast against the otherwise cool-toned bodywork. The midsection is where the bulk of the e-scooters visual weight sits. The enclosed drivetrain and battery housing are seamlessly integrated, with subtle branding that keeps the aesthetic clean. The absence of visible mechanical components enhances the futuristic appeal, echoing the minimalist philosophy that BMW Motorrad explored with the Vision DC Roadster and other electric concepts. The footrests are embedded within the lower panels, blending into the design rather than protruding awkwardly. The front fairing is one of the most striking elements of this design. Rather than the typical handlebar-mounted display, youve got a transparent display with an orange tint that matches the tinted orange visor on front of the scooter. The choice to mount the display lower within this recessed housing creates a cockpit-like experience, keeping the riders focus within a compact field of view. The angular wing-like structures flanking the front wheel not only contribute to aerodynamics but also reinforce the sense of motion, even when the scooter is stationary. At the rear, the monoshock suspension and carbon-fiber swingarm provide a sense of mechanical sophistication. The orange-accented tail section could have totally been a modular component, with the ability to be swapped out for different configurationsperhaps an extended cargo variant or a passenger-friendly seat option. The taillight is a simple red block that punctuates the aggressive, angular rear fairing, a contrast to the typically flowing designs seen on traditional scooters.BMWs electric two-wheeler concepts have consistently pushed boundaries, and this design by Carota feels like a natural continuation of that vision. The influence of the Concept Link is evident in the bold, blocky surfaces, the layered paneling, and the functional integration of technology. However, where the Concept Link leaned into the idea of an ultra-minimalist, slab-sided vehicle, this e-scooter refines the formula with sharper edges and a more aggressive stance. It feels less like a futuristic prototype and more like something that could actually hit production in the near future. The post This BMW Motorrad E-scooter Concept Expertly Combines Minimalism With Maximalism first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Hate The Nothing Phone (3a) Camera Layout? Heres A Designers Detailed Breakdown Of Why
    www.yankodesign.com
Even though the Phone (3a) doesnt officially launch until the 4th of March, Nothing pre-emptively released the phones design through a YouTube video following some online leaks. As is with any new tech, the internet is thoroughly divided some people are praising Nothing for creating a phone that breaks tradition, experimenting with a layout thats edgy and nonconventional. However, there are others who find the camera bump weird, unplanned, and displeasing. If youre a part of the latter, Im here to explain to you exactly why the Phone (3a)s camera bump is making you feel those feelings. The Phone (3a)s camera bump embraces industrial rawness but not in a way that everyone likes. Sure, exposed screws look great. Ribbon cables add a lot of dynamism. A bare-bones aesthetic can be wonderful. But as a designer with 15 years of experience, the one glaring thing that stands out is just a sheer lack of visual symmetry. On a geometric level, the Phone (3a)s camera layout makes some questionable choices. There are small lapses in symmetry that just feel wrong and objectively the phone might look good, but the camera bump sits out like a sore thumb. I took the liberty to load images into a CAD software so that I could make some rough measurements. A lot of the details are off to a point of pure frustration. The cameras are in a weird polygonal shape, theyre all different sizes, they dont line up even though they should, and hell, even the entire camera bump isnt aligned with the phones body.Designer: NothingIm not hating on the Phone (3a), I love what Nothings done to shake up the tech industry, and more power to them but the camera bump on the (3a) feels like a great movie with just a few plotholes that were difficult to look past. Its difficult to say whether this camera bump was designed as a sort of compromise because they could only fit the camera modules in a certain layout without clashing with other parts, or whether they came up with that layout and then put the blocks in place. Either way, the hardware is (at least on paper) pretty impressive, but it gets a few points deducted on the visual level.Human eyes crave patterns, symmetry, and meaning. Its something were taught in design school when we learn the laws of visual Gestalt. The six laws of Gestalt go as follows Proximity (closely placed objects are grouped visually), Good Figure (these proximal groups are then perceived as single units), Similarity (objects that look similar are perceived as a group), Continuation (the eyes tend to follow a path even if it isnt a direct one), Closure (the eyes complete objects that are obviously incomplete), and finally Symmetry (symmetric objects are perceived as a group). These laws govern every aspect of how our eyes digest the world, and when you break such patterns, the best way to do it is break them with careful consideration. What the Phone (3a)s camera layout does is defy a few simple gestalt laws in a way that feels slightly annoying like gravel in your shoe small enough on its own to really not be a problem, but in this context, be quite discomforting. The layout itself breaks the laws of Symmetry, with a weirdly polygonal shape that has no equal sides or geometric order. Nothings centrally aligned, theres a camera ring on the outside but they arent radially aligned either. Its an odd polygon placed seemingly randomly inside a perfect circle inside a rounded rectangle that is the phone. This weird hierarchy is probably the first thing the eye tends to notice. The cameras are all different sizes, and in some cases even different shapes, violating the Gestalt law of similarity. However, the lenses range from most powerful to least depending on their size, which is reassuring.Human eyes crave some form of symmetry its why the iPhone lenses are an equilateral triangle aligned perfectly inside a square which sits equidistant from the top left corner. The (3a) lacks that symmetry in ways that would otherwise make the camera layout perfect. The main lens sits right off the center of the overall camera bump. It wouldnt be that much of a problem had the camera bump not been made of concentric circles that actually guide the eye to this observation. Theres visual continuity there in the concentric texture, but the main cameras off-center placement breaks things. It also sits inside a capsule-shaped cutout, which sits inside a rounded rectangle which wouldnt be a problem, except their radii dont match.Go into the granular details (and Im being excessively pedantic here) but the two most prominent cameras arent horizontally aligned too. Now the alignment changes between renders Nothing released a photo a fortnight ago that showed a massive misalignment (thats the one Im sharing below). The images from the video today look mildly better, but even in my CAD software, its off by half a millimeter, which at that scale, feels excessive. Just take a look at the alignment issue below. If you zoom out, the entire camera bump itself isnt aligned with the phone! The distance between the silk screen (the paint on the glass to hid the glue lines) and the camera bump shows up to a 2mm difference, with irregularity on the top, left, and right sides. In short, unless I hold the phone and take the measurements myself, these images do show some discrepancies. Discrepancies that might be really small on paper, but theyre enough for your mind to know that somethings off. A piece of spinach stuck in your teeth could be a VERY tiny problem if you measure the spinach fragment compared to your body, but its enough for your brain to notice and fixate on.This kind of obsessive measurement-hounding is something Steve Jobs was notorious for. He famously demanded that circuitry in his machines looked aesthetic. Circuit boards, that nobody would ever look at, were made to look visually pleasing because the devil lay in the details the same approach is what Nothing banks on, with its transparent designs that let you view the circuitry underneath. Heck, Jobs once complained to executives that the yellow color on the O in the Google logo looked off on iPhone screens. He had the color balance adjusted for a logo that wasnt even his.The Phone (3a) series is set to launch exactly a week from now, and I wont lie, Ill be one of the first to tune in and see what Nothing has in store for us. The companys on a warpath to change the perception of tech being serious by making things more unconventional and fun, through their casual, engaging YouTube videos, and even through their products and experiences. The Phone (2) still remains by my side as my secondary device, and the Phone (3a) will undoubtedly make a major impact on the Android market. I just wish that camera bump didnt stand out like such a sore thumb. The post Hate The Nothing Phone (3a) Camera Layout? Heres A Designers Detailed Breakdown Of Why first appeared on Yanko Design.

Apple didn't include MagSafe support in the iPhone 16e. These cases will add back that magnetic magic.iPhone 16e and assorted cases - Image credit: Apple, UAG, CasetifyThe brand-new iPhone 16e is unusual for the iPhone 16 series, as it's the only model that doesn't specifically support MagSafe. It does work with Qi wireless chargers, but it completely lacks the ring of MagSafe magnets that lets it connect to MagSafe chargers and accessories. If you've already invested in a bunch of MagSafe accessories, you'll find they won't work with the iPhone 16e, unless you make an adaptation to the smartphone. You have to add magnetic ability back in. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums
