  • This 730-Square-Foot Wabi-Sabi Home in India Creates an Illusion of Space
    www.architecturaldigest.com
To open up the space, the studio took down a wall in the former L-shaped kitchen, freeing up the compact kitchen, Panwar explains.Organic forms lend softnessthrough furniture, rounded ceilings, and arched elements. Spatially, the living and dining areas are interconnected to maximize the limited space. Sitting under a pendant light is a four-seater dining table.A narrow passage from the living area terminates at the primary and childrens bedrooms. Linen curtains, crisp bedding, well-crafted solid wood furniture, and a cloud bed add to the soft, soothing aesthetic of the home. Muted pinks, bright whites, and pale wood harmonize in the childrens bedroom. The primary bedroom is a soothing place in the already peaceful home.Panwar beautifully carries the principles of wabi-sabi and minimalism into this restrained interior. Playing with natural materials and organically shaped objects and furniture, they have crafted a pocket of quiet in one of the busiest cities in India. This 730-square-foot home was originally published in AD Middle East.

  • Branch Desk Riser Review 2025: Adjustable, Ergonomic Work Table
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Lets be honest. When you think of a desk riser, you dont necessarily think visually beautiful. Weve tested enough office chairs and desks to know that finding something that checks the boxes of ergonomics and compelling design is a tall order. From electric-powered to lift-top options, the style of height-adjustable desks can be pretty blah. A desk riser is a means to get all the ergonomic benefits of a standing desk in a smaller package (not to mention a smaller price tag!) so you dont have to give up your entire office aesthetic. With its streamlined design, the Branch Desk Riser checks all of those boxes. Its minimal construction appeals to a wide range of design sensibilities but has all the ergonomic features of the best standing desks to make your workday more comfortable. The tallest and shortest members of our team put it to the test to see if the sit-stand desk riser style works for a variety of heights and office spaces. Here, the fine print on how it stacks up.Branch Desk RiserSpecsDimensions31"W x 2.5 - 16"H x 24"DMaterialsLaminated plywood, powder-coated aluminumColorsWoodgrain, walnut, white, silverWeight22 lbs.Weight capacity26 lbs.Warranty3 yearsAssembly required?NoDesignAesthetically, the Branch desk riser has a minimalist Scandinavian style that can blend into all kinds of home offices. Unlike most bulky black options on the marketand in line with the modern design of the brands sleek desk chairsit doesnt stick out like a sore thumb. The wood grain colorways (from birch to walnut, white to carbon black) work with what youve got going on to ensure a streamlined desk setup. While its not completely camouflaged, youre ultimately not sacrificing style for ergonomics here. The desk riser is an iteration of one of the brands bestsellers, the Duo desk, thats easily one of the most stylish adjustable standing desks out there. Sharing the same wood top and minimalist frame, it uplifts a WFH setup rather than drag it down with a clunky design.Constructed out of a single piece of wood, there are no harsh lines in its curved silhouette. An incredibly easy assembly process (simply take it out of the box!) further points to its thoughtful design. The downturned front comfort edge is a small but super-useful design detail. Not only does it give the desk riser a fluid shape, it also provides a natural resting point for your wrists, reducing strain. Our ExperienceLauren Arzbaecher, commerce producer: Im in a consistent battle with myself to try and have better posture while at work (one that I often lose). Sitting cross-legged, slouching, hunchingbasically, name any habit of bad posture imaginableeven an ergonomic chair cant stop me! A standing desk converter felt like a way to give myself a fighting chance to help my spine out without fully committing to a standing desk. Though, at five foot ten, finding a desk riser that is tall enough for me when fully extended is usually a challenge.Surprisingly, my height is a nonissue for the Branch riser. It reaches a level (admittedly at the top of its range) for me to easily rest my forearms flush against the desktop when I stand up without hyperextending my shoulders down.

  • Mark Zuckerberg Revealed as Buyer Behind $23 Million Cash Sale of Washington, DC, Mansion
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Mark Zuckerberg is the buyer behind the cash sale of a $23 million mansion in Washington, DCs tony Woodland Normanstone neighborhood, Politico reports. Shortly after the deal was finalized on March 6reportedly marking the citys third-most expensive on recordthe houses image was obscured on Google Maps, hinting at its new owners high profile status.Designed by architect Robert Gurney, the 15,400-square-foot abode blends traditional and modern aesthetics. The home consists of three red brick structures with steeply pitched roofs, connected via two glass walkways. The one-acre plot also features a basketball court, a swimming pool, a vegetable garden, a fire pit, and a spacious lawn, according to the Washingtonian. Unsurprisingly, the property also comes with tight security and is wrapped in tall fencing. It has a beautiful aesthetic but it is locked down, said Kevin Campion of Campion Hruby Landscape Architects, the firm that designed the dwellings outdoor spaces.Zuckerbergs new DC property will allow [him] to spend more time there as Meta continues the work on policy issues related to American technology leadership, a Meta spokesperson told Politico on Wednesdaythe same day that Zuckerberg met with President Trump to lobby for a settlement ahead of the April 14 trial for the Federal Trade Commissions antitrust case against Meta. The Facebook co-founders purchase aligns with what seems to be a trend: Tech billionaires are snatching up multimillion dollar DC area properties left and right. Since Trumps return to office, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, PayPal cofounder David Sacks (now the White Houses AI and crypto czar), and former eBay president Jeff Skoll have all bought homes in the area, joining the ranks of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who bought DC property in 2016, and another PayPal cofounder, Peter Thiel, who did so in 2021.Join NowFlash Sale: Become an AD PRO member today and unlock your design potential.ArrowI think that these people want to be able to meet with the president and members of Congress and the administration when they want to get something done. To do that, they need to be in town, Jennifer Knoll, an expert in Washingtons high-end real estate industry, told Politico. These CEOs have such vast fortunes that purchasing a home in DC, even if theyre overpaying, even if its not a great investment at the price theyre paying, doesnt really matter. The benefits they can reap from relationships with the government can make up for any loss from a bad real estate deal.

  • 8 Best Levoit Products: Tested Air Purifiers & Humidifiers (2025)
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Editor's note: After being challenged by Dyson, Levoit voluntarily removed the True HEPA title from their products. We still found this model to be effective, but if you want the True HEPA filter, you should probably look elsewhere.Levoit Cordless Vacuum CleanerSpecsWeight: 6.17 poundsBattery life: 50 minutesBin capacity: 0.58 LNoise Level: 77.5 dBTheres a lot to love about Levoits first vacuumits cordless design seriously improves the ease of cleaning with its 50-minute run-time, five-stage filtration system, and bin disposal at the touch of a button. The brushroll has a tangle-resistant design to keep hair and pet dander from clogging your vacuum, and the vacuum can lay totally flat for effective under-couch cleaning or deconstruct into a hand vac size. Contributor Terri Williams says its light weight makes it easy to tote around, but notes that it works best on hard floors and rugs, rather than carpet. This Levoit model, she says, is proof that you dont have to spend a lot of money to get a good vacuum.Levoit OasisMist 1000S (10L) Smart HumidifierSpecsCoverage: 600 square feetRun time: 100 hoursSize: 10"D x 8.4"W x 28.7"HWeight: 6.4 lbs.If youre looking for a discreet mister, a tower humidifier is especially easy to hide behind an intentionally-placed snake plant, or fern. Williams says the generous water tank on this one means less frequent, easier refills. The mist levels are adjustable, and are displayed on the LED touch screen itself, along with other stats and control options. Flip through them on the machine itself, via the remote it comes with, or through the accompanying app for hands-free voice control.Photo: Lori KeongLevoit OasisMist Smart Cool and Warm Mist HumidifierSpecsCoverage: 430 square feetRun time: 45 hoursSize: 10.8"D x 6"W x 11.97"HWeight: 5.3 lbs. This slim model bears all the hallmarks of a good humidifieradjustable mist levels, an easy top fill and spacious water storage, and wide coveragebut is especially well-suited for those who love to sync theirs with their phones. Assistant commerce director Lori Keong said the accompanying app made it really easy to sync to and track the humidity of my apartment, plus control the device itselfturning it on, changing the presets, and so on. You can control every feature of this humidifier from your smart phone, even with voice activation. While Keong doesnt like light shows or using my humidifier to disperse essential oils, she can appreciate the pomp and frills of this humidifier: a nightlight option with various colorways and a diffuser inset for oils. Generally, says Keong, this humidifier packs a lot of functionality into a small device, even offering warm air if you get cold at night with a humidifier on.Photo: Lori KeongLevoit LVAC-300 Stick VacuumSpecsWeight: 6.61 poundsBattery life: 120 minutesBin capacity: 0.75 LNoise Level: 77.5 dBThe LVAC-300 is LVAC-200s souped-up counterpart. The LVAC-300 maintains what Williams loved about the 200the filtration system, the tangle-resistant design, but offers a longer maximum runtime (up to 60 minutes vs. 50), and a redesigned brush assembly for reduced tangling.Compared to the discontinued Tineco stick vacuum Keong was using before, she thinks this one is definitely savvier. I love that the display screen tells you exactly how much battery life is left, and I was able to vacuum the entirety of my teeny apartment around 300 square feet without even breaking 90% battery life on eco mode. While she was slightly less impressed by the power suction of eco mode when faced with a popcorn kernel, turbo mode eventually took care of it.Another perk is the simplicity of assemblythe vacuum arrived in a box small enough that I questioned how the whole thing fit in there, but lo and behold it was, and the ensuing setup was extremely easy. If youre looking for Dyson aesthetic and rivaling quality, Keong found this looks and feels like a Dyson but doesnt cost upwards of $500: I think its a great alternative for anyone whos on a budget and wants a slightly tech-enhanced model that deconstructs for small space living.Photo: Rachel FletcherLevoit Vital 200S-P Air PurifierSpecsCoverage: 1,100 square feetNoise Level: 23 dBDimensions: 6.4"D x 12.8"W x 16.1"HFilter replacements: Replacement filters cost $65, suggested replacement every 12 monthsCommerce director Rachel Fletcher describes this air purifier as a powerful machine at a reasonable price point. With a coverage zone of up to 1,100 square feet, its ideal for a medium-to large-size home or apartment that could use some better air filtration. It passed Fletchers ultimate testcooking fishsomething she loves to do but often avoids because the smell can linger in her small space. I turned the purifier on during and after the cooking process and there was absolutely no detectable smell almost immediately after I ate my dinner, she says.As a pet owner, she hasnt clocked a notable difference in pet hair or dust, but takes comfort in knowing its cleaning the air of the most harmful particulates and keeping my space fresh. It operates on a barely noticeable hum unless its going at full speed, and was so easy to get up and running that Fletcher said she didnt even need to crack the manual to set it up.Editor's note: After being challenged by Dyson, Levoit voluntarily removed the True HEPA title from their products. We still found this model to be effective, but if you want the True HEPA filter, you should probably look elsewhere.Levoit LV600HH Hybrid Ultrasonic HumidifierSpecsCoverage: 753 square feetRun time: 50 hoursSize: 11.3"D x 7"W x 10.5"HWeight: 6.5 lbs. With a 1.5 gallon water tank and a 50-hour run time, we love the basics of this humidifier but are pleased to see it also doesnt require filter replacements, which can oftentimes be expensive and hard to install. It has a significant coverage zoneup to 753 square feetso its perfect for large rooms. It also functions as either an ultrasonic cool mist humidifier or a warm mist humidifier, so it can be used year-round. Levoit doesnt list the noise level, but Williams, our tester, described it as whisper-quiet.

  • Explore a Young Familys NYC Duplex, Where Classic Elegance Meets Modern Life
    www.architecturaldigest.com
The clients didnt want it to feel as if they had inherited their grandmothers apartment, designer Christine Gachot remembers thinking at the outset of a top-down renovation of an Upper East Side prewar duplex for a couple with four young children. Having relocated to uptown Manhattan from Tribeca, they wanted something fresh, but they did want to keep some of that traditional sensibility.Christinewho, alongside her husband, John Gachot, runs the namesake firm noted for dreamy, cinematic interiors that blend contemporary and classic elementsknew at once they could deliver what the homeowners had in mind. Spread over two floors in a 1907 American Beaux Arts building by Delano & Aldrich, the residence had ample space, but, says John, it had really been lived in, chopped up, and adapted for the previous owner. Poring over original floor plans from the building and similar edifices nearby, the designers were able to craft a layout that would feel original but could perform as a forever home for this growing family. The living room of an Upper East Side duplex gut-renovated by John and Christine Gachot, of NYC-based firm Gachot, alongside general contractor Fiocchi Group, for a discerning couple with four young children, blends comfort with old-world elegance. Pastellone plaster walls painted in Benjamin Moores White Dove, ornamental moldings, and an Arabescato mantel from Jamb provide a subdued envelope for a mix of vintage and custom furnishings. The Gunnel Nyman club chairs, sourced by Hostler Burrows, wear a cream wool from ALT for Living and complement the bespoke sofas wrapped in nutmeg mohair from Angela Brown LTD. The round marble-and-brass coffee table was also designed by Gachot. Illuminating the space after sunset are circa-1940 floor lamps by Lysberg and Hansen, sourced by Jackson Design, and a double-silk ceiling fixture from Gong.Architecturally, the aim was to carve out spaces that would adapt with the familys changing needs over time. The apartments working wood-burning fireplaces would become the focal points for the homes public areas downstairs, in what would ultimately become the living room and den. Fortunately, the expansive living room could comfortably accommodate a formal dining table for eight or more, which allowed the owners to transform the former dining room into a sunny breakfast/play area adjacent to the kitchen.Upstairs, on the more private level, one of the abodes six bedrooms was turned into a secondary playroom for toys and books. And, in an especially ingenious gesture, a mudroom for stroller parking was created adjacent to that floors entry in such a way that it could one day be converted into a home gym or office. Phases of life change, so those spaces need to be able to adapt to tweens, teenagers, and then eventually to making closets bigger, explains John. There are these little adjacencies we planned on.The sunny kitchen was designed to be both traditional in appearance and highly functional. The millwork, painted in Benjamin Moores Shadow Gray, oak-herringbone floors by J. Rapaport Wood Flooring, and subtle marble with delicate veining create a soothing atmosphere at any time of day. Waterworks fixtures, RW Guild ceiling fixtures, and Simonini counter stools complete the look. This felt like it could architecturally have fit into that original apartment with a few updates, observes John of the family hub.The breakfast room is the locale of casual family meals and gatherings throughout the day. A custom ceiling light by Gachot and Scandinavian sconces sourced by Bloomberry cast a warm light on the Dedar-covered built-in banquette, oak table by Alfred Newall, and Freda Razor dining chairs by Hati Home. Its kind of the old Parisian apartment trick, says Christine. You put modern furniture in a traditional backdrop and it somehow just looks perfect every time. With the core structural plan in place, the Gachots took the same evolutionary approach to the interior decoration, creating a timeless backdrop for future chapters. They gave traditional architectural detailsplaster walls, crown moldings, baseboards, marble mantels, and trimsa delicate update with profiles, proportions, and finishes that feel clean and refined. Theres so much room for them to add their own layer, says Christine of the brief. When you are looking at a young family, they have a long way to go of collections and travels and experiences that will only add to the breadth of the home. The library, lined in solid white oak, smacks of old-world Manhattan, but its custom sectional and Milo Baughman tub chair, all covered in mohair, are conducive to kicking back on movie nights. Even the formal living room pairs rare piecesa rosewood-and-mahogany cabinet from the 1930s, Gunnel Nyman club chairs, a Fantasia coffee table by Philip and Kelvin LaVernewith durable, plush custom seating and airy double-silk ceiling light fixtures. The timeless English-inspired kitchen, aglow with light bouncing off of subtle marble counters, light-gray walls, and oak-herringbone floors, retains a crisp, New Yorkcentric efficiency. In lieu of having a grand staircase, the team elected to maximize usable space elsewhere. Here, in the upstairs landing, illuminated by a brass-and-silk ceiling fixture designed by Gachot, a mahogany handrail, bronze stair spindles, and stained oak-parquet floors emphasize the apartments timeless quality. On the wall, Jim Shaws The Land of the Octopus 6, adds color and movement. The familys art, too, plays a crucial role in this story of evolution, finding the sweet spot between old and new. Working with personal art consultant Anne Bruder, the Gachots and their clients added another layer of meaningful personality with thoughtfully placed pieces: a textured Dan Colen canvas in the entry hall, serene pieces by Louise Lawler and Katherine Bradford in the living room, and colorful Jim Shaw works in the upstairs landing and primary bedroom. In a home built for change, that latter serene, expanded hideawaywith its walls wrapped in creamy Dedar silk, 1940s club chairs wearing a jaunty yellow Sahco pattern, and Pinch bed covered in a natural C&C Milano fabricis perhaps the only area intentionally given a more permanent, anchored vibe. The clients knew what they liked, and thats really half the battle, says Christine, who, a fellow parent of young children and also a recent downtown-to-uptown transplant, felt particularly close to this project. If you have people that are willing participants and come with knowledge, theyre sitting at the table with you, and its lovely. Reflecting on the process, John nods in agreement: Youre producing their movie. It was a real treat to walk in and be like, Yes, this place is amazingI can do something, John remembers thinking when first visiting the apartment pre-renovation. Here, the team carved out a formal dining area in a space between the commodious living room and den. The expandable custom table, designed by Gachot and fabricated by Fischer Furniture, is surrounded by rosewood dining chairs from Modernity covered in fabric by Prelle. The 1960s brutalist credenza from Spain, sourced by Morentz, is topped by a French crystal lamp from Danke Galerie and an Art Deco coffee and tea set found at Maison Gerard. The building is iconic and beautiful, shares Christine of the venerable address. Its [built to have] room after room of discovery. The oak-paneled library strikes a more traditional note while plush furnishingsincluding a custom sectional sofa covered in moss Marci mohair and swivel tub chair by Milo Baughman in Holland & Sherrys Rive Gauche mohairencourage casually kicking back. The space is illuminated by a circa-1946 floor lamp from Ponce Berga, custom double-silk ceiling fixture by Gachot, and Modulightor picture lights. A side table in the form of a Gunnera leaf by Cox London, custom coffee table by Gachot, and elephant-shaped storage box by Pamela Weir-Quiton stand on a custom area rug by VandenLoom. The idea was to give [the clients] their own little sanctuary, John says of the serene primary bedroom with its own seating area. If the nanny is spending the night, they can close the door and have their suite to themselves and not be disturbed. On one end of the room, a Moreau bed by Pinch is covered in a custom Charvet linen bedspread and flanked by maple-and-brass tables by Tommi Parzinger, sourced by Donzella. The lamps are 1950s Murano Sommerso, sourced on 1stDibs. A pair of 1940s club chairs covered in a patterned silk by Sahco and sourced by H. Gallery populates the other end of this space. The drapery is cut from an ivory Holland & Sherry wool.A view into the wifes own bathroom, where Imperial Danby from Beata & Agnes Stone Gallery and the Venetian plaster walls and ceiling enhance a sense of peace. The unlacquered Waterworks fixtures complement the Scandinavian ceiling fixture, sourced by Bloomberry, and Mr. Shower Door frame. The oak-and-leather stool, meanwhile, is from Nickey Kehoe.Another girls bedroom demonstrates how the Gachots thoughtfully maximized storage throughout; even the bed is tucked into a niche to make room for a built-in bookcase in the threshold leading to a shared bathroom. The wallpaper, by Helen Blanche, was sourced from Temple Studio, while the Pinch bed is covered in a linen fabric from Designs of the Time. Samuel & Sons tassels hang from cabinet pulls from the Brass Center. The girls rooms are as cute as crackers, says Christine. Theyre just so charming. In the twins domain, the Gachots, known for their penchant for calm interiors, answered the homeowners call for a dose of pattern by covering the walls and beds, fabricated by Charles H. Beckley, in a delicate floral print from Peony & Sage. A 1960s glass lamp with pleated shades by Lamptouch adorns a dresser from Trove by Studio Duggan beside a burl-wood table sourced on 1stDibs. The striped Roman shade wears a fabric from Soane Britain. In a downstairs powder room, a hand-painted gold-and-blue silk wallpaper by Fromental adds whimsy surrounding the custom St. Laurentmarble sink from Novo Marble. Waterworks fixtures, an Alix D. Reynis sconce, and mirror by Soyun K. round out the transportive space.

  • 4 Best Steam Cleaners in 2025, Tested and Reviewed by AD
    www.architecturaldigest.com
The best steam cleaners are absolute game changers for keeping every last crevice of your floors spotless. Sure, soapy hot water is a trusty standby, but it cant always remove built-in grime without a lot of elbow grease involved. The addition of chemical-based cleaning products in can increase cleaning power, but at what cost? Many of those contain harsh ingredients that can be harmful to humans, pets, and household surfaces alike. Meanwhile, steam only needs water heated to a high temperature to loosen up dirt and grime, plus sanitize surfaces. There are steam cleaners designed to clean everything from hard floors to carpet to tile and grout, along with upholstery and other fabrics. Below, I (AD's resident expert on cleaning devices) tested several highly rated options to find ones that help you work smarter, not harder, to keep surfaces spic and span. Our Top Picks for the Best Steam Cleaners:Best Overall Steam Cleaner: Black & Decker Steam Mop, $130 $100Best Vacuum: Tineco Floor One S7 Steam, $600Best Handheld: Bissell OmniReach Handheld Cleaner, $50Best Steam Mop: Shark Steam Mop, $70 $50Browse by CategoryThe Best Steam Cleaners, OverallPhoto: Terri WilliamsBlack & Decker Steam MopUpsidesCan be used on multiple surfacesIncludes a squeegee and three brushesIncludes storage wall mountGarment steamer with sockDownsidesMay be difficult to find extra Black & Decker padsSpecsType: Steam mop/handheldWeight: N/ATank capacity: 50 mlMax temperature: N/AHeat time: 30 secondsSurface capabilities: Hard floors, upholstery, clothes, windows, tile and groutAccessories included: Garment steamer with sock, handheld steam mop, floor extension, small pivoting mop head, accessory adapter, nylon scrub brush, grout brush, squeegee, floor mop pad, small mop pad, mesh bag, garment head, wall mount, pole accessory holderAccounting for all the many reasons someone would purchase a steam cleaner, the Black & Decker Steamer (or Steam Mop) is the best choice for most people: Its a super versatile option for just a hair over $100, with several attachments at your disposal. Its also easy to assemble and use, heating up to steam in just 30 seconds, with a user-friendly steam interface that toggles between low-steam and high-steam settings. The low setting worked well for gently steam-cleaning my hardwood floors, and the mop head pivots to easily maneuver around corners. The floor mop head does a good job of dispensing steam evenly without leaving a mess, as well. Other attachments, from a squeegee to a garment steamer option, also add versatility though I wasnt tempted to forego my dedicated handheld garment steamer or Windex and paper towels for them long-term.The grout brush and small detail brush in particular made it easy to clean my bathroom and kitchen, though bear in mind there is also a metal grate brush for clearing baked-in grime off appliances and a countertop mop pad for wiping away crumbs and dirt if you want more surface cleaning options. I didnt end up needing to use most of the attachments, but the option to have them all is great for the price, and the machine-washable mop pads even come with their own mesh storage bag. Cleanup is everything, and theres even a wall-mountable storage bin for keeping the steam mop and attachments handy and off the floor.Photo: Terri WilliamsTineco Floor One S7 SteamUpsidesBattery-operatedSeparate clean and dirty water tanksSmart LED screen2 steam modes and 2 non-steam modesSelf-cleaningQuick dryingDownsidesQuite expensiveSpecsType: Floor washerWeight: 13.54 lbs.Tank capacity: 0.8L (clean water tank); 0.72L (dirty water tank)Max temperature: 284 degreesHeat time: N/ASurface capabilities: Hard floorsAccessories included: Dry filter, extra brush roller, cleaning tool, charging dockWhat on earth is a floor washer, you might ask? Simply put, its the best of both worlds. The sleek and stylish Tineco Floor One S7 Steam combines the convenience and power of one of the best wet-dry vacuums with the power of steam, so Im able to vacuum, mop, and steam my hard floors. In fact, the Floor One S7 Steam offers two steam modes, and the iLoop technology can even detect the mess level and adjust to the appropriate modesuch as deep cleaning if its been awhile since your last wipe-down.Honestly, the only reason this wasnt our top pick is that we werent sure that the average person looking for a steam cleaner would want to shell out $600 for a floor cleaner that cant be used anywhere else. However, if youre primarily looking for a steam cleaner, we highly recommend this deluxe model. Its cordless, with no bulky cord to trip over, and the battery run time is 20 minutes when using the powerful steam feature (40 minutes when using non-steam functions).Since it uses the same type of brush rollers as a regular wet-dry vacuum, the feel is much sturdier than a steam mop, and it does a much better job of picking up wet messes and removing stains for a deeper cleaning. The continuous clean-brush washing system also uses a brush scraper to remove gunk from the brush roll and prevent buildup, and replaces the dirty water with clean water. The self-cleaning (and self-drying) system also eliminates the need for me to take an active role in the cleaning process.Photo: Terri WilliamsBissell OmniReach Handheld CleanerUpsidesGreat pricePlenty of accessories3 bristle brushes, grout tool, flat scraperAngle concentrator toolDownsidesDoesnt clean floorsSpecsType: HandheldWeight: 4 lbs.Tank capacity: 6.6 ozMax temperature: N/AHeat time: N/ASurface capabilities: Hard surfaces, toys, clothingAccessories included: Fabric steamer, window cleaner, extension hose, accessory nozzle, 3 color-coded round bristle brushes, grout cleaning tool, flat scraper tool, angle concentrator toolBissell is known for making some of the best vacuums and carpet cleaners out there, like the Little Green Steam Cleaning Machine and the Big Green Cleaning Machine, that its no surprise their handheld steam cleaner is an excellent choice, too. If you want one specifically for above-floor cleaning in the kitchen and bathroom, the Bissell OmniReach Handheld Cleaner has your name written on it. It includes numerous accessories, including a window cleaner, three round bristle brushes, a tool for cleaning grout, flat scraper tool, and even an angle concentrator tool. There are so many attachments designed to make quick work of my cleaning tasks that, sometimes, I was just walking around my home trying to find places to clean with the handheld steamer. The trigger control makes it easy to release steam on demand, and the measuring cup helps ensure I dont overfill the water tank on the handheld steam cleaner. The extension hose also comes in handy for accessing inconvenient places, while the handy flat scraping tool makes it easy to remove baked-on messes. The brush for cleaning grout gets into all those mildewy crevices in your bathroom, while the round brushes do a great job cleaning toothpaste and gunk around the faucets and in the sink.I used the fabric sanitizer on a pillow with good results, and the steam squeegee helped to clean my bathroom mirrors without leaving streaks. I also put it to the test steam cleaning my drapes and curtains. Usually, when cleaning the kitchen and bath areas, its not uncommon for me to wish that I had an additional tool for a specific cleaning function. The OmniReach is like the Swiss Army knife of handheld cleanersand I was always able to find just the right attachment when needed.Photo: Terri WilliamsShark Steam MopUpsidesLightweight but sturdySwivel headRemovable water tankDownsidesNo accessories besides padsSpecsType: Steam mopWeight: 4.6 lbs.Tank capacity: 6.68 oz.Max temperature: N/AHeat time: 30 secondsSurface capabilities: Hard floorsAccessories included: PadsIf youre looking for a sturdy steam mop thats lightweight and easy to navigate into corners and back and forth, the Shark Steam Mop earns our vote for the best steam mop. Its easy to assemble and very user-friendly, with an extra-large water tank that doesnt require frequent refills. It only takes 30 seconds for the water to heat up, and since the water tank is removable, its a lot easier to fill and empty itan ideal perk for at-home use.

  • The Residence Offers a Peek Inside the White Housebut What Really Goes Into Running the Presidents Private Quarters?
    www.architecturaldigest.com
If they share one unifying quality, it is the ability to keep secrets, wrote Kate Anderson Brower of the White House staff in her 2015 book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House. The book is the basis for the new Netflix show of the same name, but thats where the similarities end. Browers tome is a journalistic account of several generations of workers in the private living quarters of the president of the United States and his family, whereas The Residence features a neurodivergent-coded detective named Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba) solving the murder of the head usher (played by Giancarlo Esposito). The murder mystery exists at the intersection of Elsbeth and Shondalands other White House show, Scandal, combining political intrigue with parlor-room puzzlementand that parlor happens to be located in the most famous house in America. As Cupp attempts to suss out potential suspects across the domestic and wider presidential staff, were introduced to the housekeepers, butlers, kitchen and wait staff, engineers, custodians, curators, florists, gardeners, event planners, and secret service agents who serve at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The show dramatizes what it might be like to work in the White House, but just how true to life is it, murder aside? In a scene from The Residence, the cast stands in a room that appears to resemble a past iteration of the White Houses Blue Room.Photo: JESSICA BROOKS/NETFLIXThe White House features a labyrinthine 132 rooms across six floors and two mezzanines. The executive residence is located in the center of the building, and includes numerous State Rooms, plus the private quarters of the first family on the second floor and third floors. Prior to 1902, the presidents office was located in the residence, but Theodore Roosevelt had it moved to what is now known as the West Wing. Today, it takes around 100 full-time and 250 part-time employees to keep the residence running smoothly, including the head usherthe murder victim on the showwho is basically the chief of staff. The sheer number of workers are there to alleviate the burdens of daily life for the first family, who generally have no time to cook, shop, or clean, Brower writes.

The gala was themed Splendor in the Shadows, Purpose in the Light.Photo: Alberto VasariLast night, masked revelers streamed into New Yorks Cathedral of St. John the Divine for DIFFAs (Design Industries Foundation) annual fundraising gala. • Inside an Editor and Sculptors 800-Square-Foot Craftsman Bungalow in LA
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Historic homes often lose their charm when theyre remodeledbut Anna Furmans 1912 Craftsman bungalow was enhanced by the architect who reimagined it for modern living. Especially in LA, old houses are either gut-renovated to hell in a soulless, sterile way or theyre falling apart at the seams, says Furman, a sculptor and Associated Press editor. This house really felt like a Goldilocks situation. Its 100-plus years old, and its retained a lot of its original character, but its been updated to bring natural light in.In 2007, Barbara Bestor, whos known for taking really simple materials and transforming them into playful-yet-practical design elements, used an abundance of honey-toned plywood to overhaul the abode for the previous tenants. Furman was attracted to the warmth of the humble veneer that Bestor created, which appears on the wall cladding, kitchen counters, and built-in seating and storage throughout. I lucked out with that, she reflects.Short, wood stools are peppered around the home. I use those as sculpture stands if Im being scrappy, says Furman. Sometimes I use them for plants, or Ill have friends over for a movie night, so theyre just extra seating. I have a projector that comes down on the wood wall.I made that last year and it just immediately made sense to me in that corner, Furman says of her green lamp. It anchors the couch in placenot literally, but visually. It looks organic, but also not of this world. Thats how I think about a lot of my art.Furman also loved that Bestor had vaulted the once-dropped ceiling, creating an airy, relaxed vibe despite the compact footprint. My work is very intense and demanding, so I wanted to find a home that would feel like a little oasisa calm, earthy place thats still in the middle of the city, she says. Its perched on a hill in a way that makes it feel like a little tree house, which is nice. When it came to refurnishing the space to make it her own, Furman let cherished heirlooms and artworks lead the way. In the living area, for example, her favorite quilt lays on the custom sage green cushions she had fabricated for the built-in sofa. My most prized possession is that quilt, she shares. Its made by my great-grandpa, Max Meyers, and he repurposed these scraps of fabric from clothes that my mom and her siblings had outgrown. Its these anchor pieces in my house that are connected to family history.Shop out the look of the house Furmans sofa is adorned with a Praying Mantis at the Park throw pillow by Lorien Stern and a red Dash pillow by Dusen Dusen, where she worked as the brands first intern years ago.I wanted to have a calm, earthy feel, so a light green couch definitely felt natural and connected to the plants in the room, Furman says. I just went downtown, to the Garment District, and touched fabric and picked one based on instinct. Then I found a guy to cut it up and make cushions. The sitting zone also features a white marble collared shirt sculpture, a nude figure Risograph, and a colorful screen print of chairs, all of which belonged to Furmans grandmother. She paired these beloved items with a vintage cane-and-velvet armchair, a pineapple painting by Julio Cesar Williams, and her own biomorphic ceramic lamp. It is a lot of bringing the old and the new together and bringing my friends and my friends of friends work together with my artit has been really fun, she notes. The checker mirror was made by an outsider artist, Furman shares. I found it in Laurel Canyon on Craigslist. It was sitting in someones backyard and I brought it to Ballards Artwork Framing, which did a really beautiful job. They put the frame inside it. There were no 90-degree angles inside, so they made it fit. It is just such a weird piece that felt like a relic of another time.In the dining section, Furman combined vintage bentwood chairs from the Rose Bowl Flea Market with a Hilma af Klint print, a checker mirror from Craigslist, and a 1980s Luchita Hurtado chalk drawing. That one is really special because I met and interviewed Luchita before she was signed with Hauser & Wirth, she explains. She is just such an inspiration. I wish I could live inside so many of her paintings. I found it through an online auction, which was very exciting because I otherwise would not be able to afford her work.Pleated pendants hang over the island, which is accompanied by a set of secondhand counter stools.Next to the oven, up on the wall, theres a print made by my friend Lauren Martin, Furman says. Above it, there is this ravioli rolling pin. Its antique, Im told, and it was from the sale at Marta gallery. It was in the owners house. And I just love it because all the grooves show their wear and it just fit to me right there as part of the frame. The big island, which is made of stacked plywood topped with white laminate, doubles as extra workspace when Furman is crafting larger pieces, but most of her sculpting happens in the studio at the end of the long kitchen (and at a ceramics studio called Clay CA). Her Pipersong Meditation Chair allows her to toil away for hours. I am a very fidgety person and I get aches and pains when Im working for long stretches of time, she reveals. Its really perfect because it moves into a lot of different positions.Furmans bedroom, with its George Nelson Cigar Bubble pendants and Dusen Dusen Hepta coverlet, is defined by the four floating shelves filled with books from end to end. Books feel pretty central to my life, so it made sense to have them in my bedroom, she considers. I also wanted to preserve the plywood wall in the great room. I wanted the wall to stand on its own. It is one of the standout features of the home, after all.Though its more often found on the sofa, Furmans treasured quilt occasionally makes a bedroom appearance. Its this patchwork of family history, she says. I dont think my great grandfather thought of himself as an artist. He was a tailor, like so many Jewish men of that generation, but I see his work as art.I bought it at a time when I was really wanting to bring more rituals into my day-to-day life, so it has candles on it and this clear glass piece that I really love the feel of, Furman says of the antique tiered shelf in her bedroom. And Im drawn to the visual language of Uruguayan artist Gonzalo Fonseca, especially stairways.Furman and her pup Goldie lounge on the built-in sofa.Furmans studio includes a lofted, full-size bed for guests who want to stay overnight.Clay and metal are Furmans primary mediums of art.Furman sketches, prototypes, and trims her sculptures in her home studio.Shop it out:Crate & Barrel Waffle Terry Dish Towels (Set of 2)West Elm Remy Bath StoolDusen Dusen Oven MittLorein Stern Praying Mantis Throw Pillow Case"All Fours" by Miranda JulyDusen Dusen Pillow CoverSplattered Mug by Peter ShireDusen Dusen Dash PillowHerman Miller Nelson Cigar Bubble PendantSusan Alexandra Ash Tissue BoxDusen Dusen Hepta Bed Set

  • The Bissell Little Green Mini, Tested and Reviewed (2025)
    www.architecturaldigest.com
The delivery was fastit just took a matter of days to arrive at my doorstep after the order was placed. Unlike some of the bulky appliances in my space, this was lightweight to pick up and carry inside. To put things in perspective, the standard version of the cleaning tool is about 10 pounds and measures at around the size of a window HVAC unit. The mini is only seven pounds and has a footprint thats about of the size. In short, storage has been a breeze. It fits under my kitchen sink and easily tucks inside my storage closet without cramping the space. The setup itself was pretty intuitive. It came with a printout of the instructions that I followed to clip the power cord and four-foot cleaning hose properly to the appliance. From there, I filled up the clean water tank with warm water and the trial size cleaning solution that was included with my package. The only thing left was to attach the bristle brush to the hose and get to cleaning. The SpecsPhoto: Nashia BakerPhoto: Nashia BakerThis Bissell Little Green Mini resembles its full-size counterpart with the same signature stain remover tool. As mentioned, it comes with a bristle brush thats been a lifesaver with removing spillseven thick messes like mustard (more on that below!)from my carpet. The deep cleaner removes drippage after several passes (it took about 10-plus to get the aforementioned mustard off my rug, oops) using its suction power. Even though it has a spray component that is helpful for wetting and targeting dried-on spills with cleaning solution, I wouldnt classify it as a steam cleaner. The pressure I put on the handle allows the machine to pull and lift stains from the surface of fabrics. The VerdictIm officially a fan. The trending mini cleaning machine targets messes before stains set in, which is especially great for carpet cleaningand way more than the average vacuum can do. My only note is that it would be even better if it had a cordless design.Final verdict: I would recommend this upholstery cleaner to anyone like me who constantly battles with cleanup but doesnt want to compromise their space with a bulky gadget. The original has a larger tank capacity (a whopping 48 ounces in comparison to the minis 16-ounce tank) that might be a better fit for people who are tackling messes left and right throughout their home. And unlike the bigger version, this one is a lot less expensive if you dont want to commit to a steeper price tag. I havent been disappointed with my experience, but it comes with a two-year warranty, just in case.More AD-Approved Cleaning AppliancesFrom air purifiers to robot vacuums, browse below for even more cleaning essentials that have earned our editors stamps of approval to keep their homes spick-and-span:BISSELL Little Green Portable Spot and Stain CleanerDyson Gen5detect Absolute VacuumAmazonTerri WilliamsShark HydroVac MessMaster Cordless Wet-Dry VacuumAmazonNashia BakerCoway Airmega AP-1512HH(W) True HEPA PurifierRubbermaid Reveal Power ScrubberPhoto: Lauren ArzbaecheriRobot Roomba i3+ EVO (3554) Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum

  • Revisiting Val Kilmers Soulful Santa Fe Home
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Below, we revisit ADs 1998 tour of Kilmers Pueblo-style Santa Fe home, where he lived for over a decade. Katie SchultzThis article originally appeared in the April 1998 issue of Architectural Digest. To even have a chance of doing anything unique, you have to know who you are, says actor Val Kilmer. As a result, you should live where you feel most yourself. For the star of The Saint (1997) and At First Sight, that is Santa Fea place where the facts of land bump up against mysticism on a daily basis. Take the mountains in New Mexico, says Kilmer. There's something very hard and dangerous about the cliffs herethey're not solid granite, so rocks can move and you can die climbing. Yet in the midst of that jagged canvas you'll suddenly come upon this crazy, Barnum and Bailey burst of wildflowersDay-Glo orange sprinkled with purplethe perfect bouquet. He pauses, smiling. Theres irony herelike in life. For the classically trained actor who electrified Jim Morrison on-screen in The Doors (1991) and then went on to re-create the Caped Crusader in Batman Forever (1995), irony is familiar terrain. Known for his brilliant, often tempestuous talent, Kilmer has staked his claim in territory as unpredictable as the man himself. In New Mexico it's easier to understand that there's more than one absolute, says Kilmer, whose love affair with the Southwest dates back to his California boyhood and family camping trips to Arizona and New Mexico. (Kilmer grew up in the San Fernando Valley, next door to Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. When Trigger died, they stuffed himstanding on his hind legsand put him in the living room, he recalls. Then their dog Bullet died, and they did the same thing to him. We were always afraid that if Dale died, we'd walk in one day and find her, stuffed and holding a tray, in the kitchen.)Then there's the weather here, he continues. In the course of a day it can be clear, get cloudy and snow and then get sunny and the snow melts. You never know what to expect.Eighteen years ago the only thing the actor expected when he drove through Santa Fe on his way to New York and the Juilliard School, where hed been accepted as a drama student, was a couple of nights layover in Santa Fe. Three and a half months later he reluctantly drove out of town, beginning a commuter romance between Santa Fe and wherever he happened to be working at the time.Seven years ago he put down official roots by buying twenty-seven acres of prime property in Tesuque (home to Ali MacGraw and Gene Hackman, among others). Though the land was spectacular, the house on it wasn't, as Kilmer and his then wife, English actress Joanne Whalley, moved into what he describes as a seventies condominium-looking wreck with glass walls. (Albeit one with a colorful past: The former tenants left bullet holes scattered throughout a bedroom.)

  • The Tadao Ando Malibu House Once Abandoned by Kanye West Finds a New Buyer
    www.architecturaldigest.com
The Tadao Ando Malibu house that Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, previously owned and gutted, has already found a new buyer days after returning to the market, per the Wall Street Journal. The oceanfront compound, designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese starchitect, was up for grabs last week at $39 million. Belwood Investments, led by founder Steven Bo Belmont, has now revealed the firm has already accepted an all-cash offer between $30 to $34 million for the partially-restored property. The dwelling now reportedly is under contract with Andrew Mazella Ventures LLC, a Montana-based luxury home developer. The deal is set to close on May 1.The rear of the home faces the Pacific Ocean.Photo: The Oppenheim Group/RogerDaviesWest, who paid $57.3 million for the 4,000-square-foot structure in 2021, attempted to turn the architectural masterpieces into a modern bomb shelter. The disgraced musician and fashion mogul completely stripped and destroyed the famous property, leaving it as a concrete shell without plumbing, electricity, or a roof, and exposing it to debris and spray from the Pacific Ocean. The rapper listed the property in December 2023 for $53 million after failing to complete renovations and following an ongoing lawsuit with former constructors who worked on the project. The most recent owner, who purchased the home from West, made significant repairs.Photo: The Oppenheim Group/RogerDaviesJoin NowFlash Sale: Become an AD PRO member today and unlock your design potential.ArrowBelmont purchased the three-story house in September 2024 for $21 million with plans to restore the brutalist structure back to its original state. The entrepreneur hired architecture firm Marmol Radziner to oversee the $8.5 million project, and new roof, plumbing, electrical, and framing has since been added to the home. Mazzella, who tells WSJ that hes a fan of Andos work, has yet to announce when the houses restoration will be complete, or if he will continue to work with the same architects used by Belmont during the initial stages of the renovations.

You can find everything from teak to pine wood options readily available in a range of designsfrom midcentury modern styles with angled legs to more low-lying contemporary styles. A basic platform bed in a solid wood grain is always a neutral building block to outfit a bedroom if your furniture tastes are constantly evolving. And thanks to their longevity and sturdy nature, wooden bed frames are also an all-around solid option that avoids the clanking of metal on metal joinery.Luckily, our editors and writers have tested lots of solid wood bed frames over the years, many backed by generous warranties and return policies. Here, weve pulled together a list of all the finest ones weve tried from high-end brandsincluding some quality bed frames on Amazon. Whether youre looking for something that takes less than 20 minutes of setup time or a modern design that leans away from dated farmhouse tropes, you shouldnt have any problems with these vetted picks (knock on wood). Our Top Picks for the Best Wooden Bed Frames:Best Classic Wooden Bed Frame: Linda Wood Platform Bed Frame, $699 $629A Japandi-Inspired Bed Frame: The Bed by Thuma, $1,195The Budget Pick: Zinus Wen Wood Platform Bed Frame, $170For Modern Design Enthusiasts: West Elm Midcentury Bed, $1,299A Rustic Bed Frame: Pottery Barn Farmhouse Bed, $1,699Browse by Category:The Best Wooden Bed Frames, OverallZinus Linda Wood Platform Bed FrameSpecsFramework: Solid wood slats, headboard, and foundationZinus ethos is centered on accessibility and the belief that quality products can come at low price points (the brands metal platform bed frame is a great example of that). The wood Linda frames subtle Scandi vibes are particularly impressive to commerce director Rachel Fletcher. She says that the piece feels neutral and looks way more expensive than the sub-$350 price tag. Sturdy wooden slat support (no box spring required here!) with a built in metal interior frame makes the bed feel ultra secure, while the overall high quality exceeds her expectations. The style of the Linda is pretty agnosticits a little midcentury, a little Scandinavianso much so that I can imagine it fitting into a host of home decor aesthetics, from a cozy cabin to something more minimalist, or beach-y, or boho, she adds. The Bed by ThumaSpecsFramework: Repurposed wood frame, 100% polyester pebbled linen-weave upholstered headboard (optional), recycled plastics slatsIts easy to see why Thumas frame was one of the most popular items purchased by AD readers in both 2020 and 2021. Not only does it easily come together, but its an ideal purchase for anyone looking for a sturdy, long-lasting frame thats also easy to move with. Our senior digital design editor Zo Sessums was especially fond of the easy assembly process: The Japanese craftsman technique was true to the promise of having a quiet, easy-to-put-together setup. And with a nine-inch clearance space fit to store smaller items and shallow storage containers as well as an equally quick and tool-free disassembly, its no wonder Sessums still hasnt parted ways with this bestseller, even after a move from New York to Maine.Thuma even offers a classic underbed drawer set that can transform this platform bed into a storage bed. Will PorterZinus Wen Wood Platform Bed FrameSpecsFramework: Solid wood, steelFor a stylish wooden bed frame at an even more approachable price point, AD contributor Will Porter turned to this wallet-friendly Zinus foundation. When my partner and I were looking to buy a frame, we really just wanted something that looked nice, was affordable, and wouldnt fall apart quickly, he says. Porter is a fan of the cherry wood finish that he notes has a versatile and high-end look to complement bedroom decor. We actually thought it looked quite a bit like the Thuma bed, which we may get someday, but wasnt in the budget when we were shopping over a year ago, he adds. So, looks-wise, this was a big win, especially at just $170.West Elm Midcentury BedSpecsFramework: Kiln-dried solid and engineered wood and solid pine slatsAccording to contributor Madeleine Luckel, West Elms narrow midcentury frame is the perfect fit for a smaller, New York City-sized bedroom (in fact, its even followed her to every apartment shes lived in since 2014). Luckel particularly likes the frames clean and elegant lines and that the tone of the wood has a warm glow to it. Though buyers should be aware that the frames relatively low-profile design makes storing taller items more difficult. Some things that I would like to store underneath it (such as my standard-size Away suitcase) dont fit, she notes.Pottery Barn Farmhouse BedSpecsFramework: Kiln-dried solid wood and veneersContributor Nick Mafi describes Pottery Barns Farmhouse bed frame as sturdy but still soft. And aside from the aesthetic appeal that looks like something youd see in a country home and hassle-free white glove assembly service, Mafi appreciates the cozy-looking design (featuring both a headboard and footboard!). It had been screened for over 10,000 harmful chemicals and he felt it was ultimately worth the higher price tag. Like most pieces of furniture that are expensive, its built to last, he says. The design of the frame is important in that, even five or so years from now, it wont scream dated.More AD-Approved Wooden Bed FramesBirch Madison Natural Wood FrameSpecsFramework: FSC-certified wood (the components are made from Appalachian hardwood, southern yellow pine, and Appalachian maple)Available in two colors and on sale for just under $600 for a queen size (at the moment), this wood bed frame from Birch is a great option if youre looking for something simple but well-made. Sustainability and tool-free assembly are what drew Fletcher to this bed, which she says she would 100% recommend to a friend. Calling it utilitarian, streamlined, and super solid, Fletcher also notes that the assembly process was a breeze: The pieces fit together easily, the instructions were super clear, and I was kind of amazed as to how quickly it all came together.Casper Repose Bed FrameSpecsFramework: Sustainably sourced solid oak, plywood and oak veneer headboard, 100% polyester pillow headboardCaspers reputation for reliable, affordable mattresses extends to its budget-friendly bed frames, too. Sessums is impressed by the no-frills oak Repose frame. I chose the natural oak frame with the wood headboard, and I thought it was great! she says. Its very neutral and would fit in so many different bedroom spaces. I like the optional headboardI slept on the bed with and without it and found it to be lovely either way. It arrives in just a few days, and assembly is, shockingly, a breeze. (Sessums said it was fully set up within an hour.) It's sturdy and comfortable, and will blend right into any interior design aesthetic.West Elm Simple Bed FrameSpecsFramework: Solid and engineered wood with wooden slatsContributor Katie Henwoods search for a taller frame that maximized storage space and fit her minimal midcentury style eventually led her to West Elms solid wood platform bed. With easy set up and ample room to store under-bed storage bags filled with extra bedding, coats, shoes, and more, its clear why Henwood dubs this platform bed the Mary Poppins bag of bed frames. Most importantly, the wood frame allows Henwood to make the most of her limited square footage. Anyone looking to create more space in their small apartment, this is the bed frame for you, she says. Its not bulky like some bed frames that come with storage built in, and is simple enough to take with you wherever you go in the future. The Bed Frame by FloydSpecsFramework: TSCA Title VIcertified birch veneer and birch plywood, powder-coated steel supports, nylon ratchet strapsFloyds wood frame is a low-profile, adjustable bed frame with modular capabilities that makes it an ideal bed frame for a streamlined space, for constant moving, for a changing life, according to Sessums, whos been sleeping on it since 2019. Though setting it up was more tedious than expected, the Floyds adaptability eventually won Sessums over, proving the frame was worthy of its Instagram-established hype. I loved the idea that down the line I could transform the queen bed frame to instead fit a king-size or twin mattress sizes, or add a wooden headboard or storage drawer, she says.Scandinavian Minimalist Birch Platform Bed FrameFor people who love the look of Japanese-style platform beds but still want room for storage underneath, associate commerce director Lori Keong vouches for this bed she spotted on Etsy. It comes flatpacked with individual slats that slot into the base like puzzle pieces for an overall seamless construction. The fact that the slats fit into their own grooves also ensures a sturdy foundation that is virtually silent despite movement. The construction feels super high-quality, and its silhouette is unlike anything youll find at a big-box retailer otherwise, she says. I love the design and how many cavities of space it creates underneath the bed for stuffing any number of storage containers. How We Tested the Best Wooden Bed FramesWe at AD are passionate about all things sleep, so we put essentials for a good nights rest to the test in our own homesincluding the best bed frames. As we hinted at earlier in this story, our editors and contributors set this wood furniture up in their bedroomsnot a labto keep an eye out for ease of assembly, durability, style, and squeak-free construction. Our team slept on these bed frames for a minimum of a few weeks to get a real sense of their quality, though many of our editors have slept on them for at least couple years, so we can confidently stand behind these foundations.

  • Tour a Reimagined Hollywood Regencystyle House in Dallas
    www.architecturaldigest.com
When a historic house speaks, smart designers know to listen. So what exactly did architect Peter Pennoyer and interior designer Ashley Avrea Cathey hear from this century-old Hollywood Regency grand dame in Dallass tony Highland Park enclave? Tantalizingly whispered sweet somethings of restrained glamour and easy elegance, with gentle touches of whimsy and fantasy thrown in too. From these whispers, the duo developed an aesthetic narrativeone as much about soigne soirees as fun family dinnersthat would celebrate the houses past while simultaneously improving upon its design to help it best serve its present-day owners: a husband and wife who love to entertain both formally and more casually, and their three young children. This family knew that we love working on old houses, says Pennoyer, explaining what drew the preservation-minded homeowners to his Manhattan-based firm. We love making them the best they can be and also changing them, weaving our design eye through, but in a subtle way. Cathey echoes Pennoyers point of view on the need for a designer to have a light hand, also noting the leading role the homeowners can take. She says she never wants the work of her firm, Dallass Avrea and Company, to be overly apparent: Our mantra is always to be the best version of what our clients vision is.Pennoyer added gentle vaults to the sides of the entry gallerys plastered ceiling, which Cathey then had lacquered, commissioning glomis artist Miriam Ellner to decorate the glass panels of the central lantern. Its floral pattern recreates, in miniature, the print on the Fromental wallpaper seen in the stair hall behind. • Homemade Carpet Cleaner: 3 Recipes to Try
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Whether youre deep cleaning an area rug or all the carpet in your home, there are a few simple steps to follow.Step One: Vacuum the areaBefore using a DIY carpet cleaner, vacuum thoroughly. This will clear away dust and prevent debris from being worked further into the carpet. You may need to do it multiple times. Whatever the case, the carpet needs to be free of dust and other particles, says Rinea Blanchard, owner of Superior Contract Cleaning.Step Two: Do a spot testYou never know how your specific carpet fibers will react to a carpet cleaner you havent used before. Apply your DIY cleaner to a small, hidden area with a spray bottle, and check for colorfastness before applying it to your entire carpet.Step Three: Spot-clean tough stainsStubborn stains, such as pet urine and oils, benefit from concentrated treatment before you use your carpet cleaning machine. Pour your DIY carpet cleaning solution into a spray bottle and apply it to areas with visibly hard stains. Make sure not to overspray or soak the intended work area, and allow the solution several minutes to work. Blotdont scrub!the area with a fresh microfiber cloth until it dries. (A clean rag or paper towels also work.)Tough stains often require spot cleaning.Photo: Moussa81/Getty ImagesStep Four: Fill your machineLoad your carpet cleaners reservoir tank with your homemade carpet cleaner solution. For most machines, youll detach the tank and fill it about three quarters of the way full or until the solution reaches the level indicator. However, its best to follow the manufacturers instructions.Step Five: Clean the carpetClean your carpet according to the manufacturers instructions for your machine. Generally, youll pull the trigger to spray water onto the carpet while pushing the cleaner forward and back, focusing on one manageable area at a time. Release the trigger to suction up dirt and water with dry passes over the same area. Alternate wet and dry passes until no more water is pulled up as you work across the carpet. For heavily soiled areas, repeat the process for a deeper clean.Step Six: Air dryWait until the carpet dries completely. Also, tell guests and others who live in the home where carpets have been freshly cleaned so they can stay off of the area or walk extra carefully. How to store homemade carpet cleanerHomemade cleaners typically last about five to seven days when stored properly, according to Sheppard. Use an airtight glass or plastic container and keep it in a cool place. Label the container with the ingredients and the date for easy reference. Some mixtures, especially those containing peroxide, lose their effectiveness after 48 hours. Similarly, vinegar and dish soap solutions gradually weaken over time. To prevent waste, prepare only what you need for the task at hand. What cant be mixed to make a homemade carpet cleanerNever assume that just because ingredients are available over the counter, theyre safe to mix. Certain combinations can quickly turn your homemade carpet cleaning solution into a chemistry experiment gone wrong. Always avoid the following combinations:

  • Where Does Timothe Chalamet Live? Hint: Its Not His Native NYC
    www.architecturaldigest.com
He was born and raised in Manhattan, but where does Timothe Chalamet live now? For years, the star of A Complete Unknown held onto his New Yorker identity when he wasnt traveling for work, but he took the plunge and invested in a Beverly Hills home base about three years ago. The move conveniently brought him closer not only to Hollywood, but also to his current girlfriend of two years, the one and only Kylie Jenner.Read on for the details of the Dune actors digs.Childhood homeManhattan Plaza, the apartment building where Chalamet was raised. (Photo: Deb Cohn-Orbach/UCG/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)UCG/Getty ImagesChalamet grew up in Manhattan Plaza, a 46-floor complex in Manhattans Hells Kitchen neighborhood that has provided subsidized housing for middle-income families as part of New Yorks Mitchell-Lama Housing Program since its completion in 1977. In particular, Manhattan Plaza houses performing artists, which is why it also has the nickname Broadways Bedroom. Other famed tenants have included Colman Domingo, Alicia Keys, Angela Lansbury, Mickey Rourke, and Larry David (the real-life inspiration for Seinfelds Kramer resided next door). At one point, Samuel L. Jackson worked there as a security guard. The Wonka stars parents still reside in the structure, which Chalamet regularly visits when hes in NYC.I could draw the picture of an unconventional upbringing. I grew up in arts housing, Manhattan Plaza, which is a funky way to grow up, the actor said of the home in Rolling Stone last year. I could try to paint it negatively to you. I could try to paint it positively, but its a bit of everything. Its nuanced. Chalamet described some of his complicated feelings towards growing up in the arts residence during an interview with Anderson Cooper in February. This building truthfully made me scared of acting, he said, because its a tough lifestyle, and a lot of people arent doing fantastically.NYC rentalsAfter graduating high school in 2013, the Little Women actor bounced around rentals and hotels in the Big Apple. He studied for a year at Columbia, then retreated to an apartment near Yankee Stadium in the Bronx while trying to nab a role on his next big project after 2014s Interstellar. Then he moved to an apartment with two roommates in the East Village during a stint at NYU before dropping out of there, too, to focus on acting full time.In the summer of 2020, Chalamet secured a Manhattan apartment of his own for the first time. The French Dispatch star relished the mundanity of setting up his own place, according to an interview with GQ, but he needed a little help along the way. Zendaya helped me set up my first apartment in New York years ago, he said of his Dune costar in February 2024. The vibe was very teenage boy, Zendaya added. We just needed a few necessities. You know, cups and plates, knives and forks, things to clean. The Euphoria star brought Chalamet to Bed Bath & Beyond to help him hook up his bachelor pad with all the big boy stuff, she said.Beverly Hills homeChalamet eventually decided he wanted to spread his wings and fly a little further from home. After one too many days of doing the same thing, I just got this overwhelming sense that I was still playing the same hand of cards Id had for a long timebut that I had a better hand to play, he told GQ. I was living in this rental place that didnt feel like home. I was getting the same bacon, egg, and cheese at the same deli. Resisting any lifestyle change. Ready to take a new leap, the Oscar-nominated actor gave up his New York apartment and bought a house in Beverly Hills. I was able to spend 10 days in it before I went to Dune [2], and just having it as the home base, it psychologically helped.

  • Trumps White House Rose Garden Pave-Over Plans: Unpacking the Proposed Mar-a-LagoStyle Makeover
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Vice President Walter Mondale (left) and President Jimmy Carter talk in the shade of the White House Rose Garden in this 1978 photo.Photo: The White House via CNP/Getty ImagesPractically speaking, pavement is a common choice for a heavily trafficked outdoor area in a mid-Atlantic climate. We get heavy thunderstorms throughout the warm season and rain during the colder months, says Bell Design Inc president Robert J. Bell, a landscape architect based in Washington, DC. Bell also works extensively in Palm Beach, Florida, and has a good sense of what the goals and pitfalls are in terms of Trumps proposed changes to the garden. Anyone who has walked on spongy turf in formal shoes knows that queasy feeling you get when youre not sure if youre going to sink into a soft patch, Bell says. What is Mar-a-Lago Style? We dont know the extent to which Mar-a-Lagos design aesthetic will inform the Rose Garden renovations beyond what is referenced by the New York Times report, but according to Miami interior designer and founder of IV Atelier, Irena Viitiuk, Mar-a-Lagoinspired design doesnt necessarily mean directly replicating the private club and spas particular brand of extravagance. Instead, she says, the White House Rose Garden could selectively embrace sophisticated hardscaping techniques, maybe using limestone or bluestone, which is more elegant, carefully chosen landscaping, and subtle nods to historical motifs.Mar-a-Lago style can be thought of as a particular look typically found in high-end Florida estates and private golf clubs. Its a blend of Mediterranean revival with hints of Palm Beach, drenched in gold finishes, grand chandeliers, patterned floors, heavy drapery, and plenty of oversized everything, says Angie Kreller, an interior designer at Yabby. For her, the Mar-a-Lago aesthetic leans maximalist and embraces the theatrical, and while it has historical European influences, it is mashed together in a way that feels more about impact than restraint, she adds.A 2015 photo of the tiled patio at Mar-a-LagoPhoto: Mary Jordan/The Washington Post via Getty ImagesDid Trump redesign the White House Rose Garden in his first term?Melania Trump spearheaded a restoration of the White House Rose Garden with landscape architecture firm Oehme, van Sweden during Trumps first term. The renovations were controversial and drew backlash, leading to a petition that called for the changes to be reversed. As Paulus points out, the White House Rose Garden has undergone several renovations since it was originally created in 1903 by first lady Edith Roosevelt. The first major redesign was by well-known garden designer Rachel Bunny Mellon during the Kennedy administration, says Paulus, who adds that Mellons design included the large central grass panel.

  • How a German Fashion Photographer Designed Her 592-Square-Foot Apartment
    www.architecturaldigest.com
When that aforementioned relationship broke down, things had to move quickly. Here in Austria, there is a website called willhaben.at with apartment listings. Thats where I came across the ad for this place. The owners had renovated several apartments and I looked at all of them. This was actually the first one I viewed and as soon as I stepped through the door, I knew it would be mine. When choosing the floor-to-ceiling curtains from the Belgian brand Designs of the Time, Kaindl was advised by her friend and interiors expert Fridi Nefe. What was that feeling based on?The other two apartments were larger, and at the time I felt overwhelmed by the thought of all those empty rooms. I wanted something tranquil, something for myself, where I could create my own environment. And that felt possible with this apartment?Yes, very much. Its a 592-square-foot apartmenta size that was easy for me to manage on my own at the time. It had also just been renovated.Did you have a lot of furniture that you moved with you, or was Vienna a completely fresh start?Yes and no. I had taken most of the furniture with me, but I had to completely rebuild the kitchen. I already knew that I really wanted a stainless-steel one, so there wasnt too much to decide. However, I chose to have the walls painted for the first time in this apartmentits something Id never done before.Kaindl already owned the Twin sofa from Formela Berlin and the vintage marble table from Studio Boleh. The artwork above the sofa is by Thomas Schrenk. The stainless-steel table lamp from Max Sauze is a vintage piece from the 1970s.You bravely embraced the power of color!Funnily enough, for me, adding color on the walls was a way for me to embrace that Id be staying here for a whilethat Im not just passing through. I had a lot of support from my friend Fridi Nefe, who works in interior design here in Vienna. She came to me with her array of color options and that helped a lot with my decision. Now the wall in your kitchen is a bright yellow and your hallway is a powder pink.

  • Meet Julian Abele, the Black Architect Who Was a Cornerstone of Americas Gilded Age
    www.architecturaldigest.com
There are countless examples of Black ingenuity and cultural impact that have gone under-recognizedor intentionally obscuredas part of this countrys history, but Julian Francis Abele was a hidden figure somewhat by design. The African American architect from Philadelphia, who died in 1950 at age 68, was the first Black graduate from the University of Pennsylvanias architecture department and would ultimately become cohead of the renowned Horace Trumbauer firm. Known by many to be relatively shy, serious, and uninterested in the limelight, Abele used his impressive architectural gifts to carve a place in history, guaranteeing that, despite largely working in the shadows, his presence in the industry would forever be seen.He was more than content to do his work in the background, says Peter D. Cook, Abeles great grandnephew and design principal at HGA in Washington, DC. But knowing that he had an impact which still today can be felt and admired throughout a great city like Philadelphia gives me chills.Julian Abele.Courtesy of Duke UniversityDuring its peak reign during Americas Gilded Age, the Trumbauer firm was known for designing lavish residential manors for prominent business magnates and robber barons across the Eastern Seaboard. The firms storied portfolio also included public commissions like churches, hotels, libraries, and museums that were meant to inspire wonder and awe.At the turn of the 20th century, it was customary for architectural designs to be credited to the firm as a whole, so most designersincluding Abeledidnt initial the offices drawings. Though this lack of attribution means that Abeles fingerprints across the design process have had to be unearthed over time, it didnt correlate to a lack of respect for, or recognition of, his talent. From what I gather, he was paid a nice salary for the time, he was obviously a highly valued employee, Cook says. I have to give Trumbauer some credit as well, because he was a white man whoat the turn of the centuryentrusted a Black man to design his most prized commissions for the incredibly influential clients he had.Abele was responsible for the design of all of Trumbauers cut stone building commissions (as working with limestone was his specialty), and he was celebrated for his brilliant implementation of Beaux Arts in America, a French architectural style marked by a synthesis of neoclassical French, Renaissance, and Baroque elements, including sculptural ornamentation, arched windows, and grandiose entrances and staircases known as noble spaces. An indoor stadium at Duke University designed by Abele.Courtesy of Duke UniversityThe influence of Beaux Arts architectureAccording to Dreck Spurlock Wilson, ASLA, NOMA, and associate professor of architectural history at Howard University, Abele was always interested in 18th-century French architecturein fact, he identified as a Francophile. Abele reportedly attended the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art, which had a strong French influence on him, and by the time he began his studies at the University of Pennsylvania, it was one of the four or five schools of architecture in the US that was actually practicing and teaching the philosophy of Beaux Arts.Bill Whitaker, curator and collections manager of the Architectural Archives at the University of Pennsylvania, suggests that Abeles adoption of this style was equal parts problem-solving and innovation. [It was about] absorbing lessons of the past but also embracing the changing dynamics of the modern world, he explains. [Abele] was really an incredible expert with French Renaissance architecture; I think he loved the nuance of it and loved studying it. He was immediately recognized as a talent. During his sophomore year, Abele joined the architecture society; by his senior year, his classmates had elected him as president.Once Abele was a professional architect, he would go on to design Eisenlohr Hall, which functions as the on-campus home of UPenns president. Whitaker claims that credit for this design was only discovered in recent years, when a rare instance of his initials was found on a set of drawings for the structure. You can see him establishing himself within the firm, and his skills are clear, he says. Its his hand that is developing the critical elements on the faade of buildings. The Cook-Abele House in Spokane, Washington, as photographed in 1959.Courtesy of the Washington State Digital ArchivesAfter Abele graduated from UPenn in 1902 (and before he joined Trumbauers firm as the assistant to a chief designer in 1906), he traveled west to Spokane, Washington, to visit his older sister Elizabeth Abele Cook and her family. During this trip, he designed their home, which was formally recognized as a historic property by Spokanes Landmark Commission in a unanimous vote last year. Its maybe his first attribution for a significant structure, and the only one west of the Mississippi, says Logan Camporeale, historic preservation specialist for the city and county of Spokanes historic preservation office. It has had a lot of changes [since] and sometimes historic preservationists may not be interested in a building like this because it has changed so much, but the story is so important. The home, which was completed in 1905, still has vestiges of the French eclectic style Abele drew up. Its really not typical in Spokane, there are only a handful of other examples which came at least a decade later, Camporeale notes of the aesthetic, adding that he was ahead of the curve and really interested in Beaux Arts, so it makes sense he was experimenting with [another] French style [early in his career].Wilson shares that when Abele returned to Philadelphia and began working for the offices of Trumbauer, there were only about four Negro architects who were licensed and practicing. The architect ascended fairly quickly, becoming chief designer in 1909. Even still, on his application to the American Institute of Architects, where he gained admission in 1942, he only lists the Cook-Abele House in Spokane and a project he worked on after Trumbauers death in 1938 (when he became cohead of the firm with William O. Frank) as his past work experience. So he himself did not want to take specific credit for jobs within the Trumbauer office, Whitaker notes.Philadelphia Museum Of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 27, 2016.Photo by Raymond Boyd/Getty ImagesThe beautification of PhiladelphiaAbeles work aligned neatly with the City Beautiful Movement that gained prominence at the turn of the 20th century. (This architecture and urban planning philosophy proposed that beautification efforts in major American citiesin the form of grandiose buildings, striking sculptures, and morewould not only promote aesthetic delight, but would improve quality of life and civic virtue among citizens.) This approach to progressive social reform was a leading concern of the upper class, which the Trumbauer firm was decidedly cozy with, so its no surprise that their clients were also major patrons of the projects borne of this movement; they were commissioned to design the Philadelphia Museum of Art and central library branch.Abeles love of the classical Beaux Arts style, which he became more deeply acquainted with during a Trumbauer-sponsored trip across Europe, was a perfect fit for this agenda, and the architects work on civic commissions made strides in elevating Philadelphias profile as an American city equal to Paris or other European cities. As chief designer at the firm, Abele presented his hand-drawn designs to the art commission for review, so his Black identity was certainly no secret to collaborators, peers, and stakeholders. The monumentality of the museum is wonderful, people dont build buildings like this anymore, says David Barquist, H. Richard Dietrich Jr., curator of American Decorative Arts at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It creates a sense of drama when you walk in the door that sets you up for the fact that youre in a special place about to have a special experience. The Parkway Central Library, based on the 18th century Htel de la Marine building on the Place de la Concorde in Paris, is very much of the same style. When the building opened in 1927 it was state of the art, not only in terms of the mechanics of the building and retrieval systems for materials in the book stacks, but also in terms of services for childrenthe department had its own entrance which gave children the autonomy to [come here] independently and browse collections, says Marija Gudauskas, head supervisor of Parkway Central Librarys Map Collection and Print and Picture Collection. His work was trying to rejuvenate the past and meet it with the present. He wanted to connect people with history.Doorway to the Duke University Chapel in Durham, North Carolina.Photo by Carol M. Highsmith/Buyenlarge/Getty ImagesKing of the college campusBeyond civic commissions, Abeles designs also decorated university campuses outside the city of Philadelphia: His student-competition-winning design for a Beaux Arts pedestrian gateway was built on the campus of Haverford College in 1901; his design for Harvard Universitys Widener Library was erected in 1915; and, as part of the Trumbauer firms commission to redesign Duke Universitys east campus and the west campus anew in the 1920s, Abeles work can be seen across some 40 buildings, including the chapel, indoor stadium, main administration building, and all of the structures on the main quad.Valerie Gillispie, university archivist at Dukes Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library, cites the chapel as the centerpiece because of its location and magnificence. Duke is unusual because the east campus has some older buildings that were remade into a Georgian-style campus, and then on the west campus the design is neo-Gothic, she explains as a stylistic departure from Abeles earlier work. This Gothic Wonderland, as todays students affectionately call it, was likely inspired by the former Duke presidents appreciation for the way Princeton University and Chicago looked, and its aesthetically a stronger fit for the regional Southern context than it would have been in the Northeast.Today, Dukes main quad is named for Abele, and his portrait hangs regally in the reading room of the campus library. But at the time he was designing the school, its unclear how much time he actually spent in Durham and North Carolina, according to Gillispie. While administrators certainly were aware of his Black identity, she notes that Abele was a very proud man and did not like putting himself in the position to be treated as a second-class citizen, so what we are pretty sure of is that he didnt come down to campus and North Carolina very much, because he wouldnt have been accommodated in the way Trumbauer was.In keeping with the blueprint his ancestor laid, Cook says he has always sought out working on projects where there was an opportunity to uplift and inspire places that really contribute to the betterment of our built environment in his own career. Cook, who was one of the three lead designers for the National Museum of African-American History and Culture, counts sensitive, small landscape interventions, like a memorial and restoration of a burial ground of enslaved persons at Thomas Jeffersons Monticello, as projects that are influenced by Abeles commitment to important civic structures.Years ago, my grandfather [Julian Abele Cook Sr.] said to me: When you go to see a doctor you go because youve got some pain, and when you go to see a lawyer you may also have some issues youre wrestling with, Cook shares. But when you go to see an architect, you go with a dream. Thats why I got into architecture, and thats why my grandfather did, and he probably learned that at the feet of Julian Abele, who had such an illustrious career.

  • Meet Marion Mahony, Frank Lloyd Wrights Earliest Design Collaborator
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Its nearly impossible to separate Marion Mahonys story from that of her husband, Walter Burley Griffin, and her earliest collaborator and one-time friend, Frank Lloyd Wright. But it wasnt the shy architect she married or the boisterous one she once worked for that defined her, but rather the work she did alongside them at a time when women were actively dissuaded from entering such spaces. She was really an anomaly for her time, says Alice Friedman, an architectural and design historian, professor at Wellesley, and author of the forthcoming book Queer Moderns: Max Ewing's Jazz Age New York.Mahony, sometimes referred to by her married name, Mahony Griffin, was a trailblazing architect, mesmerizing artist, and progressive urban planner. Her career began in Wrights Oak Park studio in the late 19th century and would take her as far as India and Australia, where she worked with her husband throughout the 20s and 30s. But for much of history, she was seen, at best, as a supporting player in the lives of the two men she worked with or, at worst, wholly forgotten.I think people are much more comfortable telling a story in which theres a single hero, Friedman adds. That narrative is certainly true for Wright, and its one he participates in. But like the editors and publicists behind a book, or the technical designers and seamstresses behind a fashion collection, it takes a collective to bring a novel or a spring line to life. A building is no different, and in Wrights early career, perhaps no one had such an impact on his work as Mahony. The early years: A childhood defined by freethinking women and unspoiled natureMahony was born in Chicago in 1871, the second of five children to Clara Hamilton (ne Perkins) and Jeremiah Mahony. Just six months after her birth, the Great Chicago Fire would force the family to move out of the city center to Lakeside, a suburb now known as Hubbard Woods, where Mahoney spent her formative years. Described as a shy girl with tomboyish ways and a rebellious spirit, she came of age exploring unspoiled prairie land, marshes, and the lake shore. Following her fathers death in 1882, she was largely raised by three women: her mother, aunt, and grandmother.Mahony was born a few months before the Great Chicago Fire, which would force her family to move out of the city center.Photo: Getty Images[They] instilled upon her this belief that she could do anything she wanted when she grew up, which was pretty unusual at that time, explains Debora Wood, a print and drawing curator and editor of Marion Mahony Griffin: Drawing the Form of Life. As the primary breadwinner, Mahonys mother became a principal at a prominent Chicago school and surrounded herself with activists, reformers, and suffragists, including Mary Hawes Wilmarth, a peace activist and Hull House trustee, and Ella Flagg Young, an education reformer. By this time, the family had moved back to Chicago, offering Mahony unparalleled access to a phoenix city, one rebuilt from ashes in a new, streamlined style born from a group of architects that came to be known as the Chicago School. She was particularly inspired by Louis Sullivan, who played a large role in reshaping her hometown. Its not hard to find similarities between Mahonys upbringing in Illinois and Wrights in Wisconsin. They had the same family structure (matriarchal), the same religious community (Unitarian), the same classroom (the midwest landscape). Wright even worked in Sullivans office between 1888 and 1893, declaring his early mentor one of only three influences he admitted to during his life. Raised in the same world of ideas, its likely the pair shared something of a common language when they met in 1895.Mahonys cousin, Dwight Perkins, had pursued a degree in architecture, and she very much wanted to follow in the same footsteps, Wood explains. When she graduated from high school, she applied to MIT and passed the entrance exams into their architecture program.Today, graduating from MIT would be an impressive feat, one proud parents might tell their friends around the dinner table. But for Mahony in 1894, it was nothing short of a Herculean effort. Not welcome in the field is probably too gentle of a way to put, Friedman says. At that time, there was a great deal of effort to actively discourage women from entering the profession. It makes it all the more satisfying that it was her female community that ensured she succeeded. In fact, it was the Wilmarths who financially supported Mahonys education.Soon after graduating from the prestigious program, only the second woman to have done so, she moved back to her hometown, where Perkins had a burgeoning architectural practice. In 1894, Mahony began working for her cousin as a draftsman.Life at Steinway Hall, where radical ideas about architecture shaped a new American styleRising 11 stories, Steinway Halls immediate verticalitycreated most notably through three columns of symmetrical windowsshould be the first clue that the building is not a Prairie school design. Indeed, one of the most defining characteristics of Prairie architecture is its emphasis on the horizontal.Steinway Hall, now demolished, was 11 stories tall and located in downtown Chicago. However, the Italian renaissance building is among the most important in the history of the Prairie school, for its largely where the distinctly American style was born. Commissioned by the New Temple Music Building Company, the lower floor is to be occupied by the music firm and the upper floors contain more than 100 offices, reads an 1895 article in the Chicago Eagle about the new construction. It was in these upper levels where a group of young architects worked, all full of grandiose ideas about a new American architecture. Perkins, who had designed the building, had an office there, as did Robert Spencer, Lawrence Buck, Myron Hunt, and, of course, Frank Lloyd Wright. Its here that Mahony and Wright began their professional relationship, introduced to each other through Perkins. He too was a very new, young, avant-garde architect and had no problem hiring a woman to work in his office, Wood says. I think there was a lot of admiration between the two of them. Wright could see her talent, and his philosophies about nature and architecture matched her own.Mahony worked on buildings, windows, furniture, and more at Wrights firm, and if modern titles were to be applied, historians agree that she likely would have been the chief designer. Later, in 1898, she became the first licensed female architect in Illinois. According to accounts by the other architects, she could stand up to Wright and engage in a very fluid and dynamic conversation. They said the days that both Marion and Wright were in the office were really entertaining, Wood adds. But its this kind of lively discussion that often extended beyond just one firm. Its clear that Steinway Hall was a center of intellectual activity, explains Stuart Cohen, an architect and author of Frank L. Wright and the Architects of Steinway Hall. It could be seen as an extension of the Chicago Architectural Club, and it was definitely a boys club.A group of young designers including Perkins, Hunt, and Wright would meet regularly to discuss the history and future of architecture and the arts. They called themselves the 18 (presumably for 18 members) and, according to PBS, were guided by Sullivans belief that designs should be free from historical precedents. Much of these conversations were the root of what would develop into the Prairie style. People were in and out of each others offices, and everybody took an interest in and knew what projects everybody else was working on, Cohen says. And I suspect that there was quite a lot of direct and indirect collaboration. As Cohen explains, most of the architects who worked out of Steinway Hall didnt leave many records about what exactly happened within the downtown building. With the absence of written descriptions of who did what, part of what inspired me to work on this book was comparing the projects that came out of Steinway to get an idea of what the idea sharing might have been like, he says. In doing so, he was able to piece together a number of instances that showcase a spirit of collaboration among all the architects. The Hunt House in LaGrange, IllinoisPhoto: Barry Driggs/Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust/Getty ImagesTechnically, all projects from Wrights firm are credited to him. Some of the other architects working in the office at the time said that they would even be reprimanded if they tried to say something was someone elses design, Wood explains. But given the trails that historians have been able to follow, its clear that the collaborative energy that spread more broadly throughout Steinway Hall likely influenced individual offices too. In Wrights Hunt House, there is a continuous window box with plantings that drip and soften the edge of balcony railing, Cohen says. I suspect, as do a lot of people, that it was Marion behind that.Friedman theorizes that Mahony may have played a large role in attracting and working with clients, specifically progressive female ones. She wrote about this in a chapter of the 2011 book Marion Mahony Rediscovered, edited by David Van Zanten. These female clients were my interest, people like Susan Lawrence Dana and Queene Coonley, Friedman says. I think they might have felt that she was a kindred spirit. Many of these women were interested in finding new ways to use domestic space. Dana for example, wanted not just a house, but a school, a childrens library, and community theater as part of the home. Its something that likely attracted her to Wrightafter Steinway Hall, he built a studio as part of his home in Oak Park, a rarity for the timebut also Mahony. Indeed, her thesis at MIT was titled The House and Studios of a Painter and explored a similar home-work typology. There are notations in the office histories about her going to Springfield [to the Dana House site] as the representative of the studio, Friedman says. The Dana-Thomas House in Springfield, IllinoisPhoto: Dietmar Rauscher/Getty IMagesIn the Dana House (known as the Dana-Thomas House), there is a fountain by Richard Boch that serves to separate the domestic areas from the community space. There is evidence that Marion collaborated with Boch on the fountain, Friedman adds. There is evidence that she worked on the light fixtures in the home. Together, it creates the image of not just a staff member supervising construction and reporting back, but a very active participant in the homes design and presentation.I dont have proof of this, but I can just imagine these two women having conversations about education reform, womens rights, the arts, and civic dutyall things both Dana and Mahony were interested in, Friedman adds. I wouldve loved to have been a fly on the wall.Branding the Prairie style with a sharp artistic eyeWhere Mahonys impact is not debated was in the artistry of her architectural drawings and renderings. Her graphic style was the first to include perspective, plan, and section on a single paper, and was immeasurably influential in the construction and commission of projects. In 1905, she created a watercolor for Wright for the Unity Temple, which had burned down. The congregation asked Wright for proposals, and her art helped sell the project, Wood says.Until 1909, she made several renderings for Wright, some of which depicted unbuilt projects and some finished ones. A very common characteristic of her work is a flattening of spaces and forms, explains Wood. She is particularly celebrated for her use of line and the application of nature to frame the structures. Additionally, there is clear inspiration from Japanese prints, which both she and Wright admired.I couldnt believe how gorgeous the drawings on silk were, they were like precious objects, Friedman remembers of her time studying Mahonys prints while working on Marion Mahony Rediscovered.A rendering of the K.C. DeRhodes House is often seen as the pinnacle of her work with Wright. A sparrow in the bottom left corner of the drawing is of particular note, which Wood says was likely inspired by the Japanese prints in Wrights collection. Many of them depict birds, tree branches, and flowers, and Ive looked through hundreds of the prints from his collection and have not found one that is an exact replica of that bird. This drawing in particular is so beautiful because she is clearly influenced by these Japanese prints, but she makes the bird and flower subject completely her own, Wood says.Hidden among the leaves on the lower left corner is also Mahonys monogram, MLM. The fact that it has any signature or monogram is pretty radical, Wood adds. Shes taking credit for her contributions, and thats big for the time. Mahonys work not only helped Wright gain commissions, but it more broadly publicized the aesthetics of the Prairie style. She illustrated approximately half of Wrights Wasmuth portfolio, which was published in 1911, and helped establish him as an international architectural superstar.A betrayal fractures the relationship for goodWright and Mahonys relationship expanded beyond the professional. The pair could be seen as friends, and Mahony was particularly close with Wrights first wife, Catherine. In an 1895 photo credited to Wright, Mahony and Catherine are captured together in an informal pose, suggesting a notable familiarity between the two. So when Wright fled to Europe in 1909 and left Catherine for Mamah Borthwick Cheney, a client and neighbor, it undoubtedly fractured his relationship with Mahony as well.Marion Mahony and Catherine Wright pose for a photo in the late 19th century.Photo: Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust/Getty ImagesWhile he was in Europe, Wright asked Mahony to take over the studio, but she declined. Another member of the practice, Hermann V. von Holst, ultimately managed commissions, who then once again approached Mahony for her help. This time, she agreed on a definite arrangement that I should have control of the designing, Mahony wrote in her memoir, The Magic of America. That suited himfor that period, I had great fun designing.During this time, she completed a number of Wrights commissions, including the Amberg House in Grand Rapids, Michigan; the Robert Mueller House in Decatur, Illinois; and the Adolph Mueller House also in Decatur. But her relationship remained strained with Wright. When the absent architect didnt bother to answer anything that was sent over to him, the relations were broken, she wrote in her memoir. Ironically, Wright spent much of his time in Europe working on the Wasmuth portfolio.Feeling betrayed, Mahony turned her attention towards championing a new architectural voice, a man who she had met in Wrights office and would later marry, Walter Burley Griffin. She convinced him to submit a proposal in 1911 to an international competition to design Canberra, the new capital of Australia. She illustrated the project in incredible detail, especially for a person who had never been to the country before. A big reason I believe that they won that competition was Marion Mahonys paintings, Cohen adds. In 1914, the couple relocated to Australia and together had a prosperous career. My wife is the genius, I am only the businessman, Burley said about Mahony and Canberra in 1913. When Wright came back from Europe in 1911, he was able to reinvent himself, rethink his practice, and create some of the most important architecture of the 20th century.Frank Lloyd Wrights Oak Park Home and Studio included both a residential and professional wing.littlenyNow working on different sides of the world, Mahonys and Wrights later years resemble something like Newtons Third Law: equal and opposite. Mahony and Griffin pioneered the knitlock construction method in Australia, which is constructed from interlocking concrete vertebrae. Wright fashioned his textile block system, which uses concrete blocks reinforced by steel rods. Mahony and Griffin designed and developed Castlecrag, a suburb of Sydney that emphasizes living with nature and strong community involvement. Though it was never built, Wright never stopped thinking about Broadacre City, his vision for a decentralized, democratic community embedded in nature. Both parties celebrated the arts outside of architecture: Mahoney designed an outdoor theater at Castlecrag and regularly directed and produced plays; Wright designed a theater at Taliesin and would often host public performances and movies. The pair harbored resentment towards each other for much of the rest of their lives. Though she never called him by name in her memoir, she refers to a cancer sore among the Prairie group architects who originated very little but spent most of his time claiming everything and swiping everything. Wright, for his part, called Mahony and Griffin imitators, dismissing their talents. But perhaps both parties inability to move past apathy shows a lingering, grudging respect. After all, they were each a foundation in the others lives. There are studies of the studio culture at Oak Park that indicate that Marion was the person who challenged Wright about his ideas, who had intellectual conversations with him about architecture, Cohen says. She played a really key role in his development, and consequently, the development of the Prairie school.
