WWW.CNET.COMBest Riding Mowers for 2024Our Picks View details $3,599 at Home Depot View details View details $2,899 at The Home Depot View details View details $2,099 at The Home Depot View details View details $5,499 at Ace Hardware View details Table of Contents Getting your mower ready and pushing it across the lawn can feel like a chore. With the right riding mower, youll save time and effort -- especially for larger yards. However, trying to find which one is right for you can be overwhelming. To help you make the choice, we've compared the specs and found the best mowers for different yard needs and budgets. When choosing a riding mower, consider your lawn size. For instance, a .05-acre yard may only need a push mower, which is far cheaper than even the most affordable riding mower. Plus, not all lawns are created equal. You may need to take steep inclines or other rugged terrain into consideration when making this decision.Read more: 36 Unique Gifts for People Who Have EverythingRecent advances in battery technology now offer the option of electric versus traditional gas motors. There's a lot to consider here. If you run out of gas while mowing, you can refill in minutes and continue. With an electric mower, however, you might face a one- to two-hour delay while recharging. Thats why sizing your machine to your lawn is especially important when considering electric options. On the other hand, some electric models are compatible with battery platforms, allowing you to use the mowers batteries in other tools. If you have extra charged batteries from those tools, you can swap them into the mower to avoid the downtime of recharging. There'll still be an offset on pricing, however. There's a hefty upfront investment in batteries that may be tough to recoup.Important note: Unlike most of CNETs best lists, this one is based on research rather than hands-on testing, as the size and cost of these units made obtaining samples difficult. I've compared all the specs to find the best riding lawn mowers on the market so that you can make an informed decision about which one could be right for you. $3,599 at Home Depot $3,599 at Home Depot The Cub Cadet Ultima ZT1 50-inch riding mower is a great choice for homeowners with large lawns. It has a powerful 23-horsepower engine and a 50-inch cutting deck, making it easy to mow even the largest lawns quickly and efficiently. The mower also features a hydrostatic transmission, which makes it easy to maneuver around tight spaces. This also allows for a speedy 7 mph forward speed and 3.5 mph in reverse. In addition, the Ultima ZT1 comes with a variety of features (some at an extra cost) that make it a great choice for homeowners who want the best possible lawn care experience. These features include a mulching deck, a bagger, side discharge chute, tow/haul capability, snow plow or even a sun shade. The fabricated mulching deck delivers a signature cut with fewer clumps and stragglers, finer clippings, increased evenness and improved soil health, while the bagger and side discharge chute make it easy to collect grass clippings. Overall, the Cub Cadet Ultima ZT1 50-inch riding mower is a great choice for homeowners who want a powerful, easy-to-use and feature-rich riding lawn mower. Photo Gallery 1/1 $2,899 at The Home Depot Best gas-powered riding lawn mower John Deere S130 $2,899 at The Home Depot Some people prefer the traditional steering experience of the round wheel mounted on the steering column, and my pick for best gas riding mower is a John Deere lawn tractor that offers just that. The S130 sports a 42-inch cutting deck and a 22-hp engine that will get you up to 5.5 mph forward or 3.2 mph in reverse. Much like my pick for best zero turn, the S130 offers many add-ons including a snow plow, snow blower, tire chains and even a full cab enclosure for extra protection from the elements. The S130 includes the John Deere "Easy Change" 30-second oil change system, a proprietary all-in-one oil and oil filter canister that allows you to quickly change its tractor oil with "no hassles and no mess." The list price of $2,899 is attractive for a name-brand unit with these specs. Throw in a seasonal discount you can likely dig up somewhere, and the S130 becomes a great choice for nearly anyone considering a riding mower. Photo Gallery 1/1 $2,099 at The Home Depot Best riding lawn mower value Troy-Bilt Bronco 42 $2,099 at The Home Depot My pick for best value riding mower falls into a categorization of riding mowers that are designed for lawns of 2 acres or smaller. You still have access to plenty of power with a 19-hp Briggs & Stratton engine and a 42-inch cutting deck. The Bronco 42 is designed to provide easy on-and-off accessibility with a "Step-Thru" frame design that makes it a great pick for people at all physical capability levels. The automatic transmission and foot pedal control are also designed to allow the mower to drive "like a car."You will still have access to all the add-ons and pull-behind carts, spreaders and sprayers with the attached rear hitch. When you look at these specs and performance options at a list price of $2,199, which is near entry-level pricing for name-brand riding mowers (entry-level being around $2,000), the Bronco 42 becomes an easy choice for best value. Photo Gallery 1/1 $5,499 at Ace Hardware Best electric riding lawn mower Ego Power Plus Z6 42-inch $5,499 at Ace Hardware Choosing the titleholder for the best electric riding mower is a bit trickier, given the wide variance in how these batteries and electrical systems perform. The Z6 42-inch does work on a removable battery platform where you can use the individual batteries from the mower (up to six of them) in the company's lineup of other outdoor tools. Included with the mower are four of the 10-Ah batteries (Ego currently offers batteries with amp-hour capacities of 2.5, 4, 5, 6, 7.5, 10 and 12) and two additional spaces for you to add additional batteries of your own. To start the mower, you will need a minimum of 15-Ah batteries loaded, with full capacity being 60 Ah, which Ego says will get you up to 3 acres. There are three driving modes: Control, Standard and Sport, which give you different degrees of aggressiveness and speed during maneuvering. Your speeds while cutting will range from 3-7 mph with an overall top speed of 8 mph during travel mode. Included is a wall-mounted fast charger similar to a standard EV charger so you don't have to charge each battery individually. This is also handy if you're invested in the Ego ecosystem and prefer to charge multiple batteries simultaneously. You'll also get some nifty extras like an LCD control screen and a USB port to charge or power things on the go. The Z6 42-inch model is a great choice if you're already invested in this outdoor tool platform or interested in one. It's also great if you're generally an electric/EV/battery power enthusiast. Generally, the performance you'll see will rival that of similarly sized 22-hp gas engine models. The price tag might be a little higher due to battery buy-in, but overall this is a great machine with exceptional performance. Photo Gallery 1/1 Other units we evaluated Ryobi 48-volt, 100-Ah Electric Zero Turn Riding Mower: Ryobi has a few nice options for electric riding mowers, including this 100-Ah version that has the largest battery capacity of all our evaluated units. Looking at the math converting both the Ryobi and Ego units to watt-hours by multiplying their battery voltage by battery amp-hours, Ryobi has 4,800Wh versus Ego's 3,360Wh. At these stated capacities, both manufacturers claim their mowers cover "up to" 3 acres, which makes the Ego system appear to be more efficient.Greenworks 60-volt, 42-inch CrossoverT Electric Riding Lawn Mower: This mower is the least expensive of the electric options I evaluated. I do like the integrated storage bed in the back of the unit. It comes with six 8-Ah batteries and there is an extensive outdoor tool collection to interact with these batteries just like the Ego platform. For recharging, you will need to use the three included double-battery chargers to bring your six batteries back online. It can cover up to 2.5 acres per charge.Craftsman T110 42-inch 17.5-hp Riding Lawn Mower: This gas-powered mower boasts similar specs to some of our other units, albeit with a slightly smaller 17.5-hp engine. A decent choice overall, especially if you're already a Craftsman fan, but a slightly higher price tag per spec keeps this one out of the winner's circle. Show more Riding mower FAQs How much does a riding lawn mower cost? Riding mowers vary greatly in cost. Entry-level costs for most known brands is around $2,000 and can exceed $25,000 for larger multifunction lawn tractors designed for very large lawn areas. An average lawn mower costs in the $3,000-$3,500 range. Show more What size lawn should I have before considering a riding mower? This answer will vary a bit based on the individual, but in general, anything over half an acre is a great candidate for a riding mower. You still might consider a riding mower for smaller lawns especially if you have concerns about your physical ability or stamina to push mow whatever size yard you have. Even in those circumstances, there are self-propelled push mowers that take the majority of the work out of the task. Show more Which is better, a traditional riding mower or a zero-turn mower? Both mowers have their advantages. Up front, one of the main differences will be cost. Zero-turn mowers will usually cost at least 25% more (usually closer to 50% more) than their traditional counterparts. Zero-turns will mow your space faster and with greater maneuverability than the traditional riding mower. Smaller residential yards are easy candidates for traditional mowers while larger yards or people who mow multiple yards (like landscape companies) might opt for zero-turns to increase their time efficiency. WWW.CNET.COMHow to Keep Your Salad Greens From Liquifying in the FridgeA bag of wilted greens is a familiar sight in my fridge. While it does provide a biological excuse not to eat my greens and chow down on some fried chicken or pizza instead, it's ultimately a waste of money and does nothing for my overall health goals. But what if you could keep those expensive salad greens from going bad in what feels like hours? To learn more about food freshness, I tapped the expertise ofManzExecutive Chef Pedro Cajas for the best salad greens and produce storage tips to take back to the US. Here are Cajas' expert tips for keeping greens, yellows and reds from turning brown.1. Store greens at the right temp Food storage containers add an extra layer of protection for certain produce. vgajic/Getty Images"Ideally, the temperature to store greens is between 36 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit" to prolong freshness," recommends Cajas. Anything cooler or warmer and you'll run the risk of greens wilting or freezing.2. Dry greens completely before storing Make sure greens and herbs are washed and completely dry if you plan to store them in the fridge. Halfpoint/Getty ImagesIf you wash your greens or they have residual moisture, be sure to thoroughly dry your produce before they are stored. "Proper drying prevents excess moisture, which can cause wilting, and helps keep your ingredients crisp for longer," said Cajas.3. Separate fruits from veggiesFruits such as apples and peaches emit ethylene gas, which can cause the greens that surround them to break down more quickly. Keep fruits and veggies separate either in different drawers or produce bags within the drawers.4. Minimize knife contact Don't prechop produce before storing it in the fridge. MisenIf you can, don't prechop your salads or buy oversized bags of lettuce. "Cutting can accelerate their decomposition," reveals Cajas, who also advises home cooks to handle greens with care during meal preparation. Once something is sliced, diced, chopped or even massaged, it releases its moisture and immediately speeds up the process of wilting.Read more:You Have Too Many Kitchen Knives. Here Are the 4 You Need.5. Utilize the crisperThis drawer retains the most humidity in your fridge, which maintains moisture while preventing salad leaves and other vegetables from completely drying out.Climate is everything Tomatoes don't always need to be stored in a refrigerator but a warmer local climate may cause them to spoil faster. James Martin/CNET Upgrade your inbox Get cnet insider From talking fridges to iPhones, our experts are here to help make the world a little less complicated. Many fruits and vegetables can survive outside of a refrigerator, local climate should ultimately dictate the decision to forego modern technology. "In our restaurant, all the ingredients we use for salads require refrigeration due to the high temperatures in the area."This is especially true in Santa Teresa, where the intense heat affects the freshness of the vegetables," explains Cajas. "In other areas, such as San Jos, some items, like cherry tomatoes, could be kept without refrigeration, but in our case, all our ingredients are refrigerated."Curious to know which foods can stand up to their natural environments? Check out our complete guide on foods that don't need to be kept in the refrigerator.Fresh is best The less time your produce spent traveling from farm to fridge, the longer it should stay edible after purchase. bhofack2/Getty ImagesThe less time traveling from farm to plate, the longer the lifespan. Consider shopping for produce at farmer's markets where notoriously fragile and flimsy ingredients such as herbs and salad greens may have been harvested as early as that morning."Costa Rica, with its tropical climate and variety of microclimates, allows for the availability of fresh produce nearly year-round," shares Cajas. "We respect closed seasons to ensure the growth and reproduction of species, which our customers greatly appreciate. Although some products have a specific season, such as Costa Rican guava and pitaya, we generally have access to a wide range of fresh ingredients thanks to the country's natural conditions. This abundance enriches our menu offerings and allows our guests to always enjoy fresh, authentic flavors," he adds.Greens that don't turn to mush now that's pura vida.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 37 Visualizações

They are 2-8 and in last place in the division after reaching the playoffs last season. WWW.CNET.COMBest Workout Mirrors for 2024Our Picks View details $2,495 at Formelife View details Table of Contents If you're looking for fitness solutions that don't take up much space, a smart fitness mirror is the way to go. These compact mirrors offer a huge selection of workout options. Sure, you can stick to the classics and deck out your at-home gym with a treadmill, elliptical or exercise bike, but a fitness mirror can make strength training, live personal training sessions, HIIT classes, dance cardio and more accessible for less. Plus, you can recreate the feel of in-person classes in your own home. Fitness mirrors also make for great holiday season gifts if you've got a fitness buff in your family. Some workout mirrors offer unique features such as rep counting, form correction and even access to apersonal trainer. They aren't cheap, though, so it's helpful to know what each one can offer you that a gym can't. We tested various popular smart mirrors at home and in CNET's testing lab to determine which are the best. We've factored in the installation process, classes and unique functions, as well as practicality. Check out our top picks for smart workout mirror options below.Editor's note: Lululemon stopped selling its smart mirror following a new partnership with Peloton. For more, read this story.Which is the best overall workout mirror? We determined there wasn't a best overall workout mirror since each one offers unique features that can't be compared against each other. Instead, we looked at what made them stand out and considered who'd appreciate these styles the most. Some people prefer a more customized workout so personal training is more up their alley, whereas others want the boutique fitness class to feel at home.Best smart mirrors of 2024 Pros Blends into any room Easy installation App is easy to use Screen display is high quality Perks offered at partner fitness studios and discounts at Lululemon Cons No touchscreen Lululemon studio membership is a separate cost Personal training costs extra Only connects to one third-party music app, Apple Music Doesn't come with exercise equipment See at Editor's note: You can no longer buy the Studio Mirror; the description below was written before the company discontinued the product. If you already bought a Studio Mirror, however, you now haveaccess to Peloton classes with your Lululemon subscription. You can read more on Lululemon's FAQ page. The Lululemon Studio Mirror connects you to your favorite boutique fitness classes by creating a hybrid experience at home and in person. When you order this smart mirror you have the option to have it installed by a delivery technician, or you can install it following their installation instructions. You can have your mirror on a stand that leans against the wall or mount it to your wall. The Lululemon Studio Mirror can only be controlled through its app. The app is easy to set up, but you will need to make sure the device is connected to Wi-Fi and your smartphone's Bluetooth is on so you can pair it.For a smart mirror, I expected it to be a touch screen, so I was disappointed I had to operate it through my phone. The good news is the app (available for iOS and Android) is well-designed, intuitive and easy to follow. You will need a Lululemon Studio membership to access the classes (which include beginner, intermediate or advanced levels). Keep in mind you will need equipment at home like dumbbells, resistance bands or kettlebells, depending on the class you take. You'll never be bored because Lululemon drops new classes every week. Lululemon studio also offers Time Saver options, which are shorter classes in the 5- to 15-minute range for when you don't have time for a full-hour workout. You can also control the instructor's video size so you can view them as large, dynamic or small. The audio for both the music and the instructor can be individually adjusted, depending on which you prefer to hear more prominently. This was helpful when I was taking Rumble, a boxing class, and made it easier to pay attention to the cues the instructor was providing. As for music, you can only connect to an Apple Music account or pick studio music which is built into the Lululemon Studio app. You can also connect your Apple Watch or other compatible heart rate monitors with this device. During class there are a range of display settings: you can opt to not view yourself on camera, hide or show your data, use closed captioning and more.Because group fitness is all about community, you can view your community stream, which shows other users working out at the same time as you -- and you can cheer them on. If you have friends who own a Lululemon Studio Mirror, you can connect with them for some friendly competition as well. The Studio Mirror offers personal training for an additional fee and during sessions or live classes, you're able to turn on the two-way audio and video technology so you can receive instructor feedback in real-time.SpecsDimensions: 56.0" H, 22.4" W, 1.4" DWeight: 70 pounds Photo Gallery 1/1 $2,495 at Formelife Best personal training smart mirror Forme Studio $2,495 at Formelife If you want a more personalized experience, the Forme Studio may be the way to go. Forme offers two different types of mirrors: Forme Studio and Forme Lift. The Studio is the original mirror that offers on-demand classes and custom workouts as well as live 1:1 personal training. The Forme Lift is the upgraded version of the Forme Studio and offers the same classes and personal training but has motorized resistance cables (with up to 150 pounds of resistance) meant to elevate your strength training experience. The Forme Studio will run you $2,495, whereas the Forme Lift costs a hefty $6,495.I was able to test both but thought that the average person would find the Forme Studio more suitable for their homes. If you buy the Forme Studio, you have the option to lean it against or mount it to the wall for extra security. You will also need to make sure you have 6 by 6 feet of space, with a minimum of 7 feet from floor to ceiling to accommodate the unit. Your wall must have a 12-, 16- or 18-inch metal or wood stud spacing, poured concrete, or concrete masonry units. There's no denying the Forme Studio is a touchscreen, but also has an app (currently only available on iOS). I found the imagery on the Forme Studio to be the best of all the smart mirrors because it's filmed in 4K resolution, which is similar tosome nicer televisions on the market. The instructor also looks life-size on the screen, which feel like they are in the room with you. This device has two front-facing cameras which comes in handy if you sign up for personal training sessions (more on this later). Forme includes camera covers for added privacy. You will need Wi-Fi to use the Forme Studio. You have the option to connect your workout headphones, Forme Heart Rate Monitor (included in your accessories box), other compatible heart rate monitors or an Apple Smartwatch via Bluetooth. One downside is that you'll only be able to access the built-in music on the device. The Forme membership will cost you $49 for the first month, then $149 per month afterward, which is a steep price to pay when the unit itself isn't cheap. You'll need the membership to access over 700 on-demand classes and a fitness concierge, which has you fill out a survey that asks about your goals, fitness level and lifestyle and then curates a workout plan with recommended videos on demand frombarre attachment separatelyfor $395), strength training, boxing, yoga, pilates, Barry's X, dance and meditation. You can also join a program if you want to tackle a specific challenge for the month. Keep in mind some of these classes will require you to have additional equipment like dumbbells on hand. You can filter by the length of the class, type of workout, level, instructor and equipment needed.I tested out a few classes and for the most part, the experience was similar to other smart mirrors. You can adjust your audio based on whether you want to hear more of the music or the instructor, which I like since it can help you focus. During class, the mirror is not as impressive as I expected since it's only able to count your reps. Unlike the Lululemon Studio Mirror, there isn't a sense of camaraderie with other members if you're looking for that group fitness feel. I would've thought that the Forme Studio would be able to offer form corrections or cue suggestions like the Fiture Mini, but it doesn't. What makes the Forme Studio stand out is the 1:1 Live Personal Training (something you can set up through the fitness concierge). The experience is similar to doing a personal training session in person, and this is where the two front cameras are most useful. During a programmed session with your trainer, you'll be able to view them from your screen and vice versa. The trainer has the ability to provide feedback since the cameras track your movements and your whole frame (even if you're on the taller side). If you own the Forme Lift, the trainer can adjust the resistance on the machine remotely if they want to challenge you. Even if you're traveling, you can access your personal training sessions via a tablet. Your trainer will still be able to view you since camera tracking works similarly on tablets.SpecsDimensions: 6 by 6 foot space with a minimum of 7 feet from floor to ceilingWeight: 102 pounds (screen only), 125 pounds (screen with package) Photo Gallery 1/1 Other workout mirrors we tested Fiture Mini (Out of Stock): The Fiture Mini was our recommended pick for people with limited space. It's no longer available for purchase in the US. I was able to test it in my home, and I liked that it didn't require a lot of space for a workout. What made it unique was that it featured Motion Engine technology, which uses gesture controls, provides coaching cues, counts reps and guides your pace and form during class.Echelon Reflect: Compared with the other workout mirrors tested, the Echelon Reflect had a low-quality screen resolution and the instructor screen appeared smaller than the rest. You have the option to mount it to a wall or to a stand and we opted for a stand, but it felt flimsy when operated since it's a touchscreen. We also had issues connecting the app to the mirror and we couldn't control the volume separately from the instructor and the music, so the music always muffled the instructor's directions. We also found it was lacking in class selections compared with its competition. Show more How we test workout mirrors The setup: We looked at the ease or difficulty of the delivery and installation process and how the equipment looks in the testing space. The experience: We took into account the user experience and how easy it is to operate and navigate the smart mirror during class and while browsing the exercise library. We also looked at features that made the user experience easier or better. For example, having volume control over the music and the instructor speaking. The app: We looked at how easy it was to connect the app to the smart mirror and if it was easy to navigate and mirror the device itself. The workouts: Compared to a gym membership, we evaluated the class and program selection the smart mirrors offered and if there were options to personalize the workout even further, such as tracking, personal training or individualized programs. The music: We took into account whether the smart mirror lets you access a third-party music app like Spotify, or if you're expected to use a built-in music program. The content quality: We observed how the screen resolution appeared and how sophisticated the workout content felt, as well as the sound, smoothness and overall quality of the software. WWW.CNET.COMI Made Fried Chicken in an Air Fryer. Now Everything Is DifferentThose of us who own one know it: The air fryer's specific magical power is in imitating foods you would normally fry but without the actual frying part.Making frozen foods such as tater tots and chicken tenders taste and feel like they actually got deep fried, and restoring fried takeout items like mozzarella sticks and onion rings to their former glory is where the air fryer really shines. An air fryer has myriad other uses, but its capacity with fried items alone is worth the price. But can you actually make fried food from scratch in an air fryer? With "fryer" in its very name, can an air fryer actually live up to its promise and produce convincing, homemade fried chicken?"You can get a great fried texture from making fried chicken in the air fryer," said Yvette Ervin, owner and head chef of Brooklyn Chckn 'N' Lbstr. "It won't be exactly the same consistency as it would from being deep fried in oil, however, it will still be really crispy and is a healthier alternative to conventional fried chicken."As a chef who has staked her claim on fried foods, Ervin shared her best practices when it comes to making fried chicken in an air fryer. I went ahead and tried them. How does an air fryer work? Air fryers aren't complicated machines. Just traditional convection heat supercharged by a simple fan. Hazal Ak/Getty Upgrade your inbox Get cnet insider From talking fridges to iPhones, our experts are here to help make the world a little less complicated. Deep frying and air fryer cooking are both considered dry heat cooking methods. Both achieve results via 360 degrees of contact with the source of heat. In a deep fry situation, it's oil, and in an air fryer it's -- you guessed it -- air. "An air fryer uses convection, like a convection oven, and it's the air circulation that cooks the food and transforms it without using any type of trans oil or direct contact heat," said Ervin. While technically not frying, radiant heat from preheating the air fryer gets moved via a circulating fan in an enclosed space, cooking rapidly while creating an atmosphere that can effectively crisp skin or brown any coating on the food in a way that produces fry-like results.Read more:Everything You've Always Wanted to Know About Air FryersAir fryer chicken considerations Classic fried chicken calls for bone-in, skin-on pieces but you can make with boneless if you prefer. David Watsky/CNETWhen it comes to making air fryer fried chicken from scratch, first, consider the chicken. While white and dark meat are individual preferences, as are bone-in chicken versus boneless tenders, different cuts require different approaches."The air fryer is mainly meant for quick, simple meals that you could just set to go and forget about it," said Ervin. "Boneless will cook faster, and will also get an evenly crispy texture from the air fryer because of its uniform thickness.""Larger pieces of bone-in chicken tend to take more time, and they also need more attention," Ervin added. This may involve flipping them during the cooking process, and checking for doneness.Bone-in chicken retains more flavor and juiciness during the cooking process, however, while boneless chicken can be easier to overcook. Dark meat contains more fat than does white meat; when released during cooking, it can add an additional oil element to crisp up the skin.Preparing the chicken The pieces should be uniform in size. Pamela Vachon/CNETWhatever chicken you're working with, "the cooking time is going to vary if you have pieces of different sizes," said Ervin. You can do yourself a favor by cutting them into pieces of similar size, especially with bone-in chicken.Whereas with deep frying you are able to observe the cook in progress and remove smaller pieces as they're ready, most air fryers don't have windows to see what's happening inside the fryer. You can cut breasts and some thighs in half to match smaller pieces like wings and drumsticks. (Kitchen shears are a great way to accomplish this.)The chicken should also be as dry as possible to start, to better adhere to the coating, and to not create opportunities for steam during the cooking process, which impedes the ability to get the exterior crispy or crunchy. The coating is key My full fried-chicken dredge setup. Pamela Vachon/CNETYou can air fry chicken with skinless or skin-on pieces. But without any type of coating, "it's not really fried chicken," said Ervin, "but maybe more like roasted, or rotisserie chicken." It's still a potentially excellent outcome in an air fryer, but it doesn't qualify as fried."You want a flour or a batter, or even a fish fry coating, because it will make the item crispy and feel like fried chicken," said Ervin. An argument can be made for skin-on chicken wings, which are typically deep fried without a coating, (note: without a coating) before they're tossed in the traditional hot sauce mixture, and the air fryer also excels at this.Sourcing various recipes for air fryer fried chicken, there are two schools of thought as respects the coating. The first involves a simple milk or buttermilk brine, and a single dunking in dry coating such as that made with flour, cornstarch, cornmeal, breadcrumbs, or a combination of those things. Cornstarch both absorbs moisture and prevents gluten development in flour, promoting a crispy outcome. Leave enough space so that pieces don't steam. Pamela Vachon/CNETThe second method is more aligned with deep fried chicken, where the chicken gets coated with flour or a flour-based seasoning mixture, dunked in egg or milk, and coated with flour again. This will create a thicker, fried-like coating on the chicken, whereas the first method produces more of a thin crust, or an extension of the skin.In either case, "you don't want to have it wet," said Ervin. While a deep fryer can handle coatings such as a slightly fluid beer batter, the air fryer isn't appropriate for that style.Just a touch of oil An inexpensive oil sprayer will come in handy when making air fryer fried chicken. WonderchefThe final step is a light coating of oil, to make sure any dry flour isn't exposed on the surface of the chicken. Some fat will be released from the meat itself and help hydrate the flour during the cooking process, but you'll need just enough oil to moisten the coating. Ervin suggests olive oil or grapeseed oil, which can be carefully brushed on, or is best dispensed in a spray or pump bottle. This is what separates fried chicken from air fryer fried chicken, as there's far less fat to be absorbed by the coating, resulting in a fried-like exterior with a crispy coating but with a much healthier outcome. The verdict on air fryer fried chicken Don't forget to to flip the bird halfway through. Pamela Vachon/CNETUsing all the available wisdom, I swung for the fences with bone-in, skin-on chicken, cut to pieces of a similar size, and used a coating similar to that of a deep fried chicken. The pieces were dredged in a flour mixture containing both flour and cornstarch, dipped in an egg wash spiked with Tabasco, and coated a final time in the flour mixture. What I would recommend is to spritz oil on all sides of the chicken before putting the pieces in the air fryer, or to brush some oil on the air fryer basket itself to prevent it from sticking. Following the online recipe I sourced, I sprayed the top, and again once the pieces were flipped, but some of the coating got left behind. After about 8 minutes on each side, the outcome was a convincing facsimile of fried chicken, without any of the hassle of deep frying. No deep fryer smell, no oil to discard, just a tasty, crunchy, healthier alternative to the real thing. Pretty good for under 25 minutes. WWW.CNET.COMHow to Use AI to Take the Guesswork Out of Planning Your Thanksgiving DinnerWith just one week untilThanksgiving, it's time to seriously start planning the menu. If you're dreaming of the perfect turkey and sides, artificial intelligencemight just be the best sous-chef out there. While Thanksgiving might be the most magical day of the year, it's also one of the most stressful. Thanksgivingmemesare hilarious, but there ain't nothing funny about slaving away in a hot kitchen from sunup to sundown only to have your aunt that you see twice a year question the quality of yourmac and cheese. "Who made this?" can be a very loaded sentence on Thanksgiving. If you have the means, it can be a time to revel in the bounty of the season's most succulent offerings. But it's also when relatives dip too deep in the sauce and start arguments about pronouns at the dinner table. One of the ways AI can help is by taking the guesswork out of planning an undeniably delicious Thanksgiving meal, no matter what the holidays throw at you. Here's how to use it.Choose an AI tool and get real about your skills Upgrade your inbox Get cnet insider From talking fridges to iPhones, our experts are here to help make the world a little less complicated. Since I'd like the benefit of choosing certainrecipesfrom around the web, I'm using Microsoft's in-browser, text-prompt AI tool,Copilot. Copilot uses LLM (large language model) processing as well as cited sources from the internet to respond to conversational search requests, and it can analyze web pages as you browse. But make sure you give it the info it needs. As in, if you can barely boil water, don't ask an AI tool to design a multicourse French-Chinese fusion banquet with sous vide steaks and flat noodles made from scratch.I let Copilot know I was an amateur in the kitchen, and it gave me some easy-to-prepare recipes with simple-to-source ingredients and minimal steps and prep. One of the options even sounded fancy -- green bean almondine -- which is literally just green beans with sliced almonds.Give AI a head countLet the robot chef know how many hungry people will be in attendance for your Thanksgiving meal. I used Microsoft's Copilot to convert this New York Times recipe for gravy to accommodate 20 people, and it seamlessly converted the measurements into a larger batch: Screenshot by Rachel Kane/CNETAlter recipes to your needsNot everyone wants raisins in their potato salad, and it's best to avoid foods that might upset people's stomachs or inflame allergies when you'll all be trapped at a dinner table in close proximity. For instance, Copilot was able to give me some critical ingredient substitutions on the fly for removing onions from the green bean casserole. Screenshot by Rachel Kane/CNETTake your budget into accountLet the AI tool know how much you've got to spend on Thanksgiving dinner. Copilot was able to provide me with a list of dishes that were low on cost and high in flavor, including waiting for sales or discounts on turkey, getting a smaller turkey, and using plain potatoes, boxed stuffing mix, gravy mix packets, premade pie crust and canned versions of beans, cream of mushroom soup, pumpkin and cranberry sauce.Copilot estimated my entire Thanksgiving meal to cost between $50 and $75, and included an itemized price breakdown of every ingredient I'd need.Be sure to double-check your local prices, though. I'm not convinced you can still find genuine whipped cream for $2 a container, as a quick search reveals the price to be closer to $4.50. Something called "whipped topping," however, was on sale at Kroger for $1.79.Let AI know what you're working withSometimes bad things happen to good people, and one of those bad things might include losing the use of your oven during the Thanksgiving holiday. Copilot was able to swoop in with some solid suggestions for cooking a whole turkey without the aid of an oven. Just please don't deep-fry a frozen turkey. Screenshot by Rachel Kane/CNET Screenshot by Rachel Kane/CNETI pressed Copilot further, letting the tool know I had only a large pot to cook with, and it gave me a detailed recipe for how to poach a whole turkey.Whatever you're working with on Thanksgiving, AI appears to be a decent kitchen companion.Just don't let your judgmental relatives know a robot helped you season the turkey.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 14 Visualizações

Having both an air fryer and a toaster oven. Yet, air fryer toaster ovens exist, combining the two into a space-saving device. It's perfect if you have a smaller kitchen or are renting an apartment and can't afford to take up too much space. As a rule of thumb, dual-function appliances help organize your kitchen and save money.Read more: 52 Best Christmas Gifts 2024: Early Ideas to Clear Your Holiday ListAir fryers are typically basket or pot-style kitchen gadgets and can either focus on heating up one thing or can be a two-in-one appliance. Air fryers cook food by circulating hot air, making it more straightforward to cook food without the use of oil. On the other hand, air fryer toaster ovens cook food using concentrated heat and are typically useful for cooking things that need to be laid flat, like toast or reheating leftovers. Now imagine combining these two appliances into one, it becomes clear why a toaster oven with dual functions similar to an air fryer would be desirable. We've tested several of these combo machines from top small appliance brands to find the best air fryer toaster ovens to add to your kitchen. What's the best overall air-frying toaster oven?I've tested dozens of toaster ovens and air fryers and now hybrid models that do it all. After hours of baking, browning, broiling, toasting and air-frying with hot air, Ninja's Foodi toaster with its powerful air fryer function tops this list as the best toaster oven and air fryer for 2024.Pod-shaped air fryer ovens mostly do one thing: air fry. You can control the temperature, but you're limited to a single cooking function -- there's no broiling, for instance -- and it's much harder to be precise if you're making something finicky and not simply crisping up fried food, frozen pizza or frozen french fries. They also have smaller capacities in comparison to their overall size so I wouldn't call them good space-budgeters, especially if you want one that'll cook enough for two or more people. If you're a little tight on kitchen space, like this New Yorker here, an air fryer/oven combo will do the work of an air fryer and a toaster and some models, like the flip-up Ninja Foodi Air Fryer Oven, don't take up much counter space at all. Here's how the hybrid air fryer toaster ovens performed and a few of my top picks. Best air fryer toaster ovens of 2024 Pros Powerful air fryer function Cooks precisely and evenly Folds up on a hinge to save space on the counter Cons A short interior makes it difficult to cook bulkier foods Walls of oven get dirty faster than larger models Power 1,800 wattsControls DigitalFunctions Air fry, bake, broil, pizza, toastDimensions 8H 15.3W 10.2DPrice $200 $187 at Best Buy The small yet mighty Ninja Foodi bested all others in my final assessment and placed either first or second in nearly every single test I ran, blending fierce power, consistency and control. The Ninja preheated the fastest (by far) and kept its heat consistent throughout. The air fryer function was also best in show and it broiled a salmon filet nicely. It's also the most compact of these countertop ovens and the only model that flips up via a hinge in the back to rest no more than 7 inches from the wall. One drawback is the Ninja's interior size, but I suspect that's also why it works as well as it does. The Ninja is short -- about 6 inches and half the height of many of the others -- so you're somewhat limited in what you can put inside. It also makes things a bit clumsy when you're loading food in and taking it out and it's harder to see while it's cooking. Photo Gallery 1/1 $190 at Best Buy Best looking air fryer and toaster KitchenAid Digital Countertop Oven $190 at Best Buy $190 at KitchenAid While the KitchenAid didn't run away with many of the test categories, it didn't struggle mightily in any of them either. It sports a serviceable air fry function -- although certainly not the best -- excellent temperature consistency and a very sleek and intuitive control panel (my favorite of the lot). It makes the list because I found it to be a reliable oven that's also an ideal size formostkitchens and its sleek and modern design was my favorite of the bunch. It's a bit of a hybrid between the Ninja and the Breville in that it's compact -- just 17 inches across versus the Breville at more than 21 -- but also has a more traditional cooking capacity so you could get some taller items in there, whereas the Ninja is limited in that department. It also looks great, which always counts for something. WWW.CNET.COMSpaceX Launches Starship Flight Test 6: Everything That Happened in 14 Minutes videoSpaceX Launches Starship Flight Test 6: Everything That Happened in 14 Minutes Nov 20, 2024 Tech All right, we're now T minus 20 seconds until liftoff of Starship Flight 6. OK OK. Vehicle was pitching downrange. Booster raptor chamber pressure nominal. Booster and ship avionics power and telemetry nominal. I just a little over a minute dynamic. 6 miles away, so all the sounds still hitting us here, hearing good callouts that power telemetry nominal, that's flying straight and true. We do see all 33 Raptor engines lit up on telemetry screens. At this point we've passed through that point of maximum aerodynamic pressure, that max Q. Now coming up in just a little over a minute from now is gonna be hot staging, so we're gonna see the 6 engines on the ship ignite while still attached to the booster. Just before that, we'll see all but 3 center engines on the booster shut down in what we call Miko, it's most engines cut off instead of main engine. Just about 30 seconds away from hot staging. Yeah. And we heard, we heard the tower is go for catch. The return flag is set for true. Ship engine startup. Stage separation. All right, hot staging confirmed. 6 out of 6 lit on the ship. Boos or boost back going. We heard that we are go for catch. Kate, Jesse, take the views. Hopefully I got a booster coming home real soon. Wow, from our view here, Dan, uh, great views of planet Earth behind that super heavy booster. Right now it is performing the boost back burn. Good news there telling us that the, uh, the pressures inside the ship are good. That is the second stage or the upper portion of the vehicle. Follow along with the telemetry on the bottom of your screen. Yeah, booster is currently super heavy, is currently in its boost back burn. This boost back burns and telemetry nominal. This boost back burn lasts just a little bit over 1 minute, so we've got a little, approximately 30 seconds left. We've had shutdown of that goose back burn. Up next will be Hotage jettison. The view from the camera on the left or from the booster on the left hand side of your screen and then tracking cam there on the right hand side of your screen. We'll see those grid fins. Booster offshore divert. And we can also see that the uh hot stage has been jettisoned. Yes, visual confirmation of that there on your screen, which is great. Now the next Starship is following a nominal trajectory. The next step for booster is going into that landing burn again, it'll light up 13 of those engines and then uh pare down to 3 engines right before booster catch. All right, now just real quick, we did hear the call out, uh, boost back, or excuse me, booster offshore divert. Unfortunately that means that we are no go for the catch. Um, as we said before, both the tower and the vehicle, as well as the operators on console, have been actively evaluating the commit criteria for that return to the launch tower, um, and unfortunately we did not have a pass on those commit criteria, so we are no go for tower catch. And we did mention that we're constantly evaluating the criteria for catch. There's a lot of things that need to go well in order to line that up. Unfortunately today we will forego booster catch today, but what you're seeing on your screen is ship, uh, currently making its way towards the Indian Ocean, still looking good so far. Exactly. So views there of the booster on the left hand side of your screen, views of the ship on the right hand side of your screen. Now we said before that it was not guaranteed that we would be able to make a uh a tower catch today. So while we were hoping for it, like we said, it was pretty epic on attempt one, but the safety of the teams and the public and uh and, and the pad itself are paramount. So we are accepting no compromise. in any of those areas exactly and we're still going to get a lot of good flight data with booster even, but especially with ship again, we have an additional objective today to do an in-space relight of a Raptor engine which again will help us set us up for being able to do deorbit burns, which is phenomenal, which is Which is important for orbital flights and what you're seeing on your screen is a view from super heavy as it's making its way back down to Earth. Yeah, once again we are attempting an offshore landing of the super heavy booster. Uh, so we have seen this before, uh, and it is still very fun to watch watching it come down, uh, for a soft splashdown, uh, off the Gulf Coast of Texas. We can see it there reentering. Uh, we saw earlier those grid fins. There are 4 hypersonic grid fins, or we can see that. Has begun on the super booster. Same pattern, 13 engines will light gone down to 3 just as we expected. And what an incredible view of splashdown that we got today. Oh super heavy. Yeah, I'm sure the buoy cam views will be pretty awesome once again. So we'd like to confirm a water landing once again for the super heavy booster. Congrats to the SpaceX team, uh, for making that milestone as well. Now ship continues to look. We can see that it is. While all of that was happening. Crowd here in Hawthorne, uh, continuing to react to all these amazing views that we're getting. The next milestone is, uh, terminal guidance. Great news there. Uh, uh, Starship terminal guidance referring to what we see here on our screen, the upper stage, uh, at, uh, about 8 minutes 35 seconds or so, we have ship engine cutoff, which will be the cutoff of the, uh, the, the raptor engines. It's. We can see on our screen ship giving us some incredible views brought to us by Starlink. Uh, this view is also very interesting because we can see basically the receding tile line that we referred to earlier where we mentioned we have removed a number of heat shield tiles in order to test out and push the envelope on the ship and demonstrate what its capabilities are. Ship engine cut off. And there we just heard call out for Sico ship engine cutoff. Great news there, everything continuing to look awesome for ship full view looking at on ship here. Trip FTS is saved. Nominal orbit insertion. There's that call out we were waiting for confirmation of good orbital insertion for ship today. It has been a very exciting afternoon so far. Uh, we'd like to send it back over to Dan who can give us that, uh, live view experience. Dan, uh, once again, are you OK after witnessing another Starship launch? Yeah, uh, totally fine. Uh, it's, you guys have to be jealous. This is the only way to do this. This is fantastic. Uh, no, it was really cool to see a lift off 33 out of 33. Uh, didn't go for the booster catch today. Initially we were good and then we tripped the, uh, commit criteria and did the offshore divert, so we went and did that water landing as everybody saw. Uh, we'll dig into it a little bit more, uh, but again, this is, we've done it once, we've now done it twice. We're going to keep trying to do it as this is just a core capability of starship and what's going to make it so incredible. Uh, there's a lot left. We're just about almost 10 minutes into this flight, so about 50+ minutes still to go. Ship nominal orbit, so it's on its way around the planet. It's gonna attempt to do an Space burn. We're going to light one of those raptor engines, the sea level ones in the middle, uh, just to help demonstrate that we can relight in that microgravity environment, really critical for deorbit burns as we start to do some orbital missions in the not too distant future. Um, and then following that, we'll see a ship entry, maybe a splashdown, as you guys said, we're, we're really going to be pushing ship on this one. we're pretty much intentionally putting it in places where we expect it might not do so great. And all that's to try and help us learn, see if we're a little too conservative, and then maybe that opens up more capability for when we start catching them. But, uh, I'll check back in with everybody in a little bit. Uh, I'm gonna tune in and watch the ship fly around planet Earth, uh, and hopefully we see it reentering in the not too distant future. And start to call out for startup. There's some light. There's that raptor relit. And shut down. All right, there you have it, the first time ever lighting a raptor while in outer space other than our asset burn. Um, so really cool to see that relay. That's, that's a pretty critical capability that we're gonna need, uh, when we're doing orbital missions in the not too distant future. The ship, as you can see, is beginning to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere. As a reminder, one of the main goals of today's flight test is for the ship to make it through the extreme heat of reentry and to do so in a controlled manner. Now, reentry is typically a portion of flight where we don't have communication capability with the spacecraft because it's reentering at or around orbital velocity, which is roughly 8 kilometers per second or about 5 miles per second. Now, at those speeds, Yep, pretty fast. Uh, the spacecraft is moving through the atmosphere, uh, rather quickly, and that results in friction, as we can see that starting to happen on our screen, and this creates a plasma field around the vehicle. We're getting a lot clearer view of the Earth in the background with, uh, the different temperatures that we're seeing with the different colors, um, of that plasma around the ship, which is really, really cool to see again. Um, we are pushing the limits of ship today, um, but so far everything is looking pretty nominal. Um, we'll see how the next few minutes goes. Yeah, like we've said before, don't be surprised if this is not. Entirely smooth sailing all the way down to the ocean surface. Similar to Flight 5, we are targeting the same splashdown location in the Indian Ocean, but we are not expecting to recover the vehicle. And there's that nose down orientation. Now, the uh raptor engines will relight and help flip the booster back up. This is a more severe flip given the orientation. The engines will shut down prior to the water making impact and prior to the vehicle making impact with the water. Our ship is doing great so far. Are relighting? What a great reorientation by Starship. All 3 down to 2. And Star Wow we have down in the Indian Ocean. Some awesome gooey cam action here. Daylight news. Incredible. We really pushed the limits on shipping and made it all the way back down to earth. WWW.CNET.COMBest Earplugs to Prevent Hearing Loss for 2024Our Picks $136 at Amazon Best earplugs overall Minuendo adjustable earplugs View details $136 at Amazon View details $25 at Loop Best earplugs for the deep worker and sleeper Loop Quiet View details $25 at Loop View details $29 at Amazon Best earplugs for the recreational concert-goer Vibes Hi-Fidelity earplugs View details $29 at Amazon View details $20 at Decibullz Best earplugs for the heavy-duty listener Decibullz custom-molded earplugs View details $20 at Decibullz View details Table of Contents You may think that the noise you face on a daily basis isn't all that harmful, but constant exposure to loud noises can damage your hearing over time. If you constantly find yourself in loud environments, you might want to consider investing in a pair of earplugs. Most of us don't think about protecting our ears until signs of damage begin to appear. But it's easy to protect your ears if you start early, and getting a good pair of earplugs can help keep those loud sounds away from your inner ears. They also make great tech gifts. Watch this: First Impressions: Loop Dream Earplugs 01:17 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, exposure to extremely loud sounds (anything over 85 decibels) for a prolonged period of time can cause hearing loss, , even if it's a one-time thing. The CDC also says that the damage to the inner ear or auditory neural system is generally permanent. What that means is that you could potentially face some hearing loss from just one loud concert or football game. But it's not just those intensely loud sounds that harm our ear health. Even the noise pollution we interact with daily can harm your hearing. Scary, right?I tried out each earplug and wore them during my regular daily routine. I also took the earplugs to karaoke night to test them out in a loud environment.Read more:Hearing Loss Is More Common Than You Think: 5 Signs You Should Get TestedBest overall earplugs to protect your hearing in every settingFor loud concerts, noisy restaurants or deep work, I found the Minuendo Adjustable Lossless Earplugs, the most expensive on this list, to be the ideal earplug for all sorts of hearing protection. With the adjustable node on the side of each plug that reduces sound by from 7 decibels to 25 decibels, you can customize the level of sound protection to serve you in moderately loud to critically harmful-to-your-hearing environments.Best earplugs for hearing loss prevention $136 at Amazon $136 at Amazon These are the everything earplugs, with a customizable node that you can adjust for your desired level of noise reduction and they come with 11 sets of ear tips and a carrying case. They are also conveniently magnetic, which is a thoughtful touch that makes them easier to keep track of. The Minuendos were the most entertaining and environmentally versatile to use. You adjust the noise reduction node, which can reduce sound by 7 to 25 decibels, and hear the differences in sound reduction. While doing karaoke, these muffled the sound the best, out of all the earplugs I tried. Not everyone wants or needs $150+ earplugs. Avid concert-goers, musicians or anyone looking to invest in hearing protection would reap the benefits of the Minuendos, absolutely -- and that's who these plugs were designed for. But someone who wants an earplug they can wear in any situation, from loud restaurants and social gatherings to concerts and noisy transit would enjoy these plugs as well. And that's not even considering how great they were at reducing the background noise of my office and apartment -- the AC unit became inaudible once I put these on and turned them to the highest noise-reduction setting. Pros: Variety of earplug tips Most customizable sound Easy to insert Cons: Expensive Photo Gallery 1/1 $25 at Loop Best earplugs for the deep worker and sleeper Loop Quiet $25 at Loop As someone who lives on a busy New York street, it can be hard to focus deeply in my apartment without the constant interruptions of sirens or beeping cars or the occasional shouting passerby. The Loop Quiet earplugs are an affordable option that muffle sound and allow for deep, uninterrupted work or sleep to take place. The Loop Quiet earplugs reduce sound by up to 27 decibels while working, sleeping, traveling or attending events. While they aren't designated to serve super-noisy environments, the level of decibel protection surely provides a sound barrier that comes in handy in louder spaces, too. Alongside the Quiets, Loop also offers a colorful selection of affordable earplugs for concert-going, motorcycling, productivity, social gathering and parenting that screaming child of yours. The Loop Quiet earplugs were easy to install and fit snugly in my ears. I slept with the Quiets in and found it much easier to fall asleep when the sound of my loud AC unit was reduced by the plugs. While working in my busy office, the Quiets made surrounding conversation nearly difficult to understand, which allowed me to further focus on my work. It wasn't until I had tried these on that I realized how distracted I was by moderately audible office conversations around me. For their price, style and sound-muffling qualities, these are a top pick for getting work done, sleeping and subduing everyday noise, but they could also be used in louder settings if need be. Pros: Secure fit while sleeping and working Sleek design Variety of colors and styles Inexpensive Cons: Not intended for extremely loud environments Photo Gallery 1/1 $29 at Amazon Best earplugs for the recreational concert-goer Vibes Hi-Fidelity earplugs $29 at Amazon This is one unfussy earplug. It was the easiest to use and insert into my ear, and it properly dampened the sounds of the busy New York streets where I was walking and muffled the blaring sounds of karaoke songs. The Hi-Fidelity earplugs come with a carrying case and three different plug sizes. Of the four earplugs I tried, the Hi-Fidelity earplugs, which reduce sound by up to 15 decibels, reduce noise the least amount, but they are still an effective and affordable choice for attending loud events. These earplugs, according to Vibes' website, are primarily for listening to live music. Wearing these during karaoke, I thought that they reduced the harsh noise well without making everything difficult to hear or understand. Some earplugs, like the Minuendos, are so good at reducing noise it is hard to interpret the world around you, but the Hi-Fidelity Earplugs balance both ends of that spectrum. With their 15-decibel sound reduction, you could also use them in other moderately loud environments, like parties or restaurants. The Hi-Fidelity earplugs function as an inexpensive option for the occasional attendee of live events. Plus, they are simple to use and insert. Pros: Easiest to insert and removeLightweightSecure fitInexpensiveCons: Less sound protection than other earplugs Photo Gallery 1/1 $20 at Decibullz Best earplugs for the heavy-duty listener Decibullz custom-molded earplugs $20 at Decibullz You are going to have to put in some work to have the Decibullz Custom-Molded Earplugs work for you, but once they are fit to your ear, they reduce sound by up to 31 decibels, the highest level of sound reduction on this list. What made these difficult to install was their finicky nature as you are heating them in boiling hot water and then molding them to your ear shape. You have to remove earrings and piercings before putting the hot mold in your ear, because there is a risk the mold will stick to them. My mold wasn't hot enough the first time I tried to fit it to my ear; the second time that I heated the product, I had to exercise caution in fitting the hot plastic to my ear. After the mold is fitted to your ear, you are instructed to wait five minutes with it in. Putting a hot product that comes with multiple warnings near a sensitive part of your face can be distressing, especially considering there are other earplug options that will protect your hearing without the customizing fuss. The earplugs come with three sets of triple flange tips and one set of foam tips, a carrying pouch and thermoplastic custom molds, which you heat in boiling water and then mold to your ear for a tight fit. It can be a bit daunting to fit the product to your ear, but fortunately, if you don't get it right the first time you can remold it. It can be uncomfortable to put something that has been sitting in boiling water into your ear, then press on it to shape it properly. I ran into some trouble with that. While some of the other earplugs I reviewed were designed for concerts or moderately loud events, these are designed for the next level of loud environments, like shooting guns or construction work. For $26 you are getting stellar sound protection and a tailored-to-you earplug. But that's only if the product is properly molded to your ear. What I found when I was using these during karaoke was that they didn't work any better than the other earplugs I tried, even though they promised higher sound protection. Pros: Remoldable thermoplastic custom molds, in case you mess up molding to your ear the first timeHigh sound protectionVariety of tips with triple flange and foamInexpensive Cons: Molding hot plastic to the shape of your ear can be uncomfortableIf not molded correctly you don't get the benefits of enhanced sound protection Photo Gallery 1/1 How we tested the best earplugs for preventing hearing loss To test the earplugs, I wore them as I worked, slept and socialized throughout one week and considered the price, fit, comfort, quality of noise reduction and usability of each. I switched between the earplugs during my office work and while I was out at bars, walking around or on the subway. For earplugs that were designated to serve noisy environments, the Decibullz and the Vibes, I brought them to louder places, like karaoke and wore them on walks around my bustling block. For the Loop Quiet earplugs that were meant for reducing background noise, I worked and slept with them. For earplugs that could serve both environments, like the Minuendos, I wore them as often as I could. For more on how CNET tests the products and services it reviews, here is a full explanation.Fit and comfort: I wore these earplugs as I slept, worked, hung out and walked throughout the week to test their comfort.Noise reduction: To test how well these earplugs reduced noise, I would switch between different earplugs in the same environment to compare their noise reduction properties to one another.Usability: I considered the styles and accessories such as carrying cases and variety of tips that the earplugs came with, and how likely I would be to use them in my everyday life. Show more Factors to consider when choosing earplugs for hearing loss prevention When purchasing an earplug for hearing loss prevention, consider the level of decibel protection it will provide. A higher number of decibel protection can take the dangers of loud arenas down a couple of notches. The earplugs I tried offered anywhere from 15 to 31 decibels of protection. Another essential factor to consider is the question, "will you actually wear these?" That all comes down to the style and fit of the earplug. Consider how comfortable it is to have the earplug in your ear, would you be fine wearing it for an hour? Three hours? As I spent time with these earplugs, I began to recognize the various purposes for which someone would use this product. I don't go to concerts as often as I do work in a noisy apartment, so an earplug that muffles the noise in my apartment suits me better than one that reduces the level of sound by 30 decibels. But a musician or someone who attends a live music event every week will demand more sound protection.Read more: What Musicians Can Teach Us About Noise and Hearing Loss Show more The importance of protecting your hearing We live in an incredibly noisy world and it can be nearly impossible to avoid the cacophony and protect our ears. Luckily, you don't have to. That's where earplugs come in.Wearing earplugs in loud spaces like at concerts (being in the front row at a rock concert produces 140 decibels of noise, according toUniversity of Iowa Health Care's website), at noisy restaurants (around 60 to 80 decibels), while using heavy machinery (around 110 decibels) or riding the subway (around 90 decibels) can not only prevent hearing loss but also tinnitus.I should add that, before I wrote this article I was not an avid earplug user. But as I worked, walked around and traveled with these earplugs in, I quickly became converted to an earplugs-for-everything advocate. They helped me focus more on my work with less distractions. They made the commute on the subway nearly silent. We've compiled a list of earplugs that will dampen the noisiest concerts and loudest subway rides, but also provide clarity as you work and move, because you shouldn't only care about your hearing health in particularly blaring situations. For more on hearing tips, here are10 tips to lower your risk of hearing lossandfive ways to take care of your hearing aids. While the brand name may not ring a bell for you, its sibling company that's under the Signify umbrella likely is familiar -- Philips Hue.Wiz does make color-changing bulbs that are also quite good, but here we are focusing on the brand's high-quality tunable white bulbs. These are a typical-shaped bulb, A19, with an E26 base with an incandescent equivalent rating of 60 watts. While these smart home platform integrations aren't necessarily unique, Matter support is a bit more novel -- at least right now. These options mean that you'll have a lot of flexibility in where and how you manage your Wiz smart bulbs. One of the ways people use these smart home platforms is for automation, like connecting to a smart sensor to turn on the lights when motion is detected. With these new Wiz bulbs, that ability is fully built into the light with the need for a secondary sensor.Read more:Best Cheap Home Security DevicesThere are some downsides to the Wiz bulb, and that is in the motion automation feature and Matter connectivity. As for what Wiz calls Spacesense, this feature works mostly well, but in order for bulbs to link together and interact properly for motion detection, you have to ensure that bulbs are at least 6.5 feet (or 2m) apart. I've also had some inconsistencies with the reaction time for the feature. It's not a deal-breaker for me, but it's worth noting. As for Matter, that is more of an issue for the new smart home device standard and hopefully improves with a future update. We'll know for certain in a couple of weeks, of course, but we saw this device drop below $500 for the first time during last month's Prime Day sale so a drop much lower than the price available today would be surprising.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 45 Visualizações

Although a balanced diet is key to keeping them healthy, you may also want to consider taking dietary supplements -- after consulting your doctor about the essential vitamins you might need for better hair growth, glowing skin and healthy nails. You may think your diet covers everything your body needs, but doctors often prescribe vitamins and supplements to help people who are deficient in ways they can't help. These supplements are a practical way to incorporate essential nutrients into your body, whether it's vitamin A, C or D or other vital minerals and proteins, like iron and collagen. If you struggle with vitamin deficiency and find it tricky to incorporate key vitamins into your diet, a few tablets can be highly effective workarounds.Read more: 22 of the Best Gifts Under $50 for 2024But the market is flooded with a ton of supplements, and there are no standard measurements. So finding the right vitamins can be daunting. Vitamins might be weighed in milligrams or micrograms, and there's a considerable difference: a milligram is equivalent to 1,000 micrograms, in the same way that a gram is equivalent to 1,000 milligrams. Our CNET experts have gone through scientific research to find the best vitamin supplements for hair, skin and nails, to help you match your goals and save you trouble when you aren't sure where to look. What are the best overall vitamins for hair, skin and nails? There are a lot of multivitamins that claim that they can improve hair, skin and nails, you need to pay attention to the ingredients. The best overall vitamins for hair, skin and nails include vitamin B7 (biotin), collagen, vitamin C and omega-3s.Vitamin B7 is essential for the health of your hair, skin and nails. It isn't the type of thing you can stock up on -- taking a ton of biotin doesn't amplify the benefits. Collagen is a protein that makes up connective tissue. As we age and our production of collagen decreases, the once-tight fibers become more like a maze. This translates to wrinkles on the face. Supplements include collagen to help your skin elasticity and reduce wrinkles. Vitamin C has various benefits for the body, and it also increases collagen production in your body. Lastly, Omega-3s help maintain the cholesterol-derived layer of our skin cells. They contribute to the shine of your hair and keep your scalp healthy. Studies have found that it can also help treat the symptoms of inflammatory skin conditions.Best vitamins for hair, skin and nails in 2024 Pros Affordable multivitamin at only $12 a bottle USP certified, meaning the factories meet FDA good manufacturing practices Lasts for 50 days Cons The vitamins aren't third-party certified for purity Not an option for vegans because they contain gelatin Price $ Form Gel capsuleServing size Three gel capsulesSupply 50 days $12 at Amazon Nature's Bounty Extra Strength multivitamin is the best overall hair, skin and nail vitamin because of its robust nutrient composition. It's also one of the most affordable multivitamins you can find, at around $10 for a 150-capsule bottle. The dosage is three soft gel capsules each day -- not the worst I've seen, but not the best either.Vitamin A and zinc are included in this multivitamin to promote collagen production. If you have a vitamin D deficiency, a huge benefit of this is you also get 100% of your daily recommended amount, which may help clear up acne. Unlike other options available, Nature's Bounty multivitamin includes horsetail for thinning hair and skin health. A 2019 review of research found insufficient evidence to establish horsetail as an effective treatment for hair loss.Nature's Bounty also includes a significant amount of biotin (vitamin B7) at 5,000 mcg per serving. That sounds like a lot, but no side effects have been reported in doses of up to 10,000 mcg (10 mg) of biotin. Experts note that supplementing biotin at high levels can cause false or low test results for immunoassays, which use biotin as part of the testing method. That's something to consider for upcoming doctor's appointments. Vitamin E has been linked to treating eczema by suppressing inflammation. Vitamin C aids in collagen production and UV skin protection.Olly Undeniable Beauty Hair, Skin and Nails vitamins contain a large dose of biotin at 2,500 mcg. I was also glad to see 50 mg keratin included in the Olly Undeniable Beauty vitamin. Keratin is the basic component in our hair, skin and nails. The research into the effectiveness of taking additional keratin supplements is lacking, but it's a good option for people with a keratin deficiency.Olly is naturally flavored and colored with sweet potatoes, apples, cherries, radish, carrot and blueberry juices. Reviews of Olly suggest these grapefruit-flavored gummies taste good. Note that some reviewers say the smell is off-puttingin some batches. I like Olly because of the depth of the product line. WWW.CNET.COMModem vs. Router: What's the Difference? For many of us, our internet hardware is best left to technicians and tech-savvy friends and family to set up on our behalf. There's no shame in that, but understanding how your Wi-Fi works is still well worth it. A good start is learning the difference between your modem and router. From there, you'll have a much easier time fixing problems as they arise, and you'll have a better sense of when and how to best upgrade your network, too. What's more, plenty of home internet providers will let you skip an equipment rental fee if you use your own modem or router, so buying your own hardware could save you money over the long run, too.Let's get right to it, starting with the likely starting point for your home's internet connection:Your modem connects your home network to the outside worldThe internet is also known as the World Wide Web because that's basically what it is -- a massive web of computers and servers that can pass information back and forth in mere milliseconds. Smartphones and other cellular devices can connect to that web with a wireless connection to the nearest cell tower, but noncellular devices like smart home gadgets, gaming consoles and your computer need another way to access the web and get online. This Arris Surfboard is a good recent example of a modem -- its job is to encode your internet traffic and send it out into the web, then decode the signals you receive in response. ArrisThat's where your home's modem comes in. Short for modulator-demodulator, your modem's job is to act as the translator for your home network. It takes whatever data you want to send out into the internet -- a Google search, a request to refresh your Instagram feed, an email, you name it -- and modulates that data into an encoded electronic signal that can travel through the web. When that signal reaches its destination, the receiving modem will demodulate, decode it into readable data and then send a response. Here's a practical example: When you're at home shopping on Amazon and you click "Add to cart," your modem sends that request to Amazon's servers. Then, Amazon responds by sending the confirmation that your bulk order of red gummy bears is, indeed, in your cart. All of that happens within a fraction of a second, and you see it play out on your screen because your modem is connecting you with Amazon through the web. Thanks, modem! In the early days of the internet, a modem was all most people used to get online. You'd plug your modem into your home phone line for a dial-up connection with your internet service provider, and then you'd wire the modem to your computer to connect that computer to the web. Wired connections to the modem like that are great for a connection that's as fast and reliable as your ISP allows, but they aren't practical if you want to be able to connect from anywhere in your house, or if you want to use things like wireless smart home gadgets. For that, you'll need a way for those devices to connect to your modem without wires at all.Gee, if only there was a device for that, some way to "route" all of those wireless signals to the right place... This Asus router offers wireless access to your modem's connection with the web (hence the antennas). Chris Monroe/CNETYour router connects your devices to your modem without wiresYep, that's what your router is for. Instead of wiring each of your devices to your modem, you wire a router to it. From there, that router broadcasts a Wi-Fi network. Any Wi-Fi device in range of that network can use whatever password you've set to connect wirelessly to the router and, through it, to the modem and the web. That's also why it's important to set a strong password for your network -- without one, anyone within range will be able to use your connection and potentially interfere with other devices. There's a wide range of Wi-Fi routers available for use in people's homes, and a wide range of strengths and weaknesses between them. If you live in a small home and don't use the internet too heavily, then a basic, stand-alone router might be all you need. If your home is larger, then you might want to upgrade to a mesh router that uses multiple devices throughout your house to relay a stronger, more reliable Wi-Fi signal from room to room. If you're a hardcore gamer, you might want to invest in a feature-rich gaming router to help optimize your connection with whatever server you're playing on and keep latency as low as possible as you're lining up headshots. You should also know that all routers aren't created equal. Just as cellular connections got faster and faster from 3G to 4G to 5G, Wi-Fi has improved, too, with new-and-improved versions of the standard released every five to ten years. The latest generation, Wi-Fi 7, promises top speeds to other Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 devices, plus better performance on networks where many devices are trying to connect simultaneously.Wireless connections typically aren't as fast or dependable as wired connections, so the wireless connection between your devices and your router is likely the weakest point in the chain that connects your home to the web. That's why it makes sense to invest in a capable router with strong performance over Wi-Fi -- and it's why we're constantly testing the latest routersto bring you the best upgrade recommendations. This T-Mobile gateway acts as both a 5G modem and a wireless router. Rick Broida/CNETGateways combine a modem and router into oneA wireless home network needs a connection to the web (the modem) and wireless access to that connection for your devices (the router). That doesn't mean that you need two separate devices, though. Shop around, and you'll see all-in-one devices that combine the two into a single piece of hardware, often called a gateway. They're simply modems with their own, built-in routers. Many internet providers will rent out devices like this when setting up your connection, including AT&T, Xfinity and Optimum. Gateways are also common with cellular internet plans, like with T-Mobile Home Internet, where your incoming internet signal arrives over the air instead of by ground-laid wire like with fiber, cable or DSL. You need a special radio to accept cellular signals like those, so the provider will often provide an all-in-one gateway with that radio built right in.In most cases, you can turn off the gateway's wireless network -- the router part -- and use your own router if you so choose. Just connect that router to the gateway with an Ethernet cable, just like you would with a regular modem. Be sure to turn that gateway's wireless network off in the device settings -- otherwise, you'll have two networks in your home that could interfere with each other or cause confusion. Enlarge Image The speed ratings listed on router packaging will give you an approximate sense of the combined speed of each band -- but you can only connect to one band at a time, so those ratings are often misleading. Ry Crist/CNETHow can I tell if a modem or router is fast enough?Modem and router speed is typically described in terms of the amount of data the device can transfer each second, typically in megabits. The more megabits of data a modem or router can handle in a given second, the faster that modem or router is. Look for those top transfer rates listed in Mbps, or megabits-per-second. If it's a really fast piece of hardware, then you might see the speed listed in gigabits-per-second, or Gbps. 1Gbps equals 1,000Mbps.Mbps is the same unit internet service providers use to describe the speed of their respective plans, so it's a good idea to ensure that your modem and router are fast enough to make the most out of your connection. For instance, I have a fiber connection in my home that allows for downloads and uploads up to 300Mbps. A modem and router that supported top speeds of up to 800Mbps would likely be more than enough for my needs, but if I had a faster gigabit plan from my provider (1Gbps, or 1,000Mbps), then I'd definitely be looking to upgrade. With routers, you can get a rough sense of the speed capabilities by looking at the speed rating, typically featured prominently on the box. Those speed ratings consist of two letters followed by a number, like AX1500. The letters tell you which generation of Wi-Fi the router supports ("AX" means Wi-Fi 6, for instance, while "AC" indicates Wi-Fi 5). The number tells you the approximate combined speeds of each of the router's bands (usually 2.4 and 5GHz, as well as a second 5GHz band if it's a tri-band router -- or a 6GHz band if the router supports Wi-Fi 6E). Just know that those speed ratings are typically pretty misleading, because you can only connect to one band at a time. Checking the fine print as you shop to see the top speed of each individual band will give you a better sense of each router's true capabilities. One final thoughtIf you're considering buying your modem, make sure that your provider allows you to do that (AT&T, for instance, does not), and get one that your provider supports. Different modes of internet require different kinds of modems, so you'll want to be sure and get one that'll actually work with your connection. The help section of your ISP's website is the best place to find guidance here -- look for a list of supported modems before you pull the trigger on a purchase.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 45 Visualizações
