Best MagSafe wireless chargers for iPhonewww.macworld.comMacworldWeve rounded up the best MagSafe, Qi2, Qi2 25W, and MagSafe-compatible magnetic chargers, from the plain pad to multi-functional stands (up to six devices charged), and even the most colorfulfrom snap-on chargers and modular stands to foldable power banks and full desk mats.Apples MagSafe technology, supported by all models of iPhone since the iPhone 12 (except the iPhone SE and 16e), presents a more efficient way of wirelessly charging compatible iPhones. MagSafe is the ring of magnets around the iPhones internal charging coil that senses compatible accessories and magnetically snaps securely into the most efficient charging position with the right accessories. With MagSafe, youre less likely to wake up to find your phone wasnt correctly placed on the wireless charger so didnt charge at all!We have tested a lot of magnetic chargersMagSafe, Qi2 and Compatibleand here inform you which one will work best for you. There are simple magnetic wireless chargers, multi-device chargers for iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods, travel chargers, car chargers and more. Best simple MagSafe chargersBest 2-in-1 MagSafe chargersBest 3-in-1 MagSafe chargersBest 4-in-1 MagSafe ChargersBest travel MagSafe chargersBest MagSafe charging stands with power banksBest MagSafe car chargerBest wireless charging desk matBest wireless charging sleeveOffering up to 25W power output in the right configuration, MagSafe charging is much faster than basic 7.5W magnetic wireless charging. The similar Qi2 standard, supported by the iPhone 13-17 families (and unofficially the iPhone 12 but strangely not the latest 16e) offers similar 15W speed charging. Qi 2.2, also known as Qi2 25W, meets MagSafe at 25W for iPhone 16/17.MagSafe or Qi2 certificationApple certifies MagSafe accessories to ensures that the output charging is 15W for most iPhones, and up to 25W for iPhone 16 and 17 (with Apples latest MagSafe charger or chargers certified for Qi2 25W). Non-certified magnetic but MagSafe-compatible chargers are usually just 7.5W with a ring of magnets to hold your phone in place. Certified MagSafe chargers also have a single-wire NFC antenna that allows the iPhone to identify the device and a built-in magnetometer to prevent compass interference while you are using your iPhone while its charging. In our tests, 15W MagSafe and Qi2 chargers are evenly matched for charging speeds. 7.5W MagSafe compatible chargers, as you might expect, take around twice as longcertainly in the early stages of charging. But dont rule out 7.5W chargers as they are often high quality, nearly always noticeably cheaper and just take a while longer to fully charge an iPhone. The king of the hill is Apples new MagSafe charger and chargers based on the new Qi2 25W technology that are definitely faster at 25W, but only with iPhone 16 or later.FoundrySimple vs multi-device magnetic chargersThe most basic form of MagSafe or magnetic charger is the simple pad that latches on to the compatible iPhone. Some pads feature a pop-out arm so the iPhone can be propped up while charging. There are also products that can simultaneously charge an iPhone plus other Apple devices, such as an Apple Watch or wireless AirPods charging case. Note that the AirPods case must be of the wireless variety, and the original AirPods case lacked this functionality. The base of a multi-charger could also be used to charge a second iPhone but mostly not magnetically and at 5W rather than 7.5W, 15W, or 25W. Also see our round up of the Best Apple Watch chargers and stands.Best simple MagSafe chargersA simple MagSafe charging pad is the cheapest route to wireless iPhone charging. Its still half as fast as using a standard Lightning or USB-C cable, however, and if you are going to the bother of connecting this product to a wall charger, why not just use a Lightning (iPhone 14 or earlier) or USB-C (iPhone 15 and up) cable? You can fast-charge an iPhone to 50% battery in under 30 minutes using a cable, while it takes around 50 minutes to wirelessly charge iPhone from 0 to 50% using even 15W MagSafe. 25W chargers can refill an iPhone to 50% in around 30 minutes. That said, there are interesting options to choose from. After these well look at more multi-functional MagSafe chargers.1. Its the charger that Apple would have shipped with the iPhone if it did such things anymore. Its as minimalist a design as youd expect from Appleit looks a lot like a giant Apple Watch Charger. You can also use it to charge your AirPods.Apples latest version of this charger offers 15W Qi2 support and, more importantly, a faster 25W charging speed with iPhone 16 (and later). It also added a 2-meter length option for $10/10 more, which is very welcome. A 30W USB-C power adapter is required for 25W charging. In our tests using the Apple MagSafe Charger we wirelessly powered up an iPhone 16 Pro from 0% to 50% in just over 30 minutes. It can also charge your AirPods case (AirPods 2 or AirPods Pro), although not at the same time as the iPhonefor that, youll need at least a 2-in-1 wireless charger. The standard 1m cable is too short to comfortably charge and use your iPhone at the same time, or maybe stretch from a power socket to a nearby table, so we recommend the 2m upgrade. Dont forget that this Apple charger still requires a USB-C power adapterat least 20W if you want 15W charging and at least 30W to enable 25W charging.Twelve SouthAn aesthetic partner is the Twelve South Forte Charging Stand pedestal, pictured above, that is a cradle for the Apple MagSafe Charger that can then hold the iPhone in portrait or landscape and tilts 70-degrees. Tilt the top back to create a flat platform for charging AirPods. Its pricey for just a cradle but it effectively creates the only potential 25W wireless charging stand for the iPhone 16 and up.2. As such it would perfectly suit the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air of those shades.Another difference is the length of cable and maybe 1.5m is a Goldilocks length for you if Apples 1m cable is too short and 2m cable too long.Other than that, this simple charger matches the Apple pad for speed (25W for iPhone 16/17 and 15W for iPhone 12-15), and is more likely to be found discounted than the Apple either direct or on Amazon. Its a solid alternative to Apple if any of these differences take your fancy.3. Owners of iPhone 15 or earlier can rest assured that this charger is as fast as the Apple one.It works just as well, though, and is one of the cheaper premium magnetic chargers. The cable is a decent length at 1.5mhalf again as long as that on the base model Apple MagSafe Charger pad, but not as long as on the top-end 2m Apple charger or the 2m Belkin MagSafe charger reviewed below.Like Apples MagSafe Charger it can also charge your AirPods case (AirPods 2 or AirPods Pro) when the iPhone is removed. In the U.S. Anker offers this charger only in a two-pack. A spare charger for downstairs, the office, bedroom, car and so on is always useful.4. The cable is twice as long as Apples basic model, which makes using the phone much easier when charging. Its also thicker nylon-braided cable with a handy integrated silicone cable tie.Its list price is higher than Apples, which is a surprise, so youre paying a premium for the longer premium cable and the kickstand but we think its worth the extra if you must have a certified 15W MagSafe charger. Check our price comparison here for cheaper online prices. Weve seen it discounted at half its list price so you could pick up a bargain. An alternative is the 15W Anker Qi2 MagGo pad, reviewed above, which has a 1.5m cable but no stand.Again, a straight cable connection will be faster but we like the kickstand, which you dont get with a standard cable connection. You can buy with a 27W power adapter included or just on its own if you already have a wall charger to use. There are a few very similar Belkin Charger Pads so make sure you get what youre after. For example, there is a slower but more affordable 7.5W MagSafe-compatible BoostCharge Charger Pad ($29 and sometimes cheaper from Amazon U.S. and Amazon U.K.) that lacks the stand. If you just want a cheap MagSafe-compatible charging pad, this is a decent option. Be warned: Belkin also sells a Qi Wireless Charging Pad that lacks the magnetic connection so is not recommended as it will be picky where the phone is placed and slower to charge as a result.5. Nomad also sells a MagSafe version, the Stand One, for $10 more but everything is otherwise the same except for the color options: the Stand comes in Black or White, while the Stand One is available in Carbite (which really is black) and Silver. The Nomad Stand and Stand One look like 2-in-1 chargers, with the area at the back of the stand begging to be a simple Qi charging pad for your AirPods, but its an iPhone-only charger. Its a lovely looking stand that is the sturdiest wireless charging stand weve tested, with a real heft and an anti-slip rubber base. It is decidedly heavy (1.35lbs or 613g), so could be used as a paperweight if you have your desk fan turned up too high. Its made of metal with a glass panel that gives it a glossy look from the front. The 21-degree viewing angle works well for comfortable viewing but if you want to customize the angle to your own liking youll need to choose one of the more adjustable 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 wireless chargers reviewed below.Nomad does make a 3-in-1 version, the $180 Stand One Max (discounted at the time of writing to a more reasonable $119), which can charge iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time. This also looks great and charges the iPhone at a rapid 15W. It does have a flaw, unfortunately, in that it cant charge the iPhone in landscape orientation (for Apples StandBy mode) when charging a Watch at the same time as the two charging pads are too close to each other. Otherwise, its a fine-looking, if again a little expensive, fast charger.Best 2-in-1 MagSafe chargersWhy restrict your charger to just one device? You can buy MagSafe chargers that tackle up to six different devices at the same time. Here, we start with basic 2-in-1 MagSafe chargers that can wirelessly charge your iPhone and AirPods case (the case must be wireless-charging enabled). Most multi-device chargers are stands but there are also folding travel chargers that work equally well full-time on your desk or nightstand or on the road with you at your hotel or office space. Some 2-in-1 and 3-in-1 magnetic chargers are more portable than others so make sure to keep reading this feature for our list of Best travel MagSafe chargers, which may better suit your needs than these more static chargers.1. In our tests the Qi2-based ESR 3-in-1 Charger with CryoBoost took only 10 minutes longer to charge an iPhone 16 Pro to 50% than Apples 25W MagSafe Charger, reviewed at the top of this article. The ESRs Qi2 pad is not adjustable, although you can position the iPhone in either landscape (StandBy) or portrait orientations. In this way it lacks the front-facing flexibility of the HiRise 3 Deluxe, but it is available at a significantly lower price and much faster. It comes with a decent-length cable and a 30W USB-C wall charger. Its closest rival in looks is the Journey Trio 3-in-1, reviewed below, which also features a detachable Watch charger. In terms of budget, its a close run race with the Anker Qi2 MagGo 3-in-1 Stand, which has a different design and a more powerful USB-C charger. Check the prices to see which is the most affordable at the time of reading.A slightly cheaper non-CryoBoost model can be found on Amazon. If you can spend the extra on the CryoBoost model (Amazon / ESR) the cooling tech should make charging faster.Read our full ESR Qi2 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station with CryoBoost review 3. It has the same small 3.5-inch square (9cm) footprint, and Qi2 wireless charging technology to match MagSafe on 15W speed. The AirPod charging pad charges at 5W and could instead charge a second phone, although much slower than with the MagSafe pad. Apple Watch charging is fast, with the back-mounted pad providing 5W of power. It too folds up flat to make it travel friendly, and this time comes with a 45W USB-C chargers that is further boosted with U.K. and E.U. travel adapters. For a 3-in-1, its light at just 10.7oz (302g). The cuter and more compact Anker 3-in-1 Cube, reviewed below, weighs 14.3oz (405g).Its not as affordable as the ESR so misses our budget recommendation. However, with its foldability and travel plugs, this makes a great charging station choice for at base and on your travelssee lower down for more best MagSafe travel chargers. if you dont mind the Watch at the back, this chargers flexibility and fast speeds makes it an easy recommendation.4. The stylish HiRise 3 Deluxe, as its name suggests, goes more vertical and so has a smaller footprinthandy for bedside tables and other places where a giant charging stand is less welcome. It is fully Apple certified, so can fast-charge any MagSafe iPhone (iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15 or 16 models but not SE) at 15W as well as fast-charge an Apple Watch (Series 7, 8, 9, SE and Ultra) at 5W and Apple AirPods (2nd and 3rd generation AirPods, and all AirPods Pro) at 7.5W. That said, in tests we did find the HiRise 3 noticeably slower than some chargers when powering up an iPhone. Look to the ESR Qi2 3-in-1 Charger with CryoBoost if you want the fastest iPhone wireless charging in a multi-device format, although that stand is not as adjustable as this one.Its 6 inches (15.4cm) high, 3.4in (8.5cm) wide and 6.3in (15.9cm) deep. In comparison, the Belkin 3-in-1 is 13.5cm wide. For an even smaller footprint, consider the OtterBox 3-in-1 Charging Station, reviewed below. The MagSafe iPhone charger can angle and tilt by 35-degrees, and hold the device in either landscape or portraitso works well in iOS StandBy mode. The Watch charger is also tiltable and we like the way everything but the AirPods case is front-facing.The base charges at 7.5W and can be used to power up AirPods or a second iPhone, and the Watch part fast charges at 5W.If you prefer the Watch charger at the back and want an option in white, we like the Journey Trio Ultra 3-in-1 Fast Wireless Charging StationRead our full Twelve South HiRise 3 Deluxe review 5. You could pay half again for a full MagSafe 3-in-1 charger that offers the same 15W iPhone power. It too offers fast 15W iPhone wireless charging and 5W Apple Watch fast charging but in a coat-stand design that is sturdy and with iPhone and Watch facing the front. This differs from the ESR charger, which places a detachable Watch charger at the back. We prefer the Watch at the front so we can still interact with it, but it does make the stands base larger (5.5 inch diameter vs ESRs 3.7-inch square base).Neither the iPhone or Watch charging pad is tiltable. Alternatively you can charge the MacBook itself while it sits protected in the sleevefor this youll need a more powerfulMacBook charger.Read our full Journey NEXA 4-in-1 Laptop Sleeve with Wireless Charging review Why wireless?Wireless charging is convenient and fine for situations when you dont need a super-fast recharge. If youre leaving your home in 20 minutes and need as much juice as possible, plug in a cable (USB-C for iPhone 15 or later, or Lightning for earlier iPhones) as even a 12W USB charger can power up an iPhone a third faster than wireless, and 50% faster if you use a 20W USB-C PD charger.Wireless charging is less wearing than constantly inserting a cable into your phone, and more reliable as that vulnerable cable port can fill with fluff and dust after all the time spent in your trouser pocket or bag and its one of the most common reasons that an iPhone refuses to charge even when connected with a cable. Its easy to clean with a toothpick (but please do it softly!) but will affect most of us at some time. Read our tips about how to clear dirt and fluff from your iPhones charging port.Wireless charging isnt affected by the build-up of dust and fluff in the phone port and is also less vulnerable to oxidation and corrosion. With wireless, you dont have to remember to run around trying to find whos taken your charging cable, and its certainly a lot neater.Of course, wireless charging is not really wireless, unless you are using a portable magnetic power bank. The magnetic charger is still connected by a cable to your wall charger; its just the connection to the phone that is properly wireless. What else you needSome magnetic chargers come with their own wall charger, but most require you to add your own. Apple recommends at least a 20W USB-C power adapter (wall-socket charger) and we agree unless your charger supports 25W wireless charging, in which case go with at least a 30 USB-C charger. Except for the 25W Apple Charger and new Qi2 25W chargers you wont get over 15W charging power from a magnetic charger to the iPhone, so 20W all but guarantees youll get as much power as you can.We have tested the best iPhone wall chargers to help you choose a recommended solution.0 Comentários ·0 Compartilhamentos

Apples rumored cheap MacBook could be hiding in plain sightwww.macworld.comMacworldThe iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods Pro are having their rightful moment now, and the new products are very exciting. However, we Mac fans are patiently waiting our turnsure, we just got a round of new Macs this past March with the M4 MacBook Air and the Mac Studiobut that was six months ago! Mac aficionados are a ravenous bunch!Theres a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Apple often does one last product release for the year in the October/November timeframe before the holiday shopping season (sometimes with an event, sometimes not). That often includes new Macs, and this year weve heard a lot of rumors about a new, low-cost MacBook that is based on iPhone components. Now that we know the details on the new iPhones, we can use that information to piece together what this new MacBook could be like. To satiate our Mac cravings a bit, here are some ideas on the new cheap MacBook. The CPU: A18 Pro or A19 Pro?With the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, Apple introduced the A19 and A19 Pro chips. Apple said the A19 is faster and more efficient, presumably compared to the A18 it replacesApple actually didnt specify that. Apple also said the A19 Pro has a large cache and more memory than the A18 Pro, and that the A19 Pro-equipped iPhone 17 Pro with its best-ever thermal design offers a whopping 40 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 16 Pro and its A18 Pro chip and old thermal design. The A19 or A19 Pro seems like a tantalizing chip for the heart of the cheap MacBook, right? Hold that thought. The rumors have reported that the cheap MacBook will have an A18 Pro, the older chip that was just replaced in the Apple iPhone lineup, but those are early reports, and its likely that Apple will go with the newer A19 or A19 Pro. The A19 might be too new to be cost-effective for a cheap MacBook.AppleHowever, there is a line of reasoning in support of the A18 Pro. The A19 is a brand-new chip thats more expensive to produce, and Apples primary objective with the cheap MacBook is to make it as affordable as possible, even if that means sacrificing a bit of performance. The A18 is not as costlyits also likely that Apple has a supply of binned A18s (older chips that are missing a core or otherwise not up to the A18 specs) it could use.The way it could work is that Apple uses an A18-type chip for the initial release of the cheap MacBook. Then, over the next year, after the A19 has been in production for some time, it becomes cheaper to make, and binned versions are collected. Apple then upgrades the cheap MacBook next year with the A19, after the A20 has been introduced in the iPhone 18 lineup. Then the cycle repeats itself for the A20, A21, and so on.That may seem disappointing for MacBook customers, but its not! The A18 Pro offers multi-core performance similar to the M1, and its single-core speed is actually faster than the M3. Its a great chip and has the performance for a lot of general usage, the kind of tasks people who buy at this price point do.Efficency in the N1 chipApple introduced the new N1 chip in the iPhone 17 lineup. The N1 is a wireless networking chip for Bluetooth 6, Wi-Fi 7, and Thread, and Apple will probably use the N1 in the cheap MacBook. Since its a new chip, the cost to recoup development costs is likely high, but as a homegrown chip, it will be cheaper in the long run.The N1 is used for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread connectivity.AppleAdditionally, by using its own wireless networking chip, Apple gains engineering control not only in the chip itself, but how it is integrated in a device. That helps with performance and power efficiency.5G at lastThe C1X in the iPhone Air is the successor to the C1, Apples first cellular modem that was introduced in the iPhone 16e. The cheap MacBook (as well as future MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros) has been rumored to offer cellular connectivity, which would be provided by the C1X. (Apple could offer cellular connectivity not as a standard feature but as a customer option that costs extra.)Now, theres a possibility that Apple takes the older chip approach that it might do with the CPU and apply it here: use old C1 chips instead of the new C1X. However, since the C1 is a first-generation chip, Apple may be interested in moving on from itthe C1X is faster and more power efficient. Also, the iPhone 17e could be released in the spring of 2026, and that phone would have the C1X. If a C1 is used in a cheap MacBook, the C1s production would have to be extended until the next MacBook upgrade.Battery lifeThe iPhone 17, Apple Watches, and the AirPods Pro 3 introduced at the Awe Dropping event all feature improved battery life. Thats due to a combination of software optimizations and hardware improvements. Is there anything we can derive from this that could apply to the cheap MacBook? The battery improvements Apple made with the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 will make their way into the MacBooks.AppleWe can start by looking at the 13-inch MacBook Air, which Apple says offers up to 18 hours of video streaming. Apple will probably use that as a baseline for the cheap MacBook, which is rumored to have a 12.9-inch display, slightly smaller than the MacBook Airs 13.3-inch screen.Apple will want to at least match its new MacBooks battery life to the current MacBook Air, and would love to say that its longer. The efficiencies introduced in the just-announced products could allow Apple to do just that. The iPhone 17s camera takes Center StageThe best (or at least the one that will be used the most) new feature introduced in the iPhone 17 lineup is the 18MP Center Stage front-facing camera. It solves a lot of problems for using that particular camera, but those problems arent the same as the ones for MacBook users. I dont expect Apple to use this camera in this or any other MacBook, though Apple could use the new iPhone camera as a feature of its new MacBook. Since Apple likes to promote the Continuity Camera support in macOS, Apple could decide not to include a camera at all on the cheap MacBook in an effort to cut costs. Instead, it could advertise the iPhones camera as a feature of the new MacBook, maybe even supplying a built-in way to attach it to the MacBooks screenDont expect the 18MP Center Stage camera to come to any MacBook.FoundryA new color paletteApple offers the iPhone 17 in five different colors, but Apple is more likely to follow the iPhone 16es lead, which is available in just two colors, white and black. But what will Apple choose for its new MacBook? Black and sage? Deep blue and silver? Sky blue and light gold like the iPhone Air? Maybe Space Gray makes a comeback alongside Cosmic Orange? Now that would be something to see.More to comeWere bound to hear more about this new entry into Apples laptop lineup. We keep track of the latest reports and developments in our A18 Pro MacBook rumor roundup, so be sure to check it out to keep up with all the latest news.0 Comentários ·0 Compartilhamentos

macOS Gatekeeper review: How well does Apples free antivirus defend a Mac from malwarewww.macworld.comMacworldAt a glanceExpert's RatingProsmacOS Gatekeeper and XProtect functions work well together to block or quarantine the most obvious malware and throw up multiple warning prompts before harmful software can be installed.Good automatic cleanup, and in many cases, the Gatekeeper function quarantines and deletes suspect software, and even uninstalls fake copies of Adobe Flash Player.ConsWith enough determinationor carelessnessusers can override warnings and install malware that compromises core system functions.Questionable applications can be installed in the Applications folder with no warnings whatsoever.Risk to sensitive systems, such as your webcam, microphone, keystroke data, and other functions, should all warnings be ignored, and you continue to plow ahead and install malware. Our Verdict macOSs Gatekeeper and XProtect functions provide a strong baseline for security and block the vast majority of malware and questionable apps. Still, determined or careless users can bypass protections and grant dangerous levels of access to malware, placing your Macs data and functions at risk. For most users, these safeguards are enough, but a third-party security suite can also offer peace of mind.Price When ReviewedThis value will show the geolocated pricing text for product undefinedBest Pricing TodayWith the rise of third-party antiviral and anti-malware applications for the Mac, the question of how macOS defends against malware on its own has surfaced. To this end, is it safe to use macOS on its own and rely exclusively on macOS and security updates from Apple, or are you better off using a well-reviewed antiviral/anti-malware suite in conjunction with the native macOS layers of protection?Being somewhere between brave, curious, and outright idiotic, I backed up everything on my MacBook Pro as a Time Machine volume on my external hard drive, removed all third-party protection software, and then proceeded to run all of the Objective-See Mac Malware Collection across my operating system, throwing more than 130 chunks of questionable software at macOS 15.6.1 to see how things would hold up. The results were surprising. At the heart of the macOS security layer is its Gatekeeper system, which collaborates with its Xprotect feature to ensure that only certain applications have permission to run and/or install background functions on macOS. These security layers can be altered to allow for software thats been signed by developers or approved by the Mac App Store, macOS offering warnings galore through its Privacy and Security preference pane. For the most part, this works well; macOS often deletes suspect malware and moves it to the trash before it can be installed as the system scans it, along with throwing up warning messages after warning messages not to install the software, which it deems to be questionable. This is the good part, and the safeguards are in place, but the developers and the operating system also know they cant completely stand in the way of the users goals and that suspect software occasionally has to be installed and tested. As such, its still possible to bypass the warnings, execute questionable software, and install chunks of malware deep within macOS to become login items, background functions, and override core elements such as your web browsers search engine and start page.It got heady from there.Going through the malware archive and ignoring/bypassing protection screens, I was able to install third-party software that requested access to my microphone, webcam, keystrokes, and other system functions. During testing, I was allowed to install the NRKIH88 background function, which functions as a trojan; the infamous MacSecurity suite was installed and created background functions, and the LamePyre malware created a mock Discord app that requested permission to record audio and video data. By the end, my Safari start page had been compromised and switched to a website offering Viagra for sale.Although macOS works to keep malware from being installed and throws up warning message after warning message to try to prevent this from happening, its the native applications that the operating system allows to be installed in the Applications folder without batting an eye that can be disturbing. Apple attempts to verify if an app is safe. FoundryIn addition to two fake copies of Adobe Flash Player that were allowed to be installed (but, to macOS credit, automatically uninstalled later), the operating system allowed questionable software to be installed, such as MixPad, Free Download Manager, Wondershare, Movavi Screen Recorder (which allows full access to your photo libraries), Spedal, VideoPad, and borderline BitTorrent clients such as Vuze and Bigly BT. Granted, many of these applications have undergone updates over the years that took them out of consideration as malware, but the Gatekeeper system still allowed them to be copied into the Applications folder with no warning whatsoever. So whats the result of this? By the end of my testing, the MacSecurity suite was flashing notifications of viral infection and demanding to be registered, I had granted permission over core system functions to several questionable applications, and after seeing that my search engine and start page preferences had been altered, I was hesitant to log into anything sensitive, such as online banking or health insurance, and entirely glad that I had backed everything up so I could boot my MacBook Pro into Recovery Mode, wipe the drive several times, reinstall macOS Sequoia, reimport my data from Time Machine, and start over again.Apple warns you when an app wants to access areas of your Mac.FoundrymacOS Gatekeeper and XProtect systems fight the good fight and put up considerable resistance to malware infection, but its still entirely possible to bypass these protections and put some extremely questionable software on your Mac; it just takes a fair amount of effort to do so. Like deciding youre going to head to Home Depot, take off your shoes and socks as you walk over to the construction materials section, and then proceed to drop cinder blocks onto your bare feet over and over again for fun and amusement, its entirely possible to completely infect your Mac with dangerous malware provided you ignore all the warning signs and press ahead. The system will warn you about what an app tries to access.FoundryThis, coupled with how easy it is to install some questionable applications with no warning, gives one a bit of pause, but the native protection layer within macOS still holds its own, provided you heed the warnings and veer away from questionable software. In conclusion, macOS Gatekeeper function does its job, and does it well with a few exceptions, but theres nothing that can completely keep you from installing some of the worst software on the planet, designed by some of the most sociopathic developers on the planet to line their pockets, if your hearts set on it.That being said, Im REALLY glad I made that backup.Should you rely on Apples Gatekeeper antivirus protection? You cant argue with something thats free and part of macOS, and if youre the kind of Mac user who mostly sticks to the Mac App Store, trusted developer downloads, and pays attention to Apples warning prompts, macOS built-in protections are generally enough to keep you safe. There are safeguards in place that honestly do a great job of blocking or quarantining the most obvious malware and raising red flags before shady software can do real harm.Still, nothings entirely bulletproof, and in the face of an idiot-proof system, nature always finds a way to craft a greater idiot. You can still override every warning and offer over your camera, microphone, keystroke data, and core system settings to some of the sketchiest malware on Earth, and if you handle sensitive data, then a well-reviewed third-party antiviral or anti-malware tool can provide the safety net youre looking for, even if you have to pay for it. Finally, Time Machine is free. Hook up an external drive, use it, and it may just be the ticket back from the crash or viral infection that could have annihilated your work and driven you crazy.0 Comentários ·0 Compartilhamentos

Apple in discussions over folding iPhone test hubwww.macworld.comMacworldThis falls new iPhones arent yet on store shelvesthey officially go on sale todaybut the eyes of Apple pundits have already turned to the next generation. Specifically, to the first-ever foldable iPhone, which is tentatively expected to launch in 2026.Theres plenty of time for that to change before next fall. But the so-called iPhone Fold appears to have come a step closer to reality, with the news that Apple has spoken to suppliers in Taiwan about setting up a test production line for the device. Ultimately, this could lead to the folding iPhone being mass-produced in India, as Apple aims to reduce its reliance on Chinese manufacturing.According to Nikkei Asia, discussions have focused on the idea of building in Taiwan a mini pilot line that would verify the equipment and fine-tune the parameters and manufacturing steps for making a foldable iPhone. If successful, this line would be replicated at scale in India, shortening the learning curve and helping to ensure a smooth rollout. It would be reasonable at this point to feel skeptical. After all, were multiple speculative leaps away from a folding iPhone actually being launched: Apple isnt building a folding iPhone, nor even running test production ahead of building a folding iPhone. Its discussing the idea of setting up test production ahead of building a folding iPhone. When you put it like that, the idea sounds almost silly. But the story has some substance to it. For one thing, Nikkei cites three sources who are familiar with the talks rather than the traditional two. (And thats for reputable sites. Its by no means unknown for media outlets to publish a report based on only a single source.) For another, theres an impressive level of detail. The article mentions that the line would be built in a plot of land in a northern Taiwanese city and that it would need roughly a thousand operators. It also reports that Apple is looking to increase iPhone shipments by 10 percent next year, and that it expects a foldable model to spur demand.Apple has long been unhappy about relying on China-based suppliers for its enormous manufacturing operation. In the past this was principally because of human-rights concerns, but political tensions have become more of a factor since President Trump returned to the White House. For now the folding iPhone remains merely a rumor. But its believed that the iPhone Air was at one time intended to be a folding device, and that it remains a testbed for many features that will enable Apple to launch the first foldable iPhone in the following generation. It could of course be delayed yet again. But Apples plans in this regard will become clearer in 2026, and you can keep up with all the latest news and rumors in our regularly updated folding iPhone superguide.0 Comentários ·0 Compartilhamentos

IFA 2025: The best accessories we found for your iPhone, iPad, and Macwww.macworld.comMacworldThe massive IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin is the CES of Europe and is attended by even more people than the iconic Las Vegas event. Macworld walked the 27 halls for you to find the most interesting new Apple-related products, breezily ignoring Windows PCs and Nintendo Switch accessories. The new Qi 2.2 (or Qi2 25W as some are calling it) wireless charging technology was the star of the show at IFA when it comes to charging accessories. The new wireless charging tech takes speeds from the humdrum 7.5W and once-exciting 15W to a wired-charging-like 25W. It means you could charge an iPhone 16 to 50 percent in around 25 minutes (under ideal conditions). And it has to be an iPhone 16 or an upcoming iPhone 17 (running at least iOS 26) to get the benefit of the full 25W. Older iPhones can still use the new chargers, but at the old 15W charging pace.Simon JaryAukey MagFusion ArkAukey is calling its MagFusion Ark the worlds first modular true wireless charger, and its certainly got our attention. It looks like a set of speakers but consists of a long base with with three detachable 25W spheres, for a total of six charging points. It is truly wireless because MagFusion Ark integrates both Rx (receiving power) and Tx (transmitting power). When docked, the spheres wirelessly recharge from the base while simultaneously charging devices placed on them. When detached, they transform into portable 6700mAh power banks.MagFusion Ark will be available in Q1 2026. The flagship three-sphere base will be joined by one-device and two-device base options.Simon JaryAnker Prime Triple Display Docking StationThis 14-in-1 USB-C triple-display dock has a whopping 14 ports, including 140W upstream USB-C, three USB-C, three USB-A, dual HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, audio, and SD/TF slots. Compatible with DisplayLink software, the dock supports three displays (8K/4K/4K) on even the M1 and M2 MacBooks. It has a smart display of its own that shows real-time USB-C charging power, data transfer status, display signal, and temperature. It should cost $300 when it launches.Simon JaryESR Shift iPad Keyboard and CaseESR also had a busy IFA, with iPhone 17 versions of its popular cases, plus a raft of Qi2 25W chargers. iPads werent overlooked, with a couple of new cases and keyboards that caught our eye, including the flagship Shift Keyboard and Case. The keyboard has a fully responsive MacBook-like trackpad that can be detached from the case to allow for more ergonomic positioning (within 10 feet). It can be set up in three modes: 0-165-degree landscape, 70-degree portrait, and 20-degree for drawing.Simon JarySatechi OnTheGo rangeA more affordable iPad keyboard was shown by Satechi. Its Onthego Bluetooth keyboard is significantly less expensive than Apples or other solutions. Up to three devicesnot just iPads but iPhones, toocan be paired via Bluetooth. Its available in black and Sand colors that match the new OnTheGo Mac mice that join Satechis popular M1 Bluetooth mice.Satechi also showed off a wide range of products that work with Apples Find My app, including the usual luggage tags and key fobs but also passport covers and glasses case.Simon JaryUgreen MagFlow Magnetic Power BankUgreens MagFlow Magnetic Power Bank (available in 10000mAh and 20000mAh models) was one of the first Qi2 2.2-certified 25W products (starting at $89.99 / 79.99 / 89,99). It can power an iPhone 16 Pro Max to 50 percent in around 30 minutes, a speed that was previously reserved for less convenient cabled charging. Both models also include a handy built-in 30W USB-C cable that doubles as a carry strap.Ugreens MagFlow family includes desktop chargers and a range of nifty foldable travel chargers, all rated at 25W for the iPhone 16 and 17.Simon JaryiVanky FusionDock Max 2iVankys FusionDock Max stood out from the crowd with its dual Thunderbolt 4 chipsets, allowing for an unmatched number of Thunderbolt and other high-end ports. At IFA the company showed off its new 23-port FusionDock Max 2, which it claims is the only Thunderbolt 5 dock that enables native (not requiring any further software) triple-display on MacBook, with next-gen 120 Gbps transfer speeds, 140W fast charging, 2.5GbE, and 23 high-performance ports. With dual-chip powerThunderbolt 5 controller and a DPAlt chipMacBooks with an M-series Max processor could run three displays (2x 6K at 60Hz and 1x 4K at 60Hz) via two upstream connections to the dock.Simon JaryBaseus PicoGo AF21 3-in-125W Wireless ChargerThe Baseus PicoGo AF21 3-in-1 Wireless Charger also uses super-speedy Qi2 25W and unfolds Transformer-like from a tiny package into a clever multi-device charger for iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods. It looks quite different from other foldable 3-in-1 chargers and creates a solid but pocketable charging station.Baseus showed off a full range of 25W PicoGo chargers and magnetic power banks, plus an exciting new Inspire family of headphones and earbuds.Simon JaryAlogic Clarity 6K 32-inch Touch MonitorAlogic unveiled a large new range of monitors, but maybe most exciting is the Clarity 6K Touch, which is the worlds first 6K touchscreen for Mac (or Windows, for that matter). Joining the companys 27-inch Clarity 5K Touch, the new display boasts a larger 32-inch screen. Resolution of this Retina-quality display is an impressive 6016 x 3384 pixels, with 99 percent Adobe RGB/DCI-P3 colour accuracy and Avg. Delta E <1.10-point multitouch with full MPP 2.0 stylus compatibility creates something like a 32-inch iPad. It ships with Alogics innovative Fold Stand that can shift between upright mode and flat drafting-table mode. The Clarity 6K will be available from mid-October for $1,999.99/1,599.99/1,899.99.Simon JaryAlogic Omni Fold StandI said that Alogic used IFA to unveil a bunch of new products, and its new Omni Fold Stand includes an integrated docking groove that fits the M4 Mac mini. It is an option for the new 145W Aspekt UHD 4K Docking Monitor thats available in either touch and non-touch variants with anti-glare and gloss surface finish. Combined, the Aspekt monitor and Omni Stand effectively create an iMac-like 32-inch all-in-one. The Omni Fold monitor stands will be available from November 2025 for $329.99/249.99/299.99.Simon JaryBelkin Stage PowerGrip 10K Power BankBelkin released several tables worth of new products at IFA, including the Stage PowerGrip, a DSLR-style ergonomic grip for iPhone photography, that doubles up as a high-capacity 10000mAh power bank so you can keep taking pictures all day without the iPhones battery running flat. It also features a built-in retractable USB-C cable. It uses Bluetooth pairing to enable the shutter button on the top of the grip to let you take pictures via the iOS camera app.The company also showed off its many new IFA-announced 25W charging products, including the Belkin UltraCharge Pro 3-in-1 Magnetic Charging Dock exclusively reviewed by Macworld.0 Comentários ·0 Compartilhamentos

Weve got Apples full Awe Dropping iPhone 17 keynote right here*www.macworld.comMacworldIn just three days, Apple will hold a press event to announce its latest round of new products. Weve seen the artwork, weve read the tagline (Awe Dropping), and we can be pretty sure the iPhone 17 will make an appearance. But everything else is shrouded in mystery.Until now. Yes, thats right. Once again, Macworld sent a team of hard-bitten journalists to rummage through the bins at Apple Park, and once again, they hit pay dirt: the full presentation script, storyboards, rehearsal tapes, props, costumes, one of those old-timey movie clapperboards, and several half-eaten sandwiches. Weve eaten the sandwiches and used the rest to painstakingly construct a minute-by-minute simulation of the iPhone 17 launch event, which you can enjoy below.Just to be 100 percent clear, this isnt real. Our script is based on detailed analysis of credible leaks and rumors, with a few (hopefully obvious) jokes mixed in. Please dont send in any more angry emails.Introductory guff09:58 a.m.: Were live! The pre-stream is up and running. If youre thinking the music sounds familiar, its Platitude Queen by Onion Terror. Which of course was used earlier this year in the opening credits of Apple TV+s gritty remake of Keeping Up Appearances. What a triumphant performance that was from Margot Robbie.10:00: The stream proper begins. Cut to a darkened city street. A young woman is jogging from streetlight to streetlight, glancing periodically at the workout stats on her Apple Watch Ultra. (Is that a bigger watch, or a small actress?) You can do this! the watch says, surprisingly. Just one mile to go. Vitals steady. Plenty of energy left. Youre on track to beat your personal best!10:02: A middle-aged man on a graffitied subway train taps his AirPods. Adjusting audio, it says. Blocking out the annoying guy next to you. Now hes in a restaurant. Translating from Cantonese, the headphones report, and he begins to order.10:04: An elderly woman takes out her iPhonewhich is in a case, so its hard to get a clear view of the designand summons Siri. Has there ever been a boy born who can swim faster than a shark? she asks. Still no, Siri replies wearily.10:06: And now the camera is flying through the clouds above Apple Park. It swoops down, and there, standing in front of the familiar rainbow sculpture, is Apple CEO Tim Cook. Good morning! he says. Weve got a fantastic show for you today.10:07: Apple products make the world a better place, Cook trills. They play a vital role at work and in our free time. They help us to improve our health and stay in touch with loved ones. They put the worlds knowledge at our fingertips. And they deliver sustainable shareholder value by hitting high-margin KPIs going forward.10:09: Todays event is going to focus on three areas, Cook says: iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods. To talk us through the exciting changes coming to iPhone, its over to Kaiann.FoundryiPhone 1710.10: Kaiann Drance, Apples VP of iPhone product marketing, has got the big gig once again, after presenting the iPhone 16 last year. Shes standing next to a colossal iPhone box and looks alarmingly enthusiastic.10:11: Thanks Tim, great to be here, she says. Im super-excited to talk about iPhone! After last years thrilling iPhone 16 launch we sat down and asked ourselves one question: whats the absolute minimum we could change and still have people upgrade their phones, thereby maintaining a sustainable long-term revenue stream?10:12: And today Im proud to reveal the answer to that question! Please welcome iPhone 17: Another Year Has Passed.10:13: Time for a marketing video! And were seeing the new iPhone in all its glory. Which largely fits with the leaked images weve been bombarded with for the past three months: theres a handsome new purple finish (here we go again; Apple tried purple on the iPhone 12 and 14, then gave up on the color for a while), the blue model is much paler, and pink has vanished altogether (boo!). But the essence of the design appears the same: the two rear camera lenses, for example, remain in the same vertical alignment as on the iPhone 16.10:14: iPhone 17 is our best ever iPhone, Drance says smugly. We took everything you loved about iPhone 16 and made it fractionally better. Our brand-new A19 processor delivers market-leading performance on even the most demanding apps, while an upgraded 24MP front-facing camera ensures the sharpest selfies youve ever seen.10:16: And as for the screen goodness me, what a transformation! For the first time ever on a non-Pro iPhone, were offering an always-on display, but thats not all. All of this months new iPhones have LTPO screens with a stunning 120Hz rate and our popular ProMotion feature, so you can look forward to buttery-smooth animation while maintaining our usual exceptional battery life.10:18: Pre-orders for the iPhone 17 are open now, and it will ship on September 19. Prices start at $799 for the 128GB model, which is the same as the entry-level iPhone 16 last year. Evidently Apple managed to shrug off the effects of the tariffs, at least for now. Thats good news.10:19: Thats iPhone 17. We think youre going to love it.iPhone 17 Pro (and 17 Pro Max)10.20: Drance is sticking around, and were heading straight into the iPhone 17 Pro. No mention so far of the rumored iPhone 17 Air, but its a bit of a giveaway that the iPhone 17 was only shown in a single screen size. Presumably the Air will be announced later?10:21: Apples Pro series of iPhones are the industry standard for premium smartphone design, Drance says. In fact, they make even our standard iPhones look like disgusting trash. Needless to say, talking about the pathetic iPhone 17 just now was a real ordeal for me. So Im excited to announce iPhone 17 Pro.10:23: Were seeing the new handsets now. Most obviously, the rear camera module has been heavily redesigned: its now a broad bar that covers almost the full width of the phones back surface. (The camera lenses themselves, conversely, look the same.) And here too were seeing new color options, with the Pro models available in a startling new orange and a far more somber dark blue as well as the usual black, white, and gray. And is that a smaller Dynamic Island?10:25: Were talking performance. Is the 17 Pro getting a bump from 8GB to 12GB of RAM, as rumoured? Apple tends to be cagey about such things. iPhone 17 Pro is so powerful youll literally faint when you see it, says Drance, unhelpfully. The A19 Pro chip is faster than a peregrine falcon, which is the fastest animal on earth.10:26: Many people think its the cheetah, she adds. But its not.10:27: Camera performance should see a significant improvement. Aside from getting the same 24MP selfie camera as the iPhone 17, the 17 Pros telephoto lens has been bumped to a whopping 48MP, up from the 12MP lens on the 16 Pro. That means superior zoom performance, Drance says the Pro models now have a 7x optical zoom before the digital version kicks in.10:29: Heres an interesting change: the iPhone 17 Pro gets a mechanical aperture, which means you can customize the amount of light allowed through. This means an unprecedented level of control over the depth of field, Drance boasts. We dont know how this will work in practice, but on the Huawei Mate 50 Pro, you can choose from 10 steps between f/1.4 and f/4.0 or, as most of us will inevitably do, just leave the camera in auto mode.10:31: The iPhone 17 Pro has an industry-leading battery and will last you for a scarcely conceivable single day of usage before needing a charge. And charging is now faster than ever, thanks to a huge upgrade to MagSafe. Its been bumped from a maximum 25W to 50W, although this will depend on having a compatible charging puck (and power adapter) as well as the iPhone 17 Pro. You may just find a bottleneck in a different part of your charging setup.10:33: Were rattling through the iPhone 17 Pros other upgrades now. The screen has a new anti-glare finish (ahead of the event, we heard this was also going to be scratch-resistant, but perhaps Apple wants to avoid any references to its phones getting damaged). And theres a new Apple-designed Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip, which Drance says will improve power efficiency.10:35: Thats iPhone 17 Pro: Anything Else Is Repulsive. We think youre going to love it. It comes out on September 19 and starts at oh wow, its $1,199 for the cheapest 17 Pro, a crazy $200 bump on last years model! Granted, you get twice as much storage (the 128GB model has been phased out), but still. The 17 Pro Max starts at $1,299, which is $100 more than the equivalent 16 Pro Max last year. This is a lot to take in.New Apple Watches10:36: Tim Cook is back. Thanks Kaiann! Were excited for you all to try out the new iPhone 17 range, which we expect to deliver profitable synergy in key market verticals and boost our customer retention analytics. Now on to Apple Watch, and for the last time, its over to Jeff.10:37: Wow, its Jeff Williams! Williams stepped down as Apple COO at the end of July, but he remains with the company until his retirement later this year. Clearly Cook persuaded him to do one last keynote before heading out the door. The man seems emotional: hes taken off his shoes and one of his socks.10:38: Thanks Tim, he says, visibly moved. You know, customers come up to me, big customers, tall customers, tears running down their customer faces, and they say, Jeff, the Apple Watch Series 10 is the greatest smartwatch in the world! How can you possibly top that?! And I say, were looking into that very strongly.10:39: So today, were proud to announce Apple Watch Series 11.10:40: Video time! And the new watch looks exactly the same as the Series 10 from last year. No new colors: it looks to again be available in black, silver, and rose gold, plus the dark and light titanium finishes. Still, you know. It looks nice. Its fine.10:42: Apple Watch is the most popular health device in the world, says Williams. It saves lives every day, and helps our customers to improve their fitness. And from today, those health benefits will become even more essential.10:44: The Series 11 has a new sensor that enables blood-pressure tracking, which could be pretty crucial in unlocking a range of new health featuresnot least the ability to detect hypertension and thereby predict strokes and heart attacks more accurately.10:46: The new Apple Watch also gets a new S11 processor, inevitably, although the actual benefits of that are unclear. (Ever found your Apple Watch slow? Didnt think so. Plus, pre-launch reports indicated that the S11 is essentially just a rebadged S10.) Whereas its upgrade to 5G connectivity is a nice surprise.10:48: Oh, were done. Thats Apple Watch Series 11. We think youre going to love it. It starts at $399 and will appear in stores starting September 19.10:50: Weve suddenly cut to yet another marketing video. Based on the colorsblue, yellow, pinkand general vibe, its surely a new SE model.10:52: Were proud to announce Apple Watch SE 3, says Cook. You know, for kids.10:53: The SE has been completely redesigned. Its made of plastic, and comes in a variety of bright colors. The display is bigger (up from 40/44mm to 41/45mm) to match the old Series 7 rather than the Series 5 which the last SE was based on. It also gets the S11 chip.10:55: The new Apple Watch SE starts at $249. Thats the same price as the previous model, with the extra cost of the larger screen and the economies of using plastic presumably cancelling each other out.Old news: The Apple Watch Ultra 2.Jim Martin / Foundry10:57: Were on to the Ultra now. And theres a slight redesign here: namely, a larger screen. Customers told us they loved the big, bright display on Apple Watch Ultra, but wondered if it could be even bigger? So were proud to announce that this years Ultra has 5 percent more screen real estate!10:59: The official line is that the screen size has increased from 49mm to 50mm. We understand that the resolution has gone up from 410502 to 422514, which is indeed 5.39 percent more pixels. And Williams insists the watch itself is no larger, thanks presumably to slimmer bezels around the screen.11:00: The Ultra 3, unsurprisingly, also gets the same upgrades as the Series 11: the S11 chip, 5G, and the new blood-pressure monitor.11:01: And were wrapping up for this section. Thats Apple Watch Ultra 3, says Williams. We think youre going to love it. It starts at $799 and will appear in stores on September 19. Its nice that the watches have escaped the price bump that hit the Pro iPhones.AirPods Pro 311:03: Were back to Tim Cook, who wipes a tear and does that namaste thing hes so fond of. Thanks Jeff, and enjoy retirement! he says. And now, on to AirPods.11:04: AirPods stand for all that is great about Apple, he says. They are beautifully designed, supremely functional, and capable of sustaining high-margin profitability across key demos in challenging market conditions. For more AirPods news, its over to Kate.11:06: Thanks Tim! says Kate Bergeron, Apples VP of hardware engineering. (She announced new AirPods at the Glowtime event last year.) Lets talk AirPods Pro.Want a slimmer case? Youll want the AirPods Pro 3.Foundry11:07: Its video time, and were watching the new AirPods Pro swooping and floating around an abstract landscape. First things first, Apple hasnt removed the stems to match the Beats Studio Buds, as was rumored for some time. Its not a radical redesign, then. But there are some other noticeable changes: the buds now seem more streamlined, the charging case is a different shape, and theyre available in black!11:10: We know that the convenient, slimline charging case is one of the things you love most about AirPods Pro, Bergeron says, not unreasonably. So we decided to make it even better. Confirmation that the new case is slimmer, much like the AirPods 4 case, and is paired by simply tapping the case rather than having a dedicated pairing button. And theres no lanyard loop! Sad.11.12: On to the earbuds themselves, which are getting a ton of new features. (This is what happens when you dont properly update a product for three years.) It has a new H3 chip. There are heart-rate and temperature sensors. And, as rumored, it supports live translation!11.14: AirPods Pro deliver industry-leading audio quality, Bergeron says, and thats truer than ever with the new third-generation model. Youll feel like youre in the room with your favorite artists thanks to the exceptional immersion of Spatial Audio.11.15: Active Noise Cancellation has been upgraded, too. It will filter out all the background noises you want to avoid, Bergeron says, but with the latest version of Adaptive Audio, you can be as selective as you like.11.16: Thats AirPods Pro 3. We think youre going to love it. Looks like this section (and perhaps the presentation?) is finished. The device starts at $249 and ships on September 19. Oh, but hang on: Bergeron just added that the live translation feature will arrive later in the, or a, year. It must have been delayed. One more thing11:18: Cook is back. Thanks Kate, and thanks to all of our presenters tonight, he says. Were excited for you to experience all these great products and boost our Q1 top-line revenue performance in line with analyst expectations. And in the end, isnt that what technology is all about?11.19: But before we go, theres just One More Thing Id like to discuss11.20: Video time. Ah, this must be the iPhone 17 Air at last. And what a beauty it is. Its just breathtakingly slim. People are going to love this thing (although they may not love the compromises it comes with).Majin Bu/X11:22: The 17 Air is wildly different from the other models in the range. Aside from being just 5.5mm thick, it has only one camera lens on the rear (inside an oddly broad module) and another on the front. Those are decent cameras, mind you: 24MP on the front, and 48MP on the rear.11:24: It also has its own set of colors: the standard black and white, plus a light blue that, for some reason, is lighter than the one on the iPhone 17, and a light gold that doesnt appear anywhere else in the current range.11:26: No word on the battery capacity, but it must be far, far less than on the other models. Cook only says the Air will last for a full day. Thats not very reassuring.11:27: If youre worried about a repeat of Bendgate, its at least clear that Apple has taken that threat seriously. The Air has a titanium-aluminum alloy metal frame for added strength. (Plus, the even more slender iPad Pro which launched last year doesnt seem prone to bending, so theres that.)11:29: iPhone 17 Air delivers industry-leading performance in an unprecedentedly slimline package, Cook boasts. What that means, apparently, is the A19 processor rather than the A19 Pro (and reportedly a slower GPU, although Apple wont confirm that at this point).11:31: This is iPhone 17 Air: Oh God Why?, says Cook. We think youre going to love it. It starts at $1,099. Oof! Thats a lot for a phone that really isnt Pro-specced. Although it does get 256GB of storage as a minimum.11:32: And that really is your lot. Cook thanks the presenters once again, then does a celebratory backflip. Stay classy, Cupertino!Apples Awe Dropping event is set for September 9, 2025. Want to know what to expect? 5 iPhone 17 rumors Apple just confirmed in its Awe Dropping event invitewww.macworld.comMacworldApple has officially announced its Awe Dropping special event for September 9, where well officially meet the iPhone 17 lineup. As usual, the company didnt reveal anything beyond the date and tagline, but the invitation artwork and Apples history of easter eggs give us a few strong hints about whats coming. Here are five takeaways from Apples event invite that just might confirm details about the iPhone 17 and beyond.A jaw-dropping iPhone design is comingThis years tagline, Awe Dropping, seems to tease something visually striking, jaw-dropping if you will. For months, rumors have pointed to Apple introducing a new, ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air model to replace the unpopular Plus model. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to mark the most radical change in iPhone design since the iPhone X and kick off a three-year-long iPhone overhaul. If Apple really wants to drop jaws, a radically thinner design certainly fits the bill. The Apple event invite all but confirms the iPhone 17 color options.FoundryThe iPhone 17 lineup will have bold new color optionsAs reported exclusively by Macworld, Apple has planned many new colors for the iPhone 17 models, ranging from a new iPhone 17 Pro in orange to various shades of blue. If you werent certain of the new colors before, the event invitation artwork appears to be a clear confirmation that the rumors are right.According to our sources, both the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will be available in a light shade of blue. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will come in dark blue and orange. More traditional colors, such as black and white, are also expected.Well, the Apple logo shown in the event artwork essentially features all the new colors we mentioned, which is a pretty clear sign that these are indeed the new colors for the iPhone 17 lineup. So you can start figuring out which one you want now.The iPhone 17 Pro is getting new cooling systemAccording to rumors, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature a new vapor chamber cooling system to keep the device at an optimal temperature even when running intensive activities such as games. This not only ensures greater comfort when holding the phone in your hand but also helps to sustain peak performance.Interestingly, if you watch the Apple logo animation in the artwork, it looks suspiciously like a heat map, with shades of intense red and cool blue swirling around the edges. Could this be Apple confirming the new cooling system for the iPhone 17 Pro models? Will the iPhone 17 get new dynamic wallpaper?FoundryNew colorful wallpapers are comingSometimes, Apples event artwork means only one thing: new wallpapers. And that may be the case this year. For instance, the stylized Apple logo created to promote the September 2023 event was based on the wallpaper shipped with the iPhone 15 Pro.Perhaps this years iPhones will feature dark wallpapers with a heat map effect, or swirling blue and orange. Or something interactive like the image on Apple.com. Go try it outmove your finger, mouse, or Apple Pencil over the Apple logo and the colors will morph and mingle with your movements.iOS 26 and Liquid Glass are a big dealSpeaking of the interactive event logo, as you drag your finger around, its hard not to see that the effect looks a lot like what happens when you swipe your finger across Liquid Glass elements in iOS 26.Apple typically releases new versions of iOS to the public the week after its September event, and this year should be no different. Perhaps the invite is nothing more than a tease for the new interface coming to everyones iPhones in a few weeks. In fact, just this week, Bloombergs Mark Gurman reported that Liquid Glass is more than just a 2025 redesign. Its the start of a 3-year iPhone supercycle that will include a new folding phone and culminate with the launch of the 20th anniversary iPhone in 2027. That phone is expected to have curved glass that mimics the evolution of the Liquid Glass interface over the next three years. So Apple would definitely want to draw attention to Liquid Glass now.AppleMark your calendarsApples invites are always carefully designed, and this one is no exception. From new colors to the heat-map-like cooling teaser, theres a lot hiding in plain sight. Well know for sure on September 9, but if history is any guide, Apple just gave us a pretty good preview of whats coming.Of course, Macworld will have full coverage leading up to the keynote as well and all through the event. So stay tuned!

How to connect two or more external displays to an M1, M2, M3 or M4 MacBookwww.macworld.comMacworldWhile the higher-end MacBooks with M1/M2/M3/M4 Pro and Max chips support multiple external displays, Apples lower-end range of MacBooks that use a standard M1 and M2 processor cannot natively connect more than one external monitor, and to do so the M3 has to have its lid closed. This is a massive limitation compared to the previous Intel-based generation of Mac laptops that could run two displays when connected to a USB-C or Thunderbolt docking station or hub.Apples M3 MacBook Air models support two external monitors but only if the MacBook has its lid closed in what is known as Clamshell Mode. The M3 MacBook Pro supports a similar feature if at least the macOS Sonoma 14.6 update is installed. We explain how to run dual external displays on an M3 MacBook in a separate article. The solutions below, however, allow for more than two external displays on plain M1, M2 and M3 Macs with their lids open if you want it. The plain M4 MacBook Air and Pro models do natively support two displays with the lid open but if you want three displays for these MacBooks, then keep reading. There have also been reports that the M3 MacBook Air with lid closed suffers significant performance decline due to heat build up, so following our advice below still has relevance even for M3 MacBook Air and Pro users who want to hook up to multiple displays and keep their Mac purring at full speed.Later, we list our tested and recommended software and hardware solutions for adding more than one display to the plain M1, M2 and M3 Macs. You can jump straight to our list of the best DisplayLink docks if you know all about DisplayLink. If not, read on a while. The solutions we explain here will also help plain M4 users and M2/M3/M4 Pro MacBook users extend to three external displays. Here are the external display specs for Apples current laptops, and what our workarounds can offer:M1 MacBook Air, M2 MacBook Air and M2 MacBook Pro: Maximum one external displayread our workarounds below for up to five displays.M3 MacBook Air, M3 MacBook Air and M3 MacBook Pro: Maximum two external displays if MacBook lid is closed. Four or more using our workarounds.M2 Pro MacBook Pro and M3 Pro MacBook Pro: Maximum two external displays. Four or more using our workarounds.M4 MacBook Air, M4 MacBook Pro and M4 Pro MacBook Pro: Maximum two external displays. Three or more using our workarounds, or five using DisplayLink on certain docks.M2 Max MacBook Pro, M3 Max MacBook Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pro: Maximum four external displays. Five using DisplayLink on certain docks. However, there are ways around these plain M1/M2/M3 limitations, allowing you to run two or more external displays off your MacBook, which we will outline here. In each case, theres a software download and a docking station, hub or adapter required. The simplest solution is to get a USB graphics-enabled docking station or hub, sometimes called a DisplayLink Dockand weve reviewed the best ones later in this article. USB graphics is a software-based technology (DisplayLink or InstantView) that compresses the video signals from the computer to the monitor, enabling you to connect multiple external displays to your M1, M2 or M3 MacBook.Installing third-party software drivers leads to a slight risk that these might later be unsupported by future updates of the macOS, but the two drivers we recommend are recognized industry standards that we believe will continue to be supported and have been for a number of years already. We therefore can recommend these solutions that have worked for a numbe rof years without problems.External displays: Big problem for M1, M2 and some M3 MacsIf your MacBook setup includes running more than one external display, you have a major problem: Apples basic (non-Pro or Max) M1 and M2 chips simply wont allow itat least natively. Apple states in the M1 or M2 MacBook Air and M3 MacBook Pro tech specs that they support only one external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz.FoundryWhile the M1 and M2 MacBooks natively support just one monitor, the M1 and M2 Mac Mini does natively support up to two external monitorsone via the HDMI port and a second via USB-C. But the M1 and M2 models of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro (plus the M3 MacBook Pro) support only a single external display over Thunderbolt. The M3 MacBook Air models (13- and 15-inch) were the first to support more than one external displayas long as you close the laptops lid (known as Clamshell Mode) to allow for the second external display. 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro has a similar limitation. The first display (allowing an open MacBook lid) has a maximum 6K resolution at 60Hz. The second display (requiring the closed lid) can be up to 5K at 60Hz.The M4 MacBook Air and 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro escape the single-display limit even with its lid open, but if you want more than two displays for that model, you need a DisplayLink dock.We cover the basics of how to connect your Mac to an external monitor.Workaround: Install DisplayLink software driversYou can use a combination of display technologies to get around the M1/M2/M3 MacBooks single-monitor limitation. DisplayLink is the most common software solution that you pair with a compatible dock, and SiliconMotions InstantView is another. Note that the docks need to state DisplayLink or InstantView compatibilityyou cant just install DisplayLink drivers and hope they work with regular docks and hubs. Here, well refer to them all as DisplayLink docks for brevity.DisplayLink enable adapters or docks to output video over USB ports that would otherwise support only data connections, bypassing limitations on the number of screens a Mac can support natively (for example, the single-display limitation on base M1, M2, or M3 Macs). Many multi-display docks use a combination of native USB-C Alternate Mode (native Alt Mode video output) and DisplayLink technology. This combination serves as a workaround to the M1/M2/M3 platform supporting only a single external display via USB-C.Note that DisplayLink requires a third-party driver to be installed on the Mac. In general, setup is straightforward. Some of the docks we review below offer the DisplayLink software when you first connect the dock to your Mac. The DisplayLink macOS app or DisplayLink Manager app are ways of enabling DisplayLink technology on macOS. The app is available as a standalone installer rather than through the mac App Store. The initial InstantView setup is easier than DisplayLink with the hubs from Hyper and Satechibut it suffers the same challenge that Apples software updates could disable it, which will entail installing a newer version and allowing the necessary security & privacy settings for screen recording, just as with DisplayLink. You can download the latest version of InstantView software here. The latest version supports macOS 15 Sequoia, 14 Sonoma, 13 Ventura and 12 Monterey.Neither software solution is complicated and both worked well in our tests as you can read below. This docking station supports three external displays via DisplayLink, while still allowing the MacBook to show its independent screen.1. First, download the latest Mac DisplayLink driver. As stated above, some docks, do this for you but its always best to use the latest version.DisplayLink Manager Graphics Connectivity App v. 13 is compatible with macOS Ventura 13, Sonoma 14 and Sequoia 15. For macOS Monterey 12, you need version 1.11; for Big Sur 11, look for version 1.9, and v1.5 for Catalina 10.15. It can be managed via the DisplayLink icon in the Apple Menu bar.Heres the one fiddly part: you need to enable Screen Recording to allow the DisplayLink Manager app to capture pixels and send them to your USB peripheral. This can be found in System Preferences under Privacy in Security & Privacy; navigate to Screen Recording in the list on the left, then tick the Screen Recording permission for DisplayLink Manager after unlocking the padlock using your admin password. You may need to quit and restart DisplayLink Manager afterward. Dont worry, DisplayLink isnt recording your screenthis just lets it do its magic enabling multiple screens.Installation is straightforward; take a look at the instructions here. Older versions did not support laptops closed-display/Clamshell Mode, but 1.8.1 and later do support Clamshell Mode if the MacBook is running macOS 11 or later.Theres an option in DisplayLink manager to launch at startup, or you can drag the DisplayLink Manager to your Login Items in Users & Groups.2. Then connect the MacBook to a DIsplayLink docking stationthe dock must support DisplayLink, as all the reviewed products listed below do.3. For the first screen you can connect via the docks DisplayPort, HDMI or USB-C/Thunderbolt port, and this will be handled natively by the M1/M2 MacBook. If you need to, you can use a USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort adapter. The HDMI or DisplayPort output uses Alternate Mode (Alt Mode), and as it is basically a pipeline directly to the systems native GPU, it will behave just like if you hooked up a USB-C to HDMI dongle to your laptop. This requires no user driver installation. The second and third displays will rely on the DisplayLink software. DisplayLink uses an installed driver and the system CPU and GPU to convert graphics data on the system into data packets. That data is then sent over the cable as data packets and converted back to video information and output to the monitors via the DisplayLink chip in the docking station.Which dock is best?A docking station connects to your MacBook via Thunderbolt or USB-C. It then offers multiple ports that your laptop now has access to. These can include new display ports, such as HDMI, as well as Ethernet for wired Internet access, USB-C/Thunderbolt/USB-A ports at varying speeds, audio plugs, and card readers. A simpler hub or adapter has fewer ports but may have all the video or USB ports required. The main thing to remember here is that the dock, hub or adapter needs to support either DisplayLink or InstantView for the extra multi-screen magic to work. Non-DisplayLink docking stations are great if your MacBook can handle the number of screens you desire but you need more ports and functionality.Docking station and hub manufacturers are now actively marketing their products as solutions to the M1/M2/M3 external display limitationdocks have to support DisplayLink to work with the software. All the docks and hubs reviewed below require either the DisplayLink download or another similar software solution, such as InstantView, but no further hardware adapter except for the dock or hub itself. And of course, these hubs offer the usual multi-port benefits as well as the external monitor solution. The best multiscreen hubs and adapters for M1, M2, M3 and M4 MacBooksBelow we have gathered the best dedicated hubs and docks for multiscreen M1/M2/M3/M4. Note that most of these listed (and tested) below use USB-C rather than Thunderbolt, so dont benefit from the MacBooks potential pro-level 40-80Gbps data bandwidth but are usually cheaper. If you require bandwidth higher than 10Gbps, go for a DisplayLink-supporting Thunderbolt dock.We have tested DisplayLink docks that can support up to five external displays and some that max out at two, which we expect will be plenty enough screen space for most people. You can use a five-screen DisplayLink dock even if you need only two monitors, and use the spare ports for other purposes.Plugable 5 Display USB-C Dock (UD-7400PD) five 4K displays at 60Hz ProsSupports up to five external displays at 4K 60Hz3x 8K at 60Hz displays11 ports2x HDMI video ports140W PD laptop charging2.5Gb EthernetConsNo SD card readerNorth America onlyBest Prices Today: Connection: USB-C (10Gbps)Software: DisplayLinkMax screens: 5Lets begin with the DisplayLink dock that supports the most external displays: the Plugable UD-7400PD allows even M1 MacBook users to run up to five 4K displays at a 60Hz refresh rate. This is made possible by use of the latest Synaptics DisplayLink DL-7400 chipset. No other dock can match it. Although five displays is probably overkill for most users, financial and data analysts cant have enough screens and will love it. You dont have to add five displays, of course, but this dock is the one that will let you do so.There are two HDMI ports (one HDMI 2.1 for 8K and one 2.0) plus three downstream USB-C ports to connect either those displays or other devices. There are two fast 10Gbps USB-A ports, speedy 2.5Gb Ethernet and an audio jack, but no SD card reader. At the front of the dock, one of the USB-C ports can output power to a connected device at 30W, which is perfect if you want to fast-charge an iPhone or even an iPad.If you need faster bandwidth, the Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Docking Station with DisplayLink (reviewed below) boasts 40Gbps data transfer and supports four displays for the M3 MacBook Air (while shut in Clamshell Mode), but with it the M1 and M2 MacBooks are limited to three (one at 6K and two at 4K).IT managers will appreciate Plugables DockTagtechnology that works with the UD-7400PD, a web-based solution designed for hot-desking and real-time IT asset management in mixed-platform offices.Read our full Plugable 5 Display USB-C Dock (UD-7400PD) review Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Docking Station with DisplayLink three 4K displays at 60Hz for M1/M2, four for M3/M4 ProsSupports up to four external displays at 4K 60HzOne display at 6K 60Hz11 ports, inc. three 40Gbps Thunderbolt 42x HDMI 2.0 video portsSpeedy SD card reader96W laptop charging and 180W power supplyConsOnly three displays for M1/M2U.K. users need local power cableBest Prices Today: $299.99 at SatechiConnection: Thunderbolt 4 (40Gbps)Software: DisplayLinkMax screens: 4While plain M1 and M2 MacBooks are limited to three external displays using this dock when DisplayLink software is installed, M3/M4 and M1/M2/M3/M4 Pro/Max MacBooks can connect to four 4K at 60Hz.Other docks reviewed here also allow M1 and M2 Macs to connect to three displays, but what we really like about the Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Docking Station with DisplayLink is right there in its name: its a full Thunderbolt 4 dock rather than USB-C. It therefore offers 40Gbps data-transfer rates compared to the 10Gbps that youll find on most of the other docks reviewed here. The Plugable TBT-6950PD, reviewed below, is very similar to this Satechi dock. That Thunderbolt port connection also allows one of the three screens to be at 6K resolution (60Hz) while the other two via HDMI will be 4K at 60Hz.There are two HDMI 2.0 ports plus a generous three downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports (as well as one upstream TB4 to the laptop). It doesnt host any extra USB-C ports but the three Thunderbolt 4 ports (40Gbps data transfer, 15W power output) are backwards compatible with USB-C. There are two fast 10Gbps USB-A ports, too, plus a UHS-II SD card reader, Gigabit Ethernet and an audio jack.Non-Pro/Max M3 and M4 Macs can connect to four displays using this dock, as long as the laptops lid is closed (clamshell mode). Its also a great option for M1/M2/M3/M4 Pro users usually restricted to two external displays.U.K. customers can buy direct from Satechi (with a small shipping fee) but will need to purchase a local power cable.Satechi also sells a 12-port USB-C-based Triple 4K Display Docking Station that supports three 4K displays at 60Hz using DisplayLink. It is priced the same as the Satechi Thunderbolt DisplayLink Dock. Normally wed always pick a Thunderbolt dock over USB-C but this one hosts a mix of DisplayPort and HDMI ports that offers a more flexible monitor choice than the Thunderbolt docks two HDMI and three TB4 ports. If you prefer DisplayPort for your monitor connection you should consider this USB-C dock although a simple USB-C to DisplayPort adapter will work the same magic on the TB dock. Its more than a mere display adapter, though, as it also boasts USB-C PD passthrough charging at up to 85W, one 5Gbps USB-C port, and two 5Gbps USB-A ports.Although named after the M1 processor, it will also work with similarly limited M2 and M3 MacBooks.Alogic Dual 4K Universal Compact Docking Station two 4K displays at 60Hz ProsSupports two external displays at 4K 60Hz7 ports, inc. 10Gbps USB-C and USB-AHDMI and DisplayPort versions78W laptop chargingConsRequires USB-C chargerBest Prices Today: Connection: USB-C (10Gbps)Software: DisplayLinkMax screens: 2The Alogic Dual 4K Universal Compact Docking Station comes in two modelsthe CH2, which features two HDMI 2.0 ports; and the CD2, with two DisplayPort portsso you can choose which best suits the external displays you already own.Two external screens are probably enough for most people. This doesnt mean you can connect six displays but it does should give you flexible options for the type of connection that fit your displays. However, in testing we had no success linking via DisplayPort, which makes the extra options rather worthless. As such, we prefer the other docks and hubs reviewed above. You need to download the DisplayLink drivers for your M1/M2/M3 Mac. StarTech.com has a link and a video, or just follow our guide above. As well as the half-dozen video ports are six USB ports: 2x USB-C (one at 10Gbps and one 5Gbps), plus 4x USB-A (one 10Gbps and three 5Gbps). The 5Gbps USB-C port can charge a connected device at 18W, enough to fast-charge an iPhone. One of the 5Gbps USB-A ports can charge at 7.5W.Rounding off the many ports are Gigabit Ethernet and a 3.5mm Audio In-Out.Theres no card reader to add portable storage but you could connect an adapter to one of the USB ports.Workaround caveatsWhenever there is a new OS update DisplayLink and InstantView drivers may need to be updated each time.Plugable doesnt recommend the workaround for gaming, video editing, digital audio workstations (DAWs), and protected content (HDCP) playback. For these workloads, users will want the full throughput of a bare-metal native GPU connectionsuch as provided by the DisplayPort or HDMI port on the dock using Alt Mode.CalDigit actively recommends against using DisplayLink, as it finds it unreliable and there would be no synergy between the driver and the dock. Because it requires a third-party driver, users are at the mercy of Apple and the third-party developer to support later versions, the company told Macworld. However, this combination of display technologies does allow M1 and M2 MacBooks to run more than one external monitor, and the M1 and M2 Mac mini to run more than two. As more manufacturers are coming out with docks and hubs that support it we feel fine with recommending it as a highly useful solution to Apples display limitations. The only risk is that it could stop working at any time, although it wouldnt harm your system if it did, and you could simply uninstall DisplayLink.DisplayLink and InstantView are workarounds with a potentially limited timespan but the likelihood is that compatibility would be restored at some stage if the worst happened and you would get back your multi-monitor setup.Read our M1 MacBook Air review, M2 MacBook Air review, and M3 MacBook Air review. If you are wanting to use a second display with your Mac and not have your Macs screen on, read our feature How to turn a Macs screen off. Want to use an 8K monitor? Read How to connect an 8K display to your Mac.What you need to know about DisplayLink and InstantView FAQ 1.Does DisplayLink and InstantView block Netflix or other streaming content?DisplayLink and InstantView are great at adding multiple monitors to M1, M2 and M3 Macs, but there is a catch. Some protected content in Netflix, AppleTV, Amazon Prime, Disney+ or YouTube TV and other streaming applications may not play. The video remains black while audio keeps playing. This is all down to how the macOS interfaces the DisplayLink driver used to access graphics content. As soon as one DisplayLink-enabled screen is connected, protected content becomes unavailable on all screens. This is down to the streaming platforms using High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), which is Intel-developed digital copy protection (Digital Rights Management or DRM) that prevents copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across connections.Because macOS requires DisplayLink and InstantView to enable Screen Recording, HDCP moves in because it thinks you are actually trying to record the content rather than just display it on screen.2.How to enable streaming content when using DisplayLink or InstantViewTo get round HDCP stopping your DisplayLink or InstantView setup showing Netflix, Amazon Prime and other streaming services, you may need to disconnect all the DisplayLink or InstantView screens, or switch to a browser other than Safari or Chrome (for example Opera or Firefox). You can disable hardware acceleration in your browser to access the protected content. On Google Chrome, go to Google Chrome settings, and click on Advanced and then select System. Here you can disable Use hardware acceleration when available.Select Relaunch to activate the new setting. If that doesnt solve the black issue, disconnect the docking station, and try using the laptops build-in display or the direct video ports of the laptop.Uninstalling the software is the ultimate solution.

New Apple Watch 2025: Everything we know about the Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3www.macworld.comMacworldPeople have high hopes for the Apple Watch in 2025 after the Apple Watch Series 10 disappointed in 2024. Despite rumors of major design changes, the Apple Watch 10 turned out to be more or less identical to every Apple Watch sold over the last few years. The display was just a tad larger, and the body was slightly thinner, but overall it was very similar to the Series 9.In 2025, it looks like Apple will deliver some long-awaited Apple Watch features. Read on to find out whats in store for Apple Watch Series 11, the Ultra 3, and the SE 3 in the fall of 2025. Heres what weve heard so far about the 2025 Apple Watch. Well run through whats expected for each Apple Watch model below.Updated August 26: Apple has announced that its Awe Dropping September iPhone event will be held on Tuesday, September 9.Apple Watch Series 11 release date: When is the next Apple Watch coming out?Launch at September iPhone event: Tuesday, September 9Pre-order from September 12On sale from September 19For years now, Apple has announced the new Apple Watch together with the new iPhone at a September event, with both products going on sale the following week. Thats the case again in 2025, with Apples Awe Dropping event landing on Tuesday, September 9. Apple has always used this event to launch new watches and we dont expect that to change this year.Pre-orders for the Apple Watch Series 11 will either be available on the same day or Friday, September 12, with general availability in stores a week later on September 19.Apple Watch Ultra 3 release date: Will there be a new Apple Watch Ultra in 2025?Launch at September iPhone event: Tuesday, September 9Pre-order from September 12On sale from September 19Surprisingly, Apple didnt update the Apple Watch Ultra in 2024, so the Apple Watch Ultra 2 has remained on sale despite the Apple Watch Series 11 having an updated chip (S9 vs S10). Will the lower spec have resulted in fewer sales for the so-called ultra watch, or will its features targeted at extreme sports enthusiasts be enough to keep stock moving? We dont know, but Apple cant have been concerned about how the older chip would be perceived, and perhaps we should take that as evidence that when it comes to the Apple Watch, the chip doesnt really matter? We expect Apple to rectify this in 2025 with the launch of the Apple Watch Ultra 3 alongside the Apple Watch Series 11. Apple Watch SE 3 release date: Will there be a new Apple Watch SE in 2025?Launch at September iPhone event: Tuesday, September 9Pre-order from September 12On sale from September 19Apple hasnt updated the Apple Watch SE since 2022, and that update was an extremely minor one, bringing a new chip and crash detection with a lower price of $249. It was initially rumored that 2024 would bring a substantial update to the budget watch with a plastic redesign, but that didnt happen. Will it happen in 2025? Possibly. However, a rumor in March 2025 claimed that the new Apple Watch SE had run into production issues and was in serious jeopardy. So Apple may stick with the current model for another year. The Apple Watch SE hasnt been updated since 2022.Henry Burrell / FoundryNew Apple Watch 2025 prices: How much will the new Apple Watch cost? Apple Watch Ultra 3: From $799/799 based on current priceApple Watch Series 11: From $399/399 based on current priceApple Watch SE 3: From $249/219 based on current priceEver since the Apple Watch Series 3, Apple has kept starting prices the same for the aluminum Apple Watch and, on that basis, we dont expect a price hike this year. This means that the Series 11 should start at $399 for the 42mm model, and the larger 46mm version will cost $429, with an extra $100 for cellular capability and higher prices for various bands. With the Series 10, Apple also offered a titanium case for $699/$699 or $749/749 depending on the size. This model includes LTE Cellular as standard. Rumors suggest Apple will keep that option around with the Series 11, likely at the same price. For the 49mm Ultra version, which also features a titanium case, pricing is $799/799, so not all that more expensive than the titanium variant of the Series 10 really. The SE 3 is likely to start at $249, as the SE 2 does, although the price may rise in the U.K. where it is currently 219. However, no discussion of future Apple product pricing is complete without mentioning U.S. tariffs, which are could have a big impact on pricing. Its simply too difficult to predict whether tariffs will increase the Apple Watchs price, but the odds are significant.New Apple Watch 2025 design: Will Apple update the design of the Series 11, Ultra, or SE?The Apple Watch Series 11 is likely to look nearly identical to the Series 10.Dominik Tomaszewski / FoundryThe newly announced watchOS 26 will itself bring a new design to the Apple Watch software in the form of a new more glass-like interface dubbed Liquid Glass that will be unified across all Apple devices. But what of the hardware? Rumors throughout 2024 told us to expect more significant changes to the Apple Watch design last year, and then the Series 10 debuted and it looked like a very slightly flattened Series 9. This year, all signs point to an Apple Watch Series 11 that is identical in appearance to the Series 10, with the possible exception of new colors, possibly sky blue to match the MacBook Air and iPhone 17.As for the Apple Watch Ultra 3, it might be slimmer. And yes, the display might be even largera report in August revealed that code in iOS 26 indicates that the Ultra 3 will have a display resolution of 422 by 514, which is an increase from the Ultra 2s 410 by 502.Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reported in September 2024 that a plastic SE redesign would arrive in 2025 alongside the Series 11. So the Apple Watch SE 3 might have a whole new look. However, in March 2025, Gurman claimed that the new Apple Watch SE had run into production issues and was in serious jeopardy. So Apple may need to stick to the aluminum design for the new SE to get the update out.New Apple Watch 2025 features: What are the new features? There have been rumors that Apple is trying to get features like blood pressure monitoring and blood sugar monitoring onto the Apple Watch, but these capabilities seem to still be a long way off in the future. What can we expect from the new Apple Watches in 2025?Health & Fitness Were not expecting any new health sensors. Apples blood glucose monitoring initiative is still years from ending up in a watch, it seems, and while there have been rumors of high blood pressure monitoring, thats apparently not quite ready to appear this year, either.A report in July 2025 found that the Apple Watch is best at measuring calorific usage, according to tests, although most smart watches, including Apples, tend to underestimate calories burned. Perhaps Apple will estimate calories burned even more accurately in future Apple Watches.watchOS 26, which is coming to recent Apple Watches (SE2, Series 6 and newer), will bring some health and fitness-related features, including a Workout Buddy that analyzes your usage data and fitness metrics to create personalized insights and pep talks and customization options that let you set up suitable playlists and podcasts to play during workouts. This Workout Buddy will add a new dimension to Apple Watch fitness routines. Choose a voice for your Workout Buddy, and it will coach you through workouts, using your personal health metrics and goals, and cheer you on with motivational messages. In our early testing of the beta we have felt that the Workout Buddy misses the mark a bit, but hopefully it will be more useful by the time the software update arrives. 5G and SatelliteIts also rumored that the Apple Watch Ultra 3 will support 5G cellular and satellite messaging, which could also come to the Series 11. Apple debuted a wireless chip in the iPhone 16e, but its not clear whether its small or efficient enough for the Apple Watch yet.Apple IntelligenceApple Intelligence and the new Siri could be one of the new features of watchOS 12 and the Apple Watch Series 11.Michael Simon/IDGAI is a key aspect of almost every new Apple product now, and rumors suggest Apple is working on bringing some AI features to the Apple Watch. The actual AI models probably wont be able to run on the watch; rather, the watch will gather data, the processing will be done on your iPhone, and then the watch will display results or notifications. The new AI-related features include Live Listen transcription and Live Translation, whereby your iPhone is used as a microphone to pick up the conversations around you that you might struggle to hear or understand, and your device then transcribes what is said and displays it on your screen. These transcriptions or translations can then be sent to your Apple Watch for you to reference in real time.Other features coming in watchOS 26 include automatic volume adjustment, so that notifications are adjusted depending on where you are there wont be a loud alarm if you are in the library, for example. And new Smart Actions that will make suggestions based on incoming texts and other elements, for example, if a friend texts to ask where you are, youll see a prompt to share your location using the Find My app. Many of the new AI features will debut as part of watchOS 26, so they will be available on all compatible Watches, but some might be kept as Series 11 exclusives in order to help differentiate the hardware.Touch ID Internal software suggests that Touch ID could be coming to future Apple Watch models, but we dont expect to see that feature until 2026. According to specific entries in developer beta code, Apple has been experimenting with some form of biometric authentication on the Apple Watch. Code for what clearly refers to the 2026 models of the Apple Watch mentions support for AppleMesa, which has long beenApples internal codename for Touch ID.New Apple Watch 2025 specs & hardwareSo, what hardware will be new? You can bet on a new S11 SiP (system in package), offering somewhat better performance.Battery lifeDont expect a big boost in battery life for the Apple Watch 11that has been a near-constant 18 hours for nearly the entire lifespan of the watch.Battery life of the Ultra and SE is also unlikely to change.microLED screenApple has been working on incorporating a microLED display on the Apple Watch for several years, according to various leaks and rumors, but its not expected to debut on the Series 11 this year. It could, however, arrive on the Apple Watch Ultra in 2025.New CPUA new CPU will be coming to the Apple Watch too, but the biggest changes are unlikely to arrive until 2026. Leaked code refers to Watch8, while the Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Series 11 are all referred to as Watch7. The new CPU for the 2026 Watch is identified as T8320, apparently. Best portable monitors for Macwww.macworld.comMacworldMost monitors sit on a desk and dont move any more than their stand or arm allows. We have a separate round up of the best monitors for Mac. But sometimes a more portable solution makes sense when the MacBooks own screen simply isnt large enough. There are two main types of portable display: travel monitors that can be slipped into a backpack; or moveable monitors that can be carried from one room to another or quickly hidden from sight when not in use. Here are our picks for the best portable displays to match with your Mac.1. Many purchase portable monitors not for their portability but instead their versatility and ease of useso it can be moved across a home or corporate office. At home, it could let you have two home office setups without having to purchase two monitors, or simply store the monitor out of sight in a cupboard when not in use. In an office, it could be carried to meetings if you need to lead a presentation or study a large spreadsheet. Ive been on many a call, trying to keep on track on my MacBook as the presenter talks through a complex Excel doc. As large a portable monitor as possible is what you need in those situationsor a wide TV screen. The Asus ZenScreen MB249C pairs a sizable 24-inch screen with several stand options including a kickstand/handle that makes it easy to tote around a house or corporate office. It provides excellent image quality for its intended purpose. Its bright enough and scores well in contrast, color gamut, and color accuracy, all while avoiding notable problems or pitfalls. The MB249C is a great choice for a second decent-sized monitor, too, as it offers multiple ways to mount and orient it alongside your primary monitor.Matthew S. A vertically stacked monitor, such as the UPerfect Delta Max Touch, can be more ergonomic as the body doesnt need to frequently turn left and right. The line of sight remains directly in front of the user, reducing frequent rotation of the neck. It looks sleek in black aluminum, with a built-in stand folded flush to the outside of the lower screen. You can modify the angle of the stand to adjust the height and angle of the screen to suit your best working posture. The central hinge also allows for flexible adjustment of the two screens to a comfortable and ergonomic angle when used in either a stacked arrangement or folded back on itself to share meeting content with people facing yousay, so you looking at one screen and the clients on the other side of the meeting seeing the other. The screens are supposed to feature touch controls and while its definitely there the touch functionality is basic at best and awkward in use. Ignore this aspect and just see this portable monitor as a great solution if you want a good-looking, well-built and super-adjustable portable extended dual screen that connects to your laptop for a more spacious screen experience. The ability to run off two computers and the flexibility to bend right back to offer front and back mirrored screens could be the solutions you are looking for in a adaptable dual-screen display. This is a dual display that can be folded and stored out of sight when working from home, or commuted short distances to an office or farther afield in a car. The price is high but this portable all-environment, 2-in-1 screen might solve your display needs away from a standard desk setup.Setup is easy and theres a useful video available for teaching you all its tricks. When collapsed the whole thing fits into a small box a bit larger than an iPad mini or over-ear headphones case (see our photo above), albeit quite a fat one, at 9.5 x 9.5 x 3.5 inches. It weighs 2.5lbs (1.1kg), so combined with the foldability its more portable than traditional fixed and firmer monitors. The 24.5-inch screen displays a native 1920 x 1080 resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio, with a max brightness of 760 nits in display mode. While the nanomaterial screen is flexible, it is taut and wrinkle-free. You adjust focus and brightness via controls on the top of the projector body. Comapred to a standard hard monitor its not as great for reading a lot of small text on the screen but its target function for viewing from distance. The Splay is marketed at on-the-road presentations and trade shows, videos, but it would work as well for showing videos at home or on a camping trip when a laptop just isnt large enough. The 44Wh battery should keep the screen bright for up to four hours and handily can triple-up as a power bank to top up your phone or laptop via USB-C. Apples massive iPhone makeover revealed: Thin, folding, and curved models all on the waywww.macworld.comMacworldIf the rumors are correct, Apple will hold its annual iPhone event in just two weeks, on Tuesday, September 9. Thats nothing new, as Apple always announces a new Phone in the fall, but this years event could be as big as the iPhone X launch in 2017, according to a new Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman. In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman lays out Apples plans to reinvigorate its flagship phone over the next three years. It starts with the iPhone 17 Air, expected to launch as a new model this year. Rumors have long pointed to the model as a super-skinny replacement for the iPhone 16 Plus with a slightly smaller screen and single rear camera. Gurman also reports that the model will have subpar battery life and use Apples C1 model, which was introduced in the iPhone 16e earlier this year.More importantly, Gurman says the iPhone 17 Airs engineering and components will set the stage for future innovation across the next two generations.First up will be Apples first folding iPhone, due in 2026. Gurman says the handset will feature five cameras (one on the front, one on the inside, and two on the back) and use Touch ID built into the power button instead of Face ID. It will reportedly include the next generation of Apples modem, the C2, with capabilities approaching the latest from Qualcomm, and might only be available in black and white. In 2027, Apple is planning yet another massive redesign to commemorate the iPhones 20th anniversary. Gurman reports that the iPhone 20 will finally break from the squared-off slab weve lived with since 2020 and move to an approach with curved glass edges all around. He provides few details but notes that it will fit nicely with the Liquid Glass redesign coming to iOS 26 next month.Gurman doesnt speculate on the price for these new models, but theyre certain to come in higher than the $1,199 starting price of the Pro Max. Samsungs flagship folding phone starts at $1,999, and analysts expect the folding iPhone to be a bit higher than that, with Gurman noting that the folding iPhone will be hugely popular with Apples legion of consumers who are willing to spend whatever to get the latest and greatest. Altogether, its a very exciting time for the iPhone with new flagship models launching every year. And it looks like the days of the boring iPhone release are over.
