BBC and Agatha Christie estate respond to deepfake controversy
The author was recreated with the help of an actress and artificial intelligence. (AI-generated image) Credit: BBC Maestro On Wednesday, BBC Maestro — a similar service to Masterclass — launched a new writing course taught by the best-selling novelist of all time. There’s a catch: the author, genre-defining mystery writer Agatha Christie, died 50 years ago, and was thus unavailable to participate.Instead, BBC Maestro used an actress and artificial intelligence to recreate Christie, drawing from the author’s own novels, interviews, and letters for the course material. The creators describe the effort as a “world-first,” and the “Agatha Christie On Writing” masterclass is available now.Almost as soon as the course launched, critics accused the BBC of making an Agatha Christie “deepfake.” Meanwhile, BBC Maestro wants to emphasize the participation of the Christie estate and their high esteem for the late author.“This groundbreaking course was carefully created over two years by a team of almost 100 people, including academics, researchers, creative professionals, and a team of leading global Agatha Christie scholars, who have each studied Agatha’s written and spoken words and who curated the course to reflect all her teachings,” an announcement reads.  The Agatha Christie writing course is available now. Credit: Screenshot courtesy of BBC Maestro Is the Agatha Christie writing course inspired or unsettling? The BBC Maestro says viewers and aspiring writers can learn "the art of suspense, plot twists, and unforgettable characters" from Christie herself, yet many creatives are extremely wary of applying artificial intelligence to the arts — no matter what.Whether the course qualifies as a deepfake depends on how you define deepfake. A 2024 article from BBC Newsround defines deepfakes as “videos, picture or audio clips made with artificial intelligence to look real. They can be used for fun, or even for scientific research, but sometimes they're used to impersonate people like politicians or world leaders, in order to deliberately mislead people.” The term is most often used with negative connotations to refer to AI-generated content created without consent. Just this week in the United States, congress passed the “Take It Down” Act to prevent deepfakes and revenge porn from spreading online. Obviously, Christie can’t personally consent to her likeness and voice being used to sell writing courses, but the Christie estate was involved in this project from its inception. The BBC worked closely with Christie’s great-grandson James Prichard, who manages the author’s estate.Certainly, the BBC knew this project would be controversial, and both Prichard and BBC Maestro reject the use of the term “deepfake” in this context. In a statement provided to Mashable, Prichard, the Chairman and CEO of Agatha Christie Ltd., said, “What we have created is a course that distills my great-grandmother’s ingenious craft into an easy to follow and accessible course. This isn’t a fake. The words are Christie’s own, carefully sourced by researchers. As a family, we approached the project with the utmost care and respect with the overarching goal of honouring my great-grandmother and to share her immense talent and process with the world.”Both Prichard and BBC Maestro are keen to emphasize that Christie’s likeness was lovingly rendered, despite the controversial nature of AI resurrection projects like this.In answer to our questions, BBC Maestro CEO Michael Levine told us that the term “deepfake” most commonly refers to material made “without permission” and “often for malicious purpose.” Related Stories “That is absolutely not what we’re doing,” Levine said in an email statement to Mashable. “Every step was guided by ethics, transparency, and a deep respect for her legacy.”Levine also emphasized the involvement of Christie’s own estate and leading scholars of her work.“From the outset, our focus was on being 100% ethical and respectful in honouring Agatha Christie's remarkable legacy. We worked hand-in-hand with the Christie Estate to ensure her image is used only with their express approval and in a way that reflects her values. We collaborated with four world-leading Agatha Christie scholars who developed the script using her own words and writings. An actor then performed the role with full awareness of how the material would be used — exclusively in the context of this programme."The team took great care over two years to represent Christie as realistically as possible, yet AI skeptics condemned the entire project immediately.Whether you think this is an exciting opportunity to “learn directly from the most successful novelist of all time” or a grotesque application of AI technology, BBC Maestro is absolutely correct to call the course “groundbreaking.”  Timothy Beck Werth Tech Editor Timothy Beck Werth is the Tech Editor at Mashable, where he leads coverage and assignments for the Tech and Shopping verticals. Tesla reportedly went looking for a new CEO. Elon Musk denies it.
Was Tesla's board looking to replace Elon Musk as CEO?A surprising new report from The Wall Street Journal claims Tesla's board sought to replace Elon Musk with a new CEO. However, since the report was published, Musk has denied the accuracy of the WSJ's reporting. In a late-night post on X, Musk wrote, "It is an EXTREMELY BAD BREACH OF ETHICS that the @WSJ would publish a DELIBERATELY FALSE ARTICLE and fail to include an unequivocal denial beforehand by the Tesla board of directors!" Musk also shared an official statement from Tesla chair Robyn Denholm, which called the report "absolutely false."According to the report, some Tesla board members were "irritated" with Musk's lack of focus on Tesla. Musk famously stepped away from running his EV car company to take on a new gig with the Trump administration as a special government employee. Musk has been closely involved with a controversial government cost-cutting effort known as DOGE. The WSJ reports this prompted the Tesla board members to contact executive search firms to start the process of finding a new CEO for Tesla. The WSJ reports that the Tesla board members were close to working with one major executive search firm. In addition to a new CEO, Tesla's board was reportedly searching for an independent director to add to the company as well. In March, a long-time Tesla investor urged Musk to either return to the company or resign as CEO. And after a dismal earnings report in April, Musk said he would step away from DOGE and devote "far more" time to Tesla."Earlier today, there was a media report erroneously claiming that the Tesla Board had contacted recruitment firms to initiate a CEO search at the company," Denholm's statement reads. "This is absolutely false (and this was communicated to the media before the report was published). The CEO of Tesla is Elon Musk and the Board is highly confident in his ability to continue executing on the exciting growth plan ahead." Related Stories Tesla has been struggling in recent months, ever since Musk started working with President Donald Trump and DOGE. Musk's EV car company reported a 71 percent drop in profit for the most recent quarter. Tesla attributed much of this to boycotts and protests against Tesla, Musk, and DOGE. Tesla sales have fallen around the world as a result. Many Tesla owners have also been looking to get rid of their EVs due to the company's ties with Musk.

Google and Duolingo think AI can change the way we learn languages. Are they right?
This bird is now powered by AI. Credit: Cheng Xin/Getty Images AI continues to expand its reach into our lives, and language learning is next on the list. This week brought big developments from both Google and Duolingo on that front. On Google's end, the search giant launched new Gemini-powered AI tools for users to learn foreign languages. Dubbed Little Language Lessons, the experimental feature offers three interactive lessons that "personalize language learning." For instance, "Tiny Lesson" can help you learn phrases for specific situations (such as losing your passport), while "Slang Hang" helps users learn local slang for less-stuffy conversation. Finally, "Word Cam" lets Gemini look at objects in your photos and labels them in the language you're learning.Duolingo, on the other hand, is going full speed ahead with generative AI. The company announced this week that it would stop relying on human contractors for "work that AI can handle," while also committing to using AI in hiring and performance reviews. On top of that, Duolingo announced on Wednesday that it used generative AI to come up with 148 new language learning courses, doubling its total course offerings. The large language models behind Google Gemini and other popular AI tools have proved particularly adept at translation. Duolingo certainly believes the technology has big potential for language learning. Mashable Light Speed Want more out-of-this world tech, space and science stories? Of course, you don't have to look far to find people on social media responding negatively to the news. On X, some users are asking their peers to delete the app for going all-in on AI language learning. Learning another language is an inherently social activity, something a person usually does if they want to interact with other humans on a deeper level. Practically speaking, language learning usually requires human-to-human engagement. For its part, Google says it's not trying to replace human instruction. A Google blog post reads, "These experiments aren’t about replacing traditional study, but about complementing it: helping people build habits, stay engaged, and weave learning into their everyday lives." I tried the new Meta AI app: 3 unexpected features
Meta has spent the better part of a year integrating Meta AI with Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and its other existing services, but hadn’t yet launched a standalone experience for Meta AI fans. That all changed yesterday at LlamaCon, the company's inaugural AI developer conference, when the company finally launched the Meta AI app.The new app is built with Meta's Llama 4 model. It's a full-fledged competitor to ChatGPT, which became the fastest-growing app in history after its launch.Already, AI enthusiasts are digging into the app to see what sets it apart from the competition. Per Meta’s press release, the big takeaway is personalization. Not only does the app integrate with your Facebook and Instagram accounts to give you more personalized responses, but it also has a memory feature, so it can reference past discussions and add more context to future ones. This isn’t necessarily unique to the Meta AI app since Grok also does this with people’s X accounts, and every other major AI chatbot has the memory feature. However, we would argue the ability to work with both Facebook and Instagram is fairly significant, considering their widespread popularity. That also gives Meta AI more potential data to draw from to make its answers more personalized. With that said, there’s more to the Meta AI app than just its personalization and memory capabilities, and some of those features are fairly unique to the Meta AI experience. So, after downloading and experimenting with the new Meta AI app, here are three big features to check out. A social Discover feed to give you ideas Credit: Screenshot courtesy of Meta Let’s start with the most obvious one, and that’s the Discover feed. Upon opening the app, you’ll be able to engage with it by tapping on the compass icon. It works almost exactly as you would expect. People use Meta AI to generate answers to questions, images, and other such things, and then those posts are shared to the feed for you to engage with.  Mashable Light Speed Want more out-of-this world tech, space and science stories? Sign up for Mashable's weekly Light Speed newsletter. By clicking Sign Me Up, you confirm you are 16+ and agree to our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. Thanks for signing up! You can like, comment, or share anything you see there. A fourth button appears to load the same prompt into your own Meta AI conversation, so you can see what you get when you ask Meta AI the same question. During my testing, I saw someone post an image with the prompt “imagine me Miley Cyrus at Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Tour.” The image it generated for me was different from the one in my Discover feed. Now, whether Meta's AI is supposed to be generating quasi-photorealistic images of public figures is another question entirely.Near as I can tell, the Discover feed has two important uses. The first is showing off what Meta AI can do while giving you yet another thing to doomscroll. The other is giving users fresh ideas on what they can ask Meta AI about. During my brief time on Discover, I found people asking about Mars colonization, what colors would work for their wardrobe, and loads of stuff about the Catholic Church in the wake of Pope Francis' passing. In short, it not only serves entertainment value, but also as an idea generator, especially when the next wave of AI trends hits the market.Hardware supportThe Meta AI app also supports the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses. In fact, Meta is replacing the existing Meta View companion app with the Meta AI app, so this is the app you’ll need to use moving forward for your smart glasses. It’s easy enough to get to. Just open up the app and click the glasses icon to add your smart glasses, and then continue using them as normal from there. Per Meta, once you get everything synced up, you’ll be able to start a conversation on the glasses and continue it on the app. Chat history will also be accessible through the Meta AI app, and it’ll all be integrated with conversations you have on the app natively. Meta does note that you won’t be able to start a chat from the app and then continue on the glasses. Even so, OpenAI, xAI, and Google certainly don't have this type of hardware integration. Related Stories I don’t personally own a pair of the smart glasses, so there are likely some extra little things that I haven’t seen that Meta didn’t put in the press release. Even so, direct hardware support is something ChatGPT doesn’t boast. Credit: Screenshot courtesy of Meta Full-duplex Voice ModeThis one isn’t particularly new or unique, but it's the first such implementation for Meta’s AI. For the uninitiated, full-duplex voice mode describes the feature when you can chat with AI in real-time. You talk, it responds, you respond back, so on and so forth. A few AI chatbots have this feature already. Meta uses it differently, though. While you can still chat with Meta’s AI in both directions, full-duplex voice mode also changes how the AI talks back. It integrates natural human language, like pauses, along with filler words like “umm.” This is demonstrably different from how the AI typically talks to you, so it’s something different for people who want that. The app says that the feature is in beta and doesn’t use the most updated knowledge base like the regular AI voice, so you’ll likely get worse answers if you use it. Once it hits primetime, it’s a neat little addition. In the meantime, the regular AI voice has options for John Cena, Awkwafina, Judi Dench, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kristen Bell. Twitch is lagging behind TikTok, YouTube in livestreaming wars
Credit: Mateusz Slodkowski/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images Twitch may be the platform most people associate with livestreaming, but the numbers tell a different story.According to new data from Stream Charts, Amazon’s livestreaming giant has slipped to third place globally. The Global Livestreaming Landscape report for Q1, released April 29, puts TikTok Live ahead of Twitch, trailing only YouTube Live at the top.TikTok Live racked up over 8 billion hours watched between January and March — a 30 percent jump from Q4. That surge is credited partly to the rising popularity of IRL content and a wave of gaming events across Southeast Asia that pulled in massive viewership. TikTok’s e-commerce engine is another driving force behind the platform’s upward trajectory. Combine that with the frictionless experience of tuning into a stream on your phone, and its continued surge in viewership feels inevitable.More than anything, TikTok’s most significant advantage over Twitch is discovery. Surfacing new creators is baked into the platform’s DNA — something Twitch has struggled with for years. The gap is so vast that many Twitch streamers have been building their brands through TikTok clips to funnel viewers back to their longer-form content. Related Stories Per the report, Twitch appears to be stuck in neutral. The platform clocked 4.84 billion hours watched, a 1-2 percent decrease relative to the previous quarter. It still holds ground in gaming, but, overall, Twitch's growth could be interpreted as stagnant. Thanks to its diversity of content, YouTube continues to dominate with a staggering 14.98 billion watch hours in Q1 alone.Despite slipping to third place, Twitch still belongs to an elite tier of global streaming platforms — one that rivals like Kick and Rumble are nowhere near. The right-leaning upstarts captured just 2.9 percent and 0.5 percent of global watch hours, respectively. Amber Ruffin tells Stephen Colbert one thing she would have said at the White House Correspondents Dinner
Amber Ruffin was supposed to perform at the White House Correspondents Dinner on Saturday, but was disinvited by WHCA president Eugene Daniels in March, with the comedian telling Stephen Colbert the reason on Tuesday night."I had said that it would be impossible to make jokes about both sides," Ruffin said on The Late Show. "Because we're at a point now where one side is snatching people up off the street and putting them on a plane, and the other side is, you know, not doing that.""After they fired me I looked back at my Google Doc and was like, this would have been bad," Ruffin added later. "They would not have liked it."Colbert, who performed at the WHCA in 2006, absolutely ripping into then-President George W. Bush, asked Ruffin of any jokes she might like to share with The Late Show — to which she said "absolutely not." However, she did share her potential wrap-up."I was going to end it with like, 'This administration is trying to get you to hate other people and that's not your natural state. Human beings are made to love one another. But, I mean, it's true! They got you by convincing you that you're filled with hate and you absolutely aren't. It's the opposite of what you're made for.' Mark Zuckerberg wants AI to do half of Metas coding by 2026
Zuckerberg provided new insights on the future of AI coding at Meta. Credit: Chris Unger / Zuffa LLC / Getty Images Tonight at LlamaCon, Meta's first inaugural AI developer conference, an interview between Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed just how much of their products' code is written by AI.During the closing keynote for LlamaCon, Zuckerberg asked Nadella how much code within Microsoft is now written by AI. Nadella's response? "Maybe 20 to 30 percent of the code that is inside of our repos today, and some of our projects, are probably all written by [AI] software." But when Nadella flipped the question back to Zuckerberg, his estimate for Meta's near future was even higher. Zuckerberg said he didn't have the current numbers off the top of his head, but that "our bet is sort of that in the next year... maybe half the development is going to be done by AI as opposed to people, and that will kind of increase from there." Based on the exchange, it's not entirely clear if Zuckerberg was referring to Llama specifically or Meta overall. Regardless, that sounds like a big number for a technology that still feels very nascent to the public at large. However, in the tech world, the impressive coding abilities of AI models are being aggressively utilized to generate new code for those same AI models. For context, Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently revealed that AI generates about a quarter of the company's code (per Engadget). Typically, AI is used to increase human programmers' productivity, sometimes dramatically so, rather than replacing humans entirely. Later, as the conversation turned towards agentic systems automating more of their respective businesses, Zuckerberg predicted "every engineer is effectively gonna end up being more of like a tech lead" where they each have "their own little army of agents that they work with." The keynote spanned from the technical, like the current state of agentic AI, to the philosophical, when Nadella called for new ways of measuring AI progress. For instance, he wondered what it would take for AI technology to grow the GDP of the developing world by 10 percent? Related Stories SEE ALSO: Meta has finally launched its ChatGPT competitor As two of the most powerful tech leaders in the world, Zuckerberg and Nadella have strong beliefs in AI's potential and big, global plans to see them through. Nadella was an interesting choice as the interviewee of the LlamaCon keynote. As the leader of Microsoft, Nadella is heavily intertwined with OpenAI, one of Meta's chief rivals. Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Mashable’s parent company, in April filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems. The 5 Nintendo Switch 2 launch titles I cant wait to play (besides Mario Kart World)
It's no secret that Mario Kart World is the main reason to get a Nintendo Switch 2 at launch. I even got to play it myself at the Nintendo launch event. But what else will you be able to play if/when you get bored of that game?Luckily, Nintendo has an extensive list of Switch 2 launch titles available to play on June 5. As is usually the case with new consoles, many of them are ports of older games. However, in this instance, that's not such a bad thing; there are plenty of people out there who only had a Nintendo Switch, meaning they may have missed out big games like Cyberpunk 2077.Assuming you've got your Switch 2 preorder on deck, here are five of the best Nintendo Switch 2 launch titles to keep in mind ahead of June 5 — besides Mario Kart World. Opens in a new window Credit: Nintendo Mario Kart World $79.99 at Target Release Date: June 5, 2025 The Nintendo Switch 2 launch titles I can't wait to playAgain, a few of these games already came out elsewhere, but they might still be new to Nintendo fans.Fast Fusion Looks fast. Credit: Shin'en/Nintendo One of the best latter-day Wii U games was a little futuristic racer called Fast Racing Neo. This, in turn, became one of the best Switch 1 launch titles, in an upgraded form called Fast RMX. Now, developer Shin'en is back with a long-awaited sequel that promises new ideas with the same technical excellence as its predecessors.Shin'en hasn't said much about Fast Fusion yet, other than that it will be out at launch and will only cost $14.99, making it the anti-Mario Kart in one way. But it looks the part of a futuristic arcade-style racing game with a sharp sense of speed, gorgeous visuals, split-screen and online multiplayer, and a unique car fusion system that should set it apart from the competition. And again, it's just $15. Opens in a new window Credit: Nintendo Fast Fusion (digital) $14.99 at Nintendo Release Date: June 5, 2025 Yakuza 0 Director's Cut Expect a lot of this. The Switch 2 version adds some bonuses, like new English voice acting and a weird-looking multiplayer fighting mode, but Yakuza 0 could've been ported as-is, and that would've been fine. It's an oddball action-adventure game set in a highly period-accurate version of urban, red-light district Japan in the late 1980s. Aside from the very fun and very violent combat, it's also got interactive karaoke, mahjong, and all kinds of other cultural delights for you to take part in on the side.Yakuza 0 also has a terrific story with two excellent protagonists. Credit: CD Projekt Red/Nintendo The Switch 2 port of Cyberpunk 2077 might be a good litmus test for what the Switch 2 is capable of on a technical level, and that alone makes it compelling, at least to me.This game famously had to be pulled from the PlayStation store after launch in 2020 because the PS4 version was so terrible, and the Switch 2 is about as powerful as a PS4. Developer CD Projekt Red has had years to sort Cyberpunk out, though, and the game is genuinely in an excellent state these days. Between that and the highly impressive Switch 1 port of The Witcher 3, it's easy to see a world where a lot of people experience Cyberpunk for the first time on Switch 2 and have a perfectly decent time doing so. Since then, Fox has been following up on Undertale with Deltarune, an expanded successor with different combat and an episodic release format, but the same off-beat sense of humor and catchy musical direction. Related Stories The first two chapters of Deltarune have been out for a while, but chapters 3 and 4 (in a package that includes all of them) are shipping at launch with Switch 2. If you've already been committed to the Deltarune train, why not continue on Switch 2? If not, maybe this is a good place to start, too. These are games that need to be experienced to be understood. It's kind of a third-person hack-and-slash action game, but also kind of a strategic tower defense game. In totality, it's very unique, cool to look at, and fun to play. Capcom has a bit of an under-discussed banger here, so maybe the Switch 2 launch can be a good way for people who missed Kunitsu-Gami the first time around to catch it now. Meta has finally launched its ChatGPT competitor
Credit: Cheng Xin/Getty Images In the thick of Meta’s first-ever AI developer conference, LlamaCon, CEO Mark Zuckerberg hit the launch button on Meta AI — the company’s full-throttle answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.According to Meta’s April 29 press release, the new standalone AI app is built on the company’s latest Llama 4 model. It’s pitched as a hyper-personalized assistant for users already living inside the Meta ecosystem: WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook — you know the drill. In a choice Instagram video, Zuckerberg, framed in a pair of Meta Ray-Ban glasses, pitched the app as a product built for voice-first conversations. View this post on Instagram One standout feature is the Discover feed. It lets you see how your connections use Meta AI, surfacing prompts they’ve tried (with their permission). Meta says you’re in full control over what, if anything, gets shared. Since personalization is at the heart of the experience, it’s worth noting: opting out of having your data scraped to train Meta’s AI is nearly impossible. Credit: Meta The app is also meant to pair with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. You can kick off a conversation via voice through the glasses, then jump into the app or web interface later to pick up the thread. Other than that, though, the app functions the same as it does on Messenger and IG, just now wrapped in a separate, slick interface accessible from both your phone and desktop. With LlamaCon underway in California, this standalone launch isn’t just a product drop — it’s a litmus test. Meta needs to show investors and developers that its AI ambitions are alive and accelerating. Back in January, Zuckerberg committed a staggering $60 billion to U.S.-based data centers to power Meta AI.The launch could also be the nudge OpenAI needs to hit the gas on its own social-facing ChatGPT app. CEO Sam Altman joked about the idea months ago, when Meta first teased its standalone AI app. Now, signs point to OpenAI quietly building something that might make that joke a reality. Congress passes ‘Take It Down’ Act to fight AI-fueled deepfake pornography
Under the new law, platforms would have to take down certain deepfakes. Credit: Andrew Harnik/Getty Images Congress has passed a bill that forces tech companies to take action against certain deepfakes and revenge porn posted on their platforms. In a 409-2 vote on Monday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the "Take It Down" Act, which has received bipartisan support. The bill also received vocal support from celebrities and First Lady Melania Trump. The bill already passed the Senate in a vote last month. The Take It Down Act will now be sent to President Donald Trump, who is expected to sign it into law.First introduced by Republican Senator Ted Cruz and Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar in 2024, the Take It Down Act would require that tech companies take quick action against nonconsensual intimate imagery. Platforms would be required to remove such content within 48 hours of a takedown request. The Federal Trade Commission could then sue platforms that do not comply with such requests. In addition to targeting tech platforms, the Take It Down Act also carves out punishments, which include fines and potential jail time, for those who create and share such imagery. The new law would make it a federal crime to publish — or even threaten to publish — explicit nonconsensual images, which would include revenge porn and deepfake imagery generated with AI.Digital rights groups have shared their concerns regarding the Take It Down Act. Activists have said that the bill could be weaponized to censor legally protected speech, and that legal content could be inaccurately flagged for removal.Despite these concerns, the Take It Down Act even received support from the tech platforms it seeks to police, such as Snapchat and Roblox.Congress isn't finished addressing AI and deepfakes this year either. Both the NO FAKES Act of 2025 and Content Origin Protection and Integrity from Edited and Deepfaked Media Act of 2025 have also been introduced this session. The former seeks to protect individuals from having their voice replicated by AI without their consent, whereas the latter looks to protect original works and require transparency around AI-generated content.

Why are retailers so eager to get rid of MacBook Airs? Prices start at $799
Credit: Apple / Mashable Photo Composite Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. Learn more about how we select deals. SAVE UP TO 38%: Both the Apple MacBook Air M3 and the Apple MacBook Air M4 have hit new all-time low prices with the M3 (15 inch, 8GB RAM, 256GB) coming in at $799, down from the normal price of $1,299 and the M4 (13 inch, 16GB RAM, 256GB) coming in at $849, down from the standard price of $999. Best MacBook Air deals Best MacBook M4 deal Apple MacBook Air, 13 inch (M4, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD) $849 (save $150) Best MacBook Air M3 deal Apple MacBook Air, 15 inch (M3, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) $799 (save $500) We've all been stressed about fluctuating tariffs and higher prices in pretty much every aspect of life. So when we spot top-of-the-line laptops hitting record-low prices, we're both elated and also perplexed. Regardless of emotions, the numbers don't lie — now is a really great time to grab a new Apple MacBook Air.As of April 29, the most affordable option is the 15-inch Apple MacBook Air (M3, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) for $799 at B&H Photo, down from the standard price of $1,299 which works out to a 38% discount that shaves $500 of the normal price. You can also go with the latest model and score a 13-inch Apple MacBook Air (M4, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD) for $849 at Amazon, down from the normal price of $999. That works out to a 15% discount that'll save you $150, matching the lowest price we've ever seen at Amazon. Why are MacBooks Air dropping in price? It's anyone's guess, but we'll take it, especially in this economy. The MacBook Air with an M4 processor was only released in March which means seeing these discounts less than two months after launch is ultra exciting.Mashable Senior Editor Stan Schroeder was impressed with the newest model and wrote in his review, "The new MacBook Air is great. It's powerful, silent, and comes with a couple of much-needed upgrades. It's also cheaper than before, making it the best-buy Apple laptop, period." Mashable Deals Want more hand-picked deals from our shopping experts? Sign up for the Mashable Deals newsletter. By clicking Sign Me Up, you confirm you are 16+ and agree to our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. Thanks for signing up! Since most affordable M4 comes in at just $50 more than the most affordable M3 (while they're both on sale) grabbing the M4 seems like a no-brainer. It also comes with double the RAM — 16GB instead of the 8GB from the M3. However, the $849 sale price on the MacBook Air with M4 processor is for a 13-inch model. If you're all about size, the 15-inch MacBook Air with M3 processor for $799 might be your best bet. But keep in mind, MacBooks are well known as fantastic laptops, so you're not gonna go wrong with either pick here.Since we have no idea what the future prices of tech will do, snag a MacBook Air now while it's on sale for a record-low price. The best wireless headphones in 2025
Table of Contents Table of Contents Table of Contents How do wireless headphones work? What are the most important headphones features? What is noise cancellation? What are the best wireless headphones? Sony WH-1000XM5: Best For Features Apple AirPods Max: Best For Apple JBL Tune 660NC: Best For Durability Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2e: Best For Sound Quality Grado GW100x: Best For Home Marshall Monitor III ANC: Best For Battery Life EarFun Wave Pro: Best For Connectivity This content originally appeared on Mashable for a US audience and has been adapted for the UK audience.Wired headphones are making a comeback with Gen Z — and wired headphones have always been the choice for true audiophiles — but wireless headphones are still the direction of technological travel. In fact, lots of up-to-date devices don't even have headphone jacks, so going wireless is now the universal option. And we are talking headphones here, not earbuds. Sure, earbuds might be more convenient for on-the-move lifestyles and fitness, but headphones tend to deliver superior sound. And they do a great job of shutting out the outside world. That's because headphones create a seal over your ears to block out exterior noise, so even if they aren't technically "noise cancelling", they will still do a decent job preventing unwanted sound from interfering with your music or podcast. But buying headphones can be hard. The sheer number of available headphones, combined with ever-advancing tech — which is all designed to cater to different listening habits and lifestyles — makes it tricky to pick the best pair of headphones for you and your ears. Let us help by offering some handy headphone information. How do wireless headphones work? Most wireless headphones are Bluetooth-enabled, the standard technology these days for hooking your headphones to a smart device. Other options include old radio frequency technology. Bluetooth is the standard and work perfectly well for music and podcasts, but if you’re using wireless headphones to hook up to your TV, radio frequency might be a better choice because there’s less chance of lag between picture and audio — sometimes an issue with Bluetooth unless your device and headphones support the latest and best performing Bluetooth codecs. What are the most important headphones features? Some of the jargon around headphones can be confusing, so we've broken down some of the most important headphone features to help you pick the perfect pair:Bluetooth codecs — As referenced above, these are clever bits of software that encode and decode digital audio signals. The codecs decode at a specific bitrate, which determines whether the headphones have a high or low latency (AKA lag), measured in milliseconds. Look out for headphones with low latency that support Qaulcomm’s aptX codecs, which are usually rated as the best codecs for streaming video content or hooking up to a TV.Closed-back/open-back — Closed back headphones have completely sealed ear cups, which directs sound to your ears and keeps out ambient noise. Closed-back are often the go-to choice for commuting and noisy environments. Open-back headphones let air into the ear cup but can cause sound leakage that goes both ways — in and out. This is sometimes found on very expensive headphones for clearer, natural sound. Drivers — These are little cone-shaped gadgets in the ear cups that are responsible for your tunes. They convert electrical signals into sounds. For over-ear headphones, they usually measure between 20mm and 50mm in headphones. On-ear and over ear —Keep these features in mind when shopping around for your next pair of headphones. What is noise cancellation?Noise cancellation is exactly as it sounds — a method of cancelling out external noise to help you shut off the outside world and get deep into the listening zone. There are two kinds of noise cancellation: Passive and active noise cancellation. Passive noise cancellation happens by design as the physical build of the ear cups creates a seal to block incoming sounds. Active noise cancellation (ANC) is a bit more complicated. It uses tiny microphones within the ear cups, which detect incoming noise and emit sound waves to cancel out that noise. Some headphones feature different ANC modes, such as “transparency mode”, which allows certain noises to get through, such as voices. That means you can immerse yourself in the music but always know when a friend or colleague starts a conversation. What are the best wireless headphones? To help you decide, we've rounded up the best wireless headphones based on researching the reviews, listening experience, and customer comments. They range in quality, features, and price, so there's something for everyone. These are the best wireless headphones for 2025. Sony WH-1000XM5 Best For Features The Good & The Bad Great sound and ANC Speak-to-Chat mode Voice assistant Multi-point pairing Rapid charging Not built for fitness Why We Like It Unless you’re into specialist audiophile tech — which is a whole other world — there’s one top choice for premium, everyday headphones: The Sony WH-1000XM4. As ever with Sony’s top-of-the-range gear, you’ll pay a little more (or a lot more, even) but you get the full package: Incredible sound, immersive ANC, and extra features. It all comes thanks to Sony’s V1 processor. The WH-1000XM5 headphones deliver a vast soundscape with plenty of oomph in the lows and fine details in the mids and highs. Sounds travels via 30mm drivers, which are supported by 360 Reality Audio and LDAC Bluetooth codecs for hi-res audio files. Best of all is the AI-powered active noise cancellation — the best you’ll get at this price, bar none. The V1 processor and Adaptive Sound control enables the ANC to react to external noise. Each can has two mini mics which adjust 700 times per second. That means noise cancellation happening in real time. There’s a Sony Headphones Connect app, too. You can customise the ANC and ambient noise levels. Even set different ANC levels for different places — at home, in the office, around the park — and geo-location tech will automatically adjust the ANC as and when you arrive in these locations.Other features include an auto-pause that kicks in whenever you remove the headphones, and Speak-to-Chat, which stops the music when you start a convo. Be warned: Speak to Chat might kick in if you sing along too loudly. Details Active Noise Cancellation: Yes App Support: Yes Battery Life: Up to 30 hours Colours: Black, Silver, Midnight Blue GET IT Apple AirPods Max Best For Apple The Good & The Bad Sync perfectly with Apple devices Lots of colours to choose from Intuitive volume control High quality sound and ANC No cable included Middling battery life Flimsy case Why We Like It We can’t notBut that’s what Apple has always done best: Evolve technology. Remember when its headphones were little wired white buds that leaked your tunes to the entire bus? They were the equivalent of the creatures that first crawled out of the sea. The Apple AirPods Max, by comparison, sit at the evolutionary peak. As with all Apple devices, they sync seamlessly within the eco-system. They combine style and substance, with stunning sound, ANC, and iOS features. They are heavier in the hand, but you’ll barely notice once they’re on your head — that's all down to efficient construction. They have just two buttons, with a button for ANC modes and a multi-functional dial for volume and playback. The battery life is a bit average and below similarly-priced headphones. But these automatically switch into low power mode when you put them in the carry case. Another small complaint is that they need to have some battery power even when they’re wired to a device.Overall, the Apple AirPods Max are fantastic, but best suited to Apple users. Android users will find them an excellent pair of noise cancelling headphones but they'll miss out on iOS-specific features. Details Active Noise Cancellation: Yes App Support: Yes Battery Life: Up to 20 hours Colours: Grey, Blue, Green, Silver, Pink GET IT JBL Tune 660NC Best For Durability £69.95 Amazon The Good & The Bad Battery life pushes up to 30 hours Very durable build Best ANC at this price Ambient mode Lacking more advanced features MicroUSB charging only Battery could be better Why We Like It JBL deserves a spot on any “best of” list, particularly for its excellent selection of mid-range headphones — affordable tech that matches big name brands by hitting that note between value and performance.  The JBL Tune 660NC are a case in point: Premium plastic cans that create a seal around your ears with their large, padded, over-ear cups. That does the basic work of blocking out external noise, before you’ve switched on the ANC — which is, in terms of price vs. performance, some of the best noise cancellation that money can buy. Just one push of the button and you’ll immediately hear (or not hear with ANC) the difference. They’re not the most expensive headphones around, but the quality is proven by how robustly they can handle the elements. JBL headphones can last literally years before you notice any signs of wear and tear. The sound is finely tuned and loaded with bass — possibly a little heavy with bass, in fact, according to some reviewers. But if bass is your thing, then it’s thumpingly good news all round. Additional features include Ambient Aware tech — which is essentially a transparency mode — plus a TalkThru feature for when you stop to chat. This lowers the music and amplifies voices. The buttons on JBL headphones can be less-than-intuitive — a bit fiddly — but you’ll soon feel your way around them. They also have a handy multi-point pairing feature, which allows you to hook these up with two devices at once. Details Active Noise Cancellation: Yes App Support: No Battery Life: Up to 20 hours Colours: Black GET IT £69.95 Amazon Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2e Best For Sound Quality The Good & The Bad Excellent sound quality High-end codec support Swish fabric design Adjustable EQ levels 'Hybrid' noise cancellation Not for throwing in your bag The premium price tag Why We Like It The Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2e Wireless look fantastic — a timeless frame with a soft fabric finish, pleather-covered memory foam on both ear cups, and a fine selection of colours — cementing the fact that high-end headphones are as much a style accessory as a piece of audio tech. But that’s not why you come to a manufacturer such as Bowers & Wilkins, which remains one of the very best names in premium quality speakers and headphones. The Px7 S2e is a continuation from the regular Px7 S2 — the “e” stands for evolved — and takes “learning and inspiration” from the even pricier Px8 model. Ultimately, they sound amazing, with audio deliver via 40mm dynamic full range bio cellulose drivers. The inclusion of the aptX Adaptive Bluetooth codec which allows glitch and lag-free listening (not to mention in-sync when streaming from Netflix and other video streaming platforms). You can also adjust your EQ levels — as well as control other features and use your phone's voice assistant — on the Bowers & Wilkins app.The noise cancellation is also very good. It’s actually “hybrid” noise cancellation, which means it has miniature mics on both the interior and exterior of the headphones, which seek out and cancel even more ambient noise. There’s the option of a passthrough transparency mode. There’s a reassuring 30 hours of battery overall, plus fast charging. Just 15-minutes of charging gives you an impressive five hours of runtime. The only downside is the price, which is steep by anyone’s standards. But as you’ll see elsewhere on this list, that’s the cost of high-quality headphones. Details Active Noise Cancellation: Yes App Support: Yes Battery Life: Up to 30 hours Colours: Black, Grey, Forest Green, Cloud Grey, Grey, Ocean Blue, Ruby Red GET IT Related Stories Grado GW100x Best For Home The Good & The Bad Incredible sound performance Naturalistic sound Extended battery life Minimalist 80s-influenced style Indoor use only Leaks sound Limited features Why We Like It Grado will likely fly under the radar of casual listeners but committed audiophiles know the Brooklyn-based brand as a top choice, particularly for their open-backed, wired designs — the mark of detailed, naturalistic audio performance. The Grado GW100x headphones are an upgrade of their first ever wireless set. But they're still a rarity as an open-backed Bluetooth headset. We recommend the Grado GW100x for exclusive home use because the open-backed ear cups leak sound both ways. You'll still be able to hear external ambient noise and people around you will also hear what you're listening to.But these days our lives are so device dependent that we're often Bluetooth'd in while we're at home — it's great to have a good set of headphones for using around the house. Especially if you appreciate the nuances of audio performance. The sound from the Grado GW100x is rich and spacious with an open soundstage — a different experience to being locked in with a pair of closed back headphones. That sound is also bolstered by aptX Bluetooth codecs.Made from plastic, they feel cheaper than the sound quality would otherwise suggest. But it’s all part of this headset’s stripped-back design. And the plastic build means they’re comfortably lightweight. Other features include a built-in mic for calls, voice assistant connectivity, on-ear controls, and fast-charging. Details Active Noise Cancellation: No App Support : No Battery life: Up to 45 hours Colours: Black GET IT Marshall Monitor III ANC Best For Battery Life The Good & The Bad Massive battery performance Industry leading sound Customisable listening Foldable design and carry case On-ear control knob Not exactly cheap Driver size has been reduced Why We Like It If there’s one audio brand synonymous with big, bold sound, it’s Marshall — instantly recognisable as the most rock 'n' roll amplifier in musical history and usually seen stacked high on the stage of epic concerts. As Marshall says itself, the sound is “iconic.” And Marshall has packed that signature sound into these highly-rated headphones, the Marshall Monitor III ANC.The sound comes via custom-tuned, scaled-down 32mm drivers, while the Marshall Bluetooth app allows you to adjust levels and customise the sound to your preference. If you’ve got a good ear for the finer details, you’ll find this app is seriously impressive: Adjustments can be subtle and detailed, with modes for all kinds of different musical genres and frequencies. It offers good sounds all round, in fact, with fantastic (not to mention adjustable) noise cancellation. The really impressive thing about the ANC is that the headphones deliver a massive 70 hours of playtime even with the ANC turned on. Without ANC they max out at a whopping 100 hours. The ANC is controlled by an on-ear button, while there's also a multi-function "M-Button" that you can customise in the app. You can set it to launch Spotify Tap, for instance. Elsewhere there's a physical knob that you use to control playback, volume, and calls. It works like a mini joystick — just flick it up, down, left, and right to use the various controls. Details Active Noise Cancellation: Yes App Support: Yes Battery Life: Up to 100 hours Colours: Black GET IT EarFun Wave Pro Best For Connectivity The Good & The Bad Hybrid ANC technology Multipoint connectivity Solid audio performance Competitive battery life Wired sound option Some budget level limitations Better sound available Why We Like It You may be familiar with the EarFun earbuds, a popular range of budget-priced buds. Well, the brand also delivers in the over-ear headphone category, as you can see — and hear, of course — with the EarFun Wave Pro, which are among the best headphones you’ll find for significantly less than £100.The most prominent feature is the hybrid noise cancellation, which is a fancy way of saying the ANC uses five mini (but powerful) mics and boasts five modes to choose from: Normal, transparency, wind cancelling, comfort ANC and strong ANC. That's a whole lotta ANC.Other than that, the audio performance is very respectable. You can can’t expect the kind of sound you’ll get from high-ticket Sonys but at this price the EarFun Wave Pro still deliver fantastic value. They also pack in mire battery life than you’ll find on more expensive ‘phones, with an impressive 55 hours with ANC switched on and 80 hours with ANC switched off.Multipoint connection is another huge bonus at this price, allowing you to connect to multiple devices at once. And everything’s customisable — whether you want to tweak the sound or ANC mode — via the EarFun App. Details Active Noise Cancellation: Yes App Support: Yes Battery Life: Up to 80 hours Colours: Black GET IT Topics Apple Bose MORE:
