  • Ubisoft lands itself a Tencent bail out worth 1,000,000,000
    metro.co.uk
The solution to Ubisofts problems? (Ubisoft)Ubisofts Assassins Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry franchises are now part of a separate company, jointly owned by Tencent. Thanks to the rather dismal 2024 that Ubisoft had, the company was deemed to be in enough financial straits to consider selling itself to Chinese conglomerate Tencent. Those discussions appeared to shift as the months went on though, with Ubisoft considering opening a new subsidiary, albeit one that Tencent would have a modicum of control over.Talks between the two companies must have gone well since then, as a subsidiary has officially been announced and will serve as the new home for Ubisofts three core franchises: Assassins Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancys Rainbow Six.Ubisoft remains mostly in charge of the subsidiary, which doesnt appear to have a name, but is said to be valued at around 4 billion (about 3.3 billion). However, Tencent has invested 1.16 billion (just under 1 billion) to acquire a 25% minority stake.According to Ubisoft, this investment will drive further increases in quality of narrative solo experiences, expand multiplayer offerings with increased frequency of content release, introduce free-to-play touchpoints, and integrate more social features. It will probably be a very long time until we actually see what impact this will have on future games and how much input Tencent will have on their direction going forward.Aside from all the teams working on new Assassins Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six games, the subsidiary includes the back catalogue and any new games currently under development or to be developed. So, it doesnt sound like any projects have been cancelled. What Ubisoft games are in development? As it stands, Ubisoft reportedly has a lot of Assassins Creed games in the works, including but not limited to Assassins Creed Hexe, which is centred around 16th century witch trials, and a remake of Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag.More TrendingMeanwhile, Far Cry is rumoured to be getting a new sequel and multiplayer spin-off, while Rainbow Six Siege will be rebranded to Rainbow Six Siege X later this year, as part of its transition into a free-to-play experience.Ubisoft has stressed that this wont mean itll be neglecting its other franchises, although it only namedrops two other Tom Clancy titles The Division and Ghost Recon as examples.Beyond that, the company is meant to be working on remakes of Splinter Cell and Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time, with only the latter having an official release date of 2026.A new Rayman project, with input from series creator Michel Ancel, has also been confirmed. And of course theres the eternally delayed Beyond Good & Evil 2, which was announced in 2017 and hasnt had any real updates in years. Do you think Beyond Good & Evil 2 is ever coming out? • 6 of the best games to help mums relax this Mothers Day

6 of the best games to help mums relax this Mothers DayTamar Hela for ArkadiumTamar Hela for ArkadiumPublished March 28, 2025 12:01pmUpdated March 28, 2025 12:01pm Its time for mum to take a break and settle in with some top free games to relax (Picture: Getty Images/Westend61)Planning on picking up some flowers and chocolates this Mothers Day? These are perennially thoughtful gifts for mothers everywhere, but do you know what could be an even more fantastic gift? Free time to unwind and escape a busy daily life!Constantly being on the go can lead to stress, burnout, and exhaustion, so mums need time to restore their energy to tackle multiple responsibilities. Thats why its a good idea for all mums to take a well-deserved break and indulge in some relaxation on Mothers Day.One of the simplest way to do that is by escaping into a fun and stress-free game online. Why not solve a calmingclassic mahjong puzzle, find outhow to play solitaire, or soothe yourself through a word game? Not only does the right game offer a much-needed mental recharge, but it could also help improve mental well-being and enhance focus. Here are our top recommendations for mums (or, hey, any parent, really!) to relax and recharge this weekend.Mothers Day MahjongLose yourself in a Mothers Day mahjong game by matching tiles. There are two versions of this game, timed and untimed, but try the latter first, as the former may add some urgency. Since the tile designs are mostly Chinese-style symbols, it may take a while for you to find a match. You must also work yourself from the outside in, meaning you must match the tiles on the edge of each layer before you get to the centre.Word WipeHeres a fun, challenging word puzzle: Word Wipe. Connect tiles of alphabets to make words and clear lines, forming any combination of nearby letters. Real words will disappear, and you can eliminate them line by line on the board. Do you need more space? Use the bombs. The timer gives you a sense of urgency and extra challenge, but you get a thrill from every line that you clear from the board.Jewel ShuffleThis is one game that can get you completely hooked. With jewels all over the board, you must match three jewels (or match four for more power), either vertically or horizontally, and meet the score quota to level up. Be warned: each level will demand higher scores. Some jewels have extra power, such as clearing the same type of jewels or eliminating surrounding jewels, so look for those sparkling ones.Daily CrosswordFor mums who love words, this daily crossword game is a must-try. Its similar to the newspapers version of the game, but this digital edition helps you by offering reveal features. You can get help by having a letter or a word revealed, but its difficulty level will still put your mind to the test. Sometimes, the descriptions are a bit vague and keep you on your toes, but thats why this game can be pretty addictive.Coloring Book for Grown-UpsIs colouring a game? Maybe yes, maybe not, but this colouring game is still a relaxing activity you can indulge in on Mothers Day. Choose one or two images or patterns, from nature-themed ones to mandalas to colour. Then, simply lose yourself in the swirl of colours. More TrendingYou are free to use any colour you like to express yourself; theres no paint-by-numbers rule you must follow. Simply colour and chill.Classic SolitaireSolitaire never gets old. Those of you who miss a classic game of solitaire must check out this one. Arrange card decks based on the shapes and colours until all four decks of hearts, spades, clubs, and diamonds are put together. If drawing one card is too easy, try the draw-three option for more challenges. No hidden surprises here, just good ol fun solitaire.Cant get enough? Try more games at Freegames at Metro. • Harry Potter video game cancelled as Hogwarts Legacy 2 becomes focus
    metro.co.uk
The Hogwarts Legacy DLC apparently would have reintegrated cut content from the base game (Warner Bros.)Warner Bros. has opted to abandon its DLC plans for Hogwarts Legacy, meaning focus will likely shift to the upcoming sequel. Its obvious that Warner Bros. is not happy with how its gaming division has been going. It didnt have a single hit in 2024, with Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League and MultiVersus both underperforming badly.Combined with Mortal Kombat 1 apparently not doing too hot either, Warner Bros. elected to shut down three whole studios and scrap its Wonder Woman game as well. The one recent success story has been 2023s Harry Potter role-player Hogwarts Legacy, but that hasnt protected it from restructuring efforts, that have led to its DLC expansion being cancelled.Although DLC was never formally announced, reliable reports from last year revealed that Hogwarts Legacy would receive a paid expansion that adds new quests, activities, and the like. This expansion would also come bundled with a new definitive edition of Hogwarts Legacy. It would certainly make sense for Warner Bros. to double down on Hogwarts Legacy, considering it smashed the companys expectations, becoming the best-selling game of 2023.A recent Bloomberg report, however, says that these DLC plans and the definitive edition, which were meant to arrive this year, have now been abandoned.According to those familiar with Warner Bros. plans, this was due to concerns that the new content wasnt enough to justify its cost. Reportedly, the DLC on its own wouldve cost between $20 and $30 (so probably 20 to 30).Its a shocking decision regardless, especially since Warner Bros. listed Harry Potter as one of the main IPs it would be focusing on going forward and re-releasing Hogwarts Legacy seems like easy money. What Harry Potter games are in development?Plans for the Hogwarts Legacy sequel apparently havent changed, with Bloomberg adding that its still in development at Avalanche Software.More TrendingIn 2023, there were rumours of a new Lego Harry Potter game being in the works; one that would cover all of the mainline movies in a similar vein to Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. However, nothing has come of these rumours so far.Given the DLC cancellation, Warner Bros. may be feeling a bit more cautious about what sort of Harry Potter games it greenlights going forward, especially since anything that uses the IP isnt guaranteed to be successful. In September 2024, Warner Bros. launched online sports game Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. Given its lack of sales figures and dwindling player count on Steam, it clearly hasnt been anywhere near as popular as Hogwarts Legacy, which still has thousands of active PC players compared to Quidditch Champions couple of hundred.A new HBO TV show based on the books is expected in 2026 or 2027 but given the problems Warner Bros. is experiencing it seems very unlikely theyll be able to support it with any new games with Hogwarts Legacy 2 thought to still be several years away. • Naughty Dog working on second game from Uncharted director says rumour
    metro.co.uk
Naughty Dog working on second game from Uncharted director says rumourMichael BeckwithPublished March 28, 2025 10:44amUpdated March 28, 2025 10:44am Uncharted: The Lost Legacy but probably not the last legacy (Sony Interactive Entertainment)Although it doesnt seem Naughty Dog has begun work on The Last Of Us Part 3, the studio does have at least one other game coming out besides Intergalactic. Its a tad shocking that Naughty Dog, one of Sonys premiere studios, hasnt released an original game since The Last Of Us Part 2 in 2020. And its still going to be a while until it does.Announced at The Game Awards 2024, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is a brand new IP, but the mostly cinematic trailer and lack of any release date suggests it is years away from launching in fact, rumours this week suggest it definitely wont be out until at least 2027.In an ideal world, Naughty Dog would have something else to keep fans occupied before then and the latest rumour implies that could be the case, with a claim that a second game at the studio has been in the works for at least three years. This rumour comes courtesy of DanielRPK, who typically shares rumours on Marvel movies but has dabbled in video game related ones as well. Just a couple of months ago, he suggested the next God Of War game will feature an Egyptian setting. In a new Patreon post (as reported by The Game Post), DanielRPK claims Naughty Dogs secret second game has been in development is being helmed by Shaun Escayg, the director of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. While he doesnt know much more than that, he has ruled out this second game being The Last Of Us Part 3 which would almost certainly be handled by series creator Neil Druckmann, if and when it happens.Naughty Dog has already confirmed that it has at least one other game on the go besides Intergalactic, which Druckmann is co-directing it alongside Matthew Gallant and Kurt Margenau. Not only that but Escayg doesnt seem to be involved with Intergalactic. Hes made no mention of it on his X or LinkedIn accounts and with him returning to Naughty Dog in 2021, to take up a creative director position (he left for a few years to helm Crystal Dynamics Avengers game), he is presumably working on a different project. So in that sense the rumour makes sense and seems to have some evidence behind it. The problem is that DanielRPKs track record with gaming related rumours has so far been pretty spotty. For example, he once claimed that a third The Last Of Us game was in the works even though Naughty Dog head Neil Druckmann had said just a month beforehand that it wasnt. What games are Naughty Dog making now?As for what Naughty Dogs other game could be, a common fan assumption is a new Uncharted. Naughty Dog and job listings have implied the series could continue, and Sony has reportedly tried to get a new game off the ground in the past.More TrendingThe problem is that Naughty Dog themselves have said theyre finished with the franchise, even if it can continue at other developers. Although that doesnt mean they couldnt change their mind.Given Escaygs experience directing The Lost Legacy, another smaller-scale game could be a possibility. A 2023 ad campaign for the PlayStation 5 even seemed to tease an Uncharted game with a female protagonist (speculated to be Nathan Drakes daughter) but nothing has come of it so far.Fans once speculated that Naughty Dog could be working on a fantasy game, which Intergalactic being sci-fi doesnt inherently dispute. Weve also seen some hoping for a new Jak & Daxter, but that seems like wishful thinking considering Naughty Dog hasnt touched the series in 20 years. How much longer till the next Naughty Dog game? • Games Inbox: Was the Nintendo Direct worth watching?
    metro.co.uk
That certainly was an odd Nintendo Direct (YouTube)The Friday letters page worries that PlayStation is ashamed of its multiformat releases, as one reader lays out his hopes for Rocksteadys new Batman game.To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.ukA good lifeWell, that Nintendo Direct was definitely one of the weirder ones weve ever had. Even the fact that it happened, just days before the Switch 2 one, is crazy and Im still not sure what the thinking was. I guess if the rumour was it was supposed to be in February something got delayed and this was just the latest they could push it back without having a Switch 1 Direct coming out after theyd just been talking about the Switch 2.I think it was good overall though and definitely worth watching. The start and end was weak, when normally theyre the biggest games, but there were plenty of nice surprises, including stuff like that multiformat Marvel game.Im still not sure why Metroid Prime 4 was randomly in the middle. Does that mean they were saving other stuff till the Switch 2 Direct or is that really going to be it for now, like that other rumour said? It was right about it being shown this week, so the source obviously knows something.I really wish the niche comeback game had been something more interesting than Tomodachi Life but what are you gonna do? At this point I dont feel theres really anything you can criticise the Switch about, given what a good life its had.GrackleHalf committedI certainly didnt have two PlayStation ports on my bingo card for the Nintendo Direct. In fact, Id have to say I didnt get anything right, except Metroid Prime 4. A weird showcase but in a good way, but the strangest thing to me is that the PlayStation Blog makes no mention of either Patapon or the new Everybodys Golf both of which are on PlayStation 5 and published by Sony.If Sony are that embarrassed about releasing multiformat games, why are they doing it? Somehow, I dont think remasters of two ancient PSP games is going to tip the scales of their back balance but apparently they want to release them but also dont want to tell anyone they exist? Its the same with Xbox and making Forza Horizon 5 physical only. These companies have got to embrace multiformat or its not going to work. You cant be ashamed of it and also have it be the cornerstone of your business. I get its not that yet for Sony, but clearly they thought this worth doing. But apparently only by half-assing it.CranstonWrong nicheWe all thought the Switch had a good line-up last year, even though it was its last big year, but its days from retirement and its still announcing games that will come out in 2026? Nintendo said it would last 10 years and now its only one year away from that and the chances of it being the best-selling console ever are even greater. All well deserved Id say, even if this latest Direct was a bit of a disappointment for me. Yes, it had a lot more games than I expected. But two niche franchises to bring back and they went for Rhythm Paradise and Tomodachi Life?! Is F-Zero really dead to them?I get it, theyre cheap games to make and not much of a risk, but its still a shame. But Ill let them off because Metroid Prime 4 looked good. At least we know F-Zero is definitely next. Right, right?!LouieEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukPlease explainSo there it is, in Nintendos own words: there will be upgraded Switch 1 games on Switch 2. It seemed obvious that they would (or rather should) do that, so Im glad to see that Nintendo isnt avoiding an open goal just because it seems obvious.Theyll probably charge too much for the upgrade, but we can only deal with that problem when they announce it properly. Im fascinated to know whats going on with Metroid Prime 4 because I agree the graphics seem impossible on the current Switch but surely Nintendo wouldnt show the upgraded version in a Direct that was specifically meant to be Switch 1 only?Maybe Retro are just even more talented than we thought but Im definitely interested in finding out more. Although Im not sure I trust Nintendo to explain it all that clearly. Thats not been their specialist subject normally. Especially that weird virtual game card thing.CustardUlterior motivesNintendo virtual game cards cant help but remind me of the Xbox One launch, when they tried to explain their convoluted sharing process, followed by Sony making fun of them. Admittedly that was worse, but not by much. The idea family members need to loan a game to each other is somewhat ridiculous.Apple came up with the easiest solution a decade ago, where family members just get access to shared purchases and to avoid abuse the organisers credit card gets used for all purchases in the family.Obviously, Nintendo are making it hard, to get people to buy multiple copies of a game, but as thats the case why even bother with virtual game cards in the first place?TimDirect analysisYou have to give it to Nintendo, they definitely know how to do an online showcase. They invented the concept of a Direct and theyve got it down to a fine art, even when theyve not got much to work with. It seems to me the secret is not lingering on anything for too long, having lots to talk about, and having a few cameos from people but no waffle or marketing talk. This Direct did all of that but compare that to a Microsoft one, which tends to have only four or five games and is filled with beauty shots of developers pretending to be happy and spontaneous, while going on for so long you just start tuning it out. Theyre also constantly doing that thing where the camera is filming them looking at a different camera, which I hate.Sonys problem is that they also dont usually have enough games, and they have no presenters at all. Often there can be no sign of a human being at all, just some AI-sounding voiceover babbling away. State of Plays are often shorter than a Nintendo Direct but they feel longer because all the segments are too long and theres too much time spent being bored. If youre not interested in something in a Nintendo Direct, like a farming sim, it doesnt matter because itll be replaced by something else thats completely different in a minute or two. Anyway, thats my analysis. I give this weeks Direct a 7/10. Lets hope next weeks is an 11.Terry GoldFake retroA good Nintendo Direct, considering its only for the current one, but the game that caught my attention the most was Marvel Cosmic Invasion. I love a good beat em-up and I am fully behind this recent spree of fake retro games with their amazing 2D animation. Marvel games can be hit and miss, in terms of whether they sell, but I hope this is a hit, mostly because itll encourage other companies to do similar things.Im still sore that amazing looking Power Rangers one didnt turn out to be as good as it looks, but Id love to see the Marvel one and others do more sprite-scaling racing and the like, to homage things like OutRun and After Burner. I love all that old stuff. Next step DC Cosmic Invasion and then Marvel vs. DC!Taylor MoonBat-slopI really hope Rocksteadys new Batman game works out, for obvious reasons of not wanting them to go bust and wanting a decent game again. Im for them starting a whole new canon though. I dont see any point in going back to the Arkham series, because then theyd have to account for all the nonsense that happened in Suicide Squad, including the non-explanation of why Bruce Wayne is back.I thought Batman Beyond was the perfect idea, but this new rumour seems to say thats not happening, which is a shame. The most important thing is just to let Rocksteady do whatever they think makes sense and dont interfere. Suicide Squad might even have worked if there wasnt all the executive interference.Although I guess Im kind of glad it failed, because that means theyll never try again and it was the quickest route to getting a proper single-player game again. I wouldnt say that if a load of people were laid off, but I dont actually think they were (most of the top staff left years ago, instead).Lets just hope theres not some other pointless gimmick or buzzword that gets big in the next few years, that will see the new game derailed as well. AI-designed Batman game, anyone?CardiInbox also-ransI knew GC would be excited about that Gradius compilation as soon as it got announced. M2 ports and a brand new game on top? I think Im pretty jazzed for it too.GalenGC: Hideki Kamiya will also be pleased, Salamander is one of his favourites.Only one farming game in the Nintendo Direct?! You can definitely tell the Switch is winding down.PrestonMore TrendingEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukThe small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend. • The new Metroid Prime 4 trailer has the best Switch graphics ever
    metro.co.uk
The new Metroid Prime 4 trailer has the best Switch graphics everGameCentralPublished March 27, 2025 4:59pmUpdated March 27, 2025 5:00pm This is the newly revealed box art for the game (Nintendo)A new trailer for Metroid Prime 4 has revealed the first details of the plot and some new gameplay mechanics, but not whether therell be a native Switch 2 version.Thursdays Nintendo Direct, for the original Switch, was strange for any number of reasons, not least because that the long-anticipated Switch 2 Direct is only next week. That and the fact that the most notable new announcements were two former PlayStation exclusives coming to Switch and the return of two super obscure Nintendo franchises. If there was one game that was almost certain to be featured though it was Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which many suspect will be a launch title for the Switch 2 if only via backwards compatibility. The Nintendo Direct did nothing to discredit that theory, as the game still doesnt have a release date, just sometime this year. But theres still no hint of whether it will have a dedicated Switch 2 version, as well as a Switch 1 edition. It was the Switch 1 version that was apparently being shown in the new trailer, but the graphics looked so good many suspect, just as they did with the debut trailer, that its really Switch 2 footage.Thats presumably not the case Nintendo is very unlikely to outright lie about such a thing but the game look considerably better than any other Switch title, including the likes of Luigis Mansion 3.Its possible the footage being shown is the Switch 2 playing the Switch 1 version, and adding some enhancements on top but, again, if that was the case Nintendo would probably just say so.Apart from looking amazing, the main thing to be discerned from the trailer is that the plot of the game involves Samus being trapped on the jungle planet of Viewros. The previous trailer clearly showed space pirates, and rival bounty hunter Sylux, but in this one it was just angry alien lifeforms. The footage was likely from the opening sections of the game, before the main plot kicks in, but it did reveal one of the games main new gimmicks: psychic powers for Samus.Whether that means she has her usual gadgets from the start isnt clear, but her abilities involve operate alien mechanisms, opening doors, and controlling the trajectory of her beam weapons. So basically, she can use the Force now.The end of the trailer shows what we think is Samus in a new red and black suit. It could conceivably be one of the various evil versions of Samus, that have been in previous games, but we think it was just meant to be a new suit although it was unclear what new abilities it might confer.Apart from the psychic abilities the trailer didnt reveal much, other than that the game continues to look incredible, so whether well get additional information next week, at the Switch 2 Direct, is unclear. What does the Pokmon Legends: Z-A name mean? The only other big name first party game during the Direct was Pokmon Legends: Z-A, which was a bit of a surprise, as usually new games are only shown off during dedicated Pokmon Presents showcases.More TrendingZ-A continues to look good, with the semi real-time combat being an interesting twist to the formula. As with Metroid, there wasnt an awful lot of significant new information, but Nintendo did reveal that at night youll be able to battle with other trainers. This is when you can compete in the Z-A Royale tournament, where you work up the ranks from Z to A, with anyone that goes all the way having their wish granted. However, if your wish is a native Switch 2 version its unclear if that will be granted. As with Metroid Prime 4 there was no indication that thered be a dedicated next gen edition, and it may be that both games only work on Switch 2 via backwards compatibility. • Nintendo accidentally confirms upgraded Switch 1 games for Switch 2
    metro.co.uk
Nintendo accidentally confirms upgraded Switch 1 games for Switch 2Michael BeckwithPublished March 27, 2025 6:43pmUpdated March 27, 2025 6:43pm Does Metroid Prime 4 come in two flavours: Switch 1 and Switch 2? (Nintendo)A next gen version of Metroid Prime 4 just became much more likely, as an official Nintendo web page says Switch 2 Edition games will be a thing. While the Nintendo Switch 2 is confirmed to have backwards compatibility, ensuring most Switch 1 games can run on the new hardware, its suspected that some Switch games could see enhanced Switch 2 versions as well.Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is at the centre of this theory. Despite only being confirmed for Switch 1, the graphics seen in the newest trailer seem to be too good for it not to be running on more powerful hardware.Nintendo will hopefully provide a more concrete answer soon (probably at next weeks Switch 2 showcase) but, in the meantime, it has let slip that enhanced versions of certain games are indeed in the pipeline. The information comes courtesy of the web page for the virtual game cards announced in Thursdays Nintendo Direct, which are designed to allow Switch owners to more easily share their digital games with Nintendo Account family group members and other Switch consoles.Tucked away at the very bottom is some fine print that mentions how Switch 2 exclusive games will only work on Switch 2, effectively confirming that theyll be getting these virtual game cards too.All that is as youd expect, but Nintendo says this also applies to Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games. You can see it for yourself on the web page but, just in case, weve included a screenshot should Nintendo delete that text by the time you read this.We struggle to think what else a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game could be, except an enhanced port of a Switch 1 game, designed exclusively for the Switch 2. And if Nintendo has an official name for it, that points to there being multiple examples of it. Nintendo probably didnt mean to reveal this year (Nintendo)Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is the most obvious example. Aside from the graphics, Nintendo remains coy about giving it an exact release date, which could point to the company wanting to wait until it confirms the games presence on Switch 2, making it a cross-gen title. The same could be said for Pokmon Legends Z-A, which is due for Switch 1 in late 2025. But then again, its also been claimed that there are no plans to bring any Pokmon games to Switch 2 this year.More TrendingIt is possible that some Switch 1 games will simply run better when played on Switch 2. Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, for example, was discovered to have a hidden 60fps mode that doesnt work on such, but may well do so on Switch 2.But Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games (complete with a capital E) sounds like something Nintendo intends to put in promotional material, highlighting how such games arent simple re-releases but dedicated Switch 2 versions with new bells and whistles.Considering how Nintendo has treated Wii U ports over the last eight years it must seem very tempting for them to create Switch 2 Editions for many of their most prominent Switch 1 titles. How this will work if you own an original copy of the game remains to be seen but, rather than being free, its much more likely it involves some kind of fee. Metroid Prime 4 looks too good to just be a regular Switch game (Nintendo)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.GameCentralSign up for exclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. Every trailer and everything you need to know from Nintendo Direct March 2025Michael BeckwithPublished March 27, 2025 5:58pmUpdated March 27, 2025 5:58pm An awful lot happened with Nintendo today (YouTube)GameCentral runs through all the key reveals from the Switch 1 focused Nintendo Direct, from the next Dragon Quest remake to a brand new Gradius game. With all of Nintendos big name reveals being saved for next weeks Nintendo Switch 2 showcase, it was peculiar to learn the company also had a Nintendo Direct for the Switch 1 scheduled for Thursday.Once it was announced, speculation ran rampant for what could be featured. Metroid Prime 4 was a given, as one of the only first party Switch titles left for 2025, but other popular rumours included a Kirby: Planet Robobot remaster, something Super Smash Bros. related, and a new trailer for Silksong. Those rumours didnt prove correct but others, such as the return of a beloved niche franchise, did. In case you missed it and need catching up, heres every announcement Nintendo made during the showcase.Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D RemakeThis had already been announced ahead of the release of the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, but the first two Dragon Quest games will be getting the same treatment. The trailer appears to tease a brand new party member, with the game slated only for a 2025 release. No Sleep For Kaname Date From AI The Somnium FilesThe third entry in the AI The Somnium Files series, this sees the first games protagonist, Date, return to the spotlight, to rescue a kidnapped internet idol. While it retains the series investigation mechanics and dream world puzzle sections, itll also feature traditional escape rooms when it launches on July 25.RAIDOU Remastered: The Mystery Of The Soulless ArmyIts not Persona 6, but Shin Megami Tensei fans are being treated to another Atlus remaster. Unlike Shin Megami Tensei 5, this is an action role-playing game, but youll still be summoning demons to aid you in battle when this game launches on June 19.Shadow LabyrinthAnnounced during The Game Awards 2024, this 2D Metroidvania is essentially a grittier, almost horror themed take on Pac-Man. Launching on July 18, youll be fighting and munching on all manner of bizarre monsters with the aid of a yellow orb called Puck.Patapon 1+2 ReplayOne of two PlayStation properties to appear during the Direct, Patapon 1+2 Replay is a collection of the first two entries in Sonys quirky rhythm game series for the PlayStation Portable. It launches on July 11 for Switch, as well as PlayStation 5 and PC.Story Of Seasons: Grand BazaarThere was only one farming game announced at this months Direct, namely the newest entry in the Story Of Seasons series (formerly known as Harvest Moon). Titled Story Of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, it promises all the usual hallmarks and is slated to launch on August 27.Metroid Prime 4: BeyondNew gameplay for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond shows off its fantastic visuals and fancy new psychic powers for Samus, including the ability to change the trajectory of her shots. Strangely, Nintendo still wont specify when the game launches this year, fuelling the theories that its a Switch 2 launch title.Disney Villains Cursed CafSomeone at Disney must really like indie visual novel Coffee Talk because the company has made its own take on the idea; one that has you making and serving potions for a variety of classic Disney villains. Its slated to drop on Switch later today.WitchbrookHogwarts Legacy 2s not going to be out any time soon, but indie studio Chucklefish is offering the next best thing: Witchbrook. Described as a witch life sim, you can craft potions, run your own business, and play with friends when it launches this winter. The Eternal Life Of GoldmanA new 2D platformer from This Is The Police developer Weappy Studio, The Eternal Life Of Goldman sports some lovely looking animation and some obvious influences from the DuckTales NES game. It launches this winter.Gradius OriginsOne of our personal highlights of the Direct, Gradius Origins brings together multiple versions of six classic arcade shooters from Konami. Most excitingly of all though the compilation includes a brand new game: Salamander 3. The arcade conversions are by M2, who are the best of the best when it comes to this sort of thing, but were not clear whos making the new game. Well hopefully know more before its launch on August 7.Rift Of The NecrodancerA spin-off of Crypt Of The Necrodancer, this game ditches the roguelike elements and is a pure rhythm action game. It already launched for PC last month but is out now for Switch alongside a DLC crossover with Celeste.Tamagotchi PlazaDescribed as a continuation of the Tamagotchi Connection series from the days of the Nintendo DS, Tamagotchi Plaza is a new life sim that sees you run your own store. It will feature over 100 Tamagotchi characters and launches on June 27.Pokmon Legends Z-ANintendos other big Switch game for 2025 saw new gameplay footage, revealing night-time trainer battles and the Z-A Royale tournament. Still no word of an exact release date or a dedicated Switch 2 version.Rhythm Paradise GrooveThere was a rumour Nintendo would announce a new entry in one of its more niche franchises, but instead the company revealed two of them. The first is a new Rhythm Paradise game called Rhythm Paradise Groove, with its collection of rhythm mini-games slated for 2026.Virtual Game CardsNintendo didnt just have new games to share. It also unveiled Virtual Game Cards, which serve as a new method for sharing your games across multiple Switch consoles. You can also lend them to friends, although only for two weeks at a time. It arrives in late April (which also hints at a June launch for the Switch 2).SaGa Frontier 2 RemasteredSquare Enix continues to make older entries in its SaGa series of role-playing games more readily available, with this remaster of 1999s SaGa Frontier 2. Originally made for the PS1, this remaster features updated visuals and new story scenarios and is available as of today.Monument ValleyAll three of the delightful Monument Valley puzzle games are slated for Switch later this year. The first two games will arrive on April 15 while Monument Valley 3, which was initially exclusive to Netflix, will follow in the summer.Everybodys Golf Hot ShotsThe other surprise PlayStation related announcement, Everybodys Golf is getting its first new entry in years and its going multiplatform. Amusingly titled Everybodys Golf Hot Shots (Hot Shots Golf is what the series was called in the US), Bandai Namco is publishing it for Switch (as well as Patapon) while Sony handles bringing it to PlayStation 5 and PC.Marvel Cosmic InvasionOne of the best third party surprises of the Direct was this brand new 2D scrolling beat em-up from DotEmu, makers of the excellent Streets Of Rage 4. To be honest you almost dont need to know any more than that, given that pedigree, but the game features 15 characters, with the ability to tag team between two of them at any time. The main bad guy appears to be Annihilus, who is primarily a Fantastic Four villain. The game will be out this winter on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, as well as Switch.Tomodachi Life: Living the DreamThe final game reveal of the Direct turned out to be a new entry in Nintendos series of life sims starring the Miis. Scheduled for 2026, Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream looks just as wacky as previous games though we hope it offers more interactivity than its predecessors. Will you be using the app? (YouTube)Nintendo Today! The actual final announcement of the Direct was not for a new game but Nintendos own bespoke news app called Nintendo Today! Doubling as a calendar, its a way for Nintendo to deliver updates and announcements directly to its fans. Its available right now on iOS and Android, but only for those with a Nintendo account.Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. • Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order details leaked but theres confusion over the date
    metro.co.uk
Best Buy are not in Nintendos best books (Nintendo)A leak that seemed to reveal when pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 will start may not be as reliable as it first seemed. When a new game or console is announced theres only one thing publishers are interested in: pre-orders. The lack of them, in the immediate aftermath of the Xbox Ones reveal, put Microsoft into a tailspin they still havent got out of, and similar problems have rushed many other companies to panic stations, if a game doesnt seem to be immediately attracting customers.Thats very unlikely to be a problem for the Nintendo Switch 2 but the question of when pre-orders will start is a very important question, and it certainly wasnt addressed in Thursdays Nintendo Direct. Although it may be announced at the Switch 2 focused one next week. Its very likely the new consoles release date will be announced at the Switch 2 Direct, reasonably likely the price will be, but its probably no more than 50/50 when it comes to pre-orders. And the situation hasnt really been clarified by a leak from Best Buy in Canada. When it comes to consoles, sometimes it takes a few days, or even weeks, for a company to start offering pre-orders but Best Buy accidentally put up a detailed blog stating that pre-orders will open on April 2, i.e. the day of the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct. How to pre-order the Nintendo Switch 2That all seemed perfectly believable and the fact that Best Buy quickly took the blog page down, when they realised theyd jumped the gun/got an angry call from Nintendo, seemed to seal the deal.More TrendingHowever, respected insider Wario64 says that one of his retail sources claims the April 2 is an error. Although they dont indicate when the real date is.Pre-orders are likely to go up at the same time around the world, at least in major markets such as Canada and the UK, but despite this leak its still uncertain when exactly that will be.The most common rumour for the Nintendo Switchs release date is sometime in or around June, so if thats correct then even if pre-orders dont start on April 2, it wont be too much after that. Did Best Buy get the date wrong? • Two PlayStation exclusives coming to Nintendo Switch as Sony goes multiformat
    metro.co.uk
Two PlayStation exclusives coming to Nintendo Switch as Sony goes multiformatGameCentralPublished March 27, 2025 3:28pmUpdated March 27, 2025 3:28pm Now that was unexpected (Bandai Namco)The Switch 1 Nintendo Direct has been party to some shock announcements, as Sony follows Xboxs lead in terms of multiformat releases.Nobody knew what to expect from Thursdays surprise Nintendo Direct, which was focused on the original Switch console, but going in there were some vague rumours, the two main ones of which turned out to be true. One suggested that Nintendo was bringing back a niche franchise, which they are (in fact, theyre bringing back two) and another that there would be a game that will cause a lot of conversation and its not necessarily a Nintendo one. That also turned out to be true. But while some had speculated that it would prove to be an Xbox exclusive, perhaps Halo, that wasnt the case at all. Instead, it was two former PlayStation exclusives: Patapon and Everybodys Golf. The irony is, there were no Microsoft games featured at all, in the 30 minute long showcase. Instead, the first annoucement was Patapon 1+2 Replay, which will be released on PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.Itll be published by Bandai Namco on Switch, so that will mean that, like Lego Horizon Adventures, Sony themselves wont be publishing games on a rival format. Although you can see their copyright details onscreen in the Nintendo Direct. It was thought that Lego Horizon Adventures may have been an exception, since Sony wanted to widen the audience for the Horizon franchise and they knew a Lego game would sell better on the Switch (in fact, the game was a flop on every format). But now we see that it was actually the vanguard of a new policy. Although, as with everything from Sony in the last few years, they havent actually communicated what theyre doing and theres no clue what, if any, other games will also be going multiformat. As with Lego Horizon Adventures, the two games will not be released on Xbox. The implication is that Sony sees Nintendo as less of a direct rival, although the declining sales of Xbox hardware probably made that a relatively easy decision. The first two Patapon games were originally released for the PSP in the mid-2000s and are a well regarded mixture of rhythm action and real-time strategy, as you control a tribe of warlike beings as the fight from left to right across the screen.Although the games are fondly remembered by many (theres an indie homage called Ratatan due out this year) they were never massive sellers, with 2011s Patapon 3 being the final entry. As for Everybodys Golf, thats been a PlayStation exclusive since 1997, originally developed by Mario Golf creators Camelot and thereafter by Clap Hanz.More TrendingThe PlayStation 5 is the first Sony console not to have a new mainline entry but thats presumably what Everybodys Golf Hot Shots is intended to be.Itll be released for PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch, although again the Switch version will be published by Bandai Namco.Everybodys Golf Hot Shots doesnt have a release date but Patapon 1+2 Replay will launch on July 11 (July 10 on PC). • Nintendo really is bringing back two niche franchises for Switch in 2026
    metro.co.uk
Did anybody have these on their bingo card? (YouTube)Rumours of a niche Nintendo franchise being brought back for the original Switch have proven true in fact theres going to be two of them. With the Nintendo Switch 2 showcase happening next week, the annoucement of a surprise Nintendo Direct for the current Switch, on Thursday, was something of a shock.Although, when rumours of a Switch 1 focused showcase first made the rounds last month, it was suggested that Nintendos big announcement would be a new entry in a beloved niche franchise.Turns out that wasnt entirely accurate. Not because an announcement didnt take place, but because Nintendo is bringing back not one but two of its lesser-known franchises to Switch. The first is Rhythm Paradise (aka Rhythm Heaven and RhythmTengoku), which is a series of quirky rhythm games thats been around since 2006. While weve always prefered Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, Rhythm Paradise is still an incredibly charming series and one deserving of a new game.Entries have been few and far between though, with the most recent entry being 2016s Rhythm Heaven Megamix for the Nintendo 3DS. The series was long overdue a Switch entry and now its getting one with Rhythm Paradise Groove. The second comeback is even more of a surprise and something Nintendo deemed worthy of serving up as the final game reveal of the Direct: a Tomodachi Life sequel. If youre unfamiliar with it, Tomodachi Life is kind of like Nintendos take on The Sims, but with the Mii characters. Its only ever had two games (one of which was Japanese only), with the last one coming out for the 3DS in 2014.While amusing in places, we werent particularly enamoured with it due to how little interaction it offered. But its not without its fans and Nintendo clearly thinks theres enough of an audience to give it a Switch sequel. What is Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream on Nintendo Switch?Titled Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream, it promises to retain the same wacky sense of humour, although it looks like it could have a larger scale than its predecessor, thanks to its new island setting. At the very least, it should feature an option for same sex romances between Miis. This was something the 3DS game omitted, which drew enough controversy for Nintendo to promise it would rectify this if it ever made a sequel.More TrendingInterestingly, both games are slated for 2026, even though the Switch 2 will be out later this year, possibly in June. This just goes to show that Nintendo wont be completely ditching the original Switch any time soon; something it had already promised beforehand.Theres been no mention of whether the two games will see dedicated Switch 2 versions, although they probably dont need them since theyre not the most graphically intensive of games.Aside from these two, the only other Switch 1 games Nintendo has left are Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokmon Legends Z-A. Both games also appeared during todays Direct, but they still dont have exact release dates.Other surprise announcements included ports of the first two Patapon games and a new Everybodys Golf; both of which are PlayStation franchises published by Sony. These guys look like how Smash Bros. and Zelda fans must feel right now (YouTube)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. • Rocksteadys new Batman game is coming to PS6 and next gen Xbox
    metro.co.uk
Its not officially confirmed but, after Suicide Squad, going back to Batman makes perfect sense (Warner Bros.)The next Batman game from Arkham Knight developer Rocksteady is hiring new staff and the job ads give away quite a bit of information. After Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League flopped hard for Warner Bros., developer Rocksteady is reportedly going back to what it does best, with a new single-player Batman game.Exact details are unsurprisingly nebulous, but its been described as being years away from landing. Theres also no telling if it will be a continuation of the Arkham series (like VR game Arkham Shadow, although that was technically a prequel) or something that ties into James Gunns plans for his DC cinematic universe. There are two details that Warner Bros. appears to have accidentally confirmed though: it will be a multiplatform title (which seems to disprove the rumour of it being a PlayStation 5 exclusive based on Batman Beyond) and its preparing to launch for the PlayStation 6 and next Xbox console. This is according to the industrys most reliable source of leaks: a new job listing, in this case for a senior core engine programmer at Rocksteady that was posted over a month ago but only recently spotted.Admittedly, the job listing doesnt mention Rocksteadys next game being Batman related at all (only referring to an upcoming unannounced AAA title), but that is the common assumption, and one asserted by Bloomberg when it recently reported on Warner Bros. gaming woes.Whatever the game is, its being built with Unreal Engine 5 and targeting the next generation of consoles as well as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (and maybe Switch 2), making it a cross-gen title.Considering the game isnt expected to come out for several years, this makes perfect sense. Microsoft has already begun teasing new Xbox hardware and while Sonys been more coy with the PlayStation 6, its rumoured to be launching in 2027 or 2028.It would be a bad look if Rocksteadys next game was stuck to what will be last gen hardware by then. But, since its unlikely everyone will immediately upgrade to the newer consoles, the studio will want its game on older platforms too, to reach as wide an audience as possible.More TrendingRocksteady is certainly in need of a win. Suicide Squad was clearly intended to be a long-running live service game, with years of ongoing updates, but a middling reception and poor sales led to its plug being hastily pulled and a very abrupt ending.Combined with the failures of fighting game MultiVersus and Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, Warner Bros. has enacted a purge of its gaming division and shut down three studios.Among them were Monolith Productions, with its Wonder Woman game dying with it, and MultiVersus developer Player First Games, which Warner Bros. had only acquired last July. Batman already came back for Suicide Squad so an Arkham Knight sequel isnt impossible (Warner Bros. • Obsessive Nintendo Switch 2 fans are getting hyped over footage of a building
    metro.co.uk
Only a week to go (TikTok)With only a week to go until the first of the Nintendo Switch 2 live events, fans have spotted that preparations have begun.People were already obsessed with the Nintendo Switch 2 before Nintendo formally announced the thing, but things got even more out of control when details started leaking at the end of 2024.The January reveal only heightened fans excitement and while Nintendo has kept quiet on the specifics, plenty have made educated guesses about the Switch 2s price tag and release date, with June 2025 being the prevailing theory. Some lucky individuals will get to go hands-on with the new console through upcoming live events, which Nintendo is confirmed to have begun setting up, at least in New York. The proof comes from video footage posted to TikTok and then shared on the Nintendo Switch 2 subreddit, which is taken from outside the Center415 building, where Nintendo will be holding its New York event. The inside is decorated with Switch 2 branding and there are large wooden crates that may be full of Switch 2 consoles, if not other paraphernalia and equipment thats yet to be set up.This is enough to get some fans excited, if only because its a reminder that the Switch 2 is inching closer to release. Or at least that more official details will emerge once event attendees get their hands on the console. When does the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience take place? As a reminder, the New York event is one of the first to be taking place, alongside an event in Paris, from April 4 to April 6, which is the weekend after the big Switch 2 showcase Nintendo has scheduled.A bunch of these will be taking place worldwide, including one in London from April 11 to April 13. Theyre set to run all the way into June, which lends credence to the idea that the Switch 2 will be out this the summer. Will you be attending the London event? (Nintendo)How to get into the Nintendo Switch 2 ExperienceIf youre wondering how you can attend the event, sadly the answer is that you cant. Not unless youve already been invited. Nintendo is keeping attendance limited, having only offered fans the chance to register for in January. So, only those who were selected will be allowed in.More TrendingHowever, you can add yourself to a waitlist in the event someone cancels, and their ticket becomes available. Some people have tried to sell their tickets on eBay but theres no point spending any money on them since Nintendo states the tickets are non-transferable, meaning youd be denied entry. Before any further Switch 2 reveals, fans have a new Nintendo Direct dedicated to the original Switch to get through. Its airing on Thursday at 2pm GMT.Itll likely to have new info to share for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which is scheduled for a 2025 launch, but other rumours/theories include a Kirby: Planet Robobot remaster and an announcement for the long rumoured re-releases of The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. More Zelda re-releases have been rumoured since 2021 (Nintendo)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. • Smash Bros. rumoured for todays Nintendo Direct after director hints at reveal
    metro.co.uk
Is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Deluxe happening? (Nintendo)Fan expectations are through the roof for todays Nintendo Direct, with theories including a Smash Bros. rerelease and a Halo port.Despite the big Nintendo Switch 2 showcase happening next week, Nintendo still wants to give the original Switch some love, with a shorter but no less intriguing showcase scheduled for later today.Officially, theres no clue at all as to what the Direct will talk about other than therell be no new Switch 2 news but one obvious guess is Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, with other rumours including a Kirby: Planet Robobot remaster and a new entry in a niche beloved franchise.Nothing concrete has leaked ahead of time (yet), but fans do have some theories, especially after Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai retweeted Nintendos announcement.Sakurais comment seems to have been lost in translation since, according to Xs auto translate feature, all he wrote was the word method. However, those that can speak Japanese suggest its actually the equivalent of HmmmThats not much to go on, but Sakurai must know that even just mentioning the Nintendo Direct is going to send fans into a frenzy, especially since hes already confirmed to be working on a new game. However, youd think his next project would be saved for the Switch 2. So, if Sakurai is meant to be hinting at something, perhaps its a remaster or re-release of one of his older games. Many are, naturally, suspecting/wishing for something related to Super Smash Bros., be it a new game or more DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.Professional Smash player Juan Manuel DeBiedma, better known as Hungrybox, claims it will be a deluxe edition of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, sharing a post he made in 2023 claiming an Ultimate Deluxe would launch in 2025 and include 10 new characters.Although he says he wont say more in case Nintendo ninjas me, its unclear if this is based on insider knowledge or just his assumptions.Another fan theory is that well see a remaster of 3DS game Kid Icarus: Uprising, which Sakurai directed.Given the originals reliance on stylus controls, we suspect such a remaster would be a better fit for Switch 2, since it will feature mouse controls that are perfectly suited for Uprisings gameplay.Elsewhere, Giant Bombs Jeff Grubb has claimed, in a recent YouTube video, that hes heard theres gonna be a game that will cause a lot of conversation and its not necessarily a Nintendo one.More TrendingIt being a third party game doesnt narrow it down that much but it has emboldened the theories that Hollow Knight sequel Silksong could finally make a reappearance. Some fans also think it could be Halo. It has previously been claimed that Microsoft will bring Halo: The Master Chief Collection to Switch 2, but theres also been chatter of a remaster or remake of the first Halo being in the works for Xbox and PlayStation 5.That would likely also come to Switch 2 and if thats the case it would make more sense to release the existing remasters on Switch 1 first. As a reminder, todays Nintendo Direct will air at 2pm GMT and run for approximately 30 minutes. Halo on Switch would definitely get people talking (Microsoft)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. • The First Berserker: Khazan review the best Soulslike of 2025
    metro.co.uk
The First Berserker: Khazan all its lacking is some new ideas (Nexon)A spin-off from the Dungeon & Fighter series proves to be one of the best new action role-players of recent years, with influences from Nioh and Sekiro. If you dont know what Dungeon Fighter Online (aka Dungeon & Fighter, aka DNF) is then The First Berserker: Khazan must seem like the most generic-sounding and uninteresting game imaginable, based solely on the name. It certainly doesnt make it obvious what the game is, in terms of either its parent franchise or its gameplay, but in short it is a Soulslike and a pretty good one at that.Dungeon & Fighter is far less popular in the West than in its homeland of South Korea but 2022s DNF Duel, by the always excellent Arc System Works, was a very good fighting game spin-off. It wasnt very original though and in that sense it has a lot in common with Khazan, since it does many familiar things very well but never invents anything significant for itself. Were not very familiar with the background lore of the series but Khazan is one of the more prominent characters and naturally this standalone title busies itself with explaining his backstory. It has all the predictable tropes of the Soulslike genre, from bonfires where you can save your game to a sky high difficulty level, but once you accept this isnt going to reinvent the wheel it becomes easier to appreciate the games impressive workmanship. While there are clear influences from a number of FromSoftware titles, Khazan is actually closest to the consistently underrated Nioh duology. Instead of a tightly designed, interconnected world, as in Dark Souls et al., the game is level-based, with the way skills and loot work being very similar to Team Ninjas games.Where its also like Nioh is that the story is completely forgettable, with Khazan being betrayed and accused of being a traitor, before being tortured almost to death and left to expire on a freezing cold mountaintop. He survives thanks to a mysterious character called Blade Phantom, who grants him access to various magical abilities, before setting off on the road to revenge.Although the game is structurally similar to Nioh the combat is closer to Froms Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, when it comes to its heavy reliance on blocking and parrying. Youve got a dodge as well, but its even more difficult to avoid a flurry of attacks with that, especially as all the moves are governed by a quickly depleted stamina bar.Enemies have the same type of bar and so battles revolve around trying to tire your opponent and break their stance, so you can get in and do some real damage. Chipping away with normal attacks will rarely win the day and instead you need to block and dodge consistently and wait for your chance, ideally by performing a block at the exact right moment to trigger a Brink Guard. This makes combat very defensive but that feels more realistic despite the various fantasy monsters that youre fighting and tactical, as youre constantly probing your enemys defences and balancing your stamina to strike at the optimum moment. Its difficult, theres no question about that, but hugely rewarding when you get it right. But if its too much for you there is, unusually for a Soulslike, an easy mode.Therere only three weapons a sword and axe combo, an even bigger sword, and a spear but each has its own skill tree and they all feel very different, with their own specialities, buffs, and magical abilities many of which can be chained together into increasingly lengthy combos. The randomised nature of the loot you collect can be frustrating, but you eventually unlock the ability to craft exactly what you want, if you dont find it naturally. Although even then, theres so much gear to maintain and upgrade it can feel like busywork at times. Unusually, there is an easy mode (Nexon)The level design is fine, if rather inconsistent, with some levels edging into open world territory but a lot of the others lacking any interesting exploration. That doesnt mean there arent hidden secrets though, with the most useful allowing you to increase all your stats at once. As with Nioh, there are optional side quests set in levels youve already visited but the second (and third time) is rarely the charm.More TrendingSurprisingly for a Soulslike, theres no co-op or multiplayer of any kind but you can make use of computer-controlled allies, which can be summoned to help with tougher fighters and can be upgraded by fighting evil versions of themselves.Although its not very obvious in most of the screenshots, Khazan has a very attractive cel-shaded art style. Its not trying to look like anime, as its generally too detailed for that, but manages to strike a very effective balance between looking unique and still maintaining a dark, foreboding atmosphere. At times it goes overboard with the lack of colour but in general its a very nice looking game.Apart from the visuals though, Khazan is all about the combat and the boss encounters and while that side of things is all very good its really just a mash-up of Sekiro and Nioh, with both of those being better games overall. It is the best Soulslike so far this year though and hopefully, if it does well, a sequel can be more ambitious with moving things forward instead of just echoing what already exists. The First Berserker: Khazan review summaryIn Short: A very competent Soulslike, with excellent combat and an attractive art style its just a shame it barely even tries to do anything new.Pros: The combat is top notch, with some great boss battles. Lots of customisation options (including an easy mode) and tons of content. Interesting art style, even if it can be a bit monochromatic at times.Cons: Theres very little in terms of new ideas and the level design can often be quite bland. Upgrading and maintaining your gear can become a chore. Unengaging storytelling and characters.Score: 7/10Formats: PlayStation 5 (reviewed), Xbox Series X/S, and PCPrice: 49.99Publisher: NexonDeveloper: NeopleRelease Date: 27th March 2025Age Rating: 16 The graphics could do with a bit more colour (Nexon)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. • Games Inbox: What games will be in todays Nintendo Direct?
    metro.co.uk
Will we see more of Metroid Prime 4 today? (Nintendo)The Thursday letters page is convinced a new Donkey Kong game is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, as one reader worries when the new The Witcher trilogy will be completed. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.ukFarewell giftWell, I wouldnt have betted on that. All the rumours were true and there really is going to be a Switch 1 Direct this week. The dangers of casual gamers mistaking it for next weeks Direct seem obvious, but I guess Nintendo, in their wisdom, dont think its an issue.Who knows what theyre going to talk about, but I really, really hope its going to be that fan service game because I love the idea of Nintendo saying goodbye to the Switch with a game they know probably wont sell well but is a chance to bring back a forgotten franchise.Thats the dream anyway. More likely though itll just be some remasters and a bunch of third party and indie games, but they must have something in mind to bother doing this, so Im guessing it can only be Metroid Prime 4. But Im not sure.I love that I dont know though. People were saying its neat that we dont know what to expect next week but now weve got a Switch 1 event and weve no idea whats going on there either, even before we get to the new console!BanfreeStrange timingI am shocked that the rumours about a Switch 1 Direct this week turned out to be true. I have no idea what its about or why Nintendo has done it. But its such a weird thing to do, given next week, that I can only assume that it must be for a very specific reason. They say they wont be talking about the Switch 2, but this must have something to do with it, whether its Metroid Prime 4 being cross-gen or backwards compatibly or something else. Maybe they wont make the connection obvious this week, but its got to be related. You dont have two Directs less than a week apart and there not be connection between them. Because if there isnt, why do it now? There are no Switch 1 games coming out soon, so they couldve done this weeks Direct at any time, if there wasnt a special reason for it being now.OnibeeLong storyIm not sure anyone expected The Witcher 4 to be released next year but 2027 is earlier than I thought so Ill take it, even if I doubt it will be out by then. Lets say there is a new trilogy though, when is it going to be completed? Assume each game takes a minimum of five years to make, it wont be done until 2037. Ill be retired by then!I dont think some gamers have quite caught on to how long games take to make now. We probably wont get the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy finished until around 2028 and it started in 2015! And thats for a remake, where a lot of the groundwork is already done for you.Im not saying this is anyones fault in particular but I think we should probably lay off trilogies until things catch up and maybe AI can help. I dont want to literally die of old age before a story is finished. The BishopEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukWork and playJust found out that the CEO and co-owner of the makers of Atomfall (as well as the Sniper Elite series and owners of 2000AD) is the same bloke that Ive been binge watching on YouTube recently: Jason Kingsley. He runs a channel called Modern History TV that delves into the medieval era, its really interesting (if you like your history) and he obviously has a passion for the subject. He also does medieval reenactment shows, jousting and the like.OK, not strictly gaming related but I found it interesting and shows not all CEOs sit behind a desk all day counting their money and twiddling their moustache in a malevolent way.TheTruthSoul (PSN ID)GC: Weve met him a couple of times and asked why he doesnt use his passion for the era to make a game, but he didnt really have an answer. Maybe he subconsciously wants to maintain a divide between work and his hobbies.Donkey magicSurely there has to be something Donkey Kong related during at least one of the two(!) upcoming Nintendo Directs.Nintendo have been very proactive in keeping him in the public consciousness, with rereleases and remakes, recently-unveiled Nike trainers (if youve yet to see them, theyre hideous), and probably a bunch more stuff Ive forgotten or dont know about.Considering how prominent and popular he was in the movie, and the amount of real estate he has in Nintendos theme parks, Im willing to bet well see a brand spanking new Donkey Kong in the next two weeks.ANONGC: If it was anyone other than Nintendo wed say its almost certain. Even knowing its them, wed say its very likely. No competitionIm looking forward to GTA 6 as much as the next person but I cant help thinking that a game having that much influence on the industry, to the point where every other game, and probably even the Switch 2, is rushing to get out of its way.Hard to pin the blame on anyone in particular but if theres one thing gaming needs less of its giant entities blocking out the sun for everyone else and making not just competition impossible but even basic existence.I certainly cant blame Rockstar for being popular, but I do think it shows how foolish other companies have been in not trying to create any kind of competitor. GTA clones havent been a thing for at least 10 or 15 years now, and yet I can think of plenty of them that were pretty popular, like Sleeping Dogs, Saints Row (pre-reboot), and The Simpsons: Hit & Run.They might not be the biggest games ever, but they all seemed to sell well and review well so why did they stop? As usual, it seems like the all or nothing approach has blinded publishers. Their clones werent as big as GTA, so they just gave up and now thats left the field open to Rockstar to make it almost impossible for anyone to rival them, whether they want to try or not.Competition is good and theres so little of it in the games industry now that its really beginning to worry me.BensonThe sweet blood, oh, it sings to meI was thinking a great place for Assassins Creed to go would be 17th Century Edinburgh, during the bubonic plague outbreak. The plague wiped out parts of the city which have been built over now but can still be visited underground. If not Assassins Creed, then Id love to see a game based around that in some way.ShugGC: Edinburghs architecture was one of the major influences for Bloodborne and the story in the game does deal with a mass affliction. Or theres the flawed but extremely ambitious Pathologic 2, if you want to explore just the plague side of things.More to comeOdd to think Nintendo would do a Switch Direct this week, when the Switch 2 reveal next week would immediately overshadow everything but maybe itll be announced after I hit send on this. With regards to Switch 2 its strange to be in this position with a Nintendo machine, where we not only know quite a lot about it, but also everything we dont know is fairly easy to have an educated guess at.I read a recent round up (on IGN I think) of the latest predictions and it was still what everyone has been talking about over the last six to 12 months. PlayStation 4/Steam Deck power, DLSS, Mario Kart 9, mouse functions, 400-450 price, 8 inch LCD, June launch, etc., etc. Even third party launch titles like Resident Evil 4 remake, Final Fantasy 7, and Assassins Creed Mirage are entirely predictable.Nintendo need to bring the first party goods next week to make an impact, third party support isnt why people buy their machines. So while having those at launch is nice and all I can get them for under 20 quid on PlayStation. Nintendo need something that you can only do on the Switch 2 to sell a 400 upgrade to the masses. And this time its even tougher since tens of millions of people werent sitting on their Wii Us quite happy playing Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 in 2017.We may have all talked ourselves into a consensus, but there has to be something we havent seen yet whether thats through software like the new Mario Kart or 3D Mario using ray-tracing, online functionality or just generally the extra oomph in exciting new ways. Insomniac using SSD loading for the portals in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, for example. Imagine what Mario could do with that creative potential.Or a gimmick we havent seen in the hardware itself to differentiate it. Im not sure a niche use case like mouse functionality for a Super Mario Maker 3 would qualify, it needs to span all general uses of the system. What happened with that online system test from earlier in the year? Perhaps some kind of Miiverse return will be baked into the console OS from the start.Guess well find out soon enough.MarcGC: Weve seen 17 seconds of one game and the reveal of the console explained nothing. We think its safe to say theres more we dont know.Inbox also-ransAm I missing something but why is Silent Hill f set in Japan, if Silent Hill is a town in Maine? Is that what Kojimas Silent Hills name meant all along, and we didnt realise?CoolsbaneGC: Silent Hill: The Short Message was set in Germany. Changing the setting seems to be a new thing for these games. If Indiana Jones And The Great Circle is a hit on PS5 do you think well see a sequel? Do we know what MachineGames is working on next?JoshGC: Theyve been hinting at a Quake reboot for a few years now.More TrendingEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukThe small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend. • PS Plus games for April includes a surprisingly great 70s movie tie-in
    metro.co.uk
RoboCops best sequel for decades (Nacon)Sony has announced the PlayStation Plus line-up for April, and fans of classic films and/or Digimon will be extremely happy.Video games based on movies have a spotty track record at best, but in recent years thats become less and less true, especially for titles that go back to older cinematic classics.Recent titles like Indiana Jones And The Great Circle prove games are sometimes better suited than movies to continue older franchise, a rule which also applies to RoboCop: Rogue City. Developed by Teyon, the first person shooter features an original storyline, set after the events of 1990 film RoboCop 2.The game is far better than anyone expected and, ahead of its standalone expansion Unfinished Business later this year, it will be available to all PlayStation Plus subscribers from April 1, 2025.As confirmed by Sony, RoboCop: Rogue City will be free for PlayStation Plus subscribers across all tiers on PlayStation 5 next month.Another surprisingly good adaptation of an older film franchise is 2023s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, will be available across PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.Its a asymmetrical multiplayer survival horror in the vein of Dead By Daylight, only more polished and with a very goofy system where you level up grandpa with blood to help killers spot survivors. While it was somewhat overlooked when it originally came out, its a surprisingly faithful recreation of the classic 1974 horror film complete with several maps and characters pulled from the not-so iconic sequels.More TrendingThe final game on the PlayStation Plus line-up for April is Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hackers Memory, which is a sequel to 2015s Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth. It is a role-playing game in the Digimon universe, where you command up to three companions in battles. All of these games will be available to claim from April 1 to May 5, 2025. Its worth noting you can just add them to your library during this time and download them later, as long as you have a PlayStation Plus subscription. You still have until March 31, 2025 to pick up this months PlayStation Plus games, which includes Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Sonic Colours, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection. • Nintendo Direct confirmed for tomorrow ahead of Switch 2 showcase
    metro.co.uk
Two Directs in two weeks? (Nintendo)After much speculation, Nintendo has announced another Direct presentation entirely dedicated to the original Switch. While the rumours of two Nintendo Direct presentations within a week seemed hard to believe, Nintendo has confirmed it is doing exactly that.Ahead of its already confirmed Switch 2 showcase on April 2, the company will release another Direct on Thursday, March 27 at 2pm UK time. As noted in the announcement, this will focus entirely on upcoming games for the current Switch, with no updates on its successor. The Direct will be available to stream live across YouTube and will span around 30 minutes, which implies there will be some significant announcements. One of the big questions is whether Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will appear. The game is set to launch on the Switch this year but its unclear if it will also have a separate Switch 2 version.Recent rumours suggest it will not appear at next weeks showcase implying there is no Switch 2 edition so it may be one of the focuses for this Direct.Elsewhere on the Metroid front, remasters of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption have been rumoured for some time. The Switch remaster of the first game was shadow dropped in a Direct two years ago, so the same might happen for the sequels. What games with be in the Switch Thursday Nintendo Direct? As for other possible announcements, theres existing rumours of a Kirby: Planet Robobot port and one final big game from a niche beloved franchise. The latter description is broad, but it could relate to something like a new F-Zero, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, Golden Sun, or Punch Out!!Earlier this week, there was also some minor activity around Hollow Knight: Silksong, in the form of Steam backend updates. Given the games prominence its perhaps more likely it would be unveiled in a full Nintendo Direct, rather than just an Indie World showcase.More TrendingA remake of Fire Emblem 4, aka Fire Emblem: Genealogy Of The Holy War, has been rumoured for some time too. The last game in the series, Fire Emblem: Engage, was only released two years ago, but a remake could make sense as a stop-gap.As were approaching the end of the Switchs life, this might also be the perfect time for the long-rumoured remasters of The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Zelda: Twilight Princess especially as they were already remastered on the Wii U.As ever with Nintendo, its hard to predict what could show up, although it certainly suggests Nintendo has a lot in store for next weeks Switch 2 presentation as well. • One of gamings greatest epics is cheaper than a takeaway in PlayStation sale
    metro.co.uk
Open world greatness (Rockstar)A western classic has dropped to an incredibly low price on PS4 and PS5, along with titles like Hogwarts Legacy and Wolfenstein 2.As the world awaits the next update on GTA 6, theres never been a better time to jump into Rockstars previous world-conquering efforts. An enhanced PC version of its predecessor, GTA 5, was recently released (albeit with some drawbacks), but if you own a PlayStation console and have a strong affinity for the Wild West, you should check out a new sale on the PlayStation Store. As part of this spring sale, Rockstars acclaimed western Red Dead Redemption 2 is 75% off, at 13.74. That is cheaper than your average takeaway pizza or cinema ticket, and this historical epic by most accounts is at least over 50 hours in length. While Red Dead Redemption 2 is almost seven years old at this point, its still one of the most technically impressive games in existence and has one of the best open worlds ever. To date, it has sold over 70 million copies worldwide. If youre one of the select few who hasnt bought GTA 5 yet, that game is also down to 17.49 on PlayStation 5 and 14.99 on PlayStation 4.More TrendingThere are some other notable deals elsewhere in the sale. Hogwarts Legacy is 75% off at 16.24 on PlayStation 5, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is down to 9.99, or you can pick up the excellent Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus for less than 5.Weve highlighted these deals, along with some others, below.Red Dead Redemption 2 13.74 (75% off)Hogwarts Legacy 16.24 (75% off)Resident Evil 4 17.49 (50% off)Mortal Kombat 1 14.84 (67% off)Assassins Creed Odyssey 10.99 (80% off)Assassins Creed Mirage 17.99 (60% off)Devil May Cry 5 8.74 (75% off)Lego Star Wars: Skywalker Saga 9.99 (80% off)Dead Space 17.49 (75% off)Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus 4.94 (85% off)The spring sale runs until April 9, 2025, so you have just less than two weeks to capitalise on it before it ends (and is inevitably replaced by a different sale).Rockstars next game, GTA 6, is still on track to launch in autumn this year, although a specific release date has yet to be announced. • Assassins Creed Shadows humiliates Elon Musk after he calls game terrible
    metro.co.uk
Musk vs. Ubisoft (AFP/Ubisoft)An unexpected spat between Elon Musk and Ubisoft has erupted on social media, as the Assassins Creed X account goes rogue. While the reaction to Assassins Creed Shadows has been mostly positive following its launch last week, it clearly hasnt pleased everyone. The game has been a culture war target over its dual protagonists, black samurai Yasuke and female shinobi Naoe, ever since it was first revealed sparking online petitions and weird apologies from developer Ubisoft. These tensions have led to a bizarre exchange on X, involving none other than Elon Musk and a world class diss from Ubisofts social media team. This exchange was sparked by former Blizzard developer and Gamergate supporter Mark Kern, aka Grummz, who criticised Ubisoft for collaborating with Twitch streamer and left-wing political commentator Hasan Piker, to promote Assassins Creed Shadows.Kerns post on X prompted a response from Musk, who called Piker a fraud and a sell out. Objectively, he is promoting a terrible game just for the money, he added. While Piker didnt respond to the claims, the official X account for Assassins Creed waded in with some unexpected jabs. Musk has angered the assassins (X)Is that what the guy playing your Path Of Exile 2 account told you? the Twitter account said to Musk. This is in reference to the SpaceX CEO and senior adviser to Donald Trump misleading people about his gaming skills in Path Of Exile 2, after he admitted he had someone else level boost his account and that he wasnt, in fact, one of the best players in the world. The jabs didnt stop there. When Kern replied with a screenshot with the headline Assassins Creed Shadows isnt the hit Ubisoft desperately needs, the games official account account replied: Our game is out. The social media manager is relishing it (X)This appears to be a dig at Kerns spiritual successor to online shooter Firefall, called Em-8er, which still hasnt been released nine years after its initial crowdfunding campaign was announced.More TrendingWhile it remains to be seen if Assassins Creed Shadows will help Ubisoft out of its financial rut, the game has seemingly sold very well. According to Ubisoft, the Japanese-themed entry hit two million players after two days, surpassing the launch of Assassins Creed Origins and Odyssey.According to Gfk/Nielsen data (via The Game Business), Assassins Creed Shadows is the biggest physical launch of the year so far, although its physical sales in the UK are 63% of what Assassins Creed Valhalla managed in November 2020.Valhalla, however, was available on more platforms and came out during the pandemic. • Games Inbox: Is Assassins Creed Shadows the best ninja game?
    metro.co.uk
Assassins Creed Shadows shinobi does it better? (Ubisoft)The Wednesday letters page thinks a Metroid Prime 4 reveal this week makes total sense, as one reader predicts Mass Effect wont be part of any Nintendo Direct. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.ukStealth assassinsIve been playing a lot of Assassins Creed Shadows and I have to say Im really enjoying it. Its not really doing anything new for the series, but the graphics are very good and theres not many bogs, which is a nice change. But the thing I like best? Its the closest thing to a next gen Tenchu Ive ever played. Which by default makes it the best ninja game of the modern era.The problem is that there arent many other contenders. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is definitely a better game but its not that similar to Tenchu, which is fine because thats not what it was trying to do and Id much rather FromSoftware make something original. (The irony is From did actually make a Tenchu game, back in their pre-Dark Souls days, but it was just an Xbox Live Arcade spin-off.)Ubisoft isnt exactly on their artistic level though, so theyre the perfect ones to make a new game that is Tenchu in all but name and I kind of love them for it. Ive honestly had a lot more fun with it than Ghost Of Tsushima, which wasnt trying to be that stealthy but I found became repetitive much too quickly. Maybe Shadows will in the end but so far Im enjoying sneaking over rooftops and peering round corners, just like Tenchu on the PS1.FrankyCrazy DirectThe idea of another Nintendo Direct this week seems crazy at first, given everyones waiting for the one next week, but I think were forgetting just how weird and unpredictable Nintendo can be. Metroid Prime 4 and Mario Kart 9 makes sense to us as a launch line-up, but we dont know how far along those games are or what theyre like.It seemed madness to me that there wouldnt be a Switch 2 specific version of Metroid Prime 4 but what if, instead, Nintendo uses it to show how much Switch 2 improves the quality of Switch 1 games? That actually makes more business sense, because then youre telling everyone that even though the Switch 2 looks the same it actually makes the games youve got even better. Its the PS5 Pro pitch, except I imagine the differences will be more obvious and the console will be more affordable and do other things the original cant. So, if theres a Switch 1-only Direct this week and Metroid Prime 4 is the focus, I actually wouldnt be surprised.OnibeeWinners and losersIt will be kind of hilarious if this autumn theres nothing out except GTA 6 and Switch 2 exclusives. I can easily imagine it too, because we know thats whats people are interested and as publishers now seem to be accepting, people havent got time to play a dozen games a year. Its an extreme example, that probably wont be repeated again, but it does highlight the vast gap between the winners and losers in this business. Gamers arent willing to take a risk on anything that isnt either a big name or dirt cheap, preferably free.Thats always been true but never to this degree. Seems to me the answer is to make smaller and cheaper games but I dont see any sign that anyones trying to do that. Its the same old problem of everyone trying to be number one and nobody being willing to admit they wont be.ClanceyEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukVapour, where? So is there any theory for why Rockstar hasnt shown Trailer 2 of GTA 6 yet? I hate to ask a stupid question, but it seems really strange to have your first one in 2023 and then nothing, and were now a quarter of the way into 2025.A delay seems the only explanation, but Take-Two says its not that, so what is it? Are we only ever going to get two trailers? Are we going to get a bunch of them all in a row, just before release? Wont that seem a bit overkill?I just dont get it and if this was any other game wed be accusing it of being vapourware at this point. Its not like theres an obvious date theyre waiting for, so you cant assume itll be in June, or whenever. Theres just no clue at all and thats beginning to seem weird.FlossyNever betteredI didnt think there could be anything more crazy than the way that Sony has handled Bloodborne, but finding out its 10 years old manages to beat it. I guess time flies when youre having fun, but I wouldve never have put that down as a decade old. Its not even like it was a launch PlayStation 4 game or anything.I think thats because the boundaries between this gen and the last seem so vague. It still feels like this gen hasnt really started and yet were already talking about the next one. Its all so stressful because for me the PlayStation 4 was pretty much the prefect model console and yet the follow-up has been such a wet fart.I knew Bloodborne seemed like a high watermark at the time, I didnt realise that was going to be literally as good as it gets.Duke LazerTravel plansIve been wondering where Assassins Creed can go next too, and I agree theres nothing very obvious. The only one Ive seen a lot from fans is WW1 or 2, which could be interesting, but it depends where they set it.Something showing why theyre called world wars would be interesting, so a theatre we dont usually see maybe, like Africa or China. China is one of the obvious settings left but thats probably going to seem too similar to Shadows to do straight away, so the country in one of the world wars would be interesting.India would be another good one, but would Ubisoft really get into the politics of the Raj? And if they did, would they actually manage to be sensitive and accurate enough about it? I have my doubts. They could do it pre-colonialism though, that would be interesting.I know very little about that, but Id say one of the flaws of Assassins Creed is that it doesnt really teach you a lot about history that you didnt already know. They go for obvious settings but theyre obvious because people know them. Id like to learn about a new place and culture for once, that I didnt know about before.Given historical accuracy wasnt exactly Shadows strong point maybe thats a bad idea, but then again it could be a chance for them to prove theyre doing things right now.StationNothing insideSo Xbox have decided that you can go to the shop and buy Indiana Jones And The Great Circle but its a code that you download. What is the point of that? I was going to buy it but I dont think Ill bother now.Why dont they just do one or the other? You can either buy it on disc or you can download it, why do it where you can buy it in shops but you have to download it?DavidGC: Codes in a box have been a thing for years now, sadly. If thats even what this is it sounds more like there is a disc but it needs additional downloads to work.Direct EffectI wonder if well see anything about the new Mass Effect this year? Thats one thing I dont expect to see at the Nintendo Direct, but I would like it if it turned up at one of the not-E3 events. We really need to know that EA hasnt canned it, after the failure of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, but maybe thats me being paranoid. It makes me wonder in general what kind of games will be in the Direct and what wont. Im pretty sure therell be nothing from Rockstar, for example, but I wouldnt be surprised at Capcom stuff, up to and including Resident Evil.Ubisoft is a given, since theyve always been close with Nintendo, and I think bringing back those MySims games shows that EA are wanting in too. Although EA are getting like Activision nowadays, where they publish fewer and fewer games every year, to the point where Im not even sure what else theyd put on Switch 2. The current one already has EA Sports FC, so what else is there? A port of Dragon Age?Literally anything could happen next Wednesday and thats definitely exciting. I just hope Nintendo make the most of the opportunity and dont leave us with more questions than answers. People assume theyll talk about the release date and price but thats not guaranteed. We dont even know if therell be any third party games there, but I think there will be. Theyll want to show off that everyone wants to be on Switch 2 and hopefully thatll involve a lot of surprises just probably not Mass Effect.KrisInbox also-ransIm always shocked that Australia is the most strict country in the West when it comes to ratings and video game content. How can they be so chill about everything else but get worked up over video games?AlgieA lot of talk about Capcom bringing back old franchises but Im surprised theyve never tried to do a new Breath Of Fire. I know role-players arent generally their thing, but they made a lot of them back in the day, so they mustve have been popular at the time.PengleMore TrendingEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukThe small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend. • The Witcher 4 release date could be 2027 confirms CD Projekt Red
    metro.co.uk
The Witcher 4 release date could be 2027 confirms CD Projekt RedGameCentralPublished March 26, 2025 2:00am The Witcher 4 could be out in two years time (CD Projekt)CD Projekt has narrowed down the release date of The Witcher 4 and offered updates for the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel and The Witcher 1 remake.Cyberpunk 2077 might have had the bumpiest launch of any modern video game but it all turned out okay in the end and publisher CD Projekts sci-fi dystopia has now sold over 30 million copies. Thats nothing compared to 2015s The Witcher 3 though, which has racked up over 50 million sales making it one of the best-selling single-player games of all time.At one point, publisher CD Projekt implied there wouldnt be any direct sequel, but after the rocky road travelled by Cyberpunk 2077 they changed their mind and announced a host of new titles, including a remake of the first game and a new trilogy of original titles. The Witcher 4 is the first of these but the only thing weve seen so far is a pre-rendered trailer, which implies that Ciri, not Geralt, is the lead protagonist. Its not clear when CD Projekt are going to reveal any more information, but they have narrowed down the release date a bit.In the companys latest financial report, it completely ruled out the chance of The Witcher 4 in 2026. However, 2027 was described as a possibility, but with no promises that it wouldnt be pushed back beyond that.We are not going to announce the precise launch date for the game yet, said chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz. All we could share now to give more visibility to investors is that the game will not be launched within the time frame of the first target for the incentive program, which ends December 31, 2026.As you can tell by the way he phrased it, the information was aimed at investors, not fans, but its pretty unambiguous in terms of when you should start hoping for the game to be released. That wasnt the only revelation though, with CD Projekt announcing that it has also partnered with new Pokmon Go owner Scopely, for an unnamed title set within one of CD Projekts IPs. That probably means The Witcher or Cyberpunk, but CD Projekt does have at least one other new IP underway. There were also minor updates on some of CD Projekts other internal projects, with The Witcher multiplayer spin-off Project Sirius described as still being in pre-production. Nevertheless, developer The Molasses Flood has already been merged with the CD Projekt Red team, which suggests Sirus will share some of The Witcher 4s DNA (and assets).More TrendingStrangely, The Witcher 1 remake, which was implied to be the next game to be released, still isnt in full production, with some of the development team now helping out with The Witcher 4 instead.A remake shouldnt take as long as a brand new game but theres now a question mark over whether the game will in fact be the next title from CD Projekt, or if The Witcher 4 will leapfrog in front of it.CD Projekt has also hinted that it has a number of other unannounced projects in development, as well as brand new IP codenamed Project Hadar. What that is though, is a completely mystery. The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is currently codenamed Project Orion and will apparently be entering pre-production in the coming weeks. Theres no clue as to when it will be released but it will definitely be after The Witcher 4, so 2028 at the very earliest. • Metroid Prime 4 not at Switch 2 Direct but might be seen this week says source
    metro.co.uk
Fans are due an update on Samus next adventure (Nintendo)A week after it was claimed Metroid Prime 4 will definitely be at the Nintendo Switch 2 showcase, another rumour says the exact opposite. While there are plenty of theories on what could be shown during next weeks Nintendo Direct for the Nintendo Switch 2, its unlikely any concrete info will leak ahead of schedule. That hasnt stopped the rumour mill, though. Just last week, YouTuber Kiwi Talkz boldly claimed that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will have a big presence at the Switch 2 Direct, despite it so far only being confirmed for the original Switch console. This did always seem like a safe bet though, with last years trailer sparking theories of Metroid Prime 4 receiving a dedicated Switch 2 version. However, another insider is suggesting that wont be the case.In a new video by eXtas1s (who has typically shared mostly Xbox related rumours), he claims to have heard from his sources that Metroid Prime 4 will be absent from the Switch 2 Direct although hes unable to offer any explanation for why that might be.On the face of it, it seems very unlikely, but there are also current rumours of a separate showcase for the original Switch happening this week.If this is the case then its possible Metroid Prime 4 will be shown off there and not in the Switch 2 Direct next week. The game is supposed to be out this year, so if its not at next weeks event its overdue another showcase.More TrendingA new preview this week would also help to explain why theres a second Direct at all, since the other games that are expected for the original Switch are smaller titles, such as a long rumoured Kirby: Planet Robobot remaster. Maybe Nintendo will want to focus on wholly new games for its Switch 2 showcase? (YouTube)Which Nintendo first party games are confirmed for Switch?Metroid Prime 4 and Pokmon Legends Z-A are the only two first party games (that we currently know of) Nintendo has planned for the original Switch this year, but while its widely speculated theyll both receive separate Switch 2 versions, thats never been outright confirmed. In fact, Giant Bombs Jeff Grubb previously suggested no Pokmon games will be launching for Switch 2 this year, ruling out Legends Z-A as a cross gen title. The most recent trailer for Metroid Prime 4 looked so good some suspected it of being Switch 2 footage. But as much as Mario Kart 9 and Metroid Prime 4 seems a logical launch line-up for the new console, it may be that the latter is only playable on the Switch 2 via backwards compatibility, albeit with some graphical and/or performance boosts. Do you think Metroid Prime 4 will have its own Switch 2 version? • Three big name games will be delayed if GTA 6 comes out this autumn

Three big name games will be delayed if GTA 6 comes out this autumnMichael BeckwithPublished March 25, 2025 6:10pmUpdated March 25, 2025 6:11pm Launching a new game anywhere near GTA 6 is practically a death sentence (Rockstar Games)Several publishers have had to concoct alternative plans for releasing new games, depending on when exactly GTA 6 is released. The lack of a concrete release date for GTA 6 may be frustrating news for its fans (Take-Two has only ever said autumn 2025), but its even more problematic for other game publishers.Nobody is going to want to release their game anywhere close to GTA 6. Between the popularity of the series and the fact that there hasnt been a wholly new entry since 2013, anticipation is sky high and most people will have zero interest in playing anything else.It was previously reported that other publishers are refraining from committing to autumn release dates for this very reason and now we have confirmation straight from the horses mouths.Speaking with The Game Business, no less than three big name publishers have anonymously admitted they have plans to delay their games in the event GTA 6 meets its autumn release window.Rockstar games always suck a lot of money and, more importantly, time out of the market, said one. While another stresses how its already tough for new games to find an audience: Even without GTA, its immensely difficult to find free time for new games to shine. Time is the real scarcity for us, not money. An unidentified European publisher has gone as far to say that the worst scenario would be GTA 6 launching at the end of October: If it arrives in late October, that means you either have to launch early which a lot of people seem to be doing with the recent glut of summer release dates. Or go later, putting you up against the Black Friday sales.Even studios behind live service games are apparently planning to not release any updates during GTA 6s launch window. Its not just the smaller ones either; The Game Business heard this from developers for two of the top 10 live service games; a list that includes other cultural juggernauts such as Call Of Duty and Fortnite.GTA 6 is basically a huge meteor and we will just stay clear of the blast zone, said one, but the problem with moving its updates a few weeks earlier or later is that everyone else will have the same idea.So three to four weeks before or after GTA 6, youre going to get a load of games dropping content in what they believe will be the safe zone. All of this will be for naught if GTA 6 is delayed which hasnt been completely ruled out but the uncertainty is whats playing havoc with other publishers plans, with one studio boss calling the whole thing stressful.More TrendingYou cant blame these studios for being nervous, when GTA 5 became the fastest selling entertainment product ever and has made over $8.5 billion in its lifetime.Rockstar and Take-Two will want to see GTA 6 perform even better and we may already have an idea of how they plan to achieve that. Theres already rumours of a successor to GTA Online, which is expected to launch this year too.The game will also reportedly support paid user generated content, similar to how Roblox and Fortnite work. Aside from relying on content creators to provide new content and experiences for players, any user generated content sold would net Rockstar and Take-Two some extra cash as well. No matter when it launches, GTA 6 is going to dominate the conversation for a long time (Rockstar)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. • Silent Hill f has not been banned in Australia despite what website says
    metro.co.uk
Australia is very strict about the kind of games it allows (Konami)Although the Australian Classification Boards website said otherwise, Silent Hill f has not been hit with the ban hammer at least not yet. When Konami laid out all its new Silent Hill projects, it was naturally the remake of Silent Hill 2 that generated the most interest. However, of all the many new titles that have been announced its always Silent Hill f that has looked the most interesting.Written by Ryukishi07, creator of the When They Cry horror visual novel series, its first real trailer is very promising, confirming a new 1960s Japanese setting, a schoolgirl protagonist, and a lot of twisted imagery. With the games website promising drug-induced hallucinations, torture, and graphic violence, it wasnt too surprising to hear that Silent Hill f was already being banned in Australia except it hasnt been.Over the weekend, it was reported that the Australian Classification Board (ACB), which is responsible for providing age ratings for video games (as well as movies and TV shows) had refused classification for Silent Hill f, based on details on their own website. However, in a statement to Stevivor the ACB said this wasnt the case: Silent Hill f is not currently classified as Refused Classification in Australia. It has now removed the incorrect data from the ACB website, adding that a classification decision will be published to the National Classification Database ahead of the games release.Although no official explanation has been given for the error, it is speculated that it was due to a self-reporting tool. The tool requires developers to answer a questionnaire about their games content, so its possible the tool automatically decided Silent Hill f wasnt viable for a release in Australia. Will Silent Hill f be banned? It wouldnt be too shocking if Australia wound up banning Silent Hill f anyway, considering the country is far stricter with censorship than the UK or the US. For the longest time, video games that featured extreme violence, drug use, and nudity were typically banned in Australia, making it the strictest country in the Western world.Silent Hill fs ESRB rating makes it clear that the game will feature such content, listing specific moments that are particularly gory as well as mentioning a nude mannequin-like character, with exposed buttocks and partially exposed breasts. Silent Hills been violent before but the new one sounds like itll take things further (Konami)In 2013 though, Australia introduced the R18+ rating, allowing more mature games to be released in the country. That said, there are still plenty of games that remain banned even with the new age rating, particularly ones that depict or imply sexual violence towards minors.Silent Hill fs protagonist is a teenager, and the trailer and website show she will come to harm throughout the game (as evidenced by her torn school uniform). Not to mention the game will feature instances, or at leastreferences to, child abuse.Depending on how far the violence goes, the ACB could deem the game inappropriate even for an R18+ rating. That or force Konami and developer NeoBards Entertainment to make a censored version, which is what happened with 2008s Silent Hill: Homecoming. When is the Silent Hill f release date?As it stands, Silent Hill f doesnt have any sort of release window. Although given it has already been rated by the ESRB, it stands to reason that itll be out before the end of the year.More TrendingFinnish outlet Muropaketti did suggest the game would launch in July (as shared in the Silent Hill subreddit), but this is likely a mistake on its part since the article has since been updated to remove mention of any date.An autumn launch would make sense, to match the Halloween vibes, but Konami may be eager to avoid clashing with GTA 6, which is still scheduled for a vague autumn release window. In the meantime, Bloober Team, the developer behind the Silent Hill 2 remake, has its own original horror game scheduled for 2025. Titled Cronos: The New Dawn, it has more of a sci-fi aesthetic, as it sees you travel back in time to 1980s Poland after a cataclysmic event has turned people into monsters. After Silent Hill 2, Bloobers earned some cautious optimism for its next original game (Bloober Team)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. • Steel Hunters early access hands-on preview hero shooter in disguise
    metro.co.uk
Steel Hunters we love giant robots (Wargaming)GameCentral gets to play Steel Hunters, another new live service game focusing on giant robots, but this time from the publisher of World Of Tanks. If we had a pound for every time a free-to-play, multiplayer game with giant robots got announced wed have two pounds, which isnt a lot but its weird that it happened twice in such quick succession. However, since giant robots are one of our favourite things, outside of video games, were certainly not complaining, especially as both Mecha Break and Steel Hunters seem to be very good.We first saw Mecha Break at Gamescom last year and, as robot fans, its very obvious, in terms of both gameplay and visuals, that its made in Asia, with a Chinese developer and a lot of Japanese mech designers. Its beta has been a huge success so far and we enjoyed it a lot when we got an extended playtest with it last month. At the same time, its equally obvious that Steel Hunters is a Western made game, again in terms of both its gameplay and its robot designs. Its the new title from World Of Tanks maker Wargaming and the fact that it is so different to Mecha Break is definitely a positive. Especially as, while it borrows a lot from hero shooters like Overwatch, its also quite distinctive in that regard too.Steel Hunters is essentially a third person hero shooter. The robots youre controlling are inhabited by the digitised minds of former humans, in a post-apocalyptic world. So theyre sentient creatures, like Transformers, and not piloted machines, like Gundam. Were not sure we were particularly taken by the various wisecracks, and attempts to give them recognisable personalities, but there was nothing too obnoxious. There is a backstory to everything but as a multiplayer-only game it doesnt seem terribly important. What is, is the fact that the game currently only has one main mode, which is a blend of battle royale and extraction, although not really that similar to either. You play in duos, with a single computer or human controlled ally, against up to five other teams.Your goal is a little nebulous but youre all trying to collect an alien resource called Starfall, while also knocking out the other teams. As long as theres one person left in a duo they can bring the other back, but if theyre both downed within the same window then theyre out of the match. In the last few minutes of a round everyone left standing has to go to a single extraction point, to try and nab extra Starfall, as the map shrinks in the style of a battle royale. We say the goals are nebulous because we never spent much time trying to pick up Starfall and we dont think anyone else did either, because its much more fun to just fight with the other teams. Which wed say was a good sign.Theres lots of computer-controlled drones (literally, theyre very boringly designed machines hovering above the ground) wandering about the very large maps but while theyre not much fun to fight they are good target practice and drop useful loot. You want to get as much loot as quickly as possible, to try and level up and gain useful buffs before going after human players the defeat of which provides even more loot, as do crates dropped from space. One of the first questions we had about the game is why isnt it just called World Of Robots or World Of Mechs, or some such. We suspect the primary reason is that the audience for other World Of games skews considerably older than most other live service games, and so Wargaming are gunning for a younger audience with this, but creative director Sergey Titarenko offered some other reasons:The thing is, World Of comes with a legacy and expectations and its not necessarily the World Of game we wanted to make. We wanted the opposite, as although its very much rooted in the legacy of tanks and ships we wanted to drift away from being a vehicle shooter game.We decided that we dont want to build a game about mechs, per se. For various reasons, for visual identification the traditional mech genre is building a line of very lookalike characters, where it is hard to know what to expect from your enemy. So we went for very simple visual archetypes. Humanoid characters like Razorside barely look like robots (Wargaming)The question of whether to make the robots pilotable mechs or sentient creatures has been a core part of the design process and has clearly influenced a lot beyond just the visuals. We wanted an emotional connection, because we are trying to make a hero shooter we want players to care more about what they play, says Titarenko. So what you see on screen is what you play as, not someone sitting inside a mechanical creature. So early on we rebooted our visual and art direction, and we started to make something that looked more like Transformers. These are almost human beings. They are now steel and metal, but they have a soul and a personality, each of them and a bio and a back story.Visually we explored a lot, in our team we have lots of different personalities and preferences. There was a clash, a creative fight: should we lean towards more Asian and Japanese designs? But we thought we would be repeating existing designs so much that we wanted to create something that stands out more and appeals more to a Western audience. The obvious starter robot is Razorside, who is your typical all-rounder and the equivalent of someone like Soldier: 76 from Overwatch. He looks like Doomguy in giant robot form and his specials are very straightforward things like grenades, but that means you can instantly get into the action whether you have any special affinity for giant robots or not.One reason robot games arent more common is that a lot of the time they tend to be portrayed as slow and lumbering, despite that not being how they are in the majority of anime. That approach is more common in Western media but what impresses about Steel Hunters is that theyre all fast and manoeuvrable but still have an impressive sense of size and weight.Giant robot games, even something as renowned as Armored Core 6, are very bad at emphasising a sense of scale, but despite some mediocre robot designs Steel Hunters manages it very well. The three maps so far are all open ground, with a few villages and industrial areas, but you can smash through any building with minimal trouble. Although trying to use them for cover is probably the better idea. There are seven robots, referred to as Hunters, at launch, four humanoid ones and three based on animals. The human ones are where the similarities to Overwatch became a little too obvious, with a sniperbot called Heartbreaker, whos also female and just looks like Widowmaker wearing robotic armour.Prophet, who we didnt play as but whose main gimmick is a deployable drone, is even wearing a coat, for some reason. Trenchwalker, the healer, looks a bit more robotic, but only in comparison, in what are disappointingly bland designs that we hope can be improved upon with new skins. The animal robots are more interesting though and while the Zoids influence is subtle you can see it. After getting to grips with the games basics with Razorside we then tried out Ursus the bear-like Hunter, who has a rage mode that activates heat-seeking missiles. We thought they might be a bit slow and lumbering but at the moment all the Hunters move at the same speed (and have the same strength melee), although some have buffs that can modify that further. That seems a bit odd, and the developers indicated it could change in time, but as it is we found a team-up between Ursus up close and Heartbreaker at long range worked very well and after a few failed matches we started to consistently win, which was very gratifying. Most of our matches devolved into deathmatches, which we were perfectly fine with (Wargaming)We particularly liked the purposefully slow time to kill for all the Hunters, which also helps to emphasise the fact that theyre a honking great robot. You can take quite a bit of damage before keeling over and if youre sensible enough to retreat and bring back your shields you can end up lasting quite some time, even against experienced competition (although we assume the devs and testers we were playing against were pulling their punches most of the time). In terms of gameplay our only real complaint is that the melee action is very poor. You have to be standing right next to an enemy to make contact and the long slowdown between punches feels very artificial and frustrating. The developers already acknowledge this though and were sure changes will be made fairly quickly. Our other concern was that after a few hours wed already started to get the hang of things and began to worry exactly how much depth there is to the game. Each Hunter only has a few different abilities and the unlockable skill trees are all just stat changes, which isnt terribly exciting. Its not like Overwatch or other hero shooters have a lot more character mechanics, but they do tend to be more distinctive. Although we also played a bit with Weaver, who is a spider-like bot and has a deployable energy shield, which is very versatile from a tactical perspective. The best and simplest test for any kind of hands-on is whether youre upset when it ends and we were very loath to stop playing, especially before wed had a proper go with all the other Hunters (Fenris the wolf wouldve been our next one).Releasing any new live service game is definitely a risk at the moment, as Sony will certainly tell you, but publishing director Dan Tanasescu seems sensibly pragmatic about the situation. Our approach is to really listen to the players. We shouldnt think we know better than the players. No, the players know what they want. In the end we dont make this game for ourselves, we make it for the players, he says.2024 was crazy for the games industry. Over the entire library of Steam, 20% of it was launched in 2024. But only 14% of the Steam userbase played new games, the rest just played old games. [Actually, its even less than that GC]Players want something that is very well established and which gets frequent updates, so thats what we want to give them. By the time we are at version 1.0 we want players to think, This is the game I actually wanted to play, and I will stick to it. Obviously, we want to be successful but we also want to be realistic in terms of the level success. We suggest that, despite what some publishers seem to think, its fine to just be second, which Tanasescu readily agrees to. Exactly! Its completely fine if we dont have 70 million players daily, we know this.Steel Hunters wont have any monetisation when it enters early access on Wednesday, April 2 (yes, the same day as the Switch 2 reveal) so at launch it will be literally free-to-play, even if microtransactions will slowly be added over time. Weaver has a shield and a minigun you have to power up (Wargaming)Monetisation is definitely changing, says Tanasescu. Players are definitely very smart, they always have been. But also, were not aiming for a teenage audience, but a bit older. They will always think where they are spending their money. If they enjoy something then definitely they will spend their money, but if they dont like it they will not.More TrendingSteel Hunters is different, even compared to other hero shooters, and the developers seem to have much more realistic expectations for it than many other companies. Their focus on a constant stream of new content and listening to the needs of players also seems very sensible, but as they themselves admit their game, like any other multiplayer title, is still a risk. The initial reaction seems positive though and we certainly enjoyed our time with it, which hopefully means that therell be two super successful giant robot games by the end of the year. Then maybe that will encourage the mechanised video game renaissance weve always dreamed of.Formats: PC (previewed), Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5Price: Free-to-playPublisher: WargamingDeveloper: WargamingRelease Date: 2nd April 2025 (consoles in 2026)Age Rating: 12 Widowmakers robot sister (Wargaming)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. • GTA 6 map in GTA 5 taken down for potentially spoiling the game

GTA 6 map in GTA 5 taken down for potentially spoiling the gameMichael BeckwithPublished March 25, 2025 1:30pmUpdated March 25, 2025 1:30pm No one should be surprised by this (Rockstar Games)Following a copyright strike on their YouTube channel, a GTA modder has decided to take down their recreation of GTA 6s leaked map.You sometimes have to wonder why GTA modders even bother, given that series publisher Take-Two has a track record for forcibly removing mods, especially any that gain too high a profile.Despite drafting an agreement to allow for non-commercial single-player mods in 2017, Take-Two soon updated it to give itself leeway to basically do whatever it wants, resulting in a number of long-running mods, that had been following the rules, being taken down in 2021.As such, it should come as no surprise that a recent effort to recreate GTA 6s map in GTA 5 hasnt been approved by Take-Two, with the creator annoucing hes had to remove the mod.YouTuber Dark Space initially shared their recreation of the GTA 6 map in December, to demonstrate how much larger it will be compared to GTA 5.Last week, however, he made the map playable, allowing GTA 5 players to import it into the PC version of the game and drive around it. If youre wondering how Dark Space could recreate a map for an unreleased game, enough details had already leaked out about it as part of the infamous hacking incident. While Take-Two only had the YouTube video demonstrating the mod taken down, Dark Space has opted to remove all download links to the mod as well.In a follow-up video explaining all this, Dark Space argues that mods such as his are doing more to drum up hype for GTA 6 than Rockstar and Take-Two are. At the time of writing, there has only been one official trailer for the game and that was in December 2023.That said, Dark Space is more annoyed that Take-Two simply didnt ask him to remove the video, since he wouldve been happy to do so.Speaking with IGN, Dark Space says he fully expected Take-Two would come knocking once his mod became available, since the recreated map is probably a little too accurate.More TrendingI think my map could have ruined the surprise of their map, which I get. If you spent years building out this amazing game world just to have some YouTuber spoil the experience of the maps shape, size, and vibe Id want it removed too, he continues.Dark Space has also decided to no longer work on his GTA 6 mod since Theres no point putting more time into something that goes directly against what [Take-Two is] willing to allow. It seems likely that Take-Twos relationship with the modding community will remain fraught for the foreseeable future. It has been claimed that the company is looking to bring user generated content to GTA 6, la Roblox, which would encourage modding, but any such content would obviously be made on Rockstar and Take-Twos terms. Should Dark Space be flattered that his map mod was too good of a recreation? • Nintendo Game Vouchers wont work with the Switch 2 confirms new video
    metro.co.uk
A pair of vouchers can currently be redeemed for two games (Nintendo)Theres no point holding back from using Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers, as theyre not going to work for Switch 2 titles. As of today, Nintendo has officially killed its Gold Points reward scheme for Nintendo Switch; something it alerted fans to last month. You can still spend the ones you have on discounts, but you can no longer earn them through game purchases. While the company never gave a real explanation for its decision, its safe to assume that its part of its preparations for the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 later this year.Thats not been the only change though, as Nintendo has added some small print to the rules for its Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers, even going so far as to reupload a dedicated YouTube video about them.Fans noticed that the official Nintendo of America YouTube channel posted an overview trailer for the Switch Game Vouchers over the weekend. This seemed a bit random, considering the vouchers have been a thing for years and Nintendo already had an explainer video for them.On closer inspection, its obvious why Nintendos done this, since both the trailer and the video description include new fine print on how you wont be able to redeem the vouchers on Nintendo Switch 2 exclusives. How do Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers work?As a reminder, the vouchers exist to net you Switch games at a slight discount. For 84, you receive two vouchers, which can be redeemed for two games from a curated list, which includes the likes of The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom and, most recently, Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition.More TrendingNintendos given no explanation for making the vouchers ineligible for Switch 2 games, but its reasoning is crystal clear. With such excitement surrounding the new console, Nintendo isnt going to want people acquiring its first party games at a discount so soon.So far, no Switch 2 games from Nintendo have actually been announced, barring a new Mario Kart that was teased as part of the consoles reveal trailer. You wont have to wait much longer for such announcements though, since a Nintendo Direct all about the Switch 2 is happening next week.Unlike the Gold Points, Switch Game Vouchers arent going anywhere, and the list of eligible games stands to get longer. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokmon Legends Z-A are still due to come out for the original Switch this year (although the former is speculated to be a cross-gen release for Switch 2 as well).Plus, its recently been claimed a separate showcase for the original Switch is taking place this week, meaning Nintendo still has some more games planned for the system. Looks like Pokmon Legends: Z-A wont be the only reason to hold onto your current Switch console (The Pokmon Company)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. • Games Inbox: Bloodborne is 10 years old and theres still no remaster
    metro.co.uk
Our eyes are yet to open, to a remaster (Sony Interactive Entertainment)The Tuesday letters page doesnt think the God Of War series has many stories left to tell, as one reader wonders when Final Fantasy 17 will be announced. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.ukPraise the old bloodJust to highlight a non trivial birthday, but it was the 10th anniversary of Bloodborne on Monday. Thats right, its been 10 years since the best PlayStation exclusive, which Sony has completely ignored ever since and barely seems to want to acknowledge exists.I did hold out a smidgen of hope that they might say something today but its 6pm and theres been nothing. Tweets about Indiana Jones and God Of War and a bunch of others but not a word about FromSoftwares greatest achievement. What is it with this game, that Sony wants to pretend it never happened? I know no-one here has the answer but its just baffling and I wish it would stop because I want the PlayStation 5 patch, I want a remaster, and eventually I want a remake.Although to be honest it doesnt really need a remake. Its still amazing to playthrough today and I highly recommend it to everyone. Welcome home, good hunter.LimptonGC: Happy birthday Bloodborne, we miss you.Made for Switch 2Thinking about what third party games might be announced during the Switch 2 Direct I wondered whether it was too early to hear about Final Fantasy 17 yet. Im sure the launch is a long way off, but it strikes me as the sort of thing Nintendo would be keen to promote as coming back to their consoles.Theyll probably just stick with ports of the Final Fantasy 7 remakes, but I wonder if the next mainline sequel will also be on Switch 2. We know Square Enix want things to be multiformat from now on, so Im sure itll be on PC and Xbox Series X/S, but will it be able to run on the Switch 2?If the Switch 2 cant run it, because its not powerful enough, would Square Enix simplify the game for all formats, in order to fit it on? If the Switch 2 is a runaway hit, and they have enough advance warning of that, its got to be possibility and one that a lot of fans wont like.PascalHors doeuvre DirectI find it hard to believe that Nintendo is going to have another Direct this week, just a week before one of the biggest events in their history. Surely theyd be worried that less clued-up people would assume this weeks was the big one and leave very confused, assuming its only about minor Switch 1 games.I can easily believe theyre going to port some old 3DS Kirby game but I find it harder to imagine that theyve got some fan service sequel to a forgotten series on the boil, much as Id love that to be true. I heard one person suggest it could be that Fire Emblem remake theyve apparently had ready to go for ages. That is believable too, but Fire Emblem is hardly a forgotten franchise. Maybe some wires got crossed and they just meant lower profile than Mario and Zelda.I dont really mind, as long as the Switch 2 reveal doesnt disappoint. Im hoping for a lot from next week.OnibeeEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukKart it offSpeaking of games that do or dont get cloned a lot, I agree it is interesting the seemingly random way publishers choose what to copy and what not to. Theres never any Animal Crossing or Zelda clones, and barely any Mario ones nowadays, but for a while there you couldnt move for Mario Kart clones.I know in theory they must be easier to make but only in theory. Apart from Crash Bandicoot and, to a degree, Sonic, which were made by proper developers, I cant think of any Mario Kart clones that were successful, simply because they never play as well as the real thing.Id say Im curious to know who Warner Bros. wouldve put in their cancelled one but Im going to guess it was the cast of MultiVersus. So Batman vs. Bugs Bunny vs. Arya Stark. Yeah, I can live without that.TrepsilsPhysically absentExcited to play Indiana Jones And The Great Circle on PlayStation 5 and very glad to hear that therell be a physical edition until you read about the internet connection stuff and it basically sounds like an empty disc, which is becoming sadly common nowadays.I know digital won out over physical long ago but were fooling ourselves if we think were buying physical copies for anything other than the box. The game is not on the disc, either literally its empty or it just wont work without additional downloads. If you want to buy a physical edition because you like to see it sitting on your shelf thats fine, I get that, but I think we have to accept that copies today are not preserving anything.ChekovSkip, grind, and completeJust wrapped up my playthrough of Starfield on PC and Ill be honest, I actually enjoyed the main story far more than if I actually explored every barren planet. Thats the secret to an enjoyable playthrough. Focus on the positive aspects of the game, such as the main story and the few worthwhile side quests; never waste a second on the procedurally generated planets. Theyre the worst part of the game and we all know it.Another negative was the companions. Sarah Morgan was my favourite character and I used her from the beginning to the very end and Ill also mention the mods helped me out a lot. From skipping the temple puzzles to the cheat room. It allowed me to skip any grind and complete the story in 28 hours. Ill say that I also very much loved the time I spent on Neon. You travel with Walter Stroud from Constellation and that stands out to me as a highlight. The loading screens are insidiously excessive but it stood as a factor for me to skip dogfights in space. I detest that element of the game, so it was a welcome addition for myself. But the greatest quest in my opinion, and what was truly a marvel, was Entangled. Taking a few cues from Stranger Things, phasing seamlessly between parallel universes and having to navigate between, a lab, and a nightmarish infested underbelly was a welcome surprise.Even Morrowind or Oblivion have never utilised such a complex and interesting narrative, intertwined with a shifting landscape. A memorable romp and infinitely better use of time than exploring a wasteland teeming with a few creatures and an outpost opportunity.Ill say that I played this title the right way. I never joined the United Colonies, the Crimson Fleet or the Freestar Rangers, because it may have soured my experience and the story pulled me in that way. So, in conclusion, I enjoyed my time with Starfield and though theres an opportunity to experience a parallel universe after the credits Ive shifted my interest to what Bethesda will serve us with The Elder Scrolls 6. A new engine is sorely needed and some fresh ideas, the first one is the use of Unreal Engine 5. Innovate Bethesda.Shahzaib SadiqThe Outlaws strikes backNow that Assassins Creed Shadows has been confirmed a hit, and will hopefully stabilise Ubisoft for a while, I really hope that they will consider making a Star Wars Outlaws 2. I know the game really underperformed but I have no idea why. I got it (admittedly at quite a bargain) and Ive loved it. Its the best open world Ive played in a long time, and you can see it is making an effort to avoid a lot of the tropes and flaws of earlier Ubisoft games.I really like the way skills are learnt and the graphics are great, with a good variety of different locations and enemies. The problems are that the combat and story are just fine, but they dont really bring it down. Kay is a bit of a nothing character as well, which is maybe why a lot of people didnt connect with it, but I really think its a great game even with the flaws.Sir SteveGodless worldWell have to see, if and when its announced, but Im not sure what is to be gained from another God Of War prequel set in Greece, unless its to retcon everything, including Kratos personality. I would actually kind of expect that at this point, but it seems a bad idea to me.On the other hand, going to Egypt, or wherever, and beating up on another pantheon of gods might start seem a bit redundant, but I dont feel the series has ever really address the idea of people not needing gods anymore and Kratos helping getting rid of them. I feel thats the underlying theme of whats going on, but nobody ever comes out and says it.Thats probably because, as many people have pointed out, there are no ordinary people in the Norse games. Which is strange because there are plenty in the Greek ones. If theres ever been an explanation for this Ive never heard it, but I think we need at least one game where a reformed Kratos helps ordinary mortals and sets out what he thinks should be the order of things.Beyond that though Im not really sure the character has anywhere else to go. The series has just had two great games, the last one left plenty of plot threads for a new game, and yet the franchise feels like it really hasnt got much left to say, beyond what Ive just written.A prequel always seems like a sign of a series running out of steam and I have trouble imagining this will be any different, especially after Ascension turned out so meh. Maybe Ill be wrong, but Im glad to hear that Santa Monica Studio is working on a new IP at the moment, as I think thats the best decision for them right now.ClampsInbox also-ransJust putting this out there but if the surprise final Switch 1 game is F-Zero then I am pre-ordering a Switch 2 the second its available. Do you hear me Nintendo?!MoistAtomfall was sounding pretty good up until I saw the price. Theres no way Im paying full price for what looks and sounds like an Xbox 360. At 30 to 40 it wouldve been fine, but Im sure itll reach that price pretty quick.TacleMore TrendingEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukThe small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend. • The Sims clone inZOI is set to be the surprise hit of 2025
    metro.co.uk
inZOI is already a hit on Steam (Krafton)A new game has shot to the top of the most wanted list on Steam. and it means EA may finally have some serious competition for The Sims. When we spoke to the director of Split Fiction recently, we asked him why no one else was copying him, considering his last game, It Takes Two, sold over 23 million copies while having a much smaller budget than many games that have sold less.He didnt know, but then the games industry is very peculiar about what it will and wont copy. Cosy games like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley are still the preserve of Nintendo and indie developers, despite selling by the tens of millions, while The Sims has sold almost 200 million copies in the last 25 years and yet hardly anyone has ever tried to mimic it.That is set to change though, with Korean-made game inZOI due to enter early access on Friday, March 28. You might not have heard of it until recently, but the game already seems set to become a Monster Hunter Wilds sized hit.Although inZOI will also be released on consoles theres no indication of when that will be, and the early access is purely on PC.Thats not going to be a problem for publisher Krafton though because inZOI is currently the most wish-listed game on Steam, beating Hollow Knight: Silksong, Valves new multiplayer game Deadlock, Elden Ring Nightreign, and Mecha Break.Although its worth pointing out that of those five only inZOI and Nightreign have actual release dates. We dont mention Monster Hunter Wilds name randomly, as it achieved the same thing in the run up to its release and has gone on to become the biggest game of the year so far, breaking Steam records as it went.Whether thats also the fate that awaits inZOI remains to be seen, but at the moment there appears to be more interest in Asia than in the West. Steam doesnt reveal exact figures though, just an overall ranking, so its impossible to quantify the level of anticipation until it comes out.More TrendingInterest has likely been buoyed by the free Creative Studio app that was released over the weekend and allows you to create your own characters and buildings, ready to place them within the full game should you choose to buy it.Perhaps the biggest hurdle for the game though is that the amazing looking graphics require a pretty beefy PC to run, which the sort of casual gamer that likes The Sims doesnt tend to own.Thats precisely why The Sims goes for a more cartoonish style, so itll run on as many PCs as possible and also be relatively futureproof, because its not trying to be photorealistic. The other problem for inZOI is that most early reports suggest its not actually that good, at least in early access form. That doesnt always matter when it comes to a games success, although it might affect its long-term prospects if the only thing attracting people are the graphics. Graphics like this arent going to run on any old laptop (Krafton)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter.
