  • The billion-dollar AI company no one is talking about - and why you should care

Galeanu Mihai/Getty ImagesWhat if I told you that the biggest winner in this AI arms race isn't OpenAI, Meta, Google or even DeepSeek? This company is quietly winning, and nobody's talking about it. Also:From zero to millions? How regular people are cashing in on AIAnd when I say winning, I don't mean hype."One day, a magical company will change the world and revolutionize AI blah blah blah"Nah!!!This ain't hypothetical. They're getting paid. Today. Money in the bank. Not "potentially" winning. They are already winning. But they're chilling in the cut like peroxide. And I know what you're thinking. It ain't Nvidia, either. When I say zero hype, I MEAN ZERO. It's giving diamond in the rough vibes.Also:5 ways AI can help with your taxes - and 10 major mistakes to avoidThe wildest part is they have been around for 20+ years and only now started making real money. In this article, we're gonna break it all down:Who this unlikely AI winner isHow this happenedHow you can take advantageBuckle up. This is gonna be a good one. Like a Martin Scorsese movie, I PROMISE YOU you won't see this plot twist coming.Quick introTo understand how I discovered this juggernaut hiding in plain sight, first, you need to know who I am and what I do for a living. My name is Lester, but feel free to call me Les. I'm a founder with a successful exit under my belt. These days, I'm the exec chair for a group of ecom brands, but at my core, I'm an award-winning performance marketer. Also:AI isn't the next big thing - here's what isNeedless to say, data and insights are my jam. We operate more like a data company than an ecom brand. Our secret sauce? Pairing data and insights with ideas that generate revenue. If you're into data-driven business, marketing insights, and strategies, check out my free newsletter, No Fluff Just Facts. I break down what's working in business with no fluff, just marketing insights and trends that matter. But enough about me. Understanding the AI landscapeBefore I jump into the who, I need to bring you up to speed.I know I need to come out with it, but this context is critical for you to spot the next trend on your own.As you know, there is so much hype and speculation about AI that DeepSeek made an announcement and the market crashed by trillions of dollars. Yes, trillion with a T. There is no denying that AI is here and will play a role in our future, but how do you identify the real from the fake?Also:3 lucrative side hustles you can start right now with OpenAI's Sora video generatorHere's how I think about it.Who got rich during the gold rush? The guy selling the shovel.Who got rich during the dot-com bubble? The telecom companies.See the pattern? When investing, whether financially or allocating resources, I prefer to bet on the industry rather than a single company. This is especially true in the early stages when success depends on many factors aligning. So, with that mindset, I started thinking: If we're betting on AI as an industry, who wins? Where's the opportunity? To grasp why this sleeper company is winning, you must first understand how AI is shaping up behind the scenes. Also: The best AI for coding in 2025 (and what not to use)Right now, AI is in a hyper-growth phase. It's more like the early days of the dot-com boom: money flying everywhere, but very few companies are actually making money. At the core of AI, there are three key players:The Model Builders --OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic. These are the companies building massive AI models. They need a considerable amount of data and computing power, meaning they are currently spending way more than they're making. The Infrastructure Providers Nvidia, AWS, Microsoft Azure. These companies sell the computing power, cloud storage, and GPUs that AI models desperately need. They're making money, but they're not the whole story. The Data Owners This is where things get interesting. AI models need training data to get smarter. The problem? Most of the internet's data is free and unstructured.Using the gold rush as our blueprint, we see the real opportunities fall into two categories: Infrastructure and Data Owners.I immediately ruled out Nvidia. Why? Too obvious. Besides, I'm not looking for a stock pick; I'm looking for opportunities from which I can benefit. With that in mind, what I discovered was mind-blowing.This company: Doesn't have to build AI models even though they probably could. Doesn't have to sell GPUs. All they have to do is license the data they already have. So, who is this winner no one is talking about?Reddit. The big winnerYup. That Reddit. I told you this was a Martin Scorsese plot twist. If you're unfamiliar with Reddit, it is a social media platform and discussion site where users share content, discuss topics, and vote on posts. It's often called "The Front Page of the Internet."Founded in 2005 by Alexis Ohanian and Steve Huffman, it was initially meant to be a food-ordering app called My Mobile Menu.Good call pivoting to social media, lol. Also: 5 ways AI can help with your taxes - and 10 major mistakes to avoidHere is why they are winning AI models need human-generated content for training. Reddit just so happens to have one of the largest human conversation datasets in the world. What makes this so valuable is the quality of the conversations. The internet is full of junk, but Reddit's discussions are real, unfiltered, and human. Unlike algorithm-driven platforms, this is raw, natural interaction, which is precisely what AI needs to understand human behavior.Reddit is the shovel of this AI revolution. In May 2024, Reddit signed a deal with OpenAI to sell access to its data, which led to its first profitable quarter ever in Q3 2024, with 68% revenue growth to $348.4 million and a net income of $29.9 million. In the last six months, Reddit's stock is up 236% at the time of writing. Also: Reddit's latest AI update makes finding the answers you want much easierThe revenue growth comes from ads and data licensing, with AI companies paying top dollar for Reddit's content.Needless to say, I'm bullish on Reddit. The opportunity!Reddit has become crucial for AI development, and no one else comes close to having this level of rich, human-generated data. It's seen as the last town square for free human conversation. Here is your opportunity. While it's evident that Reddit is worth watching in the stock market (not financial advice), its newfound profitability means it will likely invest more in the platform to improve user experience, add new features, and scale its reach. But here is what I find really interesting. Also: Cerebras CEO on DeepSeek: Every time computing gets cheaper, the market gets biggerIn 2019, Reddit had 430 million monthly active users. By the end of 2024, that number hit 1.21 billion. This is significant because this is a mature platform, not a startup. This kind of growth at this stage is meaningful and something to pay attention to.I'm totally speculating here, but this growth ultimately comes from users craving real human connections. No bots. No algorithm force-feeding them content they don't want. It's authentic human interaction. This is where I see an opportunity to market your product or service.Wherever people gather, there's potential to connect with the right audience. Now that Reddit is profitable, it's likely to invest in the platform, potentially making it a bigger contender in the digital marketing space alongside Meta and Google. Also: The work tasks people use Claude AI for most, according to AnthropicThat said, Reddit's community isn't like any other. You neeeeeeeeedddddddddd to be authentic or you are going to get cooked.Focus on providing value, and don't try to be too salesy. Find ways to add to the conversation rather than take. Here is a link to some Reddit case studiesso you can get a feel of what works. My two centsI'll leave you with this.We should keep an eye on Reddit from a stock performance perspective and as a potential new traffic source to reduce dependence on Meta and Google. The real opportunity isn't just in AI or any one platform but in how we adapt as things shift. Platforms come and go, algorithms change, and tech keeps evolving, but the goal is always to reach the right people in a way that actually matters.By the way, if you want more data-driven business insights like this, sign up for my free newsletter, No Fluff Just Facts. • 5 ways AI can help you do your taxes - and 10 tax tasks you shouldn't trust it with
    www.zdnet.com
ZDNETIn a recent test of ChatGPT's Deep Research feature, the AI was asked to identify 20 jobs that OpenAI's new o3 model was likely to replace. As ZDNET's Sabrina Ortiz reported, "Right in time with tax return season, leading the table was the role of 'tax preparer' with a probability of 98% replacement, whichChatGPTdeemed as 'near-certain automation.'"There is no doubt that retail tax preparation services are using some level of AI to reduce their workload, but while tax preparers may well be replaced by a machine, I'm not convinced that will lead to accurate or reliable tax returns -- certainly not yet. Also: From zero to millions? How regular people are cashing in on AIFor example, there may come a time when you'll be able to tell an AI to find all your receipts and transactions, divide them into categories, identify which categories your deductions are in, and then enter them into the appropriate tax forms and bookkeeping systems. But that series of linked activities does not appear to be available now.For those who already keep their records in a clear and organized manner, AI might help. But in my first year as a business owner, I kept all -- all -- my paperwork in a big duffle bag. When tax time came, I just dumped the duffle bag on the desk of my local tax preparer. Turning that disaster into a good tax return was a massive by-hand effort. My business made very little that first year, but the fee I had to pay that preparer to excavate my documents and prepare my taxes was breathtaking. After learning my lesson, I got more rigorous about organizing my records. My point is that young entrepreneur me is not the only person with sloppy documentation. Some jobs will always require a human for at least some of the work. Also: The best AI for coding in 2025 (and what not to use)Even with good organization and rigorous bookkeeping (which I've done religiously for a few decades now), the various tools that we need to work together are usually from different vendors. The AIs are just not up to that level of organization across a wide range of documents and activities. That said, there are areas where an AI can help. Here are five of them. 1. Use AI features available in tax prep software Tax programs like TurboTax and H&R Block tax software now offer varying degrees of AI assistance for your tax preparation. Don't expect your tax preparation software to do all the work for you, but it can help save time and provide some quick assistance. Intuit has several AI-related offerings that are part of its TurboTax product. TurboTax can import data from 350 financial institutions and can auto-fill tax form fields using a tool called IntuitAssist. The AI is also used to check forms for accuracy and find errors, recommend deductions, and answer tax questions. Also: This is the best money management app I've testedIntuit is also pitching a TurboTax Live Assisted program where an AI will match you with a tax expert who will work with you in a Zoom-like call to fill out your taxes. This is sort of a mix of artificial and real intelligence.H&R Block Tax Assist is a new generative AI tool that can provide tax information, help with tax preparation, and answer free-form tax-related questions to help you understand the tax issues you're dealing with as you complete your returns. H&R Block also says its Tax Assistant can answer questions about recent changes to tax code, but be careful because AI knowledge tends to lag a bit behind real-time regulation changes. Now, all of this might sound good, but keep in mind that generative AI has the tendency to make mistakes, make stuff up, and mislead. That's not exactly what you want when preparing taxes. Geoffrey A. Fowler of the Washington Post provides a cautionary tale. He tried both TurboTax and H&R Block's AI features and found them to be "awful." Also: Stop paying full price for PCs and Macs: 7 ways to save moneyTo be fair, I've paid real-world human accountants for tax prep help, and have found some of them to be awful, too. Taxes aren't fun, and you have to double-check everything, whether it's your own work, the work of an AI, or the work of someone who claims to be an expert. 2. Use AI features in expense tracking software Not all expense tracking services offer AI features, but Fyle, SparkReceipt, and QuickBooks do. I am a somewhat involuntary QuickBooks user. The price has gone up considerably over the years, but the switching costs are even higher. So I stick with QuickBooks. For imported expenses that don't have custom rules, QuickBooks attempts to assign categories using some AI capabilities. Don't count on this feature. Those assignments are almost always incorrect. QuickBooks also constantly pushes its related services, some of which have AI capabilities. But I haven't found anything on offer that seems worth the upsell, so I haven't tapped into those additional AI capabilities. Fyle's big claim to fame is what it calls Conversational AI for Expense Tracking. Basically, all you do is snap a picture of your receipts with your phone and text it to Fyle. Fyle processes it in and categorizes it all automatically, saving a lot of time. SparkReceipt also automates receipt scanning and categorization, along with invoices and bank statements. It will then enter your information, without the need for manual entry. The key feature here is the categorization of expenses, which can often take both time and effort to do by hand. 3. Use Copilot with Excel Microsoft's Copilothas powerful integration with Excel. No matter what data you're organizing for your tax filing or accounting process, some of it is likely to be run through Excel. Copilot will automate many of the Excel setup tasks that used to take a lot of time and sometimes hard-to-find Excel knowledge. Also: The Microsoft 365 Copilot launch was a total disasterRather than go into more details here, I recommend you watch this video from Singapore, where the instructor provides a detailed look at how Excel works with taxes. While tax policy in each country is different, the tasks the instructor performs are very similar throughout the world. 4. Chat with a chatbot for tax advice and guidance You can also use a chatbot like ChatGPT or Perplexity to get tax guidance and advice. Just keep in mind you want to ask questions about topics that have been written about in prior years, are stable with unchanging tax rules, and for which there is published official guidance. Here are some examples I tried. They all resulted in good and accurate answers (at least as best as this non-accountant could tell). Who needs to file a US federal tax return? What are the IRS standard deduction amounts? What are the tax brackets for past years? What is the difference between a tax deduction and a tax credit? What are common itemized deductions? What tax credits are available for education expenses? How are Social Security benefits taxed? How can I check the status of my federal tax refund? What triggers an IRS audit? How long should I keep my tax records?Make sure you preface any questions you ask with your filing jurisdiction. If you're in the US, say so. If you're in Singapore, tell the AI that. Otherwise, the AI will probably not know which jurisdiction's tax rules are appropriate for you. 5. Upload and scan documents for analysis, summarization, and explanation You can feed your favorite chatbot PDFs for it to analyze and explain. For example, I uploaded a copy of the instructions for IRS Form 2553, which is the form used to elect S corporation status. I asked ChatGPT, "Explain this." I then asked it, "What are the most important things I should know?" It scanned the document and provided me with a list of important informational nuggets. What not to do I asked ChatGPT to provide me with a list of 10 areas where you should not use AI to help with taxes. It's a good list, and I fully agree with all of its points. Providing legally binding tax advice: AI does not replace professional tax advisors, CPAs, or attorneys.Ensuring complete tax compliance: AI may not account for the latest IRS rule changes, state-specific laws, or unique tax situations.Filing your tax return on your behalf: AI cannot submit tax forms directly to the IRS or state tax agencies.Determining eligibility for complex tax deductions and credits: Some deductions and credits (like the Qualified Business Income Deduction) require professional assessment.Guaranteeing IRS audit protection: AI cannot ensure you won't be audited or provide direct representation if you are audited.Handling late tax election relief requests: The IRS may require a written explanation of "reasonable cause," which is best handled by a tax professional.Interpreting ambiguous tax laws and regulations: AI cannot provide definitive answers on gray areas of tax law or IRS rulings.Preparing multi-state or international tax returns: AI may not accurately handle tax liabilities across multiple jurisdictions.Detecting tax fraud or avoiding penalties: AI cannot verify whether deductions, credits, or income reporting comply fully with IRS standards.Giving investment or retirement tax strategy recommendations: AI cannot advise on tax-efficient investment decisions, Roth IRA conversions, or estate planning strategies.I'll add one more: Do not ever trust the AI to be right. Always double-check everything. Use the AI as a helper, but do not rely on it as a source of truth. What do you think? Have you tried AI-powered tax tools like TurboTax Assist, H&R Block Tax Assist, or QuickBooks? Did they help or make things more complicated? Do you trust AI to handle tax prep, or do you still prefer human expertise? Where do you think AI tax tools need the most improvement? • This subscription-free smart ring with remarkable battery life isn't from Oura or Samsung
    www.zdnet.com
ZDNET's key takeaways The RingConn Gen 2 is a subscription-free smart ring that retails for $300 It monitors your sleep, activity, stress, and vitals, and it's got a marathon battery life The only downside is the user interface feels underdeveloped. View now at Amazon Most smart rings these days claim to offer marathon battery lives, but end up falling short of their promise. Take the Oura Ring 4, for example, which claims to have an eight-day battery life, but often only lasts me around four days tops. I still love and willingly recharge that ring, but part of the appeal of smart rings, compared to smartwatches, is their longer battery life.If you want a smart ring with a truly competitive battery life, I've got one for you. I've been testing the RingConn Gen 2 smart ring that boasts a marathon battery life of 10 to 12 days. The smart ring comes with other perks and a few drawbacks that I'll get to below. details View at Amazon Right off the bat, the RingConn 2 has some green flags. Unlike competing smart ring brands with products that start at $350 and go all the way up to $400 or $450, this smart ring costs $300 and does not require a subscription to gain full access to your health data. Sizing starts at size six and goes through size 14, and you can get the ring in three colors: silver, black, and gold. The build of the ring is more square than circular, but I found myself unbothered by this unique shape. It fits comfortably around my finger with no problems. Despite healthy and frequent wear, the ring doesn't tarnish easily either. The RingConn Gen 2 comes with a case that extends its already impressively long battery life, powering the smart ring's empty battery for over 150+ days. As someone who is constantly charging several wearable devices at a time, this long-lasting charging case that I could use without hooking the smart ring up to an outlet made me partial to RingConn. Most smart rings offer up daily scores for two to three important health metrics: sleep, activity, and readiness. Readiness is calculated based on yesterday's activity, how you slept, and other biometric data, like how late your heart rate dropped as you slept. The RingConn Gen 2 measures your vitals, sleep, activity, and stress, but doesn't measure readiness. Instead of readiness, it provides a Wellness Balance feature. It takes all of the aforementioned data and displays it in a flower-like graph, with longer petals for the biometrics that are meeting or excelling the recommended benchmarks and shorter petals for those that aren't. When all your petals are the same length it indicates that your wellness is at equilibrium. I liked that I could see all the important data displayed in such a digestible and visual manner, right as I opened the app. RingConn's Wellness Balance compiles your activity, sleep, vitals, and stress scores into a holistic illustration of your health. Screenshot by Nina Raemont/ZDNETHardcore trainers use the readiness or energy feature on their smart ring apps to gauge how intense their exercise regimen should be for the day. If that's you, you might be displeased with the Wellness Balance functionality, and I'd recommend the Oura Ring, Ultrahuman Ring, or Galaxy Ring instead. The app delivers your scores alongside context that helps inform the reasoning behind your sleep or vitals score. I was ill one day while testing the ring and spent the entire day sleeping. Because of the large amount of time I spent in bed, it told me that too much sleep can slow down my metabolism or lead to weight gain. Also:Your next Apple Watch or smart ring could have a feature that transforms healthcareRingConn says that the battery on its second-generation ring lasts up to 10 to 12 days, but in my testing, I found that it only lasted seven. Still, that's far longer than the battery lives of other smart rings I've tried, which last four to five days on a single charge. I can say without a doubt that this smart ring has the most impressive battery life out of every brand I've tried. The RingConn Gen 2 also boasts a sleep apnea detection feature with 90.7% accuracy, according to its website. If you're a chronic snorer looking to learn more about how your breathing impacts you throughout the night, the sleep apnea feature could help monitor your conditions and answer some of your questions. It tells you when there are significant or minor outliers in your sleep throughout the night, not only providing a graph that details this but also a timeline that shows when your SpO2 fluctuated during the night.I wore the Oura Ring 4 in tandem with the RingConn Gen 2, and found that the latter seems to underestimate both time spent asleep and the steps I've taken throughout the day.The RingConn and Oura both ranked my sleep efficiency in the 87th and 88th percentile. Oura said I got 11 hours and eight minutes of sleep, while RingConn said I spent 10 hours and 50 minutes asleep. RingConn reported 11,091 steps while Oura reported 15,259 steps. I've seen in various Reddit threads that the Oura Ring tends to overestimate step count, which could account for the great disparity in steps between rings. On a healthy night of sleep, Oura recorded eight hours and two minutes, a sleep efficiency of 94% and a sleep score of 90. RingConn recorded an 84 sleep score, seven hours and 45 minutes asleep, and a 91% sleep efficiency. In both cases, RingConn is subtracting around 15 minutes from my night's sleep.ZDNET's buying adviceI enjoyed most aspects of wearing this subscription-free smart ring, and with a price of $300 ($50 less than competitors), it's a smart ring I'd recommend to those looking for an alternative to Oura's subscription-based services. Especially if you want a smart ring with a battery life that will actually last you a week before recharging. The one area where I noticed RingConn's smart ring lacking was in its user interface. The app feels underdeveloped, and some of the messages lacked personal context that proved they were being generated off of my own data. On one good sleep score day, all that it said when I clicked into the sleep tab was: "Good sleep makes you happy." That's my only true gripe, and I hope the recommendations can become more tailored and informative in future software updates.Otherwise, the RingConn Gen 2 is an impressive smart ring with comprehensive health metric monitoring that's on the cheaper end of the smart ring spectrum. It accurately tracks sleep with features like sleep apnea monitoring that could help you uncover your snoring patterns, it's got a marathon battery life (plus a charging case with 150 days' worth of juice in it), and a build you can wear comfortably.Featured reviews

  • The best sleep headphones of 2025: Expert tested
    www.zdnet.com
If you've resolved to get better sleep in 2025, allow me to recommend one product that has changed my sleep game and could change yours: sleep earbuds.Sound outside my bedroom window is one factor I can't control. That's why sleep headphones and earbuds have been a saving grace for me. Although sound machines can effectively block out noises while you sleep, the best sleep earbuds offer a more compact, subtle, and personal approach that won't wake the partner sleeping across from you.ZDNET staffers conducted hands-on testing and extensive research to find sleep headphones equipped with flat speakers, active noise canceling (ANC) technology, and a long-lasting battery life that can be a game changer for a good night's rest, especially if noise is your number one nightmare. Some are earbuds that stick in your ear for the whole night, and others wrap around your head or eyes for a quicker and easier descent into slumber. Also: The best cheap headphones: Budget-friendly options in 2025What are the best sleep headphones right now?Our pick for the best sleep headphones overall are the Ozlo Sleepbuds for their comfortable fit for side sleepers and the effective white noise they produce that masks disruptions around you. But I've also included alternatives with different price ranges and form factors, from a headphone sleep mask to sleep earbuds. Show more How did we choose these headphones for sleeping? We selected these top sleeping headphones by doing extensive research into the product category, as well as performing some testing of our own while considering the following factors:Flat speakers:There's no point in sleeping in headphones if they're not comfortable -- and nothing is more uncomfortable than something poking in your ears. We looked for headphones with speakers that sit comfortably in your ears and against your pillow.Active Noise Canceling capabilities:We looked for headphones that cancel or block out noise so that you can have undisturbed rest.Battery life:All of our picks have battery life that will last you through the night from six to 28 hours.Price: The sleeping headphones on this list range in price from $12 to $300. While you don't need to spend hundreds on a pair of good-quality sleep headphones, more features come with a higher price tag. Show more Is it OK to sleep with headphones in? Yes, it is medically safe to fall asleep while wearing headphones. It isrecommended to keep the volume below 85 dB. Also, on-ear or over-ear headphones are preferred over earbuds when considering long-term use since wax buildup and ear canal damage can potentially happen over time with earbud use. So if you're concerned with that, consider a sleep headphone headband instead of one of the earbuds on the list. Show more What about playing music with headphones in? The same goes for playing music. You should try to keep your volume level between 60 and 85 decibels, audio experts confirm. 60 decibels is equivalent to the volume of a normal conversation you have with someone, while 85 decibels sounds like a trafficked city intersection or a loud restaurant. Show more FAQs on sleep headphones Are noise-canceling headphones good for sleeping? Noise-canceling headphones are great for sleeping since they have built-in technology that virtually blocks out any noise in your bedroom, making it easier to fall asleep in silence. However, noise-canceling headphones for sleeping are not the best option in the case of an emergency since you're essentially tuned out to the world -- especially if you already consider yourself a heavy sleeper. Show more Headphones vs earbuds vs Bluetooth sleep masks: Which one takes the crown? That depends on what you want to get out of your sleep companion. Headphones are best for back sleepers who want to listen to something to get them asleep, while earbuds and sleep masks may work better for side sleepers. Earbuds are the most comfortable, while headphones and Bluetooth sleep masks take some finagling and getting used to. Show more Best Headphones for Side Sleepers Our top pick, theOzlo Sleepbudsare going to be a side sleeper's best bet. As a side sleeper myself, I found these to work wonderfully on my side, as they prioritized comfort and dimmed down the noise outside my window. Show more Do sleep headphones block out snoring? Sleep headphones that include noise-canceling capabilities are your best bet for blocking out snoring. That's because headphones with noise-canceling technology use reverse sound waves to nix the external noises around you. A headphone with only sound-masking technology can only do so much to block out the sounds of a snoring partner right next to you. Plus, without a noise-canceling feature in your earbuds, you'll need to raise the volume high on your sleep headphones to mask snoring, but too high of a volume could deter you from falling asleep. Show more Why were Bose SleepBuds discontinued? Bose discontinued its popular SleepBuds because, despite the earbuds' cult following, the earbuds didn't garner mainstream adoption, a Bose spokesperson told the Verge. But the good news is that three former Bose employees revived the Sleepbuds through a new brand, Ozlo, and you can grab a pair right now throughOzlo's website. • Is a VPN-ready router the ultimate Wi-Fi upgrade? I tested one to find out
    www.zdnet.com
ZDNET's key takeaways The Privacy Hero 2, a $199 router available on FlashRouters, supports NordVPN and Surfshark alongside various VPN protocols. It comes with one year of access to Privacy Hero Wireguard VPN and, with a current promotion, one year of NordVPN. The company should improve the build quality and be more generous with the Ethernet cable's length. View now at Flashrouters Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are excellent tools for improving online privacy and security. Most people sign up with a VPN provider and then install their accompanying native applications on their PCs, tablets, and smartphones. However, there's another option: installing a VPN on your router. This method provides blanket coverage for any device connected to the router's Wi-Fi, allowing you to circumvent connection number restrictions and saving you the legwork of installing a VPN app on every device you want to protect. Also: How to use Tor to privately browse the web - it's easier than you thinkIt's not always a quick task, though. Many routers on the market support third-party VPNs, but you may need reasonable technical knowledge and be willing to tamper with internal settings to make everything work.Alternatively, some VPN providers offer VPN-ready hardware; one such model is the subject of this review. The Privacy Hero 2, a $180 router available on FlashRouters, supports NordVPN and Surfshark (both owned by Nord Security) alongside a range of VPN protocols. It comes with one year of access to Privacy Hero Wireguard VPN and, with a current promotion, one year of NordVPN.Let's dive into this VPN-ready router's build, installation, benefits, and disadvantages. How's the build quality?Once you unbox the Privacy Hero 2, you're met with a lightweight, compact router. It's lighter than most routers I've tried or reviewed (except for travel routers) and has a plastic feel. The build quality is acceptable for a $180 router, although I felt I had to handle it carefully. Charlie Osborne/ZDNETThe Privacy Hero 2 comes with an A/C power supply, Ethernet cable, and installation guide. The size of the four external antennae seemed odd, probably because they were somewhat bulky compared to the router's tiny body. Overall, the build is reasonable, and my only real complaint is the short length of the Ethernet cable.Installation processI've tested a variety of Wi-Fi routers -- traditional, mesh, and VPN-supporting -- over the years and found that installation complexity varies. The Privacy Hero 2 was very easy to set up. The router comes with a booklet and online installation guides, including a short video that helps users with the hardware side of the installation. After I plugged the router in, it took about 10 minutes to update.Once the router is ready, you must sign up for a free Privacy Hero account, which gives you web access to the router's dashboard. You will see this message once the installation is complete. Screenshot by Charlie Osborne/ZDNETThe next step is creating your Wi-Fi network. There are two options:You can set the network name to the same name and password as your existing network, so you won't have to reconnect your devices individually to the new one. This option requires you to turn off your ISP's router Wi-Fi signal.Alternatively, you can create a new network name. As I intend to retire my aging TP-Link model that has served as an IoT device hub until now, this was the option I chose -- with the name Privacy Hero. You can explore the Privacy Hero dashboard now that you're set up. I like the layout; it's clean, simple, and fuss-free. You can see the status of your new router on the Home screen as well as change its name or timezone. Screenshot by Charlie Osborne/ZDNET Under the Wi-Fi tab, you can check that your new networks are operating properly, or disable them if you wish. Screenshot by Charlie Osborne/ZDNETI'll focus on the VPN tab, as these are the main settings you'd most likely want to change. You will see various options: VPN, VPN Kill Switch, Malware & Phishing, and Ad Blocking. Also:You need a router-based VPN in 2025. Here's why and how to set one upIf you click the first tab, you can choose between different VPN services. In this review, we'll useNordVPN. Screenshot by Charlie Osborne/ZDNETThis part was the most awkward part of the installation process. The router comes with a free year of NordVPN service, so you must go to the account tab, find your voucher, validate it on NordVPN, create your account, and then generate an access token.Once you have the access token, you must submit it in the Privacy Hero dashboard. Due to timeout failures, my token was not accepted until after three attempts.NordVPN then launched on the router with a UK server as default. If you want to change your country, click on the connection and change the server yourself. Visit NordVPN's OpenVPN configuration file list and copy and paste the server name you want to connect to. Screenshot by Charlie Osborne/ZDNETEnsure you have also enabled the Kill Switch, Malware & Phishing, and Ad Blocking options. The kill switch will protect your privacy if your internet connection suddenly drops by stopping the router from leveraging your standard, unencrypted ISP connection. The other settings will reduce your exposure to tracking and cyber threats.Let's start streamingMy favorite feature is under the Streaming tab. Dubbed "Relocation," it enables you to select the country connection through which your VPN will attempt to route your traffic without constantly changing your setup. Also: NordVPN vs. Surfshark: Which VPN is right for you?If a streaming service is available in only one country -- for example, BBC iPlayer in the UK -- it won't be shown, as the organization will automatically direct your traffic via a UK relocation connection. If, however, a service is available in multiple countries, you have options. Netflix, for example, can be set to the UK, Canada, or the US.You will still need an active subscription; some streaming services require a subscription from your target country.Testing streaming servicesI spent over an hour testing various connections and configuring the router to my liking. That's not to say you need to spend the same amount of time doing so, as the router is about as "out of the box" as possible.NordVPN worked from the start, and I experienced no connection issues with my Samsung smartphone, Samsung TV, or Apple MacBook Pro. However, setting up streaming services was more challenging. Screenshot by Charlie Osborne/ZDNETI spent several hours testing which geo-blocked streaming libraries I could access through my new Wi-Fi connection. I tested the Privacy Hero 2 with Disney+, Netflix, and the anime streaming service Crunchyroll. Also: TunnelBear VPN review: An affordable, easy-to-use VPN with a few notable pitfallsMy first test was accessing my home UK libraries, which I could do without a problem. I then enabled Privacy Hero 2's relocation feature for the aforementioned streaming platforms while keeping the initial connection on a UK server, where I faced several challenges. At first, I had no success -- only my UK library was available. I powered down the TV, Sky satellite TV box, ISP-issued router, and Privacy Hero 2 and waited for everything to reboot.I then tried to access US streaming service libraries on Disney+, Netflix, and Crunchyroll. Despite the relocation options, this didn't work directly through the Samsung TV's Tizen hub when the UK was set as the central server. However, it worked for Netflix and Disney+ when I tested three US-based servers instead with relocation enabled.Accessing these libraries through a third-party app, in this case, Sky, worked best on my TV for Netflix and Disney+. When I chose this route, it didn't matter what country my initial connection was set to.Also: The best live TV streaming services of 2025: Expert testedWhen I tested Netflix and Disney+ on my laptop, I could access US libraries without issues. (I received a login email from Netflix confirming that an account was being used in the US; the relocation function was working correctly.) Unfortunately, Crunchyroll did not work on my smart TV, but I could access its US library on my laptop. Screenshot by Charlie Osborne/ZDNETI also attempted to access Canadian libraries and had similar levels of success. Accessing different geo-blocked libraries for testing purposes was more successful than I expected, although you may have to try different configurations.Lastly, I performed a speed test while connected to Privacy Hero 2 compared to my typical ISP router connection. I experienced a download speed loss of around 16% and an upload speed loss of 6.6%. For a VPN, I can't complain. About those ads...While a VPN's streaming capabilities are pretty popular, another feature many VPN providers offer is ad blocking.Ad blocking can be as much of a cat-and-mouse game as streaming services blocking VPN IP addresses. YouTube, for example, has declared war on third-party ad blockers and is attempting to stop viewers from being able to bypass or skip ad breaks.I didn't expect much, considering that most of the time, when I use a VPN and watch a YouTube video, there's very little difference in how many ads are displayed vs. when I use a standard Wi-Fi connection. However, I was pleasantly surprised at my final router and server setup results.I tested my setup using a cooking channel I'm subscribed to; while I love its content, the frequency of commercial interruptions makes it almost unwatchable. Also:Is your live TV streaming service still worth it? I reassessed the options for us bothOn a standard laptop connection, while connected to the default UK VPN server, the first ad on videos and a handful of ads were displayed, but fewer than usual. I compared watching the same YouTube video on my smart TV with Privacy Hero 2, with the same results. I then decided to try changing the router's initial server to a country where YouTube doesn't monetize ads. Lo and behold, all of the ad breaks within the video were disabled.I use an ancient MacBook Air to watch YouTube or to listen to audiobooks at night, and there's nothing worse than an ad break startling you awake. To ensure this wasn't a fluke, I changed this laptop's Wi-Fi connection to Privacy Hero 2, and the result was the same: no ads. There is a caveat: Speeds were impacted, so depending on what server you select and the speed of your initial broadband connection, you might be trading buffering for an ad-free experience.ZDNET's buying adviceRegarding the physical design of the Privacy Hero 2, the company should improve the build quality and be more generous with the Ethernet cable's length. However, installation is easy and user-friendly. This VPN router is the best I've tried to date, and it will be a long-term fixture in my household.I have previously installed VPNs on third-party, supporting routers, but the Privacy Hero 2 is far less complicated to set up and requires very little technical knowledge. The dashboard is easy to navigate and keeps technical jargon to a minimum. Also: Best TVs of CES 2025: Samsung, LG, and other new models that made our jaws dropIf you want to change the initial server connection, you'll need to work out the OpenVPN configuration file names. I would like to see NordVPN provide a streamlined list of servers that identifies which server belongs to which country. A dropdown list right in the dashboard would be useful. My favorite feature is the streaming location option. While many streaming channels are currently limited to the UK, US, and Canada (something I would like to see expanded where possible), toggling between them without finding servers yourself is highly convenient. If you want to try out the Privacy Hero 2, you can buy it from Flashrouters for $180. You'll receive a free one-year NordVPN subscription with your purchase.SpecificationsVPN protocols: WireguardWi-Fi standard: Wi-Fi 6 - Wireless AXWireless speed: 3000MbpsWi-Fi bands: Dual BandEthernet port: Type 4 GigabitAntenna type: 4 ExternalProcessor: MediaTekProcessor speed: 1.3GHzRAM: 512 MB / 128 MBPower supply: 100-240VAlong with Wireguard, this router also supportsNordLynx, which combines Wireguard with NordVPN security features. Why use a VPN to stream? VPNs can be used to watch your favorite content on platforms, including Amazon Prime, Disney+, Hulu, and Netflix.Setting a VPN to your home region while you're traveling, for example, may allow you to access your favorite shows in your standard library. However, some users also use VPNs to try and access films and TV shows only available in other countries. You do this by setting your VPN to a server in the target country.I tried to access streaming libraries locked to the US and Canada via Privacy Hero 2 routing below for testing purposes only. You should keep in mind that accessing libraries outside of your home region is a legally gray area and may break your streaming service provider's terms and conditions. Furthermore, stopping these activities is a constant cat-and-mouse game between VPN providers and content platforms, and so a method that worked last week may not work tomorrow.
