A team from the University of Mississippi has publicized research into the use of artificial intelligence to design and maintain infrastructure. Led by Ali Behnood, assistant professor of civil engineering, the research stems from the universitys NextGen Infrastructure Lab which explores how recycled materials, renewable resources, and alternative construction materials can create a new generation of sustainable, resilient infrastructure. In a recent study, Behnood and doctoral student Abolfazl Afshin tested AI algorithms to predict moisture damage in asphalt pavements containing reclaimed asphalt pavement materials. While moisture can weaken asphalt, leading to potholes and cracking, particularly in wet and cold regions, the researchers found that AI algorithms could accurately predict moisture damage, enabling better material selection and maintenance planning. With U.S. state and local governments spending over $206 billion on road maintenance in 2021 and nearly $1 trillion in r...
